Gloria Furman thinks it\u2019s time for us, as parents, to start looking at our assignment through new lenses\u2014have a new priority for how we parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll hear more about that today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have a question for you, Bob. Have you ever thought of yourself as being just a dad?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Just a dad\u2014I remember thinking, \u201cI am a dad,\u201d when our daughter, Amy, was born. For the first time, it kind of hit me, \u201cI\u2019m a dad.\u201d I don\u2019t think about \u201cjust a dad\u201d\u2014I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve thought of myself that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I have never had that thought; however, there are women today, who are moms, who will describe themselves, \u201cI\u2019m just a mom.\u201d If you\u2019re <em>just<\/em> a mom\u2014that\u2019s what way you think about it\u2014you\u2019re in for a <em>delightful<\/em> surprise today, because Gloria Furman has a great new book called <em>Missional Motherhood<\/em>. She\u2019s going to lift your sights \/ your identity out of the mundane to the glorious. Am I right, Gloria?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I hope so! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; the book delivers!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Gloria\u2019s been on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> before. She and her husband have four children. They live in Dubai, where they have a started a church, Redeemer\u2014has over a thousand people attending from more than 60 countries. She is, as I mentioned, a mom of four on a mission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDescribe what you\u2019re talking about when you attack this response, \u201cI\u2019m just a mom.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I do attack that response. I loaded two really big cannons and fired everything I can think of out of those cannons toward that\u2014the one cannon being a biblical theology of motherhood in the first half of that book, and in the second half of the book a systematic look at the person and work of Jesus Christ. My big premise is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait\u2014wait, wait, wait. You just blew people\u2019s minds: \u201cI\u2019m talking about motherhood; so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, she said cannons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>And I\u2019m firing cannons! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201c\u2014and I fired cannons with an Old Testament survey and the systematic theology of Jesus to get to motherhood\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019m getting there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake me there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give her a chance, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>If God has created all things for Him, by Him, through Him\u2014all of this unto Jesus\u2014and motherhood is part of His mission, then <em>nothing<\/em> that God does could be a trifling \u201cjust\u201d or a demeaning \u201cjust.\u201d God is the Architect of our motherhood, and all of this is for His glory. There\u2019s <em>nothing<\/em> demeaning about it whatsoever. It has eternal purposes in mind and God\u2019s <em>glory<\/em> at the end of it, and all throughout it is the Spirit at work in and among us. So I loaded those two cannons and pointed them directly at that phrase, \u201cI\u2019m just a mom\u201d; and I just fired them. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I love it! When I read it, I literally just kind of cheered\u2014I said: \u201cYes! I really like that!\u201d because we\u2019ve done a lot of broadcasts over the past 24 years, trying to lift moms out of the mundane and give them a biblical view of who they are and why God made them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The exalted role\u2014because it really is true that, when God calls you to be a mom, we\u2019re talking about something that is <em>foundational<\/em> to who we are, as human beings, and giving life to and nurturing the next generation. I mean, really?\u2014is there much more significance than that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; right\u2014nurturing life in the face of death. Just in general, people think there\u2019s something else out there that we ought to be grasping for other than whatever God\u2019s design for our lives might be. That plays itself out in different ways. I could name different examples of different kinds of conversations I\u2019ve had with women about this; but I\u2019m talking to women, <em>in general<\/em>, and not just to people who\u2019ve had biological children. So when I say that women nurture the life that God creates, I also mean to include spiritual life as the Lord Jesus has given us His directive and marching orders for us: \u201cGo therefore and make disciples of all the nations, teaching them to obey everything I\u2019ve commanded, baptizing them\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re making motherhood bigger than just giving biological life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019m reminding us that it\u2019s a verb. We mother and use the synonym, nurture\u2014so nurturing the life that God creates. I came into contact with this pretty early on in