We have allowed him to tell us lies\u2014like: \u201cI can\u2019t trust in your love; you may reject me,\u201d or lies that \u201cI have to perform for you to stay with me,\u201d\u2014those are underlying our marriage. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. One of the things that is going to be happening later this year is that you and I are going to be celebrating, Lord willing, 25 years of broadcasting together on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Silver Anniversary!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday comes up in November. In fact, here in a couple of weeks, we are being recognized, at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention, as the \u201cChristian Radio Program of the Year\u201d\u2014which is a very kind acknowledgement from our peers. We are very honored by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is indeed. I just want our listeners to know that this is really Bob coming through; because we won this award, early on, when we had <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> being produced out of a closet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We were in tight quarters; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We were in a converted closet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a storage room that we made into a studio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We won that award twice from that closet. I have been after Bob for a decade, going, \u201cHey, Bob, can we do that again? I got you a real one here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve got real studios.\u201d I just kept telling you, all along, \u201cIt is content, not studio, Dennis.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ooooh! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I had to slide that in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s, here\u2019s what we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Congratulations, though, Bob\u2014you did it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Congratulations to you as well. Here\u2019s what we thought would be fun to do this year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You no longer work here! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We thought that during the year we ought to take some of the themes that we have addressed over 25 years together and just hit some of the highlights from the people we have had on \/ the subjects we have explored: \u201cLet\u2019s just visit some of the things that have been highlight moments for us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith Valentine\u2019s Day just around the corner, we thought: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about love, and romance, and intimacy, and sex in marriage. Let\u2019s talk about it from the perspective of what\u2019s been shared with us for a quarter of a century, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.\u201d<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s let some folks share about it that have been married for a number of years.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis first pair of voices you are going to hear today on our broadcast\u2014many of you will recognize\u2014the co-founders of Campus Crusade for Christ<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> \/ now Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014Bill and Vonette Bright. They just have a sweet story, Bob, of when they were married over 60 years ago. I forget at the point we interviewed them\u2014how many years they had been married then\u2014it had to be 45 years or so years. But it\u2019s a sweet story of what occurred on their honeymoon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> While we were saying, \u201cThank you,\u201d to all in the reception after the wedding ceremony, tin cans were being attached to the car and all kinds of signs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe took off with a lot of noise and enthusiastic farewells. When we got a sufficient distance from Vonette\u2019s home, where the reception was held, we took all those off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen we arrived at the Mayo Hotel, which is the leading hotel in Tulsa, which is 30 miles away. We went in and we acted very nonchalant as though we had been married for years; you know. [Laughter] We did not want to anyone to give\u2014after all, I was 27\u2014so I could have been married for years. Vonette was a child. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vonette:<\/strong> I was all of 22.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> So we went in and registered. We thought we had pulled it off until we got up to the hotel room and discovered we were covered with <em>rice<\/em>\u2014rice in our hair and\u2014[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vonette:<\/strong> It was red, green and white rice, as a matter of fact, that I had prepared for a friend who had been married a year before. At the time of her wedding reception, her mother or the maid \/ somebody had put it away where it couldn\u2019t be found. That rice was thrown on us at our reception\u2014red, green and white!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> You can imagine how we felt when we thought we had pulled it off\u2014very sophisticated, old-time married couple\u2014here, we had rice in our hair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vonette:<\/strong> Today, brides and grooms arrive at the hotel in their wedding dress. What we were trying to cover up?\u2014I do not know! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Fun to hear Bill and Vonette Bright sharing about their honeymoon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sounded to me like they got married at Christmas, with red, green\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was right after Christmas\u2014it was December 30, 1948.