Thanks for joining us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When you were in high school, did you ever have any memorable experiments in your chemistry class or\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chemistry experiments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you don\u2019t really take biology in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I took biology! I remember dissecting\u2014we dissected a fish. It was a perch, and we named him Lurch the Perch. [Laughter] We dissected him. I remember dissecting Lurch. Chemistry\u2014I don\u2019t remember\u2014I remember getting a \u201cC.\u201d That\u2019s all I remember about chemistry. I did not do particularly well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So that wasn\u2019t your thing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was not memorable, but you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I had some experiments that kind of\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You got combustible in chemistry; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014bordered on dangerous! [Laughter] I\u2019m not going to get into that now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about a memorable experiment for a woman\u2014specifically, a wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSara Horn joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> Welcome to the broadcast, Sara.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Thanks for having me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You really did have an interesting experiment; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019re sure you want to go here on this?\u2014talk about combustible! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This could be really combustible!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This could be, but we\u2019re going to bring respectability to the subject. I think we need to talk about this subject with dignity\/encouragement\u2014it\u2019s a sacred subject. It\u2019s all over the Scriptures; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just tell them who Sara is. She is married to Cliff\u2014has been for 16 years\u2014he\u2019s in the military. She\u2019s a military wife, mom, and author\u2014runs a ministry called Wives of Faith, which is a ministry to military wives all across the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Share with our listeners a little bit about what you try to do there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> We try to encourage, support, and connect military wives and really point them to Jesus and help them grow in their relationships to Christ. We offer different ministries\u2014whether it\u2019s prayer; whether it\u2019s \u201cSurvival Sisters,\u201d which is a mentoring ministry where we pair military wives together; as well as online Bible studies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; alright. You\u2019ve written a book called <em>My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife<\/em>\u2014and woman; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes, as a Proverbs 31 wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019m not going to tell them the name of this book. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the newer book that she wrote? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to tell them the title of the <em>newer<\/em> book. I just want you to tell them about your experiment and what led you to go on this one-year experiment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> The <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experiment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014or the other experiment?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The other one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Ohhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This one right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Okay; well, after going through the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experiment\u2014and I call them experiments because they sound a little less dangerous\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know about my experiment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It involved sodium and water.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s dangerous. [Laughter and explosion noises]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> And, Bob, I wasn\u2019t very good in chemistry either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I was right there with you with the \u201cC.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I had gone through the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experiment, and had taken a year to look at what it meant to be a Proverbs 31 wife\u2014applied some of those principles we find in that passage. God just really taught me some deep, deep lessons about myself and about my marriage. So, He kind of brought me to this next point where I was, I guess you could say, a little bit more ready to take this on. So, for a year, I decided to look at this whole idea of biblical submission and what that looks like in a marriage today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so describe for me who you were before you did either of these experiments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What kind of wife were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I was very opinionated \/ very assertive. I am an ambitious person to begin with\u2014I\u2019m very Type A. My husband Cliff is a sweetheart\u2014he\u2019s very Type B. So I was often the one that was kind of calling the shots. He would say, \u201cSure dear; whatever you want.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just sort of went along; and yet, at the same time, I was stressed\u2014I was constantly just battling things, and juggling things, and just not always happy within myself. As I started to go through these year-long experiences and really apply these things, God really started to change some things within me, as a wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to stop you because I want to ask you\u2014back to Bob\u2019s question: \u201cOn a 1-10 point scale, how would you have rated your marriage before both of these experiments?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> It\u2019s always been a good marriage. I would say it was probably a 7 or an 8.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; and now that you\u2019ve performed both of these experiments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I\u2019d say it\u2019s a 9\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s <em>perfect<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014but I would say we are as close as we\u2019ve ever been.