The Book of John tells us He was sent by God\u2014He left heaven, and He came to earth. He became a baby, as we all know in the story, and was born and lived and gave His life for us. But the time\u2014those weeks leading up to Christmas\u2014years ago, in the Middle Ages or somewhere in there, the church fathers met and decided that this would be a good time to help people prepare their hearts to celebrate and to worship when Christmas Day actually came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a great concept because, in our culture today, we don\u2019t wait very well, we do not celebrate very well, and we don\u2019t mark the days very well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there is some benefit\u2014especially for families\u2014to mark those Sundays of Advent with, even, a ten-minute gathering. Get together before bed time, if you have to\u2014or after breakfast or whenever it works\u2014and just think together about what this season is all about. The whole idea of Advent is preparing your heart to worship and to appropriately celebrate the gift of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 28<sup>th<\/sup>. I just\u2014I\u2019m wondering: \u201cDo you guys have, at your house, somebody who comes through\u2014like at the end of the weekend after Thanksgiving\u2014and says: \u2018Okay; we\u2019ve got to do a major shift here!\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to take all the Thanksgiving stuff down\u2019?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re looking at him. [Laughter] My martyr meter is going off right now. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>There\u2019s not that much Thanksgiving stuff to take down; mind you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There really isn\u2019t; but I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014the Christmas\u2014we have it out in a little storage shed. I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s a lot, but we hire an 18-wheeler to move the 200 feet from our storage shed up to our back door. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had to put an addition on the storage shed\u2014didn\u2019t you?\u2014just to handle more Christmas stuff over the years?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You guys are terrible!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are terrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You are, because it\u2019s so <em>not<\/em> true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>But the truth is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Barbara\u2014you know, here is the thing, Bob\u2014this is a paradox of life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong><br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Barbara says her favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And by the way, Barbara is joining us again today. Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome back, Sweetheart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, Thanksgiving, which we\u2019ve just completed\u2014your favorite holiday; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; and the rest of the sentence is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why are there <em>boxes<\/em> of Christmas gear that we bring in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Because there is so <em>much<\/em> more available to purchase, and to display, and to decorate with for Christmas than there is for Thanksgiving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Especially since you created Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s part of it too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have declared the reason for the season, both at Thanksgiving and at Christmas\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So, part of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and at Valentine\u2019s, and at Easter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014and Easter. Part of the reason\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and the Fourth of July!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Part of the reason we have more at Christmas now is because we have all the old stuff\u2014all the old Santa, snowmen \/ things have nothing to do with Jesus\u2014stuff that I haven\u2019t gotten rid of yet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what I think?\u2014[whispering]\u2014they could disappear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They could. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>[Whispering] They might\u2014they might vanish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But we\u2019ve replaced them with all the new things about Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you see an extra trash can out at the curb tonight when you go home\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I\u2019ll know what it is; yes! [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you will know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It may be my body!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you will know that your husband has decided to edit some of your Christmas decorations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This could be the end of me! [Laughter]\u00a0 No; we have a good time with it\u2014I really enjoy the season. We do pull it out, and there is a transition. There\u2019s not that much gear that comes down from Thanksgiving \/ there is a good amount that comes <em>up<\/em> to celebrate Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ve been to your home at Christmastime. I just love\u2014there is a red vinyl record that you\u2019ve had up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You like my old records?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I <em>love<\/em> the old records. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I do too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You knew that would be something that I would gravitate toward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But what is it? I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s <em>Joy to the World<\/em>. What is it?\u00a0 Do you remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it may be <em>Hark!<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>The Herald Angels Sing<\/em>; but I have three of these <em>old<\/em> records left from my childhood. We had stacks of them that my brother and I used to play on our little record player. For some reason, I ended up with these three\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014two are red and one is a 78 [RPM]\u2014which nobody knows what that is anymore except you [Bob]. One is a 78, and it\u2019s yellow. I put those up on little plate stands every year at Christmas. They are just some of my favorite things that I put out every year at Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; well, I have to be honest with you\u2014since we have become empty-nesters at our house, we\u2019ve had the conversation of \u201cCan we just kind of scale back the home decorating?