The Bible says you\u2019re a stranger and an alien. Here\u2019s Barbara Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> For the most part, we\u2019ve forgotten that this isn\u2019t our home. It is a little bit of a paradox to live in this land, and yet to be mindful that this isn\u2019t our home. I don\u2019t think we think about that enough. I think our roots have gone down too deep into the soil of this land, and we\u2019ve forgotten that we really belong to another place, another time, and another King\u2014that\u2019s whom we serve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, August 24<sup>th<\/sup>. If this world is not our home \/ if we\u2019re just passing through, how does that affect how we ought to live? We\u2019re going to spend time thinking about that today with Barbara Rainey. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, what\u2019s your favorite candy bar? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really? This is how you want to start?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to start because we were talking about this before we came on the air. You asked Barbara\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She brought what looks\u2014it looks\u2014can we admit it? It looks like a candy bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It does look like a candy bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She brought what looks like a candy bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it\u2019s a protein bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a protein bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s\u2014you know, it is cardboard covered with some kind of nutrient. [Laughter] I don\u2019t know what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; no! It\u2019s a candy bar with protein added. [Laughter] That\u2019s what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s probably right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you asked her something I didn\u2019t know the answer to. You asked her: \u201cWhat was her favorite candy bar?\u201d I\u2019ve been married to her for coming up on 44 years, and I don\u2019t know what her favorite candy bar is. I think the reason is\u2014I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen her eat any. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I asked, \u201cIf I were going down to the vending machine to get a candy bar, which one would you want?\u201d You had to stop and think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because it\u2019s been a while.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s been a <em>long<\/em> time. In fact, I didn\u2019t have an answer; so you rattled off about five or six names. I went: \u201cOh, yes! I used to like Milky Way<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then Reese\u2019s<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> came up; and you were like: \u201cOh, yes! I like those.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; I could eat a Reese\u2019s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you still will indulge occasionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I still have a sweet tooth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, yours, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mine would be the 72 percent dark chocolate made by the Izard Chocolate Company in downtown Little Rock.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes! I want the pure bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay; yes. It\u2019s very good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My friend Nathaniel Izard makes them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t ask what you\u2019d like to have intravenously. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mary Ann brings them home. He also has a wonderful chocolate-covered caramel that\u2019s <em>very<\/em> good. I like the gourmet. If I\u2019m going\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That sounds really yummy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, see? All of a sudden here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; that sounds really <em>yummy<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, it does. I like Toblerone, which is made in [Switzerland].\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Those are very nice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s pretty good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s just do a little straw poll with our listeners and find out what their favorite candy bar is. Barbara talked about how she nearly starved to death on a Josh McDowell mission trip to Russia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You said that the food you were fed every day\u2014a little boxed lunch\u2014what was in it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, we were on the buses, day after day, going to visit orphanages and different places. It was a wonderful, wonderful trip; but the hotel that we stayed in always packed us a little sack lunch to take on the bus. The lunch consisted of a Subway-type sandwich, a <em>very<\/em> paper-thin slice of meat that you could read through, a very thin\u2014one very thin\u2014tomato, and a very thin piece of lettuce. There was virtually no nutrition in it. It was really thin! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But they gave you a candy bar!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They gave us a candy bar called the Lion Bar. It was a <em>very<\/em> good candy bar. We all ate our candy bar every day for lunch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, when you\u2019re starving to death, anything will taste good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s how we got full. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It does taste better.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure listeners wonder exactly what the theme of today\u2019s program is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s candy! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to admit\u2014when you told me you wanted to talk about diplomatic relations with Barbara in the middle of the presidential election cycle, I thought, \u201cThis should be interesting.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Diplomatic relations with Barbara. Now, there are a lot of ways to take that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s true; that\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t even think about that! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me\u2014you wanted to talk with Barbara about the issue of diplomatic relations. How\u2019s that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is more accurate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve been talking about\u2014just as a couple\u2014how Paul exhorts us, over in the book of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t2 Corinthians, Chapter 5\u2014he exhorts us to be ambassadors for Christ. Barbara got me off on this. It\u2019s really caused me to start thinking differently about my identity \/ who I am on a daily basis. It wasn\u2019t that I didn\u2019t think about this before, but she saw a video of a person in a foreign country that kind of prompted this with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I think our listeners are going to be encouraged by what we talk about here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was the video you saw?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I found a video, maybe five-minutes long \/ maybe, six-minutes long, about this individual who lived in an Eastern European country, described as a very atheistic country. This individual had a plaque on the outside of the entrance to their home\u2014the plaque said, \u201cEmbassy of the King of Heaven.\u201d The story goes about how this person lived in this Communist country and has lived through multiple regime changes. Yet, one constant has remained the same; that is that the country in which this person lives is <em>not<\/em> really his home. This person really belongs to the kingdom of heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So the home that this person lives in\u2014we\u2019ve been calling it \u201cthis person\u201d because we\u2019ve been asked not to talk about the name, or the identity, or even the gender of the person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct; correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Although, if our listeners want to go see the video, we\u2019ve got a link to it on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll call him a man. This man lives in a home that, from his perspective\u2014that is different soil than the country\u2014that when he walks out of his front door, he walks into a different place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014into a foreign country because he believes that his home belongs to the kingdom of heaven. He even says on the video: \u201cMy home represents the King that I serve; and so I want my home to reflect the King. I have things on my wall \/ the way I conduct myself all represents my King.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe video shows him going to the market\u2014buying things \/ bringing things back\u2014so that he can entertain guests. Some of them have called for an appointment to visit with him. He considers himself an ambassador\u2014these people have called and want to come and talk. There are others who see the sign on his front door \/ next to his front door and just knock. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says the Holy Spirit brings these people. People come and want to talk about troubles in their lives; or things that they\u2019re going through; or they want to know, \u201cWho is this King of heaven that you serve and that you belong to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you saw the video, and it just got you thinking differently about your own life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I saw the video; and it just was so powerful to watch this person and to hear this person, who is an elderly person, who has lived almost 80 years of life. I was just inspired by the story because I realized that\u2019s true for all of us, who are believers in Christ: \u201cI am an ambassador.\u201d All three of us are ambassadors. Our children are ambassadors. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat means the home that I live in \/ the home that we live in should be an embassy of the King. Therefore: \u201cHow can I\u201d--especially me, as a woman\u2014\u201cHow can I make my home\u2014which I\u2019m always conscious of and aware of \/ I\u2019m always trying to improve our home\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014how do I make our home represent the King \/ the King that I belong to?\u201d\u2014because my home is not really the property that we live on \/ my home is really in heaven. We\u2019re here temporarily, and God has us here about His plan and about His purposes. So: \u201cHow can I be more connected with what He wants me to do? And how can my home be more of a representative of Him, the King?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think this conversation, Bob, has never been more relevant for our country. I\u2019m hearing a ton of fear. There are all of these culture wars that are taking place in our country right now. I think followers of Christ have to go back and go: \u201cHow do I live in the midst of this?! How am I supposed to behave? Who am I?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Bob, we interviewed a pastor from Simi Valley, California, who wrote a book called <em>Messy Grace<\/em>. His name is Caleb Kaltenbach, and it\u2019s going to be aired later on in September. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe made a statement in the interview\u2014it really hit me. I\u2019ve been chewing on this all summer\u2014he said: \u201cChristians today have to realize we are no longer the home team. We are the <em>visiting<\/em> team.