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But your motivation to go through Proverbs 31 and try to flesh that out was not because you were trying to fix something that felt really broken in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Not really; no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was more about finding out what more God had for me, as a wife and as a mom, in my family; because, for so long, I looked at the role of being a wife and being a mom as not necessarily as important as what I did <em>outside<\/em> the home. I had a ministry\u2014I wrote about things that God was doing in the lives of other people\u2014and that is where I always saw my value. It wasn\u2019t until I started going through these experiments where I realized\u2014these experiences\u2014where I realized there is great value in my role as a wife and as a mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019d been married more than a decade when you went through\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the first experiment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tD<strong>ennis:<\/strong> Fourteen or fifteen years of marriage\u2014you decide to kind of pull out the stops and say, \u201cI\u2019m going to take a one-year focus on what it means to be a wife who really exploits what God had in mind when he called her to submit to her husband.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you chafe against that whole concept?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. Those were parts of the Bible I ignored\u2014I didn\u2019t want to think about it. I think a lot of women\u2014we tend to overlook those passages. Yet, after I\u2019d gone through this Proverbs 31 experience, I knew those passages were there. I knew they were there for a reason. If I recognized the Bible as my sole authority, which I do, and how God uses that to teach me and to grow me, then I knew I needed to take a look at these passages and really be more intentional in applying them and seeing what that looked like today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So did you tell Cliff? Did you say, \u201cI\u2019m going to spend a year being submissive\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, you actually\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you told him what you were going to do before you did it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. I asked him\u2014you know, as a submissive wife, I\u2019ve got to ask my husband; right? You know what his answer was? I said: \u201cWhat do you think about me applying biblical submission for a year? What do you think?\u201d He said, \u201cNo; don\u2019t do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I thought he was going to say, \u201cSure, bring me my sweet tea and slippers\u201d; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> But he said: \u201cThat\u2019s not us. We\u2019re a team \/ we\u2019re a partnership\u2014we do everything 50\/50 together. That\u2019s not you \/ that\u2019s not me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I kind of had to pause. I was really surprised. We took a look at it for the next day or so. He kind of looked at those passages. I think he found something, online, that a woman had written talking about the biblical submission passage. He said: \u201cYou know? Okay; if you want to give it a shot, we\u2019ll try it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, Sara, you know there\u2019s a generation of young ladies coming off the college and university campus today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who have heard the company line\u2014the PC company line\u2014that says: \u201cYou know what? You don\u2019t need a marriage where you\u2019ve got anybody who\u2019s got a role. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s just purely 50\/50.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re writing a book, now, that is flying in the face of what the culture is promoting\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and, really, indoctrinating a generation of young ladies with today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes; very much so. I get two different reactions from women when they hear about this book. First of all, this is not a how-to\u2014this is just my story and what happened during that year\u2014because I think every marriage is different. Every wife is going to come to this from a different place \/ from maybe a different perspective. It may be a process for them to get there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I have two different reactions\u2014the first reaction from women is usually, \u201cMore power to you, but I could never do that.\u201d Then, the second one that I\u2019ve gotten from women is, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m not sure if I could do it; but I\u2019d really like to try.\u201d I sense a growing desire from so many women who have bought the PC line\u2014who have tried applying what the culture says we should do, as wives\u2014and it\u2019s not working. They\u2019re struggling, and it isn\u2019t going the way they thought. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey look at this, and they say: \u201cYou know what? Maybe there is something to this,\u201d just like I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you said your 50\/50 teammate marriage was working okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> It was okay, but it wasn\u2019t\u2014there were still bumps in the road. For me, personally, it was because I was so consumed, I guess, with what I was doing outside the home \/ what I was doing outside my marriage and our family. I really felt like I needed to just come back to basics and really look at the role that God had for me, as a wife and as a mom\u2014that\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You not only told your husband that you intended to spend a year as a submissive wife, but you were living with your in-laws at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> We were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You told your mother-in-law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And how did that go over?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Well, she listened; and she said, \u201cOkay,\u201d\u2014I kind of wanted more of a reaction from her. \u201cWell, do you think this is a good idea?