Then, the others came along the more typical way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Jedd, how about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd: <\/strong>Yes; I feel like, for a lot of folks, especially, if you grew up in the church, the idea is there. This goes for a lot of different issues\u2014but that movement from the head to the heart\u2014it often takes pain for that. I hear elements of that in both of these, and that was the case for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong><br><br>My wife and I had actually decided to adopt after two biological kids. Obviously, we were already, in a sense, headed in that direction\u2014it\u2019s a longer story. As we went through the adoption process, we were matched with a precious little girl from Ethiopia. She had been abandoned and brought in. She was about six months old\u2014just shortly before we were going to travel, they called us and said: \u201cJedd, please go home from work. We need to tell your wife and you something together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI headed home, right in the middle of the day, and called the adoption agency back. They said: \u201cLittle Ionia died. We didn\u2019t even have time to tell you she was sick, because it took her life so quickly. Her body was so frail.\u201d That was\u2014it was so remarkable just to realize how much you can grieve over a child you\u2019ve never even met, face to face, yet. A lot like a miscarriage\u2014just grieving over that precious little one you had not ever held. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that was one of those moments that took a lot of things from here [pointing to head] and moved it down to my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rick, the heart for the orphan\u2014where did it come from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>Yes; I shared earlier in the session\u2014those of you guys who were in that\u2014about my crisis, ten years ago, where God kind of beat me up and said, \u201cYou are totally missing this issue.\u201d God got my attention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Kay and I have not adopted; however, I\u2019m in the lives of literally\u2014maybe 50 kids in this church. I <em>genuinely<\/em> love children. I\u2019m in their lives all the time\u2014and a lot of the kids, whose dad is not in the picture, I\u2019m there. When I\u2019m not preaching, I walk the Sunday school classes. I want my kids in this church to know me. Papa Rick, or Pastor Rick\u2014there\u2019ll be 3,000 kids on this campus this weekend. I will hug maybe a fourth of them; okay?\u00a0 When I hug a kid, I go, \u201cI wonder how long that hug has got to last that kid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>I\u2019ve thought about going into full-time Christian hugging. [Laughter]\u00a0 But the truth is\u2014if I was not a senior pastor, I\u2019d been a children\u2019s pastor because I <em>genuinely<\/em> learn so much from kids\u2014I love being around them. They are the single greatest thing to teach you humility and unselfishness. They keep you real. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rick, I\u2019ve got a hypothesis that I want to try out on you and see if you agree. It seems to me that, within the church, if somebody is going to have a heart for the orphan, it\u2019s more likely to be a woman than a man. You think that\u2019s right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick: <\/strong>Only because we haven\u2019t gotten the message to men. I think if men understood this simple fact: \u201cRight, now, in America, 25 percent of all white kids grow up without the presence of the dad in their home\u201425 percent. Fifty percent of all Hispanic kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in their home. Seventy-five percent of all African American kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in the home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is a disaster waiting to happen! Studies have shown that the number one predictor for whether a kid makes it in life is the presence of a caring adult in that child\u2019s life. It doesn\u2019t have to be a parent, but it has to be somebody who cares. I think we have to rally men\u2014not just for adoption\u2014but for every kind of thing to involve them in the lives of kids, who don\u2019t have a male model in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Jedd, you and I were talking about this earlier. There is, in the heart of a woman, a nurturing instinct. Do you think God\u2019s wired women to have a heart for this more than men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd: <\/strong>I think He\u2019s wired women to have a special role in the life of children, and He\u2019s wired men to have a special role in the lives of children. That\u2019s going to be different\u2014it\u2019s complimentary\u2014there are times when it overlaps. Men need to be nurturing, too, of course; but there\u2019s something in us that yearns to protect, yearns to do strong things, yearns to do those things that often we don\u2019t associate with caring for orphans \/ caring for children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think\u2014when we can connect some of these biblical themes of\u2014you know, it says in Isaiah, \u201cDefend the cause of the fatherless...