Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and her husband Robert celebrate one year of marriage together this weekend. We\u2019re going to look back on their first year today and see what they\u2019ve learned along the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition. I don\u2019t think this has ever happened\u2014where we\u2019ve had a couple in the studio, who we should identify as newlyweds \/ they\u2019re just about to celebrate their first anniversary\u2014and as soon as they sat down, they pulled out a bottle of Tabasco sauce and put it between them. I\u2019m not exactly sure what that means. Maybe you can get them to explain that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m looking over at it. It\u2019s a little, bitty bottle of Tabasco\u2014bottle of Tabasco sauce. I know we\u2019ve been instructed, Bob, to ask the husband of the two\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to explain this to us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why don\u2019t you introduce them to our listeners, and then we\u2019ll go hear the story about the Tabasco sauce.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, our listeners will recognize\u2014because both of these individuals have been on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014separately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014separately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRobert Wolgemuth joins us, along with his wife, Nancy. Robert, you\u2019ve been here many times\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014when you were married to your wife, Bobbie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were married to her for 44 years before she went to be with the Lord.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nancy, you\u2019ve been with us several times. In fact, I think the first time we ever recorded with you, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, we were talking about singleness and did a series called <em>Singled out for Him<\/em>; because that was the call of God on your life. You thought that was going to be the call of God on your life for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I asked Nancy one of the greatest questions I\u2019ve ever asked <em>anyone<\/em>, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I said, \u201cNancy, do you flirt?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you flinched a little bit when he asked. You were not exactly sure\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She squirmed \/ she squirmed; but she said: \u201cNope. Don\u2019t flirt.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, before we get to the Tabasco sauce, I want to know: \u201cDid you end up flirting with Robert as you dated?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>What a question!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>It depends what you mean by flirt. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes! It depends on what the word means! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>You know what? What we did was\u2014we were serious about not toying with each other\u2019s emotions and about not creating desires that could not be rightly fulfilled at that point. So we didn\u2019t go further in the relationship than what we knew was appropriate for the relationship. I didn\u2019t tell him that I loved him until the day we got engaged. I said, \u201cI don\u2019t want to say that until I\u2019m ready to say, \u2018Yes; I\u2019ll marry you.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we had fun\u2014we enjoyed each other \/ we opened our hearts to each other. Now, here\u2019s the woman \/ a single woman\u2014I had had mile-high hedges in my life between me and married men <em>forever<\/em>. It was a little bit of a challenge letting those come down gradually. We didn\u2019t want to say or do anything in our relationship that, if the Lord didn\u2019t lead us to marriage, we could have any regrets about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The first time you and Robert spent time together, while you were dating\u2014this was after you had said to her, \u201cCould we be friends?\u201d\u2014you [Nancy] went and spent a week in the city where you were living, Robert. You spent time together during the day \/ during the evening. You got some coaching, ahead of time, from some of your girlfriends about: \u201cWhat do I do if he wants to hold hands? What do I do if he wants to hug?\u201d right? Do you remember that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>That sounds pretty silly, probably, by modern standards; but we wanted to be appropriate and careful. There are a lot of women who read what I write and follow what I say, and I wanted to live with integrity the message that we\u2019re challenging women to have about purity. Again, I didn\u2019t want to lead him on\u2014I didn\u2019t want to communicate that I was further down the road than what we were at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, some may hear this as extreme; but I think this culture needs some who have built some hedges.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Let me tell you what\u2014when you do it that way, once you get to the altar, it\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; there are no regrets\u2014no regrets.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Not only no regrets, but there is <em>incredible<\/em> freedom and joy. That\u2019s what we experienced.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. Alright; I want to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Which brings us to the Tabasco sauce; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to get to the Tabasco sauce. [Laughter] So, Robert, what\u2019s with the bottle of Tabasco?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>This is a little, tiny bottle\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014this is probably an inch-and-a-half tall. We were somewhere, Honey; and we got room service\u2014breakfast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014after we were married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>\u2014after we married. