I would love a stress-free wedding. I would love to get engaged and married on the same day.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, October 31<sup>st<\/sup>. The sad thing is\u2014the article does not have the story we\u2019re going to hear today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This may be the story of this decade.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Maybe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. We have a pair of courageous, young Christian leaders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or foolish\u2014is it courageous or foolish? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think they\u2019re courageous. I think they\u2019re courageous. Ryan and Amanda Leak join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Amanda, Ryan welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> We\u2019re happy to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> We are very happy to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m just going to cut to the chase. Ryan, I want you to tell our listeners what you did to propose to Amanda Roman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> \u2014now, Leak; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Amanda Roman\u2014you\u2019d been dating for how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> We dated for about five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; that\u2019s enough preliminary discussion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Explain what happened on a day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Okay; so three years into us dating, I overhear her say to a friend, \u201cI think it\u2019d be cool to get engaged and married on the same day.\u201d Now, at the time, I was cooking or making some pancakes. She was in the living room with a friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a Saturday afternoon\u2014we were just hanging out. I don\u2019t really even remember all of those details\u2014I just remember, in the kitchen, looking up, going, \u201cWhat in the world does that mean?\u201d I can\u2019t talk to her about it, because obviously proposals are meant to be a surprise. So does that mean I would have to plan the wedding? I just started investigating what it would it take to pull off a surprise wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually\u2014you said you went on recon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> I did. I did some recon work. I began investigating, through her friends, what she would want in a wedding. I was also a pretty good friend in college\u2014so I was in 11 weddings during this time. Weddings were a normal conversation. Obviously, we wanted to get married to each other; so we were talking marriage and wedding\u2014what we would want in a day in the future\u2014way future\u2014but every time we talked, I was planning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why so far in the future, by the way? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> She was in college. We wanted to wait until she graduated. She actually graduated college three weeks before we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I wanted to ask you about that because I dated my wife for four years. We were at the outer limits of her patience at the end of four years; okay. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She drew a line in the sand and said, \u201cBuddy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cnow or never.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cchucker [uncertain of spelling] up to the table.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t do that\u2014she wrote a letter and said, \u201cI think I\u2019ve found somebody who\u2019s more interested than you.\u201d And I went [stuttering]: \u201cWhat; what; what?\u201d [Laughter] But that\u2019s another story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> I want to hear that story. Wow! That\u2019s amazing! Wait a minute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But I just wondered about the whole five-year thing, because five years is a long time to date somebody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> It is. It is a long time. I was guilty of seeing girls getting engaged on Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and kind of giving Ryan the elbow sometimes, \u201cWhen\u2019s that going to happen for us?\u201d But I think for us\u2014we were just\u2014we actually were really content with being single at first, so we didn\u2019t really feel we were in a <em>rush<\/em> to get married. But we kind of felt like that was the next step to be taken.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So in this five-year window\u2014at the end of the window, when he is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got to interrupt you though, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This sounds <em>horribly<\/em> invasive to say this early in the broadcast\u2014but you dated for five years, but you weren\u2019t sleeping with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Not at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> See, I think a lot of couples are cohabiting and think nothing of it today, because they\u2019ve lost the standard of morality that the Bible spells out. The reason they delay marriage is they are already participating in some of the benefits of the relationship. You guys weren\u2019t doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> No; we weren\u2019t\u2014nope. That was a decision we made waaaay before we started dating. I think that\u2019s important too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; but you know a lot of couples make that decision way before they start dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Three years in, four years in, five years in\u2014that gets really <em>hard<\/em>. That had to be hard; wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; it was hard, but we decided to just make our relationship not about sitting around watching Netflix and watching movies. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe decided just that we were going to be an <em>active<\/em> couple\u2014and that sometimes you can get focused on what you\u2019re against instead of what you\u2019re for. Sometimes, you\u2019re\u2014as a \u201cpure couple\u201d\u2014you are carrying around this badge of virginity. It\u2019s just like [others saying]: \u201cWhoa! Whoa! We\u2019re not a virgin.