That\u2019s exactly what Steven Curtis Chapman faced, not long ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> I literally called a counselor\u2014a lady who\u2019d kind of been walking with us and encouraging us\u2014and I just said, \u201cYou know, it just seems like a really bad plan that God has to put us in front of people, night after night. We\u2019re as broken as we\u2019ve ever been.\u201d And she said, \u201cIf you can walk out there together, can that be enough?\u201d I get emotional thinking about it. [Emotion in voice] I finally had to come to a place to say, \u201cYes; that\u2019s enough.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 28<sup>th<\/sup>. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever told him where he fits on your list of, you know, top ten favorite Christian recording artists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever told <em>you<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Maybe we should just keep that between us then? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think maybe we should! [Laughter] But Steven Curtis Chapman does join us again here on the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSteven\u2014I want to talk about Steven and Mary Beth for a moment. She\u2019s not here; so we can\u2019t get the straight scoop since she\u2019s not here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; right! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But as I kind of look at your life, Steven\u2014and I\u2019ve only used this illustration with one other person\u2014when I interviewed Pat Summerall, the great sportscaster for, I think, over 50 years. I compared his life to four quarters. Clearly, when we interviewed him, he was in the fourth quarter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So I look at your life\u2014and I know you pretty well\u2014so I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYes; I can see, kind of, four quarters in Steven\u2019s life too.\u201d The first quarter was growing up and all the lessons that he had to learn in starting out a career\u2014a lot of, probably, eating humble pie in the midst of that to be able to rise to stardom within the Christian community and become the leading all-time singer in terms of number of albums sold \/ number one singles hits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s astounding\u2014some of the things\u2014five Grammies\u2014all of those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019d be your second quarter\u2014when you were on a roll. I kind of picture your third quarter, Steven, starting with the death of your daughter eight years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I still think you\u2019re in the third quarter. You\u2019ve just released a new album about <em>Worship<\/em> a<em>nd Believe.<\/em> It comes out of kind of the beginning of the third quarter. What I want to ask you is: \u201cHow are you, as a man\u2014because you\u2019ve seen your career soar with tens of thousands of people showing up to your concerts and best-selling albums and singles; and now, because of digital, that is all turned upside down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re not in the fourth quarter yet; but I want to ask you: \u201cHow are you looking at the fourth quarter, as a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, the word, \u201cgratitude,\u201d is the one that keeps coming back\u2014to live with a heart that is grateful as you look at amazing opportunities that God has given you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it\u2019s not even about significance\u2014you\u2019ve had all of this success. You know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> \u2014something that a lot of men deal with that: \u201cWhat does it mean to have that significance?\u201d But I just think, for me, you know\u2014more and more, living in a place of just being grateful for all that God has done, and yet all that He\u2019s still doing, and recognizing that His economy is so very different than ours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we equate so much of what we do\u2014especially guys, like us\u2014that God has placed us in a ministry and in a place of significance with what we\u2019ve said, or what we\u2019ve written, or what we\u2019ve sung\u2014that kind of thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust because those numbers\u2014you know, there\u2019s this automatic thing of: \u201cBoy, God\u2019s really blessing that ministry; because look how it has grown. Look how it\u2019s blowing up. Look how many people are listening, or buying the records, or coming to the concerts,\u201d or whatever. We know it\u2014you know, we\u2019ve said it to each other, even when we\u2019re in those moments of the heights\u2014you know, soaring into the heights\u2014that: \u201cHey, God isn\u2019t impressed with this. God works just as much through, you know, a missionary sitting somewhere in the middle of Africa with 12 people gathered around, sharing the gospel, as He is with 12,000 people in an arena somewhere.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe know all those things in our head, but really believing it and getting to a place of saying: \u201cGod, I want to be faithful in whatever season that is \/ in whatever quarter I\u2019m in. I want to keep believing what\u2019s most true about what You say about me,\u201d because it is hard not to equate our significance \/ our worth with, you know: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow well\u2026\u201d or \u201cHow many records are we selling?\u201d \u201cHow many concert tickets are people buying to come hear what I have to say?\u201d Does it still matter as much, you know, now that I\u2019m saying it, you know, 25 years\/30 years later?