We go in and we say, \u201cWhy are we here?\u201d The kids say, \u201cTo take care of business.\u201d We say, \u201cWhat is the business?\u201d They say, \u201cWisdom.\u201d We say, \u201cLet\u2019s get busy\u201d; and we start reading and sharing wisdom. That\u2019s how we start. We start with business; we don\u2019t start with touchy-feely \u201cI love you,\u201d because that\u2019s fake! I don\u2019t love you\u2014I just met you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo let\u2019s start with the business relationship. The business is wisdom. We interact; and over time, feelings develop and come forth. Always go with love in your heart\u2014the love of Jesus knocks down all types of barriers. It\u2019s the only force\u2014it\u2019s the greatest force in the world. There\u2019s a reason why the Book of Proverbs starts where it does, pointing people to the importance of wisdom. We\u2019ll talk about how Harold Davis is doing that today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking that the question I\u2019m about to ask you\u2014if I\u2019d asked you this question 25 years ago, when we were first getting started with <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, you\u2019d have said, \u201cYes.\u201d If I ask you this question 25 years from now, you\u2019d probably say, \u201cYes,\u201d then too. The question is: \u201cDo you think it is harder today to grow up, as a young person, in this culture?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh! [Laughter] Oh my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We thought\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m looking at my grandkids; and I\u2019m telling you\u2014this is a\u2014I hate to say it\u2014but it is back to Ephesians, Chapter 5: \u201c\u2026the days are evil.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are <em>bad<\/em> people out there; and there are easier ways today, through screens, to seduce our children at younger and younger ages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We thought things were hard 25 years ago, when we were raising the next generation. Now, as our kids are raising the next generation, it\u2019s just obvious to us that the stakes have gotten higher and the fight is harder.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And as you watch the breakdown of the family occur, it doesn\u2019t make it better\u2014because you\u2019re taking forces out of the culture, which push back against evil and push back for good\u2014because, even a family with its imperfect people, when it\u2019s together, it\u2019s a force for good\u2014it can make an impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we have a guest with us, Dr. Harold Davis, who knows this well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve been involved in leadership development training of young people for more than 20 years in the public school system through mentoring. You have a ministry called TALKS Mentoring, and you see the need Bob\u2019s talking about. Young people today are being pummeled with the cultural issues around sexual identity, around immorality, around the racial divide, around peer pressure of all kinds of things\u2014pornography on the internet\u2014I mean, these are tough days to grow up as a young person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; these are very tough days, but the same Jesus that helped my ancestors is here to help us now. We desperately need to get the Word of God to the young people. We have to get out to them\u2014we have to do practical things, like going to the elementary school and mentoring them \/ picking them up for Sunday school; because we have to get the message to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, when my kids were little and I was teaching them that it\u2019s wrong to tell a lie,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014the culture pretty much agreed with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It reinforced it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And they would say: \u201cYes; that\u2019s right. Lying is bad.\u201d Today\u2014well, you have to define what a lie is, and there might be circumstances under which it\u2019s okay. You take that\u2014with lying\u2014and you apply it with\u2014well, I was teaching my kids that sex should be for marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A young person today\u2014I\u2019m imagining, if you sat down with a 12-year-old and said, \u201cHave you ever stopped to think that sex should be for marriage only?\u201d they\u2019d look at you like, \u201cWhat planet are you from?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Absolutely. My daughter\u2014who was raised in <em>my<\/em> house, with prayer every morning before they went to school\u2014came home and she said to me\u2014she said, \u201cDad, if you\u2019re gay, you know, you\u2019re born that way.\u201d I about fell out off the chair: \u201cHow could she get that idea?\u201d\u2014you know, she had been raised in my home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo yes; the culture is impacting our children and our grandchildren now. I just believe that we should fight harder. We should pray harder, fight harder, teach harder.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, and these broadcasts are all about that\u2014to equip parents and give parents the courage to speak into their own children\u2019s lives to give them a sense of moral direction \/ spiritual direction, help them understand what it means to be a man and not a woman, what it means to be a woman and not a man, and also to point moms and dads beyond their own families to the boys and girls in school, where it\u2019s a ready-made ministry that the TALKS Mentoring program talks about\u2014to take three children once a week for <em>30 minutes<\/em> and have some of these conversations that you\u2019ve laid out. You have all kinds of books filled with talks \/ discussion points that kids desperately need to hear today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take us into one of those talks, and let\u2019s unpack it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Gaining an understanding of your orientation is important; because who will provide with objectivity\/fairness when dealing with yourself and others? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is possibly my most popular comment in the book, because that\u2019s what I see in all ages. People have not dealt with some of the issues and scars that they had, growing up. I\u2019m in my 60s, and I\u2019m still unpacking <em>garbage<\/em> from my formative years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA funny story\u2014my dad, who lived in the country\u2014Fayette County, up in the hills\u2014they didn\u2019t have a dentist. They just had Mr. Johnson, who kind of did those things. He told me this story millions of times. He would tell me about how he went to Mr. Johnson\u2019s house, and how Mr. Johnson took his huge hand and he put it in his mouth\u2026; and when he would tell the story, he would frown up, reliving it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, he was in his 70s, and he told me this story again. He\u2019d told it many times; and as he was telling the story, he stopped and snapped his fingers\u2014he says, \u201cThat\u2019s the reason he was sweating, because he had just come out of the fields!\u201d I thought to myself, \u201cIf this 70-year-old man is giving clarification on a childhood pain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>\u2014you know. We have people in their 30s, and 40s, and 50s, who\u2019ve not even started to investigate their pain. We have a lot of work to do to help people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we do; and you know, we\u2019re involved with couples, trying to work through marriage issues. Today, most people getting married\u2014if they used to bring suitcases into their marriage\u2014today, they\u2019re bringing foot lockers in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Wow; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014in large measure, because of the sexual activity that they\u2019ve brought with them into the marriage relationship. In fact, you wrote a book, just out of your frustration about the whole issue of marriage. As a pastor, you don\u2019t want to marry anybody anymore; do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>No. People come to me\u2014and they\u2019re smiling and they\u2019re happy\u2014and they say, \u201cWe want you to officiate our wedding!\u201d\u2014like I\u2019m supposed to jump up and be all happy. No\u2014the title of the book is <em>No<\/em>. \u201cI do not want to officiate your wedding, because there\u2019s so much <em>pain<\/em> associated with it.\u201d You know\u2014they look at you\u2014they say, \u201cYes,\u201d \/ they go through everything. They give you the impression that they understand; and then, they will separate and not even call you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey will not have said: \u201cPastor, we\u2019re getting ready to leave each other. Do you want to talk us?\u201d They\u2019ll just do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you haven\u2019t given up on marriage\u2014in fact, the subtitle of the book is <em>A Pastor\u2019s Commitment to Marriage<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re just talking about <em>preparing<\/em> this couple for something other than a ceremony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; something other than a little short fling basically. I really want to do more counseling\u2014I want to do more to prepare them. If I\u2019m going to marry you, it has to be a little more important\u2014it has to be important to you \/ the longevity has to be important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m thinking back to, again, a decade or two ago. There were big movements around teaching kids to \u201cJust say, \u2018No,\u2019 to sex\u201d; and then, there was the \u201cSay, \u2018No,\u2019 to immorality,\u201d\u2014the purity rings and the True Love Waits programs. In our culture today, the average person, who\u2019s getting married, hasn\u2019t waited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking the average 16-year-old girl has, at least, half of her friends who are not virgins anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And she\u2019s scratching her head, going, \u201cWhere\u2019s the payoff?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So if you\u2019re sitting down\u2014or your wife is sitting down with her\u2014or you\u2019re sitting down with that 16-year-old boy, who\u2019s going, \u201cAll my friends are telling me I must be gay, because I\u2019m still a virgin,\u201d how are you going to tell them that this really is for their good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Well, the first thing, I\u2019m going to let them know that there\u2019s an enemy that wants to destroy you. The way the enemy works is that he tries to affect us, early on, in life and capitalize on it later. Sexual activity early in your life\u2014he\u2019s going to capitalize on it later. I counseled a couple who were divorcing because one of them had called somebody else\u2019s name in the heat of passion. They were married, but they were getting divorced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou should go into marriage with a <em>blank<\/em> slate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell people: \u201cOn your honeymoon, you should say, \u2018What are we going to do?\u2019 \u2018Well, I don\u2019t know. Let\u2019s try this \/ let\u2019s try that.\u2019\u201d It should be new and refreshing for everybody\u2014that\u2019s God\u2019s design; you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI always give the kids the science of sharing bacteria. You know what I mean? When two people have sex, they have sex with them and everybody else that\u2019s in their bloodstream. Sex gets in their bloodstream, and everybody else you\u2019ve had sex with in your bloodstream. I give them the ugly truth about bacteria and everything and try to encourage them that God\u2019s design is for you to have a wonderful first time with your spouse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you see young men and young women responding to that today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>I want to say that I\u2019m on a university campus. I know lots of virgins on the college campus there\u2014they\u2019re still there, and they\u2019re Christians. They go to the support group they\u2019re in\u2014InterVarsity [Christian Fellowship], Campus Crusade<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and other stuff\u2014they get in their support group. They\u2019re still there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you look at the ones who aren\u2019t, and the ones who are hurt. See, Dennis, it only takes one hurt child to hurt me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>I focus on <em>one<\/em>. You know, I think about the fact, when you help somebody, you\u2019re helping somebody\u2019s <em>child<\/em>\u2014somebody\u2019s grandchild \/ somebody\u2019s sister\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>\u2014and that\u2019s the way I look at people. I look at everybody like Jesus died for them. I\u2019ll be in a crowd\u2014and I\u2019ll point out somebody that\u2019s just unseemly and odious in some way\u2014and I\u2019ll say, \u201cJesus would have died for that person if they were the only one on planet earth.