The countdown is on\u2014Easter is just around the corner. We\u2019ve been trying this week to alert moms and dads to the opportunity\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, no; it\u2019s not an alert, Bob. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is imploring, exhorting, challenging, <em>compelling<\/em> moms and dads, husbands and wives, singles\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014grandmas and grandpas too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014grandmas and grandpas\u2014to <em>really<\/em> get out\u2014get it all out and celebrate the <em>message<\/em> of Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your wife Barbara has been with us all week. Welcome back, Barbara.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thank you, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is a season, where, if you are a mom or a dad, you have an opportunity to take advantage of the season and do some discipling with your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s a great opportunity to talk to your kids about why we\u2019re Christians: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhy do we believe this?\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s the most important thing about our faith?\u201d That most important element of our faith is what Jesus accomplished at Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If your kids are out of the home or are grown up, you still have an opportunity with the neighbors, or the mailman, or whoever comes to your door\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014or friends; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you have opportunities to declare your faith, publicly, during the Easter season. You created a banner a couple of years ago to hang on the door at Easter time; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; because if you think about it\u2014at Christmas, we all put up wreaths, we string lights, we do all kinds of things to decorate our homes at Christmas; but there\u2019s very little that we can do that\u2019s actually about Christ at Easter time. So we created this banner. It\u2019s double-sided\u2014one side is sort of burlap brown, and it has a lamb on it and it says, \u201cI am the resurrection and the life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s designed so that you put that side out during Lent or in the days leading up to Easter; and then, on Easter morning, you flip it over. The reverse side is white, and it has a gold crown and a cross; and it says, \u201cHe is risen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think it is fun for families to be able to take that banner, as you celebrate the anticipation of Easter, and then, on Resurrection Sunday, to flip it over and declare to your neighbors, and friends, and people who drive by your home, \u201cHe is risen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, and not only for that day, but to leave it up for weeks. It can stay up until June, for that matter. I mean, the idea is that Easter should change our lives. So if we just have it up for Easter Sunday, then we\u2019re saying to the world, \u201cIt only matters on Easter Sunday.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re not going to put the decorations away on the Monday after Easter? You\u2019re not going to put the candles back in a box?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We don\u2019t for Christmas. How long does your Christmas tree stay up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A few days. I mean, you try to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Past the first of the year?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not at our house; no. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I guess the question is\u2014because this really is a declaration that is not about a day\u2014but it\u2019s about every day: \u201cHow do you make Easter a part of the consciousness of a family throughout the year?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I have four specific ways that I think we can begin to do that. The first one is\u2014I think we need to remember that the resurrection proves that nothing is impossible with God. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Luke 1:37, when Gabriel came to visit Mary. She said, \u201cHow can this be?\u201d and Gabriel said back to her, \u201cNothing is impossible with God.\u201d The cross proves that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when Jesus came alive\u2014when He came out of the tomb \/ when He was resurrected\u2014He did something that nobody had ever done before. So, if God can raise Jesus from the dead \/ if He can come alive, then the things that feel dead to us in our lives\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it may be your marriage is feeling dead; it may be that a relationship is damaged; it may be that your child is struggling\u2014or all kinds of things often feel dead to us in our world or in our lives. That means that that\u2019s not too hard for God to restore that area of your marriage, or that relationship with a prodigal child, or whatever. It may take longer than you\u2019d like\u2014it usually does take longer than we\u2019d like\u2014but the cross \/ the resurrection remind us that nothing is impossible with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the week after Easter, all of us are going to face some things that are challenging. Are we going to give in to despair and discouragement; or are we going to remember the cross and say: \u201cJesus rose from the dead. He\u2019s conquered death, and I believe that God can conquer this situation in my life,\u201d or \u201c\u2026this circumstance in my life\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I, wish all of our listeners knew a former dentist, who works here at FamilyLife\u2014his name is Tim Bell. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTim gave a devotional to all of the managers, and directors, and vice presidents, here at FamilyLife, a number of months ago in honor of his mother, who had recently passed away. He brought a chalkboard that had been a chalkboard that she had written verses on her entire life and had hung them up for the kids to see. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would remind Tim\u2014he said: \u201cWhen I was a boy, she\u2019d point out the verse and say, \u2018Son, are you going to believe that?\u2019\u201d She would gently encourage him to read the verse, hear the promise of God, and to trust God and believe what you\u2019re talking about, Barbara, that nothing is impossible with God. One of the things you\u2019re challenging people to do is get a chalkboard and write this phrase: \u201cNothing will be impossible with God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a really easy thing to do for most families today, because chalkboards are <em>everywhere<\/em>. Every house probably has, at least, one or more than one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement is to get that chalkboard or maybe you have a whiteboard\u2014it doesn\u2019t really matter\u2014but just write that phrase somewhere that you can see it during the week\u2014so that when you or someone in your family feels like life is impossible, because we all feel that way\u2014we can remember that, because of the cross, nothing is too hard and nothing is impossible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s important, tied to this, to keep in mind that this is one of the things that distinguishes what we believe from every other world religion; because every other religious leader died, and was buried, and we know where the tomb is. Jesus is <em>alive<\/em>. The claim that we make that He did, indeed, defeat death and that He is still alive\u2014you stop and think about it\u2014that\u2019s an audacious claim; but if true\u2014and we believe it is true, and we believe there\u2019s evidence for the truth of it\u2014that changes <em>everything<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And if He is who He claimed to be\u2014and by the way, He is\u2014then we must kneel before Him. We must surrender our wills to Him and ask Him how we can become Easter people the other 364 days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, keep in mind that nothing is impossible with God; and remember that, throughout the year, Easter is the evidence of that. What\u2019s another way that we can continue to be Easter people, as Dennis called it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, one of the things that I find so interesting in the four Gospel accounts of Easter Sunday is the response of the different disciples. It illustrates that faith, or believing, is a choice. It\u2019s really interesting\u2014in all four Gospels, that the first people who went to the tomb on Easter morning were women. What\u2019s fascinating to me is that these women believed\u2014they believed that Jesus was, in fact, raised from the dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe angel said it, they saw the tomb was empty, and they believed. They chose to believe that this was true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen they were commanded to go tell the disciples. It says, \u201cWhen the disciples heard that He was alive, as Mary had said, they refused to believe it.\u201d Later, in that same Gospel, when Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples, it said, \u201cHe reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed the reports.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think that\u2019s so telling about our hearts and who we are\u2014that the choice is <em>ours<\/em>. We can be like the women who went to the tomb, and we can readily believe that what God said is true; or we can be like some of the disciples\u2014and it wasn\u2019t all of them\u2014but some of them, who refused to believe. As we look at God\u2019s Word, and as we remember the Easter story, are we going to remember it by faith? Are we going to remember and believe that Jesus is who He says He is and that He does what He claims to do?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because He promised them \/ He told them He was going to come back alive, but they didn\u2019t believe it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I love how the story\u2019s told by John in Chapter 20. He said the first disciple that came to the tomb saw; then Peter ran past him, looked in, and saw. And then he kind of doubled back\u2014and it says of the first disciple, \u201cHe saw and believed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, here\u2019s the question: \u201cHave you been near Christianity and seen and heard about Jesus? Have you looked, and seen, and then contemplated; but still haven\u2019t thrown your hat in the ring yourself? Or have you looked, have you seen Jesus, and then have you believed?