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Does anybody think, after what she just said, the other\u2014I mean, seriously! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>We were married, and we got room service for breakfast. I think Nancy ordered scrambled eggs or something. They brought this little, tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce. You can picture this\u2014it has a green top and red at the bottom. We actually had breakfast a few mornings in a row; so we collected some of these little guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t remember exactly who went first\u2014but one of us maybe put it on our pillow \/ on the other person\u2019s pillow\u2014and said, \u201cYou are really hot!\u201d I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; hold on. Who did it first? Now, come on, Robert!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>That\u2019s the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>But we\u2019ve both done it a lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>So, when I leave on a business trip, and I unpack my suitcase in the hotel room, I pull out a pair of shoes out; and there\u2019s something rattling in it. In the toe is a little bottle of Tabasco sauce. This is part of the joy\u2014the play, back and forth\u2014of loving each other well and making sure that we\u2019re laughing. In fact, these good friends you just mentioned\u2014when I had my first interview with them\u2014this is eight women that Nancy\u2019s very close to\u2014I was on a Skype call. We talked for almost two hours.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is like a gauntlet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>It is a gauntlet. Man, it is not asking her daddy\u2014it\u2019s asking a <em>convention<\/em> if it\u2019s okay. [Laughter] I said to them: \u201cIf Nancy and I would get married, I would want to bring her joy. That would be one of the <em>happiest<\/em> things I could possibly do\u2014is bring her joy.\u201d So we laugh. I love her laugh; every time she laughs, I say, \u201cI <em>love<\/em> your laugh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is part of the fun \/ this is part of the joy\u2014this little, tiny Tabasco\u2014in fact, Nancy pulled this out and put it on the table, right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know that she was going to do that. It\u2019s part of the fun and just the interplay between husband and wife\u2014who know each other intimately, in every way imaginable. You say: \u201cYou know what?\u2014bottom line is, \u2018You are really hot!\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, where are you going to go on your first anniversary, Robert?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>We\u2019re not telling!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>No; no. This is our secret. It\u2019s none of your business. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know how many years I\u2019ve been doing this? We\u2019ve done over 5,000 broadcasts. You know how many guests have said that to me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I hope none. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You like to be the first!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I\u2019m happy to be the first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You <em>are<\/em> the first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well then, take us into the past year\u2014over the past 12 months\u2014and give us <em>one<\/em> of your favorite moments. Nancy, I\u2019m coming to <em>you<\/em> next. It can be simple\u2014doesn\u2019t have to be a high-flying moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can be something where you just had that joy of two people who are following Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I know what it is. Nancy loves the sunset. Nancy has a deck on the back of her house that faces west, so we watch the sunset. The first time I visited this house, I think Nancy said something about the fact that it sure would be nice if it [the deck] were bigger. So\u2014I\u2019m a hopeless builder\u2014I love a miter saw, chop saw, drills. I have expanded that deck about twice its size. The first night it was finished, we sat out on the deck and watched the sun go down, holding each other\u2014beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>One of the sweet things, after years of ministering as a single woman, is to now come home from a conference, or a day of recording, or a long, hard meeting, and to have someone there who loves me like crazy and wants to hear about my day, and how it\u2019s gone, and somebody to process things with. That has been very sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if I could say <em>a<\/em> moment\u2014I said that Robert gets up earlier\u2014way earlier\u2014than I do. The first time that I came downstairs and saw him still in his time at the throne, as he calls it\u2014on his knees at an ottoman, praying\u2014there was something in my heart that just went: \u201cWow. This is really special.