He proposed, they got engaged, and they got married all on the same day. It was a surprise to Amanda, and the story was documented with a video that wound up going viral on YouTube. Amanda was surprised by the reaction that came from some of the people who watched their story on video. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>We, actually\u2014on our YouTube documentary, people had the most issues with us not saying, \u201cI love you,\u201d for five years. We started to have this perspective of\u2014you know, when I say, \u201cI love you,\u201d that\u2019s not just a feeling or a temporary emotion\u2014that\u2019s a commitment to you \/ that\u2019s me saying, \u201cI love you forever.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s me saying, \u201cI am committed to <em>you<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, November 1<sup>st<\/sup>. Thanks for joining us. You know, there are some people who are kind of visionary\u2014they dream big dreams\u2014they get an idea, and they run with it. There are other people who are more planner-oriented, where they like to map out a strategy, know what\u2019s going on. I\u2019m trying to think of what happens when the two of those get put into one package\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I was thinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because it had to be the guy we\u2019re talking to today\u2014he\u2019s got to have a little of both of those going to pull off what he pulled off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I have to believe this is a part of being image-bearers of God\u2014that God made galaxies\u2014He brought all the elements together to make <em>billions<\/em> of stars, millions of galaxies, with just the very spoken word of His mouth. I think God, probably, had a big grin on His face when Ryan Leak proposed to Amanda Roman. I\u2019ve got to believe that God just had a big grin, because you were kind of doing something galactic. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn case our listeners don\u2019t know them, they have written a book together called <em>The One: An Amazing Love Story Starts with You<\/em>. They work together at a church called Covenant Church in Carrollton, Texas, just north of the Dallas \/ Ft. Worth area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you didn\u2019t listen to the earlier broadcast with them, you need to go back and hear the beginning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRyan, I want you to explain to our listeners, kind of, what you wanted to accomplish in one day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Well, my, now, wife, at the time\u2014probably, five years ago, now\u2014she wanted to get engaged and married on the same day. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She just mentioned that casually. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>She mentioned it casually to a friend, and I overheard it. I went to work to try and figure out how to make that happen. What I set out to accomplish was to do just that\u2014to get engaged in the morning and to get married at night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to do that as a surprise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; like she doesn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we should say\u2014she also wanted to get married on the beach in San Diego, and then on the beach in Puerto Rico, and then on the beach somewhere else. I mean, this could have just been something that hit her spur of the moment; but you picked it up and ran with it like she might be serious about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I mean, you just roll the dice every now and then; you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is a lifetime\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014covenant. Why not do it right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We shared earlier that there was one minor problem with this dream that he had, Amanda. That was in the person of your mom, who had raised you, as a single-parent mom. She was not all that jazzed about Ryan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>No; she was not that into it when he asked her if he could propose and marry me on the same day. He had a bit of a hurdle to get over with that one. Well, actually, Ryan had the hurdle to get over it\u2014I had no idea what was going on. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She couldn\u2019t call you after Ryan had showed up and asked for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014your hand and say, \u201cSo, tell me more about this boy\u201d; could she?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Right. And he couldn\u2019t call me either afterwards and say, \u201cHey, should I pull the plug on this?\u201d because it was a surprise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Well, she could have; and that was the scary part. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m just going to interrupt this story for a second. I hadn\u2019t thought of asking this question of you, Ryan; but one of my favorite questions to ask men and women guests on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014is to ask them: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOut of everything you\u2019ve done in your life, what is <em>the<\/em> most courageous thing you have ever done?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019re thinking, \u201cAsking Mom had to be on the list somewhere.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just wonder if this would be it or if he\u2019s done something else in his lifetime that demanded more courage than what he did in asking her\u2014and then, you, to marry him on the same day. What\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in your life, Ryan?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>You know, that\u2019s an interesting question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been told that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s a very interesting question, because marrying Amanda was easy, actually\u2014asking her to marry me. The planning was hard, but you just want to be with the one you love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat most people don\u2019t know about the behind the scenes of a surprise wedding is that there was more. There was a helicopter ride around Miami and where it said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWill you marry me today on the beach?