There is\u2014among a lot of young men in their 20s\u2014there\u2019s a\u2014there\u2019s a failure to engage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s <em>safe<\/em> not to engage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. Actually, with the video games\u2014I think in video games; because I\u2019m a video game fan, actually\u2014a little bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> But what happens is\u2014you start to live out in the video games the reality that\u2019s much easier to control\u2014that you can\u2019t construct in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Huh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We should introduce our video game fan who is joining us here today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Peter and Kelli Worrall join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> It\u2019s good to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Thank you. Good to be back\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Glad you guys are back. They have written a book called, <em>20 Things We\u2019d Tell Our Twenty-Something Selves<\/em>. That explains what Bob was talking about a bit earlier. Both Kelli and Peter are professors at Moody Bible Institute. They\u2019ve been married all the way back to 1999. We\u2019ve been talking about their relationship and reflecting back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you [Peter] jumped right into this video game issue, because I hear you saying it\u2019s not that video games are bad\u2014it\u2019s when they replace real relationships?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. Actually, video games deal with a lot of problem solving. What happens is\u2014when you find that you can\u2019t solve those problems in real life, you go to an alternative life, which is the life you create online. Then you find that you <em>are<\/em> the champion; you <em>are<\/em> the victor; you <em>are<\/em> the real man in a computer game\u2014but you\u2019re not that same real man in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to encourage people to not level-up their character in a computer game but to level-up their real self. When I realized that, I put down my computer games\u2014and I switched over and thought, \u201cOkay; how can I increase myself as a teacher? How can I increase myself as an athlete? How can I increase myself in these ways?\u201d As you said\u2014to challenge somebody to be a sincere lover of a woman, <em>that<\/em> requires all kinds of sacrifice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s <em>really<\/em>dangerous!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s one thing to rescue a princess in a video game. It\u2019s another thing to go find a princess in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Peter, why is it that young men in their late 20s\u2014you were one of them at one point\u2014just can\u2019t get off the dime, and start a real relationship with a woman, and ask her to marry him, and get on with it? Why are they waiting so long? What\u2019s the fear?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Well, there is fear that this might not be \u201cthe one\u201d and there\u2019s fear that \u201cI\u2019m not the one\u2026yet.\u201d There are all kinds of fears about the girl\u2014that: \u201cWell, actually, she might not be this great in five year\u2019s time\u201d\u2014because of my consumer-selfish mindset. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you also said earlier, the fear of a relationship might fail\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014or \u201cOur marriage might end in\u2014in divorce,\u201d or \u201cIt might not work out.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So if you\u2019re sitting down with a young man, who is 25 years old, are you telling him, \u201cLet\u2019s get going!\u201d or are you telling him, \u2018Take your time; you\u2019ll know when it\u2019s right\u2019? How are you counseling him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> I\u2019m talking to him usually about God and himself\u2014those are the first two things\u2014and then about the woman. I\u2019m not usually talking to him about the woman first, and then himself, and then God; because that would all be backwards. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou often find the biggest question from me is: \u201cCan you love someone unconditionally?\u201d The answer I\u2019m looking for is, \u201cNo.\u201d Then I know that they\u2019re ready to surrender to the God, who can equip them. [Laughter] But you see\u2014when they\u2019re like, \u201cAw! Yeah! No; I mean, she\u2019s\u2014she\u2019s the best! I can\u2019t imagine anybody like <em>her<\/em>\u2014<em>ever!<\/em>\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] I think they\u2019re kind of in un-reality, where they\u2019re not going to die to themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys talk\u2014one of the pieces of advice you would give to your 20-something selves\u2014is about understanding and managing your emotions. That\u2019s what\u2014for <em>so<\/em> many 20-somethings\u2014that is\u2014love is just purely in that plane \/ it\u2019s the emotional plane. They have to understand love goes far beyond that point; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes; yes. It\u2019s a commitment, it\u2019s a sacrifice, it\u2019s an action, it\u2019s a verb\u2014we <em>do<\/em> it\u2014we don\u2019t <em>feel<\/em> it. I mean, there\u2019s the emotional component to it; but primarily, it\u2019s an action and a commitment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. The idea of: \u201cWell, you have to be authentic about your feelings. You let your <em>feelings<\/em> be expressed, and then you follow your feelings. They will lead you to the truth.\u201d This is in a lot of movies, where the person is repressed, emotionally. They start to express their emotions and that somehow leads them to truth. In many cases, in real life, it leads to addiction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn many cases, in real life, it leads to very serious negative consequences. So we advise people to evaluate their emotions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the first step in evaluating your emotions is\u2014you have to let yourself feel them and know what they are\u2014so suppressing your emotions and denying your emotions is not really an option. You say, \u201cWhat am I feeling right now?