She went to meet and bring home the eight children that God had arranged for her and her husband Mike to adopt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>It was a surreal \/ absolutely surreal moment. As we\u2019re walking up the driveway, that\u2019s when I finally saw our oldest son\u2014our oldest child at the time. He was the one that I was kind of really\u2014I was a little nervous about. I see him, and we made eye contact. It was like love just came down. All those, over a decade-long, just lost memories that I had with him\u2014God just flooded me with just this pure love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, November 23<sup>rd<\/sup>. We have some adoptive parents with us in the studio\u2014not just our guests\u2014but our host is an adoptive parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; you\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re a dad. One of your six was adopted; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. We don\u2019t know which one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. That\u2019s something that you and Barbara had decided\u2014you didn\u2019t decide before you got married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. I never had a conscious thought about adopting, prior to marrying Barbara. It\u2019s a disease\u2014[Laughter]\u2014she infected me with it. If you read the Bible, the Bible will infect you with it; because it\u2019s a part of God\u2019s heart. It really isn\u2019t a disease \/ it\u2019s a blessing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014absolutely. Their bio says they are the Jones Dozen; okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The Jones Dozen. Well, by the time they got here, they are the Jones Baker\u2019s Dozen, which is 13. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There are 13 Jones\u201411 children at your house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what happened between the time you told us you had ten kids and\u2014how did number eleven get here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>God\u2019s got a sense of humor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; He does. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there a day that you walked downstairs and said, \u201cHoney, I\u2019ve got some news for you\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>No; it was on Father\u2019s Day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; I had the news on Father\u2019s Day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>I got a card for Father\u2019s Day. There, in the card, she told me I was going to be a dad again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Said, \u201cEight wasn\u2019t enough.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had\u2014your jaw just had to <em>drop<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>I was in shock. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long have you guys been married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Seventeen years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright; and you thought your family was done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, now, maybe\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014did you think it was done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I have learned to never think anything on your own. I was not planning on having another child, but I have learned you never know what God has planned. I just let Him lead, because He\u2019s done a pretty good job so far. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Amazing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Our listeners, who have not been with us this week, don\u2019t know the whole story; but your marriage almost ended, three years in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys were separated, contemplating divorce. God brought you back together again. You had two kids and, then, started thinking about adoption\u2014and went from thinking about one to, maybe, two. All of a sudden, God laid on your heart, Mike, that it needed to be a sibling group of eight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, no, no. Mike negotiated with God for four\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; once he heard, \u201cEight,\u201d he\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and he got into a wrestling match with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And guess who won?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Guess who won?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He doubled the four to eight children\u2014a whole family. I want to make sure our listeners know this \/ the whole story is in their book, <em>At Any Cost: Overcoming Every Obstacle to Bring Our Children Home<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to know how you finally met your children for the first time. I\u2019m not talking about when they <em>were<\/em> your children. I just want to know, face to face, how early in the process did you see, and touch, and hug the seven boys and one girl, out of one family, that you would adopt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>That\u2019s the thing\u2014when we committed to and God told me that I was to adopt eight children\u2014we didn\u2019t know if that was six girls and two boys \/ any of them had special needs\u2014we had no idea. They were just a list of names on paper that we didn\u2019t even read. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had to learn\u2014after we had told the lady that started the orphan care center, we had to learn and wanted to know information about these children that God wanted us to have. Hayley\u2019s got a good story about sending her that email, trying to explain it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I typed up the email, telling her this story and that we\u2019re supposed to adopt eight children. I typed it\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times. I kept deleting it, because it just seemed so silly. I mean, how do you tell people that?