\u201d and there was a hurricane that came through Florida\u2014one of the largest in Miami\u2019s history. There were Lamborghinis under water. People don\u2019t realize how <em>horrible<\/em> of a day it was, weather-wise, that ruined a lot of what was planned; but I didn\u2019t care. That wasn\u2019t what it was about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the most courageous things I\u2019ve ever done was I tried out for an NBA team. That was what I was trying to do in this thing called \u201cChasing failure.\u201d\u00a0 I just started emailing NBA teams and said, \u201cWill you give a guy you don\u2019t know a shot?\u201d\u00a0 That was scary, and one team gave me a shot. I walked into a place where I\u2019m usually the tallest person in the room, and I became the shortest. I had to face a lot of fears. That was the most courageous thing in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool. Well, you told me you played basketball\u2014that kind of fits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; back to the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what I want to know is\u2014what the day was supposed to look like. Again, Amanda has <em>no<\/em> idea this is coming. You\u2019ve mapped it all out. Where were you guys living at this time?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>She was living with somebody at our church, and I was living in what would be our new apartment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is in the Dallas \/ Ft. Worth area?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Dallas \/ Ft. Worth area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the wedding is planned for\u2014where?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Hollywood, Florida. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; so, you\u2019ve got to get everybody\u2014your family, her family, and <em>her<\/em> to Hollywood, Florida, for a wedding that she doesn\u2019t know is happening\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014which is about a hundred people; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Right. So, on June 6, 99 of us were there. Amanda was the only one not there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There was one detail\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes\u2014her flight got cancelled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was that supposed to be the day\u2014June 6?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>No; the day was June 7, but she was supposed to get there June 6. She got there at midnight on another flight on another airline because her original flight got cancelled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Under what pretense were you bringing her to Hollywood, Florida?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Now, that is hilarious. During the planning of the wedding, obviously, I\u2019m sure I had other stuff on my mind. We\u2019re on a date night one night; and she says: \u201cI really think we should help Norman and Shirley move\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI really feel like we\u2019re <em>supposed<\/em> to help Norman and Shirley move.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like: \u201cI don\u2019t really care about Norman and Shirley right now. I\u2019m stressed out of my mind.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like: \u201cWho\u2019s helping somebody? They need to be helping me right now!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m freaking out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI called them; and I was like: \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 Hey, Norman, where are you guys moving again?\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cMiami.\u201d [Laughter] I said, \u201cWhen are you moving?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cJune 6.\u201d\u00a0 I was like: \u201cThat\u2019s too\u2014that\u2019s\u2026\u201d She got herself to Miami. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t manipulate \/ I didn\u2019t do anything!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, God was your co-collaborator in this whole deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Honestly, I tell anybody that has a crazy dream: \u201cDo it!\u201d because it makes you fall to your knees; and God has to orchestrate stuff for all of this to happen. There\u2019s no <em>one<\/em> that can pull this off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what was going to be your best alibi for getting her to\u2014that\u2019s a short word for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>No; I had a bunch of reasons to get her there, because I travelled a lot\u2014travel and spoke. There were churches\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I could say, \u201cHey, have us come speak.\u201d\u00a0 You know, there are many ways to do it; but I hadn\u2019t even gotten there. I was so stressed about everything else. But two months before the wedding, it was her idea to help our friends move. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; so, you had planned that she was going to come in the afternoon of the 6<sup>th<\/sup>; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It turns out it\u2019s not going to be until midnight. You had the next day all mapped out. What was that supposed to look like according to the plan that you had?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>You know, I honestly didn\u2019t have it all figured out. I was\u2014I mean, in hindsight, you have great ideas, and you\u2019re polished, and you\u2019re ready to go. But I didn\u2019t have a handbook. I was freaking out\u2014like: \u201cAre you going to propose at nine?\u00a0 Is it going to be eight?\u00a0 Is it going to be ten?\u201d\u00a0 I was like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t have a schedule \/ an agenda for the day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t\u2014no; I mean, I didn\u2019t know how long it would take for her to do her hair and for the makeup artist to do that. I mean, it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014there were a <em>lot<\/em> of moving parts. And then, the storm came through\u2014the storm came through on Friday. I knew Saturday was going to be a rough day. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You actually flew her hairdresser in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>\u2014which is her sister; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014to do the hair and the makeup. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>The makeup artist was a different person\u2014but yes. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>He knows the details now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>He knows the difference because he had to fly them in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Amanda, you get there at midnight on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> on a delayed flight. It\u2019s been stressful\u2014it\u2019s like you\u2019re tired. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you have no idea what\u2019s happening the next day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Well, I was flying with two girls\u2014one that was also going to help move and the actual girl, Shirley, who was moving. When our flight got cancelled, they just had this look of sheer panic on their face; and I\u2019m fine. I\u2019m drinking a latte, walking through the airport. I mean, who wants to hurry up and go help somebody move?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m calling Ryan and saying, \u201cHey, our flight\u2019s cancelled.\u201d\u00a0 He already knew; because the girls were texting him, letting him know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is doing everything he can to get me on another flight with a different airline. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt one point, we actually had to split up\u2014myself and the two other girls. I\u2019m telling them: \u201cI don\u2019t want to split up with you guys. I\u2019ll stay here with you, and we can just all fly out tomorrow. It\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d\u00a0 And they\u2019re like: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I just feel better if you were there. Then, I can get myself there; but if you\u2019re there, it would take a lot of stress off of me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the back of my mind, I thought, \u201cIs she pushing me this way because Ryan is going to propose today?\u201d\u00a0 As soon as that thought clicked in my head, I said: \u201cOkay, girl. I\u2019ll see you later\u2014I\u2019ll see you in Miami!\u00a0 Let me go catch this flight real quick.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, yes; I showed up around midnight. He picked me up from the airport. I was so happy to see him\u2014hadn\u2019t seen him in about a week. I just thought, \u201cMaybe, this is the week I get proposed to.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>And that\u2019s how I ended the night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, Ryan, back to her mom\u2014had she taken a chill pill?\u2014because she was against this day occurring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>No; there was no chill pill. What was interesting is\u2014when you do a surprise wedding\u2014for those listeners who are thinking about it \/ praying about it\u2014[Laughter]\u2014you can\u2019t send out invitations; because if you send out invitations, what if she walks into one of their houses and sees it on a coffee table \/ on the refrigerator?\u00a0 That\u2019s a bad sign. If she sees that she\u2019s invited to her own surprise wedding\u2014that kind of ruins it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Save the dates don\u2019t work here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; you\u2019re playing by different rules. I had tried to reach back out to her [mother]. I reached out to counsel\u2014pastors\u2014and just said: \u201cHey, here\u2019s what I\u2019m thinking. Maybe, we do need more time.\u201d\u00a0 You know, you take <em>heed<\/em> to wise counsel\u2014you don\u2019t just think, \u201cEverybody else is just an idiot, and I\u2019m just a genius.\u201d You ask questions: \u201cIs there merit in this?\u201d\u00a0 After praying about it, talking with others about it, it was like, \u201cNo; move forward.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to ask Amanda\u2014I said, \u201cHey, is it a deal-breaker if Mom doesn\u2019t come to our wedding?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said: \u201cI\u2019m 50\/50. I\u2019m okay if she is, and I understand if she\u2019s not.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay!\u201d\u00a0 Well, I sent out the invitation via email and just said, \u201cHey, urgent message: \u2018Delete this upon receipt,\u2019\u201d type of deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was the next communication you had with her mom?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; I tried to call her a bunch of times, and she was busy. So, I just sent the invitation; and I sent a pretty stern email that said a lot\u2014I just said: \u201cHey, I love Jesus with all my heart; and I also love your daughter. On June 7, 2013, I\u2019m going to marry her. You are more than welcome to come. I\u2019ll fly you there\u2014you and your husband \/ your family\u2014whatever you need.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she called, obviously\u2014caught her attention a little bit. You know, we got into a debate about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was one of the coolest debates I\u2019ve ever had. Here\u2019s how the debate ended\u2014it ended with: \u201cWell, you know what?\u00a0 Ryan, I will be at this wedding, but I\u2019m not giving you my blessing. I\u2019ll be at the wedding, but I won\u2019t be there with my blessing.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to pray that God changes your heart on that.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to pray that God changes your heart.\u201d Then, she said something I\u2019ll never forget\u2014she said: \u201cWell, Ryan, we both serve a God of miracles. One way or another, He is going to have to do one for me to have a blessing at your wedding.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike I said\u2014three weeks before our wedding, Amanda graduated from college. Her mother comes down to Dallas; and of course, I pick her up and host her. We\u2019re out to eat\u2014all of that. She gets to see me a little bit more; and obviously, I have an iPad full of pictures of venues, and food, and everything that you want to show your future mother-in-law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou want her to be excited about this; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI show her everything\u2014we kind of go through the trip. It was copacetic, so to speak. We\u2019re driving her to the airport to go home\u2014she says, \u201cSo, Ryan, when are we going to see you next?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat in the world?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is with Amanda in the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Amanda\u2019s in the car; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I\u2019m looking in the rearview mirror\u2014like: \u201cSee you next?\u00a0 You know I\u2019m going to see you in like two weeks at the wedding.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m just like, \u201cIs she trying to spill the\u2026\u201d and she\u2019s trying to hint, \u201cI\u2019m in.