\u201d \u201cWell what are you? I know what you\u2019re <em>not<\/em>, but what are you doing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we decided that we wanted to make our relationship about generosity. We wanted to be so busy giving to other people of our time and of our resources. Before we were married, we said, \u201cWe want this to be the theme of our family.\u201d We decided to start taking portions of our income\u2014above what we give in church\u2014to just give away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Like a married couple?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Like a married couple. We decided to start practicing what we wanted our marriage to look like. I thought: \u201cThis isn\u2019t the worst thing that can happen. What is the worst thing that could happen? We give to a widow, and she gets to pay a bill a month. Let\u2019s say we break up: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2019Oh, man! We shouldn\u2019t have given that to that lady!\u2019\u201d\u2014we wouldn\u2019t say that. [Laughter] We\u2019ve had bigger regrets; you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s hard for millennials and for people that are dating for a long time to have a central focus. Ours did\u2014we felt like we were on a mission from the beginning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s what I wanted to point out. You guys were a bicycle built for two. You weren\u2019t in a committed covenant relationship yet\u2014called marriage\u2014but you were already heading in a direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s where I want to go back to\u2014the direction\u2014because, again, after five years, thinking, \u201cThis could come some time.\u201d I know a lot of girls\u2014who any time they are going to be with their boyfriend\u2014they\u2019re wondering, \u201cI wonder if tonight he\u2019s going to ask me.\u201d Had that started to factor into your thinking? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to lie\u2014a little bit \/ yes; a little bit it popped into my head. [Laughter] But like Ryan said\u2014I wanted to finish school first. I was working, full time \/ going to school, full time\u2014so I was hoping he would propose <em>soon<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had no idea my boyfriend was planning a wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No idea? There were <em>no<\/em> tell-tell sign?\u2014he kept the whole thing covert.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Not only that\u2014but had my <em>entire<\/em> family and all of my friends in on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to find out about that, but I want to go back to when you said it. Were you hinting at him, flipping the pancakes in the other room? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when she said, \u201cI\u2019d like to get engaged and married on the same day\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I just went up a level in volume?\u2014no; I was actually chatting. We were over at his house\u2014we had a few friends over. One of them was a wedding planner\/wedding coordinator. She was telling me about how much\u2014how stressful weddings are. She said, \u201cYou think they\u2019re these fabulous things when you\u2019re a wedding planner\u2014that, you know, it\u2019s like this movie-like job\u2014but you end up\u2014the bride is so upset at you, and you\u2019re in a closet somewhere trying to eat a pretzel; because you don\u2019t have any energy.\u201d [Laughter] She said, \u201cYou think it\u2019s a dream, and it is hard work.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just popped in my head; and I said: \u201cYou know what? I would love a stress-free wedding. I would love to get engaged and married on the same day.\u201d And that was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the pancake-flipper in the other room goes, \u201cI heard that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So that was all the thought you had given to that statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> About a week later, I thought it over again. Now, in my mind\u2014I\u2019m picturing us going somewhere, him proposing, and then we just put together a wedding\u2014take my girls to a store, pick out a cute dress, play whatever is on our iPod<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Las Vegas wedding chapel\u2014drive-thru kind of thing? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Not quite Las Vegas!\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but just something really spontaneous. I have a big Puerto Rican family\u2014so we can make anything a party. I just figured: \u201cLess stress for me. Yes; let\u2019s just do it that way.\u201d I never told him that, but I definitely started telling some of my friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Interesting. Okay; back to the recon work that you were doing, Ryan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> That recon work was serious, because she had a lot of requests. Obviously, if you\u2019re going to do a surprise wedding, you\u2019ve got to do it right. You know, you can\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It can\u2019t be three-fourths of a surprise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Right\u2014it\u2019s got\u2014you\u2019re all in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s got to be a sting; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> She had mentioned that she wanted to get married in San Diego on a beach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughter] She\u2014she\u2014she\u2014I\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m just thinking, \u201cThis is\u2014we just went from Las Vegas wedding chapel to San Diego on a beach.\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou\u2019ve got your work cut out for you, Bro!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Oh yes. I had a friend that worked at a large church in San Diego. I said, \u201cHey, can I come consult you for free?