\u00a0 She knows us, and she knows we didn\u2019t have the money. It just seemed\u2014the whole idea did just seem ridiculous: \u201cBut I\u2019ve got to do it!\u201d\u00a0 So, I did. Of course, her heart for orphans and just her understanding for how God worked\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she wasn\u2019t worried about that. She knew God would work it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told her to send us information about the children. We\u2019re sitting on a couch, with a laptop. She\u2019s sending me these pictures of the kids\u2014we\u2019re opening them up. Tyler is sitting with us. It\u2019s one of these big files\u2014so it takes a really long time for the picture to load. It kind of starts at the top and scrolls down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we\u2019re opening, we\u2019re like: \u201cIt\u2019s a boy!\u00a0 It\u2019s a boy!\u201d\u2014another picture: \u201cIt\u2019s a boy!\u201d\u00a0 They just kept coming. It was a really exciting moment for our family\u2014especially, Tyler had been praying with us. Now, he\u2019s getting to see who is going to be his future brothers and sister. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your little story there, kind of reminds me of one about a boy, who heard his mom and dad talking about having another baby. The little boy decided he\u2019d start praying\u2014so he prayed, and prayed, and prayed. The parents came to him one time and said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have\u2014we\u2019re going to have a child.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe mother, of course, ultimately gave birth\u2014not to one, but to two. They brought the little boy in. There she is\u2014holding two babies in her arms\u2014and said, \u201cNow, Johnny, aren\u2019t you glad you prayed?\u201d\u00a0 He looked back at them and said, \u201cYes; and aren\u2019t you glad I quit when I did?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou kept praying, and God kept providing those seven boys and one little girl. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I just have to know\u2014it is one thing to send the adoption worker your plans: \u201cWe want to adopt the sibling group.\u201d\u00a0 She says: \u201cPraise the Lord!\u00a0 God\u2019s going to provide.\u201d\u00a0 But you had to tell your parents \/ you had to tell your parents. I mean, this is not news that is going to be universally embraced by all of your friends and family members, I\u2019m guessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>No; that was the most nerve-wrecking for me during that time. We had committed in May. We decided, on Father\u2019s Day that year\u2014Father\u2019s Day is always a big day for us with news\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we decided, on Father\u2019s Day, to tell the grandparents. We went to his parents\u2019 house that afternoon, and my parents came over that night. I was just <em>so<\/em> nervous and just felt sick to my stomach. I was dreading it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is how many years after your marriage had nearly dissolved in a divorce?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Four\u2014about four-and-a-half. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, there had been time for a track record between you two to be established, where there was a good amount of trust\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that your marriage wasn\u2019t on the precipice any longer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>And we had two children at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; his parents came over, and we sat on the couch. Mike just started telling them the story of what had happened, and he just broke down. His parents knew him in the same way that I did\u2014that he\u2019s not one to breakdown. So, they knew that God had really been working on him. We showed them the pictures that we had printed out from the computer that she had sent us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was one of those things, where they were completely in shock; but they were trying\u2014probably, trying not to overreact\u2014but his mother did say, \u201cIf this is what God\u2019s called you to do, then, you just have to do it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat afternoon, when my parents came over, it was kind of the same thing. I got to do more of the talking then. He made me do more of the talking then, I should say; because he talked for his parents. And my mother\u2014she was really funny\u2014because afterwards, she said\u2014once I said the \u201ceight,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cWe\u2019re adopting eight siblings,\u201d\u2014she said, \u201cI could see your mouth moving, but I have absolutely <em>no<\/em> idea what you said the rest of the time.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, in John 14, Jesus said, \u201cI will not leave you as orphans.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s His statement about us He was making to the disciples, speaking that He was not going to abandon us\u2014but He was going to ransom His life to adopt us if we trust in Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; we\u2019re talking to a couple who know that full well. They\u2019ve written a book called <em>At Any Cost: Overcoming Every Obstacle to Bring Our Children Home<\/em>. Mike and Hayley Jones are our guests today. We\u2019ve got copies of their book at FamilyLifeToday.com if you\u2019re interested in finding out more about the eight children that they adopted to go along with their, now, three biological children to make a family of 11, living outside of Nashville, Tennessee. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me go back to what Dennis asked you earlier\u2014the first time you were, face to face, with the eight Jones children\u2014who were not yet Jones children but had been ordained to be Jones children from before the foundation of the earth; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; I flew over to Sierra Leone. The flight arrived very late at night; so I didn\u2019t get to see the children that night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re by yourself?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I was\u2014well, I was with a team of about ten other ladies. We were staying at a house that was just two doors down from where the orphanage was at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were staying there. I could not sleep at all \/ I was just so excited\u2014trying\u2014you know, I had these pictures, and I was imagining them; but I was so ready\u2014I just wanted to see them \/ to touch them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next morning, bright and early, we all got ready and started walking to the next driveway. The kids\u2014they do a great big celebration at the orphanage anytime people come. They had lined up down the long driveway, and they sing a couple of different songs. We can hear all the little voices, and two of my younger children were right up front. So, I saw them, just first thing; and they came running up to me\u2014they\u2019re singing. It was a surreal \/ absolutely surreal moment as we\u2019re walking up the driveway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when we get up into the orphanage, they have chairs lined up for all the guests to sit. That\u2019s when I finally saw our oldest. He was one that I was kind of really\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I was a little nervous about. He was the oldest \/ he had been the father figure. I don\u2019t know\u2014I didn\u2019t have a child that old \/ I wasn\u2019t sure. I was kind of nervous about that relationship\u2014would he be accepting to me?\u00a0 It was kind of a nerve-wracking moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How old was he?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>He was 12 at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A father figure\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at 12. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. So, we get up there, and all the guests are lined up in front. I see him, and we made eye contact. I don\u2019t know how else to describe that moment, but just\u2014it was like love just came down. [Emotion in voice] All those, over a decade-long, lost memories that I had with him\u2014God just flooded me just with this pure love. I knew, right then, that it was just kind of another God-nod along the way. That just sealed the deal\u2014that: \u201cI don\u2019t care what I have to go through. These kids are ours, and I will fight for it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had no idea in that moment the fight that you were going to be in for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>None. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How many trips?\u2014how many months in Sierra Leone?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>It was about ten trips; but during those trips, I would stay\u2014it varied two, three, four months, at a time, just trying to work with the government there to get things moving and get things done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This was a three-year process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said, even to the day before, you had no idea that you were on the verge of a breakthrough. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. No; it was\u2014even up to the point of getting visas, our counselor was saying: \u201cYes; you\u2019ll have the visas. Come pick them up this day.\u201d\u00a0 Other people in the embassy: \u201cNo; no one is leaving.\u201d\u00a0 It was just\u2014it was this whirlwind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What about the danger in the country?\u00a0 Did you feel like you were ever in danger?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Hayley: <\/strong>The first time I landed in Sierra Leone\u2014my first visit there\u2014I just felt a peace there. There is something about that land, something about those people, and something about that country that I <em>love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love the simple way of life. It\u2019s not easy\u2014I mean, there\u2019s no running water \/ there\u2019s no electricity. You hand wash all your clothes. You have to go fetch your water and carry it with buckets on your head. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>If you have $5; and I needed the $5, you would give it to me\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; you wouldn\u2019t think anything about it\u2014you\u2019d just give it. They take care of each other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>\u2014and you have nothing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>\u2014in a way. You know, when you need $5, somebody is going to give it to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I ask that question, because we\u2019re talking about overcoming the obstacles\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014to get those children back to America, in your home. Just going there\u2014for a lot of people\u2014is a big deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>And I would always travel by myself. Mike and I never travelled together, because one of us had to be at home with the other children; but God kept me safe. There were definitely safety precautions and things that you had to take, and I can\u2019t be out at night. I can\u2019t carry a purse that\u2019s visible for people to see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But when I was there, I had such a purpose. I knew every time, when I was in that country, that I was supposed be when I was supposed to be there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mike, tell me about the phone call you got from Hayley, when she said: \u201cIt\u2019s done. We\u2019re coming home.