As he looked through the Bible, he began to realize there was a turning point in the Chatmon family tree that had taken place during her lifetime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>What we saw was a very significant shift in our family when my great, great grandfather came to Christ. The men in the generation before him had not had a personal relationship with Christ, from her perspective. The reason we knew that is that in her Bible were the names of the men she was praying for and the recording of testimonials that she had written down. You didn\u2019t start off parenting with a business plan for how you were going to raise your kids; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, are you kidding?!\u00a0 When Ashley was born\u2014I remember this in the hospital\u2014first of all, I was glad I didn\u2019t pass out. [Laughter]\u00a0 I just wasn\u2019t prepared for it\u2014I\u2019m sorry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad you remember everything in the hospital. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All the birthing classes we went to\u2014I just wasn\u2019t quite ready for the <em>miracle<\/em> of it all; but when they pulled that little girl out, I remember thinking: \u201cAre there any instructions on her tummy?\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201csomething!\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201con her back?\u00a0 How do you do this thing called being a parent?\u201d because, all of a sudden, you move from being a husband and a wife to a dad and a mom, who are supposed to have a mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You are now responsible for\u2014not just the physical wellbeing of a child \/an actual human being whose life you must protect and preserve\u2014but you\u2019re responsible for the soul of that child as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You are\u2014and the spiritual development of that soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got somebody here, with us in the studio\u2014not just somebody. It\u2019s Terence Chatmon joining us again. Welcome back, Terence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>It\u2019s good to be back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Terence is the CEO of Fellowship of Companies for Christ International. It\u2019s a network of executive leaders who band together to use their influence and position to honor Christ, as executives. He is the father of three children \/ the husband of one wife, whose name is Wanda, for 34 years. He\u2019s written a book called <em>Do You Children Believe? <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to begin right there\u2014<em>today<\/em>, do they believe?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>You know, by the grace of God, they do\u2014despite us, I always say. What we pointed them to\u2014was the cross\u2014to really what He\u2019s done versus what we do. I wanted them to understand <em>completely<\/em> what He\u2019s done. See, I grew up really under what I call performance theology. I grew up in a place that I was going to hell every weekend\u2014it was just a matter for what. I was trying to earn that favor. I knew who the Lord was \/ I knew who Christ was, as a Redeemer; but I was trying to <em>earn<\/em> that favor. It was a religion, if you will, of works. I realized it\u2019s not about religion; it\u2019s about relationship. I wanted them to understand and have a <em>deep<\/em> relationship and understand that Christ is the only sufficiency in this world and after. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they do, by the grace of God. They understand that they have a sinful nature in there that needed to be watered and all types of stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like Peter saying\u2014you know?\u2014\u201cJust wash me all over,\u201d at this point; but I wanted them to <em>clearly<\/em> understand what He has done on that cross. The idea is that they would fall madly in love with what He\u2019s done, and His life, and the life\u2014that He came from the heavenlies\u2014that He didn\u2019t have to come and pay the ultimate penalty. You know, He died\u2014and we all know the story\u2014He rose; but He is also interceding on our behalf right now. Praise the Lord for that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI give Him all praise, honor, and glory. He uses us, and He works in us and through us for this purpose, as parents; and we have a great responsibility, but it\u2019s also a great privilege and honor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there ever a season, as there has been with some of our kids, where they weren\u2019t sure that the straight and narrow was the path they wanted to walk on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, my son tells a wonderful story in the book. In fact, his endorsement\u2014I made sure, out of all the folks we could get to endorse this book, I wanted my kids and my wife\u2014by the way, that one wife, too, for 34 years\u2014I wanted them to tell their story, not my story, and how this has impacted their life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe talks about a time of doubting this whole process\u2014doubting his faith \/ doubting this whole planning process, what we were going through\u2014but the good news is that, even today, after all the kids are out of the house, and they have their own families and so forth, we still do family devotion time every other week from 8 to 9\u2014five cell phones going on a conference call. My job is to lay out the year. Now, I get a chance to watch them teach and demonstrate what we had talked about, you know, some 10\/15 years now. We\u2019re still doing it\u2014we\u2019ve made a commitment \/ a covenant, if you will, to continue this process for the rest of our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys, the idea is not about this generation for me. They were\u2014I wanted them to know they were the <em>sixth<\/em> generation, in the Chatmon family, to carry this cross. Our lives and our family were <em>dramatically<\/em> changed as a result of the Lord coming into it. I wanted them to understand that their responsibility goes to the grandchild, to their children, and their children, and so forth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe should seek generational impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That relay race of six generations\u2014the baton was almost <em>dropped<\/em> by <em>you<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your wife had to pick up a spiritual 2 x 4 and whack you between the eyes some 15 years into your marriage and say, \u201cTerence, wake up!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>So, you had to remind me of that, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you write about it\u2014it\u2019s where it all started. Now, I\u2019ve got a feeling we probably have some listeners here who are either that man or that woman; and they are not doing their assignment. They are not taking this, wholeheartedly, as an assignment from God to raise their children in the ways of God, and the spiritual growth of their kids, and make a handoff in a way so that their kids can honor God in their generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, first of all, how would they know if they are that man or not?