In this case, it\u2019s the theme of God\u2019s goodness and our need to show gratitude and to be thankful. The more a home can direct our thinking in that direction, the more contentment there\u2019s going to be in the home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right. And we\u2019re creating an atmosphere when we do that \/ we\u2019re creating an ambience when we do that. When we give thanks and we elevate God\u2019s presence in our home, we make our home more welcoming. We open the door, in a sense, for God to be at work in our hearts. When we\u2019re not focusing on what He\u2019s doing, then we\u2019re closing the door to His work. So it\u2019s welcoming Him \/ it\u2019s making much of His presence in our home. It\u2019s teaching your kids \/ it\u2019s teaching one another. It\u2019s a great way to share the time together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So where will you and your husband be spending Thanksgiving Day this year?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, several months ago, at the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the FamilyLife celebration, my grandmother and my uncle very clearly told Josh and me, \u201cYou <em>will be <\/em>at the farm; <em>right<\/em>?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They did?! [Laughter] I missed that little piece.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> So, we will be at the farm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ll be with your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> <em>Our <\/em>family, at the farm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And as you prepare your husband to come to your family\u2019s Thanksgiving celebration \/ as you\u2019re driving there with him, and you say to him, \u201cNow, Josh, let me just tell you what you\u2019re walking into.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What will you tell him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> [Laughing] What are you going to say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> \u201cYou\u2019d better put me as all five things that you\u2019re thankful for! [Laughter] \u2018One, Laura; two, Laura; three, Laura\u2026\u201d [Laughter] Just kidding!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How will you prep him?\u2014because he probably has not had as intentional a Thanksgiving as he is about to celebrate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> No. I think I\u2019ll probably\u2014just like what we\u2019ve just talked about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014giving him a little bit of the history of our family, and how we\u2019ve done it over the years, and then also give him a little bit of a heads-up that \u201cYou need to have five things that you\u2019re thankful for\u2014to be able to write down and to share with the family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughing] And \u201cThey should all start with \u2018L\u2019\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> And \u201cThey should all start with \u2018L.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand end with \u2018A\u2019.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And will you say something like, \u201cNow you just need to know, my mom kind of goes way over the top when it comes to Thanksgiving\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> My mom does a <em>beautiful <\/em>job at Thanksgiving. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s how you\u2019re going to say it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> That\u2019s how I\u2019ll say it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That was very kind of you, since I\u2019m present in the room! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> You\u2019re right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> What else could she say? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> The Rainey family does not\u2014we do not do things halfway for holidays\u2014for meals \/ for gathering together. It is all very intentional. Thankfully, this past summer, he was with us at our beach vacation. He got a very small taste of the intentionality of our family\u2014 the level\u2014but the bar is raised at Thanksgiving. He\u2019s in for a treat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That beach vacation was where he proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; he did\u2014<em>magical<\/em>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So now he\u2019s about to be immersed in what is 30 years of family history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you think it will be a shock for him; or do you think it will be something that he will walk into and go, \u201cYou know, this feels right\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> He won\u2019t be shocked by it. I think he\u2019s always pleasantly surprised and enjoys that time. I think people <em>long<\/em> for conversation that\u2019s more meaningful than just the average\u2014you know, \u201cWhat did you do today?\u201d or \u201cHow was the game that you played in last night?\u201d We\u2019re looking for opportunities to have more intentional conversations. I think he\u2019ll appreciate it and welcome that. He is intentional with his conversations; but to have it, as a family, is, I think, welcomed and I think a special part of who we are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; I want you to think about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This will be the last question! [Laughter] This is my broadcast! She may think it\u2019s hers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> She\u2019s taking over\u2014she\u2019s taking over for him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to ask you about Thanksgiving at your home in 2042. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going 26 years into the future\u2014so Thanksgiving 2042. We\u2019ll assume that there might be one, or two, or three, or more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Nope! It\u2019s better to <em>stop<\/em> there! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; there might be some children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014who are now teenagers or older.