\u201d All these children, every one of them, is special to the Lord; and we need to consider their hurts and their pains.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about issues around sexual identity \/ gender identity today; because that\u2019s obviously a point of tremendous peer pressure in junior high, high school, beyond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; wow! I\u2019m very biblical\u2014I just do the biblical perspective. It\u2019s become a fad right now. When I was in high school, the big deal was to go to the prom with a white girl. But you know, we\u2019re still talking boys and girls\u2014so I think they\u2019ve taken it to a new level. I think we need to provide them with the truth\u2014not be ashamed\u2014I don\u2019t go into it apologetically. I\u2019m just very clear and I tell them: \u201cNo; God\u2019s not happy with that. It\u2019s going to hurt you in the long run, and there\u2019s no future to it,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because there is no future in it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI go and explain to them\u2014when I was coming along, I was in bars and clubs; and it was everywhere\u2014same-sex relationships was everywhere. All those people that I know, the majority of them no longer with us. It\u2019s a high-risk lifestyle for males, and nobody talks about that. It\u2019s a very violent lifestyle for men; nobody talks about that. So it\u2019s something that I\u2019m straight with\u2014I tell the truth about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd even in my church, I often talk about the fact that I\u2019m married to the most beautiful woman in the world. I tell the deacons, \u201cNow, when I say that, you\u2019re supposed to say, \u2018Me too.\u2019 You\u2019re supposed to raise your hand and say, \u2018Me too.\u2019\u201d [Laughter] In my church, we celebrate masculinity. I talk about female femininity and how <em>wonderful<\/em> it is. See, what needs to happen is\u2014we need to do that. We need to talk about how wonderful female femininity is. We need to talk about how wonderful married sex is. Everybody has the idea that it is boring. We need to celebrate how wonderful it is, and nobody\u2019s telling the boys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople are afraid to say it; but as Christians, we have to tell the truth and tell them in love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I know, as you are involved in mentoring, there is a disproportionate number of black young men that you\u2019re working with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It seems to me, today, that racial tension \/ racial issues have kind of looped back around and have re-presented themselves in the culture. For awhile, I thought we were making progress!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Well, the human heart is deceitful above all things. I\u2019ll tell you a funny story\u2014as I sit here, this is hilarious. I remember, 30 years ago, I was listening to a radio program like we\u2019re making right now. I heard a white pastor talk about the fact that the race issue is just sin. I got frustrated with him\u2014I said: \u201cHe\u2019s copping out. He\u2019s not dealing with the real issues,\u201d and this, that, and the other. I just kind of turned it off, and I was frustrated. But now, 30 years later, having read the Bible a few times and had a few\u2014know a little bit about me and human nature\u2014the racial issue is just sin, and it\u2019s convenient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sitting here, looking at Dennis in the face, and if I wanted to call Dennis a name, the first and easiest name for me to say is, \u201cYou White-so-and-so,\u201d because he\u2019s white. It\u2019s just\u2014you know. But if Dennis\u2014if you have to call Bob a name, you\u2019re going to have to be a little more creative than that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; but you\u2019re talking about what\u2019s in a human heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It does divide us. So what kind of conversations are you having with young people today <em>in school<\/em> about addressing the racial divide?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>We talk about love. Love is the greatest force in the world. One of my most favorite groups in Champaign, Illinois\u2014is a gentleman by the name of Mike Webber, who mentored three boys\u2014one Latino, one black, and one white. When they got together, they weren\u2019t even that crazy about each other. He mentored them all the way through high school; and at the end, they were the best friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know\u2014let me share something with you. I\u2019m a former musician. One day, we had what\u2019s called a mis-booking\u2014that\u2019s when the booking agent does not look at the picture\u2014he just sends the band out. He sent us out to a Dewdrop Inn on the side of a hill in West Virginia. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time, we had four black guys and a white drummer. So we go to the Dewdrop Inn. I go to the door and I tell the guy, \u201cWe\u2019re your entertainment for tonight.\u201d He says, \u201cI\u2019ll be blankety blank, blankety blank, blankety blank, blankety blank if you are.\u201d I showed him a contract with his signature on it, and he reluctantly let us in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went in and the people saw what was coming in\u2014all white audience\u2014the only thing black in there was the shoes. They put their heads down: \u201cThis is our Friday night. It\u2019s ruined! Motown is here,\u201d and they were just totally, \u201cGive me a double. I\u2019m done,\u201d\u2014you know. They were totally done for the evening. We set up our instruments and everything. We told them who we were, and we told them that we\u2019re their entertainment. They were looking at us like, \u201cOh!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, I picked up the guitar; and I went [making guitar sounds]: \u201cDer, der, der, derr, derr, derr, dom, tickety-dom, tickety-dom.\u201d [Sounding like Johnny Cash]: \u201cI hear the train a comin\u2019\u2014it\u2019s comin\u2019 \u2018round the bend.\u201d [Laughter] And do you know? They begin to jump up and down, and whoop and holler, and dance and yell, because\u2014what had happened? What did I do? I literally stepped into their world. Johnny Cash was their world\u2014we did Johnny Cash. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were, all of a sudden, their best friends in the whole wide world\u2014we had a wonderful evening!