When we found Stephen and his wife and six kids, they had nowhere to go; and they were going to be homeless. We had heard about the family. The first thing we do is\u2014we reach out to a builder\u2014and this was in the Dallas area\u2014anyway, he raised his hand and said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m going to build this house for them\u201d; and he did. I\u2019ll never forget\u2014when we surprised the family, we showed them pictures of their new home; and he just broke down when he realized that he was going to have a home for his six kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, May 26<sup>th<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey. Thanks for joining us. Have you ever tackled a project and had it get out of hand on you?\u2014[Laughter]\u2014you know, you thought it was going to be one thing and it wound up being something else?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, if you\u2019re talking about construction, everything\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just talking about anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014everything I have ever attempted\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you bring up construction, I\u2019m thinking of a particular ceiling fan that, by the time I was done putting in that ceiling fan, there was more crown molding around the ceiling fan to cover the hole that I made in the ceiling than there was ceiling left in the room, I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, it\u2019s really interesting, Bob\u2014why God, in His sovereign rule, gave certain people talents and gifts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that I am envious of. [Laughter] And our guest on the broadcast today, Dan Wallrath, is one of the most-gifted builders you could ever imagine. I just want you to know, Dan\u2014see these hands, Dan?\u00a0 When I came on into ministry 48 years ago, the psychologist looked at me and said: \u201cYoung man, you\u2019ve chosen the right profession. You score in the lower 2 percentile of all the people in the world at working with your hands.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, you would not want to hire me for <em>anything<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014related to homebuilding, which you did for over 30 years. Somebody got all the gifts\u2014that\u2019s all I can say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDan is the President and Founder of Operation FINALLY HOME, a non-profit organization that provides custom-built, mortgage-free homes to military heroes and the widows of the fallen. He was named the CNN Hero of the Year in 2010\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014also featured in a CNN documentary. He and his wife Carol live in Texas, and they have two sons and four grandchildren. He\u2019s written a book called <em>Building Hope<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we should say\u2014Operation FINALLY HOME is kind of one of those projects that you took on that got out of hand; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Absolutely; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was\u2014at its beginning, it was a remodeling job; because you heard about a young man who was coming home. The home needed some renovation. You and other builders in the Houston area pitched in and made that happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you thought, \u201cWell, let\u2019s build a home for another soldier who is coming home and needs a home.\u201d\u00a0 You did that for a family and provided them with a home. A lot of people would look at that and say: \u201cYou know, I feel like I have done kind of my duty \/ I\u2019ve done my good deed for the day. Now, I can take that vacation,\u201d or \u201cI can get back to making some money.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not what happened with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What began as those two projects, all of a sudden, started morphing into a full-time call from God to keep at it; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>It did. It was something that was very unexpected, and I wasn\u2019t looking for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; at what point did it finally dawn on you?\u2014you\u2019re holding on the caboose of a runaway train. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Absolutely; I\u2019ve got to tell you this story. We had built a home right outside of Camp Lejeune. We had built this home for a family\u2014it was Sergeant Vincent Gizzarelli\u2014he had two teenage kids. Vince had served a couple tours and sustained some severe brain injuries and some TBI \/ PTSD. He came back home and tried to go to work and couldn\u2019t because of the severe headaches and things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe family was really struggling, financially. At the same time, his wife had a distant cousin\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she was into drugs, big time\u2014meth\u2014and her boyfriend. They had three little boys. They were so into drugs that they didn\u2019t bring these boys out. They were eating dog food \/ they were fending for themselves. They were living in such deplorable conditions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSocial services came in and took the three little boys away. Well, the closest relative they had were the Gizzarellis. The Gizzarellis were struggling, financially, and they asked them if they would consider taking one of these little boys. They said: \u201cThere is <em>no way<\/em> we that we would take one of them. We have to take all three of them\u2014we can\u2019t separate them.\u201d\u00a0 So, when they got the three little boys\u2014and this was big news in the local area\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And he didn\u2019t have a job at that point; right?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dan: <\/strong>No, no; he didn\u2019t\u2014no. He was already out of the military, and they were really struggling. We had heard about the family\u2014we had surprised them with a home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had made a statement at the dedication of the home that the Lord had called me to this work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter the ceremony was over, I stepped outside of the home there to use the telephone. When I turned back around, this guy was standing right there\u2014it scared me to death\u2014he was just standing right there. He looked at me and he said, \u201cGod <em>called<\/em> you to this work.