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was a great year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201848 was\u2014why? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was the year I was born.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll mark that down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> February 11 of 1948.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember being at my very first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that was shared at the getaway that weekend that was one of those I\u2019ve-never-thought-about-that-before moments for me was when the speaker said, \u201cSex was God\u2019s idea.\u201d It\u2019s not like I had thought differently\u2014I just had never stopped to consider that God was the Creator of \/ the Designer of how men and women come together and what intimacy looks like in a marriage relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It reminds me of what my mentor and friend used to say\u2014Dr. Howard Hendricks\u2014he said, \u201cWe should not be ashamed to discuss that which God was not ashamed to create.\u201d I think today, more than ever, those of us who are followers of Christ\u2014and who believe the Bible and who want to represent the Bible\u2014need to be talking about sex in the most respectful way. We ought to be educating our children\u2014training them how to think about sex but also training them to protect their sexual innocence until marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dr. Juli Slattery agrees with you. She is an author and a speaker. She was with us, recently, on <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>and said this is something we need to be talking more about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> The church\u2019s reaction has been: \u201cGod really doesn\u2019t want us talking about this,\u201d when, in fact, God created it. If you read the Scriptures\u2014from Genesis to Revelation\u2014you will see sexuality addressed over and over again in different contexts; but we skip over those passages \/ we get uncomfortable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what has happened is\u2014that the church has not talked about this for probably hundreds of years. Now, all of a sudden, we realize what a crisis we are in. We feel ill-equipped\u2014it is like: \u201cHow do you jump into the deep end when you\u2019ve never even swam with the water wings on?\u201d Pastors and leaders do not know where to begin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen you add to that, Dennis and Bob, just the average Christian wife, who doesn\u2019t know how to enjoy sexuality, whether it\u2019s physically painful or she\u2019s filled with shame and guilt about this issue \/ she can\u2019t forgive herself for things in the past. It\u2019s not only the shame that you bring into marriage\u2014 that\u2019s a big part of it\u2014but it\u2019s also how you view sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou add all those together\u2014and even things I am not mentioning\u2014maybe her husband is involved in pornography or has been unfaithful. You are talking about a <em>vast<\/em> majority of women, in churches, I would even say, who have these hidden issues and nowhere to go to ask the questions; because they are not invited to ask.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s Dr. Juli Slattery again, talking about the importance of a healthy conversation on issues of intimacy and sexuality. This is something we\u2019ve got to figure out how to deal with appropriately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is. It is hard, Bob, because the culture\u2014one person said: \u201cWhat God designed, man has degenerated,\u201d\u2014he has made fun of it \/ he has used it with crass language \/ crass jokes. That\u2019s not what God had in mind when He created sexual intimacy for a husband and a wife to enjoy with one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, if you think God is down on sex, I would encourage you to dust off the Song of Solomon in your Old Testaments, right after the Psalms and the Proverbs\u2014just read through that book. It\u2019s magnificent as it describes attraction, sexual delight and pleasure. In fact, let me just read to you what Solomon said of his bride\u2014he said: \u201cYou have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride. You have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. How beautiful is your love my sister, my bride. How much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils, than any spice. Your lips drip nectar, my bride. Honey and milk are under your tongue.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe French did not invent the French kiss. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we\u2019re going to have to wrap up. I need to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014get home? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is what is important, here, though. We do need to figure out how we have conversations about this subject\u2014in church; as Christians; and more importantly, as husband and wife. We\u2019ve got to figure out how to talk about this with one another so that our physical relationship can be all God intended it to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We need to have conversations about this and we need to talk about it when we\u2019re not tired and when we can better understand one another. We had a guest, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, who talked about the importance of communication between husbands and wives in this area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, Tim Gardner is a speaker and a writer. He wrote a book called <em>Sacred Sex<\/em>. He made an important point about the fact that our sexual relationship is really tied to how effectively we are communicating with one another in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> In the business world, we talk often about meta-communication, where that\u2019s not just how you communicate\u2014it\u2019s