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>It was just joyful. I mean, knowing what God had told us, all along, was coming to fruition\u2014I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This had been a three-year journey; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And so, to get that phone call\u2014kind of out of the blue\u2014it wasn\u2019t like she said, \u201cMaybe, tomorrow or, maybe, next week.\u201d\u00a0 She just calls and says: \u201cIt happened. We\u2019re coming\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Well, leading up to that, it took about two-and-a-half years to get our court order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>Another six to eight months to get the visas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>And another six to eight months to get the visas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter we had our court order, I was working with the U.S. Embassy, trying to get visas; but I sat down, one day, at the dining room table. I said: \u201cGod, I need You to give me a word. I feel lost here. We\u2019ve got the adoption court order. I have <em>no<\/em> idea when the kids are coming home, and I need some reassurance.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI opened up my Bible, and it went to 2 Kings 19:25\u2014it says: \u201cHave you not heard long ago I ordained it?\u00a0 In days of old, I planned it. Now, I have brought it to pass.\u201d\u00a0 That day, I felt such a peace; and I called Mike\u2014I said: \u201cWe don\u2019t have the visa appointment yet. We don\u2019t have permission to leave with the kids, but I think I need to call and buy plane tickets. I think they are coming home.\u201d\u00a0 Literally, I called the airline; and we booked all the plane tickets\u2014we had no visas \/ we had nothing yet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did you pay for that many tickets?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>We did some fundraising for the plane tickets. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And these are kids, who have never been near an airplane, much less\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014ridden on one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, take us to the airport in America. I\u2019d love to know more about the ride\u2014I mean, that had to be <em>one<\/em> fascinating\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I will say it was the first time, obviously, they had ever seen a plane. Walking up those steps into the airplane, it was like going up the ladder into heaven. It was just\u2014it was such an excitement and such a relief. I will say one of the biggest lessons I think we learned in the three-year journey\u2014and kind of the biggest blessing was\u2014it gave us time to become a family. I lived over there. We were Mom and Dad <em>long<\/em> before they came home. So, they were <em>ready<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had prayed for this moment as well \/ they had dreamed of this moment as well. So, it made this excitement for them; and they got to see how God works through problems. Sometimes, things aren\u2019t always easy; but they got to learn to depend on God through this process too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re at the Nashville airport with, I imagine, a lot of your church family around you \/ a lot of your biological family around you. There had to be a welcome-home contingency as big as anything Nashville\u2019s ever seen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>We probably had a couple hundred people there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Television?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike and Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sure. So, what was it like, Dad?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> It was surreal, holding my daughter\u2019s hand, and walking my kids up to meet and greet everybody. It was just\u2014it was a proud moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your sedan had been traded in, long ago, for something that holds a few more passengers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>Yes; we got a fifteen-passenger van. They had always wanted new names when they came home. And for years, God had just been\u2014He had taken care of them. We wanted each of their names to reflect that; so they each have a biblical name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, there are times all through Scripture, where names get changed. It\u2019s a significant moment that marks the difference between an old life and a new life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what you were doing; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly what I explained to them\u2014I said: \u201cWe\u2019re <em>all<\/em> adopted children of God. God adopted us all.\u201d\u00a0 And I said: \u201cYou all have a birth name, and that\u2019s your past\u2014that\u2019s part of who you are\u2014but now, we get to have a new beginning and start something new. We don\u2019t <em>lose<\/em> or forget the past, but we get to add on and make something new with our future.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, tell how you got the first one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Okay; so our oldest one, we named Michael. Of course, we all know that is an angel warrior\u2014so that is where his name came from. It\u2019s also Mike\u2019s name\u2014he gets to share that name with his dad. Michael is our oldest\u2014our kind of angel warrior \/ the leader. Samuel means \u201cGod heard.