Jessica Thompson says there is a danger when you\u2019re raising that kind of child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Being a good kid doesn\u2019t equal being a Christian. I think there is a way to talk to kids, telling them over and over again: \u201cYour goodness will <em>never<\/em> be good enough. You need the goodness of Jesus Christ. You need His righteousness alone to stand before a Holy God.\u201d So, to tell your kids, \u201cPut your own goodness away and trust and rest in the goodness of Jesus Christ on your behalf.\u201d That\u2019s a message that our kids need to hear so that we\u2019re not raising Pharisees and legalists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, April 18<sup>th<\/sup>. Are your kids getting the right message from you, as you raise them to love and obey Jesus? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about our kids\u2019 spiritual formation today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. We were talking, earlier, about a survey that we had done a number of years ago\u2014a really significant survey. We talked to more than a 100,000 people; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: We were asking them all kind of questions about marriage and family. One of the questions was, \u201cWhere do you need the most help in your parenting?\u201d The answer that came back was, \u201cIt\u2019s really the spiritual development \/ the spiritual formation of our kids where we feel like we need help.\u201d\u00a0 So, as a ministry, we\u2019ve been focused, over the years, in trying to make that a strong part of what we provide for moms and dads\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014whether it\u2019s through resources like the Resurrection Eggs<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014that were just recently used by a lot of families, coming up to the Easter holiday\u2014or resources like <em>Passport to Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and <em>Passport to Identity<\/em>\u2122 used with teens. We\u2019ve been trying to take real life events that we all go through and say, \u201cIs there a way to use this as a springboard for a spiritual conversation?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; in fact, I don\u2019t think they\u2019ll mind me saying this; but we\u2019ve been focused on the family. [Laughter] Jim Daly will love that\u2014and that he got some press, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019ve been focused on the family as well. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They have; no doubt about it. [Laughter] But that\u2019s what a parent\u2019s assignment is\u2014you are to introduce your son or daughter to who God is. You need to understand they are going to get their first glimpses of who God is from you,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and your spouse, and your family. Make sure you are being intentional about doing a good job of coming out of the Bible and making sure the God you are introducing them to is the God of the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have often quoted Psalm 78, which is a Psalm about passing on a spiritual legacy. I\u2019ve heard you say the assignment for parents is to tell your children the truth about who God is; but then, also come along and tell them about how your own history \/ your own life has been marked by God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Yes; you don\u2019t want to just pass on truth. You want to pass on your <em>experience<\/em> of who God is that is based on the truth of Scripture. The command there in Psalm 78 is for us to do both\u2014\u2014give them the precepts, give them the commandments, teach them the very essence of what the Bible is talking about in our character formation\u2014choosing what\u2019s right \/ not what\u2019s wrong; being wise \/ not a fool\u2014yet, at the same time, to pass on how you experienced God in the marketplace today \/ how you experienced God on another day, other than just Sunday, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where Christian parent\u2019s, I think, need to become much more intentional and purposeful in letting kids into the interior \/ into their souls about how they are finding God every day and how God\u2019s using them is some of the situations that they\u2019re in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Later this year, we\u2019re going to be celebrating our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Our program went on the air in November of 1992. As we head up to that 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday celebration, we have been taking topics\u2014like the spiritual development of your children\u2014and going back and finding people who have spoken on that subject over the past 25 years \/ pulled out some of the significant statements people shared with us during that time period. One of the things that you shared, years ago, on this subject is something that I\u2019ve seen in surveys today. A lot of kids today, growing up in Christian homes, are hitting the teen years or heading off to college and rejecting their Christian background. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things you said, years ago, was: \u201cIt\u2019s vital for a mom and dad\u2019s faith to be authentic if we want our children\u2019s faith to be authentic.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to tell you how long ago this was said; but it points out to the timeless truths of Scripture, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You can talk about the Bible, you can teach the Bible, you can have kids memorize verses from the Bible; but, if your life is not living the life in front of them that is <em>obedient<\/em> to the Bible and the God of the Bible, then it\u2019s contradictory\u2014they\u2019re getting a mixed signal. I think one of the tragedies today is that Christian parents send this mixed signal to their kids, thinking that they\u2019re doing the right thing\u2014by taking them to youth group, taking them to church, getting them in a Bible Study\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014while the parents are making choices that are contrary to the Book the kids are reading. The kids are reading it, and they\u2019re looking at their parents\u2019 lives; and the parent\u2019s life is not authenticating the Book they\u2019re reading. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what God wants of us, as parents\u2014he wants us to model \/ to demonstrate the Book in front of our kids. That means admitting our sins, admitting our faults, and confessing our sins to our kids. Our kids have seen Barbara and they\u2019ve seen me come to them and say: \u201cI\u2019m sorry. Will you forgive me? The Lord convicted me that I spoke harshly to you,\u201d\u00a0 \u201c\u2026I spoke out of anger,\u201d or \u201c\u2026I didn\u2019t have the right attitude to you in that conversation.\u201d They\u2019ve heard that, repeatedly, over the years. And you know\u2014I don\u2019t know, Bob, what God uses in bringing kids to make their faith their own; but I do know that a parent\u2014who isn\u2019t living it but is pointing his kids to it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is an obstacle at that point. How can he impart something he doesn\u2019t possess at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ll let our listeners know\u2014that was you, 20 years ago, talking about the importance of parents walking the talk. We see the surveys today\u2014the kids who are walking away from the faith\u2014the number one thing they\u2019re saying is: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t real at home. My parents talked about it, but they didn\u2019t live it.\u201d Nothing will turn a kid sour to the gospel like a hypocritical parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking of a guy, who I was in a Bible study with, who shared this story that had happened the previous Saturday with his, I think, young teenager\u201413- or 14-year-old son. The phone rang, and it was for the father. The teenager said: \u201cHey Dad! It\u2019s for you.\u201d He said, \u201cTell them I\u2019m asleep.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe teenager kind of had his hand over the mouthpiece and goes, \u201cBut Dad, you\u2019re not asleep.\u201d The dad goes: \u201cOh here! Give me that phone!\u201d Well, what did the father just say to his son? \u201cDo as I say; don\u2019t do as I do.\u201d He just modeled the wrong thing for his teenager. So, what\u2019s the teenager going to do when he\u2019s caught in a pickle? Will he be tempted to lie? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone has said, \u201cYour life can be the doorway through which sin gains entrance into your home.\u201d I\u2019ve always liked that quote, even though it\u2019s kind of cutting; because it puts the responsibility where it belongs on us, as parents, to make sure our lives aren\u2019t necessarily perfect\u2014we\u2019re not going to do it perfectly\u2014but when we fail, we have to have the ability to repent. As I said there, in that previous clip, my children heard me admit more than once: \u201cYour mom and I are having an argument, and we\u2019re going to settle this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m wrong\u2014I\u2019ve raised my voice. I asked her to forgive me. Just\u2014we\u2019ll work it out. We\u2019re not going anywhere; okay?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Those are the moments that authenticate. I think\u2014I think they authenticate your faith, if you\u2019re <em>real<\/em> about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A dad can go back\u2014like the one you described\u2014can go back to his son, later, and say: \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have asked you to lie for me. That was wrong. Will you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cforgive me for putting you in that position?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not too late, at that point, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At that point, you\u2019re modeling the gospel\u2014you\u2019re saying: \u201cGod forgives us. I\u2019m asking you to forgive me. Let\u2019s make this right.\u201d You teach your child that we all sin and there is forgiveness in Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Pride is an interesting thing\u2014it will keep us from admitting we\u2019re wrong. In the process, we\u2019re passing on the wrong picture to our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We had a guest, who described this phenomenon of\u2014James calls it double mindedness\u2014where you say one thing but your life doesn\u2019t reflect what you\u2019re saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKen Hemphill, who is an author and a speaker, described that as Narnia Christianity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you talk about nominal Christians, you\u2019re not just talking about Christmas and Easter Christians; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken:<\/strong> No; no. Here was the thing that <em>stunned<\/em> us in this study\u2014this was a national study\u2014<em>huge<\/em> study. When they used \u201cnominal\u201d\u2014we oftentimes, if we\u2019re church folks, we kind of think about that Easter guy and maybe once-a-month kind of show up\u2014but they were talking about people that were engaged\u2014they were talking about Sunday school teachers, and deacons, and elders. They were <em>in<\/em> church, but the fact was\u2014church didn\u2019t\u2014never transitioned to being in the home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe image I\u2019ve used\u2014that people have picked up on is\u2014it\u2019s kind of a Narnia Christianity. These kids go to church\u2014they step through a door in a wardrobe somewhere, and they enter church world. These kids would say, \u201cI believe the Bible is true\u201d; but they didn\u2019t relate the Bible to real world and real history. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey would see that their parents come home from church\u2014they may, in fact, dissect the pastor on the way home; now, they stood at door and said, \u201cGreat sermon!