\u2014have you committed yourself?\u2014have you surrendered yourself?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the challenge: \u201cWhy go another day, playing church \/ playing religion, being near Christ, but not\u2014as Barbara was talking about and as we\u2019re all exhorted by the Scriptures\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014believing and surrendering to Christ, and getting on with life as God designed it, and being forgiven by Almighty God and being His child?\u201d I\u2019m telling you\u2014it\u2019s an adventure unlike any other on the planet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think this is an important point you\u2019re making here and something that gets lost in our day. You hear about the claim of the resurrection and people say, \u201cWell, that\u2019s something you just have to believe by faith.\u201d What they mean by that is, \u201cYou believe that with an absence of evidence.\u201d Well, that\u2019s not what we\u2019re suggesting. We\u2019re suggesting that it\u2019s, not in the absence of evidence\u2014it\u2019s because the evidence points in that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s important for folks to know this is not a claim that is made with no evidence behind it. We had an opportunity, earlier this year, to see the movie, <em>The Case for Christ<\/em>, where Lee Strobel, the journalist, went about to disprove the resurrection and came to the conclusion that the evidence actually supports that Jesus was raised from the dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you implore people to surrender to Christ, it\u2019s not a blind leap against the evidence; it\u2019s actually because the evidence supports this, and it requires a response on your part.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It actually takes more faith to believe that Jesus <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> who He claimed to be, and that the tomb isn\u2019t empty; because it is, and He\u2019s alive. If He is alive and He can come into your life and transform you, then Barbara\u2019s third point about how to be Easter people the other 364 days of the year comes into play.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the third thought that I have to share is that I think we need to be okay with Jesus turning our world upside down. If you think for a minute about what\u2014not the disciples thought \/ not the women who went to the tomb\u2014but the religious leaders: \u201cWhat did they think about this whole sequence of events that happened?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe religious leaders of that day were probably absolutely panicked. They\u2019d experienced all the same things\u2014they\u2019d seen the sun go dark; they\u2019d experienced the earthquake; many of them were in the Temple when the curtain was torn in half, from top to bottom \/ the Holy of Holies was open for the first time ever. I\u2019m sure they were bewildered to know what to do about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust that part of the experience was enough to upset their world; and then, two days later, they started hearing rumors that Jesus is alive. They\u2019re thinking: \u201cWe thought we killed Him! We thought we did away with Him. We thought we had this all under control.\u201d I think that\u2019s such a good picture of our lives. I think we don\u2019t know what to do when Jesus turns upside down our world\u2014and He does \/ He often does that\u2014because He wants us to know the truth, and He wants us to know Him as He is. Sometimes, He has to turn our world upside down to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I remember when I encountered Christ as a college student, and I was kind of on the fence. I remember counting the cost: \u201cIf I do this, this is going to cost me! I mean, I\u2019m going to have to deny myself, because that\u2019s what a follower of Christ and a disciple of Christ is called to do. It\u2019s not a matter of living for yourself, it\u2019s a matter of living for another\u2014living for the King of kings and Lord of lords.\u201d I literally remember battling through that nausea and surrendering. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look back now, some 50 years later\u2014I can tell you that the adventure of following Christ\u2014the adventure of knowing, even in my imperfections, that I\u2019m somehow stumbling along this journey of faith; and He\u2019s at work in me and through me\u2014I can\u2019t imagine doing life any other way, whether it\u2019s a marriage, a family \/ as imperfect as it is, or my vocation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy would you want to live a life <em>outside<\/em> of what Christ came to do and be a true Easter person?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And yet, we have to acknowledge that what it is that the Bible claims\u2014that Jesus was actually dead and came alive again. We say the evidence supports that, but that\u2019s still hard to believe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We still have moments of doubt. How do we deal with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, another one of my favorite stories in the days after the resurrection is the story of Thomas. We all know Thomas by the descriptor that goes with his name almost every time it\u2019s used, and that is \u201cdoubting Thomas.