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, he\u2019s prayed for; and God answered our prayers. As we\u2019re walking up the driveway, that\u2019s when I finally saw our oldest son\u2014our oldest child at the time. He was the one that I was kind of really\u2014I was a little nervous about. I see him, and we made eye contact. It was like love just came down. All those, over a decade-long, just lost memories that I had with him\u2014God just flooded me with just this pure love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, November 23<sup>rd<\/sup>. We have some adoptive parents with us in the studio\u2014not just our guests\u2014but our host is an adoptive parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; you\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re a dad. One of your six was adopted; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. We don\u2019t know which one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. That\u2019s something that you and Barbara had decided\u2014you didn\u2019t decide before you got married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. I never had a conscious thought about adopting, prior to marrying Barbara. It\u2019s a disease\u2014[Laughter]\u2014she infected me with it. If you read the Bible, the Bible will infect you with it; because it\u2019s a part of God\u2019s heart. It really isn\u2019t a disease \/ it\u2019s a blessing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014absolutely. Well, by the time they got here, they are the Jones Baker\u2019s Dozen, which is 13. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There are 13 Jones\u201411 children at your house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what happened between the time you told us you had ten kids and\u2014how did number eleven get here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>God\u2019s got a sense of humor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; He does. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was there a day that you walked downstairs and said, \u201cHoney, I\u2019ve got some news for you\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>No; it was on Father\u2019s Day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; I had the news on Father\u2019s Day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>I got a card for Father\u2019s Day. There, in the card, she told me I was going to be a dad again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Said, \u201cEight wasn\u2019t enough.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had\u2014your jaw just had to <em>drop<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>I was in shock. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How long have you guys been married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Seventeen years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Alright; and you thought your family was done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, now, maybe\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014did you think it was done?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I have learned to never think anything on your own. I was not planning on having another child, but I have learned you never know what God has planned. I just let Him lead, because He\u2019s done a pretty good job so far. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Amazing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Our listeners, who have not been with us this week, don\u2019t know the whole story; but your marriage almost ended, three years in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys were separated, contemplating divorce. God brought you back together again. You had two kids and, then, started thinking about adoption\u2014and went from thinking about one to, maybe, two. All of a sudden, God laid on your heart, Mike, that it needed to be a sibling group of eight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, no, no. Mike negotiated with God for four\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; once he heard, \u201cEight,\u201d he\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and he got into a wrestling match with God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And guess who won?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Guess who won?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He doubled the four to eight children\u2014a whole family. I want to make sure our listeners know this \/ the whole story is in their book, <em>At Any Cost: Overcoming Every Obstacle to Bring Our Children Home<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to know how you finally met your children for the first time. I\u2019m not talking about when they <em>were<\/em> your children. I just want to know, face to face, how early in the process did you see, and touch, and hug the seven boys and one girl, out of one family, that you would adopt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>That\u2019s the thing\u2014when we committed to and God told me that I was to adopt eight children\u2014we didn\u2019t know if that was six girls and two boys \/ any of them had special needs\u2014we had no idea. They were just a list of names on paper that we didn\u2019t even read. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had to learn\u2014after we had told the lady that started the orphan care center, we had to learn and wanted to know information about these children that God wanted us to have. Hayley\u2019s got a good story about sending her that email, trying to explain it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I typed up the email, telling her this story and that we\u2019re supposed to adopt eight children. I typed it\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times. I kept deleting it, because it just seemed so silly. I mean, how do you tell people that?\u00a0 She knows us, and she knows we didn\u2019t have the money. It just seemed\u2014the whole idea did just seem ridiculous: \u201cBut I\u2019ve got to do it!