Barbara Rainey knows that feeling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s a real trap that women have always fallen into, but I think it\u2019s even worse today because of Pinterest<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and because of Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. We see so many images of what other people do. It\u2019s really hard for women not to go: \u201cOh, my home is not as good,\u201d \u201cMy table is not as good,\u201d \u201cMy decorations aren\u2019t as good. I <em>should<\/em> be more like that, but mine\u2019s not as good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, November 3<sup>rd<\/sup>. Your home does not need a lot of fancy decorations in order for it to give off the aroma of Christ during the Thanksgiving season. We\u2019ll talk about that today. Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I almost thought there was going to be a turkey in here when I walked\u2014it kind of has that ambience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s a ways away, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s still a ways away; but you look at how our\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s running for his life right now! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You look at how our studio \/ our broadcast table\u2014and we should tell our listeners\u2014they may not realize that for all of the years we\u2019ve been recording <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, we have done it around a dining room table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know what let\u2019s do? Let\u2019s put a picture of the table on the web so our listeners can see. There\u2019s a reason for this\u2014because I just want to display what our engineer, Keith Lynch, has just lost sleep over\u2014[Laughter]\u2014he has tried to convince us to get a first-class either marble top\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Something that would not have the ambient properties of a dining room table\u2014that\u2019s what he was looking for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you buy this originally?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I did. I found this table at an antique store.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; believe it or not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just want you listeners to know\u2014Bob is notorious, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, for having decorated the first studio with purple carpet on the walls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m under contract with HGTV to do a whole series called <em>Poor Decorating Choices<\/em>, with Bob Lepine as your host. [Laughter] It\u2019s going to be a smash reality show.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Some of our listeners just exhaled, because they thought you had <em>all<\/em> the gifts\u2014but no; he does not have that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he bought this table, and\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014what is it? Is it walnut, Keith? What is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>It\u2019s a combination of oak\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It has a veneer on the top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>A birch veneer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s kind of creaky.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We got the table initially and said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to put this in the studio,\u201d because we knew we\u2019d have a lot of people joining us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> who weren\u2019t used to doing radio regularly. We thought, \u201cIt will feel better for everybody if they\u2019re sitting around a dining room table to have a conversation like we want to have.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve recorded everything at the dining room table for the last 24 years; and why, today, our dining room table is decorated like a Thanksgiving dining room table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s a reason\u2014there\u2019s a reason! Barbara joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>! [Laughter] What do our wives do but bring order out of the chaos and make it welcoming and festive?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome again to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Sweetheart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad I could spruce up this table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve spruced me up for years, Sweetheart<strong>. <\/strong>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Part of the reason you went to decorating this table is to send a message to our listeners <em>through<\/em> us. Let\u2019s just be honest\u2014if it was left to Dennis and me, we probably would not talk about sprucing up a dining room table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct; you would not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That would be\u2014on our list of priorities for your home\u2014sprucing up your dining room table would not be something we\u2019d spend a whole lot of time on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Most assuredly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you think this is an area where some attention being paid makes spiritual sense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs that what you\u2019re saying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I\u2019m saying. Gathering\u2014with your family and friends, neighbors, loved ones \/ whoever\u2014is a <em>very<\/em> important activity that mirrors what God does with us. All throughout Scripture there are verses where God talks about gathering His people \/ gathering His children\u2014bringing us together. I think there is more to that activity of gathering with a group of other believers than we realize in this fast-paced culture\u2014where we eat take-out; we sit in front of the TV; we may eat together, and everybody\u2019s on their smartphones the whole time, and there are no conversations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanksgiving is a great time to go back to the way we used to eat <em>all<\/em> of our meals\u2014which is around the table in person\u2014and to focus on being present with one another, together, and create an experience around a meal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You can be gathered and still not be present.