\u201d The story of Thomas is that Jesus appeared on that Sunday to the women and to some of the other disciples. At one point, He appeared to the disciples as a group; but for some reason Thomas wasn\u2019t there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d been hearing all these reports\u2014 \u201cJesus is alive!\u201d\u2014from different people, but he didn\u2019t believe them. He probably kept hearing them and finally had heard enough; because he said, \u201cI will not believe unless I can put my finger in the nail prints and I can put my hand in His side.\u201d It\u2019s like he\u2019d heard this and heard this, and he just couldn\u2019t take it anymore. He drew a line in the sand; and he said: \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear this anymore. I\u2019m not going to believe unless\u2026\u201d because he doubted. He just couldn\u2019t believe that it was true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I love so much about that story is that I think we all identify with Thomas. We all have our moments of doubt. We all hear things about Jesus; and we go: \u201cI don\u2019t know if that can be true. I don\u2019t know if I can believe that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat Jesus does is\u2014eight days later, the following Sunday after Easter, they\u2019re all together\u2014the disciples are\u2014and this time, Thomas is with them. By then, all of them had seen Him and had believed; and Thomas was the only one who hadn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus appeared in the middle of the room\u2014He didn\u2019t walk in through the door \/ He just appeared. John records this story, and I love this story: \u201cAnd He said, \u2018Thomas, put your finger here and see my hands, and put your hand here and place it in My side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.\u2019\u201d And Thomas immediately answered, \u201cMy Lord and my God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think Thomas\u2019s story is so good for us, because I think we all do that at different times in our lives\u2014we draw a line in the sand: we do that in our marriages; we draw a line in the sand with our kids; political leaders draw lines in the sand and say, \u201cIf you cross this line, this is what\u2019s going to happen.\u201d We do that with God too\u2014we draw lines with Him\u2014we say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to believe unless I see this,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not going to obey unless\u2026\u201d Thomas teaches us that Jesus isn\u2019t put off by that\u2014He loves us anyway\u2014and He knows that our hearts are frail \/ He knows that our faith is weak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, He comes to Thomas; and He invites Thomas to see the reality of who He is. When Thomas does, he believes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014the rest of the story, after Thomas says, \u201cMy Lord and my God,\u201d Jesus said to him: \u201cHave you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That is us. I love that verse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So the question is: \u201cHave you believed? We know you haven\u2019t seen, but have you believed?\u201d Because, as Bob said earlier, the evidence demands a verdict.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>One of the things we talk often about at our church is the need to re-believe the gospel every day; because we can declare our belief one day and, the next day, be wavering. It\u2019s a decision that we make <em>once<\/em>; but it\u2019s a decision we continue to make. Following that initial statement of belief, we have to continue to re-believe the gospel, day in and day out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019d just encourage listeners\u2014if you\u2019ve never read a book like <em>Evidence that Demands a Verdict<\/em> or the book, <em>The Case for Christ<\/em>, by Lee Strobel\u2014that movie is coming out here in another week or two\u2014it\u2019s his story. It\u2019d be a great movie to take listeners to. In fact, we\u2019re going to talk to the screenwriter of that movie on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> next week\u2014so you can tune in for that. I\u2019d encourage you to consider the historical evidence for the reality of the resurrection, because it will bolster your faith. This is a story of the way Easter is practiced in Romania and other countries in eastern Europe\u2014and that is that, on Easter morning, they begin on that day to say, in greeting to one another, \u201cChrist is risen,\u201d and then respond, \u201cChrist is risen indeed.\u201d But what makes what <em>they<\/em> do different than what we do, here in the West, is that they say that, in greeting to one another, throughout the entire 40 days after Easter, until Ascension Day. That\u2019s another very easy, practical way that we can keep the resurrection alive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause, if we come to work the week after Easter, and we greet one another by saying, \u201cChrist is risen,\u201d it\u2019s like: \u201cThat\u2019s right! He is! He\u2019s risen. He\u2019s still risen.