That doesn\u2019t mean you agree with their lifestyle. Yes, everybody says we\u2019re hatred and we\u2019re everything else. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s because of our beliefs. I think it\u2019s the way we often communicate our beliefs\u2014it\u2019s our attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, August 19<sup>th<\/sup>. What should it look like for us, as Christians, not to simply be tolerant, but to be genuinely showing love to all? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll explore that today with Josh McDowell. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I\u2019ve been sitting here thinking about the area in our culture today where there is a new expectation of tolerance\u2014where, 20 years ago, there was not necessarily an expectation of tolerance in this area\u2014but today, it\u2019s pretty much a requirement that you are going to be tolerant. That\u2019s the area of gender and sexuality and the fluidity that is going on there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the definition of marriage, Bob. It\u2019s really interesting\u2014for the most part, those of us, who are followers of Christ, are known as being intolerant and unloving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And of course, the reason we\u2019ve been thinking about this is because we\u2019ve been talking about a book called <em>The Beauty of Intolerance,<\/em> which is a provocative title and a provocative author who is here with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Along with his son, Sean McDowell, Josh has written another book. Number one hundred\u2014what did you say\u2014147 books now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nine\u201449. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>One hundred forty-nine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. By the time this airs, it will be 150. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, we\u2019re glad to have you back, Josh. You\u2019re a good friend, and you\u2019ve been in the spiritual bunker for a number of years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou tell a story in this book about your daughter, Katie. When she was in high school, you asked her if she was worried about going to school with her friends and having a dad who was an evangelist. She had an interesting answer to your question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, her answer overall was this\u2014she said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cDad, you raised me to know what I believe and why I believe it. You\u2019ve taught me to be loving.\u201d\u00a0 But the thing that she really brought out\u2014she said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDad, my friends\u2014they all think the world of you. They love you. They admire you.\u201d\u00a0 Why would that be?\u2014because whenever her friends were over at home and I walked in, I always took time with the friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe lived right in the center of a Native American reservation. We\u2019d have three, four, five, six Native Americans there. I\u2019d go right over, sit down on the floor, interact, and be with them. I\u2019d go to school\u2014I\u2019d meet their friends. We would serve at school. I\u2019d go to the ball games and sit there at practice and root for the <em>team<\/em>. As a result, my children felt very comfortable to stand up for what they believed because they knew <em>why<\/em> they believed it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor example, in one of the classes with my daughter, Katie, again, the teacher called me\u2014who was a Catholic\u2014he was. He said, \u201cYou\u2019d have been so proud of your daughter today.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, we had a discussion on abortion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYour daughter finally\u2014the whole class was ready to vote\u2014and it would have gone \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t99 percent that abortion is okay\u2014and Katie stood up and she said, \u2018Do you realize what you\u2019re doing?\u2019\u00a0 And she gave some lines on the value of life of the baby in the womb. She said, \u2018All of you know my little sister, who was adopted. Do you know her mother, well, could have aborted her?\u00a0 But because her mother chose life, you all know my sister. You\u2019ve held her in your arms and everything else.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThe <em>entire<\/em> class voted 100 percent against abortion.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see\u2014that\u2019s the value of raising a child with <em>convictions<\/em>, not just a good belief system. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the difference between a good belief system and convictions is what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, a conviction \/ a biblical conviction\u2014one, is knowing what you believe\u2014that\u2019s very important. The second is\u2014knowing <em>why<\/em> you believe it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Third: experiencing it. You see, in the younger culture today, if it\u2019s true, it will work. For adults with kids\u2014\u201cIf it works, it is true.\u201d\u00a0 So, now, that\u2019s biblical also\u2014that, you know, if it\u2019s true, it should work in your life; and if it\u2019s working, it should be true. So, I raised my children to be able to experience what I taught them. So, for my kids, that even more reinforced it\u2019s true. Why?\u00a0 Because they were experiencing it, which their culture says, \u201cIt is true then.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I got a note from one of my adult children\u2014and I\u2019ll leave this mom unnamed\u2014but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That was Barbara?