\u201d\u00a0 So, I did. Of course, her heart for orphans and just her understanding for how God worked\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she wasn\u2019t worried about that. She knew God would work it out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told her to send us information about the children. We\u2019re sitting on a couch, with a laptop. She\u2019s sending me these pictures of the kids\u2014we\u2019re opening them up. Tyler is sitting with us. It\u2019s one of these big files\u2014so it takes a really long time for the picture to load. It kind of starts at the top and scrolls down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we\u2019re opening, we\u2019re like: \u201cIt\u2019s a boy!\u00a0 It\u2019s a boy!\u201d\u2014another picture: \u201cIt\u2019s a boy!\u201d\u00a0 They just kept coming. It was a really exciting moment for our family\u2014especially, Tyler had been praying with us. Now, he\u2019s getting to see who is going to be his future brothers and sister. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your little story there, kind of reminds me of one about a boy, who heard his mom and dad talking about having another baby. The little boy decided he\u2019d start praying\u2014so he prayed, and prayed, and prayed. The parents came to him one time and said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have\u2014we\u2019re going to have a child.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe mother, of course, ultimately gave birth\u2014not to one, but to two. They brought the little boy in. There she is\u2014holding two babies in her arms\u2014and said, \u201cNow, Johnny, aren\u2019t you glad you prayed?\u201d\u00a0 He looked back at them and said, \u201cYes; and aren\u2019t you glad I quit when I did?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou kept praying, and God kept providing those seven boys and one little girl. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I just have to know\u2014it is one thing to send the adoption worker your plans: \u201cWe want to adopt the sibling group.\u201d\u00a0 She says: \u201cPraise the Lord!\u00a0 God\u2019s going to provide.\u201d\u00a0 But you had to tell your parents \/ you had to tell your parents. I mean, this is not news that is going to be universally embraced by all of your friends and family members, I\u2019m guessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>No; that was the most nerve-wrecking for me during that time. We had committed in May. We decided, on Father\u2019s Day that year\u2014Father\u2019s Day is always a big day for us with news\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we decided, on Father\u2019s Day, to tell the grandparents. We went to his parents\u2019 house that afternoon, and my parents came over that night. I was just <em>so<\/em> nervous and just felt sick to my stomach. I was dreading it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is how many years after your marriage had nearly dissolved in a divorce?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Four\u2014about four-and-a-half. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, there had been time for a track record between you two to be established, where there was a good amount of trust\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that your marriage wasn\u2019t on the precipice any longer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>And we had two children at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; his parents came over, and we sat on the couch. Mike just started telling them the story of what had happened, and he just broke down. His parents knew him in the same way that I did\u2014that he\u2019s not one to breakdown. So, they knew that God had really been working on him. We showed them the pictures that we had printed out from the computer that she had sent us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was one of those things, where they were completely in shock; but they were trying\u2014probably, trying not to overreact\u2014but his mother did say, \u201cIf this is what God\u2019s called you to do, then, you just have to do it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat afternoon, when my parents came over, it was kind of the same thing. I got to do more of the talking then. He made me do more of the talking then, I should say; because he talked for his parents. And my mother\u2014she was really funny\u2014because afterwards, she said\u2014once I said the \u201ceight,\u201d\u2014like: \u201cWe\u2019re adopting eight siblings,\u201d\u2014she said, \u201cI could see your mouth moving, but I have absolutely <em>no<\/em> idea what you said the rest of the time.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, in John 14, Jesus said, \u201cI will not leave you as orphans.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s His statement about us He was making to the disciples, speaking that He was not going to abandon us\u2014but He was going to ransom His life to adopt us if we trust in Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; we\u2019re talking to a couple who know that full well. They\u2019ve written a book called <em>At Any Cost: Overcoming Every Obstacle to Bring Our Children Home<\/em>. Mike and Hayley Jones are our guests today. We\u2019ve got copies of their book at FamilyLifeToday.com if you\u2019re interested in finding out more about the eight children that they adopted to go along with their, now, three biological children to make a family of 11, living outside of Nashville, Tennessee. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me go back to what Dennis asked you earlier\u2014the first time you were, face to face, with the eight Jones children\u2014who were not yet Jones children but had been ordained to be Jones children from before the foundation of the earth; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; I flew over to Sierra Leone. The flight arrived very late at night; so I didn\u2019t get to see the children that night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re by yourself?