\u201d It helps us to not forget the miracle of what Christ did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you think about it\u2014we take 40 days to prepare for the Easter celebration on Resurrection Sunday. It only makes sense that we take 40 days to celebrate the reality that He is, indeed, alive. Bob, Barbara shared with me earlier today\u2014she said, \u201cI don\u2019t think most followers of Christ even know about Ascension Day. They don\u2019t know about the day when Christ was caught up in the clouds, but He promised He\u2019s coming back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He is coming back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that reality should guide everything about our marriage, about our family, everything we do \/ every decision we make\u2014the fact that Jesus is alive and that He is coming back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in fact, it\u2019s Peter who said, \u201cGiven the fact that the world is going to end, and that Jesus will reign, the question is: \u2018How, then, will you live your life [paraphrase of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t2 Peter, Chapter 3]?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere, at FamilyLife, our goal is to help families live their lives in light of eternity \/ to help marriages be lived out with the gospel at the center of them. Welcome back, Barbara.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thank you, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is a season, where, if you are a mom or a dad, you have an opportunity to take advantage of the season and do some discipling with your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s a great opportunity to talk to your kids about why we\u2019re Christians: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhy do we believe this?\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s the most important thing about our faith?\u201d That most important element of our faith is what Jesus accomplished at Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If your kids are out of the home or are grown up, you still have an opportunity with the neighbors, or the mailman, or whoever comes to your door\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014or friends; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you have opportunities to declare your faith, publicly, during the Easter season. You created a banner a couple of years ago to hang on the door at Easter time; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; because if you think about it\u2014at Christmas, we all put up wreaths, we string lights, we do all kinds of things to decorate our homes at Christmas; but there\u2019s very little that we can do that\u2019s actually about Christ at Easter time. So we created this banner. It\u2019s double-sided\u2014one side is sort of burlap brown, and it has a lamb on it and it says, \u201cI am the resurrection and the life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s designed so that you put that side out during Lent or in the days leading up to Easter; and then, on Easter morning, you flip it over. The reverse side is white, and it has a gold crown and a cross; and it says, \u201cHe is risen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think it is fun for families to be able to take that banner, as you celebrate the anticipation of Easter, and then, on Resurrection Sunday, to flip it over and declare to your neighbors, and friends, and people who drive by your home, \u201cHe is risen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, and not only for that day, but to leave it up for weeks. It can stay up until June, for that matter. I mean, the idea is that Easter should change our lives. So if we just have it up for Easter Sunday, then we\u2019re saying to the world, \u201cIt only matters on Easter Sunday.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re not going to put the decorations away on the Monday after Easter? You\u2019re not going to put the candles back in a box?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We don\u2019t for Christmas. How long does your Christmas tree stay up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A few days. I mean, you try to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Past the first of the year?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not at our house; no. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I guess the question is\u2014because this really is a declaration that is not about a day\u2014but it\u2019s about every day: \u201cHow do you make Easter a part of the consciousness of a family throughout the year?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I have four specific ways that I think we can begin to do that. The first one is\u2014I think we need to remember that the resurrection proves that nothing is impossible with God. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Luke 1:37, when Gabriel came to visit Mary. She said, \u201cHow can this be?\u201d and Gabriel said back to her, \u201cNothing is impossible with God.