It\u2019s rare that we have a chance to have a studio audience joining us when we\u2019re recording a <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>program.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And it\u2019s even more rare that the audience is onboard a cruise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s right. We\u2019re in the middle of the ocean right now\u2014but as listeners are listening\u2014this was back, Valentine\u2019s week, that we were onboard the <em>Love Like You Mean It <\/em>marriage cruise. A number of our listeners joined us for our recording session\u2014welcome! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we also had one of our guest speakers who agreed to join us for this session. I got this actually sent to me this morning; and I thought, \u201cThis is something that I would love to talk to a young pastor, who is pastoring in a college town, and get his input on what I\u2019ve heard.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just so happens we have somebody like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes; Kevin DeYoung joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014welcome back!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Kevin is senior pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan. He and his wife Tricia have been married 15 years and have seven\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Seven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0\u2014count \u2018em\u2014seven\u2014last count. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>Could be eight by the time\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; really! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve written a book that Bob and I were really looking forward to talking with you about\u2014<em>Why We Love the Church<\/em>. You wrote it with Ted Kluck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the reason I wanted to talk about it is because we have a lot of listeners, who listen to <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> as well as many in the audience, who have children that are either approaching adulthood and leaving home, if not already, and they\u2019re puzzled about what\u2019s taking place today in the abandonment of a generation of the church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, listen to this article that came into my email box this morning. The author writes: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrom the depths of my heart I want to love the church. I want to be head over heels for church, like the unshakeable Ned Flanders. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to send global sky-writing airplanes, telling the life-change that happened beneath the steeple. I want to install a police microphone on the top of my car and cruise the streets, screaming to the masses about the magical utopian community of believers waiting for them just down the street. I <em>desperately<\/em> want to feel this way about my church; but I don\u2019t, not even a bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt seems all too often churches are actually causing more damage than good, and the statistics show a staggering number of Millennials have taken note.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere are the statistics\u2014now, you\u2019re not a Millennial \/ you\u2019re a little past Millennial\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0I am a \u201cGen-X-er\u201d I guess; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo 22-35-year-olds\u2014he says this study says only two in ten Americans under the age of 30 believe attending church is important or worthwhile\u2014that\u2019s at an all-time low. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says 59 percent of Millennials raised in church have dropped out; 35 percent of Millennials have an anti-church stance, believing that church does more harm than good; and Millennials are the least likely age group of anyone to attend church, by far.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, there are a lot of things going on. I think those numbers can reflect something important\u2014to the degree that we have those stories in our own church \/ our own families\u2014who want to pay attention. I also think those numbers \/ those doomsday numbers always need to be taken with a little grain of salt. You look at the statistics, and it\u2019s been true for a number of generations. I\u2019m old enough now\u201439 years old\u2014to remember when everything was about the Gen-X-ers leaving the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt does happen that a number of people start to come back as they begin to have kids and they raise families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we don\u2019t want to be presumptuous about it\u2014that\u2019s one thing. It\u2019s also important to realize these <em>losses<\/em> are not true across the board. We don\u2019t want to pat ourselves on the back, as evangelical Christians\u2014but by and large, the number of people in evangelical churches has remained steady \/ in fact, it\u2019s kept up with population growth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of the rise of the \u201cnones\u201d\u2014those who no longer identify with any religion or Christianity\u2014are coming from dropped-out Catholics and from burned-out or dropped-out main-line Christians. I\u2019m not saying we don\u2019t have our own problems\u2014we certainly do\u2014but it\u2019s just to take those statistics with a grain of salt. We always think that the sky is falling, and it may be someone else\u2019s sky over someone else\u2019s house. Now, when it is our sky \/ our own house, we have to pay attention to it. How we respond is, really, even more important than trying to understand to what degree it\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the first thing is\u2014admit where there are faults. I mean, this needs to happen on a level of personal conversation. We can talk about statistics and Millennials; but you know, that\u2019s just generational terms. As long as I\u2019m young enough to get away with this, I just want to say: \u201cThe generational stuff is\u2014sometimes, it\u2019s just garbage.