\u201d He said, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d I said, \u201cI need a legitimate excuse to come to San Diego so I can check out wedding venues.\u201d He said, \u201cYes; we actually need some help with small groups.\u201d [Laughter] I went there \/ consulted for a day. I told Amanda, \u201cHey I\u2019m going to San Diego.\u201d I travel, doing consulting; so that was very normal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget\u2014I went to this wedding venue on the beach in San Diego. I said, \u201cHey I need to speak to your wedding coordinator.\u201d She said, \u201cOkay; so you\u2019re thinking about getting married\u2014when?\u201d I said, \u201cI\u2019m not sure.\u201d She said, \u201cOkay; where\u2019s your fianc\u00e9e?\u201d I said, \u201cWell I don\u2019t have one yet.\u201d She\u2019s like, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, actually, I\u2019m going to propose the day of the wedding.\u201d She was like: \u201cWhat?! What are you\u2026\u201d She couldn\u2019t get it in her brain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time, I couldn\u2019t really get it in my brain. I was like, \u201cMaybe this is crazy.\u201d So then I went to the second venue\u2014told her the exact same story. This girl got up and started running around the couch. She was like: \u201cThis is the best thing I\u2019ve ever heard in my entire life! We\u2019re going to make it happen.\u201d I was [hesitant], \u201cOkay.\u201d [Laughter] Emotions are just <em>everywhere<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m on the phone with her and she said, \u201cHey Ryan, you know what I was thinking?\u201d I was like, \u201cWhat?\u201d She was like, \u201cI think it would be really cool to get married on a beach in Puerto Rico.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I\u2019m a woman! We change our mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re talking like dream fantasy wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t <em>know<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you realize you had pulled the pin of a grenade and just rolled it in to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> No; that\u2019s not the only time either. That happened on several occasions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So did you move it to Hawaii? Where was the next location you chose?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I think, after that\u2014probably about the <em>fourth<\/em> time that I changed my mind\u2014he said: \u201cYou know what? We\u2019re doing it in Miami. She\u2019s going to just have to deal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; I ended up just having to make a call. I just\u2014and I knew that, if we did it in Hollywood, Florida, she wouldn\u2019t expect it; because that wasn\u2019t on the list. So you just had to make decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But there was a gamble\u2014there was a bit of a gamble in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> The whole thing\u2019s a gamble\u2014I mean, you\u2019re proposing! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She might say, \u201cNo.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were pretty sure this was not a girl that would say, \u201cNo,\u201d to you if you proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; I knew she would agree to marry me. That does not mean she would agree to marry me <em>that<\/em> day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Whether what she said over pancakes a few years ago was serious or not; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Right. What if she was like, \u201cWell that was two years ago\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You also had just one minor detail that we haven\u2019t talked about here. In my mind, I figured, \u201cHow\u2019s he going to negotiate that?\u201d\u2014that was your [Amanda\u2019s] mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Oh yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t like him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> She\u2014no! She didn\u2019t. [Laughter] I\u2019m trying to sugar coat it\u2014no; she didn\u2019t. I was raised by a single mom\u2014so she kind of played mom and dad for us, growing up. She was <em>extremely<\/em> overprotective and didn\u2019t want to see my life go down the same road that hers had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe gave Ryan a <em>very<\/em> hard time when it came to dating me. Then, he shows up to her house one day to ask her blessing\u2014not just to get engaged\u2014but also to get married on the same day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe had a hard time with that; but yes, we were able to work through it. It actually was one of the best parts of our story\u2014I would say\u2014is just seeing the kind of full circle that happened in my mom\u2019s heart towards Ryan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So Ryan, were you nervous when you went to meet with her to ask for her daughter\u2019s hand in marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And if you weren\u2019t, you\u2019re a fool\u2014I\u2019m just telling you right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> It\u2019s a tough conversation to go to a mom and say, \u201cCan I marry your daughter?\u201d\u2014 and she\u2019s like, \u201cWell I\u2019m not so sure,\u201d\u2014\u201cWell, I already planned a wedding, and she doesn\u2019t know about it. You can\u2019t tell her.\u201d The layers of complications there are\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you leave that day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> O, man; yes\u2014I mean, you think about all the plans of a surprise wedding and all the things that can go wrong. But the number one thing that can go wrong\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no; I don\u2019t have any idea what a surprise wedding\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and what it looks like when it goes wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I don\u2019t have any idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Well, what could go wrong with a regular wedding? I mean, think about catering, think about chairs, think about rentals, you think about the food, you think about the cake, the dress. You think about all of those details that you have to, if you\u2019re planning a wedding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the biggest thing in this particular scenario is\u2014all it takes is <em>you<\/em> slipping and telling her. Every person in her world that loves her deeply has the biggest secret of their <em>life<\/em>\u2014you\u2019re one friend away from it being completely over. I\u2019m threatening people every <em>day<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can see one friend, just going, \u201cI am so excited!