\u201d So, if we\u2019re the visiting team, then we need to figure out: \u201cHow do you behave on a visitor\u2019s court? And how do you relate to people around these messy issues and do so in a way that\u2019s winsome \/ that leaves the aroma of Christ? And\u2014this is very important for you, parents \/ listen up!\u2014how do you train your kids to do this at school?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand as they go to the university?\u2014and as they grow up to establish their own homes?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m telling you\u2014it is game time! And we\u2019re on the visitors\u2019 court. We better do this job well because I think, right now, the winds of the culture have really completely shifted. We\u2019re no longer flowing with the winds\u2014we\u2019re going against the winds \/ going against the tide\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we\u2019re on the visitors\u2019 court\u2014however you wish to say it. We need to know who we are; that is, ambassadors for Christ. We need to know why we\u2019re here. We are here to represent Him. We need to be on mission, and we need to be training our kids to be on mission as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why this conversation with Barbara is so important\u2014to be thinking of our home as an embassy in a foreign land.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara, you may know the old song: \u201cThis world is not my home. I\u2019m just a passin\u2019 through,\u201d that people used to sing in church. It\u2019s really a picture of where we are. We are\u2014I think it was Peter who said\u2014\u201cstrangers and aliens\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not our homeland; and yet, we are citizens of the United States\u2014we are bound by the laws \/ we need to be good citizens as we live in this country\u2014but there\u2019s a higher allegiance; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> There is a higher allegiance. I think, for the most part, we\u2019ve forgotten that this isn\u2019t our home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a little bit of a paradox to live in this land and yet to be mindful that this isn\u2019t our home. But it\u2019s a good reminder. I think that would be a great hymn for us to start singing in church again because I don\u2019t think we think about that enough. I think our roots have gone down too deep into the soil of this land; and we\u2019ve forgotten that we really belong to another place, another time, and another King\u2014and that\u2019s whom we serve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; and if our country is kind of unstable\u2014and there\u2019s a lot of fear in the country, and your roots are in that soil\u2014it is going to reveal where you truly think your homeland is. I think, <em>again<\/em>: \u201cAre you first and foremost an American, or are you first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ?\u2014a child of the King and, therefore, an ambassador of the King of kings and the Lord of lords.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let\u2019s not assume that everybody knows exactly what an embassy is. I mean, we\u2019ve heard that word. I\u2019ve been to Washington, DC, and been down Embassy Row\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Embassy Row; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which is a series of houses \/ nice houses\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014with different signs out front of those houses from different nations. Explain what an embassy is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> One of the things that you would find interesting\u2014anybody who visits an embassy \/ if you went down Embassy Row\u2014the houses are all slightly different \/ they\u2019re not the same. They have a sign outside that\u2019s different. Usually, there\u2019s a flag representing that country; but if you walk in the front door of that embassy, you\u2019re going to be greeted with sights, and sounds, and probably even <em>smells<\/em> from that home country. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you went into the American Embassy in Africa\u2014in some African nation\u2014or the American Embassy in Beijing, it would not look like China when you walked in the door \/ it would not look like Uganda when you walked in the door. When you walk in the door of the American Embassy, you see framed pictures of our national heroes\u2014George Washington and Abraham Lincoln would be on the wall. You would see the American flag. The embassies have kitchens. You would probably smell American food cooking. There would be air-conditioning \/ carpeting\u2014it would <em>feel<\/em> like being home in America. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe embassy is a piece of <em>that<\/em> country on foreign soil. For instance, the soil that the American Embassy sits on\u2014in whatever country we have an embassy\u2014that soil literally belongs to the United States.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The people on that soil are governed by US law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If they commit a crime, it\u2019s adjudicated in US courts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s just like they\u2019re in a part of America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It just happens to be a square\u2014half mile or whatever it is\u2014in China.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. For instance, if you\u2019re in another country\u2014we were traveling, say, in China\u2014and we had some kind of problem \/ some kind of trouble\u2014we, because we\u2019re American citizens, would go to the American Embassy for help. The staff of the American Embassy is there to help American citizens, who are traveling, or working, or serving in that country. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re also there to engage with local citizens, too, because there are people who come to the American Embassy to get a visa to travel to the United States. They serve lots of different purposes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, one thing that you all mentioned\u2014as you\u2019re going down Embassy Row, you see these flags. As you get closer to the embassy, there are these plaques \/ the signage on the front door or near the front door of the embassy that identifies the building as being an American embassy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve actually created a plaque that could be screwed into the wall in the front of the home, much like this person we talked about has in front of their home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; yes. Well, after watching this video, and seeing that this person had a plaque on the outside of their home, I thought: \u201cI want a plaque on the outside of my house. I want the UPS guy, or the neighbor who comes over, or someone who just drives by to see that: \u201cIn this house, we belong to the King of heaven. We belong to another country.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided I wanted one of those plaques. I didn\u2019t know where to get one; so we had one made. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s got a crown\u2014it\u2019s got a crown.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. It says, \u201cEmbassy of the King\u201d and it has a crown on it because we belong to the King. It is metal, and it can be permanently installed on the exterior of your house if you want to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Has this been permanently installed on the exterior of your house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Not yet, because I haven\u2019t had it long enough. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I can promise you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But it will be!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014as the handyman of the house, it will!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can imagine coming home\u2014that as I come home \/ you come home from work\u2014as we go in our front door, we might just reach out and touch that. You know, when you see something that\u2019s metal like this, if it\u2019s in a museum, people touch it. You can see it\u2019s kind of worn down a bit after hundreds\/ thousands of people have touched it. This is not brass; this is stainless steel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think just to touch it\u2014much like a player going out of the locker room\u2014I think it would be good for us just to maybe remind our children and us, as we leave home \/ as we come back home: \u201cThis is an embassy of the King, and <em>I<\/em> am an ambassador.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And not only that\u2014I just imagine what that would be like because, when we all leave home, as you were talking earlier, we\u2019re going into enemy territory. I think we forget\u2014when we go out on a day-to-day basis\u2014that we\u2019re on the business of the King. I think we are so prone to get caught up in my \u201cto do\u201d list, or the things I\u2019ve got to check off, or all the errands I have to run, or whatever it might be that we forget that we have been called to live for the King. So, when we leave our front door every day, or get in our car to go to school, or get on the bus, or whatever, I think it\u2019s very easy to forget that \u201cI\u2019ve been called today to live for the King and for His business and not my own.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You mentioned that you had this stainless steel plaque made for your home. We should mention you had a few extra made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; a few extra. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014so we could offer these to listeners who might want one. In addition to the plaques, you\u2019ve had banners and signage that you\u2019ve printed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, we made two other versions. We made the one that can be permanently mounted on the outside of your home; but for people\u2014who live in apartments, or you may be in a rental house, or you don\u2019t know if you\u2019re going to be where you are for very long\u2014you might want something that would be easier to take with you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not; it\u2019s not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You saw the verse!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, I thought for sure you were going straight to Joshua 24:15!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, that\u2019s not it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob\u2019s in Song of Solomon\u2014we\u2019re never going to recover this broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDeuteronomy 6: \u201cHear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.\u201d Then verse 8: \u201cYou shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes; you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think God, in establishing the nation of Israel, was trying to remind them\u2014much like Tony Mitchell\u2019s [Christian Alliance for Orphans] dad: \u201cHere\u2019s who you are. Now, don\u2019t forget: \u2018I\u2019m your God. You\u2019re My people. You\u2019re to represent Me.\u2019\u201d We\u2019re going to have some stuff hanging on the front of the house to signify that we\u2019re not just another family. We are a family that knows Yahweh, the King of kings \/ the Lord of lords.