So, do you ever find yourself scared to do your duty as a dad?\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear more from Dennis today. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. I have to believe some of our listeners are saying: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound like Dennis Rainey!\u00a0 Are you sure that was Dennis Rainey?\u201d\u2014what we just played. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In another life. [Laughter] This was in 1994\u2014we had six kids, ages 10 to 20. That was in Pittsburgh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong><em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> had been on the air for two years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You and Barbara were right in the thick of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We were in the thick of it. I think\u2014well, let\u2019s see. We would have had four teenagers\u2014three or four teenagers\u2014at that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; and you and Barbara had gone to Pittsburgh to speak at one of our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaways. One of the things that we always talk about at the getaway is the importance of a dad being a dad and a mom being a mom, and we kind of spell out what the job description is for moms and dads. And you were speaking in Pittsburgh about your job as a dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s one of the messages the speakers fight over; because who doesn\u2019t totally enjoy just talking about the <em>weighty<\/em> responsibility of shaping the character, the conscience, and the spiritual life of the next generation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, here is a little vintage audio from <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, going back to 1994\u2014Dennis Rainey\u2014as he said, in another life\u2014[Laughter]\u2014talking about being a dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cDad\u201d\u2014just the very word evokes an emotional twinge in our hearts. You and I, as men, have been given the responsibility\u2014not only of leading, loving, and caring for our wives\u2014but also the sacred privilege of being a dad. Gentlemen, there are little eyes watching us like little radar units focusing in on us, wanting so much and so desperately to be loved by a man called Dad and to have that approval that they so desperately need. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLetter \u201cA\u201d in your outline says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDad is the leader of his family. He is a manager,\u201d\u2014a manager. You are the manager of your home. I love what Benjamin Hooks writes here\u2014he says, with tongue in cheek: \u201cHe who thinketh he leadeth, and turn around to find no one following, is merely taking a walk.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Dad is a manager; and as a manager, he leads his family in a <em>direction<\/em>: \u201cWhere are you headed, gentlemen, with your family?\u00a0 Where are you taking them?\u00a0 Where are the horizons?\u00a0 Where are the vistas you\u2019re going for?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMay I let you in on a little conviction of mine?\u00a0 I believe one of the reasons why the Christian family has lost its saltiness and flavor is because we, as men, have no vision for the future. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur vision is all encircled in material things. We are not taking a tribe of people\u2014or a woman and children\u2014in a direction of value, and character, and posterity for the future. Gentlemen, if we don\u2019t\u2014if we don\u2019t go forward and take our families in that direction, then who will?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you and I abdicate\u2014and give up, and step back, and become passive, and let someone else take over and become the manager\u2014then, someone\u2019s got to lead. Do you know who it usually is?\u2014our wives. There are far too many homes today where men are there in title only, but they have given up. They have become passive\u2014another word for passive is <em>lazy<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, I work hard, too; but you know what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInstead of plugging in the tube\u2014and unplugging from reality and just becoming that amoeba that wants to relax\u2014I fight it!\u00a0 Somedays, I don\u2019t win; but I\u2019m winning more than I\u2019m losing at home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: Dad\u2019s heart helps him shepherd his family. He is a minister.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a good friend who is the president of a corporation. He said: \u201cYou know, Dennis, I\u2019ve been able to lead our employees\u2014some 700 of them\u2014to several million in profits \/ nearly 100 million sales\u2014but I can tell you the truth, Dennis,\u201d\u2014he said\u2014\u201cWhen I sit down at the breakfast table or the dinner table with those little kids, those kids looking me in the eye\u2014those beady little eyes\u201d\u2014he said\u2014\u201cI\u2019m scared to <em>death<\/em> to say anything to lead them spiritually. I don\u2019t know what to <em>do<\/em>!\u00a0 How do I lead them?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at Malachi 4:6. This is a great one\u2014I\u2019m claiming this for our generation: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAnd He will restore the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse.\u201d\u00a0 We need a fresh revival of men, who unashamedly love their children \/ who\u2019ve got a relationship with them and who will deny gain and success to make their families work. What are you building, gentlemen?\u00a0 Are you building relationships or kingdoms?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a question in my notes. I want you to write it down: \u201cWhat do you remember most about your father?