\u201d\u2014that feels manly, and it is. We can associate it\u2014not only with things like bringing out a sword and fighting bad guys\u2014but standing between a child and a dark future because every one of these kids, who\u2019s growing up without a mom and a dad\u2014even ones who, theoretically, have moms and dads in their homes, as you\u2019re saying, Rick, but their dad is not engaged with their life\u2014their future is <em>statistically<\/em> very dark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a defensive, protective, strong act to stand in between that boy and that future \/ that girl and that future and say, \u201cI will protect you from that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This afternoon, I was interviewed on a radio show. In the green room, where I was interviewed, there was a Bible opened. It was opened to this passage\u2014I kept looking at it and kept thinking about orphans and how this appeals to something within a man, who\u2019s called to be a warrior on behalf of all people\u2014but especially, the helpless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProverbs 3, verse 1, \u201cMy son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments. For length of days and years of life and peace, they will add to you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink of the boy and the girl who don\u2019t have a daddy to teach and instruct around morality, around a relationship with God, around what danger is, and what it looks like for a young lady or for a young man. To me\u2014I think I agree with you, Rick\u2014I think one of the reasons why more men have not engaged in the plight of the orphans is we haven\u2019t brought men near where the orphan is\u2014sex slavery and trade\u2014<em>horrific<\/em> things done to children who don\u2019t have a daddy to protect them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, when men see that, I think there is something within our chest that calls us, as men: \u201cWe must initiate. We must protect.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve heard the stories here from you. You guys are all here because there\u2019s something within your chest that says, \u201cThis movement needs men\u201d; and I commend you for that\u2014really do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Russell, a lot of guys\u2014if they go out and play a game; and they\u2019re not any good at it \/ they\u2019re just not\u2014they\u2019ll find another game\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because we like to play games we can win. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In this area of life, the issue is so big it seems unwinnable. The amount of effort it takes to win with one child is significant. I can see where a guy goes, \u201cGiven the odds, I\u2019ll watch ESPN.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>Right; but that\u2019s, of course\u2014that\u2019s part of <em>everything<\/em> in the Christian life. That\u2019s what discipleship is like\u2014that\u2019s what doing spiritual warfare is like. When you look at the depth of how wrong the world has gone, in so many ways, there is a sense in which\u2014if that\u2019s all you see, then, there is a tendency to despair\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut if you have an understanding of the Holy Spirit and of the power of God that\u2019s involved in that\u2014that ought to give a sense of understanding the depth of the problem\u2014but also, a sense of hope and of optimism that is present there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the reasons why a lot of men are distant from this issue is because we tend to\u2014in our churches\u2014often present this issue in terms of cute, little orphans. We\u2019re trying to say: \u201cLook at these cute, little orphans. They need a home. Welcome them into your home.\u201d That\u2019s true\u2014that\u2019s part of it\u2014but what we see going on with the orphan crisis is not just a material problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a spiritual warfare issue where something has gone badly wrong in the universe\u2014where you have some beings out there, who hate children; because children represent newness of life and represent a threat that was made to their power many, many years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think if men understand and see this\u2014that what we\u2019re really calling them to do is what God called Joseph of Nazareth to do when He says: \u201cTake this woman in. Take this child in, as your son.\u201d\u00a0 He names Jesus. He takes Jesus into Egypt\u2014which doesn\u2019t just mean moving the way we might move from Orange County to Minnesota for a while. This meant abandoning <em>everything<\/em>\u2014your whole economic future\u2014in order to care for this woman and this child. What Joseph is doing is demon-wrestling.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we\u2019re calling men to do. When we\u2019re taking in children and defending children, we are taking on principalities and powers that want to destroy the image of Christ and to say, \u201cNo, these children are worth it,\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when we take a Down syndrome child into our home\u2014that the rest of the world says, \u201cWhy would you bother with this child, who\u2019s not going to have a successful future?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when you take that child with AIDS into your arms and you\u2019re not scared of her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when you\u2019re ministering to those people\u2014what you\u2019re doing is not just something nurturing and loving\u2014although that\u2019s true\u2014you\u2019re also declaring war on everything that would say, \u201cThis isn\u2019t worth it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rick, if you were going to\u2014let\u2019s say it is Sunday morning at Saddleback\u2014and you\u2019re going to say, \u201cThis evening, we want to rally folks who really want to engage in this orphan issue,\u201d \u2014and you want men to be there. How would you\u2014how would you plead the case in a way that would call out the men? \u2014as opposed\u2014because if you just said, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to do a thing on orphans\u2014anybody who has an interest, come.