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\u00a0 No\u2014not her. But anyway, she told Barbara\u2014she said, \u201cI just want to thank you and Dennis for taking your grandchildren to the Creation Museum two summers ago and spending several days there, having fun, but hearing about a worldview that is different from the culture that we are in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she said, \u201cOur kids are running into all kinds of issues at school as they\u2019re teaching evolution and a different worldview based upon man being the central authority. That trip to the Creation Museum with you guys, as grandparents\u2014talking to them about what they\u2019re seeing, and why they need to think the way they are thinking, and beginning to experience it and, then, proclaim it has helped them have convictions to stand up in their classroom.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this is not high school stuff\u2014this is grade school stuff. They are facing challenges to their faith today; and that\u2019s what you are really writing about in your book, <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. You\u2019re helping parents equip their kids to know how to think, how to believe, and how to stand for what the Scripture teaches. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You just hit on one of the <em>biggest<\/em> things of passing your faith onto your children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to find opportunities to teach truth to your children in a way they\u2019ll understand it. Going to the museum\u2014spending two days there\u2014I wish every parent could do that with their child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI used movies a lot\u2014we\u2019d go to it\u2014but I\u2019d always make sure we went out to their favorite restaurant, which was a steak place, and we would interact on it. So, like you took them to the museum to interact, I often took movies; or we chose\u2014oh! \/ parents do this\u2014for example, there is Summit Ministries in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u2014Colorado Springs, Colorado. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our kids went there as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Oh my!\u2014there\u2014they went there. They were challenged with everything they believed and why they believed it. This was what I did\u2014the moment we picked them up, I already had in my mind questions for my kids: \u201cWell, what did you learn here?\u00a0 Well, why did you learn that?\u00a0 Well, how do you know that\u2019s true?\u201d\u2014everything. I felt, as a parent, I had the responsibility to take it one step further. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in the book, I share how to do that with television, with the internet, and with films. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Didn\u2019t your kids\u2014they had to, at some point, just go, \u201cDad, please, give us a break.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cBack off!\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cJust let us not have to answer every question \/ answer why on everything. Dad, just let us rest here.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You know\u2014I never had that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I always\u2014now, boy, this can be touchy\u2014but I raised my children, even on limits and everything else, to negotiate with them. Why?\u00a0 I was responsible for teaching my children how to think, how to make decisions, how to draw conclusions. If I always told them, \u201cWell, you have to be home at 10 o\u2019clock,\u201d that didn\u2019t help them. So, I\u2019d always say, \u201cWell, what time do you think you ought to be home?\u201d Like this one time\u2014Katie said, \u201c11:30.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou know, honey, I think you need to be in at 10. Let me share with you why I think 10 o\u2019clock.\u201d\u00a0 It came out to be 10:30, which I really wanted anyway\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but you see, my daughter went through the process of determining, \u201cWhat time?\u2019\u00a0 It was her decision \/ not Daddy\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she learned how to think logically, how to process, how to make choices\u2014where, if you always answer your kids\u2019 questions, they don\u2019t go through that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But there were times when you said, \u201cHere\u2019s what is going to happen whether you want it or not\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, yes; that\u2019s when I said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to McDonald\u2019s and eat and not the expensive place down the street.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Josh, I\u2019m sure I got this from you because I took my kids to the movies as well. We\u2019d go out to a place to eat\u2014it wasn\u2019t a steak house like you did\u2014but we\u2019d go out to eat\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>No; it was a pretty cheap steak house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; okay. But we\u2019d go out to eat, and we would talk about: \u201cWhat did you just see?\u00a0 What was the story line?\u00a0 What was that based on?\u00a0 What was the message?\u201d\u00a0 And we interacted around it. Here is the thing, Josh\u2014by the time they were raised to adulthood, they were coming back to me and to Barbara\u2014and they were saying, \u201cHey, Mom\/Dad, can\u2019t we just go to a movie?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cJust watch one?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cCan\u2019t we just <em>watch<\/em> one?\u00a0 Can\u2019t we just do it?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 As long as I\u2019m your parent, we\u2019re going to interact about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe\u2019re going to know how to think critically about it.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s fun, now, to see our 22 grandchildren as they go to a movie; and now, they are doing the same thing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014with\u2014or they\u2019re not taking them to the movie because of the messages that they are seeing there. They\u2019re pushing back on it, but they got it. They heard, Josh. So, your illustration has been used by Barbara and me and, now, by our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Let me ask you a question: \u201cHow many movies with your kids did you get up and walk out?