\u201d God doesn\u2019t have to put us all into a box\u2014and you were born in this year and, all of a sudden, you think totally differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, talk to people\u2014talk to your kids, talk to your grandkids, talk to people in your church. Find out who they are \/ what they\u2019re like, and begin this personal conversation about why they\u2019re leaving the church. Maybe they\u2019re leaving a very bad church. Maybe they\u2019re being very selfish. I mean, the response when people say, \u201cWell, the church is filled with hypocrites,\u201d I always have two responses in my head: One is, \u201cWell, then you\u2019d fit right in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or, the better response, maybe, is to say: \u201cYou know what? You don\u2019t even know the half of it. You don\u2019t even know how sinful we really are, in our hearts, but you know what? That\u2019s kind of the point.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re looking for what this author [above] said\u2014some idealistic utopian\u2014where does that exist but in heaven?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Where did we get this idea? It doesn\u2019t exist at a Beyonc\u00e9 concert. Where are they going to find this? You\u2019re going to find it in heaven; and the representation of that heaven here on earth is going to be the church, with all of its imperfections.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You have met, though, disaffected evangelicals\u2014those who grew up in pretty solid churches\u2014and are saying: \u201cThere was just too much emphasis on personal salvation\u2014not enough on social justice \/ not enough on the bigger problems around the world\u2014I mean, the church has ignored sex trafficking,\u201d or \u201cThe church has ignored\u2026\u2014 whatever the cause of the day is. They\u2019re put out, and they don\u2019t want anything to do with the evangelical church as a result.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really depends, again, from church to church. I have met people like that. Sometimes, you want to say with tears, \u201cI\u2019m sorry that you had a bad church experience.\u201d There are bad churches out there \/ there are bad pastors. You listen and you try to love people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there are folks who are leaving evangelicalism and they\u2019re barely hanging onto the last rung before they get all the way to unbelief. They don\u2019t have the words to describe it; and so they describe it with these sort of categories, but it\u2019s often a heart issue that\u2019s wandering from Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, when somebody comes to me\u2014and certainly, there are all sorts of people in a university town who want to talk about social justice\u2014and, \u201cWhat do you guys do about social justice and the least of these?\u201d\u2014and refugees, and the poor. My first instinct is to want to affirm the good things they want to affirm: \u201cOkay; tell me what you\u2019re concerned about. We should be concerned about that as Christians. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTell me what you want to see happen\u2014God\u2019s laid this vision \/ this burden on your heart.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce I can clear some of the undergrowth and understand what we want is probably very similar, we can begin to talk about, \u201cWhere do we find this and what does it look like?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I, personally, think that a tsunami\u2014a cultural tsunami around homosexuality \/ same-sex marriage\u2014hit the church. Honestly, I\u2019m speaking maybe more about myself now than I am generally the church\u2014I don\u2019t think I was ready to know how to express love and grace as this book, the Bible, says. What I had to do is go to school, asking God, \u201cTeach me how to love other\u201d\u2014emphasis <em>other<\/em>\u2014\u201cbroken people, who aren\u2019t like me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the church has been playing catch-up, not knowing exactly how to respond. This generation of young people has a face to homosexuality \/ has a face to same-sex marriage\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and they may be their best friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes; so this cultural tsunami has come ashore. If we position ourselves as the old cultural warriors\u2014there\u2019s a way that we want to fight for what\u2019s\u2014so I\u2019m not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\u2014still stand for the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s right. You know, politics matter; but if we get in that old stance of: \u201cWe have to reclaim America. We have to retake America,\u201d that\u2019s just\u2014first of all, I don\u2019t know that it ever was <em>our<\/em> America. I mean, whose <em>ours<\/em> was it? It didn\u2019t work that well for African-Americans for most of our history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we need to be honest about that. And then we need to understand that people want to hear a vision of Christ and His Kingdom, not America and its kingdom. If we can get past that, and then we can begin to talk to our kids, and grandkids, and Millennials\u2014and what you said, Dennis, is so true\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they want to know, \u201cIs this a church I\u2019d be embarrassed to bring some of these people here?