\u201d\u00a0 As you think about that, let me tell you about my dad. I can recall him slamming the door when he came through the doorway at 5:30 or 6 o\u2019clock in the evening\u2014it rattled the entire house. He wore Old Spice aftershave, and he always smelled like propane or gasoline, which he pumped for nearly 45 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I can recall, as a young lad, crawling up in his lap and going to sleep against his chest and his hairy arms, smelling his perspiration of a hard day\u2019s work. And I can recall, as I grew up, how I would walk in\u2014I would take his newspaper, and I\u2019d pull it down, and say, \u201cHey, Dad, let\u2019s play catch.\u201d\u00a0 More than often, he would lift his tired body out of that seat of that easy chair that wore his imprint. He would put on his mitt and go out front in some grass that was browned by August and play catch with a young boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey used to call him Hook Rainey. They called him Hook Rainey because he was a lefty; he had a curve ball that would go in there and just fall off the table, they said, right before it came to the plate\u2014Hook Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember going, at Christmastime with Hook Rainey, to deliver Christmas presents to people who were poor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember a funeral that brought out a third of the town\u2014500 people. You see, he didn\u2019t live in a big city, where you could mask it and hide it. He did business, day in and day out, where he grew up. One man said upon his death\u2014he said, \u201cI never heard a negative word about Hook Rainey.\u201d\u00a0 His integrity was beyond imagination\u2014the highest. He would let people cheat him before he would take advantage of them. Today, although he is dead, he lives. [Emotion in voice] He lives in the memory of a man who watched him\u2014who, today, draws on his integrity and the model in my own life.\u00a0 I miss him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a question I want you to write down in your notes, gentlemen:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do you want to be remembered?\u201d When your boys come to a FamilyLife conference 25\/30 years from now\u2014with a young lady they\u2019re getting ready to marry, and they sit in this room\u2014what are they going to say about you?\u00a0 Gentlemen, every one of us in this room is going to leave a legacy of some sort. Whether you have children or not, we are influencing people by the virtue of where we are in our culture and in our society. What will be the legacy that you leave?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018C\u2019: \u201cDad\u2019s character provides the basis for how he leads. He is a model.\u201d\u00a0 Look at Exodus 18. The context for this passage right here is\u2014Jethro, Moses\u2019 father-in-law, comes up to him one day and says, \u201cMoses, you\u2019re going to wear out the people and yourself too.\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cMoses, you\u2019ve, basically, got to delegate and find some leaders.\u201d\u00a0 Jethro gives Moses some key advice on the qualifications for whom to entrust with responsibility and to give that responsibility to them: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cFurthermore, you shall select, Moses, out of all the people, able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain. And you shall place them over them as leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.\u201d\u00a0 You know what is central to this right here? Write one word underneath here\u2014\u201ccharacter.\u201d\u00a0 And we\u2019ll find out in just a moment that leadership demands character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad is, first of all, the family manager\u2014\u201c\u2019A\u2019: He must manage his household and keep his children under control.\u201d\u00a0 First Timothy 3:4 says, \u201cHe must be one who manages his own household well keeping his children under control with all dignity.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCould I ask you a question?\u00a0 \u201cWhat would happen if you switched the energy you give your business with the energy you give your home?\u2014and you gave the energy that you now give at home to your business \/ and the energy you now give at your business to home? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat would happen to your business \/ what would happen to work?\u2014what would happen to home?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know that\u2019s an unfair question; because we work many, many hours away from the family unit. But many of us are so caught off guard by this that we give almost <em>all<\/em> our energy. The problem is\u2014not that we would want to switch it 100 percent\u2014but there would be some kind of balance in our life here, gentlemen. We\u2019ve got to have it\u2014the next generation demands it. Management demands that we be close to the people we manage\u2014and that means time \/ that means being close to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a principle of archery here. If the target was set up over here, by that wall over there, and I pulled back\u2014if you guys know anything about my abilities in archery, you\u2019d clear out\u2014but if we moved the target on this stage, then, maybe a few of you guys here ought to move. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy?\u2014because error increases with distance. And you and I, as the managers and leaders of our home, must reduce the distance between us and the people that we lead. You can\u2019t lead from afar\u2014you\u2019ve got to be there!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: \u201cDad manages by being prayerfully dependent upon God.