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Name it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Name it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Name it: \u201cI am feeling angry,\u201d or \u201cI am feeling happy,\u201d or \u201cI am feeling excited.\u201d For men, in particular, there is a whole bunch of vocabulary that we have to develop. We sometimes think, \u201cI have a backache.\u201d Maybe you could call that \u201cstressed.\u201d Use an emotional word for it rather than a physical word. Then evaluate, \u201cIs this appropriate for this situation right now?\u201d Now, if it\u2019s appropriate, then celebrate it! Run with it! Express it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if it\u2019s not appropriate, then bring it to God. Let\u2019s take an emotion\u2014like anxiety: \u201cWhat does God say?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says, \u201cCast all your anxieties on Me, because I care for you.\u201d \u201cWhat does He say?\u201d\u2014\u201cBe anxious for nothing.\u201d Because God says these things to us in Scripture, we\u2019re to follow it through. We <em>feel<\/em> the anxiety\u2014you can\u2019t give to God what you won\u2019t let yourself feel\u2014and then you express it and give it to God. You do it again, and again, and again. Favorite passage from Scripture on this is actually Jonah, Chapter 4, where Jonah is <em>furious <\/em>because the Ninevites are going to be able to survive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They repented.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> They repented. \u201cOh! [Laughter] That merciful God! That\u2019s terrible!\u201d Jonah knew exactly what He would do\u2014so he\u2019s angry \/ he\u2019s furious. And what does God say? Does God say: \u201cI want to affirm your anger \/ I just want you to <em>feel<\/em> it\u201d? \u201cNow, maybe I\u2019ll just hand over control to you so you can annihilate these people like you really want to.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe asks him a question\u2014He says, \u201cIs it <em>right<\/em> for you to feel angry?\u201d and He just leaves it at that. Now, the inference is: \u201cIt\u2019s not right.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen later, in the same chapter, He asks again, \u201cIs it <em>right<\/em> for you to feel angry?\u201d He\u2019s trying to show Jonah that he\u2019s in a place, which is not appropriate for him; and he needs to change his condition, which his emotions are indicating. His emotions come second to his will.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Several weeks ago, I was getting ready to go to bed. There was something that just had me ticked off. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Can we ask what it is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> [Laughing] We will leave that; okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; you can\u2019t! You can\u2019t\u2014you can <em>ask<\/em> but [Laughter] I\u2019m not answering! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But the point is\u2014I did a little bit of what you\u2019re saying there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014I said, \u201cSo, what is it I\u2019m feeling here?\u201d I decided to sleep on it. And the next day, I woke up; and I thought, \u201cYou know, it was a good thing I didn\u2019t express what I was feeling\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto the person that I would have expressed it to.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Especially if it was my wife! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I had a suspicion that might be what was going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Also, I think you said something about it\u2014name your emotion; and then, if you can, celebrate the emotion \/ express it! But express it in a way that doesn\u2019t damage the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s really good\u2014ask the question. This is what you said: \u201cAsk the question, \u2018Is what I\u2019m feeling appropriate in this situation?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cfor this situation?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s a powerful question to ask; because, oftentimes, we go, \u201cThis is just pure selfishness oozing out of me\u2014the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe feeling I\u2019m having right here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What hit me was\u2014it\u2019s taken me 40 \/ almost 44 years of marriage! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Speaking of love being a long-term commitment and learning how to love. It\u2019s taken me <em>that long<\/em> to finally get it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I feel like such a first grader!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You with me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.Aw; yes! That\u2019s how we felt writing this book! We wanted to get back and we wanted to address those issues so that somebody didn\u2019t have to have such a <em>long<\/em> time learning some of these things as we did\u2014hopefully.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> One of the things\u2014and by the way\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we\u2019re talking to Peter and Kelli Worrall, who have written a book called <em>20 Things We\u2019d Tell Our Twenty-Something Selves<\/em>. You can go online at FamilyLifeToday.com, or call 1-800-FL-TODAY if you want to get a copy and pass it on to a 20-something you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things, Kelli, that you address in this book is\u2014you would tell your 20-something self something about patience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is a lesson that, over two decades, has been a difficult one for you to learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> It\u2019s been a <em>very<\/em> difficult one. I think I\u2019m learning it again right <em>now<\/em>, oddly enough. Yes; in one way, I waited all of my 20s to be married\u2014I know some people wait much longer than that and are still waiting\u2014but it was a hard wait. Once we got married, we tried to have children and that didn\u2019t happen. For several years, we went through that process\u2014and went the infertility \/ experienced the infertility