They\u2019re trying to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cearn God\u2019s favor.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; \u201cearn God\u2019s favor\u201d\u2014earn merit through the denying of the flesh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s <em>not<\/em> what the whole idea of a fast during the Lenten season is all about; is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s not. The whole idea of fasting is to make a sacrifice\u2014to begin to feel a little of what it means to give up and to sacrifice oneself, or to deny oneself, something; because we can\u2019t begin to fathom the sacrifice that Christ made, and we never will. But, when we deny ourselves something, it\u2019s just a tiny touch of what Christ did for us. So, it\u2019s a way to prepare our hearts. It\u2019s a way to prepare our soul and to say, \u201cI want to enter into the sufferings of Christ, at some level, so that I can be more grateful and more appreciative of what He did for me.\u201d The whole idea is preparing your heart and humbling yourself in preparation for Resurrection Sunday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our family has, for the last two-plus decades, given up something for Lent. We don\u2019t go to a liturgical church \/ this was not a part of our tradition growing up. We just decided that we rarely deny ourselves anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, during the Lenten season\u2014during that six-and-a-half weeks leading up to Easter\u2014for us to be fasting something, whether it\u2019s media, or a kind of food, or whatever you\u2019re doing\u2014then, when you have the impulse \/ that craving that says, \u201cI would sure like some ice cream right now,\u201d that\u2019s a trigger for me to stop and think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThere\u2019s a reason I\u2019m not doing this. There\u2019s a reason I\u2019m not going to have ice cream today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s a little bit of suffering for me to not have a scoop of ice cream, but it\u2019s nothing compared to the sufferings of Christ on my behalf.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So now, all of a sudden, I\u2019m meditating on the suffering of Christ on my behalf and on His resurrection on my behalf as well. So, for six-and-a-half weeks\u2014and I just need to explain, here, the reason it\u2019s six-and-a-half weeks. You know, it\u2019s a 40-day fast\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but it starts 46 days before Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s because every Sunday is a non-fast day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason that the ancients said you don\u2019t fast on Sunday is because you\u2019re not going to fast on the day that you commemorate the Lord\u2019s resurrection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right; because every Sunday was a reminder\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it should be a day of celebration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014right; of the resurrection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what happened at our house was that everybody looked forward to Sunday. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A big bowl of ice cream!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, chocolate chip cookies were coming out. We had kids staying up until midnight on Saturday night\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh, on Saturday night. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Break fast. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to bake cookies that they could eat at 12:05 in order to celebrate; because, \u201cNow, it\u2019s Sunday!\u201d\u00a0 But you know what? That made everybody\u2014Sunday was the focal point of the week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We couldn\u2019t wait for Sunday!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you might say, \u201cWell, that\u2019s because you were looking forward to cookies, not looking forward to church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But there was something about the whole rhythm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what? That\u2019s okay, though. It really is okay, because you start to get the point. You start looking forward to Sunday\u2014when the tomb is empty, when death is defeated, and Christ made good on His promise and is seated at the right hand of the Father and can offer us eternal life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014obviously, cookies and ice cream, and all that stuff, that\u2019s nothing! That\u2019s nothing when you\u2019re talking about your eternal destiny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have been at work developing a resource for families to use to help draw our attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s not just ice cream drawing our attention back to the resurrection. This is a resource called \u201cThe Messiah Mystery.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Explain what it is and why you decided to go the direction of a mystery, in terms of this resource.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, there are a couple reasons we decided to call it a mystery. One is because it was, in fact, a mystery. All throughout the Old Testament, there were hints. God gave hints in all kinds of time periods and in different ways. He was leaving these hints to say: \u201cI am going to redeem you. I am going to come, and here\u2019s what to watch for.\u201d But the people living in all those hundreds of years before Christ came had no idea <em>when.<\/em> They had no idea <em>how <\/em>it was going to happen. So it was, in fact, a mystery.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second reason we decided to do it is because a mystery is something that all of us can engage in. My kids loved mystery books \/ I loved mystery books. One of our favorite games, when I was growing up and that we played all the time with our kids, was the game Clue<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Trying to solve a mystery is always intriguing. It\u2019s fun, and it\u2019s engaging. So I wanted kids to approach the Scripture that way. I wanted them to look at the Bible and think: \u201cThis is fun! I\u2019m going to discover something new.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually equip adults and kids to become detectives and sleuths.