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was one thing when the kids were home\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and you really wanted to create an atmosphere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have your kids let you have it for doing that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I mean, they only show up for a few days; and you can endure that. [Laughter] I\u2019m just curious: \u201cHave you thought about scaling back since it\u2019s just the two of you now?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; we have scaled back. In fact, when we did some remodeling on our house a few years ago, I didn\u2019t even put up a full-sized tree \/ it wasn\u2019t even a fresh tree\u2014I had a smaller tree that was a table-top tree. When I got that and I set it up, I heard in my head the words that I said to myself when I was a young wife: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI will <em>never<\/em> do a table-top tree like all these <em>old<\/em> people that I know.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 All of a sudden, I thought: \u201cOh my gosh!\u00a0 I\u2019m one of <em>those<\/em>. [Laughter] What has happened to me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re not an old person; trust me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you have scaled back?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>We have scaled back; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because Dennis makes it sound like it\u2019s just getting bigger and bigger every year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It is not getting bigger and bigger every year. So, sorry, dear; I disagree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you have it\u2014another great illustration ruined by an eye-witness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what has happened at your home\u2014and we talked about this earlier. Some the old decorations that were festive have been replaced by decorations that are more purposeful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And this is something that I know\u2014over the last five years \/ maybe longer than that\u2014has become a real burden for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ve wanted to find Christmas decorations\u2014whether it was ornaments or other kinds of things that I could put out at Christmas\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014for 20 years, I\u2019ve been looking for things that were about Christ, other than a Nativity set, which we had a couple of, and we put those up every year. Other than a Nativity set of some kind, it was very hard to find anything to hang on a Christmas tree that was about Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that I\u2019ve started creating these Christmas ornaments that are about Jesus, called Adorenaments<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, that\u2019s what my tree is covered with now. I don\u2019t put up all the other ones that we used to put up when the kids were at home. We don\u2019t have Santas, and reindeer, and snowmen, and footballs, and all of that stuff on our tree anymore\u2014partly because the kids are gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf the kids were still home and little, and they wanted to hang those ornaments, we would hang them; but I would also put up ornaments about Christ, because Christmas is about Jesus. I want anyone who comes in our home\u2014<em>and<\/em> those of us who live in our home\u2014to be reminded every day, during the month of December, that what we are celebrating is about Jesus Christ\u2014it\u2019s about His birth \/ it\u2019s about His incarnation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not about all this extra stuff, and I want that to be preeminent in our home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Some of our listeners will know that we are in a season\u2014that, on the church calendar, is an official season. In fact, some listeners, this week at church, will have lit a candle as part of the worship service around an Advent wreath. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They are marking out Advent as a season. I know other listeners are going, \u201cI thought Advent was something that the church down the street did, and we don\u2019t do it,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s a foreign term for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is something that you\u2019ve kind of dug into and said: \u201cWhat\u2019s the history of Advent?\u201d and \u201cWhy has the church marked out this season in advance of Christmas?\u201d\u00a0 What have you found?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the term, \u201cadvent,\u201d just means Jesus\u2019 coming\u2014it means the time when He came to earth \/ He left heaven. The Book of John tells us He was sent by God\u2014He left heaven, and He came to earth. He became a baby, as we all know in the story, and was born and, then, lived and gave His life for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the time\u2014those weeks leading up to Christmas\u2014years ago, in the Middle Ages or somewhere in there, the church fathers met and decided that this would be a good time to help people prepare their hearts to celebrate and to worship when Christmas Day actually came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a great concept because, in our culture today, we don\u2019t wait very well, we do not celebrate very well, and we don\u2019t mark the days very well. I think there is some benefit\u2014especially for families\u2014to mark those Sundays of Advent with, even, a ten- minute gathering. Get together before bed time, if you have to\u2014or after breakfast or whenever it works\u2014and just think together about what this season is all about. We\u2019ve got some ways that we want to tell you about that we think that you could do that, but the whole idea of Advent is preparing your heart to worship and to appropriately celebrate the gift of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Advent can be celebrated on each Sunday, leading up to Christmas, as it is this year. It\u2019s already started\u2014people begin to celebrate Advent, thinking about the coming of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s also celebrated on a daily basis, leading