The adults weren\u2019t exchanging gifts; so, literally, I had nothing in my pile. He walks over\u2014after everything is done\u2014he walks over to the Christmas tree and pulls an ornament off the tree. Inside the ornament it\u2019s a pearl necklace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cThank you,\u201d and then I went to the bathroom and I cried\u2014because it wasn\u2019t enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Come on!\u2014a pearl necklace?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> I know; I know\u2014and he probably shopped a great sale and used coupons\u2014but I think I equated love and gifts with stuff\u2014and a lot of stuff\u2014not necessarily one meaningful gift. It was very immature, and I was very young. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was really\u2014up until around the time of the boot story\u2014my next door neighbor called me over to her house\u2014this is maybe 15 years later\u2014this has been growing in me\u201415 years later, my next door neighbor called me over to come show me her new wood floors. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is someone who was probably 20 years older than me at the time. They had paid for their house\u2014they had lived in the same house <em>all<\/em> of these years. We open the front door to her house, and her kitchen remodel was gorgeous\u2014new appliances, new backsplash, the countertops and her floors were glorious! I just walked around, my mouth open, and loved every bit of it. I walked\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then you went back to your house. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> \u2014open my front door. This is what I said to my husband: \u201cWe need to redo our floors. While we\u2019re at it, our kitchen needs some work too.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> New appliances\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> New appliances.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Can I tell you: \u201cThis never stops\u201d? We had this conversation, this week, at our house. I keep thinking, as you\u2019re describing this whole issue and how this\u2014this isn\u2019t just what you do with your kids\u2014this is how you deal with it in your own soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI keep thinking of Philippians 4\u2014I keep coming back to that\u2014Paul, who had been in prison as well as having lived in nice places, said [paraphrase]: \u201cI\u2019ve learned that contentment doesn\u2019t come from what bed you\u2019re sleeping on at night or what you had to eat for dinner last night. Contentment comes from knowing who God is and from having your value, your worth, your strength\u2014all of that\u2014found in Him.\u201d That\u2019s a great section of Scripture\u2014not just to help your kids memorize\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the secret of being content is something we all have to learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I just want to ask you about the secret of being content. If you had one piece of advice\u2014for a mom, dad, grandparent listening right now to our broadcast \/ it may be it\u2019s a single person or a young married couple, who\u2019s listening, who are struggling with this in their apartment, where they\u2019re living\u2014what <em>is<\/em> the best piece of advice you could give?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got it\u2014it\u2019s: \u201cTurn the car around and take the boots back\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [with emphasis]\u2014\u201cuntil you get your attitude right, young man!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> That does work!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That <em>does<\/em> work! Or \u201cGo pull out all the weeds.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That works!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> I think\u2014I don\u2019t know if you can narrow it down to one key; but for us\u2014for my family\u2014it\u2019s been the word, \u201cperspective.\u201d We don\u2019t have to teach our kids how to compare themselves to other people. We don\u2019t have to teach ourselves how to compare ourselves\u2014we do that naturally. We are <em>very<\/em> good at seeing what other people have and wanting what they have. It\u2019s the tenth commandment\u2014not to covet what our neighbor has. We are excellent at that, but what we\u2019re not so great at is comparing ourselves to people with less. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do that, we put ourselves in the middle\u2014we can see: \u201cOkay; this person has more, but this person has less.\u201d\u00a0 And we find ourselves in the middle. Perspective is really the birthplace of gratitude, because it makes us thankful for what we have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy kids were serving with their church youth group. They were helping to rebuild a house in Texas from all the flooding that we just encountered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were ripping out sheet rock, and they were pulling up rotten floors. I got a text from my 16-year-old daughter. Her text stopped me in my tracks\u2014it said, \u201cMom, did you know there are people in <em>our<\/em> town, who don\u2019t have floors?\u201d This is a kid who\u2014it\u2019s easy for her to compare herself to people with more, but when she saw that someone didn\u2019t have floors\u2014when she came home that day, she lay down on the floor and she was like, \u201cI\u2019m <em>so<\/em> glad we have floors!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just perspective\u2014I think that\u2019s the <em>key<\/em>. We have to break out of our bubbles. I <em>love<\/em> my family \/ I <em>love<\/em> my kids\u2014I try my best to be an intentional parent. I spent the first ten years doing everything I could to raise a godly family\u2014but I didn\u2019t do it very often outside of my four walls. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t focus on others. I didn\u2019t give my kids opportunities to see how other people live. I think I did them a disservice. For us, the key has been throwing open those doors, raising the windows, getting to know our neighbors and finding places to serve and to give to others. That has brought perspective like nothing else has.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When we were raising our six, I recall looking forward to the time when I could take some of the older children\u2014it was the older three\u2014with me and Barbara on a trip to a third-world country that had a lot of needs. There is something about going near the poor\u2014meeting them \/ finding out they are real human beings, who are living right now, in conditions that we\u2019re not used to seeing \/ we\u2019re not used to experiencing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember\u2014when I took our children, it was a spiritual wheel alignment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014from a great youth group that was doing a good job with them, but that trip\u2014that encounter with people who didn\u2019t have much\u2014did a lot for them in providing what you\u2019re talking about\u2014that perspective.