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just want to make sure Colonel Mustard has nothing to do with the Messiah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No lead pipe. There\u2019s no lead pipe\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they never spend any time in the conservatory?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and there\u2019s no ballroom. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> None of that; but you say\u2014and this is really cool \/ I had never thought of this before\u2014but you say there are more than 300 clues in the Old Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> There are lots of clues in the Old Testament, and we only give you a fraction in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery<em>.<\/em>\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Other people have called them prophecies, but you call them clues. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I like that, Bob, because it taps into something that is true of all of us. We\u2019re all curious, but children can really get into this. In fact, we both were surprised at the feedback we got back from both adults and children of how they got into the game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not really a game\u2014it\u2019s coming out of the Bible \/ it\u2019s a real story\u2014but how they connected with the idea. They\u2019re finding out things that are true about Jesus Christ in Old Testament passages. She does this by taking you through six nights\u2014over a six-week period\u2014family nights that you can spend discovering these clues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What\u2019s interesting is\u2014when you begin to see how regularly the Old Testament is pointing toward the coming of the Messiah and identifying the characteristics that will be true of this coming Messiah, you begin to see that all of Scripture points to Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our church did a sermon series. It was a year-long sermon series, where we went through the 66 books of the Bible in 52 weeks. Every Sunday was an overview of a different book of the Bible. The sermon series\u2014each message was called, \u201cJesus in Genesis,\u201d \u201cJesus in Exodus,\u201d and \u201cJesus in Leviticus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t tend to think of Jesus in the book of Numbers, but He\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> He\u2019s there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014He\u2019s everywhere; isn\u2019t He?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He is there. As Barbara says in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201d\u2014she has the statement that, \u201cGod is in the details.\u201d One of them that she points out is\u2014in the tabernacle, there was a veil that separated the Holy of Holies\u2014you say in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery<em>.<\/em>\u201d You ask kids to discover this\u2014that the veil is a clue. Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It is a clue. It\u2019s one of my favorite clues, actually. We printed in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201djournal the description of the veil that they were to make and hang in the temple that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. As they read the verse, it describes the way the veil was made. Then there are these other verses that we sprinkle throughout \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201djournal that are called decoder verses; because we know that a lot of the New Testament explains the Old Testament\u2014so we have a decoder verse for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe decoder verse in the New Testament talks about how the veil\u2014when Christ died on the cross, the veil\u2014was ripped in two. There\u2019s this connection between what happened to the veil in the temple when Christ died and how the veil was made initially. There\u2019s this learning that goes on: \u201cWhy was there a veil? Why did God put a veil between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place? Why was it so thick? Why was it so big? Why weren\u2019t you supposed to go in there? What happened if you went in there?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo all of those things \/ all of those clues point to the relationship that God has with us because of our sin and the kind that He wants to have with us in the future after Christ dies and is resurrected. So that\u2019s just one little tiny piece of the clues that are in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the ripping of the veil?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What does that symbolize?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, that God is the One who breached the sin \/ He\u2019s the One who conquered it. And the coolest thing is that the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom\u2014so God Himself ripped that veil and got rid of it, signifying that we can now enter into His presence because of Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, they couldn\u2019t go in there. If they went into the Holy of Holies, they would die. The priest had a rope tied around their ankle so that, if they went in and did something wrong and died, somebody could pull them out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we understand, as adults, and as we help our children understand the magnitude of our brokenness and how we were not able to approach God without Christ. We don\u2019t understand that because we live after the resurrection. We enter His presence freely, in prayer, all the time and don\u2019t think anything about it. But, in the Old Testament, they couldn\u2019t go near God. The veil was what separated them. So, the veil is a <em>very<\/em> important clue it\u2019s a very important piece of the whole \u201cMessiah Mystery.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The book that you\u2019ve printed is an 80-page guidebook \/ a journal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And along with the narrative, you have clues, as you said, sprinkled throughout. But the clues are in a tiny typeface; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They are\u2014tee-nine-sy typeface, Bob. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And what\u2019s the reason for making it so tee-nine-sy? Is it two point five?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s tiny!