up to Christmas Eve\u2014and, then, Christmas morning\u2014where the arrival of the Christ-child and the celebration of Him coming and physically visiting the planet can be talked about, as a family, and what that meant for us, as individuals; us, as a family; and also our world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re encouraging listeners to be intentional and purposeful during the Christmas season this year. We\u2019ve got some suggestions we\u2019ve been sending out to folks and will be sending out during the Advent season. You can go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com, to find out how you can get these emails or these text messages sent to you during the season so that your family can be more purposeful, more focused, more intentional during this season of the year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014when I was growing up, we had an Advent calendar\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014different one every year\u2014that we would get out. Each day on the calendar was covered up with something. As a child, I either got to tear off the piece of cardboard to show what was behind the date or I got to flip something over and see what was revealed\u2014always something hidden that is revealed each day. That\u2019s part of what we are remembering during the Advent season\u2014is that there is expectation\u2014there is something hidden that is about to be revealed. Each day of Advent, we\u2019re expectant \/ we\u2019re anticipating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was one calendar that we got one year, where there was a piece of chocolate behind every day. That got attention paid to it. Trust me!\u00a0 Every day at breakfast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve never forgotten it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was your favorite; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; of course!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we had one, when we were raising little children, that was kind of a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was felt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014it was felt. You pulled out an ornament\u2014a candy cane \/ a Santa Claus\u2014again, it was not centered on Christ as you would think it would be as an Advent calendar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just listening to Barbara talk about this, Bob\u2014over 25 years ago, she began to look around and to search for ways that were about Christ in helping us celebrate His advent\/His coming to the plant\u2014but also, things that were beautiful, that were elegant, that weren\u2019t just plastic but were heirlooms that could be passed on to future generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You started with the Christmas tree, and this is your fifth year to make ornaments for trees?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Back, five years ago, you came up with a set of seven ornaments that were all around the Christmas names of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>The next year, you did His royal names\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014in the shape of crowns. The year after that, you did His Savior names that were all in crosses\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014different crosses from different eras in church history. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Last year, you took the name of Jesus and you had it in different languages with the different alphabets from those languages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This year, you\u2019ve got a new set of ornaments?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>We do. We have a new set. We\u2019ve titled these \u201cHis Advent Names,\u201d appropriately, because these ornaments\u2014there are four of them this year\u2014they are all round, and they\u2019re all globes. You see the continents of the world on these globes; and then, each one has a name of Christ. Then, on the other side of the globe, it has the verse where that name is found in the Bible. The focus of this set of ornaments is that He came to earth. We visually created globes to remind us that Jesus came to earth for us; and then, these are some names that are associated with His advent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what are the four names you used this year?\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>The four names are \u201cJesus is the Light\u201d \/ He came to be the light of the world\u2014\u201cJesus is the Son\u201d \/ \u201cFor God so loved the world that He gave His Son\u2026\u201d\u2014\u201cJesus is the Word\u201d \/ \u201cFor the word became flesh and dwelt among us,\u201d \/ that\u2019s all about His birth in the manger. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, the last one is \u201cThe Messenger\u201d; and it\u2019s about Jesus coming to bring good news and to tell us who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Everybody who has seen these\u2014and seen the others that Barbara created\u2014say these are their favorites \/ that the globes that feature the names of Christ really are spectacular and also, again, call attention to the reason why He came to the planet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think it\u2019s important, Bob, as we hang these ornaments on our trees, to bring our children \/ our grandchildren into the experience and talk about\u2014not just hang the globe or hang the name on the tree, but to talk about: \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d\u00a0 You could literally take all 25 of these ornaments that Barbara has created over all\u2014His Christmas names, His Royal names, His Savior names, and now, His Advent names\u2014you could turn your Christmas tree\u2014over the next, well, almost 24\/25 days\u2014into an Advent Christmas tree. One day after another, hang one of these on your tree and talk about the name of Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and introduce your children or, as a couple, talk about, \u201cHow is Jesus the Light of the World?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And radio really doesn\u2019t do justice to these. Again, I\u2019ll encourage listeners to go to FamliyLifeToday.com, where they can see what you\u2019ve created. In fact, Advent\u2014you kind of didn\u2019t pay attention to Advent until your kids were grown; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I paid attention to it when we were raising our kids, but I didn\u2019t know what to do with it; because I was too busy\u2014and school parties\u2014you know, there were just too many things going on during the month of December. I think every mom, listening, would say the same thing. It\u2019s a very, very busy season\u2014we <em>want<\/em> to do all those things with our kids, and we want to do gifts for all these people, and we wear ourselves out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, even though I wanted to do Advent, I didn\u2019t know of an easy way to do it. The times that I tried it, we only did one Sunday; and then, we never finished. I felt like a failure, and I didn\u2019t like feeling like a failure. I just thought: \u201cWell, forget that. We won\u2019t do Advent in our house, because it\u2019s just too hard to pull it off.