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe ability to\u2014what?\u2014step into somebody\u2019s world. I don\u2019t care who it is\u2014I don\u2019t care who it is. If you can develop the ability to step into\u2014I have white friends \/ male friends, who have the ability to step into a young black friend\u2019s world, and they have done <em>wonderful<\/em> things toward helping them. So that goes in any direction \/ any direction. I mean, that applies for anything and everything. Salespeople know that; but I think we forget it, as Christians, in our attempt to meet the needs of people and to witness to people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s my answer to the racial problem\u2014I love on white people with the love of Jesus. That\u2019s what I do, and I don\u2019t have any problem with anybody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So what is\u2014and maybe you\u2019ve already answered this question\u2014but for a white person, who\u2019s stepping into a young black boy\u2019s world \/ a young black girl\u2019s world, what should a white person <em>know<\/em> as they attempt to engage around their world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Well, the first thing I would tell them\u2014we go in with a structure\u2014where the children agree to listen, they agree to cooperate, they agree to read and just think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe start there, and then relationships develop. We don\u2019t start with relationships. We go in and we say, \u201cWhy are we here?\u201d The kids say, \u201cTo take care of business.\u201d We say, \u201cWhat is the business?\u201d They say, \u201cWisdom.\u201d We say, \u201cLet\u2019s get busy\u201d; and we start reading and sharing wisdom. That\u2019s how we start. We start with business. We don\u2019t start with touchy-feely \u201cI love you,\u201d because that\u2019s fake. I don\u2019t love you\u2014I just met you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo let\u2019s start with the business relationship. The business is wisdom\u2014we interact; and over time, feelings develop and come forth. Some of these people\u2014it\u2019s really interesting\u2014I see grown people, all over town, who were in the mentoring program; and they will tell me, \u201cI\u2019m still talking to my mentor.\u201d They grew out of the mentoring situation into friends. I\u2019ll say this: \u201cAlways go with love in your heart. The love of Jesus knocks down all types of barriers. It\u2019s the only force\u2014it\u2019s the greatest force in the world. When you do that, you have an entree\u2014you\u2019re in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I would think one of the tough things you\u2019re going to run up against, trying to influence young men and young women, is the fact that they hear you for a half hour a week; but they hear their peer group 24\/7 on Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, on Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, text messages. The peer influence today\u2014peer pressure\u2019s always been an issue\u2014but it\u2019s never been as <em>constant<\/em> as it is today. Even if my kids are home, spending time with the family, they\u2019re still being influenced by their peers through their devices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Right; absolutely. My philosophy is: \u201cLet\u2019s give them the truth; because in the end, the truth is always going to win.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014I was with three boys. I said something to them; and then I said to them, \u201cI\u2019m going to be redundant here,\u201d and I said it again. Then, a couple of minutes later, I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to be redundant again,\u201d and I said it again. A couple minutes later, I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to be redundant again.\u201d The boys said, \u201cHe\u2019s going to say it again!\u201d We can\u2019t fear being redundant! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>And we have to drill it, and drill it, and drill it\u2014just like we hated to hear\u2014they hate it to hear\u2014but they <em>need<\/em> it when that day comes that they need that information.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What is parenting but being redundant?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Oh! I don\u2019t know what it is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, seriously\u2014 we used to think we were raising juvenile delinquents\u2014because our kids had so much sibling rivalry. We were trying to teach them how to ask for forgiveness, how to grant forgiveness, how to be reconciled with each other\u2014it was over, and over, and over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was relentless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it is the way we pass on real skills to young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>I think about the people that mentored me. Mr. Pratt was my first boss\u2014300 pounds \/ six-foot man\u2014and he would get in my grill, man. I still see him, from time to time, on certain concepts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy son was about to get in a fight on campus, and he said he saw my face\u2014that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s supposed to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to fill those voids\u2014and be the Mr. Pratts and be the other people that children, literally, see when they confront a situation. What could be better than providing them with a paradigm, an answer to a challenge that they\u2019re going to face?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what I would like to say to all kids: \u201cEvery morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019re the lion or the gazelle; when the sun comes up, you better be running. [Laughter] You better be running, and life is about running.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And part of our hope, in having you join us this week and be a part of these programs, is that folks, who are listening, who have a half hour a week that they could invest, will hear what we\u2019re talking about and say: \u201cIf I just had some outlines, I could\u2014I could talk with kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI could help get them pointed in the right direction. I don\u2019t know if I have one\u2014I love them all\u2014I don\u2019t know if I have one. But I will say this\u2014I was going to Chicago one time, and I stopped to get gas. I went in to pay for my gas. As I was coming out, a young man walked up to me, clean-cut black guy. I didn\u2019t remember him\u2014they always think you remember them. He says, \u201cI want to thank you for what you did.