It doesn\u2019t sound like a quick-fix, and it\u2019s not\u2014it is hard work. And <em>yet<\/em>, if you choose <em>not<\/em> to give grace in a marriage, then, you\u2019re signing up for a mediocre relationship\u2014when you can have the power of God in your relationship, which is <em>wonderful<\/em>!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, January 11<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. We\u2019ll talk today to Tim and Darcy Kimmel about how we get grace and how we give grace in marriage. You know, the subject this week\u2014talking about grace in marriage\u2014who doesn\u2019t like that idea; right?\u00a0 Who would say, \u201cI don\u2019t want grace in my marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Somebody doing good to me that I didn\u2019t deserve or that I didn\u2019t earn. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>The problem is\u2014we want it \/ it\u2019s just the\u2014it\u2019s just the doing of it. It\u2019s just the having of it that makes it hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ve not been trained. We haven\u2019t been mentored in what it means to give grace to another broken human being. Pull up a chair, get a cup of coffee, stay away from the cinnamon buns, and just; [Laughter] you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the grace?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the grace?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the grace here?! I was astounded because we could take a poll \/ a live poll in the conversation\u2014how many of them had been to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and how many hadn\u2019t. Tim, a story from one\u2014from a conference you\u2019ve spoken at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s something that I\u2019ve seen. I have seen people who\u2014the only reason they are there is because their attorney says, \u201cI will not let you sign these papers until you, at least, go to this thing\u2014give it one more shot.\u201d\u00a0 And they go out there. They see that God had a plan for their love, from day one, that they had turned their backs on. They open their arms to that, and then, God does\u2014He just <em>washes<\/em> over them. I have seen Him rescue marriages that were on life support\u2014over and over again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, here is the cool thing\u2014if He can do that to marriages that are on life support, just think what He can do to one that is clomping along pretty well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; you\u2019re running the race well. It\u2019ll put some wind\u2014some fresh wind in your sails. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>For Darcy and I, we\u2014our standard prayer of praise, at the end of a FamilyLife conference: \u201cLord, thanks so much for letting us be on this team; because we needed this, this weekend, for our own lives.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You guys have a real burden to see grace in marriages. You said earlier that love is kind of what we all think is at the center of a marriage\u2014and really grace should be at the center\u2014not that love is unimportant, but love\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Grace gets you through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Grace determines the quality of the love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And in your book, you outline freedoms that come with grace. What are the freedoms that you talk about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Well, there are four freedoms that God shows us in His grace. We kind of outline each one of those. We could dial in on one or two of them and specifically illustrate what they look like\u2014but the freedom to be different,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I love that one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014the freedom to be vulnerable, the freedom to be candid, and the freedom to make mistakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the freedom to be different\u2014this couple got married. We all have quirks about us. We all have these idiosyncrasies that you don\u2019t even realize until you get married and you find out, \u201cYou know\u2014that\u2019s very annoying.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to say this delicately, but they got married in the wintertime. They had never slept together until their marriage\u2014and because it was cold, they ended up like a lot of couples do with nothing on, but she kept on a pair of tube socks. She just felt that was great. Each time she knew that that was going to happen, she would put on these tube socks. She just got attached to those\u2014almost like a security blanket\u2014to that time with her husband. This continued for year, after year, after year. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Even in the summer?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Even in the summer. She\u2014and they\u2019d go on vacation. She would take them with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they were going someplace, where they thought something might happen, she\u2019d take them with them. Well, these things\u2014they lost their elasticity. They were pretty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014pretty grody-looking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014after years. They started to really become a source of <em>annoyance<\/em> to the husband. He got to where this was a turn off to him. She said: \u201cCome on, don\u2019t worry about it. It\u2019s just my tube socks. Everything is going to be fine.\u201d\u00a0 So, finally, they ended up in front of a counselor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Really, over the socks?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Over the socks. The counselor didn\u2019t know why they were there\u2014it was, \u201cWe need to see you.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he says, \u201cWhy are you here?\u201d\u00a0 The guy went right into this tirade about the tube socks\u2014and from the beginning\u2014she might have nothing on but the tube socks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the guy listened and finally said\u2014the counselor said: \u201cAre you nuts?!\u00a0 I know guys that would <em>kill<\/em> for a pair of tube socks like that for their wife. If we could figure out how to market those things and what they are doing for your wife, we could be <em>zillionaires<\/em>. Are you crazy?!