\u201d because, every time they see you, that\u2019s what they\u2019re thinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they\u2019ve got to bite their tongue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I\u2019m thinking\u2014the one thing that can go wrong is\u2014having a man plan a wedding by himself\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because I\u2019m thinking, \u201cIf somebody put me in charge of planning a wedding, it would turn out to be the world\u2019s worst wedding.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; I had some <em>really<\/em> great friends, and her friends and family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pulled them in the office the first day that she had even mentioned it\u2014I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019ve got something crazy. Just tell me what I need to\u2026\u201d Their eyes just lit up; and they\u2019re like, \u201cWe\u2019re going to help\u2014we\u2019re going to help you do this.\u201d It was a team effort\u2014it wasn\u2019t a <em>just me<\/em> thing at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So Amanda, back to Bob\u2019s point\u2014not a hint? \/ not a slip?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Not a hint, in retrospect, I think people were acting very funny around me\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but no! Even my seven-year-old niece was in the wedding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>I visited my sister and saw her. I said, \u201cLele, one day, when I get married, will you be my flower girl?\u201d She looked at me and said, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll love that!\u201d She had her flower-girl dress <em>upstairs<\/em> in her room, already planned\u2014hair, bow tie, shoes\u2014the whole nine. Even the seven-year-old was in on it. They were just holding their tongue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So miracles do still happen; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> That was the biggest miracle\u2014when talking with her mother, you\u2019re leaving obviously dejected. Every person you tell is floored: \u201cThis is going to be amazing,\u201d or \u201cMaybe not; but it\u2019s going to be a sight to see if she says, \u2018No,\u2019 or \u2018Yes.\u2019 No matter what happens\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cI want to be there!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThis is going to be entertaining.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThis is reality TV no matter <em>what<\/em> happens.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, one minor detail that I left out is that you had been in a career of media and film making. You\u2019re kind of all over the whole concept of story to begin with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; honestly, I never wanted to have this extravagant love story or that I needed to be famous or anything. I just wanted her to be happy. I wanted her to have what she wanted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; now wait a second. I just want to pick up the book you guys wrote. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s called <em>The One: An Amazing <\/em>Love<em> Story Starts with You<\/em>. So you ended up being a part of one; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Absolutely, but it starts with <em>you<\/em>\u2014you being the person that you would want to be with. You can\u2019t expect somebody else to just be awesome and that they\u2019re going to love you if you\u2019re not\u2014like you can\u2019t expect, \u201cOkay; I want to marry a wealthy person\u201d; but you don\u2019t handle your finances well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts with <em>you<\/em>: \u201cI want to be with someone who\u2019s driven,\u201d\u2014\u201cAre you driven? If he\u2019s driven and you\u2019re not, why would he want to marry you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cI want to marry a man of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; \u201cThen you\u2019ve got to be a woman of God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> It goes down a line. So\u2014but we never\u2014I didn\u2019t need it to be extravagant. There were several times\u2014just because of the <em>stress<\/em> of planning a surprise wedding\u2014where I asked her\u2014I said: \u201cHey, how would you feel just eloping? Like\u2014let\u2019s just go to a courthouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to be with you. I don\u2019t need a viral wedding like if\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was like: \u201cAw! I don\u2019t know.\u201d She was like, \u201cObviously, I want to be with you; but I think I would miss having a day where my family was there. I think I would regret that.\u201d I went, \u201cOkay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So wait. If she had said\u2014how would\u2014if she said, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> If she said, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014would it have been the courthouse that afternoon? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> \u2014it would have been the courthouse\u2014not that afternoon, but probably the next weekend for sure. [Laughter] We would have made it happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you were ready to ditch the wedding dream.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The airplane tickets had not been purchased.