Steven Curtis Chapman joins us today and shares some of the life lessons he\u2019s learned on his journey of faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. So, I saw you pulling in the parking lot this morning. Your windows were down and the CD was blaring out of your speakers. You were singing <em>Saddle up Your Horses<\/em>. I thought, \u201cOkay; I know where we\u2019re headed today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, it\u2019s not often that I come to the studio having spent the night before looking through my closet; but today\u2019s guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I know where we are going to go here; alright. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014I actually brought Barbara into my\u2014not <em>my<\/em> closet \/ it\u2019s ours\u2014we don\u2019t have two closets\u2014brought her in and I said: \u201cI know he\u2019s going to be wearing something\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014 I know it\u2019s going to be absolutely off-the-wall. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI just haven\u2019t been to Salvation Army recently, or Goodwill, to pick out something that could even be in the league!\u201d So I looked over everything, and this is as good as \/ this is as edgy\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You\u2019re styling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m styling\u2014I have a grey T-shirt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You got it\u2014a grey T-shirt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you what I\u2019m going to do\u2014but here\u2019s the thing \/ here\u2019s what I want the listening audience to know\u2014Steven looks like a normal person. [Laughter] I\u2019m going to take a picture\u2014they\u2019re going to see it. He\u2019s actually dressed in street clothes. He does have a chain around his neck and a ball cap, but I just\u2014hold on one second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>What\u2019s really sad is this\u2014alright; we\u2019re doing it \/ we\u2019re doing a picture. [Laughter] What\u2019s really sad about this is that I literally thought this morning, as I\u2014and I\u2019m on a tour bus\u2014and I\u2019m thinking\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were actually thinking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>\u2014 \u201cI don\u2019t have anything nearly cool enough to wear to see Dennis Rainey out here with me today. [Laughter]I just have plain, normal stuff here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, that\u2019s the first thing you mention when I see you; and you look sharp. You look very good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019m glad\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>I\u2019m taking notes from <em>you<\/em> today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I know you are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You\u2019re looking great\u2014the grey T-shirt underneath the purple plaid shirt\u2014[Laughter] it\u2019s good. Good, brother\u2014it\u2019s good! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you\u2019ve probably recognized that voice by now. That\u2019s Steven Curtis Chapman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSteven and I\u2014you can either say fortunately or unfortunately\u2014go back aways together. In fact, think back to over 12 years ago, Steven, when you decided to join arms with FamilyLife\u2014and I think Focus on the Family<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> was there at the beginning\u2014as we talked about bringing together orphan care, adoption, foster care leaders from all over the world, who believers and followers of Christ\u2014now, what it\u2019s become.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, is that cool or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>It\u2019s really amazing. It really is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you\u2019re absolutely right\u2014it was here in this very building that Mary Beth and I came, talked to you and Barbara about our heart for getting the church kind of awake to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJames 1:27 and what true religion really is all about\u2014caring for orphans. The CAFO, Christian Alliance for Orphans, came out of that\u2014and Orphan Summit and all of those great things that have come from that\u2014and obviously our work with Show Hope. At the time, it was Shaohannah\u2019s Hope we were talking about\u2014Shaohannah\u2019s Hope. Nobody could spell it, or pronounce it, or say it, so we decided\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I was one of them! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; I know: \u201cSo, it is Sannah\u2019s Hope?\u201d \/ \u201cIs it Shaniah\u2019s Hope?\u2014what is that?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, it is interesting\u2014Christian Alliance for Orphans does host an annual summit. This past year, we had 2,500 people attend from over three dozen countries; and it did start right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There were 39 people here \/ 39 different organizations. We said, \u201cWe have to check our egos and our logos at the door and figure out how to collaborate together to do something on behalf of the fatherless, globally.