\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m 21 years old, never been in trouble, and I\u2019m going into the Navy in two weeks.\u201d That made it for me. I was done\u2014you could stick a fork in me. <\/strong>We don\u2019t start with relationships. We go in and we say, \u201cWhy are we here?\u201d The kids say, \u201cTo take care of business.\u201d We say, \u201cWhat is the business?\u201d They say, \u201cWisdom.\u201d We say, \u201cLet\u2019s get busy\u201d; and we start reading and sharing wisdom. There\u2019s a reason why the Book of Proverbs starts where it does, pointing people to the importance of wisdom. We\u2019ll talk about how Harold Davis is doing that today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking that the question I\u2019m about to ask you\u2014if I\u2019d asked you this question 25 years ago, when we were first getting started with <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, you\u2019d have said, \u201cYes.\u201d If I ask you this question 25 years from now, you\u2019d probably say, \u201cYes,\u201d then too. The question is: \u201cDo you think it is harder today to grow up, as a young person, in this culture?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh! [Laughter] Oh my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We thought\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m looking at my grandkids; and I\u2019m telling you\u2014this is a\u2014I hate to say it\u2014but it is back to Ephesians, Chapter 5: \u201c\u2026the days are evil.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are <em>bad<\/em> people out there; and there are easier ways today, through screens, to seduce our children at younger and younger ages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We thought things were hard 25 years ago, when we were raising the next generation. Now, as our kids are raising the next generation, it\u2019s just obvious to us that the stakes have gotten higher and the fight is harder.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And as you watch the breakdown of the family occur, it doesn\u2019t make it better\u2014because you\u2019re taking forces out of the culture, which push back against evil and push back for good\u2014because, even a family with its imperfect people, when it\u2019s together, it\u2019s a force for good\u2014it can make an impact. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we have a guest with us, Dr. Harold Davis, who knows this well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve been involved in leadership development training of young people for more than 20 years in the public school system through mentoring. You have a ministry called TALKS Mentoring, and you see the need Bob\u2019s talking about. Young people today are being pummeled with the cultural issues around sexual identity, around immorality, around the racial divide, around peer pressure of all kinds of things\u2014pornography on the internet\u2014I mean, these are tough days to grow up as a young person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; these are very tough days, but the same Jesus that helped my ancestors is here to help us now. We desperately need to get the Word of God to the young people. We have to get out to them\u2014we have to do practical things, like going to the elementary school and mentoring them \/ picking them up for Sunday school; because we have to get the message to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, when my kids were little and I was teaching them that it\u2019s wrong to tell a lie,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014the culture pretty much agreed with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It reinforced it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And they would say: \u201cYes; that\u2019s right. Lying is bad.\u201d Today\u2014well, you have to define what a lie is, and there might be circumstances under which it\u2019s okay. You take that\u2014with lying\u2014and you apply it with\u2014well, I was teaching my kids that sex should be for marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A young person today\u2014I\u2019m imagining, if you sat down with a 12-year-old and said, \u201cHave you ever stopped to think that sex should be for marriage only?\u201d they\u2019d look at you like, \u201cWhat planet are you from?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Absolutely. My daughter\u2014who was raised in <em>my<\/em> house, with prayer every morning before they went to school\u2014came home and she said to me\u2014she said, \u201cDad, if you\u2019re gay, you know, you\u2019re born that way.\u201d I about fell out off the chair: \u201cHow could she get that idea?\u201d\u2014you know, she had been raised in my home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo yes; the culture is impacting our children and our grandchildren now. I just believe that we should fight harder. We should pray harder, fight harder, teach harder.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, and these broadcasts are all about that\u2014to equip parents and give parents the courage to speak into their own children\u2019s lives to give them a sense of moral direction \/ spiritual direction, help them understand what it means to be a man and not a woman, what it means to be a woman and not a man, and also to point moms and dads beyond their own families to the boys and girls in school, where it\u2019s a ready-made ministry that the TALKS Mentoring program talks about\u2014to take three children once a week for <em>30 minutes<\/em> and have some of these conversations that you\u2019ve laid out. You have all kinds of books filled with talks \/ discussion points that kids desperately need to hear today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take us into one of those talks, and let\u2019s unpack it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Gaining an understanding of your orientation is important; because who will provide with objectivity\/fairness when dealing with yourself and others? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is possibly my most popular comment in the book, because that\u2019s what I see in all ages. People have not dealt with some of the issues and scars that they had, growing up. I\u2019m in my 60s, and I\u2019m still unpacking <em>garbage<\/em> from my formative years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA funny story\u2014my dad, who lived in the country\u2014Fayette County, up in the hills\u2014they didn\u2019t have a dentist. They just had Mr. Johnson, who kind of did those things. He told me this story millions of times. He would tell me about how he went to Mr. Johnson\u2019s house, and how Mr. Johnson took his huge hand and he put it in his mouth\u2026; and when he would tell the story, he would frown up, reliving it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, he was in his 70s, and he told me this story again. He\u2019d told it many times; and as he was telling the story, he stopped and snapped his fingers\u2014he says, \u201cThat\u2019s the reason he was sweating, because he had just come out of the fields!