One of the things I <em>love<\/em> about the guy we\u2019re going to get a chance to hear from today is that he always helps me rethink about marriage with kind of a loftier, more noble view and purpose. I think we get really utilitarian in how we view marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we get selfish about marriage: \u201cWhat have you done for me recently?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what Gary does is\u2014he lifts us out of the ruts we\u2019re in, and he challenges us. I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014what he\u2019s going to talk about today, I totally agree with. He basically says that marriage is a great way to learn how to love another person. It is like school\u2014you go to school with God as your tutor and the Scriptures instructing you, learning what real love is all about. We start with puppy love; we end with real love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you would think that guys, like you and me\u2014who spend a lot of time talking about and talking to people about marriage\u2014you would think that we\u2019d kind of have it wired and figured out, but the reality is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t, Bob?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know I don\u2019t, and I know you don\u2019t. [Laughter]\u00a0 The reality is\u2014we all have to keep tuning up what it is we are doing in marriage. He\u2019s already outlined pillar number one in this message, which is understanding that: We Are Created for More than Just Each Other. Here\u2019s Gary Thomas with Part Two of the message. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gary:<\/strong> Our greatest need is not to be loved. Here it is\u2014and this is the second pillar\u2014our greatest need is: To Learn How to Love. That radically transformed my marriage. It took me months, even after God had put the word of \u201cparent\u201d to me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to wrestle with it, to accept it, and to believe it in my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason it changed my marriage so much is this\u2014when I thought my greatest need was to be loved\u2014and I wasn\u2019t noticed, appreciated, or served like I thought I should be\u2014bitterness, frustration, resentment, even anger. When I believed my greatest need was really to learn how to love\u2014when I became convinced in my soul: \u201cThat\u2019s what I want to grow to. I want to learn how to love a little bit better today.\u201d There isn\u2019t a day of marriage, there isn\u2019t a day of parenting, and there isn\u2019t a day at the office, where you don\u2019t have a great opportunity to learn how to love. When you are surrounded by people who stumble in many ways, you get to learn how to love in many different, trying situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I don\u2019t expect you to just accept my opinion for this. I want to try to make the biblical case. Let\u2019s look at Colossians, Chapter 3, verse 14, when Paul says this: \u201cAbove all\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014after everything that I\u2019ve told you \/ over that and more importantly than all of that, here\u2019s what you need to do\u2014\u201cclothe yourselves with love which binds everything together in perfect harmony.\u201d\u00a0 And we flip over a couple of books, and we go to Peter\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1 Peter 4:8. What are his first two words?\u2014\u201cAbove all\u2026\u201d \u201cAbove all,\u201d he says, \u201cmaintain constant love for one another for love covers a multitude of sins.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you know the New Testament at all, these are <em>two<\/em> different writers \/ <em>two<\/em> very different men. Where did they get that?\u00a0 Why\u2014with such different outlooks and personalities\u2014would they be saying virtually the same thing?\u00a0 The answer is simple\u2014they serve the same God, they listen to the same Messiah, they have the same Teacher. Jesus changed everything\u2014He redefined faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn John, Chapter 13, the last supper\u2014when He\u2019s really preparing His disciples when He said these words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014now, I don\u2019t know if a more inspiring paragraph has been uttered or said\u2014but here is what Jesus said in John 13:34-35: \u201cA new commandment I give to you that you love one another even as I have loved you that you also love one another. By this, all men will know that you are My disciples if\u201d\u2014<em>if<\/em>\u2014\u201cyou have love one for another.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus is saying His master plan of discipleship and evangelism is to create a community of people that so excel at love\u2014they\u2019re so astonishing in their love \/ they love so <em>extravagantly<\/em>\u2014people will look at the way they treat each other and they\u2019ll say, \u201cThey must \/ he must be one of His.