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Aw!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t getting it\u2014I was like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were thinking the worst!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019m like: \u201cI\u2019m preaching in Chicago in July. I guess we\u2019ll see you then.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s like: \u201cOh, okay. That\u2019s cool.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I was like: \u201cOkay; she\u2019s acting super weird. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we pulled the bags out of the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe hugs me goodbye, and she holds me tight. She\u2019s like, \u201cHey; hey\u2026\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cYes?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou have my blessing, Ryan.\u201d\u00a0 What was crazy is\u2014the day before, I was praying for a miracle. It was cool to see things come full circle. Literally, since that day, we\u2019ve been tight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; June 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u2014you went to bed very early on June 7, because you got to the airport at midnight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When he picks you up the next morning, and he\u2019s taking you to go get married, did you sense anything was going on in him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>He picked me up from the hotel, and he had a camera guy with him. He had told me that we were there to help our friends move, but they were also youth pastors. So, we were going to be filming a video for the youth service. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI figured that that was who that was; but he was a little\u2014I could see a little spark in his eye. He just kind of looked like he was trying to hold back on being really excited. I figured we were going to get engaged that day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the other thing, too, is that we had never said, \u201cI love you,\u201d to one another. So, we\u2019re in the car\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Whoa, whoa, whoa!\u2014five years you\u2019ve been dating?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I mean, you\u2019ve told us earlier that in that five-year period, you had maintained purity and not slept together. You hadn\u2019t said, \u201cI love you,\u201d to one another?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>We hadn\u2019t \/ we hadn\u2019t. And it wasn\u2019t something that we\u2014when we first started dating had set out and said, \u201cOkay, we\u2019re not going to say this word.\u201d\u00a0 It was just kind of\u2014it kind of just happened. I think the other thing, too, is we\u2014actually, on our YouTube documentary, people had the most issues with us not saying, \u201cI love you,\u201d for five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMore than anything else in the documentary, that\u2019s the one thing that they had commented on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s because we have this fairytale idea of\u2014you know, you say it in the rain after a really great date; and it\u2019s a picturesque kind of scene\u2014but I mean, if you really get to the core of it \/ if you really bring the Bible into this, it\u2019s <em>so<\/em> much more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I wanted to ask Ryan here. Ryan, you guys were on a spiritual mission, as a couple, who were dating. It wasn\u2019t as though God was asked to show up at the wedding and that\u2019s the first time He\u2019s been in the relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>You know, we sat with a couple a couple of days ago. We started to ask them about what they wanted their marriage to look like. They couldn\u2019t answer the question\u2014they struggled: \u201cI want her to cook.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOkay. What else you got?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] \u201cYou know, it\u2019s like\u2014well, if we could go to the gym together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s like they didn\u2019t have the vernacular. I asked them a question\u2014I said, \u201cHave you ever seen a successful marriage?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s 33\u2014his parents divorced\u2014dad left when he was eight. He said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cEvery couple I know has gotten divorced.\u201d\u00a0 He goes: \u201cAnd my uncle, who is a pastor\u2014he was married 25 years. He\u2019s in the middle of a divorce right now. So, I\u2019ve never seen it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor a lot of people, I think they are almost stuck; because they don\u2019t have a model. It\u2019s like asking a person to go be good at basketball\u2014but doesn\u2019t watch the NBA \/ doesn\u2019t watch college\u2014in fact, \u201cDon\u2019t watch it anywhere\u2014just go figure it out. Just go in the gym and be awesome.\u201d\u00a0 How are they going to do that if they don\u2019t have a <em>model<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, for me and Amanda, we chose to surround ourselves with mentors \/ around other people. We said: \u201cWe want this\u2014this is how we want our home to feel like. We want people to walk in and feel the presence of God in our home.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not going to happen on accident. That\u2019s not going to happen\u2014that\u2019s not going to start when we get married. If I don\u2019t invite the presence of God into my apartment when I\u2019m by myself, what makes me think it\u2019s going to happen when I get married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Marriage was designed by God for a husband and a wife to reflect the transcendent nature of Almighty God to a fallen planet. A part of reflecting who God is, I believe, is to be on His mission for your lives. I feel that that question that you asked that young couple ought to be asked of every young couple that are getting married today; because they need to know\u2014not only what it is we feel for one another\u2014but \u201cWhat are we about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cWhere are we going? Where are we headed?\u201d It\u2019s not some kind of trite, little saying\u2014or like a song, <em>The Bicycle Built for Two<\/em>\u2014because you are at war. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Amanda: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You\u2019re heading out into a spiritual battlefield together\u2014where, if you don\u2019t know what your mission is and who your Commanding Officer is\u2014you\u2019re going to be casualty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I think most couples\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and I was like this when we got married\u2014most couples are thinking, \u201cWe want God to be in the middle of what we\u2019re doing here in getting married,\u201d instead of thinking, \u201cWe want our marriage to be in the middle of what God is doing here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>That\u2019s great. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a whole different perspective about marriage when you stop and think, \u201cOkay, we want the two of us in what He\u2019s doing,\u201d rather than \u201cWe want Him in what we\u2019re doing.\u201d\u00a0 It really shifts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014the focus. Amanda was surprised by the reaction that came from some of the people who watched their story on video. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>We, actually\u2014on our YouTube documentary, people had the most issues with us not saying, \u201cI love you,\u201d for five years. Thanks for joining us. You know, there are some people who are kind of visionary\u2014they dream big dreams\u2014they get an idea, and they run with it. There are other people who are more planner-oriented, where they like to map out a strategy, know what\u2019s going on. I\u2019m trying to think of what happens when the two of those get put into one package\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I was thinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because it had to be the guy we\u2019re talking to today\u2014he\u2019s got to have a little of both of those going to pull off what he pulled off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I have to believe this is a part of being image-bearers of God\u2014that God made galaxies\u2014He brought all the elements together to make <em>billions<\/em> of stars, millions of galaxies, with just the very spoken word of His mouth. I think God, probably, had a big grin on His face when Ryan Leak proposed to Amanda Roman. I\u2019ve got to believe that God just had a big grin, because you were kind of doing something galactic. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn case our listeners don\u2019t know them, they have written a book together called <em>The One: An Amazing Love Story Starts with You<\/em>. They work together at a church called Covenant Church in Carrollton, Texas, just north of the Dallas \/ Ft. Worth area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you didn\u2019t listen to the earlier broadcast with them, you need to go back and hear the beginning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRyan, I want you to explain to our listeners, kind of, what you wanted to accomplish in one day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Well, my, now, wife, at the time\u2014probably, five years ago, now\u2014she wanted to get engaged and married on the same day. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She just mentioned that casually. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>She mentioned it casually to a friend, and I overheard it. I went to work to try and figure out how to make that happen. What I set out to accomplish was to do just that\u2014to get engaged in the morning and to get married at night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to do that as a surprise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; like she doesn\u2019t know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we should say\u2014she also wanted to get married on the beach in San Diego, and then on the beach in Puerto Rico, and then on the beach somewhere else. I mean, this could have just been something that hit her spur of the moment; but you picked it up and ran with it like she might be serious about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I mean, you just roll the dice every now and then; you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is a lifetime\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014covenant. Why not do it right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We shared earlier that there was one minor problem with this dream that he had, Amanda. That was in the person of your mom, who had raised you, as a single-parent mom. She was not all that jazzed about Ryan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>No; she was not that into it when he asked her if he could propose and marry me on the same day. He had a bit of a hurdle to get over with that one. Well, actually, Ryan had the hurdle to get over it\u2014I had no idea what was going on. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She couldn\u2019t call you after Ryan had showed up and asked for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014your hand and say, \u201cSo, tell me more about this boy\u201d; could she?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Right. And he couldn\u2019t call me either afterwards and say, \u201cHey, should I pull the plug on this?\u201d because it was a surprise. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Well, she could have; and that was the scary part. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m just going to interrupt this story for a second. I hadn\u2019t thought of asking this question of you, Ryan; but one of my favorite questions to ask men and women guests on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014is to ask them: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOut of everything you\u2019ve done in your life, what is <em>the<\/em> most courageous thing you have ever done?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019re thinking, \u201cAsking Mom had to be on the list somewhere.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just wonder if this would be it or if he\u2019s done something else in his lifetime that demanded more courage than what he did in asking her\u2014and then, you, to marry him on the same day. What\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in your life, Ryan?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>You know, that\u2019s an interesting question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ve been told that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s a very interesting question, because marrying Amanda was easy, actually\u2014asking her to marry me. The planning was hard, but you just want to be with the one you love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat most people don\u2019t know about the behind the scenes of a surprise wedding is that there was more. There was a helicopter ride around Miami and where it said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWill you marry me today on the beach?