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe truth is, you know\u2014and I tell this to Mary Beth sometimes\u2014you know: \u201cSweetheart, I believe the fact that we can stand here together on stage or\u2014you know, on a stage figuratively, whether or not we\u2019re literally on a stage \/ but just with our lives being sort of on the stage\u2014that communicates something, now at 31 years of marriage, having walked through what we have. Being in this quarter that we\u2019re in \/ if it\u2019s third quarter, and still showing up\u2014there\u2019s something just about the fact that we\u2019re standing there together that communicates something.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s how we greeted one another just a few minutes ago\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014when we said, \u201cHi,\u201d back in my office before we came in the studio. You just came in and said, \u201cYou\u2019re still here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cYou\u2019re still standing!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cSo am I! Let\u2019s embrace!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s good! Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know: \u201cWe haven\u2019t quit.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And really, there is no retirement. The whole concept of retirement came from withdrawal, for a brief period of time, from the front lines of battle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to \u201cretire\u201d was to regain your perspective, and freshen your soul, and get some physical rest to go back into battle!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I love the quote by Winston Churchill\u2014he said, \u201cOn the plains of hesitation bleach the bones of those who sat down to rest and, while resting, died.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I love that because God made us for battle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you look\u2014and we don\u2019t know how long we have\u2014you may have six quarters yet, Steven. [Laughter] You\u2019re like the Energizer<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bunny! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as you look at the fourth quarter in your life, how do you envision yourself being used by God if He gives you the grace and the health to be able to do it? I hear you describing a bit of a statesman for Jesus Christ\u2014just use the influence you\u2019ve been given, as an artist \/ as someone who has been through some tough times\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to just continue to represent Christ. You\u2019re not withdrawing, I know, because we tried to get you here a few months ago back for our 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary celebration; and you were too busy. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> I know; I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Of course, we called too late too! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, it is still a busy season in that, but it is\u2014you know, you\u2019re absolutely right. It\u2019s recognizing, I think, at every season, there\u2019s something so significant about that season\u2014about what you can communicate \/ what you can share. I mean, there\u2019s an authority\u2014and, at this point, I\u2019ve had some brothers around me that encourage me in that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they say, \u201cYou know, there are things that you can only say now, at this point in your life, having walked through what you\u2019ve walked through.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Beth and I are talking about a season of, you know, more ministry together. Maybe we do\u2014you know, we would love to get to do things with you guys\u2014and just talk about our 31 years of marriage and encouraging other couples.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you didn\u2019t quit!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t\u2014yes; we didn\u2019t quit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, there were dark, dark days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You and I flew back on a plane together, and I was looking in your eyes after the loss of your daughter. I saw a deeply wounded man attempting to love a deeply wounded wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014those were tough days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know\u2014you came through it. There will be other tough days in the future.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; right. It ain\u2019t all over, and it\u2019s not all behind us. And yet, we are\u2014I mean, I called one of our counselors in some of those darkest days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were getting ready to go stand on stage together\u2014Mary Beth and I\u2014and do a tour together. My boys were playing in my band; and Mary Beth had written her book, <em>Choosing to See. <\/em>This was as dark of a place\u2014and I was pretty convinced that we were going to get out in front of the world on this tour and, at a point of just highest, you know, kind of: \u201cAll eyes looking at the Chapman family,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s when it was just going to all blow up, right in front of the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI finally \/ I, literally, called a counselor\u2014a lady who\u2019d kind of been walking with us and encouraging us. I just said: \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know. This is probably the biggest mistake we\u2019ve ever made; because we\u2019re going to get in front of everybody, because it just feels so\u2014right now, we\u2019re on such a fine sheet of ice underneath us. It\u2019s going to break through at any moment. If I\u2019m just saying what I feel right now, it\u2019s probably going to happen. It just seems like a really bad plan that God has to put us in front of everybody for this thing to all blow up in front of the whole world watching.