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt Show Hope\u2014you\u2019ve now helped over 5,000 orphans in 53 countries. That data is probably outdated now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. Well, it\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What\u2019s the number now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s over 5,000. I don\u2019t know what the actual number is; because every month it changes by a few hundred\u2014hopefully, Lord willing. The interesting thing is\u2014those who are right at the front of all that\u2019s going on in the world of adoption and orphans\u2014is that the number of international adoptions and, really, adoptions globally\u2014is decreasing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>What\u2019s interesting for us is\u2014at Show Hope, we have not seen a decrease at all in families coming and saying, \u201cWe would adopt if we had the resources to do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristian families that say: \u201cGod\u2019s called us to this. We\u2019re still showing up, because we know this is God\u2019s heart for our family and for children who need families.\u201d So it\u2019s not declining at all as far as the work that we\u2019re doing through Show Hope, assisting families in that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s just many great things going on with that, within Show Hope, but\u2014you\u2019re right; I mean, when I think about in the 12\/13 years since we had those conversations\u2014and we used to kind of say things like, \u201cMan, if we could just get the nose of the Titanic just barely turned and going in this new direction of God\u2019s heart for orphans,\u201d\u2014and we\u2019ve seen it happen\u2014not that we\u2019ve done it\u2014but God\u2019s done it through us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He has. There is actually a movement now\u2014and I want you to speak to a group of people, who are listening to us, who have a heart for orphan\u2014maybe it\u2019s foster care \/ maybe it\u2019s adoption\u2014Show Hope has actually created resources for people to start an orphan care ministry in their church; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAdvocates went right within their church. We have all the material and all of the kind of information to help get that started within your own church\u2014to begin to come alongside families that have a heart for adoption or just to even make them aware of what God\u2019s doing in the hearts of people\u2014around the world, within the country, in churches\u2014around this caring for the fatherless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We have a link on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com. If people want to go to our website, they can link up and find out about all that God is doing through the ministry of Show Hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Steven, you\u2019ve been in music now\u2014what?\u201430 years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Next year\u20141987, my first record came out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>So 2017 will be 30 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have just released\u2014I would say, for you, it\u2019s a little bit of a shift\u2014but in some ways it isn\u2019t, because your music has always moved people to worship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s\u2014yes; it\u2019s interesting, because we\u2019ve been\u2014the record label, and publicist, and all that\u2014we\u2019ve been referencing this new <em>Worship and Believe<\/em> project as my first worship album. I always feel like I have to correct that and say, \u201cWell, I feel like every song I\u2019ve written \/ every album I\u2019ve made is a worship album.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut in the sense of corporate singing these songs together\u2014declaring the Word of God set to music \/ what the Psalms have been for me\u2014just dropping anchor, as I call it, in the promises of God\u2014this new project really has been written from that place. Nobody knows this any better than you; because we\u2019ve sat here, across from the table with microphones in front of us, and talked about this quite a bit over the last few years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was eight years ago when we lost Maria, our youngest daughter, in a tragic accident. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was in those darkest moments\u2014in the moments of just absolute, deepest places of grief and the deepest valleys that\u2014when I couldn\u2019t even complete a thought \/ when I didn\u2019t know how I was going to survive and how I was going to lead my family through this darkness\u2014and really, literally, the earliest moments even\u2014still right there, at the hospital, knowing that Maria had gone on to be with Jesus\u2014that I just had nothing else that I could say, or speak, or whisper, or think. It all came down to one thing. I just had to say: \u201cBlessed be the name of the Lord. I\u2019m going to worship You, God. I\u2019m going to trust You\u2014I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to take my next step or my next breath.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe only clear thought I could have in the midst of that was\u2014out of absolute desperation\u2014was just: \u201cI\u2019m going to declare, God, that You are good and that You are faithful. I\u2019m going to worship You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is literally what kept me alive and has all of these last eight years. That\u2019s really where these\u2014when I say a worship album\u2014these songs that came from that place of just, \u201cI\u2019m going to drop anchor in the promises of God, declaring these things to be true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to talk with you about this; because we\u2019re now eight years, as you mentioned, since the death of your daughter. Tonight, I got a phone call with a friend who lost a child; and I\u2019ve just been praying and thinking about how I could comfort him. I know a good bit of it is just listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But if someone\u2019s listening right now, who is in a dark place\u2014and maybe it\u2019s not the loss of a child \/ maybe it\u2019s the loss of health, maybe it\u2019s the loss of a job, loss of a parent\u2014how would you put your arm around them and\u2014again, you\u2019ve already said it in many ways: \u201cGo to the Psalms,\u201d \u201cBelieve the truth about God \/ don\u2019t believe a lie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThere is a devil who will lie to you \/ he\u2019s a deceiver\u2014he\u2019ll whisper in your ear and say, \u2018God\u2019s not in charge \/ He\u2019s not in control\u2014blame God \/ charge God.