Motherhood is hard\u2014you\u2019re trying to do it all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014a little stressed out. But there was a gradual isolation that was happening in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said earlier that it was about six weeks before the bottom dropped out that you started to tune into the fact that \u201cSomething\u2019s not good in our marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you remember when that thought first hit you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>It was around Thanksgiving. I remember we had college kids over for Thanksgiving, who didn\u2019t have family close. One of them asked how we met\u2014they wanted to hear our love story of meeting on the ski trip and falling in love. I love to tell that story\u2014so I\u2019m telling the story. He walks by and hears me telling the story; and he goes, \u201cUgh, you\u2019re telling that stupid story again.\u201d I remember hearing him say that and just\u2014it was like a bullet into my chest. [Emotion in voice] I knew something was wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought maybe he was just a little grumpy, but he had been thinking of leaving me and not told me that. So he had that on his mind\u2014that \u201cWhat day? Maybe tomorrow; maybe next week; maybe we\u2019ll get through Christmas,\u201d\u2014but he had it already in his mind: \u201cI\u2019m leaving her.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I didn\u2019t know that. The weight of that was almost more than I could bear. I began trying to fix everything\u2014trying to fix me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let me stop you for a second. Jeremy, what occurred in your life that you had started moving toward separation, divorce, leaving your kids? I mean\u2014you\u2019re surrounded by the Christian community; and yet, you\u2019re visiting a place that is in direct contradiction to everything the Christian faith represents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that you\u2019d never imagined you\u2019d go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I think that I was separating. This was just where I was at\u2014at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I was at a dark place, but I was separating being a good dad from being married to Tiffany. I was very involved in my children\u2019s lives. I was like: \u201cYou know what? I can be a good dad without being married to her. I don\u2019t have to be in this relationship to be a good dad,\u201d which I know was a lie that I was telling myself to just sort of justify what I was feeling \/ to justify the disconnect. I think that I had just gotten to the place where, no matter what she said, I was upset\u2014I was just <em>done<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, was the word, \u201cdivorce,\u201d ever uttered by either one of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>It was not until that November. In fact, it was one of those things that we had said when we were dating\u2014we would <em>never<\/em> discuss it \/ never even utter the word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Not even joke about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>So, until that\u2014I guess, the couple of days after Thanksgiving was probably the first time that it was mentioned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you brought it up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>I had strep throat, and he\u2019s such a caregiver\u2014he gets that from his mother. I had strep throat; so I had asked him to bring in my antibiotic to me. He kind of slammed it down on the nightstand and said, \u201cHere\u2019s your medicine.\u201d And he just kind of walked out. I texted him and I said: \u201cYou\u2019re not yourself. I know that I\u2019m sick and I might be a little needy right now, but something\u2019s wrong. That\u2019s not like you to be so unkind.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe responded back with a text that said, \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking of leaving you, and I don\u2019t even know how to bring it up.\u201d I texted back and said, \u201cThis is a <em>horrible<\/em> joke,\u201d\u2014that\u2014\u201cYou better be joking.\u201d He said: \u201cI am not joking. I don\u2019t know how to separate from you, because I would miss the kids too much; but it\u2019s been on my mind for awhile.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI call him, and he answers. He said, \u201cWe\u2019ll have to talk about this later.\u201d I said: \u201cNo; we will talk about it right now. This is groundbreaking\/life-changing. We\u2019ve never even joked about something like this.\u201d He had just kind of, I think, spiritually had kind of checked out. I didn\u2019t see that, because I was super overwhelmed in motherhood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few weeks later, he physically left. It was just a few weeks later\u2014two days after Christmas. It was the worst Christmas ever\u2014I mean, I had bought him a new wedding ring; because one had been lost in this Muddy Buddy thing that you do where you crawl through the mud, which was completely innocent that it fell off of his hand. I was literally grasping at anything that Christmas\u2014like, \u201cHere\u2019s a new wedding ring.\u201d I got him some dog tags if he ever had an accident riding his bike\u2014just different things that were just showing him, \u201cHow well I knew you,\u201d\u2014bought him his favorite kinds of undershirts. In his stocking, he has a few quirky things that\u2014he\u2019s just a huge fan of ChapStick<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and toothpicks, and original Crest<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> toothpaste.