\u201d\u00a0 Prayerfully dependent upon God\u2014asking God to help him lead: \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m doing. If You don\u2019t lead me up from here, I\u2019m not going. And I can\u2019t lead if You don\u2019t help me lead and give me wisdom of what to do. Help me head off things at the pass before we get into a crisis.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Gentlemen, most men today lead like a goal-line stand on defense. Their backs are to their own goal line there; and they are protecting it\u2014trying to keep the enemy from running over from a yard out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut guys, that\u2019s not the way we need to be leading. We need to have an offensive plan that\u2019s marching at mid-field\u2014that\u2019s going for a touchdown. Too much of parenting today is defensive, and it needs to be <em>offensive<\/em> parenting. As the managers and leaders of our home, that responsibility begins with <em>me<\/em> as the head of my home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at this verse, Proverbs 24:[3,4]: \u201cBy wisdom, a house is built. By understanding, it is established. And by knowledge, its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.\u201d\u00a0 Underline these words, would you?\u2014wisdom, understanding, knowledge. Let\u2019s look at those in reverse order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, \u201cHe manages with knowledge.\u201d\u00a0 I like a statement that Jim Dobson\u2019s father wrote to him in the \u201870s. I\u2019m going to read this to you because Dr. Dobson, who has had a powerful impact on the family, was influenced by his father also. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis dad wrote him this letter about his own misplaced priorities\u2014he says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour daughter is growing up, Jim, in the wickedest section of a world, much farther gone into moral decline than the world into which you were born. I have observed that the greatest delusion is to suppose that our children will be devout Christians simply because their parents have been or that any of them will enter into the Christian faith through any other means other than through their parents\u2019 deep travail of prayer and faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut listen to what he says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut this prayer demands time\u2014time that cannot be given if it is all signed, and conscripted, and laid on the altar of career ambition. Failure for you, at this point, would make you a mere success in your occupation\u2014a very pale and washed out affair indeed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe read that on the way to a speaking engagement in Hawaii; and, not long after, decided to film his film series that\u2019s now been seen by millions. \u201cHe manages with knowledge.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know what\u2019s going on around your kids?\u2014what the trouble they are facing?\u00a0 Look at Proverbs 27[:23], here: \u201cKnow well the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds.\u201d\u00a0 A good shepherd\u2019s got to be close to the sheep and care for them carefully and watch over them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 2\u201d\u2014look at this: \u201cHe manages with understanding.\u201d\u00a0 He knows what\u2019s going on, and he knows what they have to handle. Do you know what one of the key things your children and mine have to learn how to deal with?\u2014is failure\u2014not just succeeding, but learning how to deal with their own failures. I love a statement that Lincoln made to the nation torn in the middle of the Civil War. He said\u2014and I quote: \u201cI am not concerned that you have fallen. I am concerned that you arise.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, as fathers, we can get so focused on where our kids blow it that we miss the point of teaching them, through their failures, and teaching that little boy to become a man\u2014to be faithful \/ to be responsible\u2014or that little girl, through her mistakes, how to become a young woman and a lady. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 3: He manages with wisdom.\u201d\u00a0 I want you to write a definition of wisdom out here: \u201cWisdom is skill in everyday living.\u201d\u00a0 It takes the raw pieces and components of life and fits them together to make something meaningful, skillfully. Are you a man of wisdom?\u2014taking the components of life and training your children \/ equipping your wife to make meaning out of this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChuck Swindoll writes a little statement that is called \u201cMy Dad.\u201d I want to read it to you, because it talked about how his dad used all three of these as he raised him: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad died last night. He left like he lived\u2014quietly, graciously, with dignity. Without demands, or harsh words, or even a frown, he surrendered himself, a tired, frail, humble gentleman into the waiting arms of his Savior. Death, selfish and cursed enemy of man, had won another battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I stroked the hair from his forehead and kissed him goodbye, a hundred boyhood memories played around in my head: When I learned to ride a bike, he was there. When I wrestled with the multiplication table, his quick wit erased the hassle. When I discovered the adventure of driving a car, he was near, encouraging me. When I mentioned a young woman I had fallen in love with, he pulled me aside and talked to me straight about being responsible for her welfare and her happiness. And when I did a hitch in the Marine Corps, the discipline I had learned from him made the transition easier. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrom him\u2014[Chuck writes]\u2014I learned how to open oyster shells, and fix crab gumbo, and chili, and popcorn, and make rafts out of old inner tubes and gunny sacks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was continually amazed at his ability to make things out of old pieces, and tie fragile mantles on old Coleman<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> lanterns, keep a fire going in the rain, play a harmonica with his hands behind his back, and keep three strong-willed kids from tearing the house down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLast night, I realized I had him to thank for my deep love for America, and for knowing how to tenderly care for my wife, and for laughing at impossibilities, and for some of the habits I\u2019ve picked up\u2014like approaching people with a positive spirit rather than a negative one\u2014staying with a task until it\u2019s finished, taking good care of my personal belongings, keeping my shoes shined, speaking up rather than mumbling, respecting authority, standing alone if necessary in support of my personal convictions rather than giving in to more popular opinions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor these things, I am deeply indebted to the man who raised me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCertain smells and sounds\u2014[he writes]\u2014now remind me of my dad: oyster stew, the ocean breeze, smoke from an expensive cigar, the nostalgic whine of a harmonica, a camping lantern and white gas, car polish, fun songs from the \u201830s and \u201840s, freshly- mowed grass, and a shrill whistle from his father to his kids around suppertime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[He finishes\u2014he says:] Last night, I said, \u201cGoodbye.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m still trying to believe it; but my father leaves in his legacy a well-marked Bible I treasure, a series of feelings that I need to deepen my roots, and a thousand memories that comfort me as I replace denial with acceptance and praise. He died last night, or did he?\u00a0 The memories are as fresh as this morning\u2019s sunrise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWow!\u00a0 Men, we\u2019re going to leave an imprint for future generations. You and I, as fathers, have one of the greatest privileges\u2014to imprint young lives, who will carry on into future generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part of a message given to fathers, back in 1994\u2014Dennis Rainey speaking at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. That may be a few decades old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I was thinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s still timely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is still timeless. Dads have got to step up, assume the responsibility, and realize that they\u2019re\u2014they are shaping the next generation. They need to assume their responsibility and do it well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You spent a lot of time in the book that you wrote, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014you talked about being a dad, a lot, in that book. It was a call to men to step up and embrace our responsibilities, as men; but being a dad is a big part of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is; and for a father to reach down to a boy\u2014who\u2019s on that boyhood step, or the adolescent step, or even the early manhood step\u2014and to coach him about what it means to grow into manhood and assume the responsibilities that men must embrace. Then, set their focus on the steps ahead of being a mentor and a patriarch. By the way, the word, \u201cpatriarch,\u201d is <em>not<\/em> a dirty word. It is a <em>noble<\/em> calling when you do it God\u2019s way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s something that you spend some time on in your book, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. You talk about the steps of a man\u2019s lifetime\u2014the journey that we\u2019re all on\u2014from boyhood, to adolescence, to manhood, to mentor, and then, to patriarch. It really is a noble thing to aspire to. I think\u2014well, let\u2019s see. We would have had four teenagers\u2014three or four teenagers\u2014at that time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; and you and Barbara had gone to Pittsburgh to speak at one of our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaways. One of the things that we always talk about at the getaway is the importance of a dad being a dad and a mom being a mom, and we kind of spell out what the job description is for moms and dads. And you were speaking in Pittsburgh about your job as a dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And it\u2019s one of the messages the speakers fight over; because who doesn\u2019t totally enjoy just talking about the <em>weighty<\/em> responsibility of shaping the character, the conscience, and the spiritual life of the next generation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, here is a little vintage audio from <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, going back to 1994\u2014Dennis Rainey\u2014as he said, in another life\u2014[Laughter]\u2014talking about being a dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cDad\u201d\u2014just the very word evokes an emotional twinge in our hearts. Gentlemen, there are little eyes watching us like little radar units focusing in on us, wanting so much and so desperately to be loved by a man called Dad and to have that approval that they so desperately need. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLetter \u201cA\u201d in your outline says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDad is the leader of his family. He is a manager,\u201d\u2014a manager. You are the manager of your home. Gentlemen, if we don\u2019t\u2014if we don\u2019t go forward and take our families in that direction, then who will?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you and I abdicate\u2014and give up, and step back, and become passive, and let someone else take over and become the manager\u2014then, someone\u2019s got to lead. Do you know who it usually is?