\u00a0 If somebody is trying to do a self-analysis, as a parent, and they say: \u201cOkay; here\u2019s what we\u2019re doing. We\u2019re taking our kids to Sunday school. We\u2019ve got them in the Christian school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe buy <em>VeggieTales<\/em> videos for them.\u201d\u00a0 So, they\u2019re going: \u201cAm I doing what I need to be doing?\u00a0 How can I tell whether I am being the intentional, purposeful parent or whether I\u2019m just kind of keeping this in my environment?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t be so simplistic to say, \u201cThis is the total answer,\u201d but I\u2019d like to make a pass at it. Deuteronomy 6 talks about waking up in the morning, with a hundred pound sack of flour on your back, that\u2019s a burden\u2014and it\u2019s the burden of passing on the truth about God and your experience of God to your children on a day-in and day-out basis. If you\u2019re not feeling that burden\u2014as you arise in the morning, as you go throughout the day, as you go to bed in the evening\u2014then, I think, Bob, it might be time to pull back and do a little spiritual wheel-alignment of your own life: \u201cAre you about the King\u2019s duties today and what you\u2019re doing?\u00a0 Are you fulfilling what He commanded you to do?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow would you answer the question, Terence?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Well, you know, I had to look at my core values: \u201cWhat were the non-negotiables in my life?\u201d\u00a0 He gives us three disciplines\u2014very sure \/ maybe more: \u201cAre you in God\u2019s Word?\u00a0 Are they in God\u2019s Word?\u201d\u2014number one. Secondly, prayer life: \u201cWhat does that look like in your life?\u00a0 What does it look like in your children\u2019s lives?\u201d\u00a0 Then, thirdly, worshipping\u2014today\u2019s worship\u2014you\u2019re separating the kids \/ you\u2019re in multiple places. Then, you go out to IHOP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, or wherever you go; and the next thing you know\u2014you never even talk about the sermon and never talk about the truth that\u2019s been shared. Less than ten percent of Christians are talking about what they shared on Sunday and what they\u2019re talking about during the week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we\u2019re really going to look at prioritizing our time\u2014I call them non-negotiables: \u201cWhat are the non-negotiables in your life that need to be looked at, and examined, and prioritized on your weekly schedule and your daily schedule?\u00a0 How are you doing in those areas?\u201d But I want to make sure we don\u2019t take a set of handcuffs off and put another set of handcuffs on\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this is not a works-theology. This is a theology that is birthed in joy and great love and compassion for the Father. You know, the day that my kids <em>enjoy<\/em> reading God\u2019s Word, praying together, worshipping together\u2014in our case, doing devotional time together\u2014it\u2019s a sweet time, and a sweet aroma around our house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You started off on your plan to try to realign things, spiritually, in your family. You started off saying, \u201cWe\u2019re going to, once a month, get together and have this kind of family devotion time.\u201d Your kids rebelled against that; didn\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Yes; by\u2014here I am, the spiritual leader \/ I\u2019ve got all this great wisdom. I\u2019m going to them; and I say: \u201cYes; I\u2019m travelling about 80 percent around the world. So, I\u2019ve got a great idea. Why don\u2019t we meet once a month and tackle this?\u201d\u00a0 They looked at me: \u201cOnce a month, Dad! Can you imagine talking to mom once a month and having a great relationship with her?\u201d\u2014an ouch moment; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I got it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cWell, what about\u2014we\u2019ve got to get together at least daily, obviously; but what about once a week in a formal way?\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019m going, \u201cOnce a month.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re going, \u201cOnce a week.\u201d\u00a0 That tells you the spiritual level that I was on, but we ended up doing every other week together\u2014I felt that was a commitment I could make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And they <em>loved<\/em> this time getting together as a family?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, they loved getting together. We were punctual and had a great time. We made it fun.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, I\u2019ve got to know what you did, because my kids didn\u2019t always cherish our getting together for a little spiritual alignment at our house; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I can\u2019t imagine that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get together, and we\u2019ll have some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re such a fun daddy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cfamily devotions,\u201d they weren\u2019t always like: \u201cOh, yes!\u00a0 Let me turn off the computer \/ the TV. I\u2019ve been waiting for family devotions all week!\u201d\u00a0 How\u2019d you pull this off?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>We made it a lot of fun, Bob. We made a lot of competitive things, and we had games and fun stuff around the house. I think about that first putt-putt game\u2014by the way, I did keep the score card because I was victorious in that process\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but I digress. It was a fun time, and we just did fun things; right?\u00a0 We talked about Jesus, whether we were going bowling, or whether we were going to a baseball game, or whether we were sitting around the table and just sharing life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one thing I found interesting to them\u2014and probably most people\u2014is I asked them questions and talked and designed my devotions around their life: \u201cTalk to me about your life in high school,\u201d or \u201c\u2026your life in elementary school. Tell me what happened today in your life.\u201d\u00a0 So, basically, I engaged them by encouraging them to talk about their life and their life experiences. Then, I tried to tie back into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you just kept doing that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Just kept doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014week, after week, after week or every other week. There was a time when your son was in college, years later, when you knew that it had clicked. There was a phone call he made back to the family to tie back in. Tell them about how he wanted to tie back into the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, I tell you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this was one we\u2019d been praying for, thinking: \u201cIs he hearing anything that I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 Maybe, he\u2019s not hearing anything I\u2019m saying.