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cBut I don\u2019t know what to do. We\u2019re set on this course; and you know, do I pull the plug on all of this? What do we do? Are we complete frauds to stand up in front of people, night after night? We\u2019re as broken as we\u2019ve ever been.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she said: \u201cBut you\u2019re together. If you can walk out there together, can that be enough?\u201d [Emotion in voice] You know, I get emotional thinking about it; because she said: \u201cCan that be enough? You\u2019re together.\u201d I think that I finally had to come to a place to say: \u201cYes; that\u2019s enough. If God\u2019s held us to this point, together, and we\u2019re standing there together\u2014as broken, as confused, and as much pain and baggage, and all the tractor trailer full of mess we\u2019re dragging along behind us\u2014and we still are\u2014but, by the grace of God, we\u2019re together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote a song on the <em>Glorious Unfolding <\/em>album a couple of years ago called <em>Together<\/em>: [Steven quotes the words of the song.] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a promise\u2014marriage begins with a promise, it\u2019s maintained by a promise, and you run the race all the way to the finish line with that promise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You guys haven\u2019t quit, and I admire you\u2014I really do\u2014for just shouldering it together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been awhile since I\u2019ve asked you this question\u2014and, honestly, a lot of water under the bridge\u2014so I feel like asking it again. It\u2019s one of my favorite questions to ask men: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life?\u201d Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. It\u2019s not necessarily on a smoke-filled battlefield in a foreign country, although it can be that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it\u2019s when you faced your duty\u2014in the midst of nobody else understanding what was taking place in your soul, you did your duty. Do you know the answer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, I mean, the answer that comes to mind\u2014maybe a lot because of what we\u2019re talking about right now\u2014but it is\u2014I\u2019d say it is loving my wife and leading my family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really taken the most courage and the most trust in God\u2019s promises\u2014to not leave or forsake me \/ for His strength to be perfect in my weakness\u2014to hear Him say, \u201cFear not.\u201d That one commandment that\u2019s\u2014what is it?\u2014it\u2019s by far the greatest commandment in terms of the number of times it appears in Scripture\u2014it isn\u2019t: \u201cGet it together, son!\u201d\u2014you know?\u2014it isn\u2019t: \u201cDo it right \/ do it well,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and I think that\u2019s interesting\u2014because I think people who come and see you in concert\u2014you\u2019re pretty transparent \/ you\u2019re pretty vulnerable with what you share\u2014pretty candid about the real life you live\u2014and yet, we see you up on stage with the guitar, and you\u2019re having fun. You look fearless. But I\u2019m guessing that, if we saw you at home, as a husband \/ as a dad, you\u2019ve got the same fears that all of us have to wrestle with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat are some of the things you find yourself fearing, as a parent or as a husband?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, I mean, I\u2019m in the process right now of writing my story about my life. I\u2019ll come back and talk to you, Lord willing, in a year from now or a few months from now when I get it finished\u2014if it ever gets finished. But I\u2019m kind of writing my memoirs \/ my story. I\u2019m talking a lot about those fears and those voices. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of people will be surprised to find out, you know, all of those insecurities. You know, it\u2019s in all of us \/ it\u2019s in all of us artists. You know, you hear it if you listen to any\u2014even in the mainstream world, you see all these great quotes of, you know, different artists that have wrestled with insecurity. You go: \u201cThem?!\u2014that person?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I saw an interview on <em>60 Minutes<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBubba Watson\u2014the guy who won the Masters twice\u2014said: \u201cI deal with fear all of the time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cafraid of people. I\u2019m afraid of crowds.\u201d He\u2019s playing golf! [Laughter] He\u2019s performing his profession in front of the very people he\u2019s afraid of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes\u2014absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I mean, there\u2019s a whole long list of those things. But I think, for me, the thing that I\u2019m realizing\u2014the reason I mention the book is\u2014what\u2019s coming to the surface so much as I\u2019m telling my story and really just kind of going back and kind of reliving it a bit\u2014is just this incredible fear of disappointing people. The biggest person in my life\u2014obviously, there\u2019s God at the very top\u2014I don\u2019t want to disappoint God \/ the reality of the times and the ways that I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> And then, there\u2019s my wife\/my bride\u2014the one of whom I\u2019ve said: \u201cI want to care for you. I want to love you well,\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and