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if they\u2019re embarrassed because of the <em>truth<\/em>, that\u2019s one thing; but if they\u2019re embarrassed because people have this -ic factor\u2014they don\u2019t know how to talk to people or every sermon comes at you like all the bad people are out <em>there<\/em>, instead of talking about our sins\u2014I always say the sins people should hear about in the church most are their own sins. If it is always talking about other people\u2019s sins out there, it\u2019s going to have a certain veneer that\u2019s not going to resonate with folks; and maybe it shouldn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0You wrote a book called <em>What the Bible Has to Say About Homosexuality<\/em>, which, by the way, is one of the books, along with Sam Allberry\u2019s book\u2014and there are others that I recommend to people on this issue\u2014yours is excellent, because the second half just takes every argument and gives a biblical response to it. I\u2019m sure, in a town like East Lansing \/ in a college town, to be the pastor who wrote the book, <em>What the Bible Has to Say About Homosexuality<\/em>, doesn\u2019t win you any favors with the intellectual elite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No; it was eye-opening\u2014I suppose it shouldn\u2019t have been. Even more than the book was a blog post I wrote after the Supreme Court decision. You never know which of those things is going to go viral. I knew it had gone far when I saw our neighbor across the street\u2014and hardly any of our neighbors are Christian or go to church\u2014nice folks, though. We saw on her Facebook page<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014she said something like: \u201cI can\u2019t believe that my neighbor wrote something like this. They seem like such nice people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yes; that is hard; because in a town like ours, we\u2019ve had a number of people\u2014and our kids go to the public school, whether you think that\u2019s good, bad, or otherwise; but they do\u2014and so people will just talk to us and they <em>assume<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey assume, maybe because we\u2019re in the town and we talk like normal people, they will talk to us about how <em>great<\/em> the Supreme Court decision was\u2014they don\u2019t even think to <em>ask<\/em> what our opinion is. They just assume it\u2019s that. So we\u2019ve had some interesting conversations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember a lady at the school\u2014I was saying something about homosexuality and wasn\u2019t preaching \/ I was in a public school setting. She just said: \u201cOh, you\u2019re a pastor; and I have a friend who\u2019s really looking for an open and affirming church. Would your church be a good church for her to go to?\u201d Right in that moment, I think, \u201cHow do I answer that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I said: \u201cWell, I need to be honest. Our church is probably not what you have in mind when you say \u2018open and affirming.\u2019 We believe that the Bible says that that behavior is wrong, but we\u2019re a church that would like to think that we really love anybody who comes, and that they can find a welcoming place, and learn about Jesus and the Bible.\u201d That was my little off-the-cuff spiel, and it didn\u2019t work; but I tried.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You happen to be on a committee for public schools\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0\u2014dealing with some of the issues around gender inclusivity\u2014around same-sex bathrooms \/ transgender bathrooms. You\u2019re kind of the token pastor amidst others. Here\u2019s the question I have for you: \u201cWhat coaching\u2014or what have you learned, from that experience of being surrounded by people who don\u2019t think or believe like you\u2014that could help parents know how to prepare their kids to live their lives in a culture and a generation that do not think like we think, like we think, from the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right. Well, one\u2014you have to know what you believe and be convinced of it <em>before<\/em> you get into that moment. Number two is just being a hard-working kind of person\u2014it is not the gospel\u2014but it can get you somewhere.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, people feel like, \u201cWell, he seems nice, but his views are bigoted\u201d; right?\u2014we want to create that confusion: \u201cThis is not what I thought these people would be like; because he works hard, and she is pretty kind to us, and a good neighbor to be around.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the third\u2014on a wisdom level\u2014is you need to quote that great theologian [Kenny Rogers \/ <em>The Gambler, <\/em>by Don Schlitz, 1978]: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve got to know when to hold \u2018em\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKnow when to fold \u2018em\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKnow when to walk away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just had to realize: \u201cAt any moment, anyone from any viewpoint can be listening to this. I need to think carefully\/strategically: \u2018Is this the hill? Is this what I want to fight on?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I did, in that sort of moment, as I was <em>always<\/em> trying to clarify\u2014like on that committee\u2014\u201cWhat are we voting on right now?