\u201d\u00a0 And so, he\u2019s at university; and he\u2019s producing\u2014he\u2019s a music producer at Belmont University\u2014big music business school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>So, he\u2019s producing a major event there. I mean, this is a big deal. He stops the production at 9 o\u2019clock and says, \u201cI need to step away for an hour.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Talking about the whole cast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>The whole cast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and the crew. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>This is time and money; okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>And he gets on\u2014he says: \u201cI need to step off. I have some time to spend with my family.\u201d\u00a0 So, he stepped\u2014he didn\u2019t even really tell them exactly what he was doing\u2014he stepped off for an hour, went through our family devotional time that we had designed; then, he came back in. They said, \u201cWhere have you been?\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cGuys, every other week, I\u2019m committed to take time with my family and walk through a devotion. We\u2019ve committed to this for the rest of our lives. That\u2019s just what I completed\u2014was that time with the Lord of my family.\u201d\u00a0 They were just absolutely floored about that and said, \u201cTell me more.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, our kids\u2014they do have a passion for this. We can\u2019t water down this gospel\u2014we have to go straight it \/ we have to approach life with the truth. In this case, I realized, \u201cMy son got it!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, this every other week devotion\u2014when he went to college, he was still on the hook for it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, not only when he went to college\u2014we still do it <em>today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He got married\u2014he\u2019s still on the hook?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Still went through it. He\u2019s going through it until I can\u2019t see anymore\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014and walk anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019ve got your kids\u2014and I presume, maybe, their spouses are joining them now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>You know, here is the beauty of it. We get a chance to know\u2014not only just to meet\u2014but to <em>know<\/em> our kids\u2019 spouses. In fact, the way we\u2019ve designed it is that before they actually marry\u2014now, it\u2019s not legalistic \/ I mean, they don\u2019t have to do this, obviously\u2014although we might disown them; who knows?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But the way we designed it is that the kids\u2014if they have a <em>significant<\/em> other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they would get on the phone call every other week when they are really serious about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I got a chance to <em>really<\/em> get to know my daughter-in-law. In fact, I believe she came to Christ in a deep way as a result of those phone calls. She thought she knew a little bit, but we\u2014it\u2019s like Hebrews 6:1 says: \u201cHey, let\u2019s get off the milk\u201d; right?\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s go to this meat. Let\u2019s go to this deep understanding of God\u2019s Word.\u201d\u00a0 I believe she came to a deeper relationship with the Lord as a result of our phone calls. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, my sons-in-law\u2014I got a chance to get to know both of them. It was a <em>rich<\/em> moment. I didn\u2019t just know them in name and so forth. I had a personal relationship with them as a result of these devotional times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, there might be some listening, who think: \u201cThis sounds a little controlling to me. I mean, you should have released these kids. The fact that you\u2019re still having devotions with your kids after they\u2019re married just feels like you\u2019re kind of reaching in and trying to direct their lives when they should be more on their own.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>You know what\u2019s interesting?\u00a0 They\u2019re the ones that came up with this covenant\u2014not me!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>That\u2019s kind of cool; right?\u00a0 Can you imagine your kids dragging you to church every day?\u2014that\u2019s a win. But no; they actually\u2014during that time in Lake Lanier, we actually came up with about six or seven things in our covenantal agreement that we would adhere to for the rest of our lives. It\u2019s not\u2014they can walk away any year. They can sign up for a year, and they can walk away after a year. Each year, I keep trying to kick them out; but they keep coming back!\u00a0 I can\u2019t get rid of them\u2014so it\u2019s a good thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; I know there has got to be a listener, right now, who is as curious as I am: \u201cWhat did you cover last week?\u00a0 What was the lesson, and how did you do it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re going through the New Testament this year. My job is to lay out the year. We\u2019re always going to be in God\u2019s Word, prayer, and some form of worship together every year. This year, we\u2019re going through the New Testament again. So, we\u2019re now going through that process. The beauty is\u2014they can also teach. My job is to assign who is going to be the teaching leader, so to speak, for the week. And then, whoever the spouse of the teaching leader\u2014they pray for the group. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, whoever taught\u2014they <em>end<\/em> the session in prayer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis past week, we\u2019re going through the New Testament. We\u2019re in the book of John now, and we\u2019re starting to go through that. We have a daily Bible\u2014a chronological daily Bible\u2014that we go through. It tells you how many days and what to read each day and so forth. Then, we get on the phone, talk about: \u201cWhat have you read?\u00a0 What have you learned?\u00a0 What truths have been shared?\u00a0 How do you apply this to your life?\u00a0 What challenges do you have in life, and what are you looking at?\u201d\u00a0 I tell you\u2014it\u2019s a <em>rich<\/em> moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Terence, as you were talking, I couldn\u2019t help but think how you\u2019re mirroring what Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica. Paul said to them\u2014he said, \u201cFor you know how like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.