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Job didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sounds like you ultimately got there as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; well, I mean, and you said it\u2014I think it\u2019s\u2014I\u2019ll sound like I\u2019m contradicting myself a little bit, but it\u2019s both. There are no words. I think the most comforting thing\u2014I\u2019ve said this to you before\u2014that people said to Mary Beth and me on our journey\u2014as crazy as it is\u2014is when people would just say: \u201cI don\u2019t have any words. I\u2019m just going to sit with you, and I\u2019m going to listen to you, and I\u2019m going to weep with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you just said it: \u201cDon\u2019t believe the lie that the enemy would tell us\u2014is: \u201cAnd this is all that\u2019s true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. This is where the father of lies comes along and says: \u201cGod\u2019s not there for you. He doesn\u2019t care about you. He does not want the best for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Right; yes\u2014or, \u201cHe\u2019s just absent,\u201d or \u201cHe doesn\u2019t even exist,\u201d or \u201cIt\u2019s all just a myth \/ it\u2019s just a fable to kind of\u2026\u201d\u2014you know, it\u2019s all of those things. For me, I\u2019ve come to realize that the pain \/ the grief is very real and very true\u2014and you may be in it\u2014and you\u2019re going to speak with your friend tonight who\u2019s in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, for us, it was those who would acknowledge that alongside us\u2014even if it was in their silence \/ to just sit with us. Then, in those right moments, to be able to hear God\u2019s voice\u2014maybe, it\u2019s through a friend; it\u2019s through the Psalms; for me, it was through that verse that a great friend and songwriter, who wrote, \u201cBlessed be Your name. You give; You take away\u2026\u201d\u2014you know, Matt Redman, who wrote the song, <em>Blessed Be Your Name<\/em>\u2014who set that verse to music. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just sing it, and hold onto it, and listen to it over and over again; because, for me, it was coming to that place to say: \u201cAs real and true as all the pain, and the sadness, and the grief is right now, the greater truth\u2014what\u2019s most true \/ what\u2019s most real\u2014is that God is for us, and God is good. His heart is good\u2014as much as, right now, everything is screaming at me: \u2018It is not good \/ God\u2019s not good. If He\u2019s good, how is this happening?\u2019\u201d I have to drop anchor in the promises of God\u2014that He is good, that He is for us, that He is with us, and hold onto that for dear life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI discovered something\u2014even as I was writing this album \/ putting these songs together\u2014and it was a verse in the story that I kind of knew from Scripture, but it came screaming back to me in this process. It was about Nebuchadnezzar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had lost his mind, you know, and there\u2019s this great verse\u2014I think it\u2019s in Daniel, if I\u2019m right\u2014where it\u2019s talking about King Nebuchadnezzar and it says, \u201cI lifted my eyes to heaven, and my sanity returned.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was literally like he worshipped\u2014he just lifted his eyes \/ he looked to God\u2014because, as he was looking at his circumstances and everything around him, he literally had gone insane \/ gone crazy\u2014that\u2019s the feeling of grief and, especially, just utter loss like that\u2014you feel like you\u2019re going crazy. Maybe, it\u2019s not even, like you said, loss of a child\u2014maybe it\u2019s a job or your marriage falling apart\u2014you just: \u201cI\u2019m losing my mind. I\u2019m going crazy.\u201d King Nebuchadnezzar just looked to heaven \/ he looked to God; and he said, \u201cAlright; I\u2019m going to turn my eyes to You, to trust and believe that You\u2019re God, that You\u2019re with me in this.\u201d \u201cHis sanity returned,\u201d\u2014it says\u2014\u201cand he worshipped God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a profound thing there\u2014in just choosing, like Job, to say: \u201cBlessed be the name of the Lord. I\u2019m going to worship Him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>On the back of my business card is a quote that some of our listeners, who are regulars here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> and tune us in quite frequently, hear me quote this statement by Tom Skinner. Tom Skinner grew up in Brooklyn\u2014he was a gang member; his dad was a preacher; he came to faith, listening to the radio; then walked out of the gang, with his life being threatened, saying: \u201cI\u2019ve come to faith in Christ; I can no longer do this thing.\u201d Went on to be the chaplain of the Washington Redskins, and he impacted a young man\u2019s life\u2014mine\u2014back in 1969. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe started and ended five messages, Steven, with this quote at the beginning of the message and at the end of the message. It was <em>exactly<\/em> where I was living, because I think\u2014not just me \/ I\u2019m not the only one who struggles with doubt\u2014I think all kinds of believers struggle with doubt. They\u2019re wondering, \u201cWhat do you do with doubt?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s what he said\u2014he said: \u201cI spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts when, suddenly, I realized I had better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions that I cannot answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape, and it\u2019s a great relief.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Wow; wow. That\u2019s so good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Doesn\u2019t that capture most of life?\u2014because you\u2019re going to have doubts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cIs God there? Is He good?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And here\u2019s what I\u2019d want our listeners to know\u2014and I just, personally\u2014I don\u2019t think God is threatened by our doubts. I don\u2019t think He\u2019s threatened by our anger. I don\u2019t think\u2014you know, I don\u2019t think God is this weakling, who gets upset because we go through a period of forsaking Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think He\u2019s after us\u2014He wants to love us \/ He wants us to experience that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, the Psalms\u2014that\u2019s a great place to go, because the psalmist expressed it all; didn\u2019t he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Just the honesty\u2014I mean, so much of the Psalms and so many Scriptures that I\u2019d read a thousand times\u2014\u201cBut until you\u2019re in that place,\u201d\u2014like my pastor, Scotty Smith, says\u2014\u201ccan we really cry, \u2018Abba! Father!\u2019 \/ can we really cry that cry: \u2018Father! Daddy!\u2019 \/ cry out to God\u2014until we first cry, \u2018Uncle!\u2019\u2014you know, until we\u2019re in a place where we\u2019re so desperate to say: \u2018I give. I\u2019m done. It\u2019s over. Now, God, save me, \/ Father, help me,\u2019\u2014until we\u2019re at that place of desperation.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think even going back and seeing so many places in the Psalms where David was saying: \u201cGod, You\u2019ve left me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>\u201cI feel alone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then there\u2019s that amazing encouragement to pour your heart out to God\u2014not just the good, Christian stuff out to God \/ you know, \u201cGod, I love You,\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re good,\u201d\u2014but: \u201cGod, I don\u2019t get this. I don\u2019t understand it. I\u2019m confused. I\u2019m angry. I\u2019m hurting.\u201d You know, \u201cThis isn\u2019t right. This isn\u2019t right\u2014I\u2019m going to pour all that out to You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, again\u2014back to the Psalms\u2014there was a point where, all of a sudden, for me, it was another light bulb that went off\u2014when the psalmist says, \u201cSoul, why are you so downcast in me?\u201d He began to ask the right questions. Instead of, \u201cGod where are You?\u201d it was: \u201cSoul\/heart, wait a minute. Why are you so downcast within me? Hope in God.\u201d You know, that was the psalmist\u2019s advice to himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was talking to himself \/ saying to his own soul\u2014I got this picture, and I had it many times in my own life, and still do\u2014where I\u2019m almost pounding on my own chest \/ kind of my heart, going: \u201cCome on, heart. Come on! Why are you so downcast? Why are you giving in to this hopelessness?\u201d because you\u2019re beginning to believe all those other lesser truths that are still true: \u201cLife\u2019s confusing, \u201cIt\u2019s a <em>mess<\/em> right now in our world,\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen in this country?\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen in this world?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You know, all those things are true; but then there\u2019s this pounding on his own heart, going: \u201cBut wait a minute. Come on, heart. Come on, soul. Remember what\u2019s <em>most <\/em>true. Why are you so downcast? Hope in God! Put your hope in God \/ in the truth of who God is.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What you\u2019re talking about there is counseling your own soul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there really is\u2014it sounds selfish \/ it really isn\u2019t\u2014is giving yourself the right <em>advice<\/em>, because there are voices. I read a book recently\u2014in fact, that was all about voices in your head\u2014and you have to counsel your own soul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I think it also helps for you to be thinking, and meditating on, and saying out loud things that are true about who God is and about His involvement in our lives. I\u2019m just thinking about times when I have pulled out one of your CDs\u2014like the worship CD that you\u2019ve just recorded, <em>Worship and Believe<\/em>. You pop that in, and you listen, and you sing along, and it reorders your thinking\u2014you\u2019re renewing your mind \/ you\u2019re telling yourself what\u2019s true over and over again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think James 3\u2014you know, where it talks about the tongue and the power of the tongue\u2014I think one of the things it tells us there is that