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I think we\u2019ve all been in situations like that, whether it\u2019s\u2014I\u2019m thinking about an anniversary dinner, where I was checking my phone more than I should have been checking my phone. That was duly noted by the other person attending the anniversary dinner that particular time. You can be present without being fully present.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what you\u2019re saying is\u2014we need to recapture a sense of what being fully present feels like in a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you don\u2019t, there\u2019s erosion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, and I think we miss what God wants us to experience. I think we all long for connection \/ we all long for meaningful conversation\u2014we want to feel like we belong. We all have this innate desire to belong, which is why people join clubs and kids in the inner city sometimes join gangs. I mean, belonging is an essence of the way God made us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you belong to a family\u2014and you gather with just your immediate family or extended family\u2014or you bring in friends, there\u2019s a sense of connectedness \/ there\u2019s a sense of belonging that mirrors what God wants for us and what He will do for us one day when He gathers His people to Himself one day at the end of the age, and we\u2019re all living in heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He made us for relationships. One of the ways we experience relationships is around a dinner table. Thanksgiving can be a <em>phenomenal<\/em> time to be very intentional about gathering your family together and not just doing what you always do. In fact, I just jotted down, \u201cWhat are some of the things that compete with us gathering together around Thanksgiving?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll just reflect on my own upbringing\u2014it wasn\u2019t technology back then \/ it was a sporting event or maybe taking a nap in the living room. We didn\u2019t do much of anything from a purposeful standpoint around Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now wait. Both of those are pretty purposeful for me\u2014a football game and a nap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Those are pretty big deals.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But they\u2019re not very relational.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They aren\u2019t; and at the end of the day, it\u2019s like, \u201cWere you really together?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d say some of my fondest memories of my dad were leaning up against his arm\u2014against my little face and feeling the hairs on his arm against my face\u2014and watching the game of the week on TV. But I think for Thanksgiving, the purpose of the holiday is so elevated for families, it ought to be a time when we truly get intentional and connect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just share some other reasons why I think we\u2019re not connecting well. One is\u2014we\u2019re afraid. We\u2019re afraid everyone\u2019s not going to be happy if we try something\u2014if we have some kind of purposeful question we ask at the dinner table \/ if we talk about what we\u2019re thankful for\u2014somebody\u2019s going to grouse about it \/ somebody\u2019s going to gripe about, \u201cDo we have to do that again?\u201d I just have to say\u2014it feels safer to be isolated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it feels safer to do nothing, too; and I think that\u2019s the trap we fall into. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause, yes, people will be unhappy; and yes, our children complained a lot of times about the story we read or the questions we asked; but they got something out of it\u2014we had a meaningful conversation. Everybody doesn\u2019t have to like it\u2014that\u2019s okay\u2014but if you wait for everybody to like it, you\u2019ll never do anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But what you\u2019ve done through your Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> line of resources for families is to help moms set the table. I\u2019m not talking about necessarily, physically\u2014but that can be a part of it\u2014to help families truly connect, not just go through and gobble down the turkey, and the dressing, and the gravy\u2014it all sounds great; but it\u2019s like, \u201cThere needs to be something of meaning around the holiday that draws us together and binds us together as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think part of what you have in mind here, Barbara, is that\u2014with how you decorate a table and a home during the holidays, you can either invite or you can detract from what can be a very meaningful relational connection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct; and it\u2019s not just inviting\u2014I really agree with you\u2014the way a table is set \/ the environment that a woman creates\u2014and it\u2019s mostly women who do this\u2014those are really important, but I think it\u2019s also inspiring. I think\u2014when you make something beautiful and you take the time to pay attention to the table and to set it in such a way that it\u2019s out of the ordinary\u2014now, you can still use paper plates and have it be out of the ordinary\u2014because our Thanksgiving dinner is <em>always<\/em> on paper plates because there are thirty-some odd people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Paper plates at Thanksgiving?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; yes. We do paper plates at our family Thanksgiving, because there are so many of us. Who wants to be in the kitchen for hours afterwards? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yes; you can still elevate and make a statement around the table\u2014or the multiple tables, as we have\u2014that inspires people and makes them say: \u201cThere is something meaningful about this gathering. There is something important going on here. It\u2019s worth me paying attention and investing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I think this is important, because I think some of our listeners are wondering if you\u2019re saying: \u201cIf you don\u2019t do the Pinterest thing or the Martha Stewart thing\u2014if you don\u2019t get<em> Southern Living<\/em> out and say, \u2018This is what my Thanksgiving is going to look like,\u2019\u201d\u2014 and maybe I said <em>Southern Living<\/em> because we live in the South \/ maybe it\u2019s <em>Western Magazine<\/em> or some of these other\u2014<em>New England Magazine<\/em>\u2014\u201cIf your dining room doesn\u2019t look like it belongs in a magazine, you have <em>failed<\/em> to achieve what you need to achieve.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a real trap that women have always fallen into, but I think it\u2019s even worse today because of Pinterest and because of Instagram. We see so many images of what other people do. I <em>should<\/em> be more like that,\u201d\u2014and we fall into that trap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re trying to communicate on this broadcast and through what we\u2019ve created with Ever Thine Home is\u2014you just make the effort to create meaningful conversation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can use our \u201cUntie Your Story\u201d ribbon questions, or you can write your own questions. But if you take the effort \/ you make the investment, there will be some rewards. You will have kids who are going to roll their eyes, but it\u2019s still worth it in the end; because everyone will appreciate the fact that you took the time and tried to make the effort. I think God honors that \/ I think God rewards that\u2014when we intentionally gather and try to create meaningful moments with our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re not just talking about a pretty table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What Barbara\u2019s doing is elevating the meal and the time around the table so that it\u2019s intentional around building relationships. You know, it is one thing to have the Pinterest look; but if you\u2019re not going somewhere \/ if you\u2019re not inviting people to get to know each other and find out what\u2019s taking place in their lives\u2014you\u2019ve run by this real quickly, Barbara\u2014but I think \u201cUntie Your Story\u201d is a great tool, because it\u2019s a napkin ribbon. On each ribbon is a different question that you would ask at the dinner table of each person around the table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know there are going to be up to 12 different questions that could be answered at the table by the guests. What family member doesn\u2019t love for someone to ask him or her a question that\u2019s not just: \u201cWhat kind of day did you have?\u201d or \u201cHow did our favorite football team do last weekend?\u201d or the weather. You\u2019re talking about going beyond the surface, down to some of the most meaningful questions you could ever ask someone\u2014reliving a great Thanksgiving: \u201cWhat\u2019s a Thanksgiving that was most memorable to you?\u201d and then, \u201cWhy? What made it that way? What happened there?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process, you\u2019re building relationships; because you\u2019re not just gathering\u2014you\u2019re gathering intentionally around a purpose. I think one of the reasons why people aren\u2019t doing this today is they\u2019ve lost the art at the dinner table, for one reason; and secondly, they don\u2019t know what to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey don\u2019t know how to move it beyond the surface discussion down to questions; and it feels really, really risky. I\u2019m saying, \u201cRisk it!\u201d because what you\u2019ll experience\u2014I can almost promise you\u2014is going to be positive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and let me say that, if listeners would like to see some of the stuff you\u2019ve been busy creating, they can go to FamilyLifeToday.com to see the Ever Thine Home resources you\u2019ve been creating. Your <em>goal<\/em> with all of this\u2014whether it\u2019s the napkin ribbons or\u2014now, you have placemats? These are placemats; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Each one with a different Scripture passage on it\u2014all related to gathering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So there are four different placemats?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Four placemats and they each have a different verse about God gathering His people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ll just say\u2014you can kind of see what we\u2019re talking about if you go to FamilyLifeToday.com and you click the link to look at it. But I want to remind listeners\u2014your whole motivation in this \/ your whole goal is to find ways to make it easier for connection to happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. Speaking of the placemats, for instance\u2014to sit down at a table and to see Scripture in front of you, even if you don\u2019t talk about it together, as a family\u2014to see this placemat in front of me that says, \u201cWith great compassion I will gather you,\u201d and to think about God wanting to gather me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think about hugging one another\u2014that\u2019s a form of gathering. We <em>all<\/em> want to be enveloped \/ we all want to be hugged. We all want to be brought close, because we feel that connectedness. So to think about God saying to me, \u201cWith compassion I want to gather you\u201d\u2014imagine someone in your family sitting down, and that\u2019s the verse in front of them or this one that says, \u201cWhere two or three are gathered together, I am among them,\u201d\u2014all of a sudden, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cOh, there are five or six of us here,\u201d or \u201cOh, there are ten of us here; God is present with us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need these biblical reminders of God\u2019s presence, and who He is, and how He feels toward us to turn our heads toward Him \/ to turn our hearts toward Him during these holiday moments; because it\u2019s too easy to be distracted by the games and all the shallow conversation and our devices. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you sit down and you have this Scripture in front of you, it makes one pause, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think what Barbara\u2019s really recommending here is a practical way to fulfill Deuteronomy 6\u2014it talks about the command, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and you shall instruct and teach your children to do the same.\u201d Then it talks about writing His commandments and these reminders on the doorposts of your house and on the gate and as some kind of headband on your forehead. Those were all, culturally, the way they decorated, back in those days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have different things today, and a placemat\u2014I can just imagine somebody sitting down and reading this placemat and saying: \u201c\u2018I will gather you together.\u2019\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat does that mean\u2014that God will gather us together? How has He done that?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, in our case, I\u2019m thinking of soon to be 23 grandkids, 12 adults, and Barbara and me. Wow!. You know, 44 years ago, there was just Barbara and me. He blessed us\u2014as a couple, and our children, and we have grandkids surrounding this table\u2014He has gathered us together: \u201cWe\u2019re not just anybody; we\u2019re here on purpose. What\u2019s that purpose?\u201d And then talk about it at the table instead of just working your way through the sweet potato pie, and the mashed potatoes, and gravy, and all. Instead, have some conversations around the spiritual meaning of Thanksgiving and how He has impacted you and your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever really stopped to consider this\u2014but the environment we walk into \/ we step into does adjust how we think and how we feel about where we are. Some environments will create a relaxed feeling\u2014people will be more open. Some environments are formal and stiff, and you feel like you have to be proper. The environment a woman chooses to create\u2014again, we\u2019re saying this is\u00a0 primarily something women do\u2014that environment is setting the thermostat for what the engagement is going to be like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I think the atmosphere in our homes is very, very important; because if you think about it\u2014think about this verse, \u201cWhere two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there,\u201d\u2014so if we have a believing home, Christ should be present in our home. That should be an awareness that everyone feels, or is aware of, or is reminded of every time they walk in our door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen someone comes into our home, I hope that they will feel welcome; I hope they will feel relaxed; I hope they will feel at ease; and I hope that they will be aware of the presence of Christ, because our home is a reflection of Him. We are His containers, so to speak\u2014He lives within us\u2014and so I think we have an obligation to create an atmosphere in our home that reflects who He is. You can go into homes where you don\u2019t feel comfortable \/ you don\u2019t feel welcome\u2014it feels stiff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut think about how you feel when you walk into a cathedral. If you\u2019ve ever been in a cathedral in New York City, or in the cathedral in Washington, DC, or the cathedrals of Europe\u2014when you walk in that door, there is an incredible feeling of God\u2019s presence \/ of the majesty of God, of His power, of His greatness, of His beauty\u2014just because of the way the building is constructed and the way you feel when you walk in the door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, in a smaller sense, our homes should communicate something similar. When someone walks in our home, something about the environment \/ something about the atmosphere\u2014the way we display our faith\u2014should communicate a taste of that same experience\u2014that people are aware of God\u2019s presence and they sense something is different about us and about our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I know we said that Pinterest can kind of drive people to a level of distraction here that may be unhealthy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And an obsession, too, Bob\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014trying to get everything so perfect you\u2019re forgetting the people that the table\u2019s being set for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But I\u2019ve seen a few of your resources getting pinned on Pinterest. There are women who are noticing and sharing what it is you\u2019re doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; there are good uses for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Because I want to inspire women to make statements about what their faith is in their home. So there are good uses for it; I agree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Do you have a favorite memory, Bob, of how you gathered together at Thanksgiving, either growing up as a boy or with your family\u2014you and Mary Ann with your kids, growing up, or even as adults?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was trying to think about specific Thanksgiving memories, because I don\u2019t have a whole lot from my childhood that I can pull on\u2014other than I can still see the fancy China, and I can still see the normal food things that we got. We never did stuffing. I didn\u2019t even know what stuffing was until I was a young adult and still think it\u2019s an odd kind of a thing. But we had a particular Jell-O<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that my mom made at Thanksgiving. So, I\u2019m remembering food and I\u2019m remembering tables.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why am I not surprised that it\u2019s a memory about food? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The more dominant memories for me, though, are from when we had our kids at home and when we would go over to my mom\u2019s house; because she would often be the one who cooked the turkey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven when our kids had started going to college, Grandma took the responsibility to cook the turkey at her house. We\u2019d often go over there and crowd into her small house as the place where we had Thanksgiving dinner. We did not have enough table space for everybody to sit down at the table, because her kitchen and dining area didn\u2019t have enough to seat our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But I have specific memories of that\u2014the smell of the house, the feel of just all being together, coming in from a cold day into a warm kitchen, which is a part of what you feel like at Thanksgiving. Let\u2019s put a picture of the table on the web so our listeners can see. There\u2019s a reason for this\u2014because I just want to display what our engineer, Keith Lynch, has just lost sleep over\u2014[Laughter]\u2014he has tried to convince us to get a first-class either marble top\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Something that would not have the ambient properties of a dining room table\u2014that\u2019s what he was looking for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Did you buy this originally?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I did. I found this table at an antique store.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; believe it or not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just want you listeners to know\u2014Bob is notorious, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, for having decorated the first studio with purple carpet on the walls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m under contract with HGTV to do a whole series called <em>Poor Decorating Choices<\/em>, with Bob Lepine as your host. [Laughter] It\u2019s going to be a smash reality show.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Some of our listeners just exhaled, because they thought you had <em>all<\/em> the gifts\u2014but no; he does not have that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he bought this table, and\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014what is it? Is it walnut, Keith? What is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>It\u2019s a combination of oak\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>It has a veneer on the top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>A birch veneer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s kind of creaky.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We got the table initially and said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to put this in the studio,\u201d because we knew we\u2019d have a lot of people joining us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> who weren\u2019t used to doing radio regularly. We thought, \u201cIt will feel better for everybody if they\u2019re sitting around a dining room table to have a conversation like we want to have.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve recorded everything at the dining room table for the last 24 years; and why, today, our dining room table is decorated like a Thanksgiving dining room table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s a reason\u2014there\u2019s a reason! Barbara joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>! [Laughter] What do our wives do but bring order out of the chaos and make it welcoming and festive?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome again to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Sweetheart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I\u2019m glad I could spruce up this table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019ve spruced me up for years, Sweetheart<strong>. <\/strong>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Part of the reason you went to decorating this table is to send a message to our listeners <em>through<\/em> us. Let\u2019s just be honest\u2014if it was left to Dennis and me, we probably would not talk about sprucing up a dining room table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct; you would not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That would be\u2014on our list of priorities for your home\u2014sprucing up your dining room table would not be something we\u2019d spend a whole lot of time on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Most assuredly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you think this is an area where some attention being paid makes spiritual sense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs that what you\u2019re saying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I\u2019m saying. Gathering\u2014with your family and friends, neighbors, loved ones \/ whoever\u2014is a <em>very<\/em> important activity that mirrors what God does with us. All throughout Scripture there are verses where God talks about gathering His people \/ gathering His children\u2014bringing us together. I think there is more to that activity of gathering with a group of other believers than we realize in this fast-paced culture\u2014where we eat take-out; we sit in front of the TV; we may eat together, and everybody\u2019s on their smartphones the whole time, and there are no conversations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanksgiving is a great time to go back to the way we used to eat <em>all<\/em> of our meals\u2014which is around the table in person\u2014and to focus on being present with one another, together, and create an experience around a meal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You can be gathered and still not be present.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I think we\u2019ve all been in situations like that, whether it\u2019s\u2014I\u2019m thinking about an anniversary dinner, where I was checking my phone more than I should have been checking my phone. That was duly noted by the other person attending the anniversary dinner that particular time. You can be present without being fully present.