\u201d\u00a0 What Paul is saying here: \u201cI\u2019m <em>assuming<\/em> that the daddies are doing their duty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cthat they are encouraging, imploring, exhorting, and cheering on their kids as they make right choices.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think sometimes, Bob, as our kids grow up and become adults, we can underestimate the importance of just a good word from Mom \/ just a good word from Dad\u2014just to wrap your arms around a child over the phone or, maybe, it\u2019s a Skype call\u2014but to cheer them on as they do life, because they\u2019ve got a lot of challenges today in this generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You mention, Terence, that there was an aunt in your family who played a significant role, spiritually, in your own development; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>One section in our plan is genealogy. I never realized how powerful this section would be. In fact, I questioned it when I first put it in the planning process; because we know it\u2019s a personal relationship with the Lord\u2014it\u2019s not generational\u2014but I did want to understand our spiritual walk from a legacy and heritage standpoint. So, I went to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe is the keeper of genealogy in the family. I thought she just had a few documents\u2014she had <em>binders<\/em> of documents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She\u2019s the family historian. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>She\u2019s the family historian. She went back and shared with me documents back from 1824 about the spiritual legacy of our family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>I was in tears after reading them. What we saw was a very significant shift in our family when my great, great grandfather came to Christ. The <em>men<\/em> in the generations before him had not had a personal relationship with Christ, from her perspective. The reason we knew that is that in her Bible were the names of the men she was praying for and the recordings of testimonials that she had written down. That was the richest resource I have ever read\u2014except for those 66 books that I mentioned. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>As I read that, I looked at the history of these men\u2014the women had a personal relationship with Christ but not the men\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but when my great, great grandfather came to the Lord, we saw a <em>significant<\/em> shift in our family, spiritually. You know, so many things\u2014we probably don\u2019t have time to talk about today\u2014but boy, I realized that: \u201cWow! What a rich legacy here.\u201d\u00a0 I challenged the children that they were the sixth generation: \u201cDon\u2019t drop the baton.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also, certainly, don\u2019t want to give the impression that we are this spiritually-amazing family and doing all these amazing things. In fact, man, I fall short <em>daily<\/em>; but I believe that\u2019s why He gives us this idea of repentance at the cross daily. I\u2019m teaching our kids what repentance is and how to go to Him on a daily basis. It\u2019s not the decision that you\u2019re making, necessarily; it\u2019s where you are, when you\u2019re making that decision\u2014make it on the altar\u2014take it to Him\u2014He will lead, guide, and direct your path. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we\u2019ve given our listeners plenty to chew on today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20: <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d like to challenge you to get Terence\u2019s book, <em>Do Your Children Believe?;<\/em> because,\u00a0 in the back of it, there is a little project back here called a \u201cGenerational Spiritual Development Plan\u201d that, frankly, Terence, I think my be worth the price of the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s pretty simple\u2014but you just outline how a couple \/ a mom and a dad\u2014maybe, a single parent\u2014needs to sit down and evaluate what their vision is for their family, their mission, their values. When I say, \u201cvalues,\u201d I\u2019m talking about core values. Barbara and I did this as well. I would have to\u2014I hate to use the word in defining it\u2014but it was <em>invaluable<\/em> for Barbara and me to hammer out what our core beliefs were \/ our core values\u2014then, try to back it up by being intentional about teaching them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of us need help and encouragement going through life. I feel like you\u2019ve done this in your book, Terence. I\u2019m grateful to God for you, for the model your family is, and I pray that your legacy does continue on for six more generations beyond the six that were handed to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Well, thank you, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust very quickly\u2014you know, we just talked this last week. The number-one issue, when we teach this, is core value section. A man stood up\u2014he says: \u201cTerence, I realized I have values, but they are all secular in nature. My guiding principles are not really reflecting who I say I am.\u201d\u00a0 So, we started there before vision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to challenge and encourage everyone that the idea is: \u201cI don\u2019t want to see another generation go by who has, at least, not heard the name, Christ Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 For me, it\u2019s that Judges 2:10 moment\u2014that just one generation after Joshua died, an entire <em>nation<\/em> fell away from what they had been taught. Are we at that Judges 2:10 moment?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; it says, \u201cThey did not know God or practice His commandments.\u201d\u00a0 You look at our nation today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this is why this broadcast is so important for our country\u2014but also, most importantly, for the listeners\u2014to just encourage you to keep on keeping on and do your duty for the glory of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is that theme verse in the book of Judges, where it says, \u201cThere was no king in the land, and every man did what was right in his own eyes.\u201d\u00a0 And you look at our culture today and say, \u201cThat\u2019s the value system.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to create a culture where everybody does what seems right in their own eyes, and that is a path to destruction. That\u2019s not going to lead you toward godliness \/ it\u2019s not going to lead you toward life or light\u2014it\u2019s going to lead you toward destruction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would echo what you said, Dennis: \u201cWe are very grateful for the listeners, who are not just listeners, but an active part of this ministry.