\u201d The cross proves that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when Jesus came alive\u2014when He came out of the tomb \/ when He was resurrected\u2014He did something that nobody had ever done before. So, if God can raise Jesus from the dead \/ if He can come alive, then the things that feel dead to us in our lives\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it may be your marriage is feeling dead; it may be that a relationship is damaged; it may be that your child is struggling\u2014or all kinds of things often feel dead to us in our world or in our lives. That means that that\u2019s not too hard for God to restore that area of your marriage, or that relationship with a prodigal child, or whatever. It may take longer than you\u2019d like\u2014it usually does take longer than we\u2019d like\u2014but the cross \/ the resurrection remind us that nothing is impossible with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the week after Easter, all of us are going to face some things that are challenging. Are we going to give in to despair and discouragement; or are we going to remember the cross and say: \u201cJesus rose from the dead. He\u2019s conquered death, and I believe that God can conquer this situation in my life,\u201d or \u201c\u2026this circumstance in my life\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I, wish all of our listeners knew a former dentist, who works here at FamilyLife\u2014his name is Tim Bell. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTim gave a devotional to all of the managers, and directors, and vice presidents, here at FamilyLife, a number of months ago in honor of his mother, who had recently passed away. He brought a chalkboard that had been a chalkboard that she had written verses on her entire life and had hung them up for the kids to see. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would remind Tim\u2014he said: \u201cWhen I was a boy, she\u2019d point out the verse and say, \u2018Son, are you going to believe that?\u2019\u201d She would gently encourage him to read the verse, hear the promise of God, and to trust God and believe what you\u2019re talking about, Barbara, that nothing is impossible with God. One of the things you\u2019re challenging people to do is get a chalkboard and write this phrase: \u201cNothing will be impossible with God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a really easy thing to do for most families today, because chalkboards are <em>everywhere<\/em>. Every house probably has, at least, one or more than one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement is to get that chalkboard or maybe you have a whiteboard\u2014it doesn\u2019t really matter\u2014but just write that phrase somewhere that you can see it during the week\u2014so that when you or someone in your family feels like life is impossible, because we all feel that way\u2014we can remember that, because of the cross, nothing is too hard and nothing is impossible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s important, tied to this, to keep in mind that this is one of the things that distinguishes what we believe from every other world religion; because every other religious leader died, and was buried, and we know where the tomb is. Jesus is <em>alive<\/em>. The claim that we make that He did, indeed, defeat death and that He is still alive\u2014you stop and think about it\u2014that\u2019s an audacious claim; but if true\u2014and we believe it is true, and we believe there\u2019s evidence for the truth of it\u2014that changes <em>everything<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And if He is who He claimed to be\u2014and by the way, He is\u2014then we must kneel before Him. We must surrender our wills to Him and ask Him how we can become Easter people the other 364 days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, keep in mind that nothing is impossible with God; and remember that, throughout the year, Easter is the evidence of that. What\u2019s another way that we can continue to be Easter people, as Dennis called it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, one of the things that I find so interesting in the four Gospel accounts of Easter Sunday is the response of the different disciples. It illustrates that faith, or believing, is a choice. It\u2019s really interesting\u2014in all four Gospels, that the first people who went to the tomb on Easter morning were women. What\u2019s fascinating to me is that these women believed\u2014they believed that Jesus was, in fact, raised from the dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe angel said it, they saw the tomb was empty, and they believed. They chose to believe that this was true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen they were commanded to go tell the disciples. It says, \u201cWhen the disciples heard that He was alive, as Mary had said, they refused to believe it.\u201d Later, in that same Gospel, when Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples, it said, \u201cHe reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed the reports.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think that\u2019s so telling about our hearts and who we are\u2014that the choice is <em>ours<\/em>. We can be like the women who went to the tomb, and we can readily believe that what God said is true; or we can be like some of the disciples\u2014and it wasn\u2019t all of them\u2014but some of them, who refused to believe. As we look at God\u2019s Word, and as we remember the Easter story, are we going to remember it by faith? Are we going to remember and believe that Jesus is who He says He is and that He does what He claims to do?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because He promised them \/ He told them He was going to come back alive, but they didn\u2019t believe it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I love how the story\u2019s told by John in Chapter 20. He said the first disciple that came to the tomb saw; then Peter ran past him, looked in, and saw. And then he kind of doubled back\u2014and it says of the first disciple, \u201cHe saw and believed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, here\u2019s the question: \u201cHave you been near Christianity and seen and heard about Jesus? Have you looked, and seen, and then contemplated; but still haven\u2019t thrown your hat in the ring yourself? Or have you looked, have you seen Jesus, and then have you believed?