my Christian walk, because I was saved in college. The leaders of that little Bible study were two young single women. They <em>mothered<\/em> me, spiritually, and they shared the gospel with me. They shared with me their very lives. As Paul says to the Corinthians, their hearts were wide open to me; and they taught me from the Scriptures who God is, who I am, and how to live rightly in light of the fact that Easter really did happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy own mother mothered me <em>so well<\/em>; and then, when God opened my eyes in college, there were single ladies mothering me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t know this\u2014more than likely, because your kids are younger \/ you\u2019re not ready for a new resource FamilyLife has just created in the past year\u2014but it\u2019s called <em>Passport2Identity<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>, There is one for boys to go through with their father and one for girls to go through with their mother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA part of what we were doing when we put that together was\u2014we talked about, \u201cWhat is the essence of femininity\/masculinity from the Bible?\u201d One of the themes of <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> for girls is that women are nurturers\u2014they do bring forth life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They\u2019re life-givers; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014the very core message you have in your book, <em>Missional Motherhood<\/em>, is calling women outside of defining their lives\u2014you with me?\u2014according to what the world says and according to what the Bible says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cLet\u2019s be a part of joining God and bringing spiritual life to people, not just physical life as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; right. We so often look at what we can see as the limits, and boundaries, and resources for our mothering. We look at our biology, our fertility, our access to fertility treatments, our marriage status even. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when we are new creations in Christ, we have the Spirit of God at our disposal. He is our indwelling Spirit. Through us, Jesus is making disciples of the nations\u2014we are no longer limited: \u201cMy marriage status\u2014I\u2019m single. I can\u2019t make disciples,\u201d\u2014no! You can make disciples. \u201cPhysically, I\u2019m not fit enough,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not healthy enough to have children,\u201d\u2014but you are spiritually fit, through Christ, to make disciples. Spiritual mothering is the groundwork\/the calling for our mothering work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So as you look in the mirror\u2014you see yourself\u2014you don\u2019t just see a mom of four children you\u2019re helping grow up to maturity\u2014you see a woman, who has also been given a mission of giving spiritual life to other women \/ speaking into the life of your husband, encouraging him\u2014you\u2019re a life-giver beyond just your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; right. I could look at my list of things to do that day\u2014like: \u201cI have laundry; I have meetings; I need to look at the budget; I have to pay bills; I have to get kids to and from school,\u201d\u2014and all of that is\u2014it may be true, but I have a <em>permanent<\/em> role\u2014I\u2019ve been given a ministry of reconciliation. So I make my appeal as an ambassador of Christ\u2014I implore people, \u201cBe reconciled to God through Jesus.\u201d That is the undertone \/ the motive\u2014all of the goal of my work, as a mom. All of that comes about, because God\u2019s given me a ministry of reconciliation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, I\u2019m trying to sit here and think of like the woman, who is listening, whose blood pressure may be going up as she hears you talk about this. You know, there are some, who their blood pressure does go up, and they go: \u201cWhy are you gender stereotyping nurturing?\u00a0 I mean, isn\u2019t your husband Dave a nurturer? Doesn\u2019t he nurture your kids? Why are you throwing this all on women and saying, \u2018This is for women\u2019? This is just binary gender stereotyping? Why are you doing that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Well, I wouldn\u2019t use the word, \u201cstereotype.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just kind of go back into Genesis 1, where God created them male and female. Another great place to start, if you want to talk about your blood pressure, is after the fall\u2014God is proclaiming the curses. He curses the serpent; He curses Adam\u2019s work; and then Eve\u2019s procreation pain. In the midst of all of that, He gives a promise\u2014He says He\u2019s going to send a serpent-crusher, the seed of the woman, to deliver. Adam then turns to his wife and names her <em>Eve<\/em>, the mother of all living. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod\u2019s just painted this very bleak picture of, \u201cNow you\u2019re going to live as dead; because I said you would surely die, and you surely will die.