what you think about communication \/ it\u2019s what you think the purpose of communication is. I started thinking about that in connection to sex. We have to realize that everything that wanders through our days and our minds affects what we think about sex or even how we experience sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo meta-sex is understanding that what goes on at breakfast affects our sexual intimacy. What I think about sex during the day; what I see during the day; what happened to me 15 years ago, if I have not dealt with it\u2014all of that affects sex. Meta-sex is realizing that everything I think, do, and respond\u2014everything that I have created in my mind\u2014impacts the sexual experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>For you and Amy, as your marriage progressed, there was something taking place in your marriage that was causing her to be able to keep her focus off of marital intimacy and oneness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I appreciate you bringing that up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you were the one who wrote about it! That\u2019s one of the problems about being\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014with her permission, I might add; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014being an author. You tell these stories, and then you are going to be asked about it by some radio interviewer. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It is out there forever\u2014that is exactly right. I look back on Amy\u2014and we are getting close to 20 years\u2014I was a real clod in this whole area for a lot of years\u2014still a clod in a lot of ways. I was fascinated, as wives will think their husbands are, with sex\u2014but learning about it\u2014\u201cWhat was God saying?\u201d\u2014and always reading books on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife, being much more practical and grounded than me in a lot of ways, was always concerned about our finances. She was a school teacher \/ I was a youth minister\u2014so we were always keeping an eye on things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would say: \u201cWhat about the budget? Have you\u2014we need to talk about the budget. What about this?\u201d I would always say: \u201cYes; yes; yes! But let me tell you about what I read about sex.\u201d One day, it was the proverbial board between the eyes when she said, \u201cHoney, I wish you cared as much about our finances as you do about our sex life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the stop-me-in-my-tracks comment of: \u201cYou know what? She\u2019s right! She\u2019s exactly right. I need to deal with what is important to <em>her<\/em> \/ important to our family. But this is an issue that I am ignoring\u2014that she is trying to get my attention.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I had to understand was that was hurting our sex life, that was hurting our intimacy, that was hurting our entire relationship; because I was not paying attention to something that was vitally important to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I can imagine there is a guy listening to us, right now, who\u2019s going, Bob: \u201cI balance my checkbook. I am cool\u2014I got that covered! I\u2019m taking care of my wife.\u201d Well, if that is not her need, then what is? Is it for you to pray with her on a daily basis?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014or lead your family, spiritually?\u2014or maybe just ask her the question: \u201cSweetheart, what are your top two or three needs, right now, that I can pray for you about?\u2014that I can maybe think about meeting? Would you share with me the top three needs you have so I can better understand who you are and nourish, cherish, love and honor you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It may be simple things like: \u201cDid you take out the trash like I asked you to?\u201d or \u201cDo you put away things after you get them out of the refrigerator like I\u2019ve asked you to?\u201d This matters when it comes to our intimacy relationship, because it all gets mixed together for our wives; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does. I am kind of debating on whether to tell this story or not\u2014if I can tell it appropriately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that long ago, Barbara and I had set aside some time to be together\u2014kind of on the topic of what we are talking about here. We are laying there\u2014I had kissed her a couple of times; we had some conversation; and I kissed her a couple more times\u2014and she said, \u201cWhen are you going to get your knee operated on?\u201d [Laughter] I looked at her and I burst out laughing. Now, Bob, she was <em>dead<\/em> serious; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: Yes\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: I was not making fun of her question; but instantly, she kind of realized the humor of the moment as well. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I want some of you newlyweds to hear: \u201cFour decades later, you are not going to have this whole thing figured out at all;\u201d okay? There are random thoughts that ignite, electronically, across the gray matter of the brain\u2014or maybe it did not come from the brain of all\u2014I do not know where it comes from; but anyway, you have to maintain your sense of humor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? Just enjoy one another and the relationship and do not take yourself or your spouse too seriously.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Being in the moment can mean different things to different people; can\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It can. [Laughter] Sometimes, getting to that moment can take a little longer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, that reminds me of a story you and Barbara shared about one time when you were trying to set the mood. The mood just did not get there for Barbara; right?