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think\u2014again, just back to where we are today in our culture\u2014I just think, in the midst of a lot of fear \/ in the midst of a lot of controversy, believers need to know who they are and whose they are. They need to be representing Him with excellence, and they need to be training their children to do the same. It is a little bit of a paradox to live in this land, and yet to be mindful that this isn\u2019t our home. I don\u2019t think we think about that enough. I think our roots have gone down too deep into the soil of this land, and we\u2019ve forgotten that we really belong to another place, another time, and another King\u2014that\u2019s whom we serve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, August 24<sup>th<\/sup>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really? This is how you want to start?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to start because we were talking about this before we came on the air. You asked Barbara\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She brought what looks\u2014it looks\u2014can we admit it? It looks like a candy bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It does look like a candy bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She brought what looks like a candy bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it\u2019s a protein bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s a protein bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s\u2014you know, it is cardboard covered with some kind of nutrient. [Laughter] I don\u2019t know what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No; no! It\u2019s a candy bar with protein added. [Laughter] That\u2019s what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s probably right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly what it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you asked her something I didn\u2019t know the answer to. You asked her: \u201cWhat was her favorite candy bar?\u201d I\u2019ve been married to her for coming up on 44 years, and I don\u2019t know what her favorite candy bar is. I think the reason is\u2014I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen her eat any. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I asked, \u201cIf I were going down to the vending machine to get a candy bar, which one would you want?\u201d You had to stop and think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because it\u2019s been a while.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s been a <em>long<\/em> time. In fact, I didn\u2019t have an answer; so you rattled off about five or six names. I went: \u201cOh, yes! I used to like Milky Way<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And then Reese\u2019s<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> came up; and you were like: \u201cOh, yes! I like those.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; I could eat a Reese\u2019s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you still will indulge occasionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I still have a sweet tooth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, yours, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mine would be the 72 percent dark chocolate made by the Izard Chocolate Company in downtown Little Rock.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Oh, my goodness!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes! I want the pure bar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay; yes. It\u2019s very good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My friend Nathaniel Izard makes them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t ask what you\u2019d like to have intravenously. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mary Ann brings them home. He also has a wonderful chocolate-covered caramel that\u2019s <em>very<\/em> good. I like the gourmet. If I\u2019m going\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That sounds really yummy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, see? All of a sudden here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; that sounds really <em>yummy<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, it does. Barbara talked about how she nearly starved to death on a Josh McDowell mission trip to Russia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You said that the food you were fed every day\u2014a little boxed lunch\u2014what was in it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, we were on the buses, day after day, going to visit orphanages and different places. It was a wonderful, wonderful trip; but the hotel that we stayed in always packed us a little sack lunch to take on the bus. The lunch consisted of a Subway-type sandwich, a <em>very<\/em> paper-thin slice of meat that you could read through, a very thin\u2014one very thin\u2014tomato, and a very thin piece of lettuce. There was virtually no nutrition in it. It was really thin! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But they gave you a candy bar!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They gave us a candy bar called the Lion Bar. It was a <em>very<\/em> good candy bar. We all ate our candy bar every day for lunch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, when you\u2019re starving to death, anything will taste good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s how we got full. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It does taste better.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure listeners wonder exactly what the theme of today\u2019s program is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s candy! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to admit\u2014when you told me you wanted to talk about diplomatic relations with Barbara in the middle of the presidential election cycle, I thought, \u201cThis should be interesting.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Diplomatic relations with Barbara. Now, there are a lot of ways to take that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s true; that\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t even think about that! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me\u2014you wanted to talk with Barbara about the issue of diplomatic relations. How\u2019s that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is more accurate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve been talking about\u2014just as a couple\u2014how Paul exhorts us, over in the book of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t2 Corinthians, Chapter 5\u2014he exhorts us to be ambassadors for Christ. Barbara got me off on this. It\u2019s really caused me to start thinking differently about my identity \/ who I am on a daily basis. It wasn\u2019t that I didn\u2019t think about this before, but she saw a video of a person in a foreign country that kind of prompted this with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I think our listeners are going to be encouraged by what we talk about here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was the video you saw?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I found a video, maybe five-minutes long \/ maybe, six-minutes long, about this individual who lived in an Eastern European country, described as a very atheistic country. This individual had a plaque on the outside of the entrance to their home\u2014the plaque said, \u201cEmbassy of the King of Heaven.\u201d The story goes about how this person lived in this Communist country and has lived through multiple regime changes. Yet, one constant has remained the same; that is that the country in which this person lives is <em>not<\/em> really his home. This person really belongs to the kingdom of heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So the home that this person lives in\u2014we\u2019ve been calling it \u201cthis person\u201d because we\u2019ve been asked not to talk about the name, or the identity, or even the gender of the person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct; correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Although, if our listeners want to go see the video, we\u2019ve got a link to it on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ll call him a man. This man lives in a home that, from his perspective\u2014that is different soil than the country\u2014that when he walks out of his front door, he walks into a different place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014into a foreign country because he believes that his home belongs to the kingdom of heaven. He even says on the video: \u201cMy home represents the King that I serve; and so I want my home to reflect the King. I have things on my wall \/ the way I conduct myself all represents my King.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe video shows him going to the market\u2014buying things \/ bringing things back\u2014so that he can entertain guests. Some of them have called for an appointment to visit with him. He considers himself an ambassador\u2014these people have called and want to come and talk. There are others who see the sign on his front door \/ next to his front door and just knock. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says the Holy Spirit brings these people. People come and want to talk about troubles in their lives; or things that they\u2019re going through; or they want to know, \u201cWho is this King of heaven that you serve and that you belong to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you saw the video, and it just got you thinking differently about your own life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, I saw the video; and it just was so powerful to watch this person and to hear this person, who is an elderly person, who has lived almost 80 years of life. I was just inspired by the story because I realized that\u2019s true for all of us, who are believers in Christ: \u201cI am an ambassador.\u201d All three of us are ambassadors. Our children are ambassadors. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat means the home that I live in \/ the home that we live in should be an embassy of the King. Therefore: \u201cHow can I\u201d--especially me, as a woman\u2014\u201cHow can I make my home\u2014which I\u2019m always conscious of and aware of \/ I\u2019m always trying to improve our home\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014how do I make our home represent the King \/ the King that I belong to?\u201d\u2014because my home is not really the property that we live on \/ my home is really in heaven. We\u2019re here temporarily, and God has us here about His plan and about His purposes. So: \u201cHow can I be more connected with what He wants me to do? And how can my home be more of a representative of Him, the King?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think this conversation, Bob, has never been more relevant for our country. I\u2019m hearing a ton of fear. There are all of these culture wars that are taking place in our country right now. I think followers of Christ have to go back and go: \u201cHow do I live in the midst of this?! How am I supposed to behave? Who am I?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Bob, we interviewed a pastor from Simi Valley, California, who wrote a book called <em>Messy Grace<\/em>. His name is Caleb Kaltenbach, and it\u2019s going to be aired later on in September. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe made a statement in the interview\u2014it really hit me. I\u2019ve been chewing on this all summer\u2014he said: \u201cChristians today have to realize we are no longer the home team. We are the <em>visiting<\/em> team.\u201d So, if we\u2019re the visiting team, then we need to figure out: \u201cHow do you behave on a visitor\u2019s court? And how do you relate to people around these messy issues and do so in a way that\u2019s winsome \/ that leaves the aroma of Christ? And\u2014this is very important for you, parents \/ listen up!\u2014how do you train your kids to do this at school?\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand as they go to the university?\u2014and as they grow up to establish their own homes?