\u201d In the middle of all of that, and looking at all of those obstacles \/ those surmounting obstacles\u2014they\u2019re about to get kicked out\u2014he looks at her and he says, \u201cGod promises,\u201d and he calls her Eve, which I think is\u2014I mean, we have so many more places we could look; but one of the first and best places, I think, to look is right <em>there<\/em> after the promise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re tying together that declaration with this responsibility of mothering and saying: \u201cThere\u2019s something about the fact that God made you a woman and not a man. Intrinsic with that womanhood is this call to do something that you can do probably better than any of us men could do\u2014not just give biological life\u2014but minister life in a way that most men can\u2019t do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; and why didn\u2019t you call it \u201cMissional Life-giving\u201d? [Laughter] There are probably some women, who are out there, who\u2014their blood pressure\u2019s high and they\u2019re going, \u201cWhy should you use the word, \u2018motherhood\u2019?\u2014because I don\u2019t see myself that way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Oh. I used to not see myself that way either, really. In the book, I share a funny story about when I was a kid. I got fired from my first job. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0My teacher wanted me to tutor other kids in reading because she saw that I was excelling; but then I got fired pretty quickly, because I didn\u2019t have the patience to persevere with anyone. She said that was the main reason that I was being fired: \u201cLittle Gloria does not have the patience to bring anyone along with her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How old was little Gloria?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>About eight. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember being sad about being fired from my first job. I remember thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t have time for this.\u201d As a young woman, I pretty much had that little story going through my head: \u201cI just don\u2019t have time for this. I\u2019m going places. I have an agenda. I have to do what I have to do. I don\u2019t have time for this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThankfully, the Lord opened my eyes to the bigger story that He made me a part of. He made me a part of the story\u2014where <em>He<\/em> is on a mission; <em>He<\/em> is going places; <em>He<\/em> is filling the earth with image-bearers, re-created in the image of His Son; and He will <em>fill<\/em> this earth with His glory. I <em>get<\/em> to be a part of that. I <em>get<\/em> to nurture life in the face of death. That is something I do not deserve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, to those who want to embrace feminism\u2014and as they do that, they\u2019re really in the process of rejecting God and how He made them\u2014what would you say to them? I mean, they don\u2019t even know what\u2019s going on. They just listen to the culture\u2014I get it\u2014I understand that the noise out there \/ the brainwash that\u2019s occurring. What would you say to a young lady <em>or<\/em> to the parents, who are raising a daughter, who\u2019s in college today?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because this is the default-thinking of Christian women today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; I would speak to the noise and the brainwashing directly\u2014and share God\u2019s words of life as loud and clear as I possibly can, and as winsomely as I possibly could \/ as joyfully as I possibly could\u2014<em>live<\/em> that out\u2014my joy and contentment in the way God designed me, the way He gave me strengths and weaknesses, the way He gave me opportunities and missed opportunities\u2014the way He\u2019s designed all of those things to work together for His glory\u2014and just revel in those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe noise\u2014you need to train your children up to discern it\u2014so help them with discernment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalking with my nine-year-old about marketing these days\u2014it\u2019s really funny. We read ads everywhere. I\u2019ll ask her\u2014I\u2019ll stop and say, \u201cCan you read that?\u201d and she can read it. I\u2019ll say, \u201cWhat are they promising you?\u201d \u201cUm\u2014a shirt for that much money.\u201d \u201cYes; but why?\u2014how much?\u2014what are they going to give you at the end of it?\u201d Always, at the end of this little exercise: \u201cThey\u2019re promising you happiness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re just talking about consumerism and marketing; but I\u2019m trying to teach her how to discern these things, because she\u2019s young and naive and: \u201cOh, I need that! They told me I need it!\u201d \u201cWho told you that you need that?\u201d\u2014kind of how the serpent told Eve\u2014\u201cWho told you that you were naked? Who told you that you didn\u2019t have something?\u201d At the end, we talk about happiness and that lollipop on the commercial\u2014or whatever it is\u2014will give you \u201cx<em>\u201d<\/em> minutes of happiness. \u201cLet\u2019s talk about eternal joy \/ let\u2019s talk about the fullness of joy. Where do we get that?\u201d\u2014so kind of circling it all back around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m hoping it leaves her just a taste of [being] skeptical about advertisements; but hopefully, I\u2019m helping teach her how to ask questions and discern.