\u201d\u00a0 As you support the work of FamilyLife, you are making it possible for all that we\u2019re doing to reach more people. As he looked through the Bible, he began to realize there was a turning point in the Chatmon family tree that had taken place during her lifetime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>What we saw was a very significant shift in our family when my great, great grandfather came to Christ. The men in the generation before him had not had a personal relationship with Christ, from her perspective. The reason we knew that is that in her Bible were the names of the men she was praying for and the recording of testimonials that she had written down. You didn\u2019t start off parenting with a business plan for how you were going to raise your kids; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, are you kidding?!\u00a0 When Ashley was born\u2014I remember this in the hospital\u2014first of all, I was glad I didn\u2019t pass out. [Laughter]\u00a0 I just wasn\u2019t prepared for it\u2014I\u2019m sorry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad you remember everything in the hospital. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>All the birthing classes we went to\u2014I just wasn\u2019t quite ready for the <em>miracle<\/em> of it all; but when they pulled that little girl out, I remember thinking: \u201cAre there any instructions on her tummy?\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201csomething!\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201con her back?\u00a0 How do you do this thing called being a parent?\u201d because, all of a sudden, you move from being a husband and a wife to a dad and a mom, who are supposed to have a mission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You are now responsible for\u2014not just the physical wellbeing of a child \/an actual human being whose life you must protect and preserve\u2014but you\u2019re responsible for the soul of that child as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You are\u2014and the spiritual development of that soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got somebody here, with us in the studio\u2014not just somebody. It\u2019s Terence Chatmon joining us again. Welcome back, Terence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>It\u2019s good to be back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Terence is the CEO of Fellowship of Companies for Christ International. It\u2019s a network of executive leaders who band together to use their influence and position to honor Christ, as executives. He is the father of three children \/ the husband of one wife, whose name is Wanda, for 34 years. He\u2019s written a book called <em>Do You Children Believe? <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to begin right there\u2014<em>today<\/em>, do they believe?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>You know, by the grace of God, they do\u2014despite us, I always say. What we pointed them to\u2014was the cross\u2014to really what He\u2019s done versus what we do. I wanted them to understand <em>completely<\/em> what He\u2019s done. See, I grew up really under what I call performance theology. I grew up in a place that I was going to hell every weekend\u2014it was just a matter for what. I was trying to earn that favor. I knew who the Lord was \/ I knew who Christ was, as a Redeemer; but I was trying to <em>earn<\/em> that favor. It was a religion, if you will, of works. I realized it\u2019s not about religion; it\u2019s about relationship. I wanted them to understand and have a <em>deep<\/em> relationship and understand that Christ is the only sufficiency in this world and after. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they do, by the grace of God. They understand that they have a sinful nature in there that needed to be watered and all types of stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like Peter saying\u2014you know?\u2014\u201cJust wash me all over,\u201d at this point; but I wanted them to <em>clearly<\/em> understand what He has done on that cross. The idea is that they would fall madly in love with what He\u2019s done, and His life, and the life\u2014that He came from the heavenlies\u2014that He didn\u2019t have to come and pay the ultimate penalty. You know, He died\u2014and we all know the story\u2014He rose; but He is also interceding on our behalf right now. Praise the Lord for that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI give Him all praise, honor, and glory. He uses us, and He works in us and through us for this purpose, as parents; and we have a great responsibility, but it\u2019s also a great privilege and honor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there ever a season, as there has been with some of our kids, where they weren\u2019t sure that the straight and narrow was the path they wanted to walk on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, my son tells a wonderful story in the book. In fact, his endorsement\u2014I made sure, out of all the folks we could get to endorse this book, I wanted my kids and my wife\u2014by the way, that one wife, too, for 34 years\u2014I wanted them to tell their story, not my story, and how this has impacted their life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe talks about a time of doubting this whole process\u2014doubting his faith \/ doubting this whole planning process, what we were going through\u2014but the good news is that, even today, after all the kids are out of the house, and they have their own families and so forth, we still do family devotion time every other week from 8 to 9\u2014five cell phones going on a conference call. My job is to lay out the year. Now, I get a chance to watch them teach and demonstrate what we had talked about, you know, some 10\/15 years now. We\u2019re still doing it\u2014we\u2019ve made a commitment \/ a covenant, if you will, to continue this process for the rest of our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys, the idea is not about this generation for me. They were\u2014I wanted them to know they were the <em>sixth<\/em> generation, in the Chatmon family, to carry this cross. Our lives and our family were <em>dramatically<\/em> changed as a result of the Lord coming into it. I wanted them to understand that their responsibility goes to the grandchild, to their children, and their children, and so forth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe should seek generational impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That relay race of six generations\u2014the baton was almost <em>dropped<\/em> by <em>you<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your wife had to pick up a spiritual 2 x 4 and whack you between the eyes some 15 years into your marriage and say, \u201cTerence, wake up!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>So, you had to remind me of that, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you write about it\u2014it\u2019s where it all started. Now, I\u2019ve got a feeling we probably have some listeners here who are either that man or that woman; and they are not doing their assignment. They are not taking this, wholeheartedly, as an assignment from God to raise their children in the ways of God, and the spiritual growth of their kids, and make a handoff in a way so that their kids can honor God in their generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, first of all, how would they know if they are that man or not?