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I do think that Advent is worth practicing, even if you only do it once. That\u2019s what I didn\u2019t understand when I was a mom\u2014that doing something\u2014even just doing one time\u2014is better than nothing. I think that\u2019s my encouragement to moms and to women is: \u201cEven if you just do one Sunday \/ even if you do one something, it\u2019s better than nothing.\u201d I think that makes it valuable, because you\u2019re being intentional. You\u2019re creating some moments of meaning with your family if you try to make a pause in your life\u2014take a timeout from your busyness\u2014to reflect on who Christ is and what He came to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the significance of this is way underestimated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, over in Philippians 2, it talks about\u2014someday, at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Lord, to the glory of God the Father. I think we underestimate that these names\u2014and interestingly, how many names in your study did you find in the Scriptures were the names of Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Some scholars say over 300. I don\u2019t know\u2014I\u2019ve not counted them\u2014but there are a lot more names than any of us have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, these 25 names that she\u2019s illustrating with these Adorenaments\u2014these are <em>powerful<\/em> names that give parents practical ways to teach your children about who God is\u2014talking about how Jesus is the Light of the World \/ how He is the Word\u2014and how they need the Word today; how they need to have a guide \/ how they need to have a direction for their lives. If they don\u2019t, they\u2019re going to be obedient to the world and going to conform to the world. So, because Christ came, He showed us what a straight line really is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And some listeners, I know, are thinking, \u201cI\u2019ve heard about Advent, but our church doesn\u2019t do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey feel like, maybe, there is something just strange about it; because it\u2019s unfamiliar. What would you say to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I would say familiarity doesn\u2019t always mean that is right. I think that just because it\u2019s different doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s something that you shouldn\u2019t do. There is value in taking some time, as a family\u2014or even just as a husband and wife if you don\u2019t have kids yet\u2014to talk about the names of Christ, and to talk about who He is, and why He came. That\u2019s what Advent is all about\u2014it\u2019s preparing your heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I think anytime we can pause and prepare our heart to welcome Him \/ to give Him worship, we\u2019re going to be better for it. It may be a little different than something you\u2019ve heard of, but just think of what the word [Advent] means\u2014it just means preparing for His coming. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain for listeners what the benefits are of taking time out to focus on Jesus during the Advent season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>The whole purpose for Advent\u2014the reason that the church fathers came up with this idea, back in the Middle Ages, was to encourage people, who were believers in Christ, to prepare their hearts for Christmas Day. It\u2019s a way to anticipate His coming \/ it\u2019s a way to look forward to celebrating the birth of Christ on Christmas Day. When we practice Advent today, it\u2019s essentially the same thing\u2014it\u2019s a way to mark the time, but it\u2019s also a way to build anticipation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there are some real benefits for families. The first one is\u2014it teaches us to be patient. We are <em>not<\/em> a patient people in this culture\u2014our children aren\u2019t patient \/ we\u2019re not patient\u2014we\u2019re so used to everything being readily available whenever we want it. If you mark Advent\u2014and you can only open one little box, and you have to wait a whole week for the next one\u2014it teaches us, as people, to be patient. That is a good quality \/ it\u2019s a good attribute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother benefit, I think, for celebrating or marking the days of Advent is that it helps us to pause and reflect about who Christ is. Another is that it builds anticipation\u2014when we\u2019re anticipating, we are believing. I think that\u2019s really, really good for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReason number four is that Advent encourages eternal decisions; because I think, when we take the time to think about Jesus and why He came to earth, it naturally makes us go, \u201cOh; do I know Him?\u201d\u00a0 As moms and dads, it\u2019s a great opportunity for you to say to your kids, \u201cDo you know Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 Advent is a way for us to pause in the middle of the busy season and take advantage of Advent\u2014it helps us have those conversations. It may lead to the most important decision you or one of your kids will ever make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I know, at our house\u2014especially when our kids were younger\u2014there was a lot of anticipation and expectation during the Christmas season \/ during the Advent season\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it was expectation and anticipation around, \u201cWhat am I getting on Christmas morning?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; of course. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not a whole lot of expectation or anticipation around celebrating the birth of Jesus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014or having a Christ-centered focus. anything to celebrate the Advent season?\u00a0 Are you even familiar with what Advent is?