we can use our tongue like a bit in the mouth of a horse and direct our lives in the right direction by saying the right things about who God is and what life is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just encourage our listeners, if they\u2019ve not heard your new CD: \u201cGo to our website at FamilyLifeToday.com. Steven Curtis Chapman joins us today and shares some of the life lessons he\u2019s learned on his journey of faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. So, I saw you pulling in the parking lot this morning. Your windows were down and the CD was blaring out of your speakers. You were singing <em>Saddle up Your Horses<\/em>. I thought, \u201cOkay; I know where we\u2019re headed today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, it\u2019s not often that I come to the studio having spent the night before looking through my closet; but today\u2019s guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I know where we are going to go here; alright. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014I actually brought Barbara into my\u2014not <em>my<\/em> closet \/ it\u2019s ours\u2014we don\u2019t have two closets\u2014brought her in and I said: \u201cI know he\u2019s going to be wearing something\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014 I know it\u2019s going to be absolutely off-the-wall. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI just haven\u2019t been to Salvation Army recently, or Goodwill, to pick out something that could even be in the league!\u201d So I looked over everything, and this is as good as \/ this is as edgy\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You\u2019re styling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m styling\u2014I have a grey T-shirt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You got it\u2014a grey T-shirt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll tell you what I\u2019m going to do\u2014but here\u2019s the thing \/ here\u2019s what I want the listening audience to know\u2014Steven looks like a normal person. [Laughter] I\u2019m going to take a picture\u2014they\u2019re going to see it. He\u2019s actually dressed in street clothes. He does have a chain around his neck and a ball cap, but I just\u2014hold on one second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>What\u2019s really sad is this\u2014alright; we\u2019re doing it \/ we\u2019re doing a picture. [Laughter] What\u2019s really sad about this is that I literally thought this morning, as I\u2014and I\u2019m on a tour bus\u2014and I\u2019m thinking\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were actually thinking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>\u2014 \u201cI don\u2019t have anything nearly cool enough to wear to see Dennis Rainey out here with me today. [Laughter]I just have plain, normal stuff here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, that\u2019s the first thing you mention when I see you; and you look sharp. You look very good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I\u2019m glad\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>I\u2019m taking notes from <em>you<\/em> today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, I know you are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You\u2019re looking great\u2014the grey T-shirt underneath the purple plaid shirt\u2014[Laughter] it\u2019s good. Good, brother\u2014it\u2019s good! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you\u2019ve probably recognized that voice by now. That\u2019s Steven Curtis Chapman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSteven and I\u2014you can either say fortunately or unfortunately\u2014go back aways together. In fact, think back to over 12 years ago, Steven, when you decided to join arms with FamilyLife\u2014and I think Focus on the Family<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> was there at the beginning\u2014as we talked about bringing together orphan care, adoption, foster care leaders from all over the world, who believers and followers of Christ\u2014now, what it\u2019s become.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, is that cool or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>It\u2019s really amazing. It really is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you\u2019re absolutely right\u2014it was here in this very building that Mary Beth and I came, talked to you and Barbara about our heart for getting the church kind of awake to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJames 1:27 and what true religion really is all about\u2014caring for orphans. The CAFO, Christian Alliance for Orphans, came out of that\u2014and Orphan Summit and all of those great things that have come from that\u2014and obviously our work with Show Hope. At the time, it was Shaohannah\u2019s Hope we were talking about\u2014Shaohannah\u2019s Hope. Nobody could spell it, or pronounce it, or say it, so we decided\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I was one of them! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; I know: \u201cSo, it is Sannah\u2019s Hope?\u201d \/ \u201cIs it Shaniah\u2019s Hope?\u2014what is that?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, it is interesting\u2014Christian Alliance for Orphans does host an annual summit. This past year, we had 2,500 people attend from over three dozen countries; and it did start right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There were 39 people here \/ 39 different organizations. We said, \u201cWe have to check our egos and our logos at the door and figure out how to collaborate together to do something on behalf of the fatherless, globally.