\u201d and there was a hurricane that came through Florida\u2014one of the largest in Miami\u2019s history. There were Lamborghinis under water. People don\u2019t realize how <em>horrible<\/em> of a day it was, weather-wise, that ruined a lot of what was planned; but I didn\u2019t care. That wasn\u2019t what it was about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the most courageous things I\u2019ve ever done was I tried out for an NBA team. That was what I was trying to do in this thing called \u201cChasing failure.\u201d\u00a0 I just started emailing NBA teams and said, \u201cWill you give a guy you don\u2019t know a shot?\u201d\u00a0 That was scary, and one team gave me a shot. I walked into a place where I\u2019m usually the tallest person in the room, and I became the shortest. I had to face a lot of fears. That was the most courageous thing in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Cool. Well, you told me you played basketball\u2014that kind of fits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; back to the story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And what I want to know is\u2014what the day was supposed to look like. Again, Amanda has <em>no<\/em> idea this is coming. You\u2019ve mapped it all out. Where were you guys living at this time?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>She was living with somebody at our church, and I was living in what would be our new apartment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is in the Dallas \/ Ft. Worth area?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Dallas \/ Ft. Worth area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the wedding is planned for\u2014where?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Hollywood, Florida. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; so, you\u2019ve got to get everybody\u2014your family, her family, and <em>her<\/em> to Hollywood, Florida, for a wedding that she doesn\u2019t know is happening\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014which is about a hundred people; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Right. So, on June 6, 99 of us were there. Amanda was the only one not there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There was one detail\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes\u2014her flight got cancelled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Was that supposed to be the day\u2014June 6?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>No; the day was June 7, but she was supposed to get there June 6. She got there at midnight on another flight on another airline because her original flight got cancelled. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Under what pretense were you bringing her to Hollywood, Florida?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Now, that is hilarious. During the planning of the wedding, obviously, I\u2019m sure I had other stuff on my mind. We\u2019re on a date night one night; and she says: \u201cI really think we should help Norman and Shirley move\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI really feel like we\u2019re <em>supposed<\/em> to help Norman and Shirley move.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like: \u201cI don\u2019t really care about Norman and Shirley right now. I\u2019m stressed out of my mind.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like: \u201cWho\u2019s helping somebody? They need to be helping me right now!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m freaking out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI called them; and I was like: \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 Hey, Norman, where are you guys moving again?\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cMiami.\u201d [Laughter] I said, \u201cWhen are you moving?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cJune 6.\u201d\u00a0 I was like: \u201cThat\u2019s too\u2014that\u2019s\u2026\u201d She got herself to Miami. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t manipulate \/ I didn\u2019t do anything!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, God was your co-collaborator in this whole deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Honestly, I tell anybody that has a crazy dream: \u201cDo it!\u201d because it makes you fall to your knees; and God has to orchestrate stuff for all of this to happen. There\u2019s no <em>one<\/em> that can pull this off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, what was going to be your best alibi for getting her to\u2014that\u2019s a short word for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>No; I had a bunch of reasons to get her there, because I travelled a lot\u2014travel and spoke. There were churches\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I could say, \u201cHey, have us come speak.\u201d\u00a0 You know, there are many ways to do it; but I hadn\u2019t even gotten there. I was so stressed about everything else. But two months before the wedding, it was her idea to help our friends move. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; so, you had planned that she was going to come in the afternoon of the 6<sup>th<\/sup>; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It turns out it\u2019s not going to be until midnight. You had the next day all mapped out. What was that supposed to look like according to the plan that you had?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>You know, I honestly didn\u2019t have it all figured out. I was\u2014I mean, in hindsight, you have great ideas, and you\u2019re polished, and you\u2019re ready to go. But I didn\u2019t have a handbook. I was freaking out\u2014like: \u201cAre you going to propose at nine?\u00a0 Is it going to be eight?\u00a0 Is it going to be ten?\u201d\u00a0 I was like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You didn\u2019t have a schedule \/ an agenda for the day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t\u2014no; I mean, I didn\u2019t know how long it would take for her to do her hair and for the makeup artist to do that. I mean, it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014there were a <em>lot<\/em> of moving parts. And then, the storm came through\u2014the storm came through on Friday. I knew Saturday was going to be a rough day. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You actually flew her hairdresser in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>\u2014which is her sister; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes\u2014to do the hair and the makeup. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>The makeup artist was a different person\u2014but yes. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>He knows the details now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He does. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>He knows the difference because he had to fly them in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Amanda, you get there at midnight on the 6<sup>th<\/sup> on a delayed flight. It\u2019s been stressful\u2014it\u2019s like you\u2019re tired. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you have no idea what\u2019s happening the next day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Well, I was flying with two girls\u2014one that was also going to help move and the actual girl, Shirley, who was moving. When our flight got cancelled, they just had this look of sheer panic on their face; and I\u2019m fine. I\u2019m drinking a latte, walking through the airport. I mean, who wants to hurry up and go help somebody move?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m calling Ryan and saying, \u201cHey, our flight\u2019s cancelled.\u201d\u00a0 He already knew; because the girls were texting him, letting him know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is doing everything he can to get me on another flight with a different airline. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt one point, we actually had to split up\u2014myself and the two other girls. I\u2019m telling them: \u201cI don\u2019t want to split up with you guys. I\u2019ll stay here with you, and we can just all fly out tomorrow. It\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d\u00a0 And they\u2019re like: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I just feel better if you were there. Then, I can get myself there; but if you\u2019re there, it would take a lot of stress off of me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the back of my mind, I thought, \u201cIs she pushing me this way because Ryan is going to propose today?\u201d\u00a0 As soon as that thought clicked in my head, I said: \u201cOkay, girl. I\u2019ll see you later\u2014I\u2019ll see you in Miami!\u00a0 Let me go catch this flight real quick.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, yes; I showed up around midnight. He picked me up from the airport. I was so happy to see him\u2014hadn\u2019t seen him in about a week. I just thought, \u201cMaybe, this is the week I get proposed to.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>And that\u2019s how I ended the night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And so, Ryan, back to her mom\u2014had she taken a chill pill?\u2014because she was against this day occurring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>No; there was no chill pill. What was interesting is\u2014when you do a surprise wedding\u2014for those listeners who are thinking about it \/ praying about it\u2014[Laughter]\u2014you can\u2019t send out invitations; because if you send out invitations, what if she walks into one of their houses and sees it on a coffee table \/ on the refrigerator?\u00a0 That\u2019s a bad sign. If she sees that she\u2019s invited to her own surprise wedding\u2014that kind of ruins it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Save the dates don\u2019t work here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; you\u2019re playing by different rules. I had tried to reach back out to her [mother]. I reached out to counsel\u2014pastors\u2014and just said: \u201cHey, here\u2019s what I\u2019m thinking. Maybe, we do need more time.\u201d\u00a0 You know, you take <em>heed<\/em> to wise counsel\u2014you don\u2019t just think, \u201cEverybody else is just an idiot, and I\u2019m just a genius.\u201d You ask questions: \u201cIs there merit in this?\u201d\u00a0 After praying about it, talking with others about it, it was like, \u201cNo; move forward.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to ask Amanda\u2014I said, \u201cHey, is it a deal-breaker if Mom doesn\u2019t come to our wedding?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said: \u201cI\u2019m 50\/50. I\u2019m okay if she is, and I understand if she\u2019s not.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay!\u201d\u00a0 Well, I sent out the invitation via email and just said, \u201cHey, urgent message: \u2018Delete this upon receipt,\u2019\u201d type of deal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That was the next communication you had with her mom?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; I tried to call her a bunch of times, and she was busy. So, I just sent the invitation; and I sent a pretty stern email that said a lot\u2014I just said: \u201cHey, I love Jesus with all my heart; and I also love your daughter. On June 7, 2013, I\u2019m going to marry her. You are more than welcome to come. I\u2019ll fly you there\u2014you and your husband \/ your family\u2014whatever you need.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she called, obviously\u2014caught her attention a little bit. You know, we got into a debate about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was one of the coolest debates I\u2019ve ever had. Here\u2019s how the debate ended\u2014it ended with: \u201cWell, you know what?\u00a0 Ryan, I will be at this wedding, but I\u2019m not giving you my blessing. I\u2019ll be at the wedding, but I won\u2019t be there with my blessing.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to pray that God changes your heart on that.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to pray that God changes your heart.\u201d Then, she said something I\u2019ll never forget\u2014she said: \u201cWell, Ryan, we both serve a God of miracles. One way or another, He is going to have to do one for me to have a blessing at your wedding.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike I said\u2014three weeks before our wedding, Amanda graduated from college. Her mother comes down to Dallas; and of course, I pick her up and host her. We\u2019re out to eat\u2014all of that. She gets to see me a little bit more; and obviously, I have an iPad full of pictures of venues, and food, and everything that you want to show your future mother-in-law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou want her to be excited about this; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI show her everything\u2014we kind of go through the trip. It was copacetic, so to speak. We\u2019re driving her to the airport to go home\u2014she says, \u201cSo, Ryan, when are we going to see you next?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat in the world?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is with Amanda in the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Amanda\u2019s in the car; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I\u2019m looking in the rearview mirror\u2014like: \u201cSee you next?