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Oh, yes; I mean\u2014obviously, if you watch the video, this didn\u2019t cost me a hundred dollars, you know. This was a <em>pricey<\/em> deal\u2014so for her to go, \u201cWe\u2019re just going to elope,\u201d\u2014 I would have gladly called everybody: \u201cHey, guys; it was a good idea\u2014let\u2019s do it next time. I would love a stress-free wedding. We have a pair of courageous, young Christian leaders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or foolish\u2014is it courageous or foolish? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think they\u2019re courageous. I think they\u2019re courageous. Ryan and Amanda Leak join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Amanda, Ryan welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> We\u2019re happy to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> We are very happy to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m just going to cut to the chase. Ryan, I want you to tell our listeners what you did to propose to Amanda Roman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> \u2014now, Leak; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Amanda Roman\u2014you\u2019d been dating for how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> We dated for about five years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; that\u2019s enough preliminary discussion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Explain what happened on a day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Okay; so three years into us dating, I overhear her say to a friend, \u201cI think it\u2019d be cool to get engaged and married on the same day.\u201d Now, at the time, I was cooking or making some pancakes. She was in the living room with a friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a Saturday afternoon\u2014we were just hanging out. I don\u2019t really even remember all of those details\u2014I just remember, in the kitchen, looking up, going, \u201cWhat in the world does that mean?\u201d I can\u2019t talk to her about it, because obviously proposals are meant to be a surprise. So does that mean I would have to plan the wedding? I just started investigating what it would it take to pull off a surprise wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You actually\u2014you said you went on recon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> I did. I did some recon work. I began investigating, through her friends, what she would want in a wedding. I was also a pretty good friend in college\u2014so I was in 11 weddings during this time. Weddings were a normal conversation. Obviously, we wanted to get married to each other; so we were talking marriage and wedding\u2014what we would want in a day in the future\u2014way future\u2014but every time we talked, I was planning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why so far in the future, by the way? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> She was in college. We wanted to wait until she graduated. She actually graduated college three weeks before we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I wanted to ask you about that because I dated my wife for four years. We were at the outer limits of her patience at the end of four years; okay. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She drew a line in the sand and said, \u201cBuddy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cnow or never.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cchucker [uncertain of spelling] up to the table.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t do that\u2014she wrote a letter and said, \u201cI think I\u2019ve found somebody who\u2019s more interested than you.\u201d And I went [stuttering]: \u201cWhat; what; what?\u201d [Laughter] But that\u2019s another story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> I want to hear that story. Wow! That\u2019s amazing! Wait a minute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Bob:<\/strong> But I just wondered about the whole five-year thing, because five years is a long time to date somebody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> It is. It is a long time. I was guilty of seeing girls getting engaged on Instagram<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and kind of giving Ryan the elbow sometimes, \u201cWhen\u2019s that going to happen for us?\u201d But I think for us\u2014we were just\u2014we actually were really content with being single at first, so we didn\u2019t really feel we were in a <em>rush<\/em> to get married. But we kind of felt like that was the next step to be taken.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So in this five-year window\u2014at the end of the window, when he is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got to interrupt you though, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This sounds <em>horribly<\/em> invasive to say this early in the broadcast\u2014but you dated for five years, but you weren\u2019t sleeping with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Not at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> See, I think a lot of couples are cohabiting and think nothing of it today, because they\u2019ve lost the standard of morality that the Bible spells out. The reason they delay marriage is they are already participating in some of the benefits of the relationship. You guys weren\u2019t doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> No; we weren\u2019t\u2014nope. That was a decision we made waaaay before we started dating. I think that\u2019s important too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; but you know a lot of couples make that decision way before they start dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Three years in, four years in, five years in\u2014that gets really <em>hard<\/em>. That had to be hard; wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; it was hard, but we decided to just make our relationship not about sitting around watching Netflix and watching movies. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe decided just that we were going to be an <em>active<\/em> couple\u2014and that sometimes you can get focused on what you\u2019re against instead of what you\u2019re for. Sometimes, you\u2019re\u2014as a \u201cpure couple\u201d\u2014you are carrying around this badge of virginity. It\u2019s just like [others saying]: \u201cWhoa! Whoa! We\u2019re not a virgin.