\u201d Now, I knew he did that; but I had never just happened onto seeing him that way. I can tell you\u2014for a woman, when you know that your husband knows he needs God and when you know he\u2019s seeking God, there\u2019s something that inspires confidence, and security, trust, in knowing, \u201cI can trust this man to lead our relationship and our marriage, because I know he doesn\u2019t think he can do it without God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want you both\u2014and I realize the question I\u2019m about to ask is a bit of a vulnerable question, because the witnesses are all alive on this one\u2014but it took me 35 years in this space, of ministering to marriages and families, to finally realize we had overlooked \/ substantially overlooked blended families. Now, out of all marriages being formed, 40 percent are forming a blended family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to know the most important lesson both of you have learned as you have established a blended family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>The newness for everybody else. When I first visited Nancy in southwest Michigan, her ministry people were very gracious to me. I could tell that they were somewhat resistant, not because they didn\u2019t know me or trust me, but this was so new to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did my best to be humble in that situation and to wait \/ to be patient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe contractor\u2014the man who had built her house\u2014and I were standing on the driveway. We were talking about some construction things. He got really close to me. He put his index finger on my chest and he tapped me, not too gently, and he said, \u201cDon\u2019t you dare break her heart!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And he just said, out loud, what a lot of other people were thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Yes; yes\u2014that\u2019s right. I can never lose sight of the fact that these people know Nancy better than I do\u2014they\u2019ve loved her longer than I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, you\u2019re speaking of a group of people almost as though they are family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>They are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Well, in the same ministry for 36 years\u2014they <em>are<\/em> family. So, it\u2019s blending his biological family and my ministry family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Here\u2019s the ideal\u2014I\u2019m not sure that the Lord would have directed us together if my biological family and her ministry family hadn\u2019t been supportive, at some level; because that\u2019s a battle that\u2019s going to get worse, not better, after you get married; because you\u2019re going to spend less time with them than you did before. We prayed about that, earnestly, \u201cLord Jesus, would You please help us to understand what our future looks like by way of speaking to these people, who love me and love Nancy, and see things we don\u2019t see.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>By God\u2019s grace, those doors opened\u2014not automatically \/ not quickly. My patience \/ my humility with Nancy\u2019s family and ministry team\u2014and Nancy\u2019s patience with my biological family, and her willingness to wait, her willingness to not force herself onto them, to stay in touch with them on a regular basis, to be interested in what they\u2019re interested in, to be open about her love for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, when we were first exposed to the blended family ministry of FamilyLife, the first thing I thought of was: \u201cThis is a smack on the forehead: \u2018What in the world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>\u201c\u2019Why isn\u2019t this kind of thing everywhere?\u2019\u201d because the struggles that you face in a blended family are <em>so<\/em> different than when you get married in your early 20s. It\u2019s unbelievable. It\u2019s like the difference between playing before a stadium of a game or something. You have all these people watching versus just something you do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014playing in the back yard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; exactly right. So that was a <em>very<\/em> important part. We will tell everybody, who has ears to hear, how critical that was in our early relationship, when we realized this could be a husband-and-wife kind of deal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to those who\u2019ve already tied the knot, and didn\u2019t do that, the same prayer you guys had, in advance, of that decision for your blended family and Nancy\u2019s ministry family, those same prayers God hears.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019d begin to pray God would cement hearts, melt hearts, bring hearts together so that it\u2019s not an ongoing battle, for a lifetime, for a couple.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>We still pray those prayers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not because things are awful, but it\u2019s that you have human beings here. There\u2019s change for <em>everyone<\/em> involved and expectations that you have to get to the surface and deal with. If you can get to where you\u2019re not just concerned about yourself; but you can listen to the hearts of others and hear: \u201cWhat are their concerns? What are <em>they<\/em> experiencing, and how can we be sensitive to that? How can we care about that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just tighten up and say, \u201cIt\u2019s all about us,\u201d and forget what they think, then you\u2019re going to have a lifetime of conflict. But if you walk the way\u2014you can never go wrong on the pathway of humility, and patience, and love\u2014and realize that the way it is right now is not the way it will always be \/ that if you give it time, and tenderness, and cultivating the soil of those relationships, that they will grow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>When I was a little boy, I made Revell kits\u2014remember those?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Little models.