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what you\u2019re saying is\u2014we need to recapture a sense of what being fully present feels like in a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If you don\u2019t, there\u2019s erosion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, and I think we miss what God wants us to experience. I think we all long for connection \/ we all long for meaningful conversation\u2014we want to feel like we belong. We all have this innate desire to belong, which is why people join clubs and kids in the inner city sometimes join gangs. I mean, belonging is an essence of the way God made us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you belong to a family\u2014and you gather with just your immediate family or extended family\u2014or you bring in friends, there\u2019s a sense of connectedness \/ there\u2019s a sense of belonging that mirrors what God wants for us and what He will do for us one day when He gathers His people to Himself one day at the end of the age, and we\u2019re all living in heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He made us for relationships. One of the ways we experience relationships is around a dinner table. Thanksgiving can be a <em>phenomenal<\/em> time to be very intentional about gathering your family together and not just doing what you always do. In fact, I just jotted down, \u201cWhat are some of the things that compete with us gathering together around Thanksgiving?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll just reflect on my own upbringing\u2014it wasn\u2019t technology back then \/ it was a sporting event or maybe taking a nap in the living room. We didn\u2019t do much of anything from a purposeful standpoint around Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now wait. Both of those are pretty purposeful for me\u2014a football game and a nap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Those are pretty big deals.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>But they\u2019re not very relational.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They aren\u2019t; and at the end of the day, it\u2019s like, \u201cWere you really together?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019d say some of my fondest memories of my dad were leaning up against his arm\u2014against my little face and feeling the hairs on his arm against my face\u2014and watching the game of the week on TV. But I think for Thanksgiving, the purpose of the holiday is so elevated for families, it ought to be a time when we truly get intentional and connect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just share some other reasons why I think we\u2019re not connecting well. One is\u2014we\u2019re afraid. We\u2019re afraid everyone\u2019s not going to be happy if we try something\u2014if we have some kind of purposeful question we ask at the dinner table \/ if we talk about what we\u2019re thankful for\u2014somebody\u2019s going to grouse about it \/ somebody\u2019s going to gripe about, \u201cDo we have to do that again?\u201d I just have to say\u2014it feels safer to be isolated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Well, it feels safer to do nothing, too; and I think that\u2019s the trap we fall into. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause, yes, people will be unhappy; and yes, our children complained a lot of times about the story we read or the questions we asked; but they got something out of it\u2014we had a meaningful conversation. Everybody doesn\u2019t have to like it\u2014that\u2019s okay\u2014but if you wait for everybody to like it, you\u2019ll never do anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But what you\u2019ve done through your Ever Thine Home<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> line of resources for families is to help moms set the table. I\u2019m not talking about necessarily, physically\u2014but that can be a part of it\u2014to help families truly connect, not just go through and gobble down the turkey, and the dressing, and the gravy\u2014it all sounds great; but it\u2019s like, \u201cThere needs to be something of meaning around the holiday that draws us together and binds us together as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think part of what you have in mind here, Barbara, is that\u2014with how you decorate a table and a home during the holidays, you can either invite or you can detract from what can be a very meaningful relational connection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Correct; and it\u2019s not just inviting\u2014I really agree with you\u2014the way a table is set \/ the environment that a woman creates\u2014and it\u2019s mostly women who do this\u2014those are really important, but I think it\u2019s also inspiring. I think\u2014when you make something beautiful and you take the time to pay attention to the table and to set it in such a way that it\u2019s out of the ordinary\u2014now, you can still use paper plates and have it be out of the ordinary\u2014because our Thanksgiving dinner is <em>always<\/em> on paper plates because there are thirty-some odd people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Paper plates at Thanksgiving?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; yes. We do paper plates at our family Thanksgiving, because there are so many of us. Who wants to be in the kitchen for hours afterwards? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yes; you can still elevate and make a statement around the table\u2014or the multiple tables, as we have\u2014that inspires people and makes them say: \u201cThere is something meaningful about this gathering. There is something important going on here. It\u2019s worth me paying attention and investing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I think this is important, because I think some of our listeners are wondering if you\u2019re saying: \u201cIf you don\u2019t do the Pinterest thing or the Martha Stewart thing\u2014if you don\u2019t get<em> Southern Living<\/em> out and say, \u2018This is what my Thanksgiving is going to look like,\u2019\u201d\u2014 and maybe I said <em>Southern Living<\/em> because we live in the South \/ maybe it\u2019s <em>Western Magazine<\/em> or some of these other\u2014<em>New England Magazine<\/em>\u2014\u201cIf your dining room doesn\u2019t look like it belongs in a magazine, you have <em>failed<\/em> to achieve what you need to achieve.