\u2014have you committed yourself?\u2014have you surrendered yourself?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the challenge: \u201cWhy go another day, playing church \/ playing religion, being near Christ, but not\u2014as Barbara was talking about and as we\u2019re all exhorted by the Scriptures\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014believing and surrendering to Christ, and getting on with life as God designed it, and being forgiven by Almighty God and being His child?\u201d I\u2019m telling you\u2014it\u2019s an adventure unlike any other on the planet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think this is an important point you\u2019re making here and something that gets lost in our day. You hear about the claim of the resurrection and people say, \u201cWell, that\u2019s something you just have to believe by faith.\u201d What they mean by that is, \u201cYou believe that with an absence of evidence.\u201d Well, that\u2019s not what we\u2019re suggesting. We\u2019re suggesting that it\u2019s, not in the absence of evidence\u2014it\u2019s because the evidence points in that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s important for folks to know this is not a claim that is made with no evidence behind it. We had an opportunity, earlier this year, to see the movie, <em>The Case for Christ<\/em>, where Lee Strobel, the journalist, went about to disprove the resurrection and came to the conclusion that the evidence actually supports that Jesus was raised from the dead. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you implore people to surrender to Christ, it\u2019s not a blind leap against the evidence; it\u2019s actually because the evidence supports this, and it requires a response on your part.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It actually takes more faith to believe that Jesus <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> who He claimed to be, and that the tomb isn\u2019t empty; because it is, and He\u2019s alive. If He is alive and He can come into your life and transform you, then Barbara\u2019s third point about how to be Easter people the other 364 days of the year comes into play.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the third thought that I have to share is that I think we need to be okay with Jesus turning our world upside down. If you think for a minute about what\u2014not the disciples thought \/ not the women who went to the tomb\u2014but the religious leaders: \u201cWhat did they think about this whole sequence of events that happened?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe religious leaders of that day were probably absolutely panicked. They\u2019d experienced all the same things\u2014they\u2019d seen the sun go dark; they\u2019d experienced the earthquake; many of them were in the Temple when the curtain was torn in half, from top to bottom \/ the Holy of Holies was open for the first time ever. I\u2019m sure they were bewildered to know what to do about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust that part of the experience was enough to upset their world; and then, two days later, they started hearing rumors that Jesus is alive. They\u2019re thinking: \u201cWe thought we killed Him! We thought we did away with Him. We thought we had this all under control.\u201d I think that\u2019s such a good picture of our lives. I think we don\u2019t know what to do when Jesus turns upside down our world\u2014and He does \/ He often does that\u2014because He wants us to know the truth, and He wants us to know Him as He is. Sometimes, He has to turn our world upside down to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I remember when I encountered Christ as a college student, and I was kind of on the fence. I remember counting the cost: \u201cIf I do this, this is going to cost me! I mean, I\u2019m going to have to deny myself, because that\u2019s what a follower of Christ and a disciple of Christ is called to do. It\u2019s not a matter of living for yourself, it\u2019s a matter of living for another\u2014living for the King of kings and Lord of lords.\u201d I literally remember battling through that nausea and surrendering. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look back now, some 50 years later\u2014I can tell you that the adventure of following Christ\u2014the adventure of knowing, even in my imperfections, that I\u2019m somehow stumbling along this journey of faith; and He\u2019s at work in me and through me\u2014I can\u2019t imagine doing life any other way, whether it\u2019s a marriage, a family \/ as imperfect as it is, or my vocation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy would you want to live a life <em>outside<\/em> of what Christ came to do and be a true Easter person?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And yet, we have to acknowledge that what it is that the Bible claims\u2014that Jesus was actually dead and came alive again. We say the evidence supports that, but that\u2019s still hard to believe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We still have moments of doubt. How do we deal with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, another one of my favorite stories in the days after the resurrection is the story of Thomas. We all know Thomas by the descriptor that goes with his name almost every time it\u2019s used, and that is \u201cdoubting Thomas.