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m telling you\u2014it is game time! And we\u2019re on the visitors\u2019 court. We better do this job well because I think, right now, the winds of the culture have really completely shifted. We\u2019re no longer flowing with the winds\u2014we\u2019re going against the winds \/ going against the tide\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we\u2019re on the visitors\u2019 court\u2014however you wish to say it. We need to know who we are; that is, ambassadors for Christ. We need to know why we\u2019re here. We are here to represent Him. We need to be on mission, and we need to be training our kids to be on mission as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why this conversation with Barbara is so important\u2014to be thinking of our home as an embassy in a foreign land.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara, you may know the old song: \u201cThis world is not my home. I\u2019m just a passin\u2019 through,\u201d that people used to sing in church. It\u2019s really a picture of where we are. We are\u2014I think it was Peter who said\u2014\u201cstrangers and aliens\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is not our homeland; and yet, we are citizens of the United States\u2014we are bound by the laws \/ we need to be good citizens as we live in this country\u2014but there\u2019s a higher allegiance; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> There is a higher allegiance. I think, for the most part, we\u2019ve forgotten that this isn\u2019t our home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a little bit of a paradox to live in this land and yet to be mindful that this isn\u2019t our home. But it\u2019s a good reminder. I think that would be a great hymn for us to start singing in church again because I don\u2019t think we think about that enough. I think our roots have gone down too deep into the soil of this land; and we\u2019ve forgotten that we really belong to another place, another time, and another King\u2014and that\u2019s whom we serve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; and if our country is kind of unstable\u2014and there\u2019s a lot of fear in the country, and your roots are in that soil\u2014it is going to reveal where you truly think your homeland is. I think, <em>again<\/em>: \u201cAre you first and foremost an American, or are you first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ?\u2014a child of the King and, therefore, an ambassador of the King of kings and the Lord of lords.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let\u2019s not assume that everybody knows exactly what an embassy is. I mean, we\u2019ve heard that word. I\u2019ve been to Washington, DC, and been down Embassy Row\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Embassy Row; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which is a series of houses \/ nice houses\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014with different signs out front of those houses from different nations. Explain what an embassy is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> One of the things that you would find interesting\u2014anybody who visits an embassy \/ if you went down Embassy Row\u2014the houses are all slightly different \/ they\u2019re not the same. They have a sign outside that\u2019s different. Usually, there\u2019s a flag representing that country; but if you walk in the front door of that embassy, you\u2019re going to be greeted with sights, and sounds, and probably even <em>smells<\/em> from that home country. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you went into the American Embassy in Africa\u2014in some African nation\u2014or the American Embassy in Beijing, it would not look like China when you walked in the door \/ it would not look like Uganda when you walked in the door. When you walk in the door of the American Embassy, you see framed pictures of our national heroes\u2014George Washington and Abraham Lincoln would be on the wall. You would see the American flag. The embassies have kitchens. You would probably smell American food cooking. There would be air-conditioning \/ carpeting\u2014it would <em>feel<\/em> like being home in America. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe embassy is a piece of <em>that<\/em> country on foreign soil. For instance, the soil that the American Embassy sits on\u2014in whatever country we have an embassy\u2014that soil literally belongs to the United States.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The people on that soil are governed by US law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If they commit a crime, it\u2019s adjudicated in US courts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s just like they\u2019re in a part of America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It just happens to be a square\u2014half mile or whatever it is\u2014in China.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. For instance, if you\u2019re in another country\u2014we were traveling, say, in China\u2014and we had some kind of problem \/ some kind of trouble\u2014we, because we\u2019re American citizens, would go to the American Embassy for help. The staff of the American Embassy is there to help American citizens, who are traveling, or working, or serving in that country. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re also there to engage with local citizens, too, because there are people who come to the American Embassy to get a visa to travel to the United States. They serve lots of different purposes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, one thing that you all mentioned\u2014as you\u2019re going down Embassy Row, you see these flags. As you get closer to the embassy, there are these plaques \/ the signage on the front door or near the front door of the embassy that identifies the building as being an American embassy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve actually created a plaque that could be screwed into the wall in the front of the home, much like this person we talked about has in front of their home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; yes. Well, after watching this video, and seeing that this person had a plaque on the outside of their home, I thought: \u201cI want a plaque on the outside of my house. I want the UPS guy, or the neighbor who comes over, or someone who just drives by to see that: \u201cIn this house, we belong to the King of heaven. We belong to another country.