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cHow did you know that?\u201d I told him\u2014I said, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know how God calls everybody.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cAll I can do is tell you how He called <em>me<\/em>. He put a passion and a desire in my heart that\u2014you know, I couldn\u2019t sleep \/ couldn\u2019t eat\u2014you know, I <em>had<\/em> to do something. And I felt like\u201d\u2014and I told him \/ I said, \u201cDon\u2019t take this the wrong way; but I felt like that if I didn\u2019t do this, God was through with me.\u201d\u00a0 I told him: \u201cDon\u2019t\u2014don\u2019t get me wrong. I don\u2019t think that God was going to zap me and end my life; but I just felt like I had to do this. If I didn\u2019t do this, that God just wasn\u2019t going to ever ask me to do anything again; you know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI had to do it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I like to ask this question: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 And it doesn\u2019t have to be what you\u2019re currently doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. It\u2019s what those soldiers did, who were put in harm\u2019s way, and some of them harmed because they were doing their duty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>What these guys do\u2014what they face on a battlefield\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I understand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>\u2014is just\u2014it\u2019s <em>incredible<\/em>. And for me, to even think of being courageous is just\u2014it just sort of\u2014you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know if this is courageous or not; but I think the biggest step\u2014or the biggest <em>blessing<\/em> in my life has been my wife Carol\u2014and having courage to just pursue her and just <em>know<\/em> that she was the one in my life. I have to say that I don\u2019t think I\u2019d be where I am today without having the courage to\u2014because she told me, \u201cNo,\u201d the first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cNo,\u201d when I asked her out\u2014she said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m just so thankful that God gave me the courage to hang in there\u2014pursue her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and we should say\u2014because you\u2019ve told us this\u2014the courage involved going through a big ex-Marine, Baptist preacher father\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to get to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, it wasn\u2019t just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>He had his own military experience. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was back in 1970. So, it\u2019s worked out; hasn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>It has; it has. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You ended up meeting the Savior because the dad said: \u201cIf you want to pursue my daughter, you\u2019ve got to pursue God. You\u2019ve got to be at church\u2014not just any church\u2014it\u2019s the church I\u2019m preaching at.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dan: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, he checked you out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>He did.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, we all know\u2014and have watched television on some of these remodel shows. I love the one that has the painting of what the house used to look like, and it\u2019s on rollers; you know?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They roll it back with the couple in front, and there\u2019s the new house with the landscaping and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, the cameras are all over the faces of the couple who are getting that house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to believe, Dan\u2014that as good as that is\u2014I have to believe you have some memories etched in your soul. Take us to one of these moments when you built a house and set it up, and let us know who the couple is. Explain what you saw and what happened afterward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Number one, there are <em>so<\/em> many\u2014it\u2019s incredible. It\u2019s really sad that there are so many stories; but the one that just comes to my mind\u2014Sergeant Stephen Jackel. We found Stephen and his wife and six kids\u2014they were in the San Antonio area\u2014and they were living in some transitional temporary housing. Stephen was a double amputee\u2014he lost both his legs in an IED explosion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they ran over the IED, it trapped Stephen and his crew inside the vehicle; and the vehicle was on fire. Stephen took one of his legs and put the fire out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>So, you can\u2014when you ask me about courage\u2014those guys are pretty courageous. But Stephen put the fire out and was able to save his men. One of our heroes\u2014he\u2019s living in transitional housing with his wife and six kids. And the transition housing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give us an idea what you mean by that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Well, there\u2019s a group in the San Antonio area. They have transitional housing that provides temporary housing for the families that come out of the military that are transitioning into civilian life. It\u2019s a <em>great<\/em> service, but they can only provide that housing for a certain period of time\u2014it\u2019s temporary, and they have to move on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, when we found Stephen and his wife and six kids, they were at the end of their time; and they were going to have to leave. They had nowhere to go, and they were going to be homeless. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur program\u2014the way our program works is\u2014we\u2014first thing we do is\u2014we reach out to a builder in the\u2014and this was in the Dallas area\u2014and it was one of our friends. We told him about the Jackels. He raised his hand and said, \u201cYes; I will build this house for them\u201d; and he did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget\u2014when we surprised the family at Fair Park in Dallas\u2014and Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn\u2014he was doing a concert at the fairgrounds. We worked it out to where we were going to surprise the family at that venue, and they had no clue. We told him it would be sort of a neat thing to take them backstage and meet some of the artists and things. So, they did; and we surprised them on stage, there, in front of several thousand people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and we showed them a picture of their new home. He just\u2014he just broke down\u2014you know, just such an emotional time when he realized that he was going to have a home for his six kids. It was just wonderful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell our listeners about Marine Sergeant Scott Worswick. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell his story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>This is\u2014of course, there are so many stories like this in the book; and they go into a lot more detail. But when we first started, we were invited\u2014my wife and I were invited down to Disney World to a conference around Christmastime for wounded veterans. We were invited down there because we were looking for a family that we could build a home for in the Houston area. This was very, very early on. We didn\u2019t know what we were doing. We didn\u2019t know how to find anybody, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t even have a name for your organization. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>No; no. [Laughter] We didn\u2019t even have a piece of paper that said, \u201cYou can give us money, and we can give you a receipt.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore we went, my wife and I prayed that God would place a family in our path that we could help. So, we go to the conference. There\u2019s just\u2014oh\u2014hundreds of young men and women there that are injured\u2014single, double, triple amputees\u2014blind, in wheelchairs. And we\u2019re visiting with different ones: \u201cWhere do you live?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe live in Phoenix.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe live in Tampa.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe live here.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe live there.\u201d\u00a0 But nobody we\u2019d run into that needed to be in Houston. Of course, novices like we were, we didn\u2019t know what we were doing. So, we were\u2014and we were very discouraged because we just <em>knew<\/em>\u2014<em>we knew<\/em>\u2014that God had sent us there, because we <em>knew<\/em> that we were going to find a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this was the last day; and my wife and I decided we were going to run over to Disney World, pick up some Christmas gifts for the kids. We get on the bus \/ we go to Disney World; and on the way back, Carol and I were the only two on the bus. We were leaving the bus stop and, all of a sudden, the bus comes to a screeching halt. I look out the window, and here comes this family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014this young man with a cane, and an infant, and a little two-year-old. They had diaper bags and, you know, strollers. It looked like a circus; you know?\u2014things were just flying everywhere. They were trying to get on the bus. I jump out\u2014help them get on the bus. They decided they\u2019d come sit down by my wife and me. They did, and we struck up a conversation and introduced ourselves. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said\u2014I asked him if he was there for the conference\u2014he said he was. I asked him about his injuries. You know, he was on part of the rescue mission for Jessica Lynch. He had been injured, like so many of them, by an IED. He had\u2014I don\u2019t know\u201423 or 24 back surgeries and had more to come and was going to end up, probably, in a wheelchair. He was probably 25\/26 years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We got to talking, and I asked him\u2014I said, \u201cWell, where you all live?\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cWell, we live here in Orlando, <em>but<\/em> we feel like that there\u2019re more opportunities for us in Houston, Texas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe\u2019d love to go.\u201d\u00a0 Well, you know, I looked at my wife real quick\u2014Carol\u2014and she looked at me. I mean, you could have knocked us over with a feather; you know. Of course, we didn\u2019t know anything about how to vet families or ask them the right questions or anything; but we just <em>knew<\/em>\u2014God just put them there, right at the right time\u2014last minute. Again, He showed us that He was in control. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, on the bus, did you say, \u201cSo, would you like a house?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>No; no\u2014because we surprise all of them\u2014they don\u2019t know it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Got it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>But we told them what we did, and we asked them if they would fill out an application for a new home. I told them\u2014I said, \u201cYou know, it probably won\u2019t happen; but you know maybe. Would they consider filling out an application?\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cOh my goodness\u2014yes!\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, don\u2019t get your hopes up.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How many other applications did you have?\u00a0 [Laughter] Come on, tell the truth. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>They were getting a home. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, they did\u2014they filled out the application. They had moved to Houston, and we surprised them with a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014now, it\u2019s been\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How do you surprise somebody?\u00a0 Do you show up at their house like Ed McMahon with the check?