know the times that I\u2019ve disappointed her \/ the ways that she, you know, will be disappointed with some things that I have no control over\u2014that I can\u2019t control\u2014because she\u2019s on her own journey of learning to trust God and not me. You know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> \u2014we all, you know\u2014there\u2019s a real challenge with that; because, you know, I\u2019m the one that she\u2019s going to come to with all of the frustration and the disappointment when she\u2019s really mad and disappointed with God and the way He\u2019s doing or sovereignly allowing things to happen in her life. You know, I\u2019m the place she\u2019s going to bring all of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This morning, Barbara and I, as we were talking before I came to work, we were talking about that very thing. One of the things we have to do, as followers of Christ, is assume responsibility for that which is ours and not assume responsibility for that which isn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let God be God in your spouse\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You can\u2019t control it. You\u2019ll go mad if you try to control it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014or assume responsibility\u2014that: \u201cYou know what? She\u2019s got to deal with her stuff. I\u2019ve got to deal with my stuff.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes. There\u2019s just a lot. At one point, I wanted to call this book I\u2019m working on, <em>Unfixable, <\/em>because that\u2019s the thing I\u2019m most afraid of\u2014the unfixable things in my life\u2014because I\u2019m a fixer. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry I laughed. I\u2019m not laughing at your book, but isn\u2019t that true of all of us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is one long process of facing issues in our lives, realizing, \u201cI\u2019m broken.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s what God\u2019s up to, Steven\u2014I think He\u2019s got one long process, called a lifetime, where He is weaning us from the world, and our love for the world, and preparing us for eternity. I can tell you\u2014as I get closer to eternity, I\u2019m looking forward to seeing Him, face to face, and to what He has for us increasingly; because the world doesn\u2019t have it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Amen! Isn\u2019t that the truth? Yes; sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; we\u2019ve been trying to point our listeners in that direction over the last couple of weeks\u2014talking about how God is our stability in whatever season we find ourself in, whether it\u2019s a season of personal turmoil or national turmoil. One of the things you\u2019ve mentioned repeatedly here, as we\u2019ve talked this week, is you\u2019ve got people in your life that speak into your life that you are transparent with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to turn to a listener and say: \u201cIf you\u2019re alone, you\u2019ve got to get involved in a local church. You have to find some other unfixable people \/ some other messy grace people and connect\u2014and get real and get honest\u2014because I think one of the classic deceptions of our enemy \/ the devil of hell\u2014and he does exist\u2014is he tries to get us isolated. In isolation, you can be convinced of anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Anything\u2014yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Absolutely; you are right. The thing I would encourage on that is\u2014just to remember that the church is whenever two or more are gathered together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> It\u2019s people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not a facility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes. It\u2019s getting with friends and with people that you can just be honest with \/ you can be accountable to on a regular basis. You know, I wrestle with that; because I\u2019m on the road \/ on tour. My church \/ my brothers, with swords drawn on either side of me, saying, \u201cYou\u2019re not fighting this battle alone!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> A lot of times, it\u2019s\u2014you know, a couple of guys\u2014and we have church in the back of the tour bus, you know, on an airplane\u2014me and a brother just wrestling together with: \u201cMan, this is hard! But here\u2019s what\u2019s most true. I need to encourage you in that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got to have that. You\u2019re right. If we get isolated\u2014and that is the greatest tool \/ the greatest weapon the enemy uses against us is to get us isolated, and get us away, and start whispering all these lies: \u201cGod\u2019s not good. He\u2019s not with you. You\u2019re all on your own.\u201d The tendency is to run even further into that\u2014so you\u2019re absolutely right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>24:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got to keep ourselves surrounded with people, with whom we can just be honest with, and we can just be, you know, with all of our stuff that\u2019s going on\u2014and yet somebody, who will say: \u201cMan, I hear you! I\u2019m not shaming you. I\u2019m not sticking a Bible Band-Aid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on your pain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbut let me just listen and let me remind you of what\u2019s most true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, thanks for your honesty here\u2014being authentic, and exhorting, and imploring, and lifting up some who have maybe fallen here. go on tour as a recording artist\u2014about to walk on stage, in city after city, and encourage people to walk with God, all the while knowing that, in your own marriage \/ your own family, you\u2019ve got struggles going on. That\u2019s exactly what Steven Curtis Chapman faced, not long ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> I literally called a counselor\u2014a lady who\u2019d kind of been walking with us and encouraging us\u2014and I just said, \u201cYou know, it just seems like a really bad plan that God has to put us in front of people, night after night. We\u2019re as broken as we\u2019ve ever been.