\u201d because I had some things I wanted to say; but I didn\u2019t want to say it before I had to say it. I wanted to keep my powder dry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think to equip our children, we want to say: \u201cYou know, it\u2019s not about being duplicitous \/ it\u2019s not about hiding what you believe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut being courageous doesn\u2019t mean you have to download your systematic theology on people every time you\u2019re with them. There\u2019s wisdom to understanding when\u2019s the time to talk about this; because when you have a 30-second sound bite on something that\u2019s controversial\u2014these sexuality issues\u2014it\u2019s probably not going to go well. You need to have some time to develop more what you think.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin, I\u2019d add one thing to what you\u2019re saying. I think today, as never before, we have to train our children to be missional. They need to be about the Father\u2019s business, just like Jesus was. A part of that is, yes, speaking the truth; but it\u2019s speaking the truth\u2014held in tension with grace, and love, and humility that embraces broken people where they live. There\u2019s where the church has a great message for a broken culture\u2014we\u2019re all broken!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; if people you evangelize\u2014and they want to jump in\u2014they want to talk about, \u201cWhat about gay marriage?\u201d\u2014yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to hide what I think about that, but it\u2019s ultimately a lordship of Christ issue. I want to talk to people about Christ. I want to help people realize, just like Paul in Acts, to defend our faith and to evangelize our faith can go together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So on the sex-ed committee at public school, when they turn to you and say, \u201cSo what do you think?\u201d how do you pick the place where you bring Scripture in and bring Jesus in versus the place where you say, \u201cThere\u2019s just not wisdom in the approach that we\u2019re taking here\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s really hard to know how to do that. Certainly, in that context, I wouldn\u2019t\u2014you know, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d I don\u2019t go to Romans 1 in a school board setting \/ public school. What I tried to do\u2014and I don\u2019t know that I did it successfully\u2014was try to make space that our views, as Christians, have legitimacy, and have a place at the table, and are based in\u2014not bigotry\u2014but in good thinking and historical precedence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one thing, strategically, that we do have\u2014if people are willing to be honest, which they often aren\u2019t\u2014is to say, \u201cOkay; you all want to be inclusive,\u201d\u2014university town \/ they all like inclusivity\u2014I say: \u201cOkay; what does it mean to really be inclusive? Are you inclusive of people like us?\u2014are you inclusive? You want to represent the kid with two moms\u2014what about the kid who has a mom with seven kids? That\u2019s not represented in the curriculum here.\u201d You try to angle <em>that<\/em> way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I would try to present people\u2014you know: \u201cIf you think bigotry is coming to conclusions, apart from reason and rationality, then I agree with that. Let\u2019s be <em>thoughtful<\/em>. Look\u2014if we\u2019re really a community\u2014and we really value thinking, and we don\u2019t want to be bigots \/ we want to be reasonable people, then why don\u2019t we step back? Why don\u2019t we hear from both sides of this?\u201d If you want your kids to be well-taught, right, why do you have to be afraid? Why not give them the best arguments that we can think of?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me come back\u2014because we\u2019re running out of time\u2014but I want to be back to the disaffected 23-year-old, who is not going to church on Sunday anymore. Mom and Dad don\u2019t know what to do. They\u2019ve been on their knees about this for a couple of years, since it became clear that they kind of lost this son or daughter during college. They don\u2019t know what to say\u2014whether to prod \/ whether to say nothing. What counsel would you give? What kind of pastoral wisdom would you have for those parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t underestimate what you\u2019ve already poured into them. I think then\u2014as a parent \/ as you parent in a different way now\u2014it\u2019s keeping that bridge open. You don\u2019t want it to be so that, in addition to repenting before Christ to come back to the church\u2014which is what they need to do\u2014that you\u2019re making them shamefaced, swallow, eat crow, come before you and \u201cYou were right, Mom and Dad. I should have been going to church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re not trying to <em>win<\/em> an argument with them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, there are certain things you have to draw the line\u2014maybe: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to live here. You\u2019re not going to have that sort of relationship in our house,\u201d\u2014and I completely support parents doing that. But with the disaffected 20-something Millennial, who\u2019s not going to church, I think parents continue to love \/ they continue to ask questions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, as a kid, feeling like, \u201cMom and Dad, why do you have to ask questions?\u201d And yet, there was that part of me that, if they didn\u2019t, I\u2019d feel like: \u201cWell, don\u2019t you care about me? Isn\u2019t that your job? You\u2019re supposed to ask questions, and I\u2019m supposed to seem like I don\u2019t care.\u201d [Laughter] Don\u2019t underestimate <em>how<\/em> much a child always needs to know that Mom and Dad love him and to tell them that: \u201cI love you. You know what I want, but I love you,\u201d\u2014you keep that open. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen you have to\u2014the Holy Spirit\u2014you are not the Holy Spirit in your child\u2019s life \/ only the Holy Spirit can play that role.