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided I wanted one of those plaques. I didn\u2019t know where to get one; so we had one made. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it\u2019s got a crown\u2014it\u2019s got a crown.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. It says, \u201cEmbassy of the King\u201d and it has a crown on it because we belong to the King. It is metal, and it can be permanently installed on the exterior of your house if you want to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Has this been permanently installed on the exterior of your house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Not yet, because I haven\u2019t had it long enough. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I can promise you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But it will be!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014as the handyman of the house, it will!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can imagine coming home\u2014that as I come home \/ you come home from work\u2014as we go in our front door, we might just reach out and touch that. You know, when you see something that\u2019s metal like this, if it\u2019s in a museum, people touch it. You can see it\u2019s kind of worn down a bit after hundreds\/ thousands of people have touched it. This is not brass; this is stainless steel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I think just to touch it\u2014much like a player going out of the locker room\u2014I think it would be good for us just to maybe remind our children and us, as we leave home \/ as we come back home: \u201cThis is an embassy of the King, and <em>I<\/em> am an ambassador.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And not only that\u2014I just imagine what that would be like because, when we all leave home, as you were talking earlier, we\u2019re going into enemy territory. I think we forget\u2014when we go out on a day-to-day basis\u2014that we\u2019re on the business of the King. I think we are so prone to get caught up in my \u201cto do\u201d list, or the things I\u2019ve got to check off, or all the errands I have to run, or whatever it might be that we forget that we have been called to live for the King. So, when we leave our front door every day, or get in our car to go to school, or get on the bus, or whatever, I think it\u2019s very easy to forget that \u201cI\u2019ve been called today to live for the King and for His business and not my own.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You mentioned that you had this stainless steel plaque made for your home. We should mention you had a few extra made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; a few extra. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014so we could offer these to listeners who might want one. In addition to the plaques, you\u2019ve had banners and signage that you\u2019ve printed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, we made two other versions. We made the one that can be permanently mounted on the outside of your home; but for people\u2014who live in apartments, or you may be in a rental house, or you don\u2019t know if you\u2019re going to be where you are for very long\u2014you might want something that would be easier to take with you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I know! That\u2019s why I was a little confused. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob\u2019s in Song of Solomon\u2014we\u2019re never going to recover this broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDeuteronomy 6: \u201cHear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.\u201d Then verse 8: \u201cYou shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes; you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think God, in establishing the nation of Israel, was trying to remind them\u2014much like Tony Mitchell\u2019s [Christian Alliance for Orphans] dad: \u201cHere\u2019s who you are. Now, don\u2019t forget: \u2018I\u2019m your God. You\u2019re My people. You\u2019re to represent Me.\u2019\u201d We\u2019re going to have some stuff hanging on the front of the house to signify that we\u2019re not just another family. We are a family that knows Yahweh, the King of kings \/ the Lord of lords.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think\u2014again, just back to where we are today in our culture\u2014I just think, in the midst of a lot of fear \/ in the midst of a lot of controversy, believers need to know who they are and whose they are. They need to be representing Him with excellence, and they need to be training their children to do the same. You\u2019ve come up, also, with a little booklet that has got a number of devotionals to go through with your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; we\u2019ve got four discussions, for lack of a better word, that you can do with your kids\u2014a couple of stories to read and then some things to talk about that will help you communicate to your kids: \u201cWhat does it mean to be an ambassador? What does it mean to represent Christ?\u201d It just gives you an opportunity, as a family, to talk about: \u201cHow can we make our home be a better embassy? How can we better represent Christ?\u201d I think they\u2019re good discussions for parents to have with their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and the questions are available in a free e-book edition if folks are interested in having those conversations. I think they\u2019re good conversations to have.