pain\u2014and I was waiting to be a mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen we started the adoption process. Our first adoption paperwork went over to China. We were told in 2006\u2014when that paperwork went to China\u2014that it would be 18 months and then we would be able to go pick up our daughter. Those 18 months turned into six years\u2014that was a very painful wait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, knowing what you know now\u2014if you could go back to your 20-something self and say: \u201cHere\u2019s what you need to learn about patience. Here\u2019s what you do when you get to those hard moments of infertility \/ those hard moments, when every month, there\u2019s a reminder you\u2019re not pregnant again this month\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014what would you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> You know, it probably sounds clich\u00e9, but going back to the sovereignty of God. I think we can\u2019t see that so often when we\u2019re in the midst of the trial \/ in the midst of the wait, but you do see it in hindsight. I see it all over my story, and I\u2019ll see it all over Scripture\u2014how God\u2019s timing is, so often, not our timing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have two precious children now through adoption. Had things happened in my timing, it wouldn\u2019t have been that way\u2014we wouldn\u2019t have had these kiddos\u2014and these are <em>my<\/em> kids. I know that. They\u2019re the kids that God hand-picked for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKind of a cool part of our story is that we sent our paperwork to China in 2006, like I said, and thought it would be 18 months. It turned into six years. In the midst of that six-year wait, we decided to pursue a second adoption domestically. Our son, Daryl, came to us when he was seven months old. He was in the foster system\u2014went into the foster system \/ so we were fostering him for three years, working through that journey. That\u2019s a <em>hard<\/em>, long journey and another exercise in patience and trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe cool part\u2014like the big GOD! on the end of our adoption journey was that, in January of 2012, we finally got Amelia\u2019s picture after six years of waiting\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we get our referral for her adoption. Then, in February, we get a letter from the Chinese embassy saying, \u201cYour finalization date is March 26, 2012.\u201d That was the date when that six-year adoption journey was going to finish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen just a week or so later, we went to a court in Chicago, with Daryl, to petition for his adoption. We stood in front of the judge, in Chicago, with him. The judge says, \u201cEverything looks good, and I will finalize this paperwork for you on March 26, 2012.\u201d On the same exact day\u2014one adoption journey took over three years \/ one over six years\u2014but on the same exact day, those two little kiddos became Worralls. It was just a precious detail that God gave me. To me, it was a message of: \u201cI was there all along. I had this. I had this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter: <\/strong>Yes. I think of the example of Joseph in Scripture. This is a very powerful example to me\u2014in that he was in prison \/ he hadn\u2019t done <em>anything<\/em> wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s got to wait there, in the jail. Then, at the beginning of Chapter 41 in Genesis, it says, \u201cOh; and \u2018two years later\u2026\u2019\u201d So at the end of Chapter 40, it says, \u201cThe cupbearer forgot him,\u201d and then two years later, he remembers him; and he\u2019s in jail! This is part of God\u2019s will \/ God\u2019s plan\u2014because a theme in Scripture, again and again, is the fullness of time\u2014that we don\u2019t know what God is doing. We don\u2019t know why God has brought that; and we can\u2019t think, \u201cOh; when that happens in the future\u2026\u201d because Joseph was faithful to God in the prison sentence \/ he was faithful to God in that moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were in infertility, we couldn\u2019t think: \u201cOh when we have a child\u2026\u201d \u201cWhen we have a child\u2026\u201d \u201cWhen we have a child\u2026\u201d We had to think, \u201cHow do we live God-focused \/ God-honoring lives without a child right now? How is our life meaningful in the present?\u201d not \u201cWhen do we start in the future?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re talking about the basis or the foundation of your faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And before we came in the studio, we were spending a little time together. You took us into your classroom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter: <\/strong>Yes; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014at Moody Bible Institute\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014with how many students would be in this classroom? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Thirty-five in two sections\u2014I teach 70 but in two sections of 35.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what would their ages be?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> They\u2019d be in their late teens\/early 20s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; and you run them through an exercise to teach them something incredibly profound.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. Well, what I do is\u2014I put a series of political issues on the board. I put same-sex marriage, abortion, the environment, social justice\u2014and I\u2019ll put these things on the board\u2014and I\u2019ll say to them, \u201cList these in order of importance.\u201d Now, I\u2019ll say immediately, \u201cI don\u2019t have a particular agenda with this,\u201d\u2014they just have to list them. They\u2019re talking about them for about 10\/15 minutes; and then I\u2019ll say, \u201cFreeze.\u201d And then, I\u2019ll say, \u201cOkay; how many of you mentioned God at all?\u201d This is at Moody Bible Institute. Then I\u2019ll say, \u201cHow many of you referenced Scripture to justify a position?