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What you\u2019re doing is one of Barbara\u2019s soapboxes. When we were raising our kids, she wanted to teach our kids how to think critically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, all these messages are coming through. If you just believe it because you hear it there, as a young person, you\u2019re going to end up being deceived.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; yes. Yes; I talk about this in the book quite a bit\u2014that the architect of the course of this world is <em>Satan<\/em>. He has designed the course of this world to only ever validate and motivate you in your flesh and in your sinful desires. All the course of this world does is affirm our sinful flesh and our pride, and we need to be delivered out of those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can help my daughter learn discernment <em>all<\/em> I want. I could help her be the most thoughtful, thinking person; but unless God makes her alive together with Christ, all of that is just really head knowledge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Ephesians, Chapter 2, Paul is waxing eloquent about the course of this world and how that is designed against us to only dull our spiritual senses. In verse 4, he breaks out and he says: \u201cBut God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf this message isn\u2019t the one <em>big<\/em> message that I share with my kids, all of that other training and discernment is going to be butted up against those YouTube videos, and the commercials, and the movies, and the songs, and their friends. I want the gospel to be my one big soapbox to stand on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your husband shared a story with me that gave me a little insight into you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Uh-oh. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He was telling me about when the two of you first started thinking about Dubai as the place that you belonged. He was saying he was on the phone\u2014you were both on the phone with somebody who was talking to you about going to Dubai.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He said you got off the phone while he was still talking. [Laughter] And what did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I brought a chair from the dining room into our bedroom. I stood on it, and I got a suitcase out of the closet, and I put my clothes in it, and then I just did a big sweep on my favorite shelf of books and put my favorite books in the suitcase, zipped it up, and stood by the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He\u2019s still on the phone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; he\u2019s still on the phone. I interrupted by shouting down the hallway, \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got the suitcase packed and you\u2019re at the door, ready to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; I was ready! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So here\u2019s what that told me about you\u2014that said: \u201cGloria is a \u2018Let\u2019s take the hill!\u2019-Type A-\u2018Let\u2019s charge!\u2019-\u2018Let\u2019s get going with what matters!\u2019 kind of a person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGloria\u2019s not the person who\u2019s going to write a book about doing laundry and finding glimpses of grace in the mundane things of life. She\u2019s not about the mundane! She\u2019s an adventurer! She\u2019s somebody, who in college, would get excited about the ceiling she\u2019s going to break through in life to find significance.\u201d Is that who you are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Maybe. [Laughter] I remember going to college with that big goal in mind, \u201cI\u2019m going to climb the highest ladder I can find.\u201d Somewhere, in that first freshman year, I became a Christian and, at the same time, had that big identity crisis: \u201cWhat am I doing?!\u201d I ended up dropping my major, because my motives were sheerly in making money: \u201cI\u2019m just going to have to cut this off, because all I can think about in class is how I\u2019m going to make loads of money and climb the tallest ladder I can see.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe the new hill to climb is that Great Commission\u2014I pray it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Where, in your thinking, did the idea that raising the four kids God\u2019s given you become a big part of that hill that God\u2019s put in front of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>When we were in seminary, the Lord began working on my heart in terms of raising children. I think the pat answer we\u2019d given everyone when we got married was, \u201cOh, we\u2019ll\u2014five years.\u201d Five years was\u2014I don\u2019t know why we said five\u2014it was just a magical number, because that was far enough that people wouldn\u2019t keep asking me every month if I was going to be pregnant soon and small enough that the grandparents wouldn\u2019t be worried. [Laughter] I just said, \u201cFive years\u2014five years.