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we apply this to marriage, here is the standard that Jesus is setting\u2014this is what a Christian marriage should be if we accept what Jesus is saying\u2014here is what it is: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOnly those Christian men treat their wives like that. Only those Christian men talk about their wives like that,\u201d\u2014and her\u2014\u201cI bet you she\u2019s a believer. Whenever I see a woman talk about her husband, or look at her husband like that, or treat him like that, I know she\u2019s one of those Christians; because they\u2019re the only ones that do that.\u201d That\u2019s the <em>standard<\/em>\u2014Jesus said that is His plan to reach the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, how many of us think that\u2019s how the world at large looks at us believers?\u00a0 How many of us think that that\u2019s the way the world would <em>define<\/em> Christian marriages?\u00a0 Here\u2019s the convicting part\u2014why <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> the world look at us that way?\u00a0 Maybe, it\u2019s because we haven\u2019t accepted Jesus\u2019 commandment as a commandment \/ maybe, we think it\u2019s a suggestion: \u201cWell, He forgives us. So, it\u2019s not really important that I grow in my ability to love; because He\u2019s got me covered. What does it really matter if I testify or witness to others?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause we don\u2019t think it\u2019s our greatest need to learn how to love, we don\u2019t grow in love; and we\u2019re not doing what Jesus said we\u2019re supposed to be doing, which is to win others by the <em>impact<\/em> of our love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd here\u2019s where I think Satan has been so cleverly successful in removing the motivation of the church\u2014because here is what I think Satan does\u2014he says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLook; this [love]\u2014I can\u2019t fight that!\u00a0 If people love like that, I\u2019ve got <em>nothing<\/em> in my arsenal to compete\u2014lust can\u2019t compete with that, hatred can\u2019t compete with that, materialism \/ it can\u2019t compete with that. That hits the soul. I can\u2019t let people grow there \/ I can\u2019t let people go there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo, what am I going to do?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell everybody, \u2018Look; don\u2019t listen to that commandment. Here\u2019s the greatest commandment: \u201cFind somebody to love you\u2014find your soul mate.\u201d\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll never be complete or fulfilled if you search for a romantic partner, where the feelings never die. That\u2019s what you\u2019ll spend your whole life searching for and being disappointed in. So, you lose this person and try to start over. Then, that goes bad. Then, you start over and over. You spend your entire life trying to be loved because you think that\u2019s your greatest need, and you never get freed to go on this spiritual journey of believing that your greatest need is to learn <em>how<\/em> to love\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s what marriage teaches us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen the Bible talks about marriage\u2014Paul to husbands \/ Ephesians 5:25\u2014you\u2019ve all heard this: \u201cHusbands love your wives as Christ loved the church.\u201d\u00a0 Paul talking to women\u2014Titus 2:4\u2014older women should \u201c\u2026train the younger women to love their husbands\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Same women\u2014you should take the call to love your husbands so seriously, you should all be kind of setting up schools in churches that practically teach women, \u201cThis is how you love a man.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, tell me one passage\u2014just one\u2014where the Bible says, \u201cOur greatest need is to be loved by another person romantically,\u201d\u2014doesn\u2019t exist. Now, the reason this is so important is that: \u201cWhat I think my greatest need is impacts what I\u2019m willing to put up with.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, if we think our greatest need is to be loved, we\u2019re like those people who drive to the gym, and then they go in, and they\u2019re cursing out the machines the whole time: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cOh, I hate these presses! It\u2019s such an evil machine!\u00a0 Oh, these curls\u2014I\u2019m going to <em>sue<\/em> this club!\u00a0 It hurts. This treadmill makes me sweat, and I get tired.\u201d\u00a0 Nobody does that. Why?\u00a0 They pay $100 a month to go to a club to make themselves sweat, to make themselves hurt, to make themselves sore. Why?