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, what I point out is that they <em>say<\/em> that they love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength; but they\u2019ve been so thoroughly secularized that, even though they have a heart for God, it doesn\u2019t come through when they\u2019re evaluating these questions \/ these ideas. In examining our foundation, we have to have some way of seeing that: \u201cIs what we say\u2014that comes out of our mouth\u2014the reality of the way we live?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: \u201c<\/strong>Is the foundation of our faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe Bible?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: \u201c<\/strong>Are we thinking from the Bible to real life?\u201d or \u201cAre we thinking from real life back to the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. I actually\u2014I think that\u2019s a two-way street, but the most <em>important<\/em> one is thinking biblically\u2014is getting immersed in a daily devotional \/ surrender to God\u2019s Word so that it changes our life and informs every issue of life. But then, when I\u2019m going through life, I need to\u2014by my 20s\u2014just have some form of being able to see what\u2019s going on and say, \u201cWhat does the Bible have to say to this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt kind of goes from life to the Bible and from the Bible to life, but that\u2019s only going to happen if you <em>really <\/em>get into the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When you shared that with us, I immediately thought of the passage in John, Chapter 15, where Jesus said, \u201cAbide in Me and I in you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He goes on to say, \u201cIf My words abide in you\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; yes. It\u2019s powerful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He talks about living life at that point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and fellowshipping with Him. That\u2019s how we\u2019re going to draw life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014from the Bible and from Jesus Christ\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Oh; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because both are alive!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to ask you\u2014because I noticed, in going through your book\u2014you\u2019ve got the Bible study for this book online rather than integrated into the book. Was that a strategic choice you made?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> It was; it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought part of the shrewdness of what you did was\u2014you\u2019ve got a book here that I can give to somebody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014who may be marginally\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014spiritual.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> What Christian Smith calls the Post-Christian Moralistic Therapeutic Deist\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the person, who\u2019s in church, but is wandering away from the basic tenets\u2014this book is for them too. It doesn\u2019t use a lot of the \u201cChristian-ese\u201d because, quite frankly, we\u2019ve lost some of the 20-somethings in using some language that we haven\u2019t fully explained. We\u2019ve quoted verses at them to the point where they don\u2019t really understand what we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a Christ-centered conversation that has Kelli and me going back and forth about these issues that we raise. It\u2019s inviting a third person into the conversation, to say, \u201cWell, this is our experience\u2014how about you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In the Bible study that you\u2019ve got online\/on your website, now, you <em>can<\/em> get a little deeper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Oh; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014into what the Scriptures teach \/ into the specifics of the Bible\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014so that people see that this is not just a good idea that you had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014this is really God\u2019s wisdom here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And Bob, I want you to tell our listeners how to get a copy of the book. And then love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u201d So the greatest commandment is our heart-commitment\u2014is our focus and our orientation on God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that is the\u2014the one thing, in your 20s, from which everything else flows. If you\u2019re living for <em>you<\/em> and God is a player in <em>your<\/em> story, it\u2019s not going to go like it should.If you\u2019re living for <em>God<\/em>, and you are a player in <em>God<\/em>\u2019s story, then it will go like it\u2019s meant to; because it\u2019s all about God. This is His creation \/ this is His world. You are His child\u2014part of His plan\u2014\u201cMake God\u2019s glory your goal,\u201d is where I would launch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Kelli, you make a comment in this chapter of your book, that you used to recite a mantra that really revealed where your heart was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes; yes. It was actually when I direct plays at Moody, because it was such a public thing\u2014it was an expression of art. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut those expressions of art, especially, can become all about us and: \u201cWhat are people going to think about me?\u201d and \u201cAm I going to succeed?\u201d \u201cAm I going to fail?\u201d That sort of thought pattern can be very destructive, and damaging, and create a lot of anxiety. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo yes; I would recite: \u201cIt\u2019s not about me; it\u2019s all about Him.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not about me; it\u2019s all about Him.\u201d It came to\u2014\u201cEven if this play is a flop, if He gets the glory somehow in that, so be it; because it\u2019s not about me; it\u2019s all about Him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:5, \u201cFor what we proclaim is not ourselves but Jesus Christ, our Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kelli, Peter, thank you guys again for being with us today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to take just a minute here and say, \u201cHappy anniversary!