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt Show Hope\u2014you\u2019ve now helped over 5,000 orphans in 53 countries. That data is probably outdated now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes. Well, it\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What\u2019s the number now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s over 5,000. I don\u2019t know what the actual number is; because every month it changes by a few hundred\u2014hopefully, Lord willing. The interesting thing is\u2014those who are right at the front of all that\u2019s going on in the world of adoption and orphans\u2014is that the number of international adoptions and, really, adoptions globally\u2014is decreasing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>What\u2019s interesting for us is\u2014at Show Hope, we have not seen a decrease at all in families coming and saying, \u201cWe would adopt if we had the resources to do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChristian families that say: \u201cGod\u2019s called us to this. We\u2019re still showing up, because we know this is God\u2019s heart for our family and for children who need families.\u201d So it\u2019s not declining at all as far as the work that we\u2019re doing through Show Hope, assisting families in that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s just many great things going on with that, within Show Hope, but\u2014you\u2019re right; I mean, when I think about in the 12\/13 years since we had those conversations\u2014and we used to kind of say things like, \u201cMan, if we could just get the nose of the Titanic just barely turned and going in this new direction of God\u2019s heart for orphans,\u201d\u2014and we\u2019ve seen it happen\u2014not that we\u2019ve done it\u2014but God\u2019s done it through us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He has. There is actually a movement now\u2014and I want you to speak to a group of people, who are listening to us, who have a heart for orphan\u2014maybe it\u2019s foster care \/ maybe it\u2019s adoption\u2014Show Hope has actually created resources for people to start an orphan care ministry in their church; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAdvocates went right within their church. We have all the material and all of the kind of information to help get that started within your own church\u2014to begin to come alongside families that have a heart for adoption or just to even make them aware of what God\u2019s doing in the hearts of people\u2014around the world, within the country, in churches\u2014around this caring for the fatherless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We have a link on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com. If people want to go to our website, they can link up and find out about all that God is doing through the ministry of Show Hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Steven, you\u2019ve been in music now\u2014what?\u201430 years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Next year\u20141987, my first record came out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>So 2017 will be 30 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have just released\u2014I would say, for you, it\u2019s a little bit of a shift\u2014but in some ways it isn\u2019t, because your music has always moved people to worship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s\u2014yes; it\u2019s interesting, because we\u2019ve been\u2014the record label, and publicist, and all that\u2014we\u2019ve been referencing this new <em>Worship and Believe<\/em> project as my first worship album. I always feel like I have to correct that and say, \u201cWell, I feel like every song I\u2019ve written \/ every album I\u2019ve made is a worship album.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut in the sense of corporate singing these songs together\u2014declaring the Word of God set to music \/ what the Psalms have been for me\u2014just dropping anchor, as I call it, in the promises of God\u2014this new project really has been written from that place. Nobody knows this any better than you; because we\u2019ve sat here, across from the table with microphones in front of us, and talked about this quite a bit over the last few years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was eight years ago when we lost Maria, our youngest daughter, in a tragic accident. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was in those darkest moments\u2014in the moments of just absolute, deepest places of grief and the deepest valleys that\u2014when I couldn\u2019t even complete a thought \/ when I didn\u2019t know how I was going to survive and how I was going to lead my family through this darkness\u2014and really, literally, the earliest moments even\u2014still right there, at the hospital, knowing that Maria had gone on to be with Jesus\u2014that I just had nothing else that I could say, or speak, or whisper, or think. It all came down to one thing. I just had to say: \u201cBlessed be the name of the Lord. I\u2019m going to worship You, God. I\u2019m going to trust You\u2014I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to take my next step or my next breath.