\u201d \u201cWell what are you? I know what you\u2019re <em>not<\/em>, but what are you doing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we decided that we wanted to make our relationship about generosity. We wanted to be so busy giving to other people of our time and of our resources. Before we were married, we said, \u201cWe want this to be the theme of our family.\u201d We decided to start taking portions of our income\u2014above what we give in church\u2014to just give away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Like a married couple?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Like a married couple. We decided to start practicing what we wanted our marriage to look like. I thought: \u201cThis isn\u2019t the worst thing that can happen. What is the worst thing that could happen? We give to a widow, and she gets to pay a bill a month. Let\u2019s say we break up: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201c\u2019Oh, man! We shouldn\u2019t have given that to that lady!\u2019\u201d\u2014we wouldn\u2019t say that. [Laughter] We\u2019ve had bigger regrets; you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s hard for millennials and for people that are dating for a long time to have a central focus. Ours did\u2014we felt like we were on a mission from the beginning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s what I wanted to point out. You guys were a bicycle built for two. You weren\u2019t in a committed covenant relationship yet\u2014called marriage\u2014but you were already heading in a direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s where I want to go back to\u2014the direction\u2014because, again, after five years, thinking, \u201cThis could come some time.\u201d I know a lot of girls\u2014who any time they are going to be with their boyfriend\u2014they\u2019re wondering, \u201cI wonder if tonight he\u2019s going to ask me.\u201d Had that started to factor into your thinking? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I\u2019m not going to lie\u2014a little bit \/ yes; a little bit it popped into my head. [Laughter] But like Ryan said\u2014I wanted to finish school first. I was working, full time \/ going to school, full time\u2014so I was hoping he would propose <em>soon<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had no idea my boyfriend was planning a wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No idea? There were <em>no<\/em> tell-tell sign?\u2014he kept the whole thing covert.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Not only that\u2014but had my <em>entire<\/em> family and all of my friends in on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to find out about that, but I want to go back to when you said it. Were you hinting at him, flipping the pancakes in the other room? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when she said, \u201cI\u2019d like to get engaged and married on the same day\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I just went up a level in volume?\u2014no; I was actually chatting. We were over at his house\u2014we had a few friends over. One of them was a wedding planner\/wedding coordinator. She was telling me about how much\u2014how stressful weddings are. She said, \u201cYou think they\u2019re these fabulous things when you\u2019re a wedding planner\u2014that, you know, it\u2019s like this movie-like job\u2014but you end up\u2014the bride is so upset at you, and you\u2019re in a closet somewhere trying to eat a pretzel; because you don\u2019t have any energy.\u201d [Laughter] She said, \u201cYou think it\u2019s a dream, and it is hard work.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just popped in my head; and I said: \u201cYou know what? I would love a stress-free wedding. I would love to get engaged and married on the same day.\u201d And that was it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the pancake-flipper in the other room goes, \u201cI heard that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So that was all the thought you had given to that statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> About a week later, I thought it over again. Now, in my mind\u2014I\u2019m picturing us going somewhere, him proposing, and then we just put together a wedding\u2014take my girls to a store, pick out a cute dress, play whatever is on our iPod<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Las Vegas wedding chapel\u2014drive-thru kind of thing? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Not quite Las Vegas!\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but just something really spontaneous. I have a big Puerto Rican family\u2014so we can make anything a party. I just figured: \u201cLess stress for me. Yes; let\u2019s just do it that way.\u201d I never told him that, but I definitely started telling some of my friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Interesting. Okay; back to the recon work that you were doing, Ryan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> That recon work was serious, because she had a lot of requests. Obviously, if you\u2019re going to do a surprise wedding, you\u2019ve got to do it right. You know, you can\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It can\u2019t be three-fourths of a surprise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Right\u2014it\u2019s got\u2014you\u2019re all in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s got to be a sting; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> She had mentioned that she wanted to get married in San Diego on a beach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughter] She\u2014she\u2014she\u2014I\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m just thinking, \u201cThis is\u2014we just went from Las Vegas wedding chapel to San Diego on a beach.\u201d I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou\u2019ve got your work cut out for you, Bro!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Oh yes. I had a friend that worked at a large church in San Diego. I said, \u201cHey, can I come consult you for free?\u201d He said, \u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d I said, \u201cI need a legitimate excuse to come to San Diego so I can check out wedding venues.\u201d He said, \u201cYes; we actually need some help with small groups.