\u2014because they have a vision: \u201cI can be stronger. I can be faster. I can be fitter. I can be healthier. That\u2019s what I <em>need<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat if we woke up with the Bible\u2019s agenda? It\u2019s going to <em>hurt<\/em> to die to pride. It\u2019s going to <em>hurt<\/em> to become kinder, if we\u2019re not naturally kind. It\u2019s going to tire us out to be gentle again and again \/ to forgive again and again; but we will do it if we think our greatest need is to learn how to love because we\u2019ll say:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI can be gentler,\u201d \u201cI can be kinder,\u201d \u201cI can be humbler,\u201d \u201cI can be more like Christ, and that\u2019s what I want to be.\u201d\u00a0 So, we won\u2019t run from our marriages. We\u2019ll keep going back to our marriages, just like everybody does to their athletic clubs\u2014at least, until February, when they give up their things\u2014but we\u2019re not going to be that way; are we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay; the third pillar is that we need to learn to Embrace Marriage as Worship. This has been a <em>huge<\/em> journey for me. God knows how to speak to us\u2014and I have <em>loved<\/em> being a dad \/ my wife has just <em>loved<\/em> being a mom\u2014it\u2019s miraculous. It was through this love for my children that God spoke so strongly to me about my marriage, because I was not being the best of husbands. God was chastising me\u2014He said: \u201cGary, Lisa isn\u2019t just your wife. She\u2019s my daughter, and I expect you to treat her accordingly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I got kids, I got it; because, if you want to get on my good side, it\u2019s easy: \u201cJust be kind to one of my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBe\u2014make them smile. Give them a good gift. Make them feel good about themselves,\u201d\u2014I will love you for the rest of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you want to get on my bad side, it\u2019s just as easy: \u201cBe mean to one of my kids. Shame one of my kids. Hurt one of my kids.\u201d\u00a0 My blood pressure will go up if I even hear your name, because I\u2019d much rather you mess with <em>me<\/em> than one of my kids. Every parent here knows <em>exactly<\/em> what I\u2019m talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile I spent a large part of my life meditating on God as my heavenly Father\u2014which I believe is a <em>foundational<\/em> key Christian doctrine\u2014if you want to transform your marriage, meditate on God as Father-in-law because He is. The day you get married, God becomes your heavenly Father-in-law. When I realized that God feels about my wife \/ His daughter just as I feel about my girls\u2014but with a more pure and intense passion\u2014everything about my marriage changed, because now it\u2019s not just: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do I have patience for somebody who stumbles in many ways?\u201d but \u201cHow do I reverence a God, who has been so <em>stupendously<\/em> gracious \/ beyond kind to me?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about what God has given us\u2014to begin with, He created us \/ He gave us life!\u00a0 Then, He chose to make us humans, who could know beauty, and truth, and love; because we\u2019re created in the image of God. Then, He let me be a husband, and I get to marry one of His daughters; and I get to be a dad. Then, He gives me His Holy Spirit. So, it\u2019s not just legalism\u2014it\u2019s not just trying to memorize a book or do the right things\u2014He empowers me to become the kind of person I\u2019ve always wanted to become. He forgives me when I mess up, and He has this amazing way of affirming me while correcting me. That\u2019s what it means to live in Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Then, when He says, \u201cHere\u2019s my daughter\u2014she\u2019s so important to me,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I realized the best way I can worship my heavenly Father is to treat Him as my heavenly Father-in-law\u2014say, \u201cI\u2019m going to love her as well as I can.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how you build a lifelong love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to end with a story of a woman who started to understand these truths. Linda Dillow tells about her in her book, <em>What\u2019s It Like to Be Married to Me?<\/em>\u00a0 Krista\u2019s husband Caleb served as a brigade surgeon in Iraq. After being there for six months, Caleb sent Krista an email, saying, \u201cHey, I\u2019ve got a two-week leave coming up.\u201d\u00a0 Krista got it and said: \u201cYes!\u00a0 I\u2019ve been a single mom for six months. Caleb\u2019s coming home. I\u2019m going to get to have lunch with Becca. I\u2019m going to get my nails done. I\u2019m going to get my hair done.\u201d But then, she stopped\u2014and she didn\u2019t use my language, but it\u2019s the same concept: \u201cWhat if my greatest need isn\u2019t to be loved?