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And how long was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I think it was about five or six years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And all that time, was there something going off inside of you, going, \u201cI\u2019m ready to be a mom,\u201d or was it like, \u201cUhh\u2026\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think I ever felt ready. I still don\u2019t feel ready [Laughter] for the new challenges ahead as they grow and change. The dynamic of the family changes every time we add one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>How about that?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; no kidding. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, what I hear you saying here is that a mom is a life-giver in training her child\u2014her sons and daughters\u2014how to think, how to be spiritually minded, how to walk with God, how to find a mission that God designed for them and uniquely them\u2014not just how to do a back handspring on a gymnastics floor, or a routine in gymnastics, or soccer, or in a play, or in music, or in making great grades, or in training for a career\u2014but you\u2019re training your kids to be ambassadors, disciples, followers of Christ \/ to know how to do life in the midst of a lot of confusing messages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think if moms could hear that message today\u2014if they could get that one thought from this broadcast\u2014it would lift them away from \u201cjust being a mom.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is great significance in what Dennis has just described; isn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is significance that the culture says has lost its luster: \u201cThe daycare center can take care of that,\u201d or \u201cSomebody else can take care of that,\u201d or \u201cYou have bigger things to do than to raise the next generation.\u201d You\u2019re looking and going, \u201cNo; I can do the bigger things and raise the next generation, because the bigger things involve the next generation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what you\u2019ve written about in the book, <em>Missional Motherhood<\/em>, which is a book that we have copies of in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center. I loaded two really big cannons and fired everything I can think of out of those cannons toward that\u2014the one cannon being a biblical theology of motherhood in the first half of that book, and in the second half of the book a systematic look at the person and work of Jesus Christ. My big premise is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wait\u2014wait, wait, wait. You just blew people\u2019s minds: \u201cI\u2019m talking about motherhood; so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, she said cannons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>And I\u2019m firing cannons! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201c\u2014and I fired cannons with an Old Testament survey and the systematic theology of Jesus to get to motherhood\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019m getting there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake me there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give her a chance, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>If God has created all things for Him, by Him, through Him\u2014all of this unto Jesus\u2014and motherhood is part of His mission, then <em>nothing<\/em> that God does could be a trifling \u201cjust\u201d or a demeaning \u201cjust.\u201d God is the Architect of our motherhood, and all of this is for His glory. There\u2019s <em>nothing<\/em> demeaning about it whatsoever. It has eternal purposes in mind and God\u2019s <em>glory<\/em> at the end of it, and all throughout it is the Spirit at work in and among us. So I loaded those two cannons and pointed them directly at that phrase, \u201cI\u2019m just a mom\u201d; and I just fired them. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I love it! When I read it, I literally just kind of cheered\u2014I said: \u201cYes! I really like that!\u201d because we\u2019ve done a lot of broadcasts over the past 24 years, trying to lift moms out of the mundane and give them a biblical view of who they are and why God made them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The exalted role\u2014because it really is true that, when God calls you to be a mom, we\u2019re talking about something that is <em>foundational<\/em> to who we are, as human beings, and giving life to and nurturing the next generation. I mean, really?\u2014is there much more significance than that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; right\u2014nurturing life in the face of death. Just in general, people think there\u2019s something else out there that we ought to be grasping for other than whatever God\u2019s design for our lives might be. That plays itself out in different ways. I could name different examples of different kinds of conversations I\u2019ve had with women about this; but I\u2019m talking to women, <em>in general<\/em>, and not just to people who\u2019ve had biological children. So when I say that women nurture the life that God creates, I also mean to include spiritual life as the Lord Jesus has given us His directive and marching orders for us: \u201cGo therefore and make disciples of all the nations, teaching them to obey everything I\u2019ve commanded, baptizing them\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re making motherhood bigger than just giving biological life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019m reminding us that it\u2019s a verb. We mother and use the synonym, nurture\u2014so