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And make the home a safe place where a teenager can come home with doubts and have a receptive audience that doesn\u2019t condemn their doubts but encourages them in the journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0I just look back on my own life\u2014how I literally, as a junior in college, the spiritual lights came on in my life. I literally went on a walk at the University of Arkansas that led me into the church that was the leading church in the state of Arkansas in reaching college students. One fourth of the student body at the University of Arkansas came to that church every year\u2014a student body of 10,000 people \/ 2,500 students came to that church. They were hearing about Jesus Christ around the issues of our day\u2014Him being relevant as never before \/ the One who was a radical and the One who spoke truth. Pray for your kids\u2014that they will stumble into a great church that preaches the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI so appreciate you, Kevin, being a pastor, a dad, a husband, a man in this culture, and doing your best to follow Christ. The author writes: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrom the depths of my heart I want to love the church. I want to be head over heels for church, like the unshakeable Ned Flanders. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to send global sky-writing airplanes, telling the life-change that happened beneath the steeple. I want to install a police microphone on the top of my car and cruise the streets, screaming to the masses about the magical utopian community of believers waiting for them just down the street. I <em>desperately<\/em> want to feel this way about my church; but I don\u2019t, not even a bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt seems all too often churches are actually causing more damage than good, and the statistics show a staggering number of Millennials have taken note.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere are the statistics\u2014now, you\u2019re not a Millennial \/ you\u2019re a little past Millennial\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0I am a \u201cGen-X-er\u201d I guess; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo 22-35-year-olds\u2014he says this study says only two in ten Americans under the age of 30 believe attending church is important or worthwhile\u2014that\u2019s at an all-time low. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says 59 percent of Millennials raised in church have dropped out; 35 percent of Millennials have an anti-church stance, believing that church does more harm than good; and Millennials are the least likely age group of anyone to attend church, by far.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, there are a lot of things going on. I think those numbers can reflect something important\u2014to the degree that we have those stories in our own church \/ our own families\u2014who want to pay attention. I also think those numbers \/ those doomsday numbers always need to be taken with a little grain of salt. You look at the statistics, and it\u2019s been true for a number of generations. I\u2019m old enough now\u201439 years old\u2014to remember when everything was about the Gen-X-ers leaving the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt does happen that a number of people start to come back as they begin to have kids and they raise families. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we don\u2019t want to be presumptuous about it\u2014that\u2019s one thing. It\u2019s also important to realize these <em>losses<\/em> are not true across the board. We don\u2019t want to pat ourselves on the back, as evangelical Christians\u2014but by and large, the number of people in evangelical churches has remained steady \/ in fact, it\u2019s kept up with population growth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of the rise of the \u201cnones\u201d\u2014those who no longer identify with any religion or Christianity\u2014are coming from dropped-out Catholics and from burned-out or dropped-out main-line Christians. I\u2019m not saying we don\u2019t have our own problems\u2014we certainly do\u2014but it\u2019s just to take those statistics with a grain of salt. We always think that the sky is falling, and it may be someone else\u2019s sky over someone else\u2019s house. Now, when it is our sky \/ our own house, we have to pay attention to it. How we respond is, really, even more important than trying to understand to what degree it\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the first thing is\u2014admit where there are faults. I mean, this needs to happen on a level of personal conversation. We can talk about statistics and Millennials; but you know, that\u2019s just generational terms. As long as I\u2019m young enough to get away with this, I just want to say: \u201cThe generational stuff is\u2014sometimes, it\u2019s just garbage.\u201d God doesn\u2019t have to put us all into a box\u2014and you were born in this year and, all of a sudden, you think totally differently. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, talk to people\u2014talk to your kids, talk to your grandkids, talk to people in your church. Find out who they are \/ what they\u2019re like, and begin this personal conversation about why they\u2019re leaving the church. Maybe they\u2019re leaving a very bad church. Maybe they\u2019re being very selfish. I mean, the response when people say, \u201cWell, the church is filled with hypocrites,\u201d I always have two responses in my head: One is, \u201cWell, then you\u2019d fit right in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or, the better response, maybe, is to say: \u201cYou know what? You don\u2019t even know the half of it. You don\u2019t even know how sinful we really are, in our hearts, but you know what? That\u2019s kind of the point.