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think you\u2019d have 90 percent women and 10 percent guys. So, how would you call the men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick: <\/strong>Right; right.It\u2019s always the way you frame it\u2014so, frame it as leadership training. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick: <\/strong>Frame it as mentoring. Frame it as leaving a legacy. Frame it as, \u201cThis may be the most significant thing you do with your life,\u201d \u2014because a life changed by \/ one life changed is going to far outlast your career. Sorry, but it\u2019s going to outlast your career\u2014 because that human being is going to live on for eternity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>One of the things that has come up here several times, I think is one of the problems with the way that we try to call people to care for the orphans. We know that people are scared of the risks of being involved with orphans\u2014so what we want to do is have testimonies that try to take that risk out or to minimize that risk: \u201cIt\u2019s really a joyful experience.\u201d It\u2019s: \u201cLook at these happy families,\u201d and whatever. When, in reality, if we are calling men into this, we have to call them into the risk and say: \u201cThis is a cross-bearing\u2014Look into the eyes of this risk and take this on in terms of a challenge that means that you\u2019re pouring yourself out as Christ loved the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not saying you\u2019re necessarily going to have a happy, sweet, sentimental ending to this. This may cost you your life, but it\u2019s worth it. It\u2019s worth it. I think men will respond to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Rick, at Saddleback, you\u2019re calling your members to get involved in\u2014in a variety of ways\u2014kingdom agendas. The orphan is going to be a concern for a <em>percentage<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs it right that it ought to be for a percentage as opposed to for the whole? I mean, it seems overwhelming for all of us to get involved in every aspect of the peace plan; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong> Well, yes; there\u2019s no doubt about it\u2014God calls us to different causes. If we all like to do the same things, there\u2019d be a lot that didn\u2019t get done. So, no; you don\u2019t make people feel bad because they say, \u201cThat\u2019s not my particular calling.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re just saying with this conference is: \u201cWe need to call out more. There are a number of people there that simply haven\u2019t been called out.\u201d When they step out\u2014now, as they said\u2014I don\u2019t believe everybody is called to adopt, but I do believe everybody\u2019s called to have children in their lives. You can get a Timothy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong> Okay? By the way, I always like to give guys a little practical faith. Here\u2019s something I\u2019ve done with Timothys for 40 years: I call it SHARE\u2014S-H-A-R-E. First, Study the Word together. H: Help him with a practical need. A: Assign him a project that you work on. R: Review your Bible verses. E: Encourage him with prayer\u2014you pray with him and for him. It\u2019s not rocket science.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>I agree with Rick\u2014God does not call everybody to adopt or to foster. God <em>does<\/em> call everybody, within the body of Christ, to James 1:27\u2014care for the widows and the orphans in their distress\u2014but that looks different in so many different ways. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to say, \u201cHow is God calling me?\u201d and sometimes what that means is to step back and simply say, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know how You\u2019re calling me to minister to the widow and to the orphan, but would You show me and would You give me a desire \/ would You give me a passion in the area?\u201d That looks\u2014that could be a <em>thousand<\/em> different things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dennis, if a guy is listening and he thinks: \u201cYou know, God\u2019s put a burden for this on my wife\u2019s heart but really hasn\u2019t put a burden on my heart. It\u2019s cool\u2014she can do her thing\u2014that\u2019s fine. I\u2019m going to be involved in something else.\u201d Is that okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the first response. I think the first response is what you just said: \u201cPray and ask God: \u2018What is my part? What do You want me to do?\u2019\u201d Here\u2019s the deal, guys\u2014you can grow old for something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You are not designed by God to <em>rust out<\/em>. You are designed to <em>stretch out<\/em>\u2014to the finish line. Then, the others came along the more typical way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Jedd, how about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd: <\/strong>Yes; I feel like, for a lot of folks, especially, if you grew up in the church, the idea is there. This goes for a lot of different issues\u2014but that movement from the head to the heart\u2014it often takes pain for that. I hear elements of that in both of these, and that was the case for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong><br><br>My wife and I had actually decided to adopt after two biological kids. Obviously, we were already, in a sense, headed in that direction\u2014it\u2019s a longer story. As we went through the adoption process, we were matched with a precious little girl from Ethiopia. She had been abandoned and brought in. She was about six months old\u2014just shortly before we were going to travel, they called us and said: \u201cJedd, please go home from work. We need to tell your wife and you something together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI headed home, right in the middle of the day, and called the adoption agency back. They said: \u201cLittle Ionia died. We didn\u2019t even have time to tell you she was sick, because it took her life so quickly. Her body was so frail.