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It is tiny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But is it the clue, or is it the answer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> The answer to the clue\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the <em>answer<\/em> to the clue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014the answer to the question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you read a verse, as a family. Then, there are questions about that verse. As we were talking about the veil, just now, there will be questions. We\u2019ll say, \u201cWhy was the veil so thick?\u201d or \u201cWhat does this signify?\u201d It is a clue to the Messiah \/ the coming Messiah\u2014then the answer to that clue will be printed in real tiny font in the shape of a magnifying glass. You literally have to use your magnifying glass to read the answer on the page.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said there\u2019s a poster that comes along with this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> There is a poster. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Explain what that\u2019s all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, we were thinking that it would be fun, especially for younger kids, to have a way to count down 40 days\u2014and it\u2019s really 46, as we said earlier\u2014but that\u2019s a long time to anticipate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is. It\u2019s a long time to give up ice cream\u2014Brussels sprouts, not so much\u2014but ice cream, that\u2019s tough!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But ice cream; yes. So we created a poster and a paper chain. You make the paper chain and hang the paper chain up. You take off one strip every day. They are numbered, and the poster has corresponding numbers on the poster. You put that strip on the poster. At the end of the 40 days, it will reveal a part of the answer, anyway, to \u201cThe Messiah Mystery.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is also one last clue\u2014that requires the magnifying glass\u2014that\u2019s on the poster itself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it makes the whole process interactive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not just: \u201cSit down. I\u2019m going to read you a story, and we\u2019ll say a prayer,\u201d and you\u2019ll be done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kids have to be engaged, in all kinds of levels\u2014with magnifying glasses, and their clue journal that they\u2019re writing clues in, and then this poster.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you have that kind of engagement, learning goes deeper; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I know that one of the things that is on parents\u2019 hearts is the eternal destiny \/ the spiritual condition of their children, whether they are young children or teenagers. I want you to just comment on this, Barbara; because this is a practical explanation for why we need a Savior and why the Savior came to redeem us from our sins. All these stories of the Passover and the veil\u2014and it being ripped\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they carry a message for us that God is pursuing us and wants a relationship with us. Our children need to hear that. I think this resource will be used with a lot of kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> In the resource, there are a couple of places where we make reference to the fact that, \u201cIf you don\u2019t know Christ, now is a great time to know Him.\u201d There is a sample prayer at the end of the journal that you can use with your child or with someone else, for that matter, to help them begin a relationship with Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m imagining, Barbara, that if you were going to do this with your eight-year-old, your eight-year-old would go, \u201cOkay; that\u2019s cool.\u201d\u00a0 Your six-year-old would say, \u201cThat\u2019s really cool!\u201d\u00a0 Your eight-year-old would say, \u201cThat\u2019s cool.\u201d\u00a0 Your ten-year-old would kind of say, \u201cDo we have to?\u201d Your twelve-year-old would just roll the eyes and say, \u201cOh, Mom; really?!\u201d [Laughter] What do you do with the twelve-year-old when you say, \u201cHey, I got this cool new thing we got from FamilyLife\u2014\u2018The Messiah Mystery<em>.\u2019 <\/em>We\u2019re going to go through it at Lent, and you\u2019re giving up your iPod<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for the month.\u201d How do you make that cool?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, you don\u2019t make them give up their iPod. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a start; because when you force them to give it up, that\u2019s a sure recipe for failure. But, you know, there will be kids who are going to roll their eyes\u2014it\u2019s just part of the parenting process. You\u2019re going to have teenagers, who just think: \u201cOh, gosh! Here we go again!\u201d But, you know, what we always felt like, with our kids\u2014when we had teenagers, and they were not real eager\u2014we just thought, \u201cYou know, we\u2019re going to do this.\u201d We trusted that there was truth that was sinking in, even when they were rolling their eyes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, again, I\u2019ve tried to make this engaging enough that there are some pretty cool things in there that are just for teenagers; because there is a section in every one of the six sessions that is for adults and teens that\u2019s much deeper \/ it\u2019s much more involved. I\u2019m hoping that kids will kind of get into it in spite of themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to take you out to Session Six\u2014it\u2019s called \u201cClues in the Vineyard.\u201d I just want to read you the beginning of this session:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDetectives use the words \u201chot\u201d and \u201ccold\u201d to describe their cases, saying the trail of evidence has gone cold when their search comes to a dead end\u2014the clues and tips seem to stop. Exactly the same thing happened in the Bible. For thousands of years, the clues about the Messiah continued to be given, like bread crumbs sprinkled along the path. Those who believed and were waiting felt they were getting warmer and warmer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, suddenly, inexplicably, the clues stopped. For four hundred years, there was not a single word from God; not even a whisper of a clue was given. Then, on the darkest of days, an angel broke the silence and announced, \u201cThis will be a sign for you\u2026\u201d in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2, verse 12. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the few who were there, the clues began to connect like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. But Bethlehem was so obscure; no one was looking there of all places. For the next 30 years, the answer to the Messiah mystery was in plain sight; but no one knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat pulls kids into the story. Christmas will have new meaning because of this. Easter is going to have a great meaning because of this; because Resurrection Sunday is a day of hope, new life, of death being defeated, and of the promise of a relationship with Almighty God. I can\u2019t think of a better way to move toward the Easter season than spending some family time, over the next six weeks, to do just that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just curious, Barbara, what you would say to a mom or a dad who said: \u201cYou know\u2014we\u2019ve never done this Lent thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHonestly, it feels weird. I like the idea, but I just don\u2019t know about the whole Lent thing.\u201d What would you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think I would just say, \u201cGive it a try,\u201d because you don\u2019t have to give up dessert. You don\u2019t have to do the things that perhaps you\u2019re a little uncomfortable with. I think that is perhaps what people might feel is odd or uncomfortable to them. I think so often, as moms and dads, we don\u2019t try because we are afraid of failing; or we don\u2019t try because we know we can\u2019t finish\u2014so \u201cWhy bother?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need to remember that something is better than nothing. It\u2019s like the teenager rolling his eyes\u2014okay; so he\u2019s rolling his eyes \/ or so she\u2019s rolling her eyes\u2014and doesn\u2019t want to be there. But something is better than nothing. The few words that they do listen might resonate next week or next year\u2014you just don\u2019t know. So, don\u2019t quit before you start. Give it a try; and trust that what you do accomplish, God is going to use for great good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have two thoughts. Number one, just because their eyes are rolling or they close their eyes, doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t listening. I\u2019m telling you\u2014you never know how the Spirit of God will take something you\u2019re teaching as you go through \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201d with your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing\u2014back to your question, Bob\u2014the thing of Lent kind of sounds kind of weird or \u201cI\u2019m not sure I want to get into that,\u201d\u2014I\u2019ve got a simple solution. Don\u2019t call it Lent\u2014just take the next six weeks and just go through \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201das though it were a series of family times leading up to Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You could call it Easter Advent\u2014I guess you could do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You can do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You could do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We should let our listeners know that we do have a limited supply available of \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201d resource. It\u2019s a way to prepare our soul and to say, \u201cI want to enter into the sufferings of Christ, at some level, so that I can be more grateful and more appreciative of what He did for me.\u201d The whole idea is preparing your heart and humbling yourself in preparation for Resurrection Sunday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our family has, for the last two-plus decades, given up something for Lent. We don\u2019t go to a liturgical church \/ this was not a part of our tradition growing up. We just decided that we rarely deny ourselves anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, during the Lenten season\u2014during that six-and-a-half weeks leading up to Easter\u2014for us to be fasting something, whether it\u2019s media, or a kind of food, or whatever you\u2019re doing\u2014then, when you have the impulse \/ that craving that says, \u201cI would sure like some ice cream right now,\u201d that\u2019s a trigger for me to stop and think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThere\u2019s a reason I\u2019m not doing this. There\u2019s a reason I\u2019m not going to have ice cream today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s a little bit of suffering for me to not have a scoop of ice cream, but it\u2019s nothing compared to the sufferings of Christ on my behalf.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So now, all of a sudden, I\u2019m meditating on the suffering of Christ on my behalf and on His resurrection on my behalf as well. So, for six-and-a-half weeks\u2014and I just need to explain, here, the reason it\u2019s six-and-a-half weeks. You know, it\u2019s a 40-day fast\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but it starts 46 days before Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s because every Sunday is a non-fast day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason that the ancients said you don\u2019t fast on Sunday is because you\u2019re not going to fast on the day that you commemorate the Lord\u2019s resurrection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right; because every Sunday was a reminder\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it should be a day of celebration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014right; of the resurrection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So what happened at our house was that everybody looked forward to Sunday. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A big bowl of ice cream!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, chocolate chip cookies were coming out. We had kids staying up until midnight on Saturday night\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh, on Saturday night. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Break fast. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to bake cookies that they could eat at 12:05 in order to celebrate; because, \u201cNow, it\u2019s Sunday!