nurturing the life that God creates. I came into contact with this pretty early on in my Christian walk, because I was saved in college. The leaders of that little Bible study were two young single women. They <em>mothered<\/em> me, spiritually, and they shared the gospel with me. They shared with me their very lives. As Paul says to the Corinthians, their hearts were wide open to me; and they taught me from the Scriptures who God is, who I am, and how to live rightly in light of the fact that Easter really did happen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy own mother mothered me <em>so well<\/em>; and then, when God opened my eyes in college, there were single ladies mothering me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t know this\u2014more than likely, because your kids are younger \/ you\u2019re not ready for a new resource FamilyLife has just created in the past year\u2014but it\u2019s called <em>Passport2Identity<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>, There is one for boys to go through with their father and one for girls to go through with their mother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA part of what we were doing when we put that together was\u2014we talked about, \u201cWhat is the essence of femininity\/masculinity from the Bible?\u201d One of the themes of <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> for girls is that women are nurturers\u2014they do bring forth life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They\u2019re life-givers; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s interesting\u2014the very core message you have in your book, <em>Missional Motherhood<\/em>, is calling women outside of defining their lives\u2014you with me?\u2014according to what the world says and according to what the Bible says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cLet\u2019s be a part of joining God and bringing spiritual life to people, not just physical life as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; right. We so often look at what we can see as the limits, and boundaries, and resources for our mothering. We look at our biology, our fertility, our access to fertility treatments, our marriage status even. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when we are new creations in Christ, we have the Spirit of God at our disposal. He is our indwelling Spirit. Through us, Jesus is making disciples of the nations\u2014we are no longer limited: \u201cMy marriage status\u2014I\u2019m single. I can\u2019t make disciples,\u201d\u2014no! You can make disciples. \u201cPhysically, I\u2019m not fit enough,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not healthy enough to have children,\u201d\u2014but you are spiritually fit, through Christ, to make disciples. Spiritual mothering is the groundwork\/the calling for our mothering work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So as you look in the mirror\u2014you see yourself\u2014you don\u2019t just see a mom of four children you\u2019re helping grow up to maturity\u2014you see a woman, who has also been given a mission of giving spiritual life to other women \/ speaking into the life of your husband, encouraging him\u2014you\u2019re a life-giver beyond just your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; right. I could look at my list of things to do that day\u2014like: \u201cI have laundry; I have meetings; I need to look at the budget; I have to pay bills; I have to get kids to and from school,\u201d\u2014and all of that is\u2014it may be true, but I have a <em>permanent<\/em> role\u2014I\u2019ve been given a ministry of reconciliation. So I make my appeal as an ambassador of Christ\u2014I implore people, \u201cBe reconciled to God through Jesus.\u201d That is the undertone \/ the motive\u2014all of the goal of my work, as a mom. All of that comes about, because God\u2019s given me a ministry of reconciliation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, I\u2019m trying to sit here and think of like the woman, who is listening, whose blood pressure may be going up as she hears you talk about this. You know, there are some, who their blood pressure does go up, and they go: \u201cWhy are you gender stereotyping nurturing?\u00a0 I mean, isn\u2019t your husband Dave a nurturer? Doesn\u2019t he nurture your kids? Why are you throwing this all on women and saying, \u2018This is for women\u2019? This is just binary gender stereotyping? Why are you doing that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Well, I wouldn\u2019t use the word, \u201cstereotype.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just kind of go back into Genesis 1, where God created them male and female. Another great place to start, if you want to talk about your blood pressure, is after the fall\u2014God is proclaiming the curses. He curses the serpent; He curses Adam\u2019s work; and then Eve\u2019s procreation pain. In the midst of all of that, He gives a promise\u2014He says He\u2019s going to send a serpent-crusher, the seed of the woman, to deliver. Adam then turns to his wife and names her <em>Eve<\/em>, the mother of all living. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod\u2019s just painted this very bleak picture of, \u201cNow you\u2019re going to live as dead; because I said you would surely die, and you surely will die.