\u201d to a couple of folks. Actually, with the video games\u2014I think in video games; because I\u2019m a video game fan, actually\u2014a little bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> But what happens is\u2014you start to live out in the video games the reality that\u2019s much easier to control\u2014that you can\u2019t construct in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Huh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We should introduce our video game fan who is joining us here today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Peter and Kelli Worrall join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Welcome back to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> It\u2019s good to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelly:<\/strong> Thank you. Good to be back\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Glad you guys are back. They have written a book called, <em>20 Things We\u2019d Tell Our Twenty-Something Selves<\/em>. That explains what Bob was talking about a bit earlier. Both Kelli and Peter are professors at Moody Bible Institute. They\u2019ve been married all the way back to 1999. We\u2019ve been talking about their relationship and reflecting back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you [Peter] jumped right into this video game issue, because I hear you saying it\u2019s not that video games are bad\u2014it\u2019s when they replace real relationships?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. Actually, video games deal with a lot of problem solving. What happens is\u2014when you find that you can\u2019t solve those problems in real life, you go to an alternative life, which is the life you create online. Then you find that you <em>are<\/em> the champion; you <em>are<\/em> the victor; you <em>are<\/em> the real man in a computer game\u2014but you\u2019re not that same real man in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to encourage people to not level-up their character in a computer game but to level-up their real self. When I realized that, I put down my computer games\u2014and I switched over and thought, \u201cOkay; how can I increase myself as a teacher? How can I increase myself as an athlete? How can I increase myself in these ways?\u201d As you said\u2014to challenge somebody to be a sincere lover of a woman, <em>that<\/em> requires all kinds of sacrifice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s <em>really<\/em>dangerous!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; it\u2019s one thing to rescue a princess in a video game. It\u2019s another thing to go find a princess in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Peter, why is it that young men in their late 20s\u2014you were one of them at one point\u2014just can\u2019t get off the dime, and start a real relationship with a woman, and ask her to marry him, and get on with it? Why are they waiting so long? What\u2019s the fear?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Well, there is fear that this might not be \u201cthe one\u201d and there\u2019s fear that \u201cI\u2019m not the one\u2026yet.\u201d There are all kinds of fears about the girl\u2014that: \u201cWell, actually, she might not be this great in five year\u2019s time\u201d\u2014because of my consumer-selfish mindset. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you also said earlier, the fear of a relationship might fail\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014or \u201cOur marriage might end in\u2014in divorce,\u201d or \u201cIt might not work out.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So if you\u2019re sitting down with a young man, who is 25 years old, are you telling him, \u201cLet\u2019s get going!\u201d or are you telling him, \u2018Take your time; you\u2019ll know when it\u2019s right\u2019? How are you counseling him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> I\u2019m talking to him usually about God and himself\u2014those are the first two things\u2014and then about the woman. I\u2019m not usually talking to him about the woman first, and then himself, and then God; because that would all be backwards. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou often find the biggest question from me is: \u201cCan you love someone unconditionally?\u201d The answer I\u2019m looking for is, \u201cNo.\u201d Then I know that they\u2019re ready to surrender to the God, who can equip them. [Laughter] But you see\u2014when they\u2019re like, \u201cAw! Yeah! No; I mean, she\u2019s\u2014she\u2019s the best! I can\u2019t imagine anybody like <em>her<\/em>\u2014<em>ever!<\/em>\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] I think they\u2019re kind of in un-reality, where they\u2019re not going to die to themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You guys talk\u2014one of the pieces of advice you would give to your 20-something selves\u2014is about understanding and managing your emotions. That\u2019s what\u2014for <em>so<\/em> many 20-somethings\u2014that is\u2014love is just purely in that plane \/ it\u2019s the emotional plane. They have to understand love goes far beyond that point; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes; yes. It\u2019s a commitment, it\u2019s a sacrifice, it\u2019s an action, it\u2019s a verb\u2014we <em>do<\/em> it\u2014we don\u2019t <em>feel<\/em> it. I mean, there\u2019s the emotional component to it; but primarily, it\u2019s an action and a commitment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. The idea of: \u201cWell, you have to be authentic about your feelings. You let your <em>feelings<\/em> be expressed, and then you follow your feelings. They will lead you to the truth.\u201d This is in a lot of movies, where the person is repressed, emotionally. They start to express their emotions and that somehow leads them to truth. In many cases, in real life, it leads to addiction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn many cases, in real life, it leads to very serious negative consequences. So we advise people to evaluate their emotions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the first step in evaluating your emotions is\u2014you have to let yourself feel them and know what they are\u2014so suppressing your emotions and denying your emotions is not really an option. You say, \u201cWhat am I feeling right now?