\u201d I thought to myself, \u201cIf this 70-year-old man is giving clarification on a childhood pain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>\u2014you know. We have people in their 30s, and 40s, and 50s, who\u2019ve not even started to investigate their pain. We have a lot of work to do to help people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we do; and you know, we\u2019re involved with couples, trying to work through marriage issues. Today, most people getting married\u2014if they used to bring suitcases into their marriage\u2014today, they\u2019re bringing foot lockers in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Wow; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014in large measure, because of the sexual activity that they\u2019ve brought with them into the marriage relationship. In fact, you wrote a book, just out of your frustration about the whole issue of marriage. As a pastor, you don\u2019t want to marry anybody anymore; do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>No. People come to me\u2014and they\u2019re smiling and they\u2019re happy\u2014and they say, \u201cWe want you to officiate our wedding!\u201d\u2014like I\u2019m supposed to jump up and be all happy. No\u2014the title of the book is <em>No<\/em>. \u201cI do not want to officiate your wedding, because there\u2019s so much <em>pain<\/em> associated with it.\u201d You know\u2014they look at you\u2014they say, \u201cYes,\u201d \/ they go through everything. They give you the impression that they understand; and then, they will separate and not even call you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey will not have said: \u201cPastor, we\u2019re getting ready to leave each other. Do you want to talk us?\u201d They\u2019ll just do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you haven\u2019t given up on marriage\u2014in fact, the subtitle of the book is <em>A Pastor\u2019s Commitment to Marriage<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re just talking about <em>preparing<\/em> this couple for something other than a ceremony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; something other than a little short fling basically. I really want to do more counseling\u2014I want to do more to prepare them. If I\u2019m going to marry you, it has to be a little more important\u2014it has to be important to you \/ the longevity has to be important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m thinking back to, again, a decade or two ago. There were big movements around teaching kids to \u201cJust say, \u2018No,\u2019 to sex\u201d; and then, there was the \u201cSay, \u2018No,\u2019 to immorality,\u201d\u2014the purity rings and the True Love Waits programs. In our culture today, the average person, who\u2019s getting married, hasn\u2019t waited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking the average 16-year-old girl has, at least, half of her friends who are not virgins anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And she\u2019s scratching her head, going, \u201cWhere\u2019s the payoff?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So if you\u2019re sitting down\u2014or your wife is sitting down with her\u2014or you\u2019re sitting down with that 16-year-old boy, who\u2019s going, \u201cAll my friends are telling me I must be gay, because I\u2019m still a virgin,\u201d how are you going to tell them that this really is for their good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Well, the first thing, I\u2019m going to let them know that there\u2019s an enemy that wants to destroy you. The way the enemy works is that he tries to affect us, early on, in life and capitalize on it later. Sexual activity early in your life\u2014he\u2019s going to capitalize on it later. I counseled a couple who were divorcing because one of them had called somebody else\u2019s name in the heat of passion. They were married, but they were getting divorced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou should go into marriage with a <em>blank<\/em> slate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell people: \u201cOn your honeymoon, you should say, \u2018What are we going to do?\u2019 \u2018Well, I don\u2019t know. Let\u2019s try this \/ let\u2019s try that.\u2019\u201d It should be new and refreshing for everybody\u2014that\u2019s God\u2019s design; you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI always give the kids the science of sharing bacteria. You know what I mean? When two people have sex, they have sex with them and everybody else that\u2019s in their bloodstream. Sex gets in their bloodstream, and everybody else you\u2019ve had sex with in your bloodstream. I give them the ugly truth about bacteria and everything and try to encourage them that God\u2019s design is for you to have a wonderful first time with your spouse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you see young men and young women responding to that today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>I want to say that I\u2019m on a university campus. I know lots of virgins on the college campus there\u2014they\u2019re still there, and they\u2019re Christians. They go to the support group they\u2019re in\u2014InterVarsity [Christian Fellowship], Campus Crusade<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and other stuff\u2014they get in their support group. They\u2019re still there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you look at the ones who aren\u2019t, and the ones who are hurt. See, Dennis, it only takes one hurt child to hurt me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>I focus on <em>one<\/em>. You know, I think about the fact, when you help somebody, you\u2019re helping somebody\u2019s <em>child<\/em>\u2014somebody\u2019s grandchild \/ somebody\u2019s sister\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>\u2014and that\u2019s the way I look at people. I look at everybody like Jesus died for them. I\u2019ll be in a crowd\u2014and I\u2019ll point out somebody that\u2019s just unseemly and odious in some way\u2014and I\u2019ll say, \u201cJesus would have died for that person if they were the only one on planet earth.\u201d All these children, every one of them, is special to the Lord; and we need to consider their hurts and their pains.