\u201d\u00a0 But you know what? That made everybody\u2014Sunday was the focal point of the week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We couldn\u2019t wait for Sunday!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you might say, \u201cWell, that\u2019s because you were looking forward to cookies, not looking forward to church.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But there was something about the whole rhythm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what? That\u2019s okay, though. It really is okay, because you start to get the point. You start looking forward to Sunday\u2014when the tomb is empty, when death is defeated, and Christ made good on His promise and is seated at the right hand of the Father and can offer us eternal life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014obviously, cookies and ice cream, and all that stuff, that\u2019s nothing! That\u2019s nothing when you\u2019re talking about your eternal destiny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have been at work developing a resource for families to use to help draw our attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it\u2019s not just ice cream drawing our attention back to the resurrection. This is a resource called \u201cThe Messiah Mystery.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Explain what it is and why you decided to go the direction of a mystery, in terms of this resource.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, there are a couple reasons we decided to call it a mystery. One is because it was, in fact, a mystery. All throughout the Old Testament, there were hints. God gave hints in all kinds of time periods and in different ways. He was leaving these hints to say: \u201cI am going to redeem you. I am going to come, and here\u2019s what to watch for.\u201d But the people living in all those hundreds of years before Christ came had no idea <em>when.<\/em> They had no idea <em>how <\/em>it was going to happen. So it was, in fact, a mystery.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second reason we decided to do it is because a mystery is something that all of us can engage in. My kids loved mystery books \/ I loved mystery books. One of our favorite games, when I was growing up and that we played all the time with our kids, was the game Clue<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Trying to solve a mystery is always intriguing. It\u2019s fun, and it\u2019s engaging. So I wanted kids to approach the Scripture that way. I wanted them to look at the Bible and think: \u201cThis is fun! I\u2019m going to discover something new.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually equip adults and kids to become detectives and sleuths.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just want to make sure Colonel Mustard has nothing to do with the Messiah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No lead pipe. There\u2019s no lead pipe\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they never spend any time in the conservatory?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and there\u2019s no ballroom. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> None of that; but you say\u2014and this is really cool \/ I had never thought of this before\u2014but you say there are more than 300 clues in the Old Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> There are lots of clues in the Old Testament, and we only give you a fraction in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery<em>.<\/em>\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Other people have called them prophecies, but you call them clues. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I like that, Bob, because it taps into something that is true of all of us. We\u2019re all curious, but children can really get into this. In fact, we both were surprised at the feedback we got back from both adults and children of how they got into the game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not really a game\u2014it\u2019s coming out of the Bible \/ it\u2019s a real story\u2014but how they connected with the idea. They\u2019re finding out things that are true about Jesus Christ in Old Testament passages. She does this by taking you through six nights\u2014over a six-week period\u2014family nights that you can spend discovering these clues.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What\u2019s interesting is\u2014when you begin to see how regularly the Old Testament is pointing toward the coming of the Messiah and identifying the characteristics that will be true of this coming Messiah, you begin to see that all of Scripture points to Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our church did a sermon series. It was a year-long sermon series, where we went through the 66 books of the Bible in 52 weeks. Every Sunday was an overview of a different book of the Bible. The sermon series\u2014each message was called, \u201cJesus in Genesis,\u201d \u201cJesus in Exodus,\u201d and \u201cJesus in Leviticus.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t tend to think of Jesus in the book of Numbers, but He\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> He\u2019s there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014He\u2019s everywhere; isn\u2019t He?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He is there. As Barbara says in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201d\u2014she has the statement that, \u201cGod is in the details.\u201d One of them that she points out is\u2014in the tabernacle, there was a veil that separated the Holy of Holies\u2014you say in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery<em>.<\/em>\u201d You ask kids to discover this\u2014that the veil is a clue. Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It is a clue. It\u2019s one of my favorite clues, actually. We printed in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201djournal the description of the veil that they were to make and hang in the temple that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. As they read the verse, it describes the way the veil was made. Then there are these other verses that we sprinkle throughout \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201djournal that are called decoder verses; because we know that a lot of the New Testament explains the Old Testament\u2014so we have a decoder verse for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe decoder verse in the New Testament talks about how the veil\u2014when Christ died on the cross, the veil\u2014was ripped in two. There\u2019s this connection between what happened to the veil in the temple when Christ died and how the veil was made initially. There\u2019s this learning that goes on: \u201cWhy was there a veil? Why did God put a veil between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place? Why was it so thick? Why was it so big? Why weren\u2019t you supposed to go in there? What happened if you went in there?