\u2014is not that how this happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly how it went down. You know, it is just really interesting\u2014telling a story on radio and then to having to live it down. It is a part of our story though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> For us, we really discovered how different we were, romantically, when we were invited to go on a trip to Mazatl\u00e1n, Mexico, with some friends. We thought: \u201cThis is going to be a <em>great<\/em> trip to get away. We really need the time away.\u201d We found someone to keep our two kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You could rekindle the romance!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes! We took off on a plane. It just felt like: \u201cThis will do it. This will be okay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cLeave our problems behind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cGet some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And we both felt a sense of hope, I think, as we flew off into the sunset, that the difference in circumstances \/ the difference in location was going to be enough to spark what we had had before. We got there\u2014I think we got there late at night\u2014put our stuff in the hotel room, went to bed, slept in the next day, got up and did sight-seeing with this other couple, just hung out on the beach\u2014but we would be with somebody else. We didn\u2019t have a lot of time, as I remember, to actually talk and connect\u2014just the two of us that day\u2014which, for me, is really, really important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As a man, this is where I first missed her; because: \u201cHey, you know, we are together with another couple. We are in a romantic place. I mean\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u201cWhat more do you need?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right! \u201cWe\u2019ll have dinner together tonight; we\u2019ll talk.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m guessing that you were thinking: \u201cRomantic location at the beach\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh my goodness! I mean, it was spectacular!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You thought it was a piece of cake because of the location\u2014where we were, we removed from the stress of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014or removed from the kids\u2014I mean, that is how you spell \u201cromance.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were probably thinking, \u201cWe\u2019ll probably have a romantic dinner together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> We had a nice dinner with our friends, and we really did have a good time. And we, you know, the weather was perfect, and the breeze was blowing off the beach, and there\u2019s this little band playing music. I mean, it really was movie-like in supplying the ingredients that we all think need to be there to have romance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe difference is that I still needed to connect, emotionally. I wanted to talk\u2014I wanted to feel like we could connect and that he could hear what I was feeling. I was looking for time to talk about all the things and for him to hear me say some of the things that I needed to say. I was not even sure what they all were either, to tell you the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And meanwhile, here I am, taking a look at the waves\u2014I am going: \u201cLet\u2019s surf!\u201d It was magnificent\u2014I do remember this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I do too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The evening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014it was beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014was just\u2014it was the stuff, as Barbara said, that movies are made of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; so what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> We got back to the room. I knew enough, having been married five years\u2014I knew enough to know that my husband wanted to make love. I knew that we needed to. Deep down inside, I knew this was\u2014that we did and we needed to connect again. What I didn\u2019t realize is how difficult that was going to be because I still\u2014even though we\u2019d had all the wonderful ingredients that Hollywood says you need to have to have romance \/ even though all that had been present\u2014I still didn\u2019t feel connected to him on an emotional level. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I learned, in hindsight, is that I need to feel connected with him and to feel a sense of intimacy <em>before<\/em> I engage in physical intercourse; whereas, he engages in physical intercourse to get that intimacy. We\u2019re both just coming at the same need\u2014which is intimacy in a marriage\u2014we\u2019re just coming at it from opposite directions. We are going the same way \/ we\u2019re just coming from opposite directions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat night, in the hotel room, even though I <em>knew<\/em> that that was what he needed and what we needed, I just couldn\u2019t get there. It was like I was two dimensional. Part of me wanted to be there but part of me could not get there. I did not know how to reconcile the two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It seems to me, as you shared that story with me, did not something get thrown in the hotel room?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A bottle of lotion got tossed\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tossed! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u2014with vigor\u2014I was angry. I did not handle it as an adult should have handled it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I\u2019d like to say to the guys: \u201cMen, your wife spells <em>romance<\/em> R-E-L-A-T-I-O-N-S-H-I-P\u2014relationship. When you try to spell it \u201csex,\u201d you are spelling it the way <em>you<\/em> spell romance. One of the things that is going to be happening later this year is that you and I are going to be celebrating, Lord willing, 25 years of broadcasting together on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Silver Anniversary!