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about issues around sexual identity \/ gender identity today; because that\u2019s obviously a point of tremendous peer pressure in junior high, high school, beyond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; wow! I\u2019m very biblical\u2014I just do the biblical perspective. It\u2019s become a fad right now. When I was in high school, the big deal was to go to the prom with a white girl. But you know, we\u2019re still talking boys and girls\u2014so I think they\u2019ve taken it to a new level. I think we need to provide them with the truth\u2014not be ashamed\u2014I don\u2019t go into it apologetically. I\u2019m just very clear and I tell them: \u201cNo; God\u2019s not happy with that. It\u2019s going to hurt you in the long run, and there\u2019s no future to it,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because there is no future in it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI go and explain to them\u2014when I was coming along, I was in bars and clubs; and it was everywhere\u2014same-sex relationships was everywhere. All those people that I know, the majority of them no longer with us. It\u2019s a high-risk lifestyle for males, and nobody talks about that. It\u2019s a very violent lifestyle for men; nobody talks about that. So it\u2019s something that I\u2019m straight with\u2014I tell the truth about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd even in my church, I often talk about the fact that I\u2019m married to the most beautiful woman in the world. I tell the deacons, \u201cNow, when I say that, you\u2019re supposed to say, \u2018Me too.\u2019 You\u2019re supposed to raise your hand and say, \u2018Me too.\u2019\u201d [Laughter] In my church, we celebrate masculinity. I talk about female femininity and how <em>wonderful<\/em> it is. See, what needs to happen is\u2014we need to do that. We need to talk about how wonderful female femininity is. We need to talk about how wonderful married sex is. Everybody has the idea that it is boring. We need to celebrate how wonderful it is, and nobody\u2019s telling the boys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople are afraid to say it; but as Christians, we have to tell the truth and tell them in love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I know, as you are involved in mentoring, there is a disproportionate number of black young men that you\u2019re working with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It seems to me, today, that racial tension \/ racial issues have kind of looped back around and have re-presented themselves in the culture. For awhile, I thought we were making progress!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Well, the human heart is deceitful above all things. I\u2019ll tell you a funny story\u2014as I sit here, this is hilarious. I remember, 30 years ago, I was listening to a radio program like we\u2019re making right now. I heard a white pastor talk about the fact that the race issue is just sin. I got frustrated with him\u2014I said: \u201cHe\u2019s copping out. He\u2019s not dealing with the real issues,\u201d and this, that, and the other. I just kind of turned it off, and I was frustrated. But now, 30 years later, having read the Bible a few times and had a few\u2014know a little bit about me and human nature\u2014the racial issue is just sin, and it\u2019s convenient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sitting here, looking at Dennis in the face, and if I wanted to call Dennis a name, the first and easiest name for me to say is, \u201cYou White-so-and-so,\u201d because he\u2019s white. It\u2019s just\u2014you know. But if Dennis\u2014if you have to call Bob a name, you\u2019re going to have to be a little more creative than that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; but you\u2019re talking about what\u2019s in a human heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It does divide us. So what kind of conversations are you having with young people today <em>in school<\/em> about addressing the racial divide?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>We talk about love. Love is the greatest force in the world. One of my most favorite groups in Champaign, Illinois\u2014is a gentleman by the name of Mike Webber, who mentored three boys\u2014one Latino, one black, and one white. When they got together, they weren\u2019t even that crazy about each other. He mentored them all the way through high school; and at the end, they were the best friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know\u2014let me share something with you. I\u2019m a former musician. One day, we had what\u2019s called a mis-booking\u2014that\u2019s when the booking agent does not look at the picture\u2014he just sends the band out. He sent us out to a Dewdrop Inn on the side of a hill in West Virginia. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time, we had four black guys and a white drummer. So we go to the Dewdrop Inn. I go to the door and I tell the guy, \u201cWe\u2019re your entertainment for tonight.\u201d He says, \u201cI\u2019ll be blankety blank, blankety blank, blankety blank, blankety blank if you are.\u201d I showed him a contract with his signature on it, and he reluctantly let us in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe went in and the people saw what was coming in\u2014all white audience\u2014the only thing black in there was the shoes. They put their heads down: \u201cThis is our Friday night. It\u2019s ruined! Motown is here,\u201d and they were just totally, \u201cGive me a double. I\u2019m done,\u201d\u2014you know. They were totally done for the evening. We set up our instruments and everything. We told them who we were, and we told them that we\u2019re their entertainment. They were looking at us like, \u201cOh!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, I picked up the guitar; and I went [making guitar sounds]: \u201cDer, der, der, derr, derr, derr, dom, tickety-dom, tickety-dom.\u201d [Sounding like Johnny Cash]: \u201cI hear the train a comin\u2019\u2014it\u2019s comin\u2019 \u2018round the bend.\u201d [Laughter] And do you know? They begin to jump up and down, and whoop and holler, and dance and yell, because\u2014what had happened? What did I do? I literally stepped into their world. Johnny Cash was their world\u2014we did Johnny Cash. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were, all of a sudden, their best friends in the whole wide world\u2014we had a wonderful evening!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe ability to\u2014what?