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe only clear thought I could have in the midst of that was\u2014out of absolute desperation\u2014was just: \u201cI\u2019m going to declare, God, that You are good and that You are faithful. I\u2019m going to worship You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is literally what kept me alive and has all of these last eight years. That\u2019s really where these\u2014when I say a worship album\u2014these songs that came from that place of just, \u201cI\u2019m going to drop anchor in the promises of God, declaring these things to be true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to talk with you about this; because we\u2019re now eight years, as you mentioned, since the death of your daughter. Tonight, I got a phone call with a friend who lost a child; and I\u2019ve just been praying and thinking about how I could comfort him. I know a good bit of it is just listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But if someone\u2019s listening right now, who is in a dark place\u2014and maybe it\u2019s not the loss of a child \/ maybe it\u2019s the loss of health, maybe it\u2019s the loss of a job, loss of a parent\u2014how would you put your arm around them and\u2014again, you\u2019ve already said it in many ways: \u201cGo to the Psalms,\u201d \u201cBelieve the truth about God \/ don\u2019t believe a lie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThere is a devil who will lie to you \/ he\u2019s a deceiver\u2014he\u2019ll whisper in your ear and say, \u2018God\u2019s not in charge \/ He\u2019s not in control\u2014blame God \/ charge God.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Job didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sounds like you ultimately got there as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; well, I mean, and you said it\u2014I think it\u2019s\u2014I\u2019ll sound like I\u2019m contradicting myself a little bit, but it\u2019s both. There are no words. I think the most comforting thing\u2014I\u2019ve said this to you before\u2014that people said to Mary Beth and me on our journey\u2014as crazy as it is\u2014is when people would just say: \u201cI don\u2019t have any words. I\u2019m just going to sit with you, and I\u2019m going to listen to you, and I\u2019m going to weep with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you just said it: \u201cDon\u2019t believe the lie that the enemy would tell us\u2014is: \u201cAnd this is all that\u2019s true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. This is where the father of lies comes along and says: \u201cGod\u2019s not there for you. He doesn\u2019t care about you. He does not want the best for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Right; yes\u2014or, \u201cHe\u2019s just absent,\u201d or \u201cHe doesn\u2019t even exist,\u201d or \u201cIt\u2019s all just a myth \/ it\u2019s just a fable to kind of\u2026\u201d\u2014you know, it\u2019s all of those things. For me, I\u2019ve come to realize that the pain \/ the grief is very real and very true\u2014and you may be in it\u2014and you\u2019re going to speak with your friend tonight who\u2019s in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, for us, it was those who would acknowledge that alongside us\u2014even if it was in their silence \/ to just sit with us. Then, in those right moments, to be able to hear God\u2019s voice\u2014maybe, it\u2019s through a friend; it\u2019s through the Psalms; for me, it was through that verse that a great friend and songwriter, who wrote, \u201cBlessed be Your name. You give; You take away\u2026\u201d\u2014you know, Matt Redman, who wrote the song, <em>Blessed Be Your Name<\/em>\u2014who set that verse to music. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just sing it, and hold onto it, and listen to it over and over again; because, for me, it was coming to that place to say: \u201cAs real and true as all the pain, and the sadness, and the grief is right now, the greater truth\u2014what\u2019s most true \/ what\u2019s most real\u2014is that God is for us, and God is good. His heart is good\u2014as much as, right now, everything is screaming at me: \u2018It is not good \/ God\u2019s not good. If He\u2019s good, how is this happening?\u2019\u201d I have to drop anchor in the promises of God\u2014that He is good, that He is for us, that He is with us, and hold onto that for dear life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI discovered something\u2014even as I was writing this album \/ putting these songs together\u2014and it was a verse in the story that I kind of knew from Scripture, but it came screaming back to me in this process. It was about Nebuchadnezzar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had lost his mind, you know, and there\u2019s this great verse\u2014I think it\u2019s in Daniel, if I\u2019m right\u2014where it\u2019s talking about King Nebuchadnezzar and it says, \u201cI lifted my eyes to heaven, and my sanity returned.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was literally like he worshipped\u2014he just lifted his eyes \/ he looked to God\u2014because, as he was looking at his circumstances and everything around him, he literally had gone insane \/ gone crazy\u2014that\u2019s the feeling of grief and, especially, just utter loss like that\u2014you feel like you\u2019re going crazy. Maybe, it\u2019s not even, like you said, loss of a child\u2014maybe it\u2019s a job or your marriage falling apart\u2014you just: \u201cI\u2019m losing my mind. I\u2019m going crazy.\u201d King Nebuchadnezzar just looked to heaven \/ he looked to God; and he said, \u201cAlright; I\u2019m going to turn my eyes to You, to trust and believe that You\u2019re God, that You\u2019re with me in this.\u201d \u201cHis sanity returned,\u201d\u2014it says\u2014\u201cand he worshipped God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a profound thing there\u2014in just choosing, like Job, to say: \u201cBlessed be the name of the Lord. I\u2019m going to worship Him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>On the back of my business card is a quote that some of our listeners, who are regulars here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> and tune us in quite frequently, hear me quote this statement by Tom Skinner. Tom Skinner grew up in Brooklyn\u2014he was a gang member; his dad was a preacher; he came to faith, listening to the radio; then walked out of the gang, with his life being threatened, saying: \u201cI\u2019ve come to faith in Christ; I can no longer do this thing.