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, okay, okay; stop! [Laughter] Jeremy\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she has <em>slathered<\/em> it on at Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>She did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And two days later, you pack up and leave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>He was done; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take us to that day. What were you thinking, and how did you do that? I mean, what a time of the year to disappear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I think we barely made it through Christmas. She got all that stuff, but it was just sort of opened and put to the side; because there was no emotion there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>All the darkness that he had now welcomed into his life was pulling him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>It was pulling me away. I honestly\u2014it was like: \u201cI\u2019m going to make it through Christmas, and that\u2019s it! That\u2019s all I can do.\u201d So on December 27, we were separated; and it literally all came crashing down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The toothpaste\u2014I\u2019m not trying to be funny here\u2014but the toothpaste, and the toothpicks, and the ChapStick didn\u2019t stir anything in you to cause you to go, \u201cThis is 11 years I\u2019m about to just cash in on.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>No, because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>I think it almost made him resentful\u2014of like: \u201cWhy would she buy all this stuff? I hate that she knows me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had already left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I had left. I had entirely left, because it was\u2014at that point, we were so apart that those reminders that we were together were just sort of annoyances rather than\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were numb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I was numb to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, how did you sit down with three kids and say, \u201cDad\u2019s leaving\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t. You know, I think that God protected our children during this time. We got with the counselor; and the counselor said: \u201cI think that you don\u2019t need to talk with your children about this at all right now. I think that you need to work on this and continue to work on this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf there\u2019s ever a chance of having any hope, then leave them out of this at the time being.\u201d So, that\u2019s what we did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll stop you there\u2014\u201cEver a chance of any hope.\u201d So there had to be a glimmer of hope there\u2014that you were protecting your kids in the midst of this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I think that God used that. I don\u2019t know how, because I was in a very dark place. I don\u2019t know how that happened, but it did; and I\u2019m <em>extremely<\/em> thankful for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>They were\u2014just for anyone listening with children\u2014they were three, five, and seven. I realize that, when children are significantly older than that, you can\u2019t just hide that from them. But at three, five, and almost seven, I got really creative with the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Tiffany told them that I was working on a project.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>They were used to the term, \u201cproject,\u201d because of my career and his career\u2014being self-employed and creating things\u2014they were familiar. I was like: \u201cDaddy has a really important project out at Pop\u2019s and Nana\u2019s. It\u2019s just better for him to be there right now, because this project is so big.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe project was the project of his heart, and I was holding onto hope [Emotion in voice].\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So did you tell your dad? You had to tell your dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Yes; I told him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Oh, yes; he sat down and told his whole family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I told my whole family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And?\u2014what did they say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Well, they were all very upset. They sat around and prayed for me, which I didn\u2019t really want. You know, they really wanted us to work through our issues. They didn\u2019t want us to just jump back in to things\u2014they wanted us to work on issues. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know, I sat down with my mom and dad, and brother and sister, and other sister, and husbands and wives, and told them all what was going on and that we were separating. You know, it was a rough time \/ it was a really rough time. You know, my parents\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>They were Team Jeremy and Tiffany. That is <em>so<\/em> important if your family member is going through something like this. They didn\u2019t take a side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>They were never for me, ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They were on the side of the two of you together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>\u2014of <em>us<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>The two of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Yes. No one in my family was: \u201cWell, Jeremy, I\u2019ve seen this. You know, you had every right.\u201d That was difficult, because I think most people would expect their family to be for them and only for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Unpack that a bit. How was that difficult for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Well, because it made me feel like, \u201cIf they\u2019re Team Jeremy and Tiffany, and there is no more Jeremy and Tiffany, what does that look like?