\u201d The story of Thomas is that Jesus appeared on that Sunday to the women and to some of the other disciples. At one point, He appeared to the disciples as a group; but for some reason Thomas wasn\u2019t there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d been hearing all these reports\u2014 \u201cJesus is alive!\u201d\u2014from different people, but he didn\u2019t believe them. He probably kept hearing them and finally had heard enough; because he said, \u201cI will not believe unless I can put my finger in the nail prints and I can put my hand in His side.\u201d It\u2019s like he\u2019d heard this and heard this, and he just couldn\u2019t take it anymore. He drew a line in the sand; and he said: \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear this anymore. I\u2019m not going to believe unless\u2026\u201d because he doubted. He just couldn\u2019t believe that it was true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I love so much about that story is that I think we all identify with Thomas. We all have our moments of doubt. We all hear things about Jesus; and we go: \u201cI don\u2019t know if that can be true. I don\u2019t know if I can believe that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat Jesus does is\u2014eight days later, the following Sunday after Easter, they\u2019re all together\u2014the disciples are\u2014and this time, Thomas is with them. By then, all of them had seen Him and had believed; and Thomas was the only one who hadn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus appeared in the middle of the room\u2014He didn\u2019t walk in through the door \/ He just appeared. John records this story, and I love this story: \u201cAnd He said, \u2018Thomas, put your finger here and see my hands, and put your hand here and place it in My side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.\u2019\u201d And Thomas immediately answered, \u201cMy Lord and my God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think Thomas\u2019s story is so good for us, because I think we all do that at different times in our lives\u2014we draw a line in the sand: we do that in our marriages; we draw a line in the sand with our kids; political leaders draw lines in the sand and say, \u201cIf you cross this line, this is what\u2019s going to happen.\u201d We do that with God too\u2014we draw lines with Him\u2014we say, \u201cI\u2019m not going to believe unless I see this,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not going to obey unless\u2026\u201d Thomas teaches us that Jesus isn\u2019t put off by that\u2014He loves us anyway\u2014and He knows that our hearts are frail \/ He knows that our faith is weak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, He comes to Thomas; and He invites Thomas to see the reality of who He is. When Thomas does, he believes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014the rest of the story, after Thomas says, \u201cMy Lord and my God,\u201d Jesus said to him: \u201cHave you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That is us. I love that verse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So the question is: \u201cHave you believed? We know you haven\u2019t seen, but have you believed?\u201d Because, as Bob said earlier, the evidence demands a verdict.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>One of the things we talk often about at our church is the need to re-believe the gospel every day; because we can declare our belief one day and, the next day, be wavering. Following that initial statement of belief, we have to continue to re-believe the gospel, day in and day out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019d just encourage listeners\u2014if you\u2019ve never read a book like <em>Evidence that Demands a Verdict<\/em> or the book, <em>The Case for Christ<\/em>, by Lee Strobel\u2014that movie is coming out here in another week or two\u2014it\u2019s his story. This is a story of the way Easter is practiced in Romania and other countries in eastern Europe\u2014and that is that, on Easter morning, they begin on that day to say, in greeting to one another, \u201cChrist is risen,\u201d and then respond, \u201cChrist is risen indeed.\u201d But what makes what <em>they<\/em> do different than what we do, here in the West, is that they say that, in greeting to one another, throughout the entire 40 days after Easter, until Ascension Day. That\u2019s another very easy, practical way that we can keep the resurrection alive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause, if we come to work the week after Easter, and we greet one another by saying, \u201cChrist is risen,\u201d it\u2019s like: \u201cThat\u2019s right! He is! He\u2019s risen. He\u2019s still risen.\u201d It helps us to not forget the miracle of what Christ did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you think about it\u2014we take 40 days to prepare for the Easter celebration on Resurrection Sunday. It only makes sense that we take 40 days to celebrate the reality that He is, indeed, alive. Bob, Barbara shared with me earlier today\u2014she said, \u201cI don\u2019t think most followers of Christ even know about Ascension Day.