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You are the one responsible for what your family\u2019s Thanksgiving is going to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, what will you carry with you, do you imagine, from what you grew up with? How will your Thanksgiving be similar and how will it be different; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, we will absolutely have the Company French Toast; but I think\u2014when I look into what I would love for our Thanksgivings to look like\u2014I would love for them to have that intentionality of conversation. It may not be to the same degree or to the same level, but I just remember how mom powered through every year: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe will read the story. This is our time. We are going to read this story.\u201d She didn\u2019t quit!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I think\u2014thinking through having my own kids, and what I want to teach them, and what I want to instill into their lives\u2014and teach them about being intentional, and having good conversations, and having people gathered around the table. I think that\u2019s what I would like to teach them and to instill into their lives, whether that\u2019s through a Thanksgiving conversation, or if it\u2019s every day when we have dinner together, or once a week because things get crazy\u2014that\u2019s something that I would want them to take away, regardless of the season\u2014but especially at Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ll check in in 26 years and see how it turns out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Sure! I\u2019m going to be running this broadcast!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; she will be, in fact. [Laughter] I just want to go on record that Laura is 220 volts. She <em>will<\/em> power through her Thanksgiving too. [Laughter] But, as I\u2019m listening to this, I couldn\u2019t help but think just how God rewarded Barbara\u2019s faithfulness to import some traditions around our Thanksgiving table. In fact, one of my favorite memories, if not my greatest, is when we ate out on the deck. Our adult children had us quarantined to the end of the table with all of the young grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So all of the adult children, who were down at the other end of the table, having a delightful, uninterrupted conversation\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Adult conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and Barbara and I are cleaning up spills \/ we\u2019re interacting\u2014[Laughter]\u2014which, we love grandkids and all; but we weren\u2019t a part of the adult conversation! We were kind of wanting to be with our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t remember the number; but it was 25 of us or so, out on the deck with numerous card tables set up, end to end, and then a couple of real tables at the other end. It was just a delight. It was a mess! I\u2019m glad it was outside\u2014we could hose it off after it was done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to ask both of you about the relational dynamic of the Thanksgiving meal; because when you\u2019re raising your kids, you\u2019re controlling that dynamic to a certain extent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re kind of deciding what the priorities are going to be, and you\u2019re directing what\u2019s going to go on that day. When your kids become adult kids, and families get together for an extended family Thanksgiving, as you\u2019re talking about doing here in a couple of weeks, there can be some drama that comes with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There can be some listeners who think: \u201cI used to love Thanksgiving; but <em>now<\/em>, it just feels like we\u2019re walking on eggshells with everybody. We know what topics not to bring up. Sure enough, somebody\u2019s going to say something that\u2019s going to hurt someone else\u2019s feelings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to have\u2014instead of a wonderful blessed Thanksgiving\u2014we\u2019re going to look at each other and go, \u2018Why does it always go south for us?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got three words for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And I have a word\u2014and that is, \u201cWe\u2019ve been there too.\u201d We\u2019ve had some Thanksgivings, where kids weren\u2019t excited about doing the story; they didn\u2019t want to write what they were thankful for; or they were just not doing well. They made it real clear that they weren\u2019t doing well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn those times\u2014what I\u2019ve noticed that we\u2019ve had to do, as our family has gotten older\u2014when our children were at home, as you said, we controlled the environment \/ we controlled the situation. They may have rolled their eyes \/ they may have complained; but we read the story and everyone wrote what they were thankful for. But now that they\u2019re married, and now that they have children, and they all gather together, we can\u2019t manage that \/ we can\u2019t control that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pick out <em>really<\/em> short portions of the story; and we read maybe three paragraphs if it\u2019s really crazy like the day we had Thanksgiving out on the deck. Sometimes, we read a little bit more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt helps now that our oldest grandkids are old enough that they can pick up the book and read it. So, in the last three or four years\u2014maybe five\u2014we\u2019ve had our grandkids read the story. That helps them pay attention, and the parents are real proud that their kids are reading. They are supportive because, you know, \u201cMy daughter\u201d or \u201cMy son is reading the book to everybody, and I\u2019m going to support that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know, it has changed and evolved. We\u2019re at a different place than we were when it was just us with our six at home, but it still works.