\u00a0 What if my greatest need is to learn how to love?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe found herself praying this prayer: \u201cLord, how can I fill up my husband\u2019s spirit, soul, and body so that he can go back to war for six more months?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe waited \/ God spoke\u2014practical ideas filled her mind. One of them was\u2014she wrote to him and said: \u201cCaleb, I know you haven\u2019t been eating the best\u2014you\u2019ve been away in Iraq. What are you looking forward to?\u201d\u00a0 He sent her several suggestions. She went to the grocery store and bought everything on the list. Then, she went to an entirely different store; and in her words, she \u201cbought seven bedroom outfits in seven different colors.\u201d\u00a0 She went to a bookstore\u2014she bought a book on massage. In her words, she said she studied it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she arranged 24 hours of childcare, saying to herself: \u201cMy husband has been a solider away in Iraq. He\u2019s going to want to come home and enjoy his wife.\u201d\u00a0 So, she bought fresh civilian clothes to greet Caleb when he came back. They went out to dinner with the kids to get reacquainted; but then, she had something very special for the kids\u2014so they went off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe brought Caleb back home. She said she knew his love language was physical touch; so she drew him a bath. I\u2019ll let her pick up the story: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI straddled the tub with my big sponge and began to cleanse the smells of war.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I washed the odor of war away, I prayed to cleanse his soul from the spirit of death and destruction. As I washed his head and hair, I prayed, \u201cLord, let nothing he has fought harm him.\u201d\u00a0 As I wiped his eyes, I prayed, \u201cLord, let nothing he has seen stay in his heart.\u201d\u00a0 As I washed his ears, I prayed, \u201cLord, let nothing he has heard touch his spirit.\u201d\u00a0 I washed and prayed over every part of my husband, begging God that nothing would take root \/ that all evil would be washed away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is such a powerful prayer\u2014that, here, her husband had been serving her family by serving his country \/ protecting all of us. She\u2019s saying, \u201cLord, cleanse him, renew him, rebuild him, and refresh him.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s such a spiritual moment as she cries out to God to anoint her husband\u2014such a spiritual moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater that week, she put the massage techniques into practice\u2014middle of the afternoon. Caleb fell asleep for two hours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wakes up. He\u2019s groggy in the best of ways\u2014shuffles into the kitchen: \u201cHoney, that was <em>amazing<\/em>. I didn\u2019t sleep like that the entire time I was in Iraq.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, two weeks [snap of fingers], they were up like that. As Caleb went away, here\u2019s how Krista described their time together: \u201cOur two weeks were a supernatural feast of intimacy with the Lord and with one another. There was something sacred. There was something holy about this moment.\u201d\u00a0 She got there\u2014not by trying to manipulate him, or cajole him, or saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to meet this need or that need,\u201d\u2014she simply said: \u201cWhat if my greatest need isn\u2019t to be loved?\u2014what if it\u2019s about learning how to love?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome might warn her: \u201cLook; he could take advantage of you. He could roll all over you.\u201d\u00a0 While that\u2019s a possibility, that\u2019s not what happened here; because she lived with this question\u2014these are her words again: \u201cHave I loved him spirit, soul, and body so he was ready to return to war? Three days after he got back, he emailed me and said, \u2018Thank you for the best two weeks of my life.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where sacred marriage is found. That\u2019s how you build a lifelong love\u2014a couple, together, inviting God in by living according to His ways, by accepting that we were made for more than each other. He\u2019s our partner\u2014so, \u201cLord, what\u2019s our purpose today?\u00a0 Are we raising our kids to follow You or just to be successful?\u00a0 Are we repenting of the sins that make us so miserable?\u00a0 Do we believe, every day, I need to get better at love, I need to grow in love, I want to accept Jesus\u2019 commandment?\u201d and \u201cAre we worshiping our heavenly Father, remembering that we\u2019re not married to a forgotten orphan; we\u2019re married to a cherished son or daughter of God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, marriage isn\u2019t just natural. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. One of the things I <em>love<\/em> about the guy we\u2019re going to get a chance to hear from today is that he always helps me rethink about marriage with kind of a loftier, more noble view and purpose. I think we get really utilitarian in how we view marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think we get selfish about marriage: \u201cWhat have you done for me recently?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And what Gary does is\u2014he lifts us out of the ruts we\u2019re in, and he challenges us. I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014what he\u2019s going to talk about today, I totally agree with. He basically says that marriage is a great way to learn how to love another person. It is like school\u2014you go to school with God as your tutor and the Scriptures instructing you, learning what real love is all about. We start with puppy love; we end with real love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you would think that guys, like you and me\u2014who spend a lot of time talking about and talking to people about marriage\u2014you would think that we\u2019d kind of have it wired and figured out, but the reality is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You don\u2019t, Bob?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know I don\u2019t, and I know you don\u2019t. [Laughter]\u00a0 The reality is\u2014we all have to keep tuning up what it is we are doing in marriage. He\u2019s already outlined pillar number one in this message, which is understanding that: We Are Created for More than Just Each Other. Here\u2019s Gary Thomas with Part Two of the message. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Gary:<\/strong> Our greatest need is not to be loved. Here it is\u2014and this is the second pillar\u2014our greatest need is: To Learn How to Love. That radically transformed my marriage. It took me months, even after God had put the word of \u201cparent\u201d to me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to wrestle with it, to accept it, and to believe it in my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason it changed my marriage so much is this\u2014when I thought my greatest need was to be loved\u2014and I wasn\u2019t noticed, appreciated, or served like I thought I should be\u2014bitterness, frustration, resentment, even anger. When I believed my greatest need was really to learn how to love\u2014when I became convinced in my soul: \u201cThat\u2019s what I want to grow to. I want to learn how to love a little bit better today.\u201d There isn\u2019t a day of marriage, there isn\u2019t a day of parenting, and there isn\u2019t a day at the office, where you don\u2019t have a great opportunity to learn how to love. When you are surrounded by people who stumble in many ways, you get to learn how to love in many different, trying situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I don\u2019t expect you to just accept my opinion for this. I want to try to make the biblical case. Let\u2019s look at Colossians, Chapter 3, verse 14, when Paul says this: \u201cAbove all\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014after everything that I\u2019ve told you \/ over that and more importantly than all of that, here\u2019s what you need to do\u2014\u201cclothe yourselves with love which binds everything together in perfect harmony.\u201d\u00a0 And we flip over a couple of books, and we go to Peter\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1 Peter 4:8. What are his first two words?\u2014\u201cAbove all\u2026\u201d \u201cAbove all,\u201d he says, \u201cmaintain constant love for one another for love covers a multitude of sins.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you know the New Testament at all, these are <em>two<\/em> different writers \/ <em>two<\/em> very different men. Where did they get that?\u00a0 Why\u2014with such different outlooks and personalities\u2014would they be saying virtually the same thing?\u00a0 The answer is simple\u2014they serve the same God, they listen to the same Messiah, they have the same Teacher. Jesus changed everything\u2014He redefined faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn John, Chapter 13, the last supper\u2014when He\u2019s really preparing His disciples when He said these words\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014now, I don\u2019t know if a more inspiring paragraph has been uttered or said\u2014but here is what Jesus said in John 13:34-35: \u201cA new commandment I give to you that you love one another even as I have loved you that you also love one another. By this, all men will know that you are My disciples if\u201d\u2014<em>if<\/em>\u2014\u201cyou have love one for another.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus is saying His master plan of discipleship and evangelism is to create a community of people that so excel at love\u2014they\u2019re so astonishing in their love \/ they love so <em>extravagantly<\/em>\u2014people will look at the way they treat each other and they\u2019ll say, \u201cThey must \/ he must be one of His.