\u2014our wives. There are far too many homes today where men are there in title only, but they have given up. They have become passive\u2014another word for passive is <em>lazy<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, I work hard, too; but you know what? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInstead of plugging in the tube\u2014and unplugging from reality and just becoming that amoeba that wants to relax\u2014I fight it!\u00a0 Somedays, I don\u2019t win; but I\u2019m winning more than I\u2019m losing at home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: Dad\u2019s heart helps him shepherd his family. He is a minister.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a good friend who is the president of a corporation. He said: \u201cYou know, Dennis, I\u2019ve been able to lead our employees\u2014some 700 of them\u2014to several million in profits \/ nearly 100 million sales\u2014but I can tell you the truth, Dennis,\u201d\u2014he said\u2014\u201cWhen I sit down at the breakfast table or the dinner table with those little kids, those kids looking me in the eye\u2014those beady little eyes\u201d\u2014he said\u2014\u201cI\u2019m scared to <em>death<\/em> to say anything to lead them spiritually. I don\u2019t know what to <em>do<\/em>!\u00a0 How do I lead them?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at Malachi 4:6. This is a great one\u2014I\u2019m claiming this for our generation: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAnd He will restore the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse.\u201d\u00a0 We need a fresh revival of men, who unashamedly love their children \/ who\u2019ve got a relationship with them and who will deny gain and success to make their families work. What are you building, gentlemen?\u00a0 Are you building relationships or kingdoms?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a question in my notes. I want you to write it down: \u201cWhat do you remember most about your father?\u201d\u00a0 As you think about that, let me tell you about my dad. I can recall him slamming the door when he came through the doorway at 5:30 or 6 o\u2019clock in the evening\u2014it rattled the entire house. He wore Old Spice aftershave, and he always smelled like propane or gasoline, which he pumped for nearly 45 years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I can recall, as a young lad, crawling up in his lap and going to sleep against his chest and his hairy arms, smelling his perspiration of a hard day\u2019s work. And I can recall, as I grew up, how I would walk in\u2014I would take his newspaper, and I\u2019d pull it down, and say, \u201cHey, Dad, let\u2019s play catch.\u201d\u00a0 More than often, he would lift his tired body out of that seat of that easy chair that wore his imprint. He would put on his mitt and go out front in some grass that was browned by August and play catch with a young boy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey used to call him Hook Rainey. They called him Hook Rainey because he was a lefty; he had a curve ball that would go in there and just fall off the table, they said, right before it came to the plate\u2014Hook Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember going, at Christmastime with Hook Rainey, to deliver Christmas presents to people who were poor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember a funeral that brought out a third of the town\u2014500 people. You see, he didn\u2019t live in a big city, where you could mask it and hide it. He did business, day in and day out, where he grew up. One man said upon his death\u2014he said, \u201cI never heard a negative word about Hook Rainey.\u201d\u00a0 His integrity was beyond imagination\u2014the highest. He would let people cheat him before he would take advantage of them. Today, although he is dead, he lives. [Emotion in voice] He lives in the memory of a man who watched him\u2014who, today, draws on his integrity and the model in my own life.\u00a0 I miss him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a question I want you to write down in your notes, gentlemen:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do you want to be remembered?\u201d When your boys come to a FamilyLife conference 25\/30 years from now\u2014with a young lady they\u2019re getting ready to marry, and they sit in this room\u2014what are they going to say about you?\u00a0 Gentlemen, every one of us in this room is going to leave a legacy of some sort. Whether you have children or not, we are influencing people by the virtue of where we are in our culture and in our society. What will be the legacy that you leave?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018C\u2019: \u201cDad\u2019s character provides the basis for how he leads. He is a model.\u201d\u00a0 Look at Exodus 18. The context for this passage right here is\u2014Jethro, Moses\u2019 father-in-law, comes up to him one day and says, \u201cMoses, you\u2019re going to wear out the people and yourself too.\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cMoses, you\u2019ve, basically, got to delegate and find some leaders.\u201d\u00a0 Jethro gives Moses some key advice on the qualifications for whom to entrust with responsibility and to give that responsibility to them: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cFurthermore, you shall select, Moses, out of all the people, able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain. And you shall place them over them as leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.\u201d\u00a0 You know what is central to this right here? Write one word underneath here\u2014\u201ccharacter.\u201d\u00a0 And we\u2019ll find out in just a moment that leadership demands character. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDad is, first of all, the family manager\u2014\u201c\u2019A\u2019: He must manage his household and keep his children under control.