\u00a0 You\u2019re a very fortunate man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you would just look at these things through a different lens\u201d\u2014and he was talking about the <em>grace<\/em> lens\u2014\u201cthan you look at them. Just give your wife the freedom to be different. So, she likes those things on\u2014so what?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat was funny is\u2014after he finally got\u2014changed his perspective on this\u2014she\u2019d get into her car, and he\u2019d put them over the rearview mirror; or she\u2019d go to the microwave, and they\u2019d be in there. [Laughter] Anyway, they had a lot of fun with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, Mary Ann and I have said to one another, many times over the years: \u201cDifferent is not wrong. It\u2019s different.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>It\u2019s different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But the instinct is: \u201cIf you are doing it differently than me, you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cwrong.\u201d And by the way, this is where grace leaves the building so often\u2014that we keep score. We think we have a right, now, to play that game with you\u2014and withhold, or punish, or whatever. This happens over and over again. We speak to this at FamilyLife all the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>There\u2019s arrogance, though, that is behind that idea that: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cMy way is the right way \/ your way is the wrong way.\u201d That\u2019s where we\u2019ve just had to look at each other and say: \u201cOkay, you do it differently than I do. That\u2019s\u2014your way is not wrong. It <em>feels<\/em> wrong to me, but it\u2019s not wrong. It\u2019s just different.\u201d\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m talking about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do know what you\u2019re talking about. I was smiling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were nodding your head there?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is more than one way to load the dishwasher; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is Barbara\u2019s way\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and the wrong way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and there\u2019s\u2014[Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014and the right way. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014and the right way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Are you the right-way person, Darcy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>I pretty much am, especially in the kitchen; but I think opposites do attract. It is fun when you are dating \/ when you are first married; but then, it just wears on you. Like you said\u2014you become self-righteous. You start to assign some sort of almost moral value\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014to the differences. Then, you get fuel behind your self-righteousness. Then, it becomes a real point of contention. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things we teach at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway is that differences are God\u2019s new capacities that He brings to us in our spouse. Barbara has brought all kinds of new capacities to me in her differences. She likes museums. Wherever she goes, she makes things beautiful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She likes gardening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She does like gardening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve learned to like gardening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have learned to like gardening. I want to talk about the freedom to be <em>candid<\/em>, because it sounds a little like the freedom to insult one another\u2014you know what I mean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Well, you know, there is a difference between honesty\u2014like <em>Jerry Springer <\/em>honesty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014and candor. Candor always has the best interest of the other person at heart. It\u2019s part of communication in marriage. So many times, we hold our spouse responsible for expectations that we have\u2014they have <em>no idea<\/em> we have of them. Yet, we get mad over that\u2014thinking they should know this: \u201cThis is something that they should know about me or the circumstance.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we would just, in a loving way, say: \u201cI need to tell you something. I need to tell you how that makes me feel,\u201d or \u201cI need to tell you what my expectation is,\u201d without being mad about it to begin with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Darcy\u2014how has that, theoretically, shown up in your relationship with Tim?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Theoretically?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Nothing theoretical about it!\u2014but the Bible gives us guidelines: \u201cSpeaking the truth in love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cin love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Of course! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Darcy: <\/strong>And working toward unity\u2014not victory\u2014when we have a conflict. Conflict is inevitable in every marriage. The thing you want to do is to solve the problem\u2014not to become the one that\u2019s right and they are wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Don\u2019t you think most of us have things that we think, in our own heart or mind, that if we thought: \u201cIf our spouse really knew I was thinking this, or knew that I liked that, or knew that this\u2014my spouse would be disappointed in me. Therefore, I\u2019ll just not share that. I\u2019ll be less than candid because I have to protect myself and protect the relationship\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Yes. And that\u2019s where that secure love comes in that we talked about. We have to feel <em>safe<\/em> in our marriage. That\u2019s what grace does, because we know\u2014if our spouse is loving us the way God loves us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014He knows all that crud in our life\u2014then, they are going to have forgiveness, patience, and a love that endures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about another delicate subject; alright?\u00a0 You speak of grace results in the freedom to be vulnerable. I\u2019m just wondering, \u201cHow does grace show up in the bedroom?