\u00a0 If somebody is trying to do a self-analysis, as a parent, and they say: \u201cOkay; here\u2019s what we\u2019re doing. We\u2019re taking our kids to Sunday school. We\u2019ve got them in the Christian school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe buy <em>VeggieTales<\/em> videos for them.\u201d\u00a0 So, they\u2019re going: \u201cAm I doing what I need to be doing?\u00a0 How can I tell whether I am being the intentional, purposeful parent or whether I\u2019m just kind of keeping this in my environment?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I wouldn\u2019t be so simplistic to say, \u201cThis is the total answer,\u201d but I\u2019d like to make a pass at it. Deuteronomy 6 talks about waking up in the morning, with a hundred pound sack of flour on your back, that\u2019s a burden\u2014and it\u2019s the burden of passing on the truth about God and your experience of God to your children on a day-in and day-out basis. If you\u2019re not feeling that burden\u2014as you arise in the morning, as you go throughout the day, as you go to bed in the evening\u2014then, I think, Bob, it might be time to pull back and do a little spiritual wheel-alignment of your own life: \u201cAre you about the King\u2019s duties today and what you\u2019re doing?\u00a0 Are you fulfilling what He commanded you to do?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow would you answer the question, Terence?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong><br><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Well, you know, I had to look at my core values: \u201cWhat were the non-negotiables in my life?\u201d\u00a0 He gives us three disciplines\u2014very sure \/ maybe more: \u201cAre you in God\u2019s Word?\u00a0 Are they in God\u2019s Word?\u201d\u2014number one. Secondly, prayer life: \u201cWhat does that look like in your life?\u00a0 What does it look like in your children\u2019s lives?\u201d\u00a0 Then, thirdly, worshipping\u2014today\u2019s worship\u2014you\u2019re separating the kids \/ you\u2019re in multiple places. Then, you go out to IHOP<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, or wherever you go; and the next thing you know\u2014you never even talk about the sermon and never talk about the truth that\u2019s been shared. Less than ten percent of Christians are talking about what they shared on Sunday and what they\u2019re talking about during the week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we\u2019re really going to look at prioritizing our time\u2014I call them non-negotiables: \u201cWhat are the non-negotiables in your life that need to be looked at, and examined, and prioritized on your weekly schedule and your daily schedule?\u00a0 How are you doing in those areas?\u201d But I want to make sure we don\u2019t take a set of handcuffs off and put another set of handcuffs on\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this is not a works-theology. This is a theology that is birthed in joy and great love and compassion for the Father. You know, the day that my kids <em>enjoy<\/em> reading God\u2019s Word, praying together, worshipping together\u2014in our case, doing devotional time together\u2014it\u2019s a sweet time, and a sweet aroma around our house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You started off on your plan to try to realign things, spiritually, in your family. You started off saying, \u201cWe\u2019re going to, once a month, get together and have this kind of family devotion time.\u201d Your kids rebelled against that; didn\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Yes; by\u2014here I am, the spiritual leader \/ I\u2019ve got all this great wisdom. I\u2019m going to them; and I say: \u201cYes; I\u2019m travelling about 80 percent around the world. So, I\u2019ve got a great idea. Why don\u2019t we meet once a month and tackle this?\u201d\u00a0 They looked at me: \u201cOnce a month, Dad! Can you imagine talking to mom once a month and having a great relationship with her?\u201d\u2014an ouch moment; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I got it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cWell, what about\u2014we\u2019ve got to get together at least daily, obviously; but what about once a week in a formal way?\u201d\u00a0 So, I\u2019m going, \u201cOnce a month.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re going, \u201cOnce a week.\u201d\u00a0 That tells you the spiritual level that I was on, but we ended up doing every other week together\u2014I felt that was a commitment I could make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And they <em>loved<\/em> this time getting together as a family?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, they loved getting together. We were punctual and had a great time. We made it fun.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, I\u2019ve got to know what you did, because my kids didn\u2019t always cherish our getting together for a little spiritual alignment at our house; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I can\u2019t imagine that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get together, and we\u2019ll have some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re such a fun daddy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cfamily devotions,\u201d they weren\u2019t always like: \u201cOh, yes!\u00a0 Let me turn off the computer \/ the TV. I\u2019ve been waiting for family devotions all week!\u201d\u00a0 How\u2019d you pull this off?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>We made it a lot of fun, Bob. We made a lot of competitive things, and we had games and fun stuff around the house. I think about that first putt-putt game\u2014by the way, I did keep the score card because I was victorious in that process\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but I digress. It was a fun time, and we just did fun things; right?\u00a0 We talked about Jesus, whether we were going bowling, or whether we were going to a baseball game, or whether we were sitting around the table and just sharing life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one thing I found interesting to them\u2014and probably most people\u2014is I asked them questions and talked and designed my devotions around their life: \u201cTalk to me about your life in high school,\u201d or \u201c\u2026your life in elementary school. Tell me what happened today in your life.\u201d\u00a0 So, basically, I engaged them by encouraging them to talk about their life and their life experiences. Then, I tried to tie back into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you just kept doing that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Just kept doing it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014week, after week, after week or every other week. There was a time when your son was in college, years later, when you knew that it had clicked. There was a phone call he made back to the family to tie back in. Tell them about how he wanted to tie back into the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, I tell you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this was one we\u2019d been praying for, thinking: \u201cIs he hearing anything that I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 Maybe, he\u2019s not hearing anything I\u2019m saying.