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But here\u2019s more what I\u2019m thinking about\u2014I\u2019m thinking about this gathering including one adult child, who\u2019s making choices that mom and dad are heartbroken about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Another adult child, who\u2019s not getting along with a sibling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Another one; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Another adult child, who\u2019s coming here and, if the subject of politics comes, it\u2019s going to be a war, especially with what this year\u2019s election cycle has looked like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you just think: \u201cWell, it\u2019s no wonder that we talk about the weather and football; because if we get into anything that feels meaningful, we could have real drama on our hands. Everybody gets their feelings hurt, and everybody goes isolated to one corner of the house, and nobody talks to anybody anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But to me, that\u2019s even more reason to help everyone focus on gratitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you have the questions\u2014the ribbon questions that we were talking about earlier\u2014and you just help everyone say just one thing that they\u2019re grateful for\u2014even the kids that are not getting along can find something for which they\u2019re grateful, and they can share it\u2014even if it\u2019s just a word or two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What are you trying to say or do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picking up the \u201cUntie Your Story.\u201d I\u2019m thinking of how these 12 napkin ties, that have 12 different questions, can do the exact same thing you\u2019re talking about and direct the conversation\u2014and lift it out of, maybe, self-absorption, or being hurt, or being disappointed, or having a pity party. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the thing\u2014if you\u2019re waiting for the perfect moment for a family, you\u2019re going to be waiting a long time if you\u2019ve got very many family members.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Honestly, a family is a group of imperfect people. Just look at the families in the Bible! I mean, they\u2019re not painted with airbrush and with Photoshop<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> colors\u2014they\u2019re painted, warts and all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think we need to learn to accept\u2014I know that\u2019s hard for certain moms and dads, listening to this right now\u2014grandparents. They so want peace in their family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I get that\u2014I want it, too; but we just have to learn to settle for less, maybe, than what we wanted\u2014not correct everyone \/ not try to straighten it all out\u2014but allow God to take up residence \/ to show up there. Ask the family members some meaningful questions, and let them answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And I think, too, as the mom and dad\u2014or as the grandma and the grandpa who are hosting\u2014I think we have an opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we\u2019re griping and we\u2019re not doing well, and when we\u2019re not getting along with each other\u2014say Dennis and I aren\u2019t\u2014God doesn\u2019t stop loving us. He doesn\u2019t stop being intentional toward us. He doesn\u2019t go away. I think that creating an atmosphere that intentionally loves and turns people\u2019s hearts toward gratitude, which is what Thanksgiving is about, is a very good thing, even if you don\u2019t get the response that you long to get. We\u2019re still mimicking what God has called us to do, which is to be a thankful people. To me, that trumps everybody\u2019s bad attitudes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, here\u2019s where your napkin ribbons help with that; because the questions you\u2019re asking on the napkin ribbons\u2014that everybody can answer\u2014are going to direct the conversation in a direction that is going to be affirming\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s going to be positive \/ that\u2019s going to have people talking about positive things rather than bickering with one another. You can\u2019t control that, but you can steer things; and that\u2019s what you do with the napkin ribbons.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You steer things in a direction of thankfulness and gratitude rather than a direction of, \u201cWhat am I frustrated about?\u201d or \u201cWhat am I griping about today?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that\u2019s what she does in the book, <em>Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember<\/em>\u2014that directs families to write down on a card, \u201cLooking back over the past year, what are the five things you\u2019re most thankful for in 2016?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cLaura,\u201d \u201cLaura,\u201d \u201cLaura,\u201d \u201cLaura,\u201d \u201cLaura.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We know how Josh is going to answer the question!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just in case he\u2019s listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut those cards really do become a history of God\u2019s work in your family\u2019s life. I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014those cards today allow us to get a snapshot of a year\u2014and a summary\u2014in a way you don\u2019t forget. That\u2019s one of our problems, as a family\u2014we forget God\u2019s goodness. We forget to celebrate it. In this case, it\u2019s the theme of God\u2019s goodness and our need to show gratitude and to be thankful. When we\u2019re not focusing on what He\u2019s doing, then we\u2019re closing the door to His work. So it\u2019s welcoming Him \/ it\u2019s making much of His presence in our home. It\u2019s teaching your kids \/ it\u2019s teaching one another. [Laughter] \u2018One, Laura; two, Laura; three, Laura\u2026\u201d [Laughter] Just kidding!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How will you prep him?\u2014because he probably has not had as intentional a Thanksgiving as he is about to celebrate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> No. I think I\u2019ll probably\u2014just like what we\u2019ve just talked about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014giving him a little bit of the history of our family, and how we\u2019ve done it over the years, and then also give him a little bit of a heads-up that \u201cYou need to have five things that you\u2019re thankful for\u2014to be able to write down and to share with the family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughing] And \u201cThey should all start with \u2018L\u2019\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> And \u201cThey should all start with \u2018L.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand end with \u2018A\u2019.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And will you say something like, \u201cNow you just need to know, my mom kind of goes way over the top when it comes to Thanksgiving\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> My mom does a <em>beautiful <\/em>job at Thanksgiving. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s how you\u2019re going to say it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> That\u2019s how I\u2019ll say it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That was very kind of you, since I\u2019m present in the room! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> You\u2019re right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> What else could she say? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> The Rainey family does not\u2014we do not do things halfway for holidays\u2014for meals \/ for gathering together. It is all very intentional. Thankfully, this past summer, he was with us at our beach vacation. He got a very small taste of the intentionality of our family\u2014 the level\u2014but the bar is raised at Thanksgiving. He\u2019s in for a treat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That beach vacation was where he proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> That\u2019s right; he did\u2014<em>magical<\/em>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So now he\u2019s about to be immersed in what is 30 years of family history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you think it will be a shock for him; or do you think it will be something that he will walk into and go, \u201cYou know, this feels right\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> He won\u2019t be shocked by it. I think he\u2019s always pleasantly surprised and enjoys that time. I think people <em>long<\/em> for conversation that\u2019s more meaningful than just the average\u2014you know, \u201cWhat did you do today?\u201d or \u201cHow was the game that you played in last night?\u201d We\u2019re looking for opportunities to have more intentional conversations. I think he\u2019ll appreciate it and welcome that. He is intentional with his conversations; but to have it, as a family, is, I think, welcomed and I think a special part of who we are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; I want you to think about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This will be the last question! [Laughter] This is my broadcast! She may think it\u2019s hers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> She\u2019s taking over\u2014she\u2019s taking over for him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to ask you about Thanksgiving at your home in 2042. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going 26 years into the future\u2014so Thanksgiving 2042. We\u2019ll assume that there might be one, or two, or three, or more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Nope! It\u2019s better to <em>stop<\/em> there! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; there might be some children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014who are now teenagers or older.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You are the one responsible for what your family\u2019s Thanksgiving is going to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, what will you carry with you, do you imagine, from what you grew up with? How will your Thanksgiving be similar and how will it be different; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Well, we will absolutely have the Company French Toast; but I think\u2014when I look into what I would love for our Thanksgivings to look like\u2014I would love for them to have that intentionality of conversation. It may not be to the same degree or to the same level, but I just remember how mom powered through every year: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe will read the story. This is our time. We are going to read this story.\u201d She didn\u2019t quit!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I think\u2014thinking through having my own kids, and what I want to teach them, and what I want to instill into their lives\u2014and teach them about being intentional, and having good conversations, and having people gathered around the table. I think that\u2019s what I would like to teach them and to instill into their lives, whether that\u2019s through a Thanksgiving conversation, or if it\u2019s every day when we have dinner together, or once a week because things get crazy\u2014that\u2019s something that I would want them to take away, regardless of the season\u2014but especially at Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ll check in in 26 years and see how it turns out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong> Sure! Don\u2019t replace me just yet! [Laughter] But, as I\u2019m listening to this, I couldn\u2019t help but think just how God rewarded Barbara\u2019s faithfulness to import some traditions around our Thanksgiving table. In fact, one of my favorite memories, if not my greatest, is when we ate out on the deck. Our adult children had us quarantined to the end of the table with all of the young grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So all of the adult children, who were down at the other end of the table, having a delightful, uninterrupted conversation\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Adult conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and Barbara and I are cleaning up spills \/ we\u2019re interacting\u2014[Laughter]\u2014which, we love grandkids and all; but we weren\u2019t a part of the adult conversation! We were kind of wanting to be with our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t remember the number; but it was 25 of us or so, out on the deck with numerous card tables set up, end to end, and then a couple of real tables at the other end. It was just a delight. It was a mess! I\u2019m glad it was outside\u2014we could hose it off after it was done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to ask both of you about the relational dynamic of the Thanksgiving meal; because when you\u2019re raising your kids, you\u2019re controlling that dynamic to a certain extent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re kind of deciding what the priorities are going to be, and you\u2019re directing what\u2019s going to go on that day. When your kids become adult kids, and families get together for an extended family Thanksgiving, as you\u2019re talking about doing here in a couple of weeks, there can be some drama that comes with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There can be some listeners who think: \u201cI used to love Thanksgiving; but <em>now<\/em>, it just feels like we\u2019re walking on eggshells with everybody. We know what topics not to bring up. Sure enough, somebody\u2019s going to say something that\u2019s going to hurt someone else\u2019s feelings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to have\u2014instead of a wonderful blessed Thanksgiving\u2014we\u2019re going to look at each other and go, \u2018Why does it always go south for us?