\u201d She kind of looked at me, and in a very sweet but honest way, she said, \u201cI\u2019ve known you a long time, and submissive is not one word I would think of when I think about you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was a very interesting process getting started with this because, with the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife<\/em> experience, you kind of have that list of all of those things that she does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> But what does it look like to be submissive today? You have those verses in Ephesians 5, and 1 Peter 3, and Colossians; but they say, \u201cWives, be submissive to your husbands as is fitting to the Lord,\u201d but what does that look like? So, I kind of had to walk through that, and Cliff did too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what would you say is the biggest misconception young women today have about submission when it comes to their marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSweet tea and slippers\u201d\u2014it sounds like to me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes! Well, you think you\u2019re going to be a doormat. You think you\u2019re going to be a Stepford wife \/ you\u2019re going to check your brain at the door\u2014you don\u2019t have any say \/ you <em>can\u2019t<\/em> say anything\u2014you step back like you\u2019re a servant of some sort. That\u2019s not what it is at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomething that I learned from the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experience that really, truly went into this year as well, is that we, as women and as wives, are such profound influences\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014such profound influences to our husbands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Powerful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> It\u2019s <em>enormously<\/em> powerful, and I think we don\u2019t recognize that. We are so conditioned today that we need to stand up for our rights and to lead as we see that we miss seeing that whole idea of being that influence and what that looks like. It\u2019s less about being a doormat or being walked all over\u2014it\u2019s more about really leaning into this role of influence that God has called us to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It sounds like both your husband and your mother-in-law were thinking: \u201cThis is going to require a complete altering of your personality. You\u2019re going to have to become a different woman in order to become submissive.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes; I think that was\u2014you know, even my mom, when I told her, she kind of laughed pretty hard, I think, [Laughter] and said, \u201cOkay; Sara!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cGood luck!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you concerned that this was going to turn you into some mealy-mouthed woman that you\u2019re not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I was a little nervous about it, thinking, \u201cOkay; am I going to have to keep my mouth shut more times than I really want to?\u201d But honestly, I was approaching this from a question. You know, when you start an experiment, you have a hypothesis and you have observations you want to make. I really came into this, saying: \u201cOkay, God; what do <em>You<\/em> want to teach me about this whole idea of biblical submission in my marriage? What do <em>You<\/em> want to teach me about my role as a wife?\u201d and \u201cHow can I grow in this?\u201d That was primarily my motivation for doing this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, usually, when we make an experiment like this\u2014and we kind of put it out there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014God soon delivers a test where He really challenges the hypothesis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was there a\u2014I\u2019m not talking about a minor deal\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014I\u2019m talking about one where it was, \u201cGulp!\u201d and you go, \u201cOkay; it\u2019s game on, and this is my assignment\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Well, there was a test toward the very beginning of the experiment\u2014I failed it miserably. As we got into this experiment and, you know, we were kind of going through the days, I was trying to find my way\u2014feel my way around\u2014what this looked like. We were living with my in-laws\u2014my husband had just gotten back from a deployment. We were kind of resettling, if you will, and figuring out what we were going to do next.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs much as I love my in-laws, I really was looking forward to our own house again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband had just, you know, been hired\u2014had a job with the state. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were slowly starting to work on that, but it wasn\u2019t happening quite fast enough for me. So, I found a part-time job that I had heard about\u2014I interviewed for. All of a sudden, I realized I hadn\u2019t said a word to my husband about it\u2014not asked him what he thought. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Whoa!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes; and I think I was traveling at the time. Yes! Big, big: \u201cWhoa!\u201d [Laughter] Big: \u201cOops! [Laughter] Whoops!\u201d\u2014not very biblically submissive. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So how did you brooch that subject with him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Well, I hadn\u2019t even thought about it. I think I was on the phone with him\u2014I was traveling\u2014I said, \u201cOh, by the way, I\u2019ve got this interview.\u201d He said: \u201cWait; what?! What is this about?\u201d So I said: \u201cOh! Whoops! I forgot to tell you about that.\u201d We talked about it. I was so far into that process already that he kind of shrugged his shoulders and said, \u201cOkay; Sara, if that\u2019s what you want to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut you are already doing all of these other things.\u201d So, I went ahead with it\u2014I took on a part-time job. Probably two weeks into it, I realized what a mistake I had made.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you long for Cliff to say, \u201cYou know, Sara, I\u2019d really like you to reconsider this\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> At the time, I probably was a little resistant to that. At the time, I was still kind of in my way of thinking: \u201cI can handle this. I know better. I can do this.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until I\u2019d kind of gotten through that whole first mistake that I realized, \u201cYou know, there\u2019s something to be said for coming to your husband and having a chat about something before you jump into it.