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Plastic kits\u2014models with the glue and stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Mine was on the kitchen table\u2014always on the kitchen table with newspaper spread out. My daddy walked through the kitchen \/ walked up behind me, and he saw me taking two pieces and trying to make them work. He saw my hands tremble, because I was pushing them together. He leaned over my shoulder and he said: \u201cRobert. Don\u2019t force it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the message here: \u201cGive people time. It\u2019s going to take time! Don\u2019t force it. Wait, be patient, pray for them, pray with them. Talk to each other\u2014your spouse \/ your mate\u2014talk about the struggles that you\u2019re facing in your own family, in facing all this. Don\u2019t let stuff simmer, but don\u2019t force it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have to ask both of you an anniversary question. This is a big question for husbands and wives to ask each other on their anniversary: \u201cWhat\u2019s one thing you want to do differently in Year Two of your marriage than you did in Year One?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis talks about not repeating rookie mistakes in the second year. As you go into the next year of your marriage, what\u2019s something you\u2019d like to do better, differently, make an adjustment?\u2014some way you\u2019d like to love one another better than you did in the first year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>We\u2019re both really busy. We have full, full schedules. In this first year, we have spent very little time doing nothing together. We\u2019ve had days\u2014maybe a weekend here or there\u2014Sunday \/ almost <em>all<\/em> Sundays are pretty sacred to us. But I mean, get away and just rest. Now, we may tell everybody that we\u2019re going away and stay home. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And we\u2019re both home-bodies; so we enjoy that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>We are; yes. Suitcases really aren\u2019t a big deal for us\u2014we\u2019re not fans of that. But that\u2019s what I would say, looking back on that. We knew this, going in\u2014Nancy said to me, early in our dating relationship, \u201cI want you to know I\u2019m a very complex person.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Was I right; Honey?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Yes; you were, Honey. [Laughter] I am too; but you are\u2014you\u2019re more so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I want\u2014I want a little bit more time \/ a little bit more margin. This is the woman, who\u2019s the CEO of a growing ministry, who writes books, who does a daily radio broadcast, and has these huge conferences with women. All these things take a <em>lot<\/em> of time. I\u2019m eager for that\u2014I think she is too; aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And I want to say how grateful I am that you have <em>embraced<\/em> that ministry. You love it, and we\u2019re in similar kinds of work\u2014so we enjoy each other\u2019s work. It\u2019s not like our careers don\u2019t intersect at all; they do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut really, the same thing crossed my mind when Bob asked that question\u2014is, \u201cHow could we structure our days and our work life\u201d\u2014and we\u2019re working on this consistently\/\u00a0 it\u2019s a bit of a moving target\u2014\u201cto be able to have more margin to cultivate our relationship?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not like we don\u2019t have time together; we do. Again, because we\u2019re in a season where there aren\u2019t children involved, that helps. For families that have children come quickly, I think that\u2019s really a great challenge\u2014but I would share that desire.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s been fun to talk to you all. I just was thinking, \u201cYou know, what you two are demonstrating is found in the book of Romans, Chapter 12, verses 1-3.\u201d Anybody who knows that chapter knows that verses 1 and 2 kind of talks about settling the matter with God\u2014we\u2019re to be a living sacrifice \/ we are to not be conformed to the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat follows verses 1 and 2 of Romans 12 talks about each person should think rightly about himself or herself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce you\u2019ve settled the issue of ownership\u2014that you are a bondslave of Jesus, you are surrendered to Him, and that you\u2019re laying there on the altar, having given yourself to Him\u2014the next assignment is to daily decide you\u2019re going to think about your own life \/ your own rights as God would have you in light of who He is. You know, when you think of who God is, it\u2019s not difficult to rightly evaluate who you are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys do that. I think the success of your early months of your marriage, over the past 12 months, I think is because you had a lifetime\u2014both of you\u2014of having done that prior to getting married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And if I could just say one more thing along that line\u2014is that we\u2019re older, and we realize that we\u2019re not going to have 50 years to be married to each other. We don\u2019t want to waste days, or hours, or time being angry at each \/ being hostile toward each other. And our marriage, more than being about us, is about telling the story of Jesus\u2019 love for His church and the church\u2019s love for Christ and her respect and reverence for Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re saying: \u201cLook; this isn\u2019t just about us having a happy marriage. It\u2019s about \u2018How well are we telling that story to a world that <em>desperately<\/em> needs to see the gospel lived out?