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we did do that. I don\u2019t know the number. I know several we didn\u2019t go to just because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because you knew what was in them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, I would say we got up and walked out of probably five to seven movies because what came up was unexpected and wasn\u2019t\u2014but they were probably some of the best teaching times. We\u2019d go out and I\u2019d say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cSon, why did I not want us to sit there, as a family, and watch that?\u201d\u00a0 See, I didn\u2019t tell them why\u2014I asked. Every time, they\u2019d come up with the answer:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s not our family values,\u201d etc. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember\u2014with Sean, we went home. He was into Depeche Mode. I don\u2019t know if you remember that band. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>It was quite a while ago. He loved it. He saved his money and bought this new disc \/ went home. I said, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019m erasing some of the songs.\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 He was sitting on the floor of his room, and I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause it doesn\u2019t meet our family values.\u201d\u00a0 I walked out, and I went, \u201cYes!!!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>It rubbed in!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, here\u2019s my story on that. We went to see a live play, and it was actually a play that I had been in, in high school. The version we did in high school was a little tamer than the version that was now on the theatre stage. We\u2019re there, and we\u2019re watching the play. In Act 1, something happens. One of the characters says something\u2014uses profanity or something. I\u2019m watching the play; and as soon as they say it, every kid in the row turns and looks at me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re watching the play, character says it, and kids look at me. And I\u2019m looking straight forward going: \u201cOkay\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Pressure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. So, I let it go the first time. The second time it happens, every face looks at <em>me<\/em>. Pretty soon, I realize they\u2019re asking the question: \u201cDad, is this now okay?\u00a0 Is it okay for us to do?\u201d\u00a0 At half-time, we left the play\u2014even though I wanted to stay and see it because I had been in the play in high school. But I had to make a statement to my kids: \u201cThis is not what we\u2019re going to tolerate. There are things that are worth being intolerant about, and I\u2019m going to be intolerant about this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s really the theme of the book, <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. Our guest is Josh McDowell, and we\u2019re talking about that today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJosh, we started off by talking about the area in the culture today where tolerance is being required of us. That\u2019s around gender roles, and around marriage, and around LGBT rights, and how we\u2019re going to deal with that. If you\u2019re raising a son or a daughter in this culture, you are facing a <em>huge<\/em> issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you teach your kids to be intolerant of this without being labeled as hateful?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You need to start with your own children. By the time those issues come up, I pray to God you\u2019ve already established what is right \/ what is wrong; \u201cWhy is it right?\u201d \/ \u201cWhy is it wrong?\u201d; \u201cWhat is marriage? Who created marriage?\u2014Why marriage?\u201d\u00a0 And then, when it comes up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Josh, let me just stop you there\u2014because you mentioned it on an earlier broadcast\u2014and the basis of our beliefs is because God exists, and He is the One who has declared what is true \/ what the standard is, and He is the God of all truth. That\u2019s <em>why<\/em> we believe what we believe. It\u2019s based upon God and who He is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>This is why I also said there: \u201cYou need to teach your children the very character of God because right from wrong stems from the <em>character<\/em>. Lying is wrong because God is truth. Impurity is wrong because God is pure. Injustice is wrong because God is just. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cRighteousness is right because God is righteous.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not because of you, me, the culture, the law, or anything else. Just because something is legal doesn\u2019t make it right\u2014it just makes it legal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI taught my kids: \u201cThe character of God is your basis for it.\u201d\u00a0 Now, when it comes to this, I pray to God you already have a context out of which to deal with these cultural issues. If not, start building right there. But here\u2019s where you have to be careful. You need to show that loving attitude\u2014loving the individual but not accepting their beliefs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know one way I did that?