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014and likewise for him too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have to give you a chance to tell a story that talks about when you got it right and you thought: \u201cI\u2019ve got it! This really works! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is really healthy for us. This is good for our marriage, and it\u2019s good for Cliff.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes. Well, one of the things that comes to mind is something I had always wanted my husband to do\u2014was family devotions. It was just kind of hard to get him to do that. It just wasn\u2019t on his heart\u2014not that he was against it\u2014he just hadn\u2019t really done it. I don\u2019t think they had done it, as a family, growing up. I\u2019d always wanted him to do it, and I never wanted to be the one to initiate it\u2014I wanted him to. For a long time, we just kind of went back and forth and never did family devotions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI might have to tell a little bit of a mistake and then what I learned from it. So, at the bookstore one day, I had found this devotional book that we could do with our son\u2014 that was appropriate for his age, at the time. I thought: \u201cYou know, maybe I should call him and see what he thinks. No, I\u2019ll just buy it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ll take it home and lay it out somewhere. Maybe he\u2019ll pick it up and have this sudden motivation to lead our family devotion.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got home that day, and I was so excited about it! He just happened to call me as I walked in\u2014I mentioned it to him. He kind of paused and said, \u201cOkay; why didn\u2019t you call me and ask what I might want to do?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, because I thought you might not want to do it.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, then why didn\u2019t you call me?\u201d [Laughter] We kind of went round and round. We actually ended up laughing about it, because it was so silly. The devotional sat there on the desk in the kitchen for months and was not picked up until one day he came in, and picked it up, and said, \u201cHey, would you like to do a devotional tonight?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, something that I started learning\u2014I got right, later\u2014was probably two or three weeks into it. We\u2019d been doing it [devotional] once a week. We were supposed to do it\u2014it was a Sunday night, and we were going to do it at a certain time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI noticed the time, and I noticed that he was still in our little game room. We were in our house by that point\u2014he was playing a video game with our son. I was kind of watching the time; and I was thinking, \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be our devotional time.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went into the game room and I said: \u201cDid you notice the time? Are we going to do the family devotion?\u201d I was trying to be as nice and sweet as possible. He said, \u201cYeah, yeah, yeah.\u201d I went into the living room, and I was sitting there. I read my book or whatever I was doing. About 15 minutes later, my husband and my son came in; and we did our family devotion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater that night, before we got ready for bed, Cliff kind of nudged me\u2014he said, \u201cI saw what you did there today.\u201d I said: \u201cReally? What?!\u201d He said: \u201cYou didn\u2019t nag me. You didn\u2019t harp on the fact that I was late starting our family devotion. You just let me decide when we were going to do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was one little example of what I kind of started to learn. You know, there is so much good that can happen when you step back just a little bit and let your husband have the room to lead, and to lead in his way, and to lead with his personality and his traits instead of trying to tell him how you think he should lead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think there are a lot of men, who are listening right now, who are saying, \u201cYou know, if she wants to lead, I\u2019ll just let her take over.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They get weary of competing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think the easiest thing for them to do is lead in the marketplace\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and come home and vegetate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and just become passive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is a wise woman, who can pick up a book like this\u2014maybe begin their own secret\u2014I might say [whispering]: \u201cDon\u2019t tell him. Don\u2019t tell him you\u2019re going to do this. Don\u2019t tell your mother-in-law either!\u201d [Laughter] [Normal voice]: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJust do this experiment of saying: \u2018I\u2019m going to empower him. I\u2019m going to surprise him with how I empower him to be the man and to lead in our marriage \/ our family.\u2019 Just sit back and smile and see how God uses you, because a woman is never more powerful than when she is operating according to God\u2019s design.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There may be some husbands listening, who are going [heavy country accent]: \u201cWhere do I get me one of them there books you\u2019re talking about? [Laughter] I wanna get my wife a copy of <em>My So-Called Life as a Submissive Wife<\/em>! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What goes around comes around!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m going to put it on her pillow tonight!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Put it right there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t think that\u2019s a good idea?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I highly discourage that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let her pick it up for herself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we do have copies of Sara\u2019s book in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center. Thanks for joining us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When you were in high school, did you ever have any memorable experiments in your chemistry class or\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Chemistry experiments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you don\u2019t really take biology in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I took biology! I remember dissecting\u2014we dissected a fish. It was a perch, and we named him Lurch the Perch. [Laughter] We dissected him. I remember dissecting Lurch. Chemistry\u2014I don\u2019t remember\u2014I remember getting a \u201cC.