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo all of those things \/ all of those clues point to the relationship that God has with us because of our sin and the kind that He wants to have with us in the future after Christ dies and is resurrected. So that\u2019s just one little tiny piece of the clues that are in \u201cThe Messiah Mystery.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the ripping of the veil?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What does that symbolize?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, that God is the One who breached the sin \/ He\u2019s the One who conquered it. And the coolest thing is that the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom\u2014so God Himself ripped that veil and got rid of it, signifying that we can now enter into His presence because of Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, they couldn\u2019t go in there. If they went into the Holy of Holies, they would die. The priest had a rope tied around their ankle so that, if they went in and did something wrong and died, somebody could pull them out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we understand, as adults, and as we help our children understand the magnitude of our brokenness and how we were not able to approach God without Christ. We don\u2019t understand that because we live after the resurrection. We enter His presence freely, in prayer, all the time and don\u2019t think anything about it. But, in the Old Testament, they couldn\u2019t go near God. The veil was what separated them. So, the veil is a <em>very<\/em> important clue it\u2019s a very important piece of the whole \u201cMessiah Mystery.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The book that you\u2019ve printed is an 80-page guidebook \/ a journal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And along with the narrative, you have clues, as you said, sprinkled throughout. But the clues are in a tiny typeface; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They are\u2014tee-nine-sy typeface, Bob. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And what\u2019s the reason for making it so tee-nine-sy? Is it two point five?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s tiny!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It is tiny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But is it the clue, or is it the answer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> The answer to the clue\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the <em>answer<\/em> to the clue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014the answer to the question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you read a verse, as a family. Then, there are questions about that verse. As we were talking about the veil, just now, there will be questions. We\u2019ll say, \u201cWhy was the veil so thick?\u201d or \u201cWhat does this signify?\u201d It is a clue to the Messiah \/ the coming Messiah\u2014then the answer to that clue will be printed in real tiny font in the shape of a magnifying glass. You literally have to use your magnifying glass to read the answer on the page.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said there\u2019s a poster that comes along with this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> There is a poster. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Explain what that\u2019s all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, we were thinking that it would be fun, especially for younger kids, to have a way to count down 40 days\u2014and it\u2019s really 46, as we said earlier\u2014but that\u2019s a long time to anticipate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is. It\u2019s a long time to give up ice cream\u2014Brussels sprouts, not so much\u2014but ice cream, that\u2019s tough!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But ice cream; yes. So we created a poster and a paper chain. You make the paper chain and hang the paper chain up. You take off one strip every day. They are numbered, and the poster has corresponding numbers on the poster. You put that strip on the poster. At the end of the 40 days, it will reveal a part of the answer, anyway, to \u201cThe Messiah Mystery.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is also one last clue\u2014that requires the magnifying glass\u2014that\u2019s on the poster itself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So it makes the whole process interactive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not just: \u201cSit down. I\u2019m going to read you a story, and we\u2019ll say a prayer,\u201d and you\u2019ll be done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kids have to be engaged, in all kinds of levels\u2014with magnifying glasses, and their clue journal that they\u2019re writing clues in, and then this poster.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you have that kind of engagement, learning goes deeper; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I know that one of the things that is on parents\u2019 hearts is the eternal destiny \/ the spiritual condition of their children, whether they are young children or teenagers. I want you to just comment on this, Barbara; because this is a practical explanation for why we need a Savior and why the Savior came to redeem us from our sins. All these stories of the Passover and the veil\u2014and it being ripped\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they carry a message for us that God is pursuing us and wants a relationship with us. Our children need to hear that. I think this resource will be used with a lot of kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> In the resource, there are a couple of places where we make reference to the fact that, \u201cIf you don\u2019t know Christ, now is a great time to know Him.