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I was\u2014well, I was with a team of about ten other ladies. We were staying at a house that was just two doors down from where the orphanage was at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were staying there. I could not sleep at all \/ I was just so excited\u2014trying\u2014you know, I had these pictures, and I was imagining them; but I was so ready\u2014I just wanted to see them \/ to touch them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe next morning, bright and early, we all got ready and started walking to the next driveway. The kids\u2014they do a great big celebration at the orphanage anytime people come. They had lined up down the long driveway, and they sing a couple of different songs. We can hear all the little voices, and two of my younger children were right up front. So, I saw them, just first thing; and they came running up to me\u2014they\u2019re singing. It was a surreal \/ absolutely surreal moment as we\u2019re walking up the driveway. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when we get up into the orphanage, they have chairs lined up for all the guests to sit. That\u2019s when I finally saw our oldest. He was one that I was kind of really\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I was a little nervous about. He was the oldest \/ he had been the father figure. I don\u2019t know\u2014I didn\u2019t have a child that old \/ I wasn\u2019t sure. I was kind of nervous about that relationship\u2014would he be accepting to me?\u00a0 It was kind of a nerve-wracking moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How old was he?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>He was 12 at the time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>A father figure\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014at 12. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. So, we get up there, and all the guests are lined up in front. I see him, and we made eye contact. I don\u2019t know how else to describe that moment, but just\u2014it was like love just came down. [Emotion in voice] All those, over a decade-long, lost memories that I had with him\u2014God just flooded me just with this pure love. I knew, right then, that it was just kind of another God-nod along the way. That just sealed the deal\u2014that: \u201cI don\u2019t care what I have to go through. These kids are ours, and I will fight for it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had no idea in that moment the fight that you were going to be in for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>None. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How many trips?\u2014how many months in Sierra Leone?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>It was about ten trips; but during those trips, I would stay\u2014it varied two, three, four months, at a time, just trying to work with the government there to get things moving and get things done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This was a three-year process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said, even to the day before, you had no idea that you were on the verge of a breakthrough. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. No; it was\u2014even up to the point of getting visas, our counselor was saying: \u201cYes; you\u2019ll have the visas. Come pick them up this day.\u201d\u00a0 Other people in the embassy: \u201cNo; no one is leaving.\u201d\u00a0 It was just\u2014it was this whirlwind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What about the danger in the country?\u00a0 Did you feel like you were ever in danger?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Hayley: <\/strong>The first time I landed in Sierra Leone\u2014my first visit there\u2014I just felt a peace there. There is something about that land, something about those people, and something about that country that I <em>love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love the simple way of life. It\u2019s not easy\u2014I mean, there\u2019s no running water \/ there\u2019s no electricity. You hand wash all your clothes. You have to go fetch your water and carry it with buckets on your head. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>If you have $5; and I needed the $5, you would give it to me\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; you wouldn\u2019t think anything about it\u2014you\u2019d just give it. They take care of each other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>\u2014and you have nothing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>\u2014in a way. You know, when you need $5, somebody is going to give it to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I ask that question, because we\u2019re talking about overcoming the obstacles\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014to get those children back to America, in your home. Just going there\u2014for a lot of people\u2014is a big deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>And I would always travel by myself. Mike and I never travelled together, because one of us had to be at home with the other children; but God kept me safe. There were definitely safety precautions and things that you had to take, and I can\u2019t be out at night. I can\u2019t carry a purse that\u2019s visible for people to see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you know, things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But when I was there, I had such a purpose. I knew every time, when I was in that country, that I was supposed be when I was supposed to be there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mike, tell me about the phone call you got from Hayley, when she said: \u201cIt\u2019s done. We\u2019re coming home.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>It was just joyful. I mean, knowing what God had told us, all along, was coming to fruition\u2014I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This had been a three-year journey; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And so, to get that phone call\u2014kind of out of the blue\u2014it wasn\u2019t like she said, \u201cMaybe, tomorrow or, maybe, next week.