\u201d You know, \u201cThis is my family; and they\u2019re telling me, \u2018All we\u2019re for is Jeremy and Tiffany.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They recognized that you two were one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes; for sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they were still going to treat you as both\u2014you know, I think that\u2019s brilliant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Well, my mother-in-law\u2014I remember her saying: \u201cIf this goes down, and he continues to live in darkness, you and the children will come at Christmas. He can come by some other time.\u201d So she wasn\u2019t taking my side, but she stood for truth\u2014she said, \u201cYou\u2019re my daughter-in-law forever,\u201d and I will ever be grateful for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, this is a horrific \/ a grieving moment. I just can\u2019t even describe the emotions that are here in the studio when I\u2019m hearing you two share about; but the power of your family\u2019s belief in you two, as a couple. I don\u2019t think you realize that may, not only have just rescued your marriage, but may be used by others, who are listening, to this\u2014because divorce is rampant in our nation. Their families wonder: \u201cWhat do you do? How do you relate?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019ve drawn here is a very practical way of standing for marriage in a loving way\u2014not throwing stones at the person who\u2019s leaving\u2014but still loving them \/ but letting them know: \u201cIt\u2019s Team Jeremy and Tiffany. We\u2019re for this union; because there used to be two individuals \/ now, there are two individuals who\u2019ve become one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I just have to ask\u2014you said, Tiffany, that you got creative with the truth with the kids; but on December 27, when you went to bed that night, you couldn\u2019t get creative with the truth with yourself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>No. We just didn\u2019t discuss it. In fact, it was like a funeral, almost, that night; because our closest net group of friends all came to the house. They were all gathered around my bed\u2014I don\u2019t know why we were in my room, but we happened to be in there. I was just sitting on the bed, crying; and they were gathered around me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we talked about was forgiveness, and all we talked about was hope, and that God\u2019s bigger than this. There was a lot of truth coming at me, saying: \u201cOkay; Jeremy\u2019s doing this, this, and this; and that\u2019s wrong. He\u2019s doing it in response to some things that are not all your fault, but some of them are things that you pushed him to. So what can you own?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust this community came together and said: \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been afraid to tell you that you\u2019re really selfish. We\u2019ve been afraid to tell you that you talk too much. We\u2019ve been afraid to tell you that you seem completely unavailable and too busy all the time.\u201d Those were painful to hear, because I\u2019m already kind of digesting that my husband has left; but I will never, ever be able to say how much love I felt from friends\u2014[Emotion in voice]\u2014friends who love you enough to say what\u2019s hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy best friend in the whole world\u2014Meliss was like: \u201cWe\u2019re going to talk about you. What can you own? Because whether you divorce or not, you\u2019re going to take this into the future\u2014or your next marriage, or your next marriage. You\u2019re going to take all of that if you don\u2019t deal with some of it now.\u201d She kind of helped me work on me\u2014which was the only thing I could control \/ which is the only thing any of us can control\u2014is us. To have a community in my life that would do that has so much to do with why we can tell you this story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>\u2014which goes back to why it\u2019s important to have community in the first place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said it felt like a funeral, and it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>It was. It was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because a marriage had died.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>It had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But as you tell in the book, <em>Need You Now<\/em>, the death was not the end.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what I want our listeners to hear in this is that neither Jeremy\u2019s family nor their friends, who surrounded you, Tiffany, took sides.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the message of this for the Christian community is: \u201cLove somebody enough to tell them the truth. Don\u2019t bad-mouth the person who\u2019s leaving. Love them too. This is where the Christian message\u2014it\u2019s a message of Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cLife comes out of death.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Do we believe that or not?! Yes! The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you\u2014the Holy Spirit\u2014and He can do something new in a broken, dead marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we have seen that happen so many times at our <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>marriage getaways, where couples come with a loss of hope and with no idea how to repair the damage that\u2019s been done. God meets them there and provides both help and hope through His Word and through the work of the Spirit in their lives. Motherhood is hard\u2014you\u2019re trying to do it all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014a little stressed out. But there was a gradual isolation that was happening in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said earlier that it was about six weeks before the bottom dropped out that you started to tune into the fact that \u201cSomething\u2019s not good in our marriage.