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a real trap that women have always fallen into, but I think it\u2019s even worse today because of Pinterest and because of Instagram. We see so many images of what other people do. It\u2019s really hard for women not to go: \u201cOh, mine\u2019s not as good,\u201d \u201cMy home is not as good,\u201d \u201cMy table is not as good,\u201d \u201cMy decorations aren\u2019t as good. I <em>should<\/em> be more like that,\u201d\u2014and we fall into that trap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re trying to communicate on this broadcast and through what we\u2019ve created with Ever Thine Home is\u2014you just make the effort to create meaningful conversation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can use our \u201cUntie Your Story\u201d ribbon questions, or you can write your own questions. But if you take the effort \/ you make the investment, there will be some rewards. I think God honors that \/ I think God rewards that\u2014when we intentionally gather and try to create meaningful moments with our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We\u2019re not just talking about a pretty table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What Barbara\u2019s doing is elevating the meal and the time around the table so that it\u2019s intentional around building relationships. You know, it is one thing to have the Pinterest look; but if you\u2019re not going somewhere \/ if you\u2019re not inviting people to get to know each other and find out what\u2019s taking place in their lives\u2014you\u2019ve run by this real quickly, Barbara\u2014but I think \u201cUntie Your Story\u201d is a great tool, because it\u2019s a napkin ribbon. On each ribbon is a different question that you would ask at the dinner table of each person around the table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know there are going to be up to 12 different questions that could be answered at the table by the guests. What family member doesn\u2019t love for someone to ask him or her a question that\u2019s not just: \u201cWhat kind of day did you have?\u201d or \u201cHow did our favorite football team do last weekend?\u201d or the weather. You\u2019re talking about going beyond the surface, down to some of the most meaningful questions you could ever ask someone\u2014reliving a great Thanksgiving: \u201cWhat\u2019s a Thanksgiving that was most memorable to you?\u201d and then, \u201cWhy? What made it that way? What happened there?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process, you\u2019re building relationships; because you\u2019re not just gathering\u2014you\u2019re gathering intentionally around a purpose. I think one of the reasons why people aren\u2019t doing this today is they\u2019ve lost the art at the dinner table, for one reason; and secondly, they don\u2019t know what to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey don\u2019t know how to move it beyond the surface discussion down to questions; and it feels really, really risky. I\u2019m saying, \u201cRisk it!\u201d because what you\u2019ll experience\u2014I can almost promise you\u2014is going to be positive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and let me say that, if listeners would like to see some of the stuff you\u2019ve been busy creating, they can go to FamilyLifeToday.com to see the Ever Thine Home resources you\u2019ve been creating. These are placemats; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Each one with a different Scripture passage on it\u2014all related to gathering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So there are four different placemats?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Four placemats and they each have a different verse about God gathering His people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019ll just say\u2014you can kind of see what we\u2019re talking about if you go to FamilyLifeToday.com and you click the link to look at it. But I want to remind listeners\u2014your whole motivation in this \/ your whole goal is to find ways to make it easier for connection to happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes. Speaking of the placemats, for instance\u2014to sit down at a table and to see Scripture in front of you, even if you don\u2019t talk about it together, as a family\u2014to see this placemat in front of me that says, \u201cWith great compassion I will gather you,\u201d and to think about God wanting to gather me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think about hugging one another\u2014that\u2019s a form of gathering. We <em>all<\/em> want to be enveloped \/ we all want to be hugged. We all want to be brought close, because we feel that connectedness. So to think about God saying to me, \u201cWith compassion I want to gather you\u201d\u2014imagine someone in your family sitting down, and that\u2019s the verse in front of them or this one that says, \u201cWhere two or three are gathered together, I am among them,\u201d\u2014all of a sudden, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cOh, there are five or six of us here,\u201d or \u201cOh, there are ten of us here; God is present with us.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we need these biblical reminders of God\u2019s presence, and who He is, and how He feels toward us to turn our heads toward Him \/ to turn our hearts toward Him during these holiday moments; because it\u2019s too easy to be distracted by the games and all the shallow conversation and our devices. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you sit down and you have this Scripture in front of you, it makes one pause, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think what Barbara\u2019s really recommending here is a practical way to fulfill Deuteronomy 6\u2014it talks about the command, \u201cYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and you shall instruct and teach your children to do the same.