\u2019\u201d That helps us deal with these things that could otherwise really pull us down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s do this again on another anniversary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Shall we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s try it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Thank you guys for coming down here and being with us\u2014also, for back last July, when FamilyLife celebrated its 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary. We\u2019re going to look back on their first year today and see what they\u2019ve learned along the way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Friday edition. I don\u2019t think this has ever happened\u2014where we\u2019ve had a couple in the studio, who we should identify as newlyweds \/ they\u2019re just about to celebrate their first anniversary\u2014and as soon as they sat down, they pulled out a bottle of Tabasco sauce and put it between them. I\u2019m not exactly sure what that means. Maybe you can get them to explain that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m looking over at it. It\u2019s a little, bitty bottle of Tabasco\u2014bottle of Tabasco sauce. I know we\u2019ve been instructed, Bob, to ask the husband of the two\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014to explain this to us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why don\u2019t you introduce them to our listeners, and then we\u2019ll go hear the story about the Tabasco sauce.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, our listeners will recognize\u2014because both of these individuals have been on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014separately.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014separately. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRobert Wolgemuth joins us, along with his wife, Nancy. Robert, you\u2019ve been here many times\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014when you were married to your wife, Bobbie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were married to her for 44 years before she went to be with the Lord.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nancy, you\u2019ve been with us several times. In fact, I think the first time we ever recorded with you, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, we were talking about singleness and did a series called <em>Singled out for Him<\/em>; because that was the call of God on your life. You thought that was going to be the call of God on your life for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I asked Nancy one of the greatest questions I\u2019ve ever asked <em>anyone<\/em>, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I said, \u201cNancy, do you flirt?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you flinched a little bit when he asked. You were not exactly sure\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She squirmed \/ she squirmed; but she said: \u201cNope. Don\u2019t flirt.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, before we get to the Tabasco sauce, I want to know: \u201cDid you end up flirting with Robert as you dated?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>What a question!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>It depends what you mean by flirt. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes! It depends on what the word means! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>You know what? What we did was\u2014we were serious about not toying with each other\u2019s emotions and about not creating desires that could not be rightly fulfilled at that point. So we didn\u2019t go further in the relationship than what we knew was appropriate for the relationship. I didn\u2019t tell him that I loved him until the day we got engaged. I said, \u201cI don\u2019t want to say that until I\u2019m ready to say, \u2018Yes; I\u2019ll marry you.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we had fun\u2014we enjoyed each other \/ we opened our hearts to each other. Now, here\u2019s the woman \/ a single woman\u2014I had had mile-high hedges in my life between me and married men <em>forever<\/em>. It was a little bit of a challenge letting those come down gradually. We didn\u2019t want to say or do anything in our relationship that, if the Lord didn\u2019t lead us to marriage, we could have any regrets about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The first time you and Robert spent time together, while you were dating\u2014this was after you had said to her, \u201cCould we be friends?\u201d\u2014you [Nancy] went and spent a week in the city where you were living, Robert. You spent time together during the day \/ during the evening. You got some coaching, ahead of time, from some of your girlfriends about: \u201cWhat do I do if he wants to hold hands? What do I do if he wants to hug?\u201d right? Do you remember that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>That sounds pretty silly, probably, by modern standards; but we wanted to be appropriate and careful. There are a lot of women who read what I write and follow what I say, and I wanted to live with integrity the message that we\u2019re challenging women to have about purity. Again, I didn\u2019t want to lead him on\u2014I didn\u2019t want to communicate that I was further down the road than what we were at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, some may hear this as extreme; but I think this culture needs some who have built some hedges.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Let me tell you what\u2014when you do it that way, once you get to the altar, it\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; there are no regrets\u2014no regrets.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Not only no regrets, but there is <em>incredible<\/em> freedom and joy. That\u2019s what we experienced.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. Alright; I want to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Which brings us to the Tabasco sauce; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to get to the Tabasco sauce. [Laughter] So, Robert, what\u2019s with the bottle of Tabasco?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>This is a little, tiny bottle\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014this is probably an inch-and-a-half tall. We were somewhere, Honey; and we got room service\u2014breakfast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>\u2014after we were married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>\u2014after we married. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Does anybody think, after what she just said, the other\u2014I mean, seriously! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>We were married, and we got room service for breakfast. I think Nancy ordered scrambled eggs or something. They brought this little, tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce. You can picture this\u2014it has a green top and red at the bottom. We actually had breakfast a few mornings in a row; so we collected some of these little guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t remember exactly who went first\u2014but one of us maybe put it on our pillow \/ on the other person\u2019s pillow\u2014and said, \u201cYou are really hot!\u201d I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; hold on. Who did it first? Now, come on, Robert!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>I don\u2019t remember. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>That\u2019s the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>But we\u2019ve both done it a lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>So, when I leave on a business trip, and I unpack my suitcase in the hotel room, I pull out a pair of shoes out; and there\u2019s something rattling in it. In the toe is a little bottle of Tabasco sauce. This is part of the joy\u2014the play, back and forth\u2014of loving each other well and making sure that we\u2019re laughing. In fact, these good friends you just mentioned\u2014when I had my first interview with them\u2014this is eight women that Nancy\u2019s very close to\u2014I was on a Skype call. We talked for almost two hours.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is like a gauntlet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>It is a gauntlet. Man, it is not asking her daddy\u2014it\u2019s asking a <em>convention<\/em> if it\u2019s okay. [Laughter] I said to them: \u201cIf Nancy and I would get married, I would want to bring her joy. That would be one of the <em>happiest<\/em> things I could possibly do\u2014is bring her joy.\u201d So we laugh. I love her laugh; every time she laughs, I say, \u201cI <em>love<\/em> your laugh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is part of the fun \/ this is part of the joy\u2014this little, tiny Tabasco\u2014in fact, Nancy pulled this out and put it on the table, right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know that she was going to do that. It\u2019s part of the fun and just the interplay between husband and wife\u2014who know each other intimately, in every way imaginable. You say: \u201cYou know what?\u2014bottom line is, \u2018You are really hot!\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, where are you going to go on your first anniversary, Robert?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>We\u2019re not telling!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>No; no. This is our secret. It\u2019s none of your business. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know how many years I\u2019ve been doing this? We\u2019ve done over 5,000 broadcasts. You know how many guests have said that to me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I hope none. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You like to be the first!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I\u2019m happy to be the first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You <em>are<\/em> the first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well then, take us into the past year\u2014over the past 12 months\u2014and give us <em>one<\/em> of your favorite moments. Nancy, I\u2019m coming to <em>you<\/em> next. It can be simple\u2014doesn\u2019t have to be a high-flying moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can be something where you just had that joy of two people who are following Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>I know what it is. Nancy loves the sunset. Nancy has a deck on the back of her house that faces west, so we watch the sunset. The first time I visited this house, I think Nancy said something about the fact that it sure would be nice if it [the deck] were bigger. So\u2014I\u2019m a hopeless builder\u2014I love a miter saw, chop saw, drills. I have expanded that deck about twice its size. The first night it was finished, we sat out on the deck and watched the sun go down, holding each other\u2014beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>One of the sweet things, after years of ministering as a single woman, is to now come home from a conference, or a day of recording, or a long, hard meeting, and to have someone there who loves me like crazy and wants to hear about my day, and how it\u2019s gone, and somebody to process things with. That has been very sweet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if I could say <em>a<\/em> moment\u2014I said that Robert gets up earlier\u2014way earlier\u2014than I do. The first time that I came downstairs and saw him still in his time at the throne, as he calls it\u2014on his knees at an ottoman, praying\u2014there was something in my heart that just went: \u201cWow. This is really special.