\u00a0 Here\u2019s Barbara Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>The term, \u201cadvent,\u201d just means Jesus\u2019 coming\u2014it means the time when He came to earth \/ He left heaven. The Book of John tells us He was sent by God\u2014He left heaven, and He came to earth. He became a baby, as we all know in the story, and was born and lived and gave His life for us. But the time\u2014those weeks leading up to Christmas\u2014years ago, in the Middle Ages or somewhere in there, the church fathers met and decided that this would be a good time to help people prepare their hearts to celebrate and to worship when Christmas Day actually came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a great concept because, in our culture today, we don\u2019t wait very well, we do not celebrate very well, and we don\u2019t mark the days very well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there is some benefit\u2014especially for families\u2014to mark those Sundays of Advent with, even, a ten-minute gathering. Get together before bed time, if you have to\u2014or after breakfast or whenever it works\u2014and just think together about what this season is all about. The whole idea of Advent is preparing your heart to worship and to appropriately celebrate the gift of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 28<sup>th<\/sup>. I just\u2014I\u2019m wondering: \u201cDo you guys have, at your house, somebody who comes through\u2014like at the end of the weekend after Thanksgiving\u2014and says: \u2018Okay; we\u2019ve got to do a major shift here!\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to take all the Thanksgiving stuff down\u2019?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re looking at him. [Laughter] My martyr meter is going off right now. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>There\u2019s not that much Thanksgiving stuff to take down; mind you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There really isn\u2019t; but I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014the Christmas\u2014we have it out in a little storage shed. I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s a lot, but we hire an 18-wheeler to move the 200 feet from our storage shed up to our back door. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had to put an addition on the storage shed\u2014didn\u2019t you?\u2014just to handle more Christmas stuff over the years?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You guys are terrible!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We are terrible. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You are, because it\u2019s so <em>not<\/em> true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>But the truth is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Barbara\u2014you know, here is the thing, Bob\u2014this is a paradox of life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong><br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Barbara says her favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And by the way, Barbara is joining us again today. Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Welcome back, Sweetheart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, Thanksgiving, which we\u2019ve just completed\u2014your favorite holiday; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; and the rest of the sentence is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why are there <em>boxes<\/em> of Christmas gear that we bring in?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Because there is so <em>much<\/em> more available to purchase, and to display, and to decorate with for Christmas than there is for Thanksgiving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Especially since you created Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s part of it too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have declared the reason for the season, both at Thanksgiving and at Christmas\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>So, part of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and at Valentine\u2019s, and at Easter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>\u2014and Easter. Part of the reason\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and the Fourth of July!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Part of the reason we have more at Christmas now is because we have all the old stuff\u2014all the old Santa, snowmen \/ things have nothing to do with Jesus\u2014stuff that I haven\u2019t gotten rid of yet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what I think?\u2014[whispering]\u2014they could disappear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>They could. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>[Whispering] They might\u2014they might vanish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But we\u2019ve replaced them with all the new things about Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you see an extra trash can out at the curb tonight when you go home\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I\u2019ll know what it is; yes! [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you will know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It may be my body!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you will know that your husband has decided to edit some of your Christmas decorations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This could be the end of me! [Laughter]\u00a0 No; we have a good time with it\u2014I really enjoy the season. We do pull it out, and there is a transition. There\u2019s not that much gear that comes down from Thanksgiving \/ there is a good amount that comes <em>up<\/em> to celebrate Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ve been to your home at Christmastime. I just love\u2014there is a red vinyl record that you\u2019ve had up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>You like my old records?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I <em>love<\/em> the old records. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I do too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You knew that would be something that I would gravitate toward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But what is it? I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s <em>Joy to the World<\/em>. What is it?\u00a0 Do you remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it may be <em>Hark!