\u00a0 You know I\u2019m going to see you in like two weeks at the wedding.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m just like, \u201cIs she trying to spill the\u2026\u201d and she\u2019s trying to hint, \u201cI\u2019m in.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Aw!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>I wasn\u2019t getting it\u2014I was like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were thinking the worst!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019m like: \u201cI\u2019m preaching in Chicago in July. I guess we\u2019ll see you then.\u201d\u00a0 She\u2019s like: \u201cOh, okay. That\u2019s cool.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I was like: \u201cOkay; she\u2019s acting super weird. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we pulled the bags out of the car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe hugs me goodbye, and she holds me tight. She\u2019s like, \u201cHey; hey\u2026\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cYes?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou have my blessing, Ryan.\u201d\u00a0 What was crazy is\u2014the day before, I was praying for a miracle. It was cool to see things come full circle. Literally, since that day, we\u2019ve been tight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; June 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u2014you went to bed very early on June 7, because you got to the airport at midnight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>When he picks you up the next morning, and he\u2019s taking you to go get married, did you sense anything was going on in him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>He picked me up from the hotel, and he had a camera guy with him. He had told me that we were there to help our friends move, but they were also youth pastors. So, we were going to be filming a video for the youth service. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI figured that that was who that was; but he was a little\u2014I could see a little spark in his eye. He just kind of looked like he was trying to hold back on being really excited. I figured we were going to get engaged that day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the other thing, too, is that we had never said, \u201cI love you,\u201d to one another. So, we\u2019re in the car\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Whoa, whoa, whoa!\u2014five years you\u2019ve been dating?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I mean, you\u2019ve told us earlier that in that five-year period, you had maintained purity and not slept together. You hadn\u2019t said, \u201cI love you,\u201d to one another?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>We hadn\u2019t \/ we hadn\u2019t. And it wasn\u2019t something that we\u2014when we first started dating had set out and said, \u201cOkay, we\u2019re not going to say this word.\u201d\u00a0 It was just kind of\u2014it kind of just happened. I think the other thing, too, is we\u2014actually, on our YouTube documentary, people had the most issues with us not saying, \u201cI love you,\u201d for five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMore than anything else in the documentary, that\u2019s the one thing that they had commented on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s because we have this fairytale idea of\u2014you know, you say it in the rain after a really great date; and it\u2019s a picturesque kind of scene\u2014but I mean, if you really get to the core of it \/ if you really bring the Bible into this, it\u2019s <em>so<\/em> much more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I wanted to ask Ryan here. Ryan, you guys were on a spiritual mission, as a couple, who were dating. It wasn\u2019t as though God was asked to show up at the wedding and that\u2019s the first time He\u2019s been in the relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>You know, we sat with a couple a couple of days ago. We started to ask them about what they wanted their marriage to look like. They couldn\u2019t answer the question\u2014they struggled: \u201cI want her to cook.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOkay. What else you got?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] \u201cYou know, it\u2019s like\u2014well, if we could go to the gym together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s like they didn\u2019t have the vernacular. I asked them a question\u2014I said, \u201cHave you ever seen a successful marriage?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s 33\u2014his parents divorced\u2014dad left when he was eight. He said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cEvery couple I know has gotten divorced.\u201d\u00a0 He goes: \u201cAnd my uncle, who is a pastor\u2014he was married 25 years. He\u2019s in the middle of a divorce right now. So, I\u2019ve never seen it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor a lot of people, I think they are almost stuck; because they don\u2019t have a model. It\u2019s like asking a person to go be good at basketball\u2014but doesn\u2019t watch the NBA \/ doesn\u2019t watch college\u2014in fact, \u201cDon\u2019t watch it anywhere\u2014just go figure it out. Just go in the gym and be awesome.\u201d\u00a0 How are they going to do that if they don\u2019t have a <em>model<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, for me and Amanda, we chose to surround ourselves with mentors \/ around other people. We said: \u201cWe want this\u2014this is how we want our home to feel like. We want people to walk in and feel the presence of God in our home.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not going to happen on accident. That\u2019s not going to happen\u2014that\u2019s not going to start when we get married. If I don\u2019t invite the presence of God into my apartment when I\u2019m by myself, what makes me think it\u2019s going to happen when I get married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Marriage was designed by God for a husband and a wife to reflect the transcendent nature of Almighty God to a fallen planet. A part of reflecting who God is, I believe, is to be on His mission for your lives. I feel that that question that you asked that young couple ought to be asked of every young couple that are getting married today; because they need to know\u2014not only what it is we feel for one another\u2014but \u201cWhat are we about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan: <\/strong>Absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cWhere are we going?