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got three words for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And I have a word\u2014and that is, \u201cWe\u2019ve been there too.\u201d We\u2019ve had some Thanksgivings, where kids weren\u2019t excited about doing the story; they didn\u2019t want to write what they were thankful for; or they were just not doing well. They made it real clear that they weren\u2019t doing well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn those times\u2014what I\u2019ve noticed that we\u2019ve had to do, as our family has gotten older\u2014when our children were at home, as you said, we controlled the environment \/ we controlled the situation. They may have rolled their eyes \/ they may have complained; but we read the story and everyone wrote what they were thankful for. But now that they\u2019re married, and now that they have children, and they all gather together, we can\u2019t manage that \/ we can\u2019t control that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pick out <em>really<\/em> short portions of the story; and we read maybe three paragraphs if it\u2019s really crazy like the day we had Thanksgiving out on the deck. Sometimes, we read a little bit more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt helps now that our oldest grandkids are old enough that they can pick up the book and read it. So, in the last three or four years\u2014maybe five\u2014we\u2019ve had our grandkids read the story. That helps them pay attention, and the parents are real proud that their kids are reading. They are supportive because, you know, \u201cMy daughter\u201d or \u201cMy son is reading the book to everybody, and I\u2019m going to support that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know, it has changed and evolved. We\u2019re at a different place than we were when it was just us with our six at home, but it still works.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But here\u2019s more what I\u2019m thinking about\u2014I\u2019m thinking about this gathering including one adult child, who\u2019s making choices that mom and dad are heartbroken about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Another adult child, who\u2019s not getting along with a sibling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Another one; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Another adult child, who\u2019s coming here and, if the subject of politics comes, it\u2019s going to be a war, especially with what this year\u2019s election cycle has looked like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you just think: \u201cWell, it\u2019s no wonder that we talk about the weather and football; because if we get into anything that feels meaningful, we could have real drama on our hands. Everybody gets their feelings hurt, and everybody goes isolated to one corner of the house, and nobody talks to anybody anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But to me, that\u2019s even more reason to help everyone focus on gratitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you have the questions\u2014the ribbon questions that we were talking about earlier\u2014and you just help everyone say just one thing that they\u2019re grateful for\u2014even the kids that are not getting along can find something for which they\u2019re grateful, and they can share it\u2014even if it\u2019s just a word or two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What are you trying to say or do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picking up the \u201cUntie Your Story.\u201d I\u2019m thinking of how these 12 napkin ties, that have 12 different questions, can do the exact same thing you\u2019re talking about and direct the conversation\u2014and lift it out of, maybe, self-absorption, or being hurt, or being disappointed, or having a pity party. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the thing\u2014if you\u2019re waiting for the perfect moment for a family, you\u2019re going to be waiting a long time if you\u2019ve got very many family members.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Honestly, a family is a group of imperfect people. Just look at the families in the Bible! I mean, they\u2019re not painted with airbrush and with Photoshop<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> colors\u2014they\u2019re painted, warts and all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think we need to learn to accept\u2014I know that\u2019s hard for certain moms and dads, listening to this right now\u2014grandparents. They so want peace in their family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I get that\u2014I want it, too; but we just have to learn to settle for less, maybe, than what we wanted\u2014not correct everyone \/ not try to straighten it all out\u2014but allow God to take up residence \/ to show up there. Ask the family members some meaningful questions, and let them answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And I think, too, as the mom and dad\u2014or as the grandma and the grandpa who are hosting\u2014I think we have an opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we\u2019re griping and we\u2019re not doing well, and when we\u2019re not getting along with each other\u2014say Dennis and I aren\u2019t\u2014God doesn\u2019t stop loving us. He doesn\u2019t stop being intentional toward us. He doesn\u2019t go away. I think that creating an atmosphere that intentionally loves and turns people\u2019s hearts toward gratitude, which is what Thanksgiving is about, is a very good thing, even if you don\u2019t get the response that you long to get. We\u2019re still mimicking what God has called us to do, which is to be a thankful people. To me, that trumps everybody\u2019s bad attitudes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, here\u2019s where your napkin ribbons help with that; because the questions you\u2019re asking on the napkin ribbons\u2014that everybody can answer\u2014are going to direct the conversation in a direction that is going to be affirming\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s going to be positive \/ that\u2019s going to have people talking about positive things rather than bickering with one another.