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we apply this to marriage, here is the standard that Jesus is setting\u2014this is what a Christian marriage should be if we accept what Jesus is saying\u2014here is what it is: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOnly those Christian men treat their wives like that. Only those Christian men talk about their wives like that,\u201d\u2014and her\u2014\u201cI bet you she\u2019s a believer. Whenever I see a woman talk about her husband, or look at her husband like that, or treat him like that, I know she\u2019s one of those Christians; because they\u2019re the only ones that do that.\u201d That\u2019s the <em>standard<\/em>\u2014Jesus said that is His plan to reach the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, how many of us think that\u2019s how the world at large looks at us believers?\u00a0 How many of us think that that\u2019s the way the world would <em>define<\/em> Christian marriages?\u00a0 Here\u2019s the convicting part\u2014why <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> the world look at us that way?\u00a0 Maybe, it\u2019s because we haven\u2019t accepted Jesus\u2019 commandment as a commandment \/ maybe, we think it\u2019s a suggestion: \u201cWell, He forgives us. So, it\u2019s not really important that I grow in my ability to love; because He\u2019s got me covered. What does it really matter if I testify or witness to others?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause we don\u2019t think it\u2019s our greatest need to learn how to love, we don\u2019t grow in love; and we\u2019re not doing what Jesus said we\u2019re supposed to be doing, which is to win others by the <em>impact<\/em> of our love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd here\u2019s where I think Satan has been so cleverly successful in removing the motivation of the church\u2014because here is what I think Satan does\u2014he says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLook; this [love]\u2014I can\u2019t fight that!\u00a0 If people love like that, I\u2019ve got <em>nothing<\/em> in my arsenal to compete\u2014lust can\u2019t compete with that, hatred can\u2019t compete with that, materialism \/ it can\u2019t compete with that. That hits the soul. I can\u2019t let people grow there \/ I can\u2019t let people go there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo, what am I going to do?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell everybody, \u2018Look; don\u2019t listen to that commandment. Here\u2019s the greatest commandment: \u201cFind somebody to love you\u2014find your soul mate.\u201d\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ll never be complete or fulfilled if you search for a romantic partner, where the feelings never die. That\u2019s what you\u2019ll spend your whole life searching for and being disappointed in. So, you lose this person and try to start over. Then, that goes bad. Then, you start over and over. You spend your entire life trying to be loved because you think that\u2019s your greatest need, and you never get freed to go on this spiritual journey of believing that your greatest need is to learn <em>how<\/em> to love\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that\u2019s what marriage teaches us to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen the Bible talks about marriage\u2014Paul to husbands \/ Ephesians 5:25\u2014you\u2019ve all heard this: \u201cHusbands love your wives as Christ loved the church.\u201d\u00a0 Paul talking to women\u2014Titus 2:4\u2014older women should \u201c\u2026train the younger women to love their husbands\u2026\u201d\u00a0 Same women\u2014you should take the call to love your husbands so seriously, you should all be kind of setting up schools in churches that practically teach women, \u201cThis is how you love a man.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, tell me one passage\u2014just one\u2014where the Bible says, \u201cOur greatest need is to be loved by another person romantically,\u201d\u2014doesn\u2019t exist. Now, the reason this is so important is that: \u201cWhat I think my greatest need is impacts what I\u2019m willing to put up with.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, if we think our greatest need is to be loved, we\u2019re like those people who drive to the gym, and then they go in, and they\u2019re cursing out the machines the whole time: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cOh, I hate these presses! It\u2019s such an evil machine!\u00a0 Oh, these curls\u2014I\u2019m going to <em>sue<\/em> this club!\u00a0 It hurts. This treadmill makes me sweat, and I get tired.\u201d\u00a0 Nobody does that. Why?\u00a0 They pay $100 a month to go to a club to make themselves sweat, to make themselves hurt, to make themselves sore. Why?