\u201d That\u2019s all I remember about chemistry. I did not do particularly well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So that wasn\u2019t your thing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was not memorable, but you\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I had some experiments that kind of\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You got combustible in chemistry; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014bordered on dangerous! [Laughter] I\u2019m not going to get into that now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about a memorable experiment for a woman\u2014specifically, a wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSara Horn joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> Welcome to the broadcast, Sara.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Thanks for having me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You really did have an interesting experiment; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you\u2019re sure you want to go here on this?\u2014talk about combustible! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This could be really combustible!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This could be, but we\u2019re going to bring respectability to the subject. I think we need to talk about this subject with dignity\/encouragement\u2014it\u2019s a sacred subject. It\u2019s all over the Scriptures; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just tell them who Sara is. She is married to Cliff\u2014has been for 16 years\u2014he\u2019s in the military. She\u2019s a military wife, mom, and author\u2014runs a ministry called Wives of Faith, which is a ministry to military wives all across the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Share with our listeners a little bit about what you try to do there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> We try to encourage, support, and connect military wives and really point them to Jesus and help them grow in their relationships to Christ. We offer different ministries\u2014whether it\u2019s prayer; whether it\u2019s \u201cSurvival Sisters,\u201d which is a mentoring ministry where we pair military wives together; as well as online Bible studies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; alright. You\u2019ve written a book called <em>My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife<\/em>\u2014and woman; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes, as a Proverbs 31 wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019m not going to tell them the name of this book. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the newer book that she wrote? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to tell them the title of the <em>newer<\/em> book. I just want you to tell them about your experiment and what led you to go on this one-year experiment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> The <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experiment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014or the other experiment?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The other one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Ohhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This one right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Okay; well, after going through the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experiment\u2014and I call them experiments because they sound a little less dangerous\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You don\u2019t know about my experiment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It involved sodium and water.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s dangerous. [Laughter and explosion noises]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> And, Bob, I wasn\u2019t very good in chemistry either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I was right there with you with the \u201cC.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I had gone through the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experiment, and had taken a year to look at what it meant to be a Proverbs 31 wife\u2014applied some of those principles we find in that passage. God just really taught me some deep, deep lessons about myself and about my marriage. So, He kind of brought me to this next point where I was, I guess you could say, a little bit more ready to take this on. So, for a year, I decided to look at this whole idea of biblical submission and what that looks like in a marriage today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so describe for me who you were before you did either of these experiments.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What kind of wife were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I was very opinionated \/ very assertive. I am an ambitious person to begin with\u2014I\u2019m very Type A. My husband Cliff is a sweetheart\u2014he\u2019s very Type B. So I was often the one that was kind of calling the shots. He would say, \u201cSure dear; whatever you want.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just sort of went along; and yet, at the same time, I was stressed\u2014I was constantly just battling things, and juggling things, and just not always happy within myself. As I started to go through these year-long experiences and really apply these things, God really started to change some things within me, as a wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to stop you because I want to ask you\u2014back to Bob\u2019s question: \u201cOn a 1-10 point scale, how would you have rated your marriage before both of these experiments?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> It\u2019s always been a good marriage. I would say it was probably a 7 or an 8.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; and now that you\u2019ve performed both of these experiments?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I\u2019d say it\u2019s a 9\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s <em>perfect<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014but I would say we are as close as we\u2019ve ever been.