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Name it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Name it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Name it: \u201cI am feeling angry,\u201d or \u201cI am feeling happy,\u201d or \u201cI am feeling excited.\u201d For men, in particular, there is a whole bunch of vocabulary that we have to develop. We sometimes think, \u201cI have a backache.\u201d Maybe you could call that \u201cstressed.\u201d Use an emotional word for it rather than a physical word. Then evaluate, \u201cIs this appropriate for this situation right now?\u201d Now, if it\u2019s appropriate, then celebrate it! Run with it! Express it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if it\u2019s not appropriate, then bring it to God. Let\u2019s take an emotion\u2014like anxiety: \u201cWhat does God say?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says, \u201cCast all your anxieties on Me, because I care for you.\u201d \u201cWhat does He say?\u201d\u2014\u201cBe anxious for nothing.\u201d Because God says these things to us in Scripture, we\u2019re to follow it through. We <em>feel<\/em> the anxiety\u2014you can\u2019t give to God what you won\u2019t let yourself feel\u2014and then you express it and give it to God. You do it again, and again, and again. Favorite passage from Scripture on this is actually Jonah, Chapter 4, where Jonah is <em>furious <\/em>because the Ninevites are going to be able to survive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They repented.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> They repented. \u201cOh! [Laughter] That merciful God! That\u2019s terrible!\u201d Jonah knew exactly what He would do\u2014so he\u2019s angry \/ he\u2019s furious. And what does God say? Does God say: \u201cI want to affirm your anger \/ I just want you to <em>feel<\/em> it\u201d? \u201cNow, maybe I\u2019ll just hand over control to you so you can annihilate these people like you really want to.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe asks him a question\u2014He says, \u201cIs it <em>right<\/em> for you to feel angry?\u201d and He just leaves it at that. Now, the inference is: \u201cIt\u2019s not right.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen later, in the same chapter, He asks again, \u201cIs it <em>right<\/em> for you to feel angry?\u201d He\u2019s trying to show Jonah that he\u2019s in a place, which is not appropriate for him; and he needs to change his condition, which his emotions are indicating. His emotions come second to his will.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Several weeks ago, I was getting ready to go to bed. There was something that just had me ticked off. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Can we ask what it is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> [Laughing] We will leave that; okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; you can\u2019t! You can\u2019t\u2014you can <em>ask<\/em> but [Laughter] I\u2019m not answering! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But the point is\u2014I did a little bit of what you\u2019re saying there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014I said, \u201cSo, what is it I\u2019m feeling here?\u201d I decided to sleep on it. And the next day, I woke up; and I thought, \u201cYou know, it was a good thing I didn\u2019t express what I was feeling\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cto the person that I would have expressed it to.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Especially if it was my wife! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I had a suspicion that might be what was going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Also, I think you said something about it\u2014name your emotion; and then, if you can, celebrate the emotion \/ express it! But express it in a way that doesn\u2019t damage the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s really good\u2014ask the question. This is what you said: \u201cAsk the question, \u2018Is what I\u2019m feeling appropriate in this situation?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cfor this situation?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s a powerful question to ask; because, oftentimes, we go, \u201cThis is just pure selfishness oozing out of me\u2014the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe feeling I\u2019m having right here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What hit me was\u2014it\u2019s taken me 40 \/ almost 44 years of marriage! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Speaking of love being a long-term commitment and learning how to love. It\u2019s taken me <em>that long<\/em> to finally get it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I feel like such a first grader!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You with me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.Aw; yes! That\u2019s how we felt writing this book! We wanted to get back and we wanted to address those issues so that somebody didn\u2019t have to have such a <em>long<\/em> time learning some of these things as we did\u2014hopefully.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> One of the things\u2014and by the way\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we\u2019re talking to Peter and Kelli Worrall, who have written a book called <em>20 Things We\u2019d Tell Our Twenty-Something Selves<\/em>. You can go online at FamilyLifeToday.com, or call 1-800-FL-TODAY if you want to get a copy and pass it on to a 20-something you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things, Kelli, that you address in this book is\u2014you would tell your 20-something self something about patience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is a lesson that, over two decades, has been a difficult one for you to learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> It\u2019s been a <em>very<\/em> difficult one. I think I\u2019m learning it again right <em>now<\/em>, oddly enough. Yes; in one way, I waited all of my 20s to be married\u2014I know some people wait much longer than that and are still waiting\u2014but it was a hard wait. Once we got married, we tried to have children and that didn\u2019t happen. For several years, we went through that process\u2014and went the infertility \/ experienced the infertility pain\u2014and I was waiting to be a mom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen we started the adoption