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>You know the reason we get married\u2014let\u2019s just be real\u2014everybody listening. There is basically <em>one reason<\/em> why we need a marriage license in God\u2019s eyes\u2014that\u2019s for the sexual intimacy side of it\u2014because none of the other stuff requires a marriage license. Now, obviously, our marriages are far more than that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014but this is the defining feature that you don\u2019t share with anybody else. Yet, on this one, this causes more grief to couples. I think this is where grace can save the day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>In our own marriage, we\u2019ve gone through the spring of love, the hot summer love, the autumn, and the winter love when it comes too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There have been cold fronts that have moved in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>There have been cold fronts, especially with children and all that; but I think, in a grace-filled marriage, you have the other person\u2019s best interests at heart\u2014so, you\u2019re available. You\u2019re not always on the same page; but I know in our relationship, we\u2019ve just made the commitment\u2014we call it convenience store sex. You know\u2014convenience stores are open 24\/7, 365. If you have that attitude, it\u2019s a very gracious response to one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Darcy, that sounds theoretic. There are guys who just turned up the radio and texted their wife and said, \u201cAre you listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201c24\/7, Sweetheart!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>By the way, no one is giving license to sexual addiction\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that is not gracious \/ or taking advantage of the other person\u2014that\u2019s not gracious. Everybody understands people are sick or whatever\u2014we understand that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>And there is no permission to <em>demand<\/em> it either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was what I was getting ready to say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>No, no, no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is no such thing as sex-on-demand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>No; there isn\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s not\u2014that\u2019s not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014because that\u2019s not gracious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>That\u2019s not gracious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s not marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the idea of convenience store sex\u2014what about those days you\u2019re exhausted \/ you can barely stay awake\u2014and Tim says: \u201cStore open?\u00a0 I just need a quick purchase here\u201d?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Well, if I was operating in grace, I would do whatever I could to meet that need. Now, sometimes, you can\u2019t\u2014you\u2019re sick. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes; but it wouldn\u2019t be gracious, at that point. You know, this is an area that causes incredible, enormous disappointment and grief. I think that so many couples punish one another through their intimate life. They demand or they defraud. They manipulate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat does <em>not<\/em> reflect the heart of God\u2019s grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we just decided, early on, was: \u201cLook, neither one of us have the right to take advantage of each other on this, and we don\u2019t want to\u201d; but I can\u2019t expect her needs to be on the same page as mine at any time. We just said: \u201cHey, one thing we like about convenience stores is they are always open. They are always available.\u201d\u00a0 We are just saying, as a gracious couple: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just take this attitude of just always being available to each other?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Be generous instead of stingy in this area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes. And don\u2019t keep score on this thing\u2014just be generous. And then, you can have a much more comfortable thing. We don\u2019t have to play the guilt game, or the score-keeping game, and all that stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can we just say the Bible speaks to this specifically in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 7, when it says: \u201cThe husband\u2019s body is not his own. The wife\u2019s body is not her own.\u201d\u00a0 You are co-owners of each other\u2019s bodies. And it says, \u201cStop depriving one another\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u201cStop depriving.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cunless it\u2019s for the purpose of prayer.\u201d\u00a0 Most people who are depriving are not doing it because they are in a season of prayer. They are doing it because they are in a season of anger or a season of disregard for the other person; but it says, \u201cCome together.\u201d\u00a0 This is a part of the blessing of God. We need to look and say: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 That passage\u2014that applies to my marriage. I\u2019ve got to figure out how to obey.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going back to the definition of grace that I mentioned earlier this week with Tim and Darcy. It said that, \u201cGod\u2019s grace toward us confronts our rebellion and indifference with an inexhaustible capacity to forgive and bless.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand bless.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I think you\u2019ve really got to have both in the sexual dimension of the marriage relationship\u2014the ability to forgive because we will hurt each other \/ but there is a sense of blessing here\u2014of blessing the other person and doing good to them, whether they\u2019ve been good to you or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes. When we do that, we\u2019re reflecting the heart of the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we\u2019re trying to say\u2014what that passage from 1 Corinthians 7 and your definition there\u2014is: \u201cThis is what grace looks like. The world does not relate to this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I\u2019m on a performance basis with God, I do not want anything to do with this kind of an attitude toward my spouse. But when couples say, \u201cNo; I want to reflect God\u2019s heart toward my spouse,\u201d then, the very unique thing to us\u2014the main reason we all got married was to have this freedom and this blessing, before God, to be sexually intimate with somebody we dearly love. Then, all this does is\u2014the stock value goes up on that one. You don\u2019t have to figure that this is something that is going to fade off the radar screen as you get older. Actually, it can get better and more fulfilling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>So many people think that\u2014when they hear this concept of a grace-filled marriage\u2014that it sounds like a lot of work and giving up a lot of my rights. It doesn\u2019t sound like a quick-fix\u2014and it\u2019s not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s hard work. And <em>yet<\/em>, if you choose <em>not<\/em> to give grace in a marriage, then, you are signing up for mediocre, at best. Who wants a mediocre relationship?