\u2014step into somebody\u2019s world. I don\u2019t care who it is\u2014I don\u2019t care who it is. If you can develop the ability to step into\u2014I have white friends \/ male friends, who have the ability to step into a young black friend\u2019s world, and they have done <em>wonderful<\/em> things toward helping them. So that goes in any direction \/ any direction. I mean, that applies for anything and everything. Salespeople know that; but I think we forget it, as Christians, in our attempt to meet the needs of people and to witness to people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s my answer to the racial problem\u2014I love on white people with the love of Jesus. That\u2019s what I do, and I don\u2019t have any problem with anybody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So what is\u2014and maybe you\u2019ve already answered this question\u2014but for a white person, who\u2019s stepping into a young black boy\u2019s world \/ a young black girl\u2019s world, what should a white person <em>know<\/em> as they attempt to engage around their world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Well, the first thing I would tell them\u2014we go in with a structure\u2014where the children agree to listen, they agree to cooperate, they agree to read and just think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe start there, and then relationships develop. We don\u2019t start with relationships. We go in and we say, \u201cWhy are we here?\u201d The kids say, \u201cTo take care of business.\u201d We say, \u201cWhat is the business?\u201d They say, \u201cWisdom.\u201d We say, \u201cLet\u2019s get busy\u201d; and we start reading and sharing wisdom. That\u2019s how we start. We start with business. We don\u2019t start with touchy-feely \u201cI love you,\u201d because that\u2019s fake. I don\u2019t love you\u2014I just met you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo let\u2019s start with the business relationship. The business is wisdom\u2014we interact; and over time, feelings develop and come forth. Some of these people\u2014it\u2019s really interesting\u2014I see grown people, all over town, who were in the mentoring program; and they will tell me, \u201cI\u2019m still talking to my mentor.\u201d They grew out of the mentoring situation into friends. I\u2019ll say this: \u201cAlways go with love in your heart. The love of Jesus knocks down all types of barriers. It\u2019s the only force\u2014it\u2019s the greatest force in the world. When you do that, you have an entree\u2014you\u2019re in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I would think one of the tough things you\u2019re going to run up against, trying to influence young men and young women, is the fact that they hear you for a half hour a week; but they hear their peer group 24\/7 on Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, on Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, text messages. The peer influence today\u2014peer pressure\u2019s always been an issue\u2014but it\u2019s never been as <em>constant<\/em> as it is today. Even if my kids are home, spending time with the family, they\u2019re still being influenced by their peers through their devices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Right; absolutely. My philosophy is: \u201cLet\u2019s give them the truth; because in the end, the truth is always going to win.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014I was with three boys. I said something to them; and then I said to them, \u201cI\u2019m going to be redundant here,\u201d and I said it again. Then, a couple of minutes later, I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to be redundant again,\u201d and I said it again. A couple minutes later, I said, \u201cI\u2019m going to be redundant again.\u201d The boys said, \u201cHe\u2019s going to say it again!\u201d We can\u2019t fear being redundant! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>And we have to drill it, and drill it, and drill it\u2014just like we hated to hear\u2014they hate it to hear\u2014but they <em>need<\/em> it when that day comes that they need that information.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What is parenting but being redundant?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Oh! I don\u2019t know what it is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, seriously\u2014 we used to think we were raising juvenile delinquents\u2014because our kids had so much sibling rivalry. We were trying to teach them how to ask for forgiveness, how to grant forgiveness, how to be reconciled with each other\u2014it was over, and over, and over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was relentless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it is the way we pass on real skills to young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Harold: <\/strong>I think about the people that mentored me. Mr. Pratt was my first boss\u2014300 pounds \/ six-foot man\u2014and he would get in my grill, man. I still see him, from time to time, on certain concepts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy son was about to get in a fight on campus, and he said he saw my face\u2014that\u2019s exactly what\u2019s supposed to happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to fill those voids\u2014and be the Mr. Pratts and be the other people that children, literally, see when they confront a situation. What could be better than providing them with a paradigm, an answer to a challenge that they\u2019re going to face?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what I would like to say to all kids: \u201cEvery morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019re the lion or the gazelle; when the sun comes up, you better be running. [Laughter] You better be running, and life is about running.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And part of our hope, in having you join us this week and be a part of these programs, is that folks, who are listening, who have a half hour a week that they could invest, will hear what we\u2019re talking about and say: \u201cIf I just had some outlines, I could\u2014I could talk with kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI could help get them pointed in the right direction. I don\u2019t know if I have one\u2014I love them all\u2014I don\u2019t know if I have one. But I will say this\u2014I was going to Chicago one time, and I stopped to get gas. I went in to pay for my gas. As I was coming out, a young man walked up to me, clean-cut black guy. I didn\u2019t remember him\u2014they always think you remember them. He says, \u201cI want to thank you for what you did.\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019m 21 years old, never been in trouble, and I\u2019m going into the Navy in two weeks.\u201d That made it for me. I was done\u2014you could stick a fork in me.