process. Our first adoption paperwork went over to China. We were told in 2006\u2014when that paperwork went to China\u2014that it would be 18 months and then we would be able to go pick up our daughter. Those 18 months turned into six years\u2014that was a very painful wait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, knowing what you know now\u2014if you could go back to your 20-something self and say: \u201cHere\u2019s what you need to learn about patience. Here\u2019s what you do when you get to those hard moments of infertility \/ those hard moments, when every month, there\u2019s a reminder you\u2019re not pregnant again this month\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014what would you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> You know, it probably sounds clich\u00e9, but going back to the sovereignty of God. I think we can\u2019t see that so often when we\u2019re in the midst of the trial \/ in the midst of the wait, but you do see it in hindsight. I see it all over my story, and I\u2019ll see it all over Scripture\u2014how God\u2019s timing is, so often, not our timing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have two precious children now through adoption. Had things happened in my timing, it wouldn\u2019t have been that way\u2014we wouldn\u2019t have had these kiddos\u2014and these are <em>my<\/em> kids. I know that. They\u2019re the kids that God hand-picked for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKind of a cool part of our story is that we sent our paperwork to China in 2006, like I said, and thought it would be 18 months. It turned into six years. In the midst of that six-year wait, we decided to pursue a second adoption domestically. Our son, Daryl, came to us when he was seven months old. He was in the foster system\u2014went into the foster system \/ so we were fostering him for three years, working through that journey. That\u2019s a <em>hard<\/em>, long journey and another exercise in patience and trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe cool part\u2014like the big GOD! on the end of our adoption journey was that, in January of 2012, we finally got Amelia\u2019s picture after six years of waiting\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we get our referral for her adoption. Then, in February, we get a letter from the Chinese embassy saying, \u201cYour finalization date is March 26, 2012.\u201d That was the date when that six-year adoption journey was going to finish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen just a week or so later, we went to a court in Chicago, with Daryl, to petition for his adoption. We stood in front of the judge, in Chicago, with him. The judge says, \u201cEverything looks good, and I will finalize this paperwork for you on March 26, 2012.\u201d On the same exact day\u2014one adoption journey took over three years \/ one over six years\u2014but on the same exact day, those two little kiddos became Worralls. It was just a precious detail that God gave me. To me, it was a message of: \u201cI was there all along. I had this. I had this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter: <\/strong>Yes. I think of the example of Joseph in Scripture. This is a very powerful example to me\u2014in that he was in prison \/ he hadn\u2019t done <em>anything<\/em> wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s got to wait there, in the jail. Then, at the beginning of Chapter 41 in Genesis, it says, \u201cOh; and \u2018two years later\u2026\u2019\u201d So at the end of Chapter 40, it says, \u201cThe cupbearer forgot him,\u201d and then two years later, he remembers him; and he\u2019s in jail! This is part of God\u2019s will \/ God\u2019s plan\u2014because a theme in Scripture, again and again, is the fullness of time\u2014that we don\u2019t know what God is doing. We don\u2019t know why God has brought that; and we can\u2019t think, \u201cOh; when that happens in the future\u2026\u201d because Joseph was faithful to God in the prison sentence \/ he was faithful to God in that moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were in infertility, we couldn\u2019t think: \u201cOh when we have a child\u2026\u201d \u201cWhen we have a child\u2026\u201d \u201cWhen we have a child\u2026\u201d We had to think, \u201cHow do we live God-focused \/ God-honoring lives without a child right now? How is our life meaningful in the present?\u201d not \u201cWhen do we start in the future?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re talking about the basis or the foundation of your faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And before we came in the studio, we were spending a little time together. You took us into your classroom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter: <\/strong>Yes; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014at Moody Bible Institute\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014with how many students would be in this classroom? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Thirty-five in two sections\u2014I teach 70 but in two sections of 35.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what would their ages be?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> They\u2019d be in their late teens\/early 20s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay; and you run them through an exercise to teach them something incredibly profound.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. Well, what I do is\u2014I put a series of political issues on the board. I put same-sex marriage, abortion, the environment, social justice\u2014and I\u2019ll put these things on the board\u2014and I\u2019ll say to them, \u201cList these in order of importance.\u201d Now, I\u2019ll say immediately, \u201cI don\u2019t have a particular agenda with this,\u201d\u2014they just have to list them. They\u2019re talking about them for about 10\/15 minutes; and then I\u2019ll say, \u201cFreeze.\u201d And then, I\u2019ll say, \u201cOkay; how many of you mentioned God at all?\u201d This is at Moody Bible Institute. Then I\u2019ll say, \u201cHow many of you referenced Scripture to justify a position?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, what I point out is that they <em>say<\/em> that they love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength; but they\u2019ve been so thoroughly secularized that, even though they have a heart for God, it doesn\u2019t come through when they\u2019re evaluating these questions \/ these ideas. In examining our foundation, we have to have some way of seeing that: \u201cIs what we say\u2014that comes out of our mouth\u2014the reality of the way we live?