\u201d\u00a0 And so, he\u2019s at university; and he\u2019s producing\u2014he\u2019s a music producer at Belmont University\u2014big music business school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>So, he\u2019s producing a major event there. I mean, this is a big deal. He stops the production at 9 o\u2019clock and says, \u201cI need to step away for an hour.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Talking about the whole cast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>The whole cast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and the crew. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>This is time and money; okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>And he gets on\u2014he says: \u201cI need to step off. I have some time to spend with my family.\u201d\u00a0 So, he stepped\u2014he didn\u2019t even really tell them exactly what he was doing\u2014he stepped off for an hour, went through our family devotional time that we had designed; then, he came back in. They said, \u201cWhere have you been?\u201d\u00a0 He said: \u201cGuys, every other week, I\u2019m committed to take time with my family and walk through a devotion. We\u2019ve committed to this for the rest of our lives. That\u2019s just what I completed\u2014was that time with the Lord of my family.\u201d\u00a0 They were just absolutely floored about that and said, \u201cTell me more.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, our kids\u2014they do have a passion for this. We can\u2019t water down this gospel\u2014we have to go straight it \/ we have to approach life with the truth. In this case, I realized, \u201cMy son got it!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, this every other week devotion\u2014when he went to college, he was still on the hook for it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Oh, not only when he went to college\u2014we still do it <em>today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He got married\u2014he\u2019s still on the hook?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Still went through it. He\u2019s going through it until I can\u2019t see anymore\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014and walk anymore. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, you\u2019ve got your kids\u2014and I presume, maybe, their spouses are joining them now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>You know, here is the beauty of it. We get a chance to know\u2014not only just to meet\u2014but to <em>know<\/em> our kids\u2019 spouses. In fact, the way we\u2019ve designed it is that before they actually marry\u2014now, it\u2019s not legalistic \/ I mean, they don\u2019t have to do this, obviously\u2014although we might disown them; who knows?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But the way we designed it is that the kids\u2014if they have a <em>significant<\/em> other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they would get on the phone call every other week when they are really serious about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I got a chance to <em>really<\/em> get to know my daughter-in-law. In fact, I believe she came to Christ in a deep way as a result of those phone calls. She thought she knew a little bit, but we\u2014it\u2019s like Hebrews 6:1 says: \u201cHey, let\u2019s get off the milk\u201d; right?\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s go to this meat. Let\u2019s go to this deep understanding of God\u2019s Word.\u201d\u00a0 I believe she came to a deeper relationship with the Lord as a result of our phone calls. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, my sons-in-law\u2014I got a chance to get to know both of them. It was a <em>rich<\/em> moment. I didn\u2019t just know them in name and so forth. I had a personal relationship with them as a result of these devotional times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, there might be some listening, who think: \u201cThis sounds a little controlling to me. I mean, you should have released these kids. The fact that you\u2019re still having devotions with your kids after they\u2019re married just feels like you\u2019re kind of reaching in and trying to direct their lives when they should be more on their own.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>You know what\u2019s interesting?\u00a0 They\u2019re the ones that came up with this covenant\u2014not me!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>That\u2019s kind of cool; right?\u00a0 Can you imagine your kids dragging you to church every day?\u2014that\u2019s a win. But no; they actually\u2014during that time in Lake Lanier, we actually came up with about six or seven things in our covenantal agreement that we would adhere to for the rest of our lives. It\u2019s not\u2014they can walk away any year. They can sign up for a year, and they can walk away after a year. Each year, I keep trying to kick them out; but they keep coming back!\u00a0 I can\u2019t get rid of them\u2014so it\u2019s a good thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; I know there has got to be a listener, right now, who is as curious as I am: \u201cWhat did you cover last week?\u00a0 What was the lesson, and how did you do it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re going through the New Testament this year. My job is to lay out the year. We\u2019re always going to be in God\u2019s Word, prayer, and some form of worship together every year. This year, we\u2019re going through the New Testament again. So, we\u2019re now going through that process. The beauty is\u2014they can also teach. My job is to assign who is going to be the teaching leader, so to speak, for the week. And then, whoever the spouse of the teaching leader\u2014they pray for the group. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, whoever taught\u2014they <em>end<\/em> the session in prayer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis past week, we\u2019re going through the New Testament. We\u2019re in the book of John now, and we\u2019re starting to go through that. We have a daily Bible\u2014a chronological daily Bible\u2014that we go through. It tells you how many days and what to read each day and so forth. Then, we get on the phone, talk about: \u201cWhat have you read?\u00a0 What have you learned?\u00a0 What truths have been shared?\u00a0 How do you apply this to your life?\u00a0 What challenges do you have in life, and what are you looking at?\u201d\u00a0 I tell you\u2014it\u2019s a <em>rich<\/em> moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Terence, as you were talking, I couldn\u2019t help but think how you\u2019re mirroring what Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica. Paul said to them\u2014he said, \u201cFor you know how like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.