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Do you remember when that thought first hit you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>It was around Thanksgiving. I remember we had college kids over for Thanksgiving, who didn\u2019t have family close. One of them asked how we met\u2014they wanted to hear our love story of meeting on the ski trip and falling in love. I love to tell that story\u2014so I\u2019m telling the story. He walks by and hears me telling the story; and he goes, \u201cUgh, you\u2019re telling that stupid story again.\u201d I remember hearing him say that and just\u2014it was like a bullet into my chest. [Emotion in voice] I knew something was wrong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought maybe he was just a little grumpy, but he had been thinking of leaving me and not told me that. So he had that on his mind\u2014that \u201cWhat day? Maybe tomorrow; maybe next week; maybe we\u2019ll get through Christmas,\u201d\u2014but he had it already in his mind: \u201cI\u2019m leaving her.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I didn\u2019t know that. The weight of that was almost more than I could bear. I began trying to fix everything\u2014trying to fix me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Let me stop you for a second. Jeremy, what occurred in your life that you had started moving toward separation, divorce, leaving your kids? I mean\u2014you\u2019re surrounded by the Christian community; and yet, you\u2019re visiting a place that is in direct contradiction to everything the Christian faith represents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And that you\u2019d never imagined you\u2019d go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I think that I was separating. This was just where I was at\u2014at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I was at a dark place, but I was separating being a good dad from being married to Tiffany. I was very involved in my children\u2019s lives. I was like: \u201cYou know what? I can be a good dad without being married to her. I don\u2019t have to be in this relationship to be a good dad,\u201d which I know was a lie that I was telling myself to just sort of justify what I was feeling \/ to justify the disconnect. I think that I had just gotten to the place where, no matter what she said, I was upset\u2014I was just <em>done<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, was the word, \u201cdivorce,\u201d ever uttered by either one of you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>It was not until that November. In fact, it was one of those things that we had said when we were dating\u2014we would <em>never<\/em> discuss it \/ never even utter the word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Not even joke about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>So, until that\u2014I guess, the couple of days after Thanksgiving was probably the first time that it was mentioned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you brought it up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>I had strep throat, and he\u2019s such a caregiver\u2014he gets that from his mother. I had strep throat; so I had asked him to bring in my antibiotic to me. He kind of slammed it down on the nightstand and said, \u201cHere\u2019s your medicine.\u201d And he just kind of walked out. I texted him and I said: \u201cYou\u2019re not yourself. I know that I\u2019m sick and I might be a little needy right now, but something\u2019s wrong. That\u2019s not like you to be so unkind.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe responded back with a text that said, \u201cI\u2019ve been thinking of leaving you, and I don\u2019t even know how to bring it up.\u201d I texted back and said, \u201cThis is a <em>horrible<\/em> joke,\u201d\u2014that\u2014\u201cYou better be joking.\u201d He said: \u201cI am not joking. I don\u2019t know how to separate from you, because I would miss the kids too much; but it\u2019s been on my mind for awhile.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI call him, and he answers. He said, \u201cWe\u2019ll have to talk about this later.\u201d I said: \u201cNo; we will talk about it right now. This is groundbreaking\/life-changing. We\u2019ve never even joked about something like this.\u201d He had just kind of, I think, spiritually had kind of checked out. I didn\u2019t see that, because I was super overwhelmed in motherhood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few weeks later, he physically left. It was just a few weeks later\u2014two days after Christmas. It was the worst Christmas ever\u2014I mean, I had bought him a new wedding ring; because one had been lost in this Muddy Buddy thing that you do where you crawl through the mud, which was completely innocent that it fell off of his hand. I was literally grasping at anything that Christmas\u2014like, \u201cHere\u2019s a new wedding ring.\u201d I got him some dog tags if he ever had an accident riding his bike\u2014just different things that were just showing him, \u201cHow well I knew you,\u201d\u2014bought him his favorite kinds of undershirts. In his stocking, he has a few quirky things that\u2014he\u2019s just a huge fan of ChapStick<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and toothpicks, and original Crest<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> toothpaste.