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But your motivation to go through Proverbs 31 and try to flesh that out was not because you were trying to fix something that felt really broken in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Not really; no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was more about finding out what more God had for me, as a wife and as a mom, in my family; because, for so long, I looked at the role of being a wife and being a mom as not necessarily as important as what I did <em>outside<\/em> the home. I had a ministry\u2014I wrote about things that God was doing in the lives of other people\u2014and that is where I always saw my value. It wasn\u2019t until I started going through these experiments where I realized\u2014these experiences\u2014where I realized there is great value in my role as a wife and as a mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019d been married more than a decade when you went through\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014the first experiment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tD<strong>ennis:<\/strong> Fourteen or fifteen years of marriage\u2014you decide to kind of pull out the stops and say, \u201cI\u2019m going to take a one-year focus on what it means to be a wife who really exploits what God had in mind when he called her to submit to her husband.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you chafe against that whole concept?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. Those were parts of the Bible I ignored\u2014I didn\u2019t want to think about it. I think a lot of women\u2014we tend to overlook those passages. Yet, after I\u2019d gone through this Proverbs 31 experience, I knew those passages were there. I knew they were there for a reason. If I recognized the Bible as my sole authority, which I do, and how God uses that to teach me and to grow me, then I knew I needed to take a look at these passages and really be more intentional in applying them and seeing what that looked like today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So did you tell Cliff? Did you say, \u201cI\u2019m going to spend a year being submissive\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, you actually\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014you told him what you were going to do before you did it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did. I asked him\u2014you know, as a submissive wife, I\u2019ve got to ask my husband; right? You know what his answer was? I said: \u201cWhat do you think about me applying biblical submission for a year? What do you think?\u201d He said, \u201cNo; don\u2019t do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I thought he was going to say, \u201cSure, bring me my sweet tea and slippers\u201d; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> But he said: \u201cThat\u2019s not us. We\u2019re a team \/ we\u2019re a partnership\u2014we do everything 50\/50 together. That\u2019s not you \/ that\u2019s not me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I kind of had to pause. I was really surprised. We took a look at it for the next day or so. He kind of looked at those passages. I think he found something, online, that a woman had written talking about the biblical submission passage. He said: \u201cYou know? Okay; if you want to give it a shot, we\u2019ll try it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, Sara, you know there\u2019s a generation of young ladies coming off the college and university campus today\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014who have heard the company line\u2014the PC company line\u2014that says: \u201cYou know what? You don\u2019t need a marriage where you\u2019ve got anybody who\u2019s got a role. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s just purely 50\/50.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re writing a book, now, that is flying in the face of what the culture is promoting\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and, really, indoctrinating a generation of young ladies with today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes; very much so. I get two different reactions from women when they hear about this book. First of all, this is not a how-to\u2014this is just my story and what happened during that year\u2014because I think every marriage is different. Every wife is going to come to this from a different place \/ from maybe a different perspective. It may be a process for them to get there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I have two different reactions\u2014the first reaction from women is usually, \u201cMore power to you, but I could never do that.\u201d Then, the second one that I\u2019ve gotten from women is, \u201cYou know, I\u2019m not sure if I could do it; but I\u2019d really like to try.\u201d I sense a growing desire from so many women who have bought the PC line\u2014who have tried applying what the culture says we should do, as wives\u2014and it\u2019s not working. They\u2019re struggling, and it isn\u2019t going the way they thought. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey look at this, and they say: \u201cYou know what? Maybe there is something to this,\u201d just like I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you said your 50\/50 teammate marriage was working okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> It was okay, but it wasn\u2019t\u2014there were still bumps in the road. For me, personally, it was because I was so consumed, I guess, with what I was doing outside the home \/ what I was doing outside my marriage and our family. I really felt like I needed to just come back to basics and really look at the role that God had for me, as a wife and as a mom\u2014that\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You not only told your husband that you intended to spend a year as a submissive wife, but you were living with your in-laws at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> We were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You told your mother-in-law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And how did that go over?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Well, she listened; and she said, \u201cOkay,\u201d\u2014I kind of wanted more of a reaction from her. \u201cWell, do you think this is a good idea?