\u201d [Laughter] I went there \/ consulted for a day. I told Amanda, \u201cHey I\u2019m going to San Diego.\u201d I travel, doing consulting; so that was very normal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget\u2014I went to this wedding venue on the beach in San Diego. I said, \u201cHey I need to speak to your wedding coordinator.\u201d She said, \u201cOkay; so you\u2019re thinking about getting married\u2014when?\u201d I said, \u201cI\u2019m not sure.\u201d She said, \u201cOkay; where\u2019s your fianc\u00e9e?\u201d I said, \u201cWell I don\u2019t have one yet.\u201d She\u2019s like, \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I said, \u201cWell, actually, I\u2019m going to propose the day of the wedding.\u201d She was like: \u201cWhat?! What are you\u2026\u201d She couldn\u2019t get it in her brain. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time, I couldn\u2019t really get it in my brain. I was like, \u201cMaybe this is crazy.\u201d So then I went to the second venue\u2014told her the exact same story. This girl got up and started running around the couch. She was like: \u201cThis is the best thing I\u2019ve ever heard in my entire life! We\u2019re going to make it happen.\u201d I was [hesitant], \u201cOkay.\u201d [Laughter] Emotions are just <em>everywhere<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m on the phone with her and she said, \u201cHey Ryan, you know what I was thinking?\u201d I was like, \u201cWhat?\u201d She was like, \u201cI think it would be really cool to get married on a beach in Puerto Rico.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I\u2019m a woman! We change our mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re talking like dream fantasy wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t <em>know<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you realize you had pulled the pin of a grenade and just rolled it in to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> No; that\u2019s not the only time either. That happened on several occasions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So did you move it to Hawaii? Where was the next location you chose?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> I think, after that\u2014probably about the <em>fourth<\/em> time that I changed my mind\u2014he said: \u201cYou know what? We\u2019re doing it in Miami. She\u2019s going to just have to deal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; I ended up just having to make a call. I just\u2014and I knew that, if we did it in Hollywood, Florida, she wouldn\u2019t expect it; because that wasn\u2019t on the list. So you just had to make decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But there was a gamble\u2014there was a bit of a gamble in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> The whole thing\u2019s a gamble\u2014I mean, you\u2019re proposing! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She might say, \u201cNo.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were pretty sure this was not a girl that would say, \u201cNo,\u201d to you if you proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; I knew she would agree to marry me. That does not mean she would agree to marry me <em>that<\/em> day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Whether what she said over pancakes a few years ago was serious or not; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Right. What if she was like, \u201cWell that was two years ago\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You also had just one minor detail that we haven\u2019t talked about here. In my mind, I figured, \u201cHow\u2019s he going to negotiate that?\u201d\u2014that was your [Amanda\u2019s] mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Oh yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t like him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> She\u2014no! She didn\u2019t. [Laughter] I\u2019m trying to sugar coat it\u2014no; she didn\u2019t. I was raised by a single mom\u2014so she kind of played mom and dad for us, growing up. She was <em>extremely<\/em> overprotective and didn\u2019t want to see my life go down the same road that hers had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe gave Ryan a <em>very<\/em> hard time when it came to dating me. Then, he shows up to her house one day to ask her blessing\u2014not just to get engaged\u2014but also to get married on the same day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe had a hard time with that; but yes, we were able to work through it. It actually was one of the best parts of our story\u2014I would say\u2014is just seeing the kind of full circle that happened in my mom\u2019s heart towards Ryan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So Ryan, were you nervous when you went to meet with her to ask for her daughter\u2019s hand in marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And if you weren\u2019t, you\u2019re a fool\u2014I\u2019m just telling you right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> It\u2019s a tough conversation to go to a mom and say, \u201cCan I marry your daughter?\u201d\u2014 and she\u2019s like, \u201cWell I\u2019m not so sure,\u201d\u2014\u201cWell, I already planned a wedding, and she doesn\u2019t know about it. You can\u2019t tell her.\u201d The layers of complications there are\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How did you leave that day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> O, man; yes\u2014I mean, you think about all the plans of a surprise wedding and all the things that can go wrong. But the number one thing that can go wrong\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no; I don\u2019t have any idea what a surprise wedding\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and what it looks like when it goes wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I don\u2019t have any idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Well, what could go wrong with a regular wedding? I mean, think about catering, think about chairs, think about rentals, you think about the food, you think about the cake, the dress. You think about all of those details that you have to, if you\u2019re planning a wedding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the biggest thing in this particular scenario is\u2014all it takes is <em>you<\/em> slipping and telling her. Every person in her world that loves her deeply has the biggest secret of their <em>life<\/em>\u2014you\u2019re one friend away from it being completely over. I\u2019m threatening people every <em>day<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can see one friend, just going, \u201cI am so excited!