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Our 25<sup>th<\/sup> birthday comes up in November. In fact, here in a couple of weeks, we are being recognized, at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention, as the \u201cChristian Radio Program of the Year\u201d\u2014which is a very kind acknowledgement from our peers. We are very honored by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is indeed. I just want our listeners to know that this is really Bob coming through; because we won this award, early on, when we had <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> being produced out of a closet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We were in tight quarters; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We were in a converted closet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was a storage room that we made into a studio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We won that award twice from that closet. I have been after Bob for a decade, going, \u201cHey, Bob, can we do that again? I got you a real one here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve got real studios.\u201d I just kept telling you, all along, \u201cIt is content, not studio, Dennis.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Ooooh! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I had to slide that in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here\u2019s, here\u2019s what we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Congratulations, though, Bob\u2014you did it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Congratulations to you as well. Here\u2019s what we thought would be fun to do this year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You no longer work here! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We thought that during the year we ought to take some of the themes that we have addressed over 25 years together and just hit some of the highlights from the people we have had on \/ the subjects we have explored: \u201cLet\u2019s just visit some of the things that have been highlight moments for us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith Valentine\u2019s Day just around the corner, we thought: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about love, and romance, and intimacy, and sex in marriage. Let\u2019s talk about it from the perspective of what\u2019s been shared with us for a quarter of a century, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.\u201d<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cLet\u2019s let some folks share about it that have been married for a number of years.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis first pair of voices you are going to hear today on our broadcast\u2014many of you will recognize\u2014the co-founders of Campus Crusade for Christ<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> \/ now Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014Bill and Vonette Bright. They just have a sweet story, Bob, of when they were married over 60 years ago. I forget at the point we interviewed them\u2014how many years they had been married then\u2014it had to be 45 years or so years. But it\u2019s a sweet story of what occurred on their honeymoon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> While we were saying, \u201cThank you,\u201d to all in the reception after the wedding ceremony, tin cans were being attached to the car and all kinds of signs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe took off with a lot of noise and enthusiastic farewells. When we got a sufficient distance from Vonette\u2019s home, where the reception was held, we took all those off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen we arrived at the Mayo Hotel, which is the leading hotel in Tulsa, which is 30 miles away. We went in and we acted very nonchalant as though we had been married for years; you know. [Laughter] We did not want to anyone to give\u2014after all, I was 27\u2014so I could have been married for years. Vonette was a child. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vonette:<\/strong> I was all of 22.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> So we went in and registered. We thought we had pulled it off until we got up to the hotel room and discovered we were covered with <em>rice<\/em>\u2014rice in our hair and\u2014[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vonette:<\/strong> It was red, green and white rice, as a matter of fact, that I had prepared for a friend who had been married a year before. At the time of her wedding reception, her mother or the maid \/ somebody had put it away where it couldn\u2019t be found. That rice was thrown on us at our reception\u2014red, green and white!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong> You can imagine how we felt when we thought we had pulled it off\u2014very sophisticated, old-time married couple\u2014here, we had rice in our hair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vonette:<\/strong> Today, brides and grooms arrive at the hotel in their wedding dress. What we were trying to cover up?\u2014I do not know! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Fun to hear Bill and Vonette Bright sharing about their honeymoon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sounded to me like they got married at Christmas, with red, green\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It was right after Christmas\u2014it was December 30, 1948.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was a great year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201848 was\u2014why? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was the year I was born.