\u201d And she said, \u201cIf you can walk out there together, can that be enough?\u201d I get emotional thinking about it. [Emotion in voice] I finally had to come to a place to say, \u201cYes; that\u2019s enough.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 28<sup>th<\/sup>. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever told him where he fits on your list of, you know, top ten favorite Christian recording artists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever told <em>you<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Maybe we should just keep that between us then? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think maybe we should! [Laughter] But Steven Curtis Chapman does join us again here on the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSteven\u2014I want to talk about Steven and Mary Beth for a moment. She\u2019s not here; so we can\u2019t get the straight scoop since she\u2019s not here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; right! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But as I kind of look at your life, Steven\u2014and I\u2019ve only used this illustration with one other person\u2014when I interviewed Pat Summerall, the great sportscaster for, I think, over 50 years. I compared his life to four quarters. Clearly, when we interviewed him, he was in the fourth quarter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So I look at your life\u2014and I know you pretty well\u2014so I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYes; I can see, kind of, four quarters in Steven\u2019s life too.\u201d The first quarter was growing up and all the lessons that he had to learn in starting out a career\u2014a lot of, probably, eating humble pie in the midst of that to be able to rise to stardom within the Christian community and become the leading all-time singer in terms of number of albums sold \/ number one singles hits. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s astounding\u2014some of the things\u2014five Grammies\u2014all of those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019d be your second quarter\u2014when you were on a roll. I kind of picture your third quarter, Steven, starting with the death of your daughter eight years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I still think you\u2019re in the third quarter. You\u2019ve just released a new album about <em>Worship<\/em> a<em>nd Believe.<\/em> It comes out of kind of the beginning of the third quarter. What I want to ask you is: \u201cHow are you, as a man\u2014because you\u2019ve seen your career soar with tens of thousands of people showing up to your concerts and best-selling albums and singles; and now, because of digital, that is all turned upside down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re not in the fourth quarter yet; but I want to ask you: \u201cHow are you looking at the fourth quarter, as a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, the word, \u201cgratitude,\u201d is the one that keeps coming back\u2014to live with a heart that is grateful as you look at amazing opportunities that God has given you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it\u2019s not even about significance\u2014you\u2019ve had all of this success. You know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> \u2014something that a lot of men deal with that: \u201cWhat does it mean to have that significance?\u201d But I just think, for me, you know\u2014more and more, living in a place of just being grateful for all that God has done, and yet all that He\u2019s still doing, and recognizing that His economy is so very different than ours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we equate so much of what we do\u2014especially guys, like us\u2014that God has placed us in a ministry and in a place of significance with what we\u2019ve said, or what we\u2019ve written, or what we\u2019ve sung\u2014that kind of thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust because those numbers\u2014you know, there\u2019s this automatic thing of: \u201cBoy, God\u2019s really blessing that ministry; because look how it has grown. Look how it\u2019s blowing up. Look how many people are listening, or buying the records, or coming to the concerts,\u201d or whatever. We know it\u2014you know, we\u2019ve said it to each other, even when we\u2019re in those moments of the heights\u2014you know, soaring into the heights\u2014that: \u201cHey, God isn\u2019t impressed with this. God works just as much through, you know, a missionary sitting somewhere in the middle of Africa with 12 people gathered around, sharing the gospel, as He is with 12,000 people in an arena somewhere.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe know all those things in our head, but really believing it and getting to a place of saying: \u201cGod, I want to be faithful in whatever season that is \/ in whatever quarter I\u2019m in. I want to keep believing what\u2019s most true about what You say about me,\u201d because it is hard not to equate our significance \/ our worth with, you know: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow well\u2026\u201d or \u201cHow many records are we selling?\u201d \u201cHow many concert tickets are people buying to come hear what I have to say?\u201d Does it still matter as much, you know, now that I\u2019m saying it, you know, 25 years\/30 years later?