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay, okay, okay; stop! [Laughter] Jeremy\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014she has <em>slathered<\/em> it on at Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>She did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And two days later, you pack up and leave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>He was done; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Take us to that day. What were you thinking, and how did you do that? I mean, what a time of the year to disappear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I think we barely made it through Christmas. She got all that stuff, but it was just sort of opened and put to the side; because there was no emotion there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>All the darkness that he had now welcomed into his life was pulling him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>It was pulling me away. I honestly\u2014it was like: \u201cI\u2019m going to make it through Christmas, and that\u2019s it! That\u2019s all I can do.\u201d So on December 27, we were separated; and it literally all came crashing down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The toothpaste\u2014I\u2019m not trying to be funny here\u2014but the toothpaste, and the toothpicks, and the ChapStick didn\u2019t stir anything in you to cause you to go, \u201cThis is 11 years I\u2019m about to just cash in on.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>No, because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>I think it almost made him resentful\u2014of like: \u201cWhy would she buy all this stuff? I hate that she knows me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had already left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I had left. I had entirely left, because it was\u2014at that point, we were so apart that those reminders that we were together were just sort of annoyances rather than\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You were numb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I was numb to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, how did you sit down with three kids and say, \u201cDad\u2019s leaving\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t. You know, I think that God protected our children during this time. We got with the counselor; and the counselor said: \u201cI think that you don\u2019t need to talk with your children about this at all right now. I think that you need to work on this and continue to work on this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf there\u2019s ever a chance of having any hope, then leave them out of this at the time being.\u201d So, that\u2019s what we did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll stop you there\u2014\u201cEver a chance of any hope.\u201d So there had to be a glimmer of hope there\u2014that you were protecting your kids in the midst of this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I think that God used that. I don\u2019t know how, because I was in a very dark place. I don\u2019t know how that happened, but it did; and I\u2019m <em>extremely<\/em> thankful for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>They were\u2014just for anyone listening with children\u2014they were three, five, and seven. I realize that, when children are significantly older than that, you can\u2019t just hide that from them. But at three, five, and almost seven, I got really creative with the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Tiffany told them that I was working on a project.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>They were used to the term, \u201cproject,\u201d because of my career and his career\u2014being self-employed and creating things\u2014they were familiar. I was like: \u201cDaddy has a really important project out at Pop\u2019s and Nana\u2019s. It\u2019s just better for him to be there right now, because this project is so big.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe project was the project of his heart, and I was holding onto hope [Emotion in voice].\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So did you tell your dad? You had to tell your dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Yes; I told him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Oh, yes; he sat down and told his whole family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>I told my whole family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And?\u2014what did they say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Well, they were all very upset. They sat around and prayed for me, which I didn\u2019t really want. You know, they really wanted us to work through our issues. They didn\u2019t want us to just jump back in to things\u2014they wanted us to work on issues. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know, I sat down with my mom and dad, and brother and sister, and other sister, and husbands and wives, and told them all what was going on and that we were separating. You know, it was a rough time \/ it was a really rough time. You know, my parents\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>They were Team Jeremy and Tiffany. That is <em>so<\/em> important if your family member is going through something like this. They didn\u2019t take a side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>They were never for me, ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They were on the side of the two of you together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>\u2014of <em>us<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>The two of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Yes. No one in my family was: \u201cWell, Jeremy, I\u2019ve seen this. You know, you had every right.\u201d That was difficult, because I think most people would expect their family to be for them and only for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Unpack that a bit. How was that difficult for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeremy: <\/strong>Well, because it made me feel like, \u201cIf they\u2019re Team Jeremy and Tiffany, and there is no more Jeremy and Tiffany, what does that look like?