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s been a part of your story as well; in fact, you talk about it in the book you\u2019ve written called <em>Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World<\/em>. Inside the ornament it\u2019s a pearl necklace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cThank you,\u201d and then I went to the bathroom and I cried\u2014because it wasn\u2019t enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Come on!\u2014a pearl necklace?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> I know; I know\u2014and he probably shopped a great sale and used coupons\u2014but I think I equated love and gifts with stuff\u2014and a lot of stuff\u2014not necessarily one meaningful gift. It was very immature, and I was very young. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was really\u2014up until around the time of the boot story\u2014my next door neighbor called me over to her house\u2014this is maybe 15 years later\u2014this has been growing in me\u201415 years later, my next door neighbor called me over to come show me her new wood floors. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is someone who was probably 20 years older than me at the time. They had paid for their house\u2014they had lived in the same house <em>all<\/em> of these years. We open the front door to her house, and her kitchen remodel was gorgeous\u2014new appliances, new backsplash, the countertops and her floors were glorious! I just walked around, my mouth open, and loved every bit of it. I walked\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then you went back to your house. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> \u2014open my front door. This is what I said to my husband: \u201cWe need to redo our floors. While we\u2019re at it, our kitchen needs some work too.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> New appliances\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> New appliances.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Can I tell you: \u201cThis never stops\u201d? We had this conversation, this week, at our house. I keep thinking, as you\u2019re describing this whole issue and how this\u2014this isn\u2019t just what you do with your kids\u2014this is how you deal with it in your own soul. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI keep thinking of Philippians 4\u2014I keep coming back to that\u2014Paul, who had been in prison as well as having lived in nice places, said [paraphrase]: \u201cI\u2019ve learned that contentment doesn\u2019t come from what bed you\u2019re sleeping on at night or what you had to eat for dinner last night. Contentment comes from knowing who God is and from having your value, your worth, your strength\u2014all of that\u2014found in Him.\u201d That\u2019s a great section of Scripture\u2014not just to help your kids memorize\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the secret of being content is something we all have to learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I just want to ask you about the secret of being content. If you had one piece of advice\u2014for a mom, dad, grandparent listening right now to our broadcast \/ it may be it\u2019s a single person or a young married couple, who\u2019s listening, who are struggling with this in their apartment, where they\u2019re living\u2014what <em>is<\/em> the best piece of advice you could give?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got it\u2014it\u2019s: \u201cTurn the car around and take the boots back\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [with emphasis]\u2014\u201cuntil you get your attitude right, young man!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> That does work!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That <em>does<\/em> work! Or \u201cGo pull out all the weeds.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That works!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong> I think\u2014I don\u2019t know if you can narrow it down to one key; but for us\u2014for my family\u2014it\u2019s been the word, \u201cperspective.\u201d We don\u2019t have to teach our kids how to compare themselves to other people. We don\u2019t have to teach ourselves how to compare ourselves\u2014we do that naturally. We are <em>very<\/em> good at seeing what other people have and wanting what they have. It\u2019s the tenth commandment\u2014not to covet what our neighbor has. We are excellent at that, but what we\u2019re not so great at is comparing ourselves to people with less. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do that, we put ourselves in the middle\u2014we can see: \u201cOkay; this person has more, but this person has less.\u201d\u00a0 And we find ourselves in the middle. Perspective is really the birthplace of gratitude, because it makes us thankful for what we have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy kids were serving with their church youth group. They were helping to rebuild a house in Texas from all the flooding that we just encountered. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were ripping out sheet rock, and they were pulling up rotten floors. I got a text from my 16-year-old daughter. Her text stopped me in my tracks\u2014it said, \u201cMom, did you know there are people in <em>our<\/em> town, who don\u2019t have floors?\u201d This is a kid who\u2014it\u2019s easy for her to compare herself to people with more, but when she saw that someone didn\u2019t have floors\u2014when she came home that day, she lay down on the floor and she was like, \u201cI\u2019m <em>so<\/em> glad we have floors!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just perspective\u2014I think that\u2019s the <em>key<\/em>. We have to break out of our bubbles. I <em>love<\/em> my family \/ I <em>love<\/em> my kids\u2014I try my best to be an intentional parent. I spent the first ten years doing everything I could to raise a godly family\u2014but I didn\u2019t do it very often outside of my four walls. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t focus on others. I didn\u2019t give my kids opportunities to see how other people live. I think I did them a disservice. For us, the key has been throwing open those doors, raising the windows, getting to know our neighbors and finding places to serve and to give to others. That has brought perspective like nothing else has.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When we were raising our six, I recall looking forward to the time when I could take some of the older children\u2014it was the older three\u2014with me and Barbara on a trip to a third-world country that had a lot of needs. There is something about going near the poor\u2014meeting them \/ finding out they are real human beings, who are living right now, in conditions that we\u2019re not used to seeing \/ we\u2019re not used to experiencing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember\u2014when I took our children, it was a spiritual wheel alignment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014from a great youth group that was doing a good job with them, but that trip\u2014that encounter with people who didn\u2019t have much\u2014did a lot for them in providing what you\u2019re talking about\u2014that perspective.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s been a part of your story as well; in fact, you talk about it in the book you\u2019ve written called <em>Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World<\/em>.