\u201d Now, I knew he did that; but I had never just happened onto seeing him that way. I can tell you\u2014for a woman, when you know that your husband knows he needs God and when you know he\u2019s seeking God, there\u2019s something that inspires confidence, and security, trust, in knowing, \u201cI can trust this man to lead our relationship and our marriage, because I know he doesn\u2019t think he can do it without God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want you both\u2014and I realize the question I\u2019m about to ask is a bit of a vulnerable question, because the witnesses are all alive on this one\u2014but it took me 35 years in this space, of ministering to marriages and families, to finally realize we had overlooked \/ substantially overlooked blended families. Now, out of all marriages being formed, 40 percent are forming a blended family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to know the most important lesson both of you have learned as you have established a blended family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>The newness for everybody else. When I first visited Nancy in southwest Michigan, her ministry people were very gracious to me. I could tell that they were somewhat resistant, not because they didn\u2019t know me or trust me, but this was so new to them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did my best to be humble in that situation and to wait \/ to be patient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe contractor\u2014the man who had built her house\u2014and I were standing on the driveway. We were talking about some construction things. He got really close to me. He put his index finger on my chest and he tapped me, not too gently, and he said, \u201cDon\u2019t you dare break her heart!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And he just said, out loud, what a lot of other people were thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Yes; yes\u2014that\u2019s right. I can never lose sight of the fact that these people know Nancy better than I do\u2014they\u2019ve loved her longer than I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Now, you\u2019re speaking of a group of people almost as though they are family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>They are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Well, in the same ministry for 36 years\u2014they <em>are<\/em> family. So, it\u2019s blending his biological family and my ministry family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Here\u2019s the ideal\u2014I\u2019m not sure that the Lord would have directed us together if my biological family and her ministry family hadn\u2019t been supportive, at some level; because that\u2019s a battle that\u2019s going to get worse, not better, after you get married; because you\u2019re going to spend less time with them than you did before. We prayed about that, earnestly, \u201cLord Jesus, would You please help us to understand what our future looks like by way of speaking to these people, who love me and love Nancy, and see things we don\u2019t see.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>By God\u2019s grace, those doors opened\u2014not automatically \/ not quickly. My patience \/ my humility with Nancy\u2019s family and ministry team\u2014and Nancy\u2019s patience with my biological family, and her willingness to wait, her willingness to not force herself onto them, to stay in touch with them on a regular basis, to be interested in what they\u2019re interested in, to be open about her love for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, when we were first exposed to the blended family ministry of FamilyLife, the first thing I thought of was: \u201cThis is a smack on the forehead: \u2018What in the world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>\u201c\u2019Why isn\u2019t this kind of thing everywhere?\u2019\u201d because the struggles that you face in a blended family are <em>so<\/em> different than when you get married in your early 20s. It\u2019s unbelievable. It\u2019s like the difference between playing before a stadium of a game or something. You have all these people watching versus just something you do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014playing in the back yard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; exactly right. So that was a <em>very<\/em> important part. We will tell everybody, who has ears to hear, how critical that was in our early relationship, when we realized this could be a husband-and-wife kind of deal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to those who\u2019ve already tied the knot, and didn\u2019t do that, the same prayer you guys had, in advance, of that decision for your blended family and Nancy\u2019s ministry family, those same prayers God hears.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019d begin to pray God would cement hearts, melt hearts, bring hearts together so that it\u2019s not an ongoing battle, for a lifetime, for a couple.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>We still pray those prayers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And it\u2019s not because things are awful, but it\u2019s that you have human beings here. There\u2019s change for <em>everyone<\/em> involved and expectations that you have to get to the surface and deal with. If you can get to where you\u2019re not just concerned about yourself; but you can listen to the hearts of others and hear: \u201cWhat are their concerns? What are <em>they<\/em> experiencing, and how can we be sensitive to that? How can we care about that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just tighten up and say, \u201cIt\u2019s all about us,\u201d and forget what they think, then you\u2019re going to have a lifetime of conflict. But if you walk the way\u2014you can never go wrong on the pathway of humility, and patience, and love\u2014and realize that the way it is right now is not the way it will always be \/ that if you give it time, and tenderness, and cultivating the soil of those relationships, that they will grow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>When I was a little boy, I made Revell kits\u2014remember those?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Little models.