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re looking for what this author [above] said\u2014some idealistic utopian\u2014where does that exist but in heaven?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Where did we get this idea? It doesn\u2019t exist at a Beyonc\u00e9 concert. Where are they going to find this? You\u2019re going to find it in heaven; and the representation of that heaven here on earth is going to be the church, with all of its imperfections.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You have met, though, disaffected evangelicals\u2014those who grew up in pretty solid churches\u2014and are saying: \u201cThere was just too much emphasis on personal salvation\u2014not enough on social justice \/ not enough on the bigger problems around the world\u2014I mean, the church has ignored sex trafficking,\u201d or \u201cThe church has ignored\u2026\u2014 whatever the cause of the day is. They\u2019re put out, and they don\u2019t want anything to do with the evangelical church as a result.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really depends, again, from church to church. I have met people like that. Sometimes, you want to say with tears, \u201cI\u2019m sorry that you had a bad church experience.\u201d There are bad churches out there \/ there are bad pastors. You listen and you try to love people. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there are folks who are leaving evangelicalism and they\u2019re barely hanging onto the last rung before they get all the way to unbelief. They don\u2019t have the words to describe it; and so they describe it with these sort of categories, but it\u2019s often a heart issue that\u2019s wandering from Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, when somebody comes to me\u2014and certainly, there are all sorts of people in a university town who want to talk about social justice\u2014and, \u201cWhat do you guys do about social justice and the least of these?\u201d\u2014and refugees, and the poor. My first instinct is to want to affirm the good things they want to affirm: \u201cOkay; tell me what you\u2019re concerned about. We should be concerned about that as Christians. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTell me what you want to see happen\u2014God\u2019s laid this vision \/ this burden on your heart.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce I can clear some of the undergrowth and understand what we want is probably very similar, we can begin to talk about, \u201cWhere do we find this and what does it look like?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I, personally, think that a tsunami\u2014a cultural tsunami around homosexuality \/ same-sex marriage\u2014hit the church. Honestly, I\u2019m speaking maybe more about myself now than I am generally the church\u2014I don\u2019t think I was ready to know how to express love and grace as this book, the Bible, says. What I had to do is go to school, asking God, \u201cTeach me how to love other\u201d\u2014emphasis <em>other<\/em>\u2014\u201cbroken people, who aren\u2019t like me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the church has been playing catch-up, not knowing exactly how to respond. This generation of young people has a face to homosexuality \/ has a face to same-sex marriage\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and they may be their best friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes; so this cultural tsunami has come ashore. If we position ourselves as the old cultural warriors\u2014there\u2019s a way that we want to fight for what\u2019s\u2014so I\u2019m not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\u2014still stand for the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0That\u2019s right. You know, politics matter; but if we get in that old stance of: \u201cWe have to reclaim America. We have to retake America,\u201d that\u2019s just\u2014first of all, I don\u2019t know that it ever was <em>our<\/em> America. I mean, whose <em>ours<\/em> was it? It didn\u2019t work that well for African-Americans for most of our history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we need to be honest about that. And then we need to understand that people want to hear a vision of Christ and His Kingdom, not America and its kingdom. If we can get past that, and then we can begin to talk to our kids, and grandkids, and Millennials\u2014and what you said, Dennis, is so true\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they want to know, \u201cIs this a church I\u2019d be embarrassed to bring some of these people here?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if they\u2019re embarrassed because of the <em>truth<\/em>, that\u2019s one thing; but if they\u2019re embarrassed because people have this -ic factor\u2014they don\u2019t know how to talk to people or every sermon comes at you like all the bad people are out <em>there<\/em>, instead of talking about our sins\u2014I always say the sins people should hear about in the church most are their own sins. If it is always talking about other people\u2019s sins out there, it\u2019s going to have a certain veneer that\u2019s not going to resonate with folks; and maybe it shouldn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0You wrote a book called <em>What the Bible Has to Say About Homosexuality<\/em>, which, by the way, is one of the books, along with Sam Allberry\u2019s book\u2014and there are others that I recommend to people on this issue\u2014yours is excellent, because the second half just takes every argument and gives a biblical response to it. I\u2019m sure, in a town like East Lansing \/ in a college town, to be the pastor who wrote the book, <em>What the Bible Has to Say About Homosexuality<\/em>, doesn\u2019t win you any favors with the intellectual