\u201d In the middle of all of that, and looking at all of those obstacles \/ those surmounting obstacles\u2014they\u2019re about to get kicked out\u2014he looks at her and he says, \u201cGod promises,\u201d and he calls her Eve, which I think is\u2014I mean, we have so many more places we could look; but one of the first and best places, I think, to look is right <em>there<\/em> after the promise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re tying together that declaration with this responsibility of mothering and saying: \u201cThere\u2019s something about the fact that God made you a woman and not a man. Intrinsic with that womanhood is this call to do something that you can do probably better than any of us men could do\u2014not just give biological life\u2014but minister life in a way that most men can\u2019t do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; and why didn\u2019t you call it \u201cMissional Life-giving\u201d? [Laughter] There are probably some women, who are out there, who\u2014their blood pressure\u2019s high and they\u2019re going, \u201cWhy should you use the word, \u2018motherhood\u2019?\u2014because I don\u2019t see myself that way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Oh. I used to not see myself that way either, really. In the book, I share a funny story about when I was a kid. I got fired from my first job. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0My teacher wanted me to tutor other kids in reading because she saw that I was excelling; but then I got fired pretty quickly, because I didn\u2019t have the patience to persevere with anyone. She said that was the main reason that I was being fired: \u201cLittle Gloria does not have the patience to bring anyone along with her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How old was little Gloria?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>About eight. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember being sad about being fired from my first job. I remember thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t have time for this.\u201d As a young woman, I pretty much had that little story going through my head: \u201cI just don\u2019t have time for this. I\u2019m going places. I have an agenda. I have to do what I have to do. I don\u2019t have time for this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThankfully, the Lord opened my eyes to the bigger story that He made me a part of. He made me a part of the story\u2014where <em>He<\/em> is on a mission; <em>He<\/em> is going places; <em>He<\/em> is filling the earth with image-bearers, re-created in the image of His Son; and He will <em>fill<\/em> this earth with His glory. I <em>get<\/em> to be a part of that. I <em>get<\/em> to nurture life in the face of death. That is something I do not deserve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, to those who want to embrace feminism\u2014and as they do that, they\u2019re really in the process of rejecting God and how He made them\u2014what would you say to them? I mean, they don\u2019t even know what\u2019s going on. They just listen to the culture\u2014I get it\u2014I understand that the noise out there \/ the brainwash that\u2019s occurring. What would you say to a young lady <em>or<\/em> to the parents, who are raising a daughter, who\u2019s in college today?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because this is the default-thinking of Christian women today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; I would speak to the noise and the brainwashing directly\u2014and share God\u2019s words of life as loud and clear as I possibly can, and as winsomely as I possibly could \/ as joyfully as I possibly could\u2014<em>live<\/em> that out\u2014my joy and contentment in the way God designed me, the way He gave me strengths and weaknesses, the way He gave me opportunities and missed opportunities\u2014the way He\u2019s designed all of those things to work together for His glory\u2014and just revel in those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe noise\u2014you need to train your children up to discern it\u2014so help them with discernment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalking with my nine-year-old about marketing these days\u2014it\u2019s really funny. We read ads everywhere. I\u2019ll ask her\u2014I\u2019ll stop and say, \u201cCan you read that?\u201d and she can read it. I\u2019ll say, \u201cWhat are they promising you?\u201d \u201cUm\u2014a shirt for that much money.\u201d \u201cYes; but why?\u2014how much?\u2014what are they going to give you at the end of it?\u201d Always, at the end of this little exercise: \u201cThey\u2019re promising you happiness.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re just talking about consumerism and marketing; but I\u2019m trying to teach her how to discern these things, because she\u2019s young and naive and: \u201cOh, I need that! They told me I need it!\u201d \u201cWho told you that you need that?\u201d\u2014kind of how the serpent told Eve\u2014\u201cWho told you that you were naked? Who told you that you didn\u2019t have something?\u201d At the end, we talk about happiness and that lollipop on the commercial\u2014or whatever it is\u2014will give you \u201cx<em>\u201d<\/em> minutes of happiness. \u201cLet\u2019s talk about eternal joy \/ let\u2019s talk about the fullness of joy. Where do we get that?\u201d\u2014so kind of circling it all back around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m hoping it leaves her just a taste of [being] skeptical about advertisements; but hopefully, I\u2019m helping teach her how to ask questions and discern.