\u201d\u00a0 What Paul is saying here: \u201cI\u2019m <em>assuming<\/em> that the daddies are doing their duty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cthat they are encouraging, imploring, exhorting, and cheering on their kids as they make right choices.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think sometimes, Bob, as our kids grow up and become adults, we can underestimate the importance of just a good word from Mom \/ just a good word from Dad\u2014just to wrap your arms around a child over the phone or, maybe, it\u2019s a Skype call\u2014but to cheer them on as they do life, because they\u2019ve got a lot of challenges today in this generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You mention, Terence, that there was an aunt in your family who played a significant role, spiritually, in your own development; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>One section in our plan is genealogy. I never realized how powerful this section would be. In fact, I questioned it when I first put it in the planning process; because we know it\u2019s a personal relationship with the Lord\u2014it\u2019s not generational\u2014but I did want to understand our spiritual walk from a legacy and heritage standpoint. So, I went to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe is the keeper of genealogy in the family. I thought she just had a few documents\u2014she had <em>binders<\/em> of documents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She\u2019s the family historian. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>She\u2019s the family historian. She went back and shared with me documents back from 1824 about the spiritual legacy of our family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>I was in tears after reading them. What we saw was a very significant shift in our family when my great, great grandfather came to Christ. The <em>men<\/em> in the generations before him had not had a personal relationship with Christ, from her perspective. The reason we knew that is that in her Bible were the names of the men she was praying for and the recordings of testimonials that she had written down. That was the richest resource I have ever read\u2014except for those 66 books that I mentioned. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>As I read that, I looked at the history of these men\u2014the women had a personal relationship with Christ but not the men\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but when my great, great grandfather came to the Lord, we saw a <em>significant<\/em> shift in our family, spiritually. You know, so many things\u2014we probably don\u2019t have time to talk about today\u2014but boy, I realized that: \u201cWow! What a rich legacy here.\u201d\u00a0 I challenged the children that they were the sixth generation: \u201cDon\u2019t drop the baton.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also, certainly, don\u2019t want to give the impression that we are this spiritually-amazing family and doing all these amazing things. In fact, man, I fall short <em>daily<\/em>; but I believe that\u2019s why He gives us this idea of repentance at the cross daily. I\u2019m teaching our kids what repentance is and how to go to Him on a daily basis. It\u2019s not the decision that you\u2019re making, necessarily; it\u2019s where you are, when you\u2019re making that decision\u2014make it on the altar\u2014take it to Him\u2014He will lead, guide, and direct your path. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we\u2019ve given our listeners plenty to chew on today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20: <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d like to challenge you to get Terence\u2019s book, <em>Do Your Children Believe?;<\/em> because,\u00a0 in the back of it, there is a little project back here called a \u201cGenerational Spiritual Development Plan\u201d that, frankly, Terence, I think my be worth the price of the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s pretty simple\u2014but you just outline how a couple \/ a mom and a dad\u2014maybe, a single parent\u2014needs to sit down and evaluate what their vision is for their family, their mission, their values. When I say, \u201cvalues,\u201d I\u2019m talking about core values. Barbara and I did this as well. I would have to\u2014I hate to use the word in defining it\u2014but it was <em>invaluable<\/em> for Barbara and me to hammer out what our core beliefs were \/ our core values\u2014then, try to back it up by being intentional about teaching them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of us need help and encouragement going through life. I feel like you\u2019ve done this in your book, Terence. I\u2019m grateful to God for you, for the model your family is, and I pray that your legacy does continue on for six more generations beyond the six that were handed to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Terence: <\/strong>Well, thank you, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust very quickly\u2014you know, we just talked this last week. The number-one issue, when we teach this, is core value section. A man stood up\u2014he says: \u201cTerence, I realized I have values, but they are all secular in nature. My guiding principles are not really reflecting who I say I am.\u201d\u00a0 So, we started there before vision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to challenge and encourage everyone that the idea is: \u201cI don\u2019t want to see another generation go by who has, at least, not heard the name, Christ Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 For me, it\u2019s that Judges 2:10 moment\u2014that just one generation after Joshua died, an entire <em>nation<\/em> fell away from what they had been taught. Are we at that Judges 2:10 moment?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; it says, \u201cThey did not know God or practice His commandments.\u201d\u00a0 You look at our nation today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this is why this broadcast is so important for our country\u2014but also, most importantly, for the listeners\u2014to just encourage you to keep on keeping on and do your duty for the glory of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is that theme verse in the book of Judges, where it says, \u201cThere was no king in the land, and every man did what was right in his own eyes.\u201d\u00a0 And you look at our culture today and say, \u201cThat\u2019s the value system.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to create a culture where everybody does what seems right in their own eyes, and that is a path to destruction. That\u2019s not going to lead you toward godliness \/ it\u2019s not going to lead you toward life or light\u2014it\u2019s going to lead you toward destruction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would echo what you said, Dennis: \u201cWe are very grateful for the listeners, who are not just listeners, but an active part of this ministry.\u201d\u00a0 As you support the work of FamilyLife, you are making it possible for all that we\u2019re doing to reach more people.