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe truth is, you know\u2014and I tell this to Mary Beth sometimes\u2014you know: \u201cSweetheart, I believe the fact that we can stand here together on stage or\u2014you know, on a stage figuratively, whether or not we\u2019re literally on a stage \/ but just with our lives being sort of on the stage\u2014that communicates something, now at 31 years of marriage, having walked through what we have. Being in this quarter that we\u2019re in \/ if it\u2019s third quarter, and still showing up\u2014there\u2019s something just about the fact that we\u2019re standing there together that communicates something.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s how we greeted one another just a few minutes ago\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014when we said, \u201cHi,\u201d back in my office before we came in the studio. You just came in and said, \u201cYou\u2019re still here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cYou\u2019re still standing!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cSo am I! Let\u2019s embrace!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s good! Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know: \u201cWe haven\u2019t quit.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And really, there is no retirement. The whole concept of retirement came from withdrawal, for a brief period of time, from the front lines of battle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to \u201cretire\u201d was to regain your perspective, and freshen your soul, and get some physical rest to go back into battle!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I love the quote by Winston Churchill\u2014he said, \u201cOn the plains of hesitation bleach the bones of those who sat down to rest and, while resting, died.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I love that because God made us for battle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As you look\u2014and we don\u2019t know how long we have\u2014you may have six quarters yet, Steven. [Laughter] You\u2019re like the Energizer<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bunny! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as you look at the fourth quarter in your life, how do you envision yourself being used by God if He gives you the grace and the health to be able to do it? I hear you describing a bit of a statesman for Jesus Christ\u2014just use the influence you\u2019ve been given, as an artist \/ as someone who has been through some tough times\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to just continue to represent Christ. You\u2019re not withdrawing, I know, because we tried to get you here a few months ago back for our 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary celebration; and you were too busy. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> I know; I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Of course, we called too late too! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, it is still a busy season in that, but it is\u2014you know, you\u2019re absolutely right. It\u2019s recognizing, I think, at every season, there\u2019s something so significant about that season\u2014about what you can communicate \/ what you can share. I mean, there\u2019s an authority\u2014and, at this point, I\u2019ve had some brothers around me that encourage me in that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they say, \u201cYou know, there are things that you can only say now, at this point in your life, having walked through what you\u2019ve walked through.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Beth and I are talking about a season of, you know, more ministry together. Maybe we do\u2014you know, we would love to get to do things with you guys\u2014and just talk about our 31 years of marriage and encouraging other couples.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you didn\u2019t quit!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t\u2014yes; we didn\u2019t quit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, there were dark, dark days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You and I flew back on a plane together, and I was looking in your eyes after the loss of your daughter. I saw a deeply wounded man attempting to love a deeply wounded wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014those were tough days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know\u2014you came through it. There will be other tough days in the future.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; right. It ain\u2019t all over, and it\u2019s not all behind us. And yet, we are\u2014I mean, I called one of our counselors in some of those darkest days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were getting ready to go stand on stage together\u2014Mary Beth and I\u2014and do a tour together. My boys were playing in my band; and Mary Beth had written her book, <em>Choosing to See. <\/em>This was as dark of a place\u2014and I was pretty convinced that we were going to get out in front of the world on this tour and, at a point of just highest, you know, kind of: \u201cAll eyes looking at the Chapman family,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s when it was just going to all blow up, right in front of the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI finally \/ I, literally, called a counselor\u2014a lady who\u2019d kind of been walking with us and encouraging us. I just said: \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know. This is probably the biggest mistake we\u2019ve ever made; because we\u2019re going to get in front of everybody, because it just feels so\u2014right now, we\u2019re on such a fine sheet of ice underneath us. It\u2019s going to break through at any moment. If I\u2019m just saying what I feel right now, it\u2019s probably going to happen. It just seems like a really bad plan that God has to put us in front of everybody for this thing to all blow up in front of the whole world watching.