\u2014because they have a vision: \u201cI can be stronger. I can be faster. I can be fitter. I can be healthier. That\u2019s what I <em>need<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat if we woke up with the Bible\u2019s agenda? It\u2019s going to <em>hurt<\/em> to die to pride. It\u2019s going to <em>hurt<\/em> to become kinder, if we\u2019re not naturally kind. It\u2019s going to tire us out to be gentle again and again \/ to forgive again and again; but we will do it if we think our greatest need is to learn how to love because we\u2019ll say:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI can be gentler,\u201d \u201cI can be kinder,\u201d \u201cI can be humbler,\u201d \u201cI can be more like Christ, and that\u2019s what I want to be.\u201d\u00a0 So, we won\u2019t run from our marriages. We\u2019ll keep going back to our marriages, just like everybody does to their athletic clubs\u2014at least, until February, when they give up their things\u2014but we\u2019re not going to be that way; are we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay; the third pillar is that we need to learn to Embrace Marriage as Worship. This has been a <em>huge<\/em> journey for me. God knows how to speak to us\u2014and I have <em>loved<\/em> being a dad \/ my wife has just <em>loved<\/em> being a mom\u2014it\u2019s miraculous. It was through this love for my children that God spoke so strongly to me about my marriage, because I was not being the best of husbands. God was chastising me\u2014He said: \u201cGary, Lisa isn\u2019t just your wife. She\u2019s my daughter, and I expect you to treat her accordingly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I got kids, I got it; because, if you want to get on my good side, it\u2019s easy: \u201cJust be kind to one of my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBe\u2014make them smile. Give them a good gift. Make them feel good about themselves,\u201d\u2014I will love you for the rest of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you want to get on my bad side, it\u2019s just as easy: \u201cBe mean to one of my kids. Shame one of my kids. Hurt one of my kids.\u201d\u00a0 My blood pressure will go up if I even hear your name, because I\u2019d much rather you mess with <em>me<\/em> than one of my kids. Every parent here knows <em>exactly<\/em> what I\u2019m talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile I spent a large part of my life meditating on God as my heavenly Father\u2014which I believe is a <em>foundational<\/em> key Christian doctrine\u2014if you want to transform your marriage, meditate on God as Father-in-law because He is. The day you get married, God becomes your heavenly Father-in-law. When I realized that God feels about my wife \/ His daughter just as I feel about my girls\u2014but with a more pure and intense passion\u2014everything about my marriage changed, because now it\u2019s not just: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do I have patience for somebody who stumbles in many ways?\u201d but \u201cHow do I reverence a God, who has been so <em>stupendously<\/em> gracious \/ beyond kind to me?\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about what God has given us\u2014to begin with, He created us \/ He gave us life!\u00a0 Then, He chose to make us humans, who could know beauty, and truth, and love; because we\u2019re created in the image of God. Then, He let me be a husband, and I get to marry one of His daughters; and I get to be a dad. Then, He gives me His Holy Spirit. So, it\u2019s not just legalism\u2014it\u2019s not just trying to memorize a book or do the right things\u2014He empowers me to become the kind of person I\u2019ve always wanted to become. He forgives me when I mess up, and He has this amazing way of affirming me while correcting me. That\u2019s what it means to live in Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Then, when He says, \u201cHere\u2019s my daughter\u2014she\u2019s so important to me,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I realized the best way I can worship my heavenly Father is to treat Him as my heavenly Father-in-law\u2014say, \u201cI\u2019m going to love her as well as I can.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how you build a lifelong love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to end with a story of a woman who started to understand these truths. Linda Dillow tells about her in her book, <em>What\u2019s It Like to Be Married to Me?<\/em>\u00a0 Krista\u2019s husband Caleb served as a brigade surgeon in Iraq. After being there for six months, Caleb sent Krista an email, saying, \u201cHey, I\u2019ve got a two-week leave coming up.\u201d\u00a0 Krista got it and said: \u201cYes!\u00a0 I\u2019ve been a single mom for six months. Caleb\u2019s coming home. I\u2019m going to get to have lunch with Becca. I\u2019m going to get my nails done. I\u2019m going to get my hair done.\u201d But then, she stopped\u2014and she didn\u2019t use my language, but it\u2019s the same concept: \u201cWhat if my greatest need isn\u2019t to be loved?