\u201d\u00a0 She just calls and says: \u201cIt happened. We\u2019re coming\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Well, leading up to that, it took about two-and-a-half years to get our court order. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>Another six to eight months to get the visas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>And another six to eight months to get the visas. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAfter we had our court order, I was working with the U.S. Embassy, trying to get visas; but I sat down, one day, at the dining room table. I said: \u201cGod, I need You to give me a word. I feel lost here. We\u2019ve got the adoption court order. I have <em>no<\/em> idea when the kids are coming home, and I need some reassurance.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI opened up my Bible, and it went to 2 Kings 19:25\u2014it says: \u201cHave you not heard long ago I ordained it?\u00a0 In days of old, I planned it. Now, I have brought it to pass.\u201d\u00a0 That day, I felt such a peace; and I called Mike\u2014I said: \u201cWe don\u2019t have the visa appointment yet. We don\u2019t have permission to leave with the kids, but I think I need to call and buy plane tickets. I think they are coming home.\u201d\u00a0 Literally, I called the airline; and we booked all the plane tickets\u2014we had no visas \/ we had nothing yet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>How did you pay for that many tickets?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>We did some fundraising for the plane tickets. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And these are kids, who have never been near an airplane, much less\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014ridden on one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, take us to the airport in America. I\u2019d love to know more about the ride\u2014I mean, that had to be <em>one<\/em> fascinating\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I will say it was the first time, obviously, they had ever seen a plane. Walking up those steps into the airplane, it was like going up the ladder into heaven. It was just\u2014it was such an excitement and such a relief. I will say one of the biggest lessons I think we learned in the three-year journey\u2014and kind of the biggest blessing was\u2014it gave us time to become a family. I lived over there. We were Mom and Dad <em>long<\/em> before they came home. So, they were <em>ready<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had prayed for this moment as well \/ they had dreamed of this moment as well. So, it made this excitement for them; and they got to see how God works through problems. Sometimes, things aren\u2019t always easy; but they got to learn to depend on God through this process too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re at the Nashville airport with, I imagine, a lot of your church family around you \/ a lot of your biological family around you. There had to be a welcome-home contingency as big as anything Nashville\u2019s ever seen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>We probably had a couple hundred people there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Television?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike and Hayley: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sure. So, what was it like, Dad?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> It was surreal, holding my daughter\u2019s hand, and walking my kids up to meet and greet everybody. It was just\u2014it was a proud moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Your sedan had been traded in, long ago, for something that holds a few more passengers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike: <\/strong>Yes; we got a fifteen-passenger van. They had always wanted new names when they came home. And for years, God had just been\u2014He had taken care of them. We wanted each of their names to reflect that; so they each have a biblical name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, there are times all through Scripture, where names get changed. It\u2019s a significant moment that marks the difference between an old life and a new life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what you were doing; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly what I explained to them\u2014I said: \u201cWe\u2019re <em>all<\/em> adopted children of God. God adopted us all.\u201d\u00a0 And I said: \u201cYou all have a birth name, and that\u2019s your past\u2014that\u2019s part of who you are\u2014but now, we get to have a new beginning and start something new. We don\u2019t <em>lose<\/em> or forget the past, but we get to add on and make something new with our future.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, tell how you got the first one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>Okay; so our oldest one, we named Michael. Of course, we all know that is an angel warrior\u2014so that is where his name came from. It\u2019s also Mike\u2019s name\u2014he gets to share that name with his dad. Michael is our oldest\u2014our kind of angel warrior \/ the leader. Samuel means \u201cGod heard.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, he\u2019s prayed for; and God answered our prayers. Gabrielle is the feminine form of Gabriel\u2014it means \u201cWoman of God.\u201d\u00a0 Levi means \u201cPledged or joined\u201d; and he joined our family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMalachi means \u201cMessenger of God,\u201d and that kid knows more Scripture than anybody I know and quotes it all the time. He is definitely a messenger of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I notice that you\u2019re reading this out of your book\u2014so just to give heart to parents who can\u2019t remember their kids\u2019 names. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley: <\/strong>I\u2019m making sure I get the <em>meaning<\/em> right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know.