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cBut I don\u2019t know what to do. We\u2019re set on this course; and you know, do I pull the plug on all of this? What do we do? Are we complete frauds to stand up in front of people, night after night? We\u2019re as broken as we\u2019ve ever been.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she said: \u201cBut you\u2019re together. If you can walk out there together, can that be enough?\u201d [Emotion in voice] You know, I get emotional thinking about it; because she said: \u201cCan that be enough? You\u2019re together.\u201d I think that I finally had to come to a place to say: \u201cYes; that\u2019s enough. If God\u2019s held us to this point, together, and we\u2019re standing there together\u2014as broken, as confused, and as much pain and baggage, and all the tractor trailer full of mess we\u2019re dragging along behind us\u2014and we still are\u2014but, by the grace of God, we\u2019re together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote a song on the <em>Glorious Unfolding <\/em>album a couple of years ago called <em>Together<\/em>: [Steven quotes the words of the song.] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a promise\u2014marriage begins with a promise, it\u2019s maintained by a promise, and you run the race all the way to the finish line with that promise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You guys haven\u2019t quit, and I admire you\u2014I really do\u2014for just shouldering it together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been awhile since I\u2019ve asked you this question\u2014and, honestly, a lot of water under the bridge\u2014so I feel like asking it again. It\u2019s one of my favorite questions to ask men: \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in all your life?\u201d Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear. It\u2019s not necessarily on a smoke-filled battlefield in a foreign country, although it can be that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it\u2019s when you faced your duty\u2014in the midst of nobody else understanding what was taking place in your soul, you did your duty. Do you know the answer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, I mean, the answer that comes to mind\u2014maybe a lot because of what we\u2019re talking about right now\u2014but it is\u2014I\u2019d say it is loving my wife and leading my family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really taken the most courage and the most trust in God\u2019s promises\u2014to not leave or forsake me \/ for His strength to be perfect in my weakness\u2014to hear Him say, \u201cFear not.\u201d That one commandment that\u2019s\u2014what is it?\u2014it\u2019s by far the greatest commandment in terms of the number of times it appears in Scripture\u2014it isn\u2019t: \u201cGet it together, son!\u201d\u2014you know?\u2014it isn\u2019t: \u201cDo it right \/ do it well,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; and I think that\u2019s interesting\u2014because I think people who come and see you in concert\u2014you\u2019re pretty transparent \/ you\u2019re pretty vulnerable with what you share\u2014pretty candid about the real life you live\u2014and yet, we see you up on stage with the guitar, and you\u2019re having fun. You look fearless. But I\u2019m guessing that, if we saw you at home, as a husband \/ as a dad, you\u2019ve got the same fears that all of us have to wrestle with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat are some of the things you find yourself fearing, as a parent or as a husband?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Well, I mean, I\u2019m in the process right now of writing my story about my life. I\u2019ll come back and talk to you, Lord willing, in a year from now or a few months from now when I get it finished\u2014if it ever gets finished. But I\u2019m kind of writing my memoirs \/ my story. I\u2019m talking a lot about those fears and those voices. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a lot of people will be surprised to find out, you know, all of those insecurities. You know, it\u2019s in all of us \/ it\u2019s in all of us artists. You know, you hear it if you listen to any\u2014even in the mainstream world, you see all these great quotes of, you know, different artists that have wrestled with insecurity. You go: \u201cThem?!\u2014that person?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I saw an interview on <em>60 Minutes<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBubba Watson\u2014the guy who won the Masters twice\u2014said: \u201cI deal with fear all of the time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cafraid of people. I\u2019m afraid of crowds.