\u201d Then it talks about writing His commandments and these reminders on the doorposts of your house and on the gate and as some kind of headband on your forehead. Those were all, culturally, the way they decorated, back in those days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have different things today, and a placemat\u2014I can just imagine somebody sitting down and reading this placemat and saying: \u201c\u2018I will gather you together.\u2019\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat does that mean\u2014that God will gather us together? How has He done that?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, in our case, I\u2019m thinking of soon to be 23 grandkids, 12 adults, and Barbara and me. Wow!. You know, 44 years ago, there was just Barbara and me. He blessed us\u2014as a couple, and our children, and we have grandkids surrounding this table\u2014He has gathered us together: \u201cWe\u2019re not just anybody; we\u2019re here on purpose. What\u2019s that purpose?\u201d And then talk about it at the table instead of just working your way through the sweet potato pie, and the mashed potatoes, and gravy, and all. Instead, have some conversations around the spiritual meaning of Thanksgiving and how He has impacted you and your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever really stopped to consider this\u2014but the environment we walk into \/ we step into does adjust how we think and how we feel about where we are. Some environments will create a relaxed feeling\u2014people will be more open. Some environments are formal and stiff, and you feel like you have to be proper. The environment a woman chooses to create\u2014again, we\u2019re saying this is\u00a0 primarily something women do\u2014that environment is setting the thermostat for what the engagement is going to be like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I think the atmosphere in our homes is very, very important; because if you think about it\u2014think about this verse, \u201cWhere two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there,\u201d\u2014so if we have a believing home, Christ should be present in our home. That should be an awareness that everyone feels, or is aware of, or is reminded of every time they walk in our door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen someone comes into our home, I hope that they will feel welcome; I hope they will feel relaxed; I hope they will feel at ease; and I hope that they will be aware of the presence of Christ, because our home is a reflection of Him. We are His containers, so to speak\u2014He lives within us\u2014and so I think we have an obligation to create an atmosphere in our home that reflects who He is. You can go into homes where you don\u2019t feel comfortable \/ you don\u2019t feel welcome\u2014it feels stiff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut think about how you feel when you walk into a cathedral. If you\u2019ve ever been in a cathedral in New York City, or in the cathedral in Washington, DC, or the cathedrals of Europe\u2014when you walk in that door, there is an incredible feeling of God\u2019s presence \/ of the majesty of God, of His power, of His greatness, of His beauty\u2014just because of the way the building is constructed and the way you feel when you walk in the door. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, in a smaller sense, our homes should communicate something similar. When someone walks in our home, something about the environment \/ something about the atmosphere\u2014the way we display our faith\u2014should communicate a taste of that same experience\u2014that people are aware of God\u2019s presence and they sense something is different about us and about our home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I know we said that Pinterest can kind of drive people to a level of distraction here that may be unhealthy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And an obsession, too, Bob\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014trying to get everything so perfect you\u2019re forgetting the people that the table\u2019s being set for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But I\u2019ve seen a few of your resources getting pinned on Pinterest. There are women who are noticing and sharing what it is you\u2019re doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right; there are good uses for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Because I want to inspire women to make statements about what their faith is in their home. So there are good uses for it; I agree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Do you have a favorite memory, Bob, of how you gathered together at Thanksgiving, either growing up as a boy or with your family\u2014you and Mary Ann with your kids, growing up, or even as adults?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was trying to think about specific Thanksgiving memories, because I don\u2019t have a whole lot from my childhood that I can pull on\u2014other than I can still see the fancy China, and I can still see the normal food things that we got. We never did stuffing. I didn\u2019t even know what stuffing was until I was a young adult and still think it\u2019s an odd kind of a thing. But we had a particular Jell-O<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that my mom made at Thanksgiving. So, I\u2019m remembering food and I\u2019m remembering tables.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why am I not surprised that it\u2019s a memory about food? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The more dominant memories for me, though, are from when we had our kids at home and when we would go over to my mom\u2019s house; because she would often be the one who cooked the turkey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven when our kids had started going to college, Grandma took the responsibility to cook the turkey at her house. We\u2019d often go over there and crowd into her small house as the place where we had Thanksgiving dinner. We did not have enough table space for everybody to sit down at the table, because her kitchen and dining area didn\u2019t have enough to seat our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But I have specific memories of that\u2014the smell of the house, the feel of just all being together, coming in from a cold day into a warm kitchen, which is a part of what you feel like at Thanksgiving.