\u201d She kind of looked at me, and in a very sweet but honest way, she said, \u201cI\u2019ve known you a long time, and submissive is not one word I would think of when I think about you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was a very interesting process getting started with this because, with the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife<\/em> experience, you kind of have that list of all of those things that she does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> But what does it look like to be submissive today? You have those verses in Ephesians 5, and 1 Peter 3, and Colossians; but they say, \u201cWives, be submissive to your husbands as is fitting to the Lord,\u201d but what does that look like? So, I kind of had to walk through that, and Cliff did too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what would you say is the biggest misconception young women today have about submission when it comes to their marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cSweet tea and slippers\u201d\u2014it sounds like to me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes! Well, you think you\u2019re going to be a doormat. You think you\u2019re going to be a Stepford wife \/ you\u2019re going to check your brain at the door\u2014you don\u2019t have any say \/ you <em>can\u2019t<\/em> say anything\u2014you step back like you\u2019re a servant of some sort. That\u2019s not what it is at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomething that I learned from the <em>Proverbs 31 Wife <\/em>experience that really, truly went into this year as well, is that we, as women and as wives, are such profound influences\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014such profound influences to our husbands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Powerful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> It\u2019s <em>enormously<\/em> powerful, and I think we don\u2019t recognize that. We are so conditioned today that we need to stand up for our rights and to lead as we see that we miss seeing that whole idea of being that influence and what that looks like. It\u2019s less about being a doormat or being walked all over\u2014it\u2019s more about really leaning into this role of influence that God has called us to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It sounds like both your husband and your mother-in-law were thinking: \u201cThis is going to require a complete altering of your personality. You\u2019re going to have to become a different woman in order to become submissive.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes; I think that was\u2014you know, even my mom, when I told her, she kind of laughed pretty hard, I think, [Laughter] and said, \u201cOkay; Sara!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cGood luck!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you concerned that this was going to turn you into some mealy-mouthed woman that you\u2019re not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I was a little nervous about it, thinking, \u201cOkay; am I going to have to keep my mouth shut more times than I really want to?\u201d But honestly, I was approaching this from a question. You know, when you start an experiment, you have a hypothesis and you have observations you want to make. I really came into this, saying: \u201cOkay, God; what do <em>You<\/em> want to teach me about this whole idea of biblical submission in my marriage? What do <em>You<\/em> want to teach me about my role as a wife?\u201d and \u201cHow can I grow in this?\u201d That was primarily my motivation for doing this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, usually, when we make an experiment like this\u2014and we kind of put it out there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014God soon delivers a test where He really challenges the hypothesis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Was there a\u2014I\u2019m not talking about a minor deal\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014I\u2019m talking about one where it was, \u201cGulp!\u201d and you go, \u201cOkay; it\u2019s game on, and this is my assignment\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Well, there was a test toward the very beginning of the experiment\u2014I failed it miserably. As we got into this experiment and, you know, we were kind of going through the days, I was trying to find my way\u2014feel my way around\u2014what this looked like. We were living with my in-laws\u2014my husband had just gotten back from a deployment. We were kind of resettling, if you will, and figuring out what we were going to do next.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs much as I love my in-laws, I really was looking forward to our own house again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy husband had just, you know, been hired\u2014had a job with the state. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were slowly starting to work on that, but it wasn\u2019t happening quite fast enough for me. So, I found a part-time job that I had heard about\u2014I interviewed for. All of a sudden, I realized I hadn\u2019t said a word to my husband about it\u2014not asked him what he thought. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Whoa!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes; and I think I was traveling at the time. Yes! Big, big: \u201cWhoa!\u201d [Laughter] Big: \u201cOops! [Laughter] Whoops!\u201d\u2014not very biblically submissive. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So how did you brooch that subject with him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Well, I hadn\u2019t even thought about it. I think I was on the phone with him\u2014I was traveling\u2014I said, \u201cOh, by the way, I\u2019ve got this interview.\u201d He said: \u201cWait; what?! What is this about?\u201d So I said: \u201cOh! Whoops! I forgot to tell you about that.\u201d We talked about it. I was so far into that process already that he kind of shrugged his shoulders and said, \u201cOkay; Sara, if that\u2019s what you want to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut you are already doing all of these other things.\u201d So, I went ahead with it\u2014I took on a part-time job. Probably two weeks into it, I realized what a mistake I had made.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you long for Cliff to say, \u201cYou know, Sara, I\u2019d really like you to reconsider this\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> At the time, I probably was a little resistant to that. At the time, I was still kind of in my way of thinking: \u201cI can handle this. I know better. I can do this.\u201d It wasn\u2019t until I\u2019d kind of gotten through that whole first mistake that I realized, \u201cYou know, there\u2019s something to be said for coming to your husband and having a chat about something before you jump into it.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> \u2014and likewise for him too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have to give you a chance to tell a story that talks about when you got it right and you thought: \u201cI\u2019ve got it! This really works! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is really healthy for us. This is good for our marriage, and it\u2019s good for Cliff.