\u201d He\u2019s playing golf! [Laughter] He\u2019s performing his profession in front of the very people he\u2019s afraid of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes\u2014absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I mean, there\u2019s a whole long list of those things. But I think, for me, the thing that I\u2019m realizing\u2014the reason I mention the book is\u2014what\u2019s coming to the surface so much as I\u2019m telling my story and really just kind of going back and kind of reliving it a bit\u2014is just this incredible fear of disappointing people. The biggest person in my life\u2014obviously, there\u2019s God at the very top\u2014I don\u2019t want to disappoint God \/ the reality of the times and the ways that I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> And then, there\u2019s my wife\/my bride\u2014the one of whom I\u2019ve said: \u201cI want to care for you. I want to love you well,\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and know the times that I\u2019ve disappointed her \/ the ways that she, you know, will be disappointed with some things that I have no control over\u2014that I can\u2019t control\u2014because she\u2019s on her own journey of learning to trust God and not me. You know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> \u2014we all, you know\u2014there\u2019s a real challenge with that; because, you know, I\u2019m the one that she\u2019s going to come to with all of the frustration and the disappointment when she\u2019s really mad and disappointed with God and the way He\u2019s doing or sovereignly allowing things to happen in her life. You know, I\u2019m the place she\u2019s going to bring all of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This morning, Barbara and I, as we were talking before I came to work, we were talking about that very thing. One of the things we have to do, as followers of Christ, is assume responsibility for that which is ours and not assume responsibility for that which isn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let God be God in your spouse\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You can\u2019t control it. You\u2019ll go mad if you try to control it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014or assume responsibility\u2014that: \u201cYou know what? She\u2019s got to deal with her stuff. I\u2019ve got to deal with my stuff.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; yes. There\u2019s just a lot. At one point, I wanted to call this book I\u2019m working on, <em>Unfixable, <\/em>because that\u2019s the thing I\u2019m most afraid of\u2014the unfixable things in my life\u2014because I\u2019m a fixer. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry I laughed. I\u2019m not laughing at your book, but isn\u2019t that true of all of us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is one long process of facing issues in our lives, realizing, \u201cI\u2019m broken.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s what God\u2019s up to, Steven\u2014I think He\u2019s got one long process, called a lifetime, where He is weaning us from the world, and our love for the world, and preparing us for eternity. I can tell you\u2014as I get closer to eternity, I\u2019m looking forward to seeing Him, face to face, and to what He has for us increasingly; because the world doesn\u2019t have it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Amen! Isn\u2019t that the truth? Yes; sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; we\u2019ve been trying to point our listeners in that direction over the last couple of weeks\u2014talking about how God is our stability in whatever season we find ourself in, whether it\u2019s a season of personal turmoil or national turmoil. One of the things you\u2019ve mentioned repeatedly here, as we\u2019ve talked this week, is you\u2019ve got people in your life that speak into your life that you are transparent with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just want to turn to a listener and say: \u201cIf you\u2019re alone, you\u2019ve got to get involved in a local church. You have to find some other unfixable people \/ some other messy grace people and connect\u2014and get real and get honest\u2014because I think one of the classic deceptions of our enemy \/ the devil of hell\u2014and he does exist\u2014is he tries to get us isolated. In isolation, you can be convinced of anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Anything\u2014yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Absolutely; you are right. The thing I would encourage on that is\u2014just to remember that the church is whenever two or more are gathered together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> It\u2019s people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not a facility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> Yes. It\u2019s getting with friends and with people that you can just be honest with \/ you can be accountable to on a regular basis. You know, I wrestle with that; because I\u2019m on the road \/ on tour. My church \/ my brothers, with swords drawn on either side of me, saying, \u201cYou\u2019re not fighting this battle alone!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> A lot of times, it\u2019s\u2014you know, a couple of guys\u2014and we have church in the back of the tour bus, you know, on an airplane\u2014me and a brother just wrestling together with: \u201cMan, this is hard! But here\u2019s what\u2019s most true. I need to encourage you in that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got to have that. You\u2019re right. If we get isolated\u2014and that is the greatest tool \/ the greatest weapon the enemy uses against us is to get us isolated, and get us away, and start whispering all these lies: \u201cGod\u2019s not good. He\u2019s not with you. You\u2019re all on your own.\u201d The tendency is to run even further into that\u2014so you\u2019re absolutely right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>24:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got to keep ourselves surrounded with people, with whom we can just be honest with, and we can just be, you know, with all of our stuff that\u2019s going on\u2014and yet somebody, who will say: \u201cMan, I hear you! I\u2019m not shaming you. I\u2019m not sticking a Bible Band-Aid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on your pain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cbut let me just listen and let me remind you of what\u2019s most true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, thanks for your honesty here\u2014being authentic, and exhorting, and imploring, and lifting up some who have maybe fallen here.