\u201d But on the way, they\u2019ve devoured him once again. They get home\u2014the way they treat their kids \/ the way they treat their business employees does not connect with anything they heard from the pulpit. What has happened is\u2014these evangelical teenagers, have partitioned life\u2014they go to Narnia\u2014go through the wardrobe \/ go into this unreal world\u2014then they come back to the rest of the world. That\u2019s the danger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s so important for our faith to be\u2014well, the Bible calls it a living faith. It\u2019s not a part-time faith \/ it\u2019s not a compartmentalized faith\u2014it is a consuming faith, and it reprioritizes everything in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, you know, you speak at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe audiences that are coming are younger and younger to our conference\u2014almost \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t50 percent are 39 and under\u2014that are coming to our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaways. I think a part of why they\u2019re coming is because they really want to know: \u201cWhat does an authentic relationship between a husband and a wife look like? Talk to me straight about it. Talk to me about how you handle failure\u2014how you do repent to God but, also, to your spouse in a relationship.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I think a lot of parents don\u2019t realize\u2014they\u2019ve got a chance to perform the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> every day in front of their kids, showing them how two imperfect people disappoint each other \/ don\u2019t meet expectations, but who turn to their spouse and say, \u201cWill you forgive me for being short?\u201d\u2014like I did day before yesterday with Barbara\u2014none of my kids were there\u2014[Laughter]\u2014they\u2019re gone now. I used to do that when they were there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome people say, \u201cWell, you\u2019re diminishing yourself if you\u2019re admitting a failure.\u201d I view it just the opposite. I think your kids are looking for the real deal. Now the question is: \u201cAre you willing to get real?\u201d\u2014first of all, with God\u2014because it can\u2019t\u2019 be just for the kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It has to be a real relationship with Almighty God, where you\u2019re saying, \u201cYou know, God, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d A good question for every parent listening\u2014and for that matter, every single person \/ every married person that doesn\u2019t have kids yet\u2014is: \u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you asked God to forgive you?\u201d or \u201c\u2026you confessed a sin?\u2019 or \u201c\u2026you admitted to Him you\u2019d done something wrong? When\u2019s the last time you did that?\u201d I think the Christian life is a process of admitting those things, as they occur \/ staying in a right relationship with God, and teaching your kids to do the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We had a couple of guests, who joined us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, a while back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the daughter, Jessica Thompson, along with her mother, Elyse Fitzpatrick. Jessica told us that she had been faking her faith during her high school years and into college. Her mom said: \u201cI had no idea. I thought what we were seeing in her was genuine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> When she came home that night from Bible college and she said to me, \u201cMom, I got saved today,\u201d I\u2014It didn\u2019t even <em>register<\/em> in my mind what she was saying. It was <em>shocking<\/em> to me that, all these years, this girl\u2014who, when she was in kindergarten, won Miss Christian Character; she went on mission trips; she was in the youth group; one of the leaders of youth group in Bible college\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014all the time, faking it; because she wanted my approval and the approval of the family\u2014coming from a ministry family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> \u2014the approval of the family\u2014and I was utterly <em>astounded<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you know, when you were faking it, that you were faking it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes; I did. For sure, I knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you have doubts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> I mean, I don\u2019t even know if I thought that deeply about it to be real honest. I think I thought, \u201cThis is what everybody else is doing, and that\u2019s fine; and I don\u2019t want people bothering me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ll play the game.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ll play the game. I will play the game\u2014I will get all the awards and everybody will love me.\u201d Yes, that\u2019s more of where I was at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I think any parent has asked themselves the question, as they\u2019ve looked at an obedient \/ compliant son or daughter: \u201cIs this child faking something here? Are they just saying, \u2018Yes, Mom,\u2019 \/ \u2018Yes, Dad,\u2019 until they can get out of the house and then are they going to go the opposite direction?\u201d We thought that with some of our kids\u2014we thought, \u201cAre they just stringing us on until they\u2019re 18 and off at college and, then, we\u2019re going to see what\u2019s really going on in their lives?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what about you\u2014did you fake it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, I wasn\u2019t it first\u2014so it wasn\u2019t that I was faking my faith \/ I was faking being a good kid\u2014but every good kid is faking being a good kid, because every good kid has got a little larceny working. Don\u2019t you think? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Like the test?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like the Latin test.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But it is just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re brilliant in Latin; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You want a little true confession here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This will be good\u2014maybe your teacher is listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; Mrs. Lau has since gone on to her reward. [Laughter] She never knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If she had you in her class, she needed a reward. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She did need a reward. I was not studying hard in Latin, and it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it does not come by osmosis. You must study to do well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So how did you pass the class, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Somebody called me right before the final and said: \u201cI\u2019ve got the test for tomorrow. Do you want to come study the test?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I went and I\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014I studied the test. Then later, my mom said, \u201cI\u2019ve been telling you, all semester, you would get better grades if you\u2019d study with your friends.\u201d I didn\u2019t have the heart to tell my mom the reason I got a good grade was because I knew the answers to the test before I went in. So, yes, I cheated in high school \/ I lied in high school; but that\u2019s true for everybody; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it is, Bob. Who hasn\u2019t faked it, going to church?\u2014where you\u2019ve had an argument <em>on your<\/em> way to church [Laughter] with your spouse or with your kids. Maybe you\u2019ve been somewhat of a Grinch\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, a grumpy human being\u2014you walk in: \u201cOh, God bless you, pastor. It\u2019s good to see you. Isn\u2019t God good?\u201d You\u2019ve\u2014you know\u2014there\u2019s a lot\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014lot of faking going on\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014lot of faking it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014whole lot of faking going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014that takes place. Yet, with our kids, what\u2019s the truth?\u2014they see it. So, here\u2019s the truth\u2014If you fake it in front of your kids, you\u2019re inviting <em>them<\/em>, I think, to fake it back to you\u2014but also with God. That\u2019s why we\u2019re losing \/ a part of the reason why, I think, we\u2019re losing a generation of young people, who graduate from high school \/ college and aren\u2019t\u2019 showing back up at church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s one final story that we want our listeners to hear that I think will be a great encouragement for parents who are trying to be faithful as they raise their children. In fact, Dr. Don Whitney, who teaches at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, was a guest, not long ago, on FamilyLife <em>Today<\/em>. He shared a great story about how he had seen his faithfulness rewarded at his daughter\u2019s graduation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> At the Christian school, where she graduated, it was the tradition for the parents to present the diploma to their child. Then, they would make some remarks, encouraging the child, and congratulating them as a graduate, and blessing them there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the graduate would, in turn, speak some prepared remarks to the parents, thanking them and so forth. My daughter thanked my wife and said a number of very precious things to her. Then, she turned to me and she began by saying how much family worship had meant to her. But she never got finished; because she just collapsed on my shoulder, in cap and gown, in tears. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, I\u2019m not exaggerating when I say, \u201cShe wept harder than I had seen her since she was a preschooler.\u201d The picture of us, together, is my favorite picture of the two of us. She gave me, later, the transcript of what she had prepared; and it was thanking me for what family worship had meant to her. Now, lest your listeners misunderstand\u2014they may think that that means, when we had family worship, she sat in rapt attention, with her hands folded, and some cherubic look on her face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; she actually\u2014I read what she said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt actually, sounded like you didn\u2019t miss a day in her life since the time she was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> Well, her memory was off there. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> But you know what? In the <em>thousands<\/em> of nights that led up to that graduation, you know what it was actually like? I mean, not <em>one<\/em> time <em>ever<\/em> would I have walked away from family worship, saying [in an authoritative voice]: \u201cOh, the Spirit of God came in great power upon us tonight. We\u2019re on our faces before God. The Spirit\u2019s presence was just atmospheric in our home.\u201d <em>Never<\/em> would I have said that. Most of the time, I would have walked away, saying: \u201cI wonder if that did any good, [Laughter] whatsoever. I wonder if anything happened.\u201d There was <em>nothing<\/em> remarkable, <em>ever<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You wondered if they listened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> Exactly! You know what it\u2019s like until this day? I mean, she\u2019s married and has her first child of her own now. And to this day, when they come home, we have family worship in our home. You know what it\u2019s like? \u201cHey, would y\u2019all put your phone down please? We\u2019re trying to have family worship. Would y\u2019all listen up? I\u2019m trying to read the Bible here.\u201d That\u2019s the way it always was \/ that\u2019s the way it always is. When you have a family in the family room, doing family worship, they do what families do in the family room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>24:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe three-year-olds are rolling around on the floor, and they\u2019re being real families. Yet, you do this, night after night \/ year after year, and the Word does its work. God may do things that you never <em>imagined<\/em> He was doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But the lesson is\u2014you didn\u2019t quit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; didn\u2019t quit. You know, the Bible says we\u2019re raising \u201coaks of righteousness.