\u201d That was\u2014it was so remarkable just to realize how much you can grieve over a child you\u2019ve never even met, face to face, yet. A lot like a miscarriage\u2014just grieving over that precious little one you had not ever held. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that was one of those moments that took a lot of things from here [pointing to head] and moved it down to my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rick, the heart for the orphan\u2014where did it come from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>Yes; I shared earlier in the session\u2014those of you guys who were in that\u2014about my crisis, ten years ago, where God kind of beat me up and said, \u201cYou are totally missing this issue.\u201d God got my attention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Kay and I have not adopted; however, I\u2019m in the lives of literally\u2014maybe 50 kids in this church. I <em>genuinely<\/em> love children. I\u2019m in their lives all the time\u2014and a lot of the kids, whose dad is not in the picture, I\u2019m there. When I\u2019m not preaching, I walk the Sunday school classes. I want my kids in this church to know me. Papa Rick, or Pastor Rick\u2014there\u2019ll be 3,000 kids on this campus this weekend. I will hug maybe a fourth of them; okay?\u00a0 When I hug a kid, I go, \u201cI wonder how long that hug has got to last that kid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>I\u2019ve thought about going into full-time Christian hugging. [Laughter]\u00a0 But the truth is\u2014if I was not a senior pastor, I\u2019d been a children\u2019s pastor because I <em>genuinely<\/em> learn so much from kids\u2014I love being around them. They are the single greatest thing to teach you humility and unselfishness. They keep you real. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rick, I\u2019ve got a hypothesis that I want to try out on you and see if you agree. It seems to me that, within the church, if somebody is going to have a heart for the orphan, it\u2019s more likely to be a woman than a man. You think that\u2019s right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick: <\/strong>Only because we haven\u2019t gotten the message to men. I think if men understood this simple fact: \u201cRight, now, in America, 25 percent of all white kids grow up without the presence of the dad in their home\u201425 percent. Fifty percent of all Hispanic kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in their home. Seventy-five percent of all African American kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in the home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is a disaster waiting to happen! Studies have shown that the number one predictor for whether a kid makes it in life is the presence of a caring adult in that child\u2019s life. It doesn\u2019t have to be a parent, but it has to be somebody who cares. I think we have to rally men\u2014not just for adoption\u2014but for every kind of thing to involve them in the lives of kids, who don\u2019t have a male model in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Jedd, you and I were talking about this earlier. There is, in the heart of a woman, a nurturing instinct. Do you think God\u2019s wired women to have a heart for this more than men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd: <\/strong>I think He\u2019s wired women to have a special role in the life of children, and He\u2019s wired men to have a special role in the lives of children. That\u2019s going to be different\u2014it\u2019s complimentary\u2014there are times when it overlaps. Men need to be nurturing, too, of course; but there\u2019s something in us that yearns to protect, yearns to do strong things, yearns to do those things that often we don\u2019t associate with caring for orphans \/ caring for children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think\u2014when we can connect some of these biblical themes of\u2014you know, it says in Isaiah, \u201cDefend the cause of the fatherless...\u201d\u2014that feels manly, and it is. We can associate it\u2014not only with things like bringing out a sword and fighting bad guys\u2014but standing between a child and a dark future because every one of these kids, who\u2019s growing up without a mom and a dad\u2014even ones who, theoretically, have moms and dads in their homes, as you\u2019re saying, Rick, but their dad is not engaged with their life\u2014their future is <em>statistically<\/em> very dark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a defensive, protective, strong act to stand in between that boy and that future \/ that girl and that future and say, \u201cI will protect you from that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This afternoon, I was interviewed on a radio show. In the green room, where I was interviewed, there was a Bible opened. It was opened to this passage\u2014I kept looking at it and kept thinking about orphans and how this appeals to something within a man, who\u2019s called to be a warrior on behalf of all people\u2014but especially, the helpless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProverbs 3, verse 1, \u201cMy son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments. For length of days and years of life and peace, they will add to you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink of the boy and the girl who don\u2019t have a daddy to teach and instruct around morality, around a relationship with God, around what danger is, and what it looks like for a young lady or for a young man. To me\u2014I think I agree with you, Rick\u2014I think one of the reasons why more men have not engaged in the plight of the orphans is we haven\u2019t brought men near where the orphan is\u2014sex slavery and trade\u2014<em>horrific<\/em> things done to children who don\u2019t have a daddy to protect them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, when men see that, I think there is something within our chest that calls us, as men: \u201cWe must initiate. We must protect.