elite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No; it was eye-opening\u2014I suppose it shouldn\u2019t have been. Even more than the book was a blog post I wrote after the Supreme Court decision. You never know which of those things is going to go viral. I knew it had gone far when I saw our neighbor across the street\u2014and hardly any of our neighbors are Christian or go to church\u2014nice folks, though. We saw on her Facebook page<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014she said something like: \u201cI can\u2019t believe that my neighbor wrote something like this. They seem like such nice people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yes; that is hard; because in a town like ours, we\u2019ve had a number of people\u2014and our kids go to the public school, whether you think that\u2019s good, bad, or otherwise; but they do\u2014and so people will just talk to us and they <em>assume<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey assume, maybe because we\u2019re in the town and we talk like normal people, they will talk to us about how <em>great<\/em> the Supreme Court decision was\u2014they don\u2019t even think to <em>ask<\/em> what our opinion is. They just assume it\u2019s that. So we\u2019ve had some interesting conversations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember a lady at the school\u2014I was saying something about homosexuality and wasn\u2019t preaching \/ I was in a public school setting. She just said: \u201cOh, you\u2019re a pastor; and I have a friend who\u2019s really looking for an open and affirming church. Would your church be a good church for her to go to?\u201d Right in that moment, I think, \u201cHow do I answer that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I said: \u201cWell, I need to be honest. Our church is probably not what you have in mind when you say \u2018open and affirming.\u2019 We believe that the Bible says that that behavior is wrong, but we\u2019re a church that would like to think that we really love anybody who comes, and that they can find a welcoming place, and learn about Jesus and the Bible.\u201d That was my little off-the-cuff spiel, and it didn\u2019t work; but I tried.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You happen to be on a committee for public schools\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0\u2014dealing with some of the issues around gender inclusivity\u2014around same-sex bathrooms \/ transgender bathrooms. You\u2019re kind of the token pastor amidst others. Here\u2019s the question I have for you: \u201cWhat coaching\u2014or what have you learned, from that experience of being surrounded by people who don\u2019t think or believe like you\u2014that could help parents know how to prepare their kids to live their lives in a culture and a generation that do not think like we think, like we think, from the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right. Well, one\u2014you have to know what you believe and be convinced of it <em>before<\/em> you get into that moment. Number two is just being a hard-working kind of person\u2014it is not the gospel\u2014but it can get you somewhere.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, people feel like, \u201cWell, he seems nice, but his views are bigoted\u201d; right?\u2014we want to create that confusion: \u201cThis is not what I thought these people would be like; because he works hard, and she is pretty kind to us, and a good neighbor to be around.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the third\u2014on a wisdom level\u2014is you need to quote that great theologian [Kenny Rogers \/ <em>The Gambler, <\/em>by Don Schlitz, 1978]: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve got to know when to hold \u2018em\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKnow when to fold \u2018em\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKnow when to walk away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just had to realize: \u201cAt any moment, anyone from any viewpoint can be listening to this. I need to think carefully\/strategically: \u2018Is this the hill? Is this what I want to fight on?\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I did, in that sort of moment, as I was <em>always<\/em> trying to clarify\u2014like on that committee\u2014\u201cWhat are we voting on right now?\u201d because I had some things I wanted to say; but I didn\u2019t want to say it before I had to say it. I wanted to keep my powder dry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think to equip our children, we want to say: \u201cYou know, it\u2019s not about being duplicitous \/ it\u2019s not about hiding what you believe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut being courageous doesn\u2019t mean you have to download your systematic theology on people every time you\u2019re with them. There\u2019s wisdom to understanding when\u2019s the time to talk about this; because when you have a 30-second sound bite on something that\u2019s controversial\u2014these sexuality issues\u2014it\u2019s probably not going to go well. You need to have some time to develop more what you think.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin, I\u2019d add one thing to what you\u2019re saying. I think today, as never before, we have to train our children to be missional. They need to be about the Father\u2019s business, just like Jesus was. A part of that is, yes, speaking the truth; but it\u2019s speaking the truth\u2014held in tension with grace, and love, and humility that embraces broken people where they live. There\u2019s where the church has a great message for a broken culture\u2014we\u2019re all broken!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; if people you evangelize\u2014and they want to jump in\u2014they want to talk about, \u201cWhat about gay marriage?