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if anyone else ever did this. We lived up in Julian, California. And when we moved to Texas, we still did it. We would vacation or spend time in Laguna Beach, and there is an area of Laguna Beach that\u2019s quite highly inhabited by the homosexual lifestyle \/ lesbian lifestyle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would stay in a hotel right in the center of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe always had breakfast in this corner caf\u00e9, which was totally transgender\u2014everything else. We always went there with our kids. We got to know them. We\u2019d walk in, and Jade\u2014we didn\u2019t even have to order. He knew what to order for the whole family\u2014everything else. I wanted my children to be comfortable around gays \/ others. I wanted them to know, and understand, and love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember this one fellow, Jade\u2014he became\u2014he, now, died of AIDS. I miss him. Yesterday, I was thinking of him\u2014I <em>really<\/em> miss <em>Jade<\/em>. He was a dear friend\u2014he didn\u2019t come to Christ, but he was a true friend. He knew where I stood, and I knew where he stood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne time, I said to Jade\u2014I said, \u201cJade, do you have a few moments now?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cSit down here.\u201d\u00a0 I had two of my daughters and my son there. I said, \u201cWill you tell my children, \u2018What is it like being gay in America?\u00a0 What are some of your fears and everything?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 My kids were just\u2014eyes wide open. And listen\u2014why did I do that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted them to see that gays are people. They\u2019re created in the image of God with infinite value, dignity, and worth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cGod\u2014Jesus died as much for a gay as He did for <em>you,<\/em> kids, and we need to love the gays.\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean\u2014Jade knows I don\u2019t accept his lifestyle, but he listens to me. Why?\u00a0 Because Jade always knew Dottie and I <em>loved<\/em> him. All the cooks \/ everyone in the restaurant knew we cared. We remembered them by name. I\u2019d come back from Ireland. I\u2019d bring back some of those Irish cookies or something else, and I\u2019d give them out to everybody there. But they all knew where I stood\u2014I didn\u2019t compromise that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But let me tell you\u2014the whole ground work\u2014they knew I cared, and I loved them. I didn\u2019t judge them as individuals \/ I judged their lifestyle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Josh, there\u2019s probably a listener, right now, who may have stumbled onto our broadcast. They are kind of listening and they\u2019re going, \u201cYou\u2019re talking about God in a very personal way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know this because I know you well. Your life was <em>invaded<\/em> by the person of Jesus Christ when you were a young man, and He changed your life. And in many regards, God\u2019s intolerance of your sin\u2014of you being a lawbreaker \/ of you going against God and His ways\u2014God\u2019s intolerance resulted in your salvation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you share how that occurred; and how a person, who is listening today, who doesn\u2019t know Jesus Christ, might be able to experience the love of God?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know how I could explain it any better than what you just did, Dennis. But I was a non-believer\u2014very\u2014I was mad at God. I was hurt. I was bitter because, from six to thirteen years of age\u2014for seven years \/ every single week for seven years\u2014I was homosexually raped. I was forced for eight years to look at homosexual pornography\u2014not hetero\u2014homosexual pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was mad at my dad \/ my mom for not stopping it. I was mad at God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd what happened was\u2014I met these students and professors at Kellogg College\u2014their lives were different. They seemed to genuinely love each other, and they loved people outside the group. I said, \u201cWhat made you different?\u201d\u00a0 And this young lady looked at me and said, \u201cJesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cOh, for God\u2019s sake!\u00a0 Don\u2019t give me that garbage.\u201d\u00a0 So, they challenged me to intellectually examine. That\u2019s why I did it\u2014to refute them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I found was this\u2014that my life is not compatible with the holy, just, righteous nature of God\u2014that\u2019s called sin. There was nothing I could do about it. God is so righteous \/ so just; but what I learned was that God loved me, Josh McDowell, so much that, if I\u2019d been the only\u2014I still get chills when I think of this\u2014the only person in the world, He still would have sent His Son to die on the cross for my sins. He died for what the world would call an act of intolerance because He said: \u201cIt is sin. It is wrong,\u201d and that goes against tolerance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut He was willing to pay the price for it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when I realized that, the God who created the universe wants me, Josh McDowell, to spend eternity with Him\u2014it broke down my barriers. Already, intellectually, I had come to the conclusion that God is and Christ is the Son of God and was raised from the dead; but what brought me to Christ was the love of God\u2014it totally changed my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But this is one of the things in my life\u2014relates back to going to Laguna Beach and the homosexual community. I was bitter. I was hurt by a homosexual, and I just couldn\u2019t <em>stand<\/em> homosexuals. I said\u2014and when I became a Christian, I thought, \u201cYou know, God has commanded me to love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut one of the biggest things to not loving someone is ignorance. So, I said, \u201cI have got to get to know, in a real way, some gay men and some lesbian women.\u201d\u00a0 So, we would go to Laguna Beach, and I\u2019d meet real gay men. And I really found out: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I <em>like<\/em> some of these folks.