\u201d You know, \u201cThis is my family; and they\u2019re telling me, \u2018All we\u2019re for is Jeremy and Tiffany.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They recognized that you two were one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes; for sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they were still going to treat you as both\u2014you know, I think that\u2019s brilliant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Well, my mother-in-law\u2014I remember her saying: \u201cIf this goes down, and he continues to live in darkness, you and the children will come at Christmas. He can come by some other time.\u201d So she wasn\u2019t taking my side, but she stood for truth\u2014she said, \u201cYou\u2019re my daughter-in-law forever,\u201d and I will ever be grateful for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, this is a horrific \/ a grieving moment. I just can\u2019t even describe the emotions that are here in the studio when I\u2019m hearing you two share about; but the power of your family\u2019s belief in you two, as a couple. I don\u2019t think you realize that may, not only have just rescued your marriage, but may be used by others, who are listening, to this\u2014because divorce is rampant in our nation. Their families wonder: \u201cWhat do you do? How do you relate?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019ve drawn here is a very practical way of standing for marriage in a loving way\u2014not throwing stones at the person who\u2019s leaving\u2014but still loving them \/ but letting them know: \u201cIt\u2019s Team Jeremy and Tiffany. We\u2019re for this union; because there used to be two individuals \/ now, there are two individuals who\u2019ve become one.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I just have to ask\u2014you said, Tiffany, that you got creative with the truth with the kids; but on December 27, when you went to bed that night, you couldn\u2019t get creative with the truth with yourself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>No. We just didn\u2019t discuss it. In fact, it was like a funeral, almost, that night; because our closest net group of friends all came to the house. They were all gathered around my bed\u2014I don\u2019t know why we were in my room, but we happened to be in there. I was just sitting on the bed, crying; and they were gathered around me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we talked about was forgiveness, and all we talked about was hope, and that God\u2019s bigger than this. There was a lot of truth coming at me, saying: \u201cOkay; Jeremy\u2019s doing this, this, and this; and that\u2019s wrong. He\u2019s doing it in response to some things that are not all your fault, but some of them are things that you pushed him to. So what can you own?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust this community came together and said: \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been afraid to tell you that you\u2019re really selfish. We\u2019ve been afraid to tell you that you talk too much. We\u2019ve been afraid to tell you that you seem completely unavailable and too busy all the time.\u201d Those were painful to hear, because I\u2019m already kind of digesting that my husband has left; but I will never, ever be able to say how much love I felt from friends\u2014[Emotion in voice]\u2014friends who love you enough to say what\u2019s hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy best friend in the whole world\u2014Meliss was like: \u201cWe\u2019re going to talk about you. What can you own? Because whether you divorce or not, you\u2019re going to take this into the future\u2014or your next marriage, or your next marriage. You\u2019re going to take all of that if you don\u2019t deal with some of it now.\u201d She kind of helped me work on me\u2014which was the only thing I could control \/ which is the only thing any of us can control\u2014is us. To have a community in my life that would do that has so much to do with why we can tell you this story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>\u2014which goes back to why it\u2019s important to have community in the first place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said it felt like a funeral, and it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>It was. It was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because a marriage had died.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>It had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But as you tell in the book, <em>Need You Now<\/em>, the death was not the end.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what I want our listeners to hear in this is that neither Jeremy\u2019s family nor their friends, who surrounded you, Tiffany, took sides.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the message of this for the Christian community is: \u201cLove somebody enough to tell them the truth. Don\u2019t bad-mouth the person who\u2019s leaving. Love them too. This is where the Christian message\u2014it\u2019s a message of Easter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cLife comes out of death.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tiffany: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Do we believe that or not?! Yes! The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you\u2014the Holy Spirit\u2014and He can do something new in a broken, dead marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we have seen that happen so many times at our <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>marriage getaways, where couples come with a loss of hope and with no idea how to repair the damage that\u2019s been done. God meets them there and provides both help and hope through His Word and through the work of the Spirit in their lives.