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What you\u2019re doing is one of Barbara\u2019s soapboxes. When we were raising our kids, she wanted to teach our kids how to think critically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, all these messages are coming through. If you just believe it because you hear it there, as a young person, you\u2019re going to end up being deceived.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; yes. Yes; I talk about this in the book quite a bit\u2014that the architect of the course of this world is <em>Satan<\/em>. He has designed the course of this world to only ever validate and motivate you in your flesh and in your sinful desires. All the course of this world does is affirm our sinful flesh and our pride, and we need to be delivered out of those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can help my daughter learn discernment <em>all<\/em> I want. I could help her be the most thoughtful, thinking person; but unless God makes her alive together with Christ, all of that is just really head knowledge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Ephesians, Chapter 2, Paul is waxing eloquent about the course of this world and how that is designed against us to only dull our spiritual senses. In verse 4, he breaks out and he says: \u201cBut God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf this message isn\u2019t the one <em>big<\/em> message that I share with my kids, all of that other training and discernment is going to be butted up against those YouTube videos, and the commercials, and the movies, and the songs, and their friends. I want the gospel to be my one big soapbox to stand on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your husband shared a story with me that gave me a little insight into you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Uh-oh. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He was telling me about when the two of you first started thinking about Dubai as the place that you belonged. He was saying he was on the phone\u2014you were both on the phone with somebody who was talking to you about going to Dubai.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He said you got off the phone while he was still talking. [Laughter] And what did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>I brought a chair from the dining room into our bedroom. I stood on it, and I got a suitcase out of the closet, and I put my clothes in it, and then I just did a big sweep on my favorite shelf of books and put my favorite books in the suitcase, zipped it up, and stood by the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He\u2019s still on the phone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Yes; he\u2019s still on the phone. I interrupted by shouting down the hallway, \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You got the suitcase packed and you\u2019re at the door, ready to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Right; I was ready! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So here\u2019s what that told me about you\u2014that said: \u201cGloria is a \u2018Let\u2019s take the hill!\u2019-Type A-\u2018Let\u2019s charge!\u2019-\u2018Let\u2019s get going with what matters!\u2019 kind of a person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGloria\u2019s not the person who\u2019s going to write a book about doing laundry and finding glimpses of grace in the mundane things of life. She\u2019s not about the mundane! She\u2019s an adventurer! She\u2019s somebody, who in college, would get excited about the ceiling she\u2019s going to break through in life to find significance.\u201d Is that who you are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>Maybe. [Laughter] I remember going to college with that big goal in mind, \u201cI\u2019m going to climb the highest ladder I can find.\u201d Somewhere, in that first freshman year, I became a Christian and, at the same time, had that big identity crisis: \u201cWhat am I doing?!\u201d I ended up dropping my major, because my motives were sheerly in making money: \u201cI\u2019m just going to have to cut this off, because all I can think about in class is how I\u2019m going to make loads of money and climb the tallest ladder I can see.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe the new hill to climb is that Great Commission\u2014I pray it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Where, in your thinking, did the idea that raising the four kids God\u2019s given you become a big part of that hill that God\u2019s put in front of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>When we were in seminary, the Lord began working on my heart in terms of raising children. I think the pat answer we\u2019d given everyone when we got married was, \u201cOh, we\u2019ll\u2014five years.\u201d Five years was\u2014I don\u2019t know why we said five\u2014it was just a magical number, because that was far enough that people wouldn\u2019t keep asking me every month if I was going to be pregnant soon and small enough that the grandparents wouldn\u2019t be worried. I still don\u2019t feel ready [Laughter] for the new challenges ahead as they grow and change. The dynamic of the family changes every time we add one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gloria: <\/strong>How about that?!