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt started to deal with my ignorance, and I was set free to love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I would say a major part of my healing was getting to know gays and coming to love them\u2014not agreeing with them\u2014coming to love them, spending time with them, listening to their journey, their heart, their fears. And whenever I did that, they would always listen to my journey \/ my fears. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when there is a lack of knowledge, there is fear\u2014and understanding, when you read this book, you won\u2019t fear tolerance\u2014you\u2019ll come to understand tolerance. As a result, you\u2019ll be able more to demonstrate a positive, loving attitude when you disagree with someone and in training your own children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The book Josh is talking about is the book he has written with his son, Sean, called <em>The Beauty of Intolerance: Setting a Generation Free to Know Truth and Love<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>When was the last time you had a gay man, or a lesbian woman, or someone else over for dinner?\u2014where, like anyone else, you\u2019d ask them, \u201cWhat is your journey?\u201d\u2014where your kids can know them and see they are human \/ they are wonderful. That doesn\u2019t mean you agree with their lifestyle. Yes, everybody says we\u2019re hatred and we\u2019re everything else. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s because of our beliefs. I think it\u2019s the way we often communicate our beliefs\u2014it\u2019s our attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, August 19<sup>th<\/sup>. What should it look like for us, as Christians, not to simply be tolerant, but to be genuinely showing love to all? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ll explore that today with Josh McDowell. Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. I\u2019ve been sitting here thinking about the area in our culture today where there is a new expectation of tolerance\u2014where, 20 years ago, there was not necessarily an expectation of tolerance in this area\u2014but today, it\u2019s pretty much a requirement that you are going to be tolerant. That\u2019s the area of gender and sexuality and the fluidity that is going on there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the definition of marriage, Bob. It\u2019s really interesting\u2014for the most part, those of us, who are followers of Christ, are known as being intolerant and unloving. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And of course, the reason we\u2019ve been thinking about this is because we\u2019ve been talking about a book called <em>The Beauty of Intolerance,<\/em> which is a provocative title and a provocative author who is here with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Along with his son, Sean McDowell, Josh has written another book. Number one hundred\u2014what did you say\u2014147 books now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nine\u201449. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>One hundred forty-nine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. By the time this airs, it will be 150. [Laughter]\u00a0 So, we\u2019re glad to have you back, Josh. You\u2019re a good friend, and you\u2019ve been in the spiritual bunker for a number of years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou tell a story in this book about your daughter, Katie. When she was in high school, you asked her if she was worried about going to school with her friends and having a dad who was an evangelist. She had an interesting answer to your question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, her answer overall was this\u2014she said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cDad, you raised me to know what I believe and why I believe it. You\u2019ve taught me to be loving.\u201d\u00a0 But the thing that she really brought out\u2014she said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDad, my friends\u2014they all think the world of you. They love you. They admire you.\u201d\u00a0 Why would that be?\u2014because whenever her friends were over at home and I walked in, I always took time with the friends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe lived right in the center of a Native American reservation. We\u2019d have three, four, five, six Native Americans there. I\u2019d go right over, sit down on the floor, interact, and be with them. I\u2019d go to school\u2014I\u2019d meet their friends. We would serve at school. I\u2019d go to the ball games and sit there at practice and root for the <em>team<\/em>. As a result, my children felt very comfortable to stand up for what they believed because they knew <em>why<\/em> they believed it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor example, in one of the classes with my daughter, Katie, again, the teacher called me\u2014who was a Catholic\u2014he was. He said, \u201cYou\u2019d have been so proud of your daughter today.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, we had a discussion on abortion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYour daughter finally\u2014the whole class was ready to vote\u2014and it would have gone \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t99 percent that abortion is okay\u2014and Katie stood up and she said, \u2018Do you realize what you\u2019re doing?\u2019\u00a0 And she gave some lines on the value of life of the baby in the womb. She said, \u2018All of you know my little sister, who was adopted. Do you know her mother, well, could have aborted her?\u00a0 But because her mother chose life, you all know my sister. You\u2019ve held her in your arms and everything else.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThe <em>entire<\/em> class voted 100 percent against abortion.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see\u2014that\u2019s the value of raising a child with <em>convictions<\/em>, not just a good belief system. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the difference between a good belief system and convictions is what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, a conviction \/ a biblical conviction\u2014one, is knowing what you believe\u2014that\u2019s very important. The second is\u2014knowing <em>why<\/em> you believe it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Third: experiencing it. You see, in the younger culture today, if it\u2019s true, it will work. For adults with kids\u2014\u201cIf it works, it is true.\u201d\u00a0 So, now, that\u2019s biblical also\u2014that, you know, if it\u2019s true, it should work in your life; and if it\u2019s working, it should be true. So, I raised my children to be able to experience what I taught them. So, for my kids, that even more reinforced it\u2019s true. Why?\u00a0 Because they were experiencing it, which their culture says, \u201cIt is true then.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I got a note from one of my adult children\u2014and I\u2019ll leave this mom unnamed\u2014but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That was Barbara?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. [Laughter]\u00a0 No\u2014not her. But anyway, she told Barbara\u2014she said, \u201cI just want to thank you and Dennis for taking your grandchildren to the Creation Museum two summers ago and spending several days there, having fun, but hearing about a worldview that is different from the culture that we are in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she said, \u201cOur kids are running into all kinds of issues at school as they\u2019re teaching evolution and a different worldview based upon man being the central authority. That trip to the Creation Museum with you guys, as grandparents\u2014talking to them about what they\u2019re seeing, and why they need to think the way they are thinking, and beginning to experience it and, then, proclaim it has helped them have convictions to stand up in their classroom.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this is not high school stuff\u2014this is grade school stuff. They are facing challenges to their faith today; and that\u2019s what you are really writing about in your book, <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. You\u2019re helping parents equip their kids to know how to think, how to believe, and how to stand for what the Scripture teaches. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You just hit on one of the <em>biggest<\/em> things of passing your faith onto your children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to find opportunities to teach truth to your children in a way they\u2019ll understand it. Going to the museum\u2014spending two days there\u2014I wish every parent could do that with their child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI used movies a lot\u2014we\u2019d go to it\u2014but I\u2019d always make sure we went out to their favorite restaurant, which was a steak place, and we would interact on it. So, like you took them to the museum to interact, I often took movies; or we chose\u2014oh! \/ parents do this\u2014for example, there is Summit Ministries in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u2014Colorado Springs, Colorado. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our kids went there as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Oh my!\u2014there\u2014they went there. They were challenged with everything they believed and why they believed it. This was what I did\u2014the moment we picked them up, I already had in my mind questions for my kids: \u201cWell, what did you learn here?\u00a0 Well, why did you learn that?\u00a0 Well, how do you know that\u2019s true?\u201d\u2014everything. I felt, as a parent, I had the responsibility to take it one step further. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in the book, I share how to do that with television, with the internet, and with films. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Didn\u2019t your kids\u2014they had to, at some point, just go, \u201cDad, please, give us a break.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cBack off!\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cJust let us not have to answer every question \/ answer why on everything. Dad, just let us rest here.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You know\u2014I never had that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I always\u2014now, boy, this can be touchy\u2014but I raised my children, even on limits and everything else, to negotiate with them. Why?\u00a0 I was responsible for teaching my children how to think, how to make decisions, how to draw conclusions. If I always told them, \u201cWell, you have to be home at 10 o\u2019clock,\u201d that didn\u2019t help them. So, I\u2019d always say, \u201cWell, what time do you think you ought to be home?\u201d Like this one time\u2014Katie said, \u201c11:30.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cYou know, honey, I think you need to be in at 10. Let me share with you why I think 10 o\u2019clock.\u201d\u00a0 It came out to be 10:30, which I really wanted anyway\u2014[Laughter]\u2014but you see, my daughter went through the process of determining, \u201cWhat time?\u2019\u00a0 It was her decision \/ not Daddy\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she learned how to think logically, how to process, how to make choices\u2014where, if you always answer your kids\u2019 questions, they don\u2019t go through that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But there were times when you said, \u201cHere\u2019s what is going to happen whether you want it or not\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, yes; that\u2019s when I said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to McDonald\u2019s and eat and not the expensive place down the street.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Josh, I\u2019m sure I got this from you because I took my kids to the movies as well. We\u2019d go out to a place to eat\u2014it wasn\u2019t a steak house like you did\u2014but we\u2019d go out to eat\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>No; it was a pretty cheap steak house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; okay. But we\u2019d go out to eat, and we would talk about: \u201cWhat did you just see?