\u2014when you can have the power of God in your relationship and experience marriage like God meant it to be, which is <em>wonderful<\/em>!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the only thing that makes it hard to be a dispenser of grace in a marriage relationship is if you haven\u2019t gotten filled up with grace in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Darcy: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s why it\u2019s hard. If you\u2019re finding it hard to dispense grace to your spouse, you need to ask the question, \u201cAm I filled up with it?\u201d\u2014because\u2014if you are filled up with it, it flows out. If you\u2019re not, it doesn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>You know, I went to an event, where there were other speakers. I was kind of a newbie to speaking out there. I went to dinner with a couple of guys, and they were talking about their marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were talking with each other\u2014I\u2019m just listening. They both were struggling in their marriage. Then, they got into their intimate lives. They talked about how little intimacy they were enjoying with their spouse. Then, later on, they started to talk about how many times they had been hit on, as they travel\u2014that women come on to them and so forth. <br><br>Well, I came home; and I was reflecting with Darcy. I said: \u201cI must have \u2018Geek\u2019 written all over me because, in all of these years of travelling, I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> once had a woman come on to me. I must be the biggest idiot-looking guy.\u201d\u00a0 She said: \u201cOh! That has nothing to do with it. You have a red light on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are sending signals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>They are hungry! We\u2019ve had our issues and times where we don\u2019t want to see each other, and touch each other, or be around each other\u2014like anybody else. We have our bad days; but for the most part, we said, \u201cLet\u2019s not send the other person around hungry.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I think a lot of things just fall into place. Like you were saying, Bob: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhen grace is in there, a lot of this stuff becomes academic. It just happens.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And when a couple of people are following Jesus Christ, in a marriage relationship, it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s going to be perfect\u2014as you guys have illustrated and as we have illustrated many times, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014but what it does mean is we learn the spiritual discipline of death to self,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014which is how grace can ultimately\u2014back to your point, Bob\u2014it\u2019s how we can be a partaker of grace from God. Then, we can be a dispenser of grace to our spouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Tim, Darcy, I just appreciate you guys\u2014your faithfulness to one another and in ministry over the years. Thanks for all you are doing for marriages and families through Family Matters<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. I just appreciate your friendship as well. they hear this concept of a grace-filled marriage\u2014that it sounds like a lot of work and giving up a lot of my rights. It doesn\u2019t sound like a quick-fix, and it\u2019s not\u2014it is hard work. And <em>yet<\/em>, if you choose <em>not<\/em> to give grace in a marriage, then, you\u2019re signing up for a mediocre relationship\u2014when you can have the power of God in your relationship, which is <em>wonderful<\/em>!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, January 11<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ll talk today to Tim and Darcy Kimmel about how we get grace and how we give grace in marriage. You know, the subject this week\u2014talking about grace in marriage\u2014who doesn\u2019t like that idea; right?\u00a0 Who would say, \u201cI don\u2019t want grace in my marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Somebody doing good to me that I didn\u2019t deserve or that I didn\u2019t earn. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>The problem is\u2014we want it \/ it\u2019s just the\u2014it\u2019s just the doing of it. It\u2019s just the having of it that makes it hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019ve not been trained. We haven\u2019t been mentored in what it means to give grace to another broken human being. Pull up a chair, get a cup of coffee, stay away from the cinnamon buns, and just; [Laughter] you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the grace?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the grace?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Where\u2019s the grace here?! I was astounded because we could take a poll \/ a live poll in the conversation\u2014how many of them had been to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and how many hadn\u2019t. Half hadn\u2019t been to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. Tim, a story from one\u2014from a conference you\u2019ve spoken at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s something that I\u2019ve seen. I have seen people who\u2014the only reason they are there is because their attorney says, \u201cI will not let you sign these papers until you, at least, go to this thing\u2014give it one more shot.