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes. Well, one of the things that comes to mind is something I had always wanted my husband to do\u2014was family devotions. It was just kind of hard to get him to do that. It just wasn\u2019t on his heart\u2014not that he was against it\u2014he just hadn\u2019t really done it. I don\u2019t think they had done it, as a family, growing up. I\u2019d always wanted him to do it, and I never wanted to be the one to initiate it\u2014I wanted him to. For a long time, we just kind of went back and forth and never did family devotions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI might have to tell a little bit of a mistake and then what I learned from it. So, at the bookstore one day, I had found this devotional book that we could do with our son\u2014 that was appropriate for his age, at the time. I thought: \u201cYou know, maybe I should call him and see what he thinks. No, I\u2019ll just buy it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ll take it home and lay it out somewhere. Maybe he\u2019ll pick it up and have this sudden motivation to lead our family devotion.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got home that day, and I was so excited about it! He just happened to call me as I walked in\u2014I mentioned it to him. He kind of paused and said, \u201cOkay; why didn\u2019t you call me and ask what I might want to do?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, because I thought you might not want to do it.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, then why didn\u2019t you call me?\u201d [Laughter] We kind of went round and round. We actually ended up laughing about it, because it was so silly. The devotional sat there on the desk in the kitchen for months and was not picked up until one day he came in, and picked it up, and said, \u201cHey, would you like to do a devotional tonight?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, something that I started learning\u2014I got right, later\u2014was probably two or three weeks into it. We\u2019d been doing it [devotional] once a week. We were supposed to do it\u2014it was a Sunday night, and we were going to do it at a certain time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI noticed the time, and I noticed that he was still in our little game room. We were in our house by that point\u2014he was playing a video game with our son. I was kind of watching the time; and I was thinking, \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be our devotional time.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went into the game room and I said: \u201cDid you notice the time? Are we going to do the family devotion?\u201d I was trying to be as nice and sweet as possible. He said, \u201cYeah, yeah, yeah.\u201d I went into the living room, and I was sitting there. I read my book or whatever I was doing. About 15 minutes later, my husband and my son came in; and we did our family devotion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater that night, before we got ready for bed, Cliff kind of nudged me\u2014he said, \u201cI saw what you did there today.\u201d I said: \u201cReally? What?!\u201d He said: \u201cYou didn\u2019t nag me. You didn\u2019t harp on the fact that I was late starting our family devotion. You just let me decide when we were going to do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was one little example of what I kind of started to learn. You know, there is so much good that can happen when you step back just a little bit and let your husband have the room to lead, and to lead in his way, and to lead with his personality and his traits instead of trying to tell him how you think he should lead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think there are a lot of men, who are listening right now, who are saying, \u201cYou know, if she wants to lead, I\u2019ll just let her take over.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They get weary of competing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Huge!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think the easiest thing for them to do is lead in the marketplace\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and come home and vegetate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and just become passive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is a wise woman, who can pick up a book like this\u2014maybe begin their own secret\u2014I might say [whispering]: \u201cDon\u2019t tell him. Don\u2019t tell him you\u2019re going to do this. Don\u2019t tell your mother-in-law either!\u201d [Laughter] [Normal voice]: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJust do this experiment of saying: \u2018I\u2019m going to empower him. I\u2019m going to surprise him with how I empower him to be the man and to lead in our marriage \/ our family.\u2019 Just sit back and smile and see how God uses you, because a woman is never more powerful than when she is operating according to God\u2019s design.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There may be some husbands listening, who are going [heavy country accent]: \u201cWhere do I get me one of them there books you\u2019re talking about? [Laughter] I wanna get my wife a copy of <em>My So-Called Life as a Submissive Wife<\/em>! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What goes around comes around!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m going to put it on her pillow tonight!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Put it right there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t think that\u2019s a good idea?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> I highly discourage that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let her pick it up for herself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we do have copies of Sara\u2019s book in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center. He was \u201chooded\u201d with his PhD\u2014so we got to go to his commencement exercises last week. Lots of stuff like that is happening in families this month; and then you\u2019re starting to make plans for the summer, or maybe those plans are already underway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere, at FamilyLife, we\u2019ve got a lot going on as well. We\u2019ve got a number of projects that we are hoping to continue moving, full-speed ahead, on during the summer months. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo make that happen, we\u2019re asking friends of the ministry if they could make a donation, here in the month of May, so that we are well-prepared for what is coming this summer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve set a goal of trying to raise, this month, $1.1 million.