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: \u201c<\/strong>Is the foundation of our faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe Bible?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: \u201c<\/strong>Are we thinking from the Bible to real life?\u201d or \u201cAre we thinking from real life back to the Bible?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes. I actually\u2014I think that\u2019s a two-way street, but the most <em>important<\/em> one is thinking biblically\u2014is getting immersed in a daily devotional \/ surrender to God\u2019s Word so that it changes our life and informs every issue of life. But then, when I\u2019m going through life, I need to\u2014by my 20s\u2014just have some form of being able to see what\u2019s going on and say, \u201cWhat does the Bible have to say to this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt kind of goes from life to the Bible and from the Bible to life, but that\u2019s only going to happen if you <em>really <\/em>get into the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When you shared that with us, I immediately thought of the passage in John, Chapter 15, where Jesus said, \u201cAbide in Me and I in you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He goes on to say, \u201cIf My words abide in you\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes; yes. It\u2019s powerful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He talks about living life at that point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and fellowshipping with Him. That\u2019s how we\u2019re going to draw life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014from the Bible and from Jesus Christ\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Oh; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because both are alive!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to ask you\u2014because I noticed, in going through your book\u2014you\u2019ve got the Bible study for this book online rather than integrated into the book. Was that a strategic choice you made?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> It was; it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought part of the shrewdness of what you did was\u2014you\u2019ve got a book here that I can give to somebody\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014who may be marginally\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014spiritual.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> What Christian Smith calls the Post-Christian Moralistic Therapeutic Deist\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the person, who\u2019s in church, but is wandering away from the basic tenets\u2014this book is for them too. It doesn\u2019t use a lot of the \u201cChristian-ese\u201d because, quite frankly, we\u2019ve lost some of the 20-somethings in using some language that we haven\u2019t fully explained. We\u2019ve quoted verses at them to the point where they don\u2019t really understand what we\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a Christ-centered conversation that has Kelli and me going back and forth about these issues that we raise. It\u2019s inviting a third person into the conversation, to say, \u201cWell, this is our experience\u2014how about you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In the Bible study that you\u2019ve got online\/on your website, now, you <em>can<\/em> get a little deeper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Oh; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014into what the Scriptures teach \/ into the specifics of the Bible\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014so that people see that this is not just a good idea that you had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014this is really God\u2019s wisdom here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And Bob, I want you to tell our listeners how to get a copy of the book. And then love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u201d So the greatest commandment is our heart-commitment\u2014is our focus and our orientation on God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that is the\u2014the one thing, in your 20s, from which everything else flows. If you\u2019re living for <em>you<\/em> and God is a player in <em>your<\/em> story, it\u2019s not going to go like it should.If you\u2019re living for <em>God<\/em>, and you are a player in <em>God<\/em>\u2019s story, then it will go like it\u2019s meant to; because it\u2019s all about God. This is His creation \/ this is His world. You are His child\u2014part of His plan\u2014\u201cMake God\u2019s glory your goal,\u201d is where I would launch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Kelli, you make a comment in this chapter of your book, that you used to recite a mantra that really revealed where your heart was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kelli:<\/strong> Yes; yes. It was actually when I direct plays at Moody, because it was such a public thing\u2014it was an expression of art. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut those expressions of art, especially, can become all about us and: \u201cWhat are people going to think about me?\u201d and \u201cAm I going to succeed?\u201d \u201cAm I going to fail?\u201d That sort of thought pattern can be very destructive, and damaging, and create a lot of anxiety. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo yes; I would recite: \u201cIt\u2019s not about me; it\u2019s all about Him.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not about me; it\u2019s all about Him.\u201d It came to\u2014\u201cEven if this play is a flop, if He gets the glory somehow in that, so be it; because it\u2019s not about me; it\u2019s all about Him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:5, \u201cFor what we proclaim is not ourselves but Jesus Christ, our Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Peter:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kelli, Peter, thank you guys again for being with us today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to take just a minute here and say, \u201cHappy anniversary!\u201d to a couple of folks.