\u201d\u00a0 And they go out there. They see that God had a plan for their love, from day one, that they had turned their backs on. They open their arms to that, and then, God does\u2014He just <em>washes<\/em> over them. I have seen Him rescue marriages that were on life support\u2014over and over again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, here is the cool thing\u2014if He can do that to marriages that are on life support, just think what He can do to one that is clomping along pretty well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; you\u2019re running the race well. It\u2019ll put some wind\u2014some fresh wind in your sails. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>For Darcy and I, we\u2014our standard prayer of praise, at the end of a FamilyLife conference: \u201cLord, thanks so much for letting us be on this team; because we needed this, this weekend, for our own lives.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You guys have a real burden to see grace in marriages. You said earlier that love is kind of what we all think is at the center of a marriage\u2014and really grace should be at the center\u2014not that love is unimportant, but love\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Grace gets you through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Grace determines the quality of the love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And in your book, you outline freedoms that come with grace. What are the freedoms that you talk about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Well, there are four freedoms that God shows us in His grace. We kind of outline each one of those. We could dial in on one or two of them and specifically illustrate what they look like\u2014but the freedom to be different,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I love that one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014the freedom to be vulnerable, the freedom to be candid, and the freedom to make mistakes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the freedom to be different\u2014this couple got married. We all have quirks about us. We all have these idiosyncrasies that you don\u2019t even realize until you get married and you find out, \u201cYou know\u2014that\u2019s very annoying.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to say this delicately, but they got married in the wintertime. They had never slept together until their marriage\u2014and because it was cold, they ended up like a lot of couples do with nothing on, but she kept on a pair of tube socks. She just felt that was great. Each time she knew that that was going to happen, she would put on these tube socks. She just got attached to those\u2014almost like a security blanket\u2014to that time with her husband. This continued for year, after year, after year. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Even in the summer?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Even in the summer. She\u2014and they\u2019d go on vacation. She would take them with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they were going someplace, where they thought something might happen, she\u2019d take them with them. Well, these things\u2014they lost their elasticity. They were pretty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014pretty grody-looking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014after years. They started to really become a source of <em>annoyance<\/em> to the husband. He got to where this was a turn off to him. She said: \u201cCome on, don\u2019t worry about it. It\u2019s just my tube socks. Everything is going to be fine.\u201d\u00a0 So, finally, they ended up in front of a counselor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Really, over the socks?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Over the socks. The counselor didn\u2019t know why they were there\u2014it was, \u201cWe need to see you.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he says, \u201cWhy are you here?\u201d\u00a0 The guy went right into this tirade about the tube socks\u2014and from the beginning\u2014she might have nothing on but the tube socks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the guy listened and finally said\u2014the counselor said: \u201cAre you nuts?!\u00a0 I know guys that would <em>kill<\/em> for a pair of tube socks like that for their wife. If we could figure out how to market those things and what they are doing for your wife, we could be <em>zillionaires<\/em>. Are you crazy?!\u00a0 You\u2019re a very fortunate man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you would just look at these things through a different lens\u201d\u2014and he was talking about the <em>grace<\/em> lens\u2014\u201cthan you look at them. Just give your wife the freedom to be different. So, she likes those things on\u2014so what?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat was funny is\u2014after he finally got\u2014changed his perspective on this\u2014she\u2019d get into her car, and he\u2019d put them over the rearview mirror; or she\u2019d go to the microwave, and they\u2019d be in there. [Laughter] Anyway, they had a lot of fun with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, Mary Ann and I have said to one another, many times over the years: \u201cDifferent is not wrong. It\u2019s different.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>It\u2019s different. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But the instinct is: \u201cIf you are doing it differently than me, you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cwrong.\u201d And by the way, this is where grace leaves the building so often\u2014that we keep score. We think we have a right, now, to play that game with you\u2014and withhold, or punish, or whatever. This happens over and over again. We speak to this at FamilyLife all the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>There\u2019s arrogance, though, that is behind that idea that: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cMy way is the right way \/ your way is the wrong way.\u201d That\u2019s where we\u2019ve just had to look at each other and say: \u201cOkay, you do it differently than I do. That\u2019s\u2014your way is not wrong. It <em>feels<\/em> wrong to me, but it\u2019s not wrong. It\u2019s just different.