\u201d Went on to be the chaplain of the Washington Redskins, and he impacted a young man\u2019s life\u2014mine\u2014back in 1969. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe started and ended five messages, Steven, with this quote at the beginning of the message and at the end of the message. It was <em>exactly<\/em> where I was living, because I think\u2014not just me \/ I\u2019m not the only one who struggles with doubt\u2014I think all kinds of believers struggle with doubt. They\u2019re wondering, \u201cWhat do you do with doubt?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, here\u2019s what he said\u2014he said: \u201cI spent a long time trying to come to grips with my doubts when, suddenly, I realized I had better come to grips with what I believe. I have since moved from the agony of questions that I cannot answer to the reality of answers that I cannot escape, and it\u2019s a great relief.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Wow; wow. That\u2019s so good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Doesn\u2019t that capture most of life?\u2014because you\u2019re going to have doubts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cIs God there? Is He good?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And here\u2019s what I\u2019d want our listeners to know\u2014and I just, personally\u2014I don\u2019t think God is threatened by our doubts. I don\u2019t think He\u2019s threatened by our anger. I don\u2019t think\u2014you know, I don\u2019t think God is this weakling, who gets upset because we go through a period of forsaking Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think He\u2019s after us\u2014He wants to love us \/ He wants us to experience that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, the Psalms\u2014that\u2019s a great place to go, because the psalmist expressed it all; didn\u2019t he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Just the honesty\u2014I mean, so much of the Psalms and so many Scriptures that I\u2019d read a thousand times\u2014\u201cBut until you\u2019re in that place,\u201d\u2014like my pastor, Scotty Smith, says\u2014\u201ccan we really cry, \u2018Abba! Father!\u2019 \/ can we really cry that cry: \u2018Father! Daddy!\u2019 \/ cry out to God\u2014until we first cry, \u2018Uncle!\u2019\u2014you know, until we\u2019re in a place where we\u2019re so desperate to say: \u2018I give. I\u2019m done. It\u2019s over. Now, God, save me, \/ Father, help me,\u2019\u2014until we\u2019re at that place of desperation.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think even going back and seeing so many places in the Psalms where David was saying: \u201cGod, You\u2019ve left me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>\u201cI feel alone.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then there\u2019s that amazing encouragement to pour your heart out to God\u2014not just the good, Christian stuff out to God \/ you know, \u201cGod, I love You,\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re good,\u201d\u2014but: \u201cGod, I don\u2019t get this. I don\u2019t understand it. I\u2019m confused. I\u2019m angry. I\u2019m hurting.\u201d You know, \u201cThis isn\u2019t right. This isn\u2019t right\u2014I\u2019m going to pour all that out to You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, again\u2014back to the Psalms\u2014there was a point where, all of a sudden, for me, it was another light bulb that went off\u2014when the psalmist says, \u201cSoul, why are you so downcast in me?\u201d He began to ask the right questions. Instead of, \u201cGod where are You?\u201d it was: \u201cSoul\/heart, wait a minute. Why are you so downcast within me? Hope in God.\u201d You know, that was the psalmist\u2019s advice to himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was talking to himself \/ saying to his own soul\u2014I got this picture, and I had it many times in my own life, and still do\u2014where I\u2019m almost pounding on my own chest \/ kind of my heart, going: \u201cCome on, heart. Come on! Why are you so downcast? Why are you giving in to this hopelessness?\u201d because you\u2019re beginning to believe all those other lesser truths that are still true: \u201cLife\u2019s confusing, \u201cIt\u2019s a <em>mess<\/em> right now in our world,\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen in this country?\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen in this world?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>You know, all those things are true; but then there\u2019s this pounding on his own heart, going: \u201cBut wait a minute. Come on, heart. Come on, soul. Remember what\u2019s <em>most <\/em>true. Why are you so downcast? Hope in God! Put your hope in God \/ in the truth of who God is.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What you\u2019re talking about there is counseling your own soul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And there really is\u2014it sounds selfish \/ it really isn\u2019t\u2014is giving yourself the right <em>advice<\/em>, because there are voices. I read a book recently\u2014in fact, that was all about voices in your head\u2014and you have to counsel your own soul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and I think it also helps for you to be thinking, and meditating on, and saying out loud things that are true about who God is and about His involvement in our lives. I\u2019m just thinking about times when I have pulled out one of your CDs\u2014like the worship CD that you\u2019ve just recorded, <em>Worship and Believe<\/em>.