<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>The Herald Angels Sing<\/em>; but I have three of these <em>old<\/em> records left from my childhood. We had stacks of them that my brother and I used to play on our little record player. For some reason, I ended up with these three\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014two are red and one is a 78 [RPM]\u2014which nobody knows what that is anymore except you [Bob]. One is a 78, and it\u2019s yellow. I put those up on little plate stands every year at Christmas. They are just some of my favorite things that I put out every year at Christmas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; well, I have to be honest with you\u2014since we have become empty-nesters at our house, we\u2019ve had the conversation of \u201cCan we just kind of scale back the home decorating?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was one thing when the kids were home\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and you really wanted to create an atmosphere. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Have your kids let you have it for doing that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I mean, they only show up for a few days; and you can endure that. [Laughter] I\u2019m just curious: \u201cHave you thought about scaling back since it\u2019s just the two of you now?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; we have scaled back. In fact, when we did some remodeling on our house a few years ago, I didn\u2019t even put up a full-sized tree \/ it wasn\u2019t even a fresh tree\u2014I had a smaller tree that was a table-top tree. When I got that and I set it up, I heard in my head the words that I said to myself when I was a young wife: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI will <em>never<\/em> do a table-top tree like all these <em>old<\/em> people that I know.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 All of a sudden, I thought: \u201cOh my gosh!\u00a0 I\u2019m one of <em>those<\/em>. [Laughter] What has happened to me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re not an old person; trust me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you have scaled back?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>We have scaled back; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Because Dennis makes it sound like it\u2019s just getting bigger and bigger every year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It is not getting bigger and bigger every year. So, sorry, dear; I disagree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you have it\u2014another great illustration ruined by an eye-witness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Here\u2019s what has happened at your home\u2014and we talked about this earlier. Some the old decorations that were festive have been replaced by decorations that are more purposeful. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And this is something that I know\u2014over the last five years \/ maybe longer than that\u2014has become a real burden for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019ve wanted to find Christmas decorations\u2014whether it was ornaments or other kinds of things that I could put out at Christmas\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014for 20 years, I\u2019ve been looking for things that were about Christ, other than a Nativity set, which we had a couple of, and we put those up every year. Other than a Nativity set of some kind, it was very hard to find anything to hang on a Christmas tree that was about Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that I\u2019ve started creating these Christmas ornaments that are about Jesus, called Adorenaments<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, that\u2019s what my tree is covered with now. I don\u2019t put up all the other ones that we used to put up when the kids were at home. We don\u2019t have Santas, and reindeer, and snowmen, and footballs, and all of that stuff on our tree anymore\u2014partly because the kids are gone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf the kids were still home and little, and they wanted to hang those ornaments, we would hang them; but I would also put up ornaments about Christ, because Christmas is about Jesus. I want anyone who comes in our home\u2014<em>and<\/em> those of us who live in our home\u2014to be reminded every day, during the month of December, that what we are celebrating is about Jesus Christ\u2014it\u2019s about His birth \/ it\u2019s about His incarnation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not about all this extra stuff, and I want that to be preeminent in our home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Some of our listeners will know that we are in a season\u2014that, on the church calendar, is an official season. In fact, some listeners, this week at church, will have lit a candle as part of the worship service around an Advent wreath. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They are marking out Advent as a season. I know other listeners are going, \u201cI thought Advent was something that the church down the street did, and we don\u2019t do it,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s a foreign term for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is something that you\u2019ve kind of dug into and said: \u201cWhat\u2019s the history of Advent?\u201d and \u201cWhy has the church marked out this season in advance of Christmas?\u201d\u00a0 What have you found?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, the term, \u201cadvent,\u201d just means Jesus\u2019 coming\u2014it means the time when He came to earth \/ He left heaven. The Book of John tells us He was sent by God\u2014He left heaven, and He came to earth. He became a baby, as we all know in the story, and was born and, then, lived and gave His life for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the time\u2014those weeks leading up to Christmas\u2014years ago, in the Middle Ages or somewhere in there, the church fathers met and decided that this would be a good time to help people prepare their hearts to celebrate and to worship when Christmas Day actually came. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a great concept because, in our culture today, we don\u2019t wait very well, we do not celebrate very well, and we don\u2019t mark the days very well. I think there is some benefit\u2014especially for families\u2014to mark those Sundays of Advent with, even, a ten- minute gathering. Get together before bed time, if you have to\u2014or after breakfast or whenever it works\u2014and just think together about what this season is all about. We\u2019ve got some ways that we want to tell you about that we think that you could do that, but the whole idea of Advent is preparing your heart to worship and to appropriately celebrate the gift of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Advent can be celebrated on each Sunday, leading up to Christmas, as it is this year. It\u2019s already started\u2014people begin to celebrate Advent, thinking about the coming of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s also celebrated on a daily basis, leading up to Christmas Eve\u2014and, then, Christmas morning\u2014where the arrival of the Christ-child and the celebration of Him coming and physically visiting the planet can be talked about, as a family, and what that meant for us, as individuals; us, as a family; and also our world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re encouraging listeners to be intentional and purposeful during the Christmas season this year. We\u2019ve got some suggestions we\u2019ve been sending out to folks and will be sending out during the Advent season. You can go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com, to find out how you can get these emails or these text messages sent to you during the season so that your family can be more purposeful, more focused, more intentional during this season of the year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember\u2014when I was growing up, we had an Advent calendar\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014different one every year\u2014that we would get out. Each day on the calendar was covered up with something. As a child, I either got to tear off the piece of cardboard to show what was behind the date or I got to flip something over and see what was revealed\u2014always something hidden that is revealed each day. That\u2019s part of what we are remembering during the Advent season\u2014is that there is expectation\u2014there is something hidden that is about to be revealed. Each day of Advent, we\u2019re expectant \/ we\u2019re anticipating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was one calendar that we got one year, where there was a piece of chocolate behind every day. That got attention paid to it. Trust me!\u00a0 Every day at breakfast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve never forgotten it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was your favorite; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; of course!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And we had one, when we were raising little children, that was kind of a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It was felt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014it was felt. You pulled out an ornament\u2014a candy cane \/ a Santa Claus\u2014again, it was not centered on Christ as you would think it would be as an Advent calendar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just listening to Barbara talk about this, Bob\u2014over 25 years ago, she began to look around and to search for ways that were about Christ in helping us celebrate His advent\/His coming to the plant\u2014but also, things that were beautiful, that were elegant, that weren\u2019t just plastic but were heirlooms that could be passed on to future generations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You started with the Christmas tree, and this is your fifth year to make ornaments for trees?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Back, five years ago, you came up with a set of seven ornaments that were all around the Christmas names of Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>The next year, you did His royal names\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014in the shape of crowns. The year after that, you did His Savior names that were all in crosses\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014different crosses from different eras in church history. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Last year, you took the name of Jesus and you had it in different languages with the different alphabets from those languages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This year, you\u2019ve got a new set of ornaments?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>We do. We have a new set. We\u2019ve titled these \u201cHis Advent Names,\u201d appropriately, because these ornaments\u2014there are four of them this year\u2014they are all round, and they\u2019re all globes. You see the continents of the world on these globes; and then, each one has a name of Christ. Then, on the other side of the globe, it has the verse where that name is found in the Bible. The focus of this set of ornaments is that He came to earth. We visually created globes to remind us that Jesus came to earth for us; and then, these are some names that are associated with His advent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what are the four names you used this year?\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>The four names are \u201cJesus is the Light\u201d \/ He came to be the light of the world\u2014\u201cJesus is the Son\u201d \/ \u201cFor God so loved the world that He gave His Son\u2026\u201d\u2014\u201cJesus is the Word\u201d \/ \u201cFor the word became flesh and dwelt among us,\u201d \/ that\u2019s all about His birth in the manger. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, the last one is \u201cThe Messenger\u201d; and it\u2019s about Jesus coming to bring good news and to tell us who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Everybody who has seen these\u2014and seen the others that Barbara created\u2014say these are their favorites \/ that the globes that feature the names of Christ really are spectacular and also, again, call attention to the reason why He came to the planet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just think it\u2019s important, Bob, as we hang these ornaments on our trees, to bring our children \/ our grandchildren into the experience and talk about\u2014not just hang the globe or hang the name on the tree, but to talk about: \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d\u00a0 You could literally take all 25 of these ornaments that Barbara has created over all\u2014His Christmas names, His Royal names, His Savior names, and now, His Advent names\u2014you could turn your Christmas tree\u2014over the next, well, almost 24\/25 days\u2014into an Advent Christmas tree. One day after another, hang one of these on your tree and talk about the name of Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and introduce your children or, as a couple, talk about, \u201cHow is Jesus the Light of the World?