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll mark that down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> February 11 of 1948.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember being at my very first <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that was shared at the getaway that weekend that was one of those I\u2019ve-never-thought-about-that-before moments for me was when the speaker said, \u201cSex was God\u2019s idea.\u201d It\u2019s not like I had thought differently\u2014I just had never stopped to consider that God was the Creator of \/ the Designer of how men and women come together and what intimacy looks like in a marriage relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It reminds me of what my mentor and friend used to say\u2014Dr. Howard Hendricks\u2014he said, \u201cWe should not be ashamed to discuss that which God was not ashamed to create.\u201d I think today, more than ever, those of us who are followers of Christ\u2014and who believe the Bible and who want to represent the Bible\u2014need to be talking about sex in the most respectful way. We ought to be educating our children\u2014training them how to think about sex but also training them to protect their sexual innocence until marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dr. Juli Slattery agrees with you. She is an author and a speaker. She was with us, recently, on <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>and said this is something we need to be talking more about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Juli:<\/strong> The church\u2019s reaction has been: \u201cGod really doesn\u2019t want us talking about this,\u201d when, in fact, God created it. If you read the Scriptures\u2014from Genesis to Revelation\u2014you will see sexuality addressed over and over again in different contexts; but we skip over those passages \/ we get uncomfortable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what has happened is\u2014that the church has not talked about this for probably hundreds of years. Now, all of a sudden, we realize what a crisis we are in. We feel ill-equipped\u2014it is like: \u201cHow do you jump into the deep end when you\u2019ve never even swam with the water wings on?\u201d Pastors and leaders do not know where to begin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen you add to that, Dennis and Bob, just the average Christian wife, who doesn\u2019t know how to enjoy sexuality, whether it\u2019s physically painful or she\u2019s filled with shame and guilt about this issue \/ she can\u2019t forgive herself for things in the past. It\u2019s not only the shame that you bring into marriage\u2014 that\u2019s a big part of it\u2014but it\u2019s also how you view sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou add all those together\u2014and even things I am not mentioning\u2014maybe her husband is involved in pornography or has been unfaithful. You are talking about a <em>vast<\/em> majority of women, in churches, I would even say, who have these hidden issues and nowhere to go to ask the questions; because they are not invited to ask.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s Dr. Juli Slattery again, talking about the importance of a healthy conversation on issues of intimacy and sexuality. This is something we\u2019ve got to figure out how to deal with appropriately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is. It is hard, Bob, because the culture\u2014one person said: \u201cWhat God designed, man has degenerated,\u201d\u2014he has made fun of it \/ he has used it with crass language \/ crass jokes. That\u2019s not what God had in mind when He created sexual intimacy for a husband and a wife to enjoy with one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, if you think God is down on sex, I would encourage you to dust off the Song of Solomon in your Old Testaments, right after the Psalms and the Proverbs\u2014just read through that book. It\u2019s magnificent as it describes attraction, sexual delight and pleasure. In fact, let me just read to you what Solomon said of his bride\u2014he said: \u201cYou have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride. You have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. How beautiful is your love my sister, my bride. How much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils, than any spice. Your lips drip nectar, my bride. Honey and milk are under your tongue.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe French did not invent the French kiss. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we\u2019re going to have to wrap up. I need to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014get home? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is what is important, here, though. We do need to figure out how we have conversations about this subject\u2014in church; as Christians; and more importantly, as husband and wife. We\u2019ve got to figure out how to talk about this with one another so that our physical relationship can be all God intended it to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We need to have conversations about this and we need to talk about it when we\u2019re not tired and when we can better understand one another. We had a guest, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, who talked about the importance of communication between husbands and wives in this area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, Tim Gardner is a speaker and a writer. He wrote a book called <em>Sacred Sex<\/em>. He made an important point about the fact that our sexual relationship is really tied to how effectively we are communicating with one another in marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> In the business world, we talk often about meta-communication, where that\u2019s not just how you communicate\u2014it\u2019s what you think about communication \/ it\u2019s what you think the purpose of communication is. I started