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Plastic kits\u2014models with the glue and stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Mine was on the kitchen table\u2014always on the kitchen table with newspaper spread out. My daddy walked through the kitchen \/ walked up behind me, and he saw me taking two pieces and trying to make them work. He saw my hands tremble, because I was pushing them together. He leaned over my shoulder and he said: \u201cRobert. Don\u2019t force it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the message here: \u201cGive people time. It\u2019s going to take time! Don\u2019t force it. Wait, be patient, pray for them, pray with them. Talk to each other\u2014your spouse \/ your mate\u2014talk about the struggles that you\u2019re facing in your own family, in facing all this. Don\u2019t let stuff simmer, but don\u2019t force it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I have to ask both of you an anniversary question. This is a big question for husbands and wives to ask each other on their anniversary: \u201cWhat\u2019s one thing you want to do differently in Year Two of your marriage than you did in Year One?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis talks about not repeating rookie mistakes in the second year. As you go into the next year of your marriage, what\u2019s something you\u2019d like to do better, differently, make an adjustment?\u2014some way you\u2019d like to love one another better than you did in the first year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>We\u2019re both really busy. We have full, full schedules. In this first year, we have spent very little time doing nothing together. We\u2019ve had days\u2014maybe a weekend here or there\u2014Sunday \/ almost <em>all<\/em> Sundays are pretty sacred to us. But I mean, get away and just rest. Now, we may tell everybody that we\u2019re going away and stay home. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And we\u2019re both home-bodies; so we enjoy that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>We are; yes. Suitcases really aren\u2019t a big deal for us\u2014we\u2019re not fans of that. But that\u2019s what I would say, looking back on that. We knew this, going in\u2014Nancy said to me, early in our dating relationship, \u201cI want you to know I\u2019m a very complex person.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Was I right; Honey?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Yes; you were, Honey. [Laughter] I am too; but you are\u2014you\u2019re more so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I want\u2014I want a little bit more time \/ a little bit more margin. This is the woman, who\u2019s the CEO of a growing ministry, who writes books, who does a daily radio broadcast, and has these huge conferences with women. All these things take a <em>lot<\/em> of time. I\u2019m eager for that\u2014I think she is too; aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And I want to say how grateful I am that you have <em>embraced<\/em> that ministry. You love it, and we\u2019re in similar kinds of work\u2014so we enjoy each other\u2019s work. It\u2019s not like our careers don\u2019t intersect at all; they do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut really, the same thing crossed my mind when Bob asked that question\u2014is, \u201cHow could we structure our days and our work life\u201d\u2014and we\u2019re working on this consistently\/\u00a0 it\u2019s a bit of a moving target\u2014\u201cto be able to have more margin to cultivate our relationship?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not like we don\u2019t have time together; we do. Again, because we\u2019re in a season where there aren\u2019t children involved, that helps. For families that have children come quickly, I think that\u2019s really a great challenge\u2014but I would share that desire.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s been fun to talk to you all. I just was thinking, \u201cYou know, what you two are demonstrating is found in the book of Romans, Chapter 12, verses 1-3.\u201d Anybody who knows that chapter knows that verses 1 and 2 kind of talks about settling the matter with God\u2014we\u2019re to be a living sacrifice \/ we are to not be conformed to the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat follows verses 1 and 2 of Romans 12 talks about each person should think rightly about himself or herself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce you\u2019ve settled the issue of ownership\u2014that you are a bondslave of Jesus, you are surrendered to Him, and that you\u2019re laying there on the altar, having given yourself to Him\u2014the next assignment is to daily decide you\u2019re going to think about your own life \/ your own rights as God would have you in light of who He is. You know, when you think of who God is, it\u2019s not difficult to rightly evaluate who you are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys do that. I think the success of your early months of your marriage, over the past 12 months, I think is because you had a lifetime\u2014both of you\u2014of having done that prior to getting married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>And if I could just say one more thing along that line\u2014is that we\u2019re older, and we realize that we\u2019re not going to have 50 years to be married to each other. We don\u2019t want to waste days, or hours, or time being angry at each \/ being hostile toward each other. And our marriage, more than being about us, is about telling the story of Jesus\u2019 love for His church and the church\u2019s love for Christ and her respect and reverence for Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re saying: \u201cLook; this isn\u2019t just about us having a happy marriage. It\u2019s about \u2018How well are we telling that story to a world that <em>desperately<\/em> needs to see the gospel lived out?\u2019\u201d That helps us deal with these things that could otherwise really pull us down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s do this again on another anniversary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Shall we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let\u2019s try it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Thank you guys for coming down here and being with us\u2014also, for back last July, when FamilyLife celebrated its 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.