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And radio really doesn\u2019t do justice to these. Again, I\u2019ll encourage listeners to go to FamliyLifeToday.com, where they can see what you\u2019ve created. In fact, Advent\u2014you kind of didn\u2019t pay attention to Advent until your kids were grown; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I paid attention to it when we were raising our kids, but I didn\u2019t know what to do with it; because I was too busy\u2014and school parties\u2014you know, there were just too many things going on during the month of December. I think every mom, listening, would say the same thing. It\u2019s a very, very busy season\u2014we <em>want<\/em> to do all those things with our kids, and we want to do gifts for all these people, and we wear ourselves out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, even though I wanted to do Advent, I didn\u2019t know of an easy way to do it. The times that I tried it, we only did one Sunday; and then, we never finished. I felt like a failure, and I didn\u2019t like feeling like a failure. I just thought: \u201cWell, forget that. We won\u2019t do Advent in our house, because it\u2019s just too hard to pull it off.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I do think that Advent is worth practicing, even if you only do it once. That\u2019s what I didn\u2019t understand when I was a mom\u2014that doing something\u2014even just doing one time\u2014is better than nothing. I think that\u2019s my encouragement to moms and to women is: \u201cEven if you just do one Sunday \/ even if you do one something, it\u2019s better than nothing.\u201d I think that makes it valuable, because you\u2019re being intentional. You\u2019re creating some moments of meaning with your family if you try to make a pause in your life\u2014take a timeout from your busyness\u2014to reflect on who Christ is and what He came to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the significance of this is way underestimated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, over in Philippians 2, it talks about\u2014someday, at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is the Lord, to the glory of God the Father. I think we underestimate that these names\u2014and interestingly, how many names in your study did you find in the Scriptures were the names of Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Some scholars say over 300. I don\u2019t know\u2014I\u2019ve not counted them\u2014but there are a lot more names than any of us have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, these 25 names that she\u2019s illustrating with these Adorenaments\u2014these are <em>powerful<\/em> names that give parents practical ways to teach your children about who God is\u2014talking about how Jesus is the Light of the World \/ how He is the Word\u2014and how they need the Word today; how they need to have a guide \/ how they need to have a direction for their lives. If they don\u2019t, they\u2019re going to be obedient to the world and going to conform to the world. So, because Christ came, He showed us what a straight line really is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And some listeners, I know, are thinking, \u201cI\u2019ve heard about Advent, but our church doesn\u2019t do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey feel like, maybe, there is something just strange about it; because it\u2019s unfamiliar. What would you say to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, I would say familiarity doesn\u2019t always mean that is right. I think that just because it\u2019s different doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s something that you shouldn\u2019t do. There is value in taking some time, as a family\u2014or even just as a husband and wife if you don\u2019t have kids yet\u2014to talk about the names of Christ, and to talk about who He is, and why He came. That\u2019s what Advent is all about\u2014it\u2019s preparing your heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I think anytime we can pause and prepare our heart to welcome Him \/ to give Him worship, we\u2019re going to be better for it. It may be a little different than something you\u2019ve heard of, but just think of what the word [Advent] means\u2014it just means preparing for His coming. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain for listeners what the benefits are of taking time out to focus on Jesus during the Advent season. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>The whole purpose for Advent\u2014the reason that the church fathers came up with this idea, back in the Middle Ages, was to encourage people, who were believers in Christ, to prepare their hearts for Christmas Day. It\u2019s a way to anticipate His coming \/ it\u2019s a way to look forward to celebrating the birth of Christ on Christmas Day. When we practice Advent today, it\u2019s essentially the same thing\u2014it\u2019s a way to mark the time, but it\u2019s also a way to build anticipation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there are some real benefits for families. The first one is\u2014it teaches us to be patient. We are <em>not<\/em> a patient people in this culture\u2014our children aren\u2019t patient \/ we\u2019re not patient\u2014we\u2019re so used to everything being readily available whenever we want it. If you mark Advent\u2014and you can only open one little box, and you have to wait a whole week for the next one\u2014it teaches us, as people, to be patient. That is a good quality \/ it\u2019s a good attribute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother benefit, I think, for celebrating or marking the days of Advent is that it helps us to pause and reflect about who Christ is. Another is that it builds anticipation\u2014when we\u2019re anticipating, we are believing. I think that\u2019s really, really good for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReason number four is that Advent encourages eternal decisions; because I think, when we take the time to think about Jesus and why He came to earth, it naturally makes us go, \u201cOh; do I know Him?\u201d\u00a0 As moms and dads, it\u2019s a great opportunity for you to say to your kids, \u201cDo you know Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 Advent is a way for us to pause in the middle of the busy season and take advantage of Advent\u2014it helps us have those conversations. It may lead to the most important decision you or one of your kids will ever make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I know, at our house\u2014especially when our kids were younger\u2014there was a lot of anticipation and expectation during the Christmas season \/ during the Advent season\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it was expectation and anticipation around, \u201cWhat am I getting on Christmas morning?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; of course. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not a whole lot of expectation or anticipation around celebrating the birth of Jesus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014or having a Christ-centered focus.