thinking about that in connection to sex. We have to realize that everything that wanders through our days and our minds affects what we think about sex or even how we experience sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo meta-sex is understanding that what goes on at breakfast affects our sexual intimacy. What I think about sex during the day; what I see during the day; what happened to me 15 years ago, if I have not dealt with it\u2014all of that affects sex. Meta-sex is realizing that everything I think, do, and respond\u2014everything that I have created in my mind\u2014impacts the sexual experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>For you and Amy, as your marriage progressed, there was something taking place in your marriage that was causing her to be able to keep her focus off of marital intimacy and oneness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I appreciate you bringing that up. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you were the one who wrote about it! That\u2019s one of the problems about being\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014with her permission, I might add; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014being an author. You tell these stories, and then you are going to be asked about it by some radio interviewer. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It is out there forever\u2014that is exactly right. I look back on Amy\u2014and we are getting close to 20 years\u2014I was a real clod in this whole area for a lot of years\u2014still a clod in a lot of ways. I was fascinated, as wives will think their husbands are, with sex\u2014but learning about it\u2014\u201cWhat was God saying?\u201d\u2014and always reading books on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife, being much more practical and grounded than me in a lot of ways, was always concerned about our finances. She was a school teacher \/ I was a youth minister\u2014so we were always keeping an eye on things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would say: \u201cWhat about the budget? Have you\u2014we need to talk about the budget. What about this?\u201d I would always say: \u201cYes; yes; yes! But let me tell you about what I read about sex.\u201d One day, it was the proverbial board between the eyes when she said, \u201cHoney, I wish you cared as much about our finances as you do about our sex life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the stop-me-in-my-tracks comment of: \u201cYou know what? She\u2019s right! She\u2019s exactly right. I need to deal with what is important to <em>her<\/em> \/ important to our family. But this is an issue that I am ignoring\u2014that she is trying to get my attention.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I had to understand was that was hurting our sex life, that was hurting our intimacy, that was hurting our entire relationship; because I was not paying attention to something that was vitally important to her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I can imagine there is a guy listening to us, right now, who\u2019s going, Bob: \u201cI balance my checkbook. I am cool\u2014I got that covered! I\u2019m taking care of my wife.\u201d Well, if that is not her need, then what is? Is it for you to pray with her on a daily basis?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014or lead your family, spiritually?\u2014or maybe just ask her the question: \u201cSweetheart, what are your top two or three needs, right now, that I can pray for you about?\u2014that I can maybe think about meeting? Would you share with me the top three needs you have so I can better understand who you are and nourish, cherish, love and honor you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It may be simple things like: \u201cDid you take out the trash like I asked you to?\u201d or \u201cDo you put away things after you get them out of the refrigerator like I\u2019ve asked you to?\u201d This matters when it comes to our intimacy relationship, because it all gets mixed together for our wives; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does. I am kind of debating on whether to tell this story or not\u2014if I can tell it appropriately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that long ago, Barbara and I had set aside some time to be together\u2014kind of on the topic of what we are talking about here. We are laying there\u2014I had kissed her a couple of times; we had some conversation; and I kissed her a couple more times\u2014and she said, \u201cWhen are you going to get your knee operated on?\u201d [Laughter] I looked at her and I burst out laughing. Now, Bob, she was <em>dead<\/em> serious; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>: Yes\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>: I was not making fun of her question; but instantly, she kind of realized the humor of the moment as well. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I want some of you newlyweds to hear: \u201cFour decades later, you are not going to have this whole thing figured out at all;\u201d okay? There are random thoughts that ignite, electronically, across the gray matter of the brain\u2014or maybe it did not come from the brain of all\u2014I do not know where it comes from; but anyway, you have to maintain your sense of humor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? Just enjoy one another and the relationship and do not take yourself or your spouse too seriously.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Being in the moment can mean different things to different people; can\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It can. [Laughter] Sometimes, getting to that moment can take a little longer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In fact, that reminds me of a story you and Barbara shared about one time when you were trying to set the mood. The mood just did not get there for Barbara; right?