\u201d There is a sample prayer at the end of the journal that you can use with your child or with someone else, for that matter, to help them begin a relationship with Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m imagining, Barbara, that if you were going to do this with your eight-year-old, your eight-year-old would go, \u201cOkay; that\u2019s cool.\u201d\u00a0 Your six-year-old would say, \u201cThat\u2019s really cool!\u201d\u00a0 Your eight-year-old would say, \u201cThat\u2019s cool.\u201d\u00a0 Your ten-year-old would kind of say, \u201cDo we have to?\u201d Your twelve-year-old would just roll the eyes and say, \u201cOh, Mom; really?!\u201d [Laughter] What do you do with the twelve-year-old when you say, \u201cHey, I got this cool new thing we got from FamilyLife\u2014\u2018The Messiah Mystery<em>.\u2019 <\/em>We\u2019re going to go through it at Lent, and you\u2019re giving up your iPod<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for the month.\u201d How do you make that cool?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, you don\u2019t make them give up their iPod. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a start; because when you force them to give it up, that\u2019s a sure recipe for failure. But, you know, there will be kids who are going to roll their eyes\u2014it\u2019s just part of the parenting process. You\u2019re going to have teenagers, who just think: \u201cOh, gosh! Here we go again!\u201d But, you know, what we always felt like, with our kids\u2014when we had teenagers, and they were not real eager\u2014we just thought, \u201cYou know, we\u2019re going to do this.\u201d We trusted that there was truth that was sinking in, even when they were rolling their eyes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, again, I\u2019ve tried to make this engaging enough that there are some pretty cool things in there that are just for teenagers; because there is a section in every one of the six sessions that is for adults and teens that\u2019s much deeper \/ it\u2019s much more involved. I\u2019m hoping that kids will kind of get into it in spite of themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to take you out to Session Six\u2014it\u2019s called \u201cClues in the Vineyard.\u201d I just want to read you the beginning of this session:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDetectives use the words \u201chot\u201d and \u201ccold\u201d to describe their cases, saying the trail of evidence has gone cold when their search comes to a dead end\u2014the clues and tips seem to stop. Exactly the same thing happened in the Bible. For thousands of years, the clues about the Messiah continued to be given, like bread crumbs sprinkled along the path. Those who believed and were waiting felt they were getting warmer and warmer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, suddenly, inexplicably, the clues stopped. For four hundred years, there was not a single word from God; not even a whisper of a clue was given. Then, on the darkest of days, an angel broke the silence and announced, \u201cThis will be a sign for you\u2026\u201d in the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2, verse 12. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the few who were there, the clues began to connect like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle. But Bethlehem was so obscure; no one was looking there of all places. For the next 30 years, the answer to the Messiah mystery was in plain sight; but no one knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat pulls kids into the story. Christmas will have new meaning because of this. Easter is going to have a great meaning because of this; because Resurrection Sunday is a day of hope, new life, of death being defeated, and of the promise of a relationship with Almighty God. I can\u2019t think of a better way to move toward the Easter season than spending some family time, over the next six weeks, to do just that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m just curious, Barbara, what you would say to a mom or a dad who said: \u201cYou know\u2014we\u2019ve never done this Lent thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHonestly, it feels weird. I like the idea, but I just don\u2019t know about the whole Lent thing.\u201d What would you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think I would just say, \u201cGive it a try,\u201d because you don\u2019t have to give up dessert. You don\u2019t have to do the things that perhaps you\u2019re a little uncomfortable with. I think that is perhaps what people might feel is odd or uncomfortable to them. I think so often, as moms and dads, we don\u2019t try because we are afraid of failing; or we don\u2019t try because we know we can\u2019t finish\u2014so \u201cWhy bother?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need to remember that something is better than nothing. It\u2019s like the teenager rolling his eyes\u2014okay; so he\u2019s rolling his eyes \/ or so she\u2019s rolling her eyes\u2014and doesn\u2019t want to be there. But something is better than nothing. The few words that they do listen might resonate next week or next year\u2014you just don\u2019t know. So, don\u2019t quit before you start. Give it a try; and trust that what you do accomplish, God is going to use for great good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have two thoughts. Number one, just because their eyes are rolling or they close their eyes, doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t listening. I\u2019m telling you\u2014you never know how the Spirit of God will take something you\u2019re teaching as you go through \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201d with your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing\u2014back to your question, Bob\u2014the thing of Lent kind of sounds kind of weird or \u201cI\u2019m not sure I want to get into that,\u201d\u2014I\u2019ve got a simple solution. Don\u2019t call it Lent\u2014just take the next six weeks and just go through \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201das though it were a series of family times leading up to Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You could call it Easter Advent\u2014I guess you could do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You can do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You could do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We should let our listeners know that we do have a limited supply available of \u201cThe Messiah Mystery\u201d resource.