\u00a0 What if my greatest need is to learn how to love?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe found herself praying this prayer: \u201cLord, how can I fill up my husband\u2019s spirit, soul, and body so that he can go back to war for six more months?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe waited \/ God spoke\u2014practical ideas filled her mind. One of them was\u2014she wrote to him and said: \u201cCaleb, I know you haven\u2019t been eating the best\u2014you\u2019ve been away in Iraq. What are you looking forward to?\u201d\u00a0 He sent her several suggestions. She went to the grocery store and bought everything on the list. Then, she went to an entirely different store; and in her words, she \u201cbought seven bedroom outfits in seven different colors.\u201d\u00a0 She went to a bookstore\u2014she bought a book on massage. In her words, she said she studied it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she arranged 24 hours of childcare, saying to herself: \u201cMy husband has been a solider away in Iraq. He\u2019s going to want to come home and enjoy his wife.\u201d\u00a0 So, she bought fresh civilian clothes to greet Caleb when he came back. They went out to dinner with the kids to get reacquainted; but then, she had something very special for the kids\u2014so they went off. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe brought Caleb back home. She said she knew his love language was physical touch; so she drew him a bath. I\u2019ll let her pick up the story: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI straddled the tub with my big sponge and began to cleanse the smells of war.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I washed the odor of war away, I prayed to cleanse his soul from the spirit of death and destruction. As I washed his head and hair, I prayed, \u201cLord, let nothing he has fought harm him.\u201d\u00a0 As I wiped his eyes, I prayed, \u201cLord, let nothing he has seen stay in his heart.\u201d\u00a0 As I washed his ears, I prayed, \u201cLord, let nothing he has heard touch his spirit.\u201d\u00a0 I washed and prayed over every part of my husband, begging God that nothing would take root \/ that all evil would be washed away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is such a powerful prayer\u2014that, here, her husband had been serving her family by serving his country \/ protecting all of us. She\u2019s saying, \u201cLord, cleanse him, renew him, rebuild him, and refresh him.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s such a spiritual moment as she cries out to God to anoint her husband\u2014such a spiritual moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater that week, she put the massage techniques into practice\u2014middle of the afternoon. Caleb fell asleep for two hours. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wakes up. He\u2019s groggy in the best of ways\u2014shuffles into the kitchen: \u201cHoney, that was <em>amazing<\/em>. I didn\u2019t sleep like that the entire time I was in Iraq.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, two weeks [snap of fingers], they were up like that. As Caleb went away, here\u2019s how Krista described their time together: \u201cOur two weeks were a supernatural feast of intimacy with the Lord and with one another. There was something sacred. There was something holy about this moment.\u201d\u00a0 She got there\u2014not by trying to manipulate him, or cajole him, or saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to meet this need or that need,\u201d\u2014she simply said: \u201cWhat if my greatest need isn\u2019t to be loved?\u2014what if it\u2019s about learning how to love?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome might warn her: \u201cLook; he could take advantage of you. He could roll all over you.\u201d\u00a0 While that\u2019s a possibility, that\u2019s not what happened here; because she lived with this question\u2014these are her words again: \u201cHave I loved him spirit, soul, and body so he was ready to return to war? Three days after he got back, he emailed me and said, \u2018Thank you for the best two weeks of my life.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where sacred marriage is found. That\u2019s how you build a lifelong love\u2014a couple, together, inviting God in by living according to His ways, by accepting that we were made for more than each other. He\u2019s our partner\u2014so, \u201cLord, what\u2019s our purpose today?\u00a0 Are we raising our kids to follow You or just to be successful?\u00a0 Are we repenting of the sins that make us so miserable?\u00a0 Do we believe, every day, I need to get better at love, I need to grow in love, I want to accept Jesus\u2019 commandment?\u201d and \u201cAre we worshiping our heavenly Father, remembering that we\u2019re not married to a forgotten orphan; we\u2019re married to a cherished son or daughter of God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, marriage isn\u2019t just natural.