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve heard the stories here from you. You guys are all here because there\u2019s something within your chest that says, \u201cThis movement needs men\u201d; and I commend you for that\u2014really do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Russell, a lot of guys\u2014if they go out and play a game; and they\u2019re not any good at it \/ they\u2019re just not\u2014they\u2019ll find another game\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because we like to play games we can win. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>In this area of life, the issue is so big it seems unwinnable. The amount of effort it takes to win with one child is significant. I can see where a guy goes, \u201cGiven the odds, I\u2019ll watch ESPN.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>Right; but that\u2019s, of course\u2014that\u2019s part of <em>everything<\/em> in the Christian life. That\u2019s what discipleship is like\u2014that\u2019s what doing spiritual warfare is like. When you look at the depth of how wrong the world has gone, in so many ways, there is a sense in which\u2014if that\u2019s all you see, then, there is a tendency to despair\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut if you have an understanding of the Holy Spirit and of the power of God that\u2019s involved in that\u2014that ought to give a sense of understanding the depth of the problem\u2014but also, a sense of hope and of optimism that is present there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the reasons why a lot of men are distant from this issue is because we tend to\u2014in our churches\u2014often present this issue in terms of cute, little orphans. We\u2019re trying to say: \u201cLook at these cute, little orphans. They need a home. Welcome them into your home.\u201d That\u2019s true\u2014that\u2019s part of it\u2014but what we see going on with the orphan crisis is not just a material problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a spiritual warfare issue where something has gone badly wrong in the universe\u2014where you have some beings out there, who hate children; because children represent newness of life and represent a threat that was made to their power many, many years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think if men understand and see this\u2014that what we\u2019re really calling them to do is what God called Joseph of Nazareth to do when He says: \u201cTake this woman in. Take this child in, as your son.\u201d\u00a0 He names Jesus. He takes Jesus into Egypt\u2014which doesn\u2019t just mean moving the way we might move from Orange County to Minnesota for a while. This meant abandoning <em>everything<\/em>\u2014your whole economic future\u2014in order to care for this woman and this child. What Joseph is doing is demon-wrestling.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we\u2019re calling men to do. When we\u2019re taking in children and defending children, we are taking on principalities and powers that want to destroy the image of Christ and to say, \u201cNo, these children are worth it,\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when we take a Down syndrome child into our home\u2014that the rest of the world says, \u201cWhy would you bother with this child, who\u2019s not going to have a successful future?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when you take that child with AIDS into your arms and you\u2019re not scared of her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when you\u2019re ministering to those people\u2014what you\u2019re doing is not just something nurturing and loving\u2014although that\u2019s true\u2014you\u2019re also declaring war on everything that would say, \u201cThis isn\u2019t worth it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Rick, if you were going to\u2014let\u2019s say it is Sunday morning at Saddleback\u2014and you\u2019re going to say, \u201cThis evening, we want to rally folks who really want to engage in this orphan issue,\u201d \u2014and you want men to be there. How would you\u2014how would you plead the case in a way that would call out the men? \u2014as opposed\u2014because if you just said, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to do a thing on orphans\u2014anybody who has an interest, come.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think you\u2019d have 90 percent women and 10 percent guys. So, how would you call the men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick: <\/strong>Right; right.It\u2019s always the way you frame it\u2014so, frame it as leadership training. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick: <\/strong>Frame it as mentoring. Frame it as leaving a legacy. Frame it as, \u201cThis may be the most significant thing you do with your life,\u201d \u2014because a life changed by \/ one life changed is going to far outlast your career. Sorry, but it\u2019s going to outlast your career\u2014 because that human being is going to live on for eternity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>One of the things that has come up here several times, I think is one of the problems with the way that we try to call people to care for the orphans. We know that people are scared of the risks of being involved with orphans\u2014so what we want to do is have testimonies that try to take that risk out or to minimize that risk: \u201cIt\u2019s really a joyful experience.