\u2014is not that how this happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly how it went down. You know, it is just really interesting\u2014telling a story on radio and then to having to live it down. It is a part of our story though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> For us, we really discovered how different we were, romantically, when we were invited to go on a trip to Mazatl\u00e1n, Mexico, with some friends. We thought: \u201cThis is going to be a <em>great<\/em> trip to get away. We really need the time away.\u201d We found someone to keep our two kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You could rekindle the romance!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes! We took off on a plane. It just felt like: \u201cThis will do it. This will be okay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cLeave our problems behind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cGet some\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And we both felt a sense of hope, I think, as we flew off into the sunset, that the difference in circumstances \/ the difference in location was going to be enough to spark what we had had before. We got there\u2014I think we got there late at night\u2014put our stuff in the hotel room, went to bed, slept in the next day, got up and did sight-seeing with this other couple, just hung out on the beach\u2014but we would be with somebody else. We didn\u2019t have a lot of time, as I remember, to actually talk and connect\u2014just the two of us that day\u2014which, for me, is really, really important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As a man, this is where I first missed her; because: \u201cHey, you know, we are together with another couple. We are in a romantic place. I mean\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u201cWhat more do you need?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right! \u201cWe\u2019ll have dinner together tonight; we\u2019ll talk.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019m guessing that you were thinking: \u201cRomantic location at the beach\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh my goodness! I mean, it was spectacular!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You thought it was a piece of cake because of the location\u2014where we were, we removed from the stress of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014or removed from the kids\u2014I mean, that is how you spell \u201cromance.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you were probably thinking, \u201cWe\u2019ll probably have a romantic dinner together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> We had a nice dinner with our friends, and we really did have a good time. And we, you know, the weather was perfect, and the breeze was blowing off the beach, and there\u2019s this little band playing music. I mean, it really was movie-like in supplying the ingredients that we all think need to be there to have romance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe difference is that I still needed to connect, emotionally. I wanted to talk\u2014I wanted to feel like we could connect and that he could hear what I was feeling. I was looking for time to talk about all the things and for him to hear me say some of the things that I needed to say. I was not even sure what they all were either, to tell you the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And meanwhile, here I am, taking a look at the waves\u2014I am going: \u201cLet\u2019s surf!\u201d It was magnificent\u2014I do remember this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I do too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The evening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014it was beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014was just\u2014it was the stuff, as Barbara said, that movies are made of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; so what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> We got back to the room. I knew enough, having been married five years\u2014I knew enough to know that my husband wanted to make love. I knew that we needed to. Deep down inside, I knew this was\u2014that we did and we needed to connect again. What I didn\u2019t realize is how difficult that was going to be because I still\u2014even though we\u2019d had all the wonderful ingredients that Hollywood says you need to have to have romance \/ even though all that had been present\u2014I still didn\u2019t feel connected to him on an emotional level. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I learned, in hindsight, is that I need to feel connected with him and to feel a sense of intimacy <em>before<\/em> I engage in physical intercourse; whereas, he engages in physical intercourse to get that intimacy. We\u2019re both just coming at the same need\u2014which is intimacy in a marriage\u2014we\u2019re just coming at it from opposite directions. We are going the same way \/ we\u2019re just coming from opposite directions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat night, in the hotel room, even though I <em>knew<\/em> that that was what he needed and what we needed, I just couldn\u2019t get there. It was like I was two dimensional. Part of me wanted to be there but part of me could not get there. I did not know how to reconcile the two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It seems to me, as you shared that story with me, did not something get thrown in the hotel room?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A bottle of lotion got tossed\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tossed! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u2014with vigor\u2014I was angry. I did not handle it as an adult should have handled it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I\u2019d like to say to the guys: \u201cMen, your wife spells <em>romance<\/em> R-E-L-A-T-I-O-N-S-H-I-P\u2014relationship. When you try to spell it \u201csex,\u201d you are spelling it the way <em>you<\/em> spell romance.