\u201d You don\u2019t grow an oak with an occasional brush into the soil and an occasional brush with water. Jessica Thompson says there is a danger when you\u2019re raising that kind of child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Being a good kid doesn\u2019t equal being a Christian. I think there is a way to talk to kids, telling them over and over again: \u201cYour goodness will <em>never<\/em> be good enough. You need the goodness of Jesus Christ. You need His righteousness alone to stand before a Holy God.\u201d So, to tell your kids, \u201cPut your own goodness away and trust and rest in the goodness of Jesus Christ on your behalf.\u201d That\u2019s a message that our kids need to hear so that we\u2019re not raising Pharisees and legalists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, April 18<sup>th<\/sup>. Are your kids getting the right message from you, as you raise them to love and obey Jesus? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about our kids\u2019 spiritual formation today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. We were talking, earlier, about a survey that we had done a number of years ago\u2014a really significant survey. We talked to more than a 100,000 people; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: We were asking them all kind of questions about marriage and family. One of the questions was, \u201cWhere do you need the most help in your parenting?\u201d The answer that came back was, \u201cIt\u2019s really the spiritual development \/ the spiritual formation of our kids where we feel like we need help.\u201d\u00a0 So, as a ministry, we\u2019ve been focused, over the years, in trying to make that a strong part of what we provide for moms and dads\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014whether it\u2019s through resources like the Resurrection Eggs<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014that were just recently used by a lot of families, coming up to the Easter holiday\u2014or resources like <em>Passport to Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and <em>Passport to Identity<\/em>\u2122 used with teens. We\u2019ve been trying to take real life events that we all go through and say, \u201cIs there a way to use this as a springboard for a spiritual conversation?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; in fact, I don\u2019t think they\u2019ll mind me saying this; but we\u2019ve been focused on the family. [Laughter] Jim Daly will love that\u2014and that he got some press, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They\u2019ve been focused on the family as well. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They have; no doubt about it. [Laughter] But that\u2019s what a parent\u2019s assignment is\u2014you are to introduce your son or daughter to who God is. You need to understand they are going to get their first glimpses of who God is from you,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and your spouse, and your family. Make sure you are being intentional about doing a good job of coming out of the Bible and making sure the God you are introducing them to is the God of the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have often quoted Psalm 78, which is a Psalm about passing on a spiritual legacy. I\u2019ve heard you say the assignment for parents is to tell your children the truth about who God is; but then, also come along and tell them about how your own history \/ your own life has been marked by God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: Yes; you don\u2019t want to just pass on truth. You want to pass on your <em>experience<\/em> of who God is that is based on the truth of Scripture. The command there in Psalm 78 is for us to do both\u2014\u2014give them the precepts, give them the commandments, teach them the very essence of what the Bible is talking about in our character formation\u2014choosing what\u2019s right \/ not what\u2019s wrong; being wise \/ not a fool\u2014yet, at the same time, to pass on how you experienced God in the marketplace today \/ how you experienced God on another day, other than just Sunday, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where Christian parent\u2019s, I think, need to become much more intentional and purposeful in letting kids into the interior \/ into their souls about how they are finding God every day and how God\u2019s using them is some of the situations that they\u2019re in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Later this year, we\u2019re going to be celebrating our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Our program went on the air in November of 1992. As we head up to that 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday celebration, we have been taking topics\u2014like the spiritual development of your children\u2014and going back and finding people who have spoken on that subject over the past 25 years \/ pulled out some of the significant statements people shared with us during that time period. One of the things that you shared, years ago, on this subject is something that I\u2019ve seen in surveys today. A lot of kids today, growing up in Christian homes, are hitting the teen years or heading off to college and rejecting their Christian background. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things you said, years ago, was: \u201cIt\u2019s vital for a mom and dad\u2019s faith to be authentic if we want our children\u2019s faith to be authentic.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to tell you how long ago this was said; but it points out to the timeless truths of Scripture, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You can talk about the Bible, you can teach the Bible, you can have kids memorize verses from the Bible; but, if your life is not living the life in front of them that is <em>obedient<\/em> to the Bible and the God of the Bible, then it\u2019s contradictory\u2014they\u2019re getting a mixed signal. I think one of the tragedies today is that Christian parents send this mixed signal to their kids, thinking that they\u2019re doing the right thing\u2014by taking them to youth group, taking them to church, getting them in a Bible Study\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014while the parents are making choices that are contrary to the Book the kids are reading. The kids are reading it, and they\u2019re looking at their parents\u2019 lives; and the parent\u2019s life is not authenticating the Book they\u2019re reading. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what God wants of us, as parents\u2014he wants us to model \/ to demonstrate the Book in front of our kids. That means admitting our sins, admitting our faults, and confessing our sins to our kids. Our kids have seen Barbara and they\u2019ve seen me come to them and say: \u201cI\u2019m sorry. Will you forgive me? The Lord convicted me that I spoke harshly to you,\u201d\u00a0 \u201c\u2026I spoke out of anger,\u201d or \u201c\u2026I didn\u2019t have the right attitude to you in that conversation.\u201d They\u2019ve heard that, repeatedly, over the years. And you know\u2014I don\u2019t know, Bob, what God uses in bringing kids to make their faith their own; but I do know that a parent\u2014who isn\u2019t living it but is pointing his kids to it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is an obstacle at that point. How can he impart something he doesn\u2019t possess at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ll let our listeners know\u2014that was you, 20 years ago, talking about the importance of parents walking the talk. We see the surveys today\u2014the kids who are walking away from the faith\u2014the number one thing they\u2019re saying is: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t real at home. My parents talked about it, but they didn\u2019t live it.\u201d Nothing will turn a kid sour to the gospel like a hypocritical parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking of a guy, who I was in a Bible study with, who shared this story that had happened the previous Saturday with his, I think, young teenager\u201413- or 14-year-old son. The phone rang, and it was for the father. The teenager said: \u201cHey Dad! It\u2019s for you.\u201d He said, \u201cTell them I\u2019m asleep.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe teenager kind of had his hand over the mouthpiece and goes, \u201cBut Dad, you\u2019re not asleep.\u201d The dad goes: \u201cOh here! Give me that phone!\u201d Well, what did the father just say to his son? \u201cDo as I say; don\u2019t do as I do.\u201d He just modeled the wrong thing for his teenager. So, what\u2019s the teenager going to do when he\u2019s caught in a pickle? Will he be tempted to lie? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone has said, \u201cYour life can be the doorway through which sin gains entrance into your home.\u201d I\u2019ve always liked that quote, even though it\u2019s kind of cutting; because it puts the responsibility where it belongs on us, as parents, to make sure our lives aren\u2019t necessarily perfect\u2014we\u2019re not going to do it perfectly\u2014but when we fail, we have to have the ability to repent. As I said there, in that previous clip, my children heard me admit more than once: \u201cYour mom and I are having an argument, and we\u2019re going to settle this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m wrong\u2014I\u2019ve raised my voice. I asked her to forgive me. Just\u2014we\u2019ll work it out. We\u2019re not going anywhere; okay?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Those are the moments that authenticate. I think\u2014I think they authenticate your faith, if you\u2019re <em>real<\/em> about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A dad can go back\u2014like the one you described\u2014can go back to his son, later, and say: \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have asked you to lie for me. That was wrong. Will you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cforgive me for putting you in that position?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not too late, at that point, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At that point, you\u2019re modeling the gospel\u2014you\u2019re saying: \u201cGod forgives us. I\u2019m asking you to forgive me. Let\u2019s make this right.\u201d You teach your child that we all sin and there is forgiveness in Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Pride is an interesting thing\u2014it will keep us from admitting we\u2019re wrong. In the process, we\u2019re passing on the wrong picture to our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We had a guest, who described this phenomenon of\u2014James calls it double mindedness\u2014where you say one thing but your life doesn\u2019t reflect what you\u2019re saying.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKen Hemphill, who is an author and a speaker, described that as Narnia Christianity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you talk about nominal Christians, you\u2019re not just talking about Christmas and Easter Christians; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ken:<\/strong> No; no. Here was the thing that <em>stunned<\/em> us in this study\u2014this was a national study\u2014<em>huge<\/em> study. When they used \u201cnominal\u201d\u2014we oftentimes, if we\u2019re church folks, we kind of think about that Easter guy and maybe once-a-month kind of show up\u2014but they were talking about people that were engaged\u2014they were talking about Sunday school teachers, and deacons, and elders. They were <em>in<\/em> church, but the fact was\u2014church didn\u2019t\u2014never transitioned to being in the home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe image I\u2019ve used\u2014that people have picked up on is\u2014it\u2019s kind of a Narnia Christianity. These kids go to church\u2014they step through a door in a wardrobe somewhere, and they enter church world. These kids would say, \u201cI believe the Bible is true\u201d; but they didn\u2019t relate the Bible to real world and real history. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey would see that their parents come home from church\u2014they may, in fact, dissect the pastor on the way home; now, they stood at door and said, \u201cGreat sermon!