\u201d\u2014yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t want to hide what I think about that, but it\u2019s ultimately a lordship of Christ issue. I want to talk to people about Christ. I want to help people realize, just like Paul in Acts, to defend our faith and to evangelize our faith can go together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So on the sex-ed committee at public school, when they turn to you and say, \u201cSo what do you think?\u201d how do you pick the place where you bring Scripture in and bring Jesus in versus the place where you say, \u201cThere\u2019s just not wisdom in the approach that we\u2019re taking here\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s really hard to know how to do that. Certainly, in that context, I wouldn\u2019t\u2014you know, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d I don\u2019t go to Romans 1 in a school board setting \/ public school. What I tried to do\u2014and I don\u2019t know that I did it successfully\u2014was try to make space that our views, as Christians, have legitimacy, and have a place at the table, and are based in\u2014not bigotry\u2014but in good thinking and historical precedence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe one thing, strategically, that we do have\u2014if people are willing to be honest, which they often aren\u2019t\u2014is to say, \u201cOkay; you all want to be inclusive,\u201d\u2014university town \/ they all like inclusivity\u2014I say: \u201cOkay; what does it mean to really be inclusive? Are you inclusive of people like us?\u2014are you inclusive? You want to represent the kid with two moms\u2014what about the kid who has a mom with seven kids? That\u2019s not represented in the curriculum here.\u201d You try to angle <em>that<\/em> way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I would try to present people\u2014you know: \u201cIf you think bigotry is coming to conclusions, apart from reason and rationality, then I agree with that. Let\u2019s be <em>thoughtful<\/em>. Look\u2014if we\u2019re really a community\u2014and we really value thinking, and we don\u2019t want to be bigots \/ we want to be reasonable people, then why don\u2019t we step back? Why don\u2019t we hear from both sides of this?\u201d If you want your kids to be well-taught, right, why do you have to be afraid? Why not give them the best arguments that we can think of?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me come back\u2014because we\u2019re running out of time\u2014but I want to be back to the disaffected 23-year-old, who is not going to church on Sunday anymore. Mom and Dad don\u2019t know what to do. They\u2019ve been on their knees about this for a couple of years, since it became clear that they kind of lost this son or daughter during college. They don\u2019t know what to say\u2014whether to prod \/ whether to say nothing. What counsel would you give? What kind of pastoral wisdom would you have for those parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin: <\/strong>\u00a0Don\u2019t underestimate what you\u2019ve already poured into them. I think then\u2014as a parent \/ as you parent in a different way now\u2014it\u2019s keeping that bridge open. You don\u2019t want it to be so that, in addition to repenting before Christ to come back to the church\u2014which is what they need to do\u2014that you\u2019re making them shamefaced, swallow, eat crow, come before you and \u201cYou were right, Mom and Dad. I should have been going to church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re not trying to <em>win<\/em> an argument with them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, there are certain things you have to draw the line\u2014maybe: \u201cYou\u2019re not going to live here. You\u2019re not going to have that sort of relationship in our house,\u201d\u2014and I completely support parents doing that. But with the disaffected 20-something Millennial, who\u2019s not going to church, I think parents continue to love \/ they continue to ask questions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember, as a kid, feeling like, \u201cMom and Dad, why do you have to ask questions?\u201d And yet, there was that part of me that, if they didn\u2019t, I\u2019d feel like: \u201cWell, don\u2019t you care about me? Isn\u2019t that your job? You\u2019re supposed to ask questions, and I\u2019m supposed to seem like I don\u2019t care.\u201d [Laughter] Don\u2019t underestimate <em>how<\/em> much a child always needs to know that Mom and Dad love him and to tell them that: \u201cI love you. You know what I want, but I love you,\u201d\u2014you keep that open. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen you have to\u2014the Holy Spirit\u2014you are not the Holy Spirit in your child\u2019s life \/ only the Holy Spirit can play that role.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And make the home a safe place where a teenager can come home with doubts and have a receptive audience that doesn\u2019t condemn their doubts but encourages them in the journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0I just look back on my own life\u2014how I literally, as a junior in college, the spiritual lights came on in my life. I literally went on a walk at the University of Arkansas that led me into the church that was the leading church in the state of Arkansas in reaching college students. One fourth of the student body at the University of Arkansas came to that church every year\u2014a student body of 10,000 people \/ 2,500 students came to that church. They were hearing about Jesus Christ around the issues of our day\u2014Him being relevant as never before \/ the One who was a radical and the One who spoke truth. Pray for your kids\u2014that they will stumble into a great church that preaches the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI so appreciate you, Kevin, being a pastor, a dad, a husband, a man in this culture, and doing your best to follow Christ.