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>No; we\u2019ve given away homes at a Washington Wizards\u2019 game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Basketball game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes; Houston Texans\u2019 games, Dallas Mavericks, churches\u2014we\u2019ve done them at rotary clubs. We\u2019ve done them at\u2014wherever we can get a group of people together, we\u2019ll surprise the family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Make a surprise announcement there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>We\u2019ve done them at Aggie games \/ UT games\u2014it\u2019s always fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re either in process or have built over 200 homes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What if there\u2019s a guy or a gal, who is a homebuilder, listening to our broadcast\u2014I\u2019ve got to believe there is one\u2014[Laughter]\u2014there is one, who is going, \u201cI\u2019d like a piece of that action.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes; yes. Well, that\u2019s how we work. I was a builder; and our process is very, very simple. We ask the builder to just raise his hand and say, \u201cHey, I\u2019d like to get involved.\u201d\u00a0 We start with the builder first. Then, we find a family; because we want to make sure we\u2019re going to be able to build a home before we surprise a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe always know that we\u2019re going to get the home built before you bring a family into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we go through our process. Our process is\u2014we\u2014first thing we do is\u2014we have what we call a town hall meeting. We invite the builders to invite all his subcontractors, suppliers, bankers, developers into a meeting. One of our representatives comes, and we do a PowerPoint, or a slideshow, or whatever on the family. We\u2019ll show them what their service has been, what his injuries are, what they\u2019ve sacrificed, the struggles they\u2019re going through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the builder gets up and says: \u201cHey, I\u2019ve raised my hand. I am going to build the home for this. I <em>need<\/em> you guys\u2019 help.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we have sign-up cards: An electrician comes up and says, \u201cHey, I\u2019m going to wire it.\u201d\u00a0 Plumber says, \u201cI\u2019m going to do the plumbing.\u201d\u00a0 The air conditioning man says, \u201cI\u2019m going to do this.\u201d\u00a0 Then, off of that information, the builder does a budget. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay. Time out!\u00a0 Time out!\u00a0 Take me to your favorite moment at one of these builders\u2019 meetings. We tend to focus on the family that gets the home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have had to have witnessed some remarkable moments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>One situation was another amazing God story; but this builder\u2014actually, he dated my sister when she was in college. I hadn\u2019t heard from him in years and years and years. I went and visited with him, and told him how the process worked, and told him about the town hall meeting. Before I got through with the discussion with him about the town hall meeting, he said, \u201cWe want to do the town hall, but\u201d\u2014he said\u2014\u201cI want you to know something right up front.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThis is a done deal.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf nobody signs up, I\u2019m building this house. I\u2019m building it.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just <em>so<\/em> amazing. We see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It sounds like what Dan Wallrath said back the first time somebody came to him. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Same deal; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>God puts a burden on these guys\u2019 hearts. Then, from all over the place\u2014sub-contractors, bankers, suppliers\u2014people raise their hand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said there was one house that got built\u2014a $200,000 home\u2014and there was a total of about $6,000 worth of raw materials that had to be paid for. Everything else got pitched in; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Yes; that was the very first home\u2014it cost me $6,000. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, today, if a home is being built, are they typically 2,000-square foot homes that you\u2019re building?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>The homes that we\u2019ve built today\u2014they have a market value of\u2014from New York to California\u2014and most of them are in the middle of America\u2014is where we build most of them. The average market value of our homes is $264,000. We do not tell the builder what to build, or how to build it, or anything. They\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>No; we do a family assessment\u2019s need. We say that: \u201cThis family has four kids. This is his injuries. This is his hobbies \/ this is what they like to do. Then, the builder comes up with a plan; and we approve it. We want to make sure it has all the safety things and handicap things it needs; but when it comes to how much granite or how much wood floors\u2014all of them are like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the average value of that home is $264,000. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe money we have to raise to build one of those homes is between 60 and 70 thousand; and we have so many generous donors. We have families that\u2014they sponsor a home a year\u2014they\u2019ll give $75,000. We have one family that sponsors four homes a year. We have families that give $1,000 a year. We have families that give $5 a month. God provides\u2014the money is always there!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not about building homes\u2014we\u2019re about building lives; you know?\u00a0 We don\u2019t just build them a home and just say, \u201cGoodbye.\u201d\u00a0 You know, we stick with them; and we provide them a chaplain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you know the needs\u2014the spiritual needs\u2014of those marriages and families are acute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dan: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, war extracts a price on those who are injured and those who are not injured in combat\u2014just serving is disruptive to a family unit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d encourage our listeners\u2014pray for Dan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Pray for Operation FINALLY HOME.