\u201d But on the way, they\u2019ve devoured him once again. They get home\u2014the way they treat their kids \/ the way they treat their business employees does not connect with anything they heard from the pulpit. What has happened is\u2014these evangelical teenagers, have partitioned life\u2014they go to Narnia\u2014go through the wardrobe \/ go into this unreal world\u2014then they come back to the rest of the world. That\u2019s the danger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s so important for our faith to be\u2014well, the Bible calls it a living faith. It\u2019s not a part-time faith \/ it\u2019s not a compartmentalized faith\u2014it is a consuming faith, and it reprioritizes everything in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, you know, you speak at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe audiences that are coming are younger and younger to our conference\u2014almost \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t50 percent are 39 and under\u2014that are coming to our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaways. I think a part of why they\u2019re coming is because they really want to know: \u201cWhat does an authentic relationship between a husband and a wife look like? Talk to me straight about it. Talk to me about how you handle failure\u2014how you do repent to God but, also, to your spouse in a relationship.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I think a lot of parents don\u2019t realize\u2014they\u2019ve got a chance to perform the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> every day in front of their kids, showing them how two imperfect people disappoint each other \/ don\u2019t meet expectations, but who turn to their spouse and say, \u201cWill you forgive me for being short?\u201d\u2014like I did day before yesterday with Barbara\u2014none of my kids were there\u2014[Laughter]\u2014they\u2019re gone now. I used to do that when they were there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome people say, \u201cWell, you\u2019re diminishing yourself if you\u2019re admitting a failure.\u201d I view it just the opposite. I think your kids are looking for the real deal. Now the question is: \u201cAre you willing to get real?\u201d\u2014first of all, with God\u2014because it can\u2019t\u2019 be just for the kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It has to be a real relationship with Almighty God, where you\u2019re saying, \u201cYou know, God, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d A good question for every parent listening\u2014and for that matter, every single person \/ every married person that doesn\u2019t have kids yet\u2014is: \u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you asked God to forgive you?\u201d or \u201c\u2026you confessed a sin?\u2019 or \u201c\u2026you admitted to Him you\u2019d done something wrong? When\u2019s the last time you did that?\u201d I think the Christian life is a process of admitting those things, as they occur \/ staying in a right relationship with God, and teaching your kids to do the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We had a couple of guests, who joined us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, a while back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the daughter, Jessica Thompson, along with her mother, Elyse Fitzpatrick. Jessica told us that she had been faking her faith during her high school years and into college. Her mom said: \u201cI had no idea. I thought what we were seeing in her was genuine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> When she came home that night from Bible college and she said to me, \u201cMom, I got saved today,\u201d I\u2014It didn\u2019t even <em>register<\/em> in my mind what she was saying. It was <em>shocking<\/em> to me that, all these years, this girl\u2014who, when she was in kindergarten, won Miss Christian Character; she went on mission trips; she was in the youth group; one of the leaders of youth group in Bible college\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014all the time, faking it; because she wanted my approval and the approval of the family\u2014coming from a ministry family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elyse:<\/strong> \u2014the approval of the family\u2014and I was utterly <em>astounded<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Did you know, when you were faking it, that you were faking it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> Yes; I did. For sure, I knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you have doubts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> I mean, I don\u2019t even know if I thought that deeply about it to be real honest. I think I thought, \u201cThis is what everybody else is doing, and that\u2019s fine; and I don\u2019t want people bothering me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ll play the game.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jessica:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ll play the game. I will play the game\u2014I will get all the awards and everybody will love me.\u201d Yes, that\u2019s more of where I was at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I think any parent has asked themselves the question, as they\u2019ve looked at an obedient \/ compliant son or daughter: \u201cIs this child faking something here? Are they just saying, \u2018Yes, Mom,\u2019 \/ \u2018Yes, Dad,\u2019 until they can get out of the house and then are they going to go the opposite direction?\u201d We thought that with some of our kids\u2014we thought, \u201cAre they just stringing us on until they\u2019re 18 and off at college and, then, we\u2019re going to see what\u2019s really going on in their lives?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what about you\u2014did you fake it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, I wasn\u2019t it first\u2014so it wasn\u2019t that I was faking my faith \/ I was faking being a good kid\u2014but every good kid is faking being a good kid, because every good kid has got a little larceny working. Don\u2019t you think? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Like the test?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like the Latin test.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But it is just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re brilliant in Latin; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You want a little true confession here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This will be good\u2014maybe your teacher is listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; Mrs. Lau has since gone on to her reward. [Laughter] She never knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If she had you in her class, she needed a reward. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She did need a reward. I was not studying hard in Latin, and it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it does not come by osmosis. You must study to do well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So how did you pass the class, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Somebody called me right before the final and said: \u201cI\u2019ve got the test for tomorrow. Do you want to come study the test?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I went and I\u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014I studied the test. Then later, my mom said, \u201cI\u2019ve been telling you, all semester, you would get better grades if you\u2019d study with your friends.\u201d I didn\u2019t have the heart to tell my mom the reason I got a good grade was because I knew the answers to the test before I went in. So, yes, I cheated in high school \/ I lied in high school; but that\u2019s true for everybody; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it is, Bob. Who hasn\u2019t faked it, going to church?\u2014where you\u2019ve had an argument <em>on your<\/em> way to church [Laughter] with your spouse or with your kids. Maybe you\u2019ve been somewhat of a Grinch\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, a grumpy human being\u2014you walk in: \u201cOh, God bless you, pastor. It\u2019s good to see you. Isn\u2019t God good?\u201d You\u2019ve\u2014you know\u2014there\u2019s a lot\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014lot of faking going on\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014lot of faking it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014whole lot of faking going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014that takes place. Yet, with our kids, what\u2019s the truth?\u2014they see it. So, here\u2019s the truth\u2014If you fake it in front of your kids, you\u2019re inviting <em>them<\/em>, I think, to fake it back to you\u2014but also with God. That\u2019s why we\u2019re losing \/ a part of the reason why, I think, we\u2019re losing a generation of young people, who graduate from high school \/ college and aren\u2019t\u2019 showing back up at church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s one final story that we want our listeners to hear that I think will be a great encouragement for parents who are trying to be faithful as they raise their children. I just encourage you to find something that you can start using at home to supplement what you may already be doing. In fact, Dr. Don Whitney, who teaches at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, was a guest, not long ago, on FamilyLife <em>Today<\/em>. He shared a great story about how he had seen his faithfulness rewarded at his daughter\u2019s graduation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> At the Christian school, where she graduated, it was the tradition for the parents to present the diploma to their child. Then, they would make some remarks, encouraging the child, and congratulating them as a graduate, and blessing them there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen the graduate would, in turn, speak some prepared remarks to the parents, thanking them and so forth. My daughter thanked my wife and said a number of very precious things to her. Then, she turned to me and she began by saying how much family worship had meant to her. But she never got finished; because she just collapsed on my shoulder, in cap and gown, in tears. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, I\u2019m not exaggerating when I say, \u201cShe wept harder than I had seen her since she was a preschooler.\u201d The picture of us, together, is my favorite picture of the two of us. She gave me, later, the transcript of what she had prepared; and it was thanking me for what family worship had meant to her. Now, lest your listeners misunderstand\u2014they may think that that means, when we had family worship, she sat in rapt attention, with her hands folded, and some cherubic look on her face.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; she actually\u2014I read what she said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt actually, sounded like you didn\u2019t miss a day in her life since the time she was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> Well, her memory was off there. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> But you know what? In the <em>thousands<\/em> of nights that led up to that graduation, you know what it was actually like? I mean, not <em>one<\/em> time <em>ever<\/em> would I have walked away from family worship, saying [in an authoritative voice]: \u201cOh, the Spirit of God came in great power upon us tonight. We\u2019re on our faces before God. The Spirit\u2019s presence was just atmospheric in our home.\u201d <em>Never<\/em> would I have said that. Most of the time, I would have walked away, saying: \u201cI wonder if that did any good, [Laughter] whatsoever. I wonder if anything happened.\u201d There was <em>nothing<\/em> remarkable, <em>ever<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You wondered if they listened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> Exactly! You know what it\u2019s like until this day? I mean, she\u2019s married and has her first child of her own now. And to this day, when they come home, we have family worship in our home. You know what it\u2019s like? \u201cHey, would y\u2019all put your phone down please? We\u2019re trying to have family worship. Would y\u2019all listen up? I\u2019m trying to read the Bible here.\u201d That\u2019s the way it always was \/ that\u2019s the way it always is. When you have a family in the family room, doing family worship, they do what families do in the family room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>24:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe three-year-olds are rolling around on the floor, and they\u2019re being real families. Yet, you do this, night after night \/ year after year, and the Word does its work. God may do things that you never <em>imagined<\/em> He was doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But the lesson is\u2014you didn\u2019t quit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Don:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; didn\u2019t quit. You know, the Bible says we\u2019re raising \u201coaks of righteousness.\u201d You don\u2019t grow an oak with an occasional brush into the soil and an occasional brush with water.