\u201d\u00a0 First Timothy 3:4 says, \u201cHe must be one who manages his own household well keeping his children under control with all dignity.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCould I ask you a question?\u00a0 \u201cWhat would happen if you switched the energy you give your business with the energy you give your home?\u2014and you gave the energy that you now give at home to your business \/ and the energy you now give at your business to home? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat would happen to your business \/ what would happen to work?\u2014what would happen to home?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know that\u2019s an unfair question; because we work many, many hours away from the family unit. But many of us are so caught off guard by this that we give almost <em>all<\/em> our energy. The problem is\u2014not that we would want to switch it 100 percent\u2014but there would be some kind of balance in our life here, gentlemen. We\u2019ve got to have it\u2014the next generation demands it. Management demands that we be close to the people we manage\u2014and that means time \/ that means being close to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a principle of archery here. If the target was set up over here, by that wall over there, and I pulled back\u2014if you guys know anything about my abilities in archery, you\u2019d clear out\u2014but if we moved the target on this stage, then, maybe a few of you guys here ought to move. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy?\u2014because error increases with distance. And you and I, as the managers and leaders of our home, must reduce the distance between us and the people that we lead. You can\u2019t lead from afar\u2014you\u2019ve got to be there!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint \u2018B\u2019: \u201cDad manages by being prayerfully dependent upon God.\u201d\u00a0 Prayerfully dependent upon God\u2014asking God to help him lead: \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m doing. If You don\u2019t lead me up from here, I\u2019m not going. And I can\u2019t lead if You don\u2019t help me lead and give me wisdom of what to do. Help me head off things at the pass before we get into a crisis.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Gentlemen, most men today lead like a goal-line stand on defense. Their backs are to their own goal line there; and they are protecting it\u2014trying to keep the enemy from running over from a yard out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut guys, that\u2019s not the way we need to be leading. We need to have an offensive plan that\u2019s marching at mid-field\u2014that\u2019s going for a touchdown. Too much of parenting today is defensive, and it needs to be <em>offensive<\/em> parenting. As the managers and leaders of our home, that responsibility begins with <em>me<\/em> as the head of my home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLook at this verse, Proverbs 24:[3,4]: \u201cBy wisdom, a house is built. By understanding, it is established. And by knowledge, its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.\u201d\u00a0 Underline these words, would you?\u2014wisdom, understanding, knowledge. Let\u2019s look at those in reverse order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, \u201cHe manages with knowledge.\u201d\u00a0 I like a statement that Jim Dobson\u2019s father wrote to him in the \u201870s. I\u2019m going to read this to you because Dr. Dobson, who has had a powerful impact on the family, was influenced by his father also. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis dad wrote him this letter about his own misplaced priorities\u2014he says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour daughter is growing up, Jim, in the wickedest section of a world, much farther gone into moral decline than the world into which you were born. I have observed that the greatest delusion is to suppose that our children will be devout Christians simply because their parents have been or that any of them will enter into the Christian faith through any other means other than through their parents\u2019 deep travail of prayer and faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut listen to what he says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut this prayer demands time\u2014time that cannot be given if it is all signed, and conscripted, and laid on the altar of career ambition. Failure for you, at this point, would make you a mere success in your occupation\u2014a very pale and washed out affair indeed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe read that on the way to a speaking engagement in Hawaii; and, not long after, decided to film his film series that\u2019s now been seen by millions. \u201cHe manages with knowledge.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know what\u2019s going on around your kids?\u2014what the trouble they are facing?\u00a0 Look at Proverbs 27[:23], here: \u201cKnow well the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds.\u201d\u00a0 A good shepherd\u2019s got to be close to the sheep and care for them carefully and watch over them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNumber 2\u201d\u2014look at this: \u201cHe manages with understanding.\u201d\u00a0 He knows what\u2019s going on, and he knows what they have to handle. Do you know what one of the key things your children and mine have to learn how to deal with?\u2014is failure\u2014not just succeeding, but learning how to deal with their own failures. I love a statement that Lincoln made to the nation torn in the middle of the Civil War. He said\u2014and I quote: \u201cI am not concerned that you have fallen. I am concerned that you arise.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, as fathers, we can get so focused on where our kids blow it that we miss the point of teaching them, through their failures, and teaching that little boy to become a man\u2014to be faithful \/ to be responsible\u2014or that little girl, through her mistakes, how to become a young woman and a lady. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPoint 3: He manages with wisdom.\u201d\u00a0 I want you to write a definition of wisdom out here: \u201cWisdom is skill in everyday living.\u201d\u00a0 It takes the raw pieces and components of life and fits them together to make something meaningful, skillfully. Are you a man of wisdom?\u2014taking the components of life and training your children \/ equipping your wife to make meaning out of this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChuck Swindoll writes a little statement that is called \u201cMy Dad.\u201d I want to read it to you, because it talked about how his dad used all three of these as he raised him: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad died last night. He left like he lived\u2014quietly, graciously, with dignity. Without demands, or harsh words, or even a frown, he surrendered himself, a tired, frail, humble gentleman into the waiting arms of his Savior. Death, selfish and cursed enemy of man, had won another battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I stroked the hair from his forehead and kissed him goodbye, a hundred boyhood memories played around in my head: When I learned to ride a bike, he was there. When I wrestled with the multiplication table, his quick wit erased the hassle. When I discovered the adventure of driving a car, he was near, encouraging me. When I mentioned a young woman I had fallen in love with, he pulled me aside and talked to me straight about being responsible for her welfare and her happiness. And when I did a hitch in the Marine Corps, the discipline I had learned from him made the transition easier. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrom him\u2014[Chuck writes]\u2014I learned how to open oyster shells, and fix crab gumbo, and chili, and popcorn, and make rafts out of old inner tubes and gunny sacks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was continually amazed at his ability to make things out of old pieces, and tie fragile mantles on old Coleman<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> lanterns, keep a fire going in the rain, play a harmonica with his hands behind his back, and keep three strong-willed kids from tearing the house down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLast night, I realized I had him to thank for my deep love for America, and for knowing how to tenderly care for my wife, and for laughing at impossibilities, and for some of the habits I\u2019ve picked up\u2014like approaching people with a positive spirit rather than a negative one\u2014staying with a task until it\u2019s finished, taking good care of my personal belongings, keeping my shoes shined, speaking up rather than mumbling, respecting authority, standing alone if necessary in support of my personal convictions rather than giving in to more popular opinions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor these things, I am deeply indebted to the man who raised me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCertain smells and sounds\u2014[he writes]\u2014now remind me of my dad: oyster stew, the ocean breeze, smoke from an expensive cigar, the nostalgic whine of a harmonica, a camping lantern and white gas, car polish, fun songs from the \u201830s and \u201840s, freshly- mowed grass, and a shrill whistle from his father to his kids around suppertime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[He finishes\u2014he says:] Last night, I said, \u201cGoodbye.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m still trying to believe it; but my father leaves in his legacy a well-marked Bible I treasure, a series of feelings that I need to deepen my roots, and a thousand memories that comfort me as I replace denial with acceptance and praise. He died last night, or did he?\u00a0 The memories are as fresh as this morning\u2019s sunrise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWow!\u00a0 Men, we\u2019re going to leave an imprint for future generations. You and I, as fathers, have one of the greatest privileges\u2014to imprint young lives, who will carry on into future generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part of a message given to fathers, back in 1994\u2014Dennis Rainey speaking at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. That may be a few decades old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I was thinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014it\u2019s still timely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is still timeless. Dads have got to step up, assume the responsibility, and realize that they\u2019re\u2014they are shaping the next generation. They need to assume their responsibility and do it well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You spent a lot of time in the book that you wrote, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014you talked about being a dad, a lot, in that book. It was a call to men to step up and embrace our responsibilities, as men; but being a dad is a big part of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is; and for a father to reach down to a boy\u2014who\u2019s on that boyhood step, or the adolescent step, or even the early manhood step\u2014and to coach him about what it means to grow into manhood and assume the responsibilities that men must embrace. Then, set their focus on the steps ahead of being a mentor and a patriarch. By the way, the word, \u201cpatriarch,\u201d is <em>not<\/em> a dirty word. It is a <em>noble<\/em> calling when you do it God\u2019s way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s something that you spend some time on in your book, <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. You talk about the steps of a man\u2019s lifetime\u2014the journey that we\u2019re all on\u2014from boyhood, to adolescence, to manhood, to mentor, and then, to patriarch.