\u201d because, every time they see you, that\u2019s what they\u2019re thinking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And they\u2019ve got to bite their tongue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I\u2019m thinking\u2014the one thing that can go wrong is\u2014having a man plan a wedding by himself\u2014[Laughter]\u2014because I\u2019m thinking, \u201cIf somebody put me in charge of planning a wedding, it would turn out to be the world\u2019s worst wedding.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; I had some <em>really<\/em> great friends, and her friends and family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pulled them in the office the first day that she had even mentioned it\u2014I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019ve got something crazy. Just tell me what I need to\u2026\u201d Their eyes just lit up; and they\u2019re like, \u201cWe\u2019re going to help\u2014we\u2019re going to help you do this.\u201d It was a team effort\u2014it wasn\u2019t a <em>just me<\/em> thing at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So Amanda, back to Bob\u2019s point\u2014not a hint? \/ not a slip?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> Not a hint, in retrospect, I think people were acting very funny around me\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but no! Even my seven-year-old niece was in the wedding. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda: <\/strong>I visited my sister and saw her. I said, \u201cLele, one day, when I get married, will you be my flower girl?\u201d She looked at me and said, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll love that!\u201d She had her flower-girl dress <em>upstairs<\/em> in her room, already planned\u2014hair, bow tie, shoes\u2014the whole nine. Even the seven-year-old was in on it. They were just holding their tongue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So miracles do still happen; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> That was the biggest miracle\u2014when talking with her mother, you\u2019re leaving obviously dejected. Every person you tell is floored: \u201cThis is going to be amazing,\u201d or \u201cMaybe not; but it\u2019s going to be a sight to see if she says, \u2018No,\u2019 or \u2018Yes.\u2019 No matter what happens\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cI want to be there!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Amanda:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThis is going to be entertaining.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cThis is reality TV no matter <em>what<\/em> happens.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, one minor detail that I left out is that you had been in a career of media and film making. You\u2019re kind of all over the whole concept of story to begin with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; honestly, I never wanted to have this extravagant love story or that I needed to be famous or anything. I just wanted her to be happy. I wanted her to have what she wanted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; now wait a second. I just want to pick up the book you guys wrote. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s called <em>The One: An Amazing <\/em>Love<em> Story Starts with You<\/em>. So you ended up being a part of one; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Absolutely, but it starts with <em>you<\/em>\u2014you being the person that you would want to be with. You can\u2019t expect somebody else to just be awesome and that they\u2019re going to love you if you\u2019re not\u2014like you can\u2019t expect, \u201cOkay; I want to marry a wealthy person\u201d; but you don\u2019t handle your finances well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt starts with <em>you<\/em>: \u201cI want to be with someone who\u2019s driven,\u201d\u2014\u201cAre you driven? If he\u2019s driven and you\u2019re not, why would he want to marry you?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cI want to marry a man of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Yes; \u201cThen you\u2019ve got to be a woman of God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> It goes down a line. So\u2014but we never\u2014I didn\u2019t need it to be extravagant. There were several times\u2014just because of the <em>stress<\/em> of planning a surprise wedding\u2014where I asked her\u2014I said: \u201cHey, how would you feel just eloping? Like\u2014let\u2019s just go to a courthouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to be with you. I don\u2019t need a viral wedding like if\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was like: \u201cAw! I don\u2019t know.\u201d She was like, \u201cObviously, I want to be with you; but I think I would miss having a day where my family was there. I think I would regret that.\u201d I went, \u201cOkay.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So wait. If she had said\u2014how would\u2014if she said, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> If she said, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014would it have been the courthouse that afternoon? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> \u2014it would have been the courthouse\u2014not that afternoon, but probably the next weekend for sure. [Laughter] We would have made it happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you were ready to ditch the wedding dream.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The airplane tickets had not been purchased.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ryan:<\/strong> Oh, yes; I mean\u2014obviously, if you watch the video, this didn\u2019t cost me a hundred dollars, you know. This was a <em>pricey<\/em> deal\u2014so for her to go, \u201cWe\u2019re just going to elope,\u201d\u2014 I would have gladly called everybody: \u201cHey, guys; it was a good idea\u2014let\u2019s do it next time.