\u201d It\u2019s: \u201cLook at these happy families,\u201d and whatever. When, in reality, if we are calling men into this, we have to call them into the risk and say: \u201cThis is a cross-bearing\u2014Look into the eyes of this risk and take this on in terms of a challenge that means that you\u2019re pouring yourself out as Christ loved the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re not saying you\u2019re necessarily going to have a happy, sweet, sentimental ending to this. This may cost you your life, but it\u2019s worth it. It\u2019s worth it. I think men will respond to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Rick, at Saddleback, you\u2019re calling your members to get involved in\u2014in a variety of ways\u2014kingdom agendas. The orphan is going to be a concern for a <em>percentage<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs it right that it ought to be for a percentage as opposed to for the whole? I mean, it seems overwhelming for all of us to get involved in every aspect of the peace plan; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong> Well, yes; there\u2019s no doubt about it\u2014God calls us to different causes. If we all like to do the same things, there\u2019d be a lot that didn\u2019t get done. So, no; you don\u2019t make people feel bad because they say, \u201cThat\u2019s not my particular calling.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re just saying with this conference is: \u201cWe need to call out more. There are a number of people there that simply haven\u2019t been called out.\u201d When they step out\u2014now, as they said\u2014I don\u2019t believe everybody is called to adopt, but I do believe everybody\u2019s called to have children in their lives. I say that without fear\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong> \u2014because they keep you young; they keep you humble; they keep you unselfish; they have all kinds of things to teach you\u2014they force you to get out of your hole. Nothing is more self-centered than a person who has no children in his life. I\u2019m sorry\u2014I may offend you, but it\u2019s the truth. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other ways to build into the lives of children. If a guy comes and goes: \u201cLook, I\u2019m not in a place to adopt. I\u2019m on the road 50 weeks a year,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m a single person, and I can\u2019t be on the roll, \u201d and all\u2014fine! You can get a Timothy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong> Okay? By the way, I always like to give guys a little practical faith. Here\u2019s something I\u2019ve done with Timothys for 40 years: I call it SHARE\u2014S-H-A-R-E. First, Study the Word together. H: Help him with a practical need. A: Assign him a project that you work on. R: Review your Bible verses. E: Encourage him with prayer\u2014you pray with him and for him. It\u2019s not rocket science.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell: <\/strong>I agree with Rick\u2014God does not call everybody to adopt or to foster. God <em>does<\/em> call everybody, within the body of Christ, to James 1:27\u2014care for the widows and the orphans in their distress\u2014but that looks different in so many different ways. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to say, \u201cHow is God calling me?\u201d and sometimes what that means is to step back and simply say, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know how You\u2019re calling me to minister to the widow and to the orphan, but would You show me and would You give me a desire \/ would You give me a passion in the area?\u201d That looks\u2014that could be a <em>thousand<\/em> different things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dennis, if a guy is listening and he thinks: \u201cYou know, God\u2019s put a burden for this on my wife\u2019s heart but really hasn\u2019t put a burden on my heart. It\u2019s cool\u2014she can do her thing\u2014that\u2019s fine. I\u2019m going to be involved in something else.\u201d Is that okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the first response. I think the first response is what you just said: \u201cPray and ask God: \u2018What is my part? What do You want me to do?\u2019\u201d Here\u2019s the deal, guys\u2014you can grow old for something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You are not designed by God to <em>rust out<\/em>. You are designed to <em>stretch out<\/em>\u2014to the finish line. I want to do that with my wife! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the offense\u2014going on the offense\u2014is healthy for a marriage. Back to your point of spiritual battle, I think there\u2019s something really very mystical\u2014but profoundly practical\u2014about engaging in spiritual battle, as a couple, around a calling like this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Again, we\u2019ve been listening to Rick Warren, and Russell Moore, and Jedd Medefind, and Dennis Rainey, all talking about the needs of orphans and men getting engaged.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, in listening to this again, I\u2019m sharpened afresh! [Laughter] I mean, I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s razor-edge, but this is the day folks\u2014as a man, if you haven\u2019t stepped up and engaged in the spiritual battle that\u2019s coming at you and your family\u2014your community\u2014then you need to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you, Bob\u2014it\u2019s time for iron to sharpen iron at the grassroots level and to see a mobilization of an army that says: \u201cWe, as men, are not going to let evil overtake our homes, our communities, or our nation.