\u201d\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m talking about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do know what you\u2019re talking about. It is fun when you are dating \/ when you are first married; but then, it just wears on you. Like you said\u2014you become self-righteous. You start to assign some sort of almost moral value\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014to the differences. Then, you get fuel behind your self-righteousness. Barbara has brought all kinds of new capacities to me in her differences. She likes museums. Wherever she goes, she makes things beautiful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She likes gardening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She does like gardening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve learned to like gardening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have learned to like gardening. I want to talk about the freedom to be <em>candid<\/em>, because it sounds a little like the freedom to insult one another\u2014you know what I mean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Well, you know, there is a difference between honesty\u2014like <em>Jerry Springer <\/em>honesty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014and candor. Candor always has the best interest of the other person at heart. It\u2019s part of communication in marriage. So many times, we hold our spouse responsible for expectations that we have\u2014they have <em>no idea<\/em> we have of them. Yet, we get mad over that\u2014thinking they should know this: \u201cThis is something that they should know about me or the circumstance.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we would just, in a loving way, say: \u201cI need to tell you something. I need to tell you how that makes me feel,\u201d or \u201cI need to tell you what my expectation is,\u201d without being mad about it to begin with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Darcy\u2014how has that, theoretically, shown up in your relationship with Tim?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Theoretically?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Nothing theoretical about it!\u2014but the Bible gives us guidelines: \u201cSpeaking the truth in love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cin love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Of course! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Darcy: <\/strong>And working toward unity\u2014not victory\u2014when we have a conflict. Conflict is inevitable in every marriage. The thing you want to do is to solve the problem\u2014not to become the one that\u2019s right and they are wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Don\u2019t you think most of us have things that we think, in our own heart or mind, that if we thought: \u201cIf our spouse really knew I was thinking this, or knew that I liked that, or knew that this\u2014my spouse would be disappointed in me. Therefore, I\u2019ll just not share that. I\u2019ll be less than candid because I have to protect myself and protect the relationship\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Yes. And that\u2019s where that secure love comes in that we talked about. We have to feel <em>safe<\/em> in our marriage. That\u2019s what grace does, because we know\u2014if our spouse is loving us the way God loves us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014He knows all that crud in our life\u2014then, they are going to have forgiveness, patience, and a love that endures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s talk about another delicate subject; alright?\u00a0 You speak of grace results in the freedom to be vulnerable. I\u2019m just wondering, \u201cHow does grace show up in the bedroom?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>You know the reason we get married\u2014let\u2019s just be real\u2014everybody listening. There is basically <em>one reason<\/em> why we need a marriage license in God\u2019s eyes\u2014that\u2019s for the sexual intimacy side of it\u2014because none of the other stuff requires a marriage license. Now, obviously, our marriages are far more than that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014but this is the defining feature that you don\u2019t share with anybody else. Yet, on this one, this causes more grief to couples. I think this is where grace can save the day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>In our own marriage, we\u2019ve gone through the spring of love, the hot summer love, the autumn, and the winter love when it comes too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There have been cold fronts that have moved in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>There have been cold fronts, especially with children and all that; but I think, in a grace-filled marriage, you have the other person\u2019s best interests at heart\u2014so, you\u2019re available. You\u2019re not always on the same page; but I know in our relationship, we\u2019ve just made the commitment\u2014we call it convenience store sex. You know\u2014convenience stores are open 24\/7, 365. If you have that attitude, it\u2019s a very gracious response to one another. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Darcy, that sounds theoretic. There are guys who just turned up the radio and texted their wife and said, \u201cAre you listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201c24\/7, Sweetheart!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>By the way, no one is giving license to sexual addiction\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that is not gracious \/ or taking advantage of the other person\u2014that\u2019s not gracious. Everybody understands people are sick or whatever\u2014we understand that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>And there is no permission to <em>demand<\/em> it either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was what I was getting ready to say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>No, no, no. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There is no such thing as sex-on-demand. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>No; there isn\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s not\u2014that\u2019s not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>\u2014because that\u2019s not gracious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>That\u2019s not gracious. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that\u2019s not marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, the idea of convenience store sex\u2014what about those days you\u2019re exhausted \/ you can barely stay awake\u2014and Tim says: \u201cStore open?\u00a0 I just need a quick purchase here\u201d?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>Well, if I was operating in grace, I would do whatever I could to meet that need. Now, sometimes, you can\u2019t\u2014you\u2019re sick. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes; but it wouldn\u2019t be gracious, at that point. You know, this is an area that causes incredible, enormous disappointment and grief. I think that so many couples punish one another through their intimate life. They demand or they defraud. They manipulate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat does <em>not<\/em> reflect the heart of God\u2019s grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we just decided, early on, was: \u201cLook, neither one of us have the right to take advantage of each other on this, and we don\u2019t want to\u201d; but I can\u2019t expect her needs to be on the same page as mine at any time. We just said: \u201cHey, one thing we like about convenience stores is they are always open. They are always available.\u201d\u00a0 We are just saying, as a gracious couple: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just take this attitude of just always being available to each other?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Be generous instead of stingy in this area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes. And don\u2019t keep score on this thing\u2014just be generous. And then, you can have a much more comfortable thing. We don\u2019t have to play the guilt game, or the score-keeping game, and all that stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Can we just say the Bible speaks to this specifically in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 7, when it says: \u201cThe husband\u2019s body is not his own. The wife\u2019s body is not her own.\u201d\u00a0 You are co-owners of each other\u2019s bodies. And it says, \u201cStop depriving one another\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u201cStop depriving.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cunless it\u2019s for the purpose of prayer.\u201d\u00a0 Most people who are depriving are not doing it because they are in a season of prayer. They are doing it because they are in a season of anger or a season of disregard for the other person; but it says, \u201cCome together.\u201d\u00a0 This is a part of the blessing of God. We need to look and say: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 That passage\u2014that applies to my marriage. I\u2019ve got to figure out how to obey.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going back to the definition of grace that I mentioned earlier this week with Tim and Darcy. It said that, \u201cGod\u2019s grace toward us confronts our rebellion and indifference with an inexhaustible capacity to forgive and bless.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand bless.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I think you\u2019ve really got to have both in the sexual dimension of the marriage relationship\u2014the ability to forgive because we will hurt each other \/ but there is a sense of blessing here\u2014of blessing the other person and doing good to them, whether they\u2019ve been good to you or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes. When we do that, we\u2019re reflecting the heart of the gospel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we\u2019re trying to say\u2014what that passage from 1 Corinthians 7 and your definition there\u2014is: \u201cThis is what grace looks like. The world does not relate to this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I\u2019m on a performance basis with God, I do not want anything to do with this kind of an attitude toward my spouse. But when couples say, \u201cNo; I want to reflect God\u2019s heart toward my spouse,\u201d then, the very unique thing to us\u2014the main reason we all got married was to have this freedom and this blessing, before God, to be sexually intimate with somebody we dearly love. Then, all this does is\u2014the stock value goes up on that one. You don\u2019t have to figure that this is something that is going to fade off the radar screen as you get older. Actually, it can get better and more fulfilling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Darcy: <\/strong>So many people think that\u2014when they hear this concept of a grace-filled marriage\u2014that it sounds like a lot of work and giving up a lot of my rights. It doesn\u2019t sound like a quick-fix\u2014and it\u2019s not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s hard work. And <em>yet<\/em>, if you choose <em>not<\/em> to give grace in a marriage, then, you are signing up for mediocre, at best. Who wants a mediocre relationship?\u2014when you can have the power of God in your relationship and experience marriage like God meant it to be, which is <em>wonderful<\/em>!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the only thing that makes it hard to be a dispenser of grace in a marriage relationship is if you haven\u2019t gotten filled up with grace in the first place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Darcy: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s why it\u2019s hard. If you\u2019re finding it hard to dispense grace to your spouse, you need to ask the question, \u201cAm I filled up with it?\u201d\u2014because\u2014if you are filled up with it, it flows out. If you\u2019re not, it doesn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>You know, I went to an event, where there were other speakers. I was kind of a newbie to speaking out there. I went to dinner with a couple of guys, and they were talking about their marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were talking with each other\u2014I\u2019m just listening. They both were struggling in their marriage. Then, they got into their intimate lives. They talked about how little intimacy they were enjoying with their spouse. Then, later on, they started to talk about how many times they had been hit on, as they travel\u2014that women come on to them and so forth. <br><br>Well, I came home; and I was reflecting with Darcy. I said: \u201cI must have \u2018Geek\u2019 written all over me because, in all of these years of travelling, I\u2019ve <em>never<\/em> once had a woman come on to me. I must be the biggest idiot-looking guy.\u201d\u00a0 She said: \u201cOh! That has nothing to do with it. You have a red light on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They are sending signals. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim: <\/strong>They are hungry! We\u2019ve had our issues and times where we don\u2019t want to see each other, and touch each other, or be around each other\u2014like anybody else. We have our bad days; but for the most part, we said, \u201cLet\u2019s not send the other person around hungry.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I think a lot of things just fall into place. Like you were saying, Bob: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhen grace is in there, a lot of this stuff becomes academic.