\u00a0 What was the story line?\u00a0 What was that based on?\u00a0 What was the message?\u201d\u00a0 And we interacted around it. Here is the thing, Josh\u2014by the time they were raised to adulthood, they were coming back to me and to Barbara\u2014and they were saying, \u201cHey, Mom\/Dad, can\u2019t we just go to a movie?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cJust watch one?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cCan\u2019t we just <em>watch<\/em> one?\u00a0 Can\u2019t we just do it?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 As long as I\u2019m your parent, we\u2019re going to interact about this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe\u2019re going to know how to think critically about it.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s fun, now, to see our 22 grandchildren as they go to a movie; and now, they are doing the same thing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That\u2019s right!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014with\u2014or they\u2019re not taking them to the movie because of the messages that they are seeing there. They\u2019re pushing back on it, but they got it. They heard, Josh. So, your illustration has been used by Barbara and me and, now, by our kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Let me ask you a question: \u201cHow many movies with your kids did you get up and walk out?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, we did do that. I don\u2019t know the number. I know several we didn\u2019t go to just because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because you knew what was in them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Well, I would say we got up and walked out of probably five to seven movies because what came up was unexpected and wasn\u2019t\u2014but they were probably some of the best teaching times. We\u2019d go out and I\u2019d say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cSon, why did I not want us to sit there, as a family, and watch that?\u201d\u00a0 See, I didn\u2019t tell them why\u2014I asked. Every time, they\u2019d come up with the answer:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s not our family values,\u201d etc. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember\u2014with Sean, we went home. He was into Depeche Mode. I don\u2019t know if you remember that band. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>It was quite a while ago. He loved it. He saved his money and bought this new disc \/ went home. I said, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019m erasing some of the songs.\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 He was sitting on the floor of his room, and I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause it doesn\u2019t meet our family values.\u201d\u00a0 I walked out, and I went, \u201cYes!!!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No doubt about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>It rubbed in!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, here\u2019s my story on that. We went to see a live play, and it was actually a play that I had been in, in high school. The version we did in high school was a little tamer than the version that was now on the theatre stage. We\u2019re there, and we\u2019re watching the play. In Act 1, something happens. One of the characters says something\u2014uses profanity or something. I\u2019m watching the play; and as soon as they say it, every kid in the row turns and looks at me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re watching the play, character says it, and kids look at me. And I\u2019m looking straight forward going: \u201cOkay\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Pressure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. So, I let it go the first time. The second time it happens, every face looks at <em>me<\/em>. Pretty soon, I realize they\u2019re asking the question: \u201cDad, is this now okay?\u00a0 Is it okay for us to do?\u201d\u00a0 At half-time, we left the play\u2014even though I wanted to stay and see it because I had been in the play in high school. But I had to make a statement to my kids: \u201cThis is not what we\u2019re going to tolerate. There are things that are worth being intolerant about, and I\u2019m going to be intolerant about this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s really the theme of the book, <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. Our guest is Josh McDowell, and we\u2019re talking about that today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJosh, we started off by talking about the area in the culture today where tolerance is being required of us. That\u2019s around gender roles, and around marriage, and around LGBT rights, and how we\u2019re going to deal with that. If you\u2019re raising a son or a daughter in this culture, you are facing a <em>huge<\/em> issue. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you teach your kids to be intolerant of this without being labeled as hateful?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You need to start with your own children. By the time those issues come up, I pray to God you\u2019ve already established what is right \/ what is wrong; \u201cWhy is it right?\u201d \/ \u201cWhy is it wrong?\u201d; \u201cWhat is marriage? Who created marriage?\u2014Why marriage?\u201d\u00a0 And then, when it comes up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Josh, let me just stop you there\u2014because you mentioned it on an earlier broadcast\u2014and the basis of our beliefs is because God exists, and He is the One who has declared what is true \/ what the standard is, and He is the God of all truth. That\u2019s <em>why<\/em> we believe what we believe. It\u2019s based upon God and who He is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>This is why I also said there: \u201cYou need to teach your children the very character of God because right from wrong stems from the <em>character<\/em>. Lying is wrong because God is truth. Impurity is wrong because God is pure. Injustice is wrong because God is just. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cRighteousness is right because God is righteous.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not because of you, me, the culture, the law, or anything else. Just because something is legal doesn\u2019t make it right\u2014it just makes it legal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI taught my kids: \u201cThe character of God is your basis for it.\u201d\u00a0 Now, when it comes to this, I pray to God you already have a context out of which to deal with these cultural issues. If not, start building right there. But here\u2019s where you have to be careful. You need to show that loving attitude\u2014loving the individual but not accepting their beliefs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know one way I did that?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if anyone else ever did this. We lived up in Julian, California. And when we moved to Texas, we still did it. We would vacation or spend time in Laguna Beach, and there is an area of Laguna Beach that\u2019s quite highly inhabited by the homosexual lifestyle \/ lesbian lifestyle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would stay in a hotel right in the center of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe always had breakfast in this corner caf\u00e9, which was totally transgender\u2014everything else. We always went there with our kids. We got to know them. We\u2019d walk in, and Jade\u2014we didn\u2019t even have to order. He knew what to order for the whole family\u2014everything else. I wanted my children to be comfortable around gays \/ others. I wanted them to know, and understand, and love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember this one fellow, Jade\u2014he became\u2014he, now, died of AIDS. I miss him. Yesterday, I was thinking of him\u2014I <em>really<\/em> miss <em>Jade<\/em>. He was a dear friend\u2014he didn\u2019t come to Christ, but he was a true friend. He knew where I stood, and I knew where he stood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne time, I said to Jade\u2014I said, \u201cJade, do you have a few moments now?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cSit down here.\u201d\u00a0 I had two of my daughters and my son there. I said, \u201cWill you tell my children, \u2018What is it like being gay in America?\u00a0 What are some of your fears and everything?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 My kids were just\u2014eyes wide open. And listen\u2014why did I do that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted them to see that gays are people. They\u2019re created in the image of God with infinite value, dignity, and worth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cGod\u2014Jesus died as much for a gay as He did for <em>you,<\/em> kids, and we need to love the gays.\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean\u2014Jade knows I don\u2019t accept his lifestyle, but he listens to me. Why?\u00a0 Because Jade always knew Dottie and I <em>loved<\/em> him. All the cooks \/ everyone in the restaurant knew we cared. We remembered them by name. I\u2019d come back from Ireland. I\u2019d bring back some of those Irish cookies or something else, and I\u2019d give them out to everybody there. But they all knew where I stood\u2014I didn\u2019t compromise that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But let me tell you\u2014the whole ground work\u2014they knew I cared, and I loved them. I didn\u2019t judge them as individuals \/ I judged their lifestyle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Josh, there\u2019s probably a listener, right now, who may have stumbled onto our broadcast. They are kind of listening and they\u2019re going, \u201cYou\u2019re talking about God in a very personal way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know this because I know you well. Your life was <em>invaded<\/em> by the person of Jesus Christ when you were a young man, and He changed your life. And in many regards, God\u2019s intolerance of your sin\u2014of you being a lawbreaker \/ of you going against God and His ways\u2014God\u2019s intolerance resulted in your salvation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you share how that occurred; and how a person, who is listening today, who doesn\u2019t know Jesus Christ, might be able to experience the love of God?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know how I could explain it any better than what you just did, Dennis. But I was a non-believer\u2014very\u2014I was mad at God. I was hurt. I was bitter because, from six to thirteen years of age\u2014for seven years \/ every single week for seven years\u2014I was homosexually raped. I was forced for eight years to look at homosexual pornography\u2014not hetero\u2014homosexual pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was mad at my dad \/ my mom for not stopping it. I was mad at God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd what happened was\u2014I met these students and professors at Kellogg College\u2014their lives were different. They seemed to genuinely love each other, and they loved people outside the group. I said, \u201cWhat made you different?\u201d\u00a0 And this young lady looked at me and said, \u201cJesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cOh, for God\u2019s sake!\u00a0 Don\u2019t give me that garbage.\u201d\u00a0 So, they challenged me to intellectually examine. That\u2019s why I did it\u2014to refute them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I found was this\u2014that my life is not compatible with the holy, just, righteous nature of God\u2014that\u2019s called sin. There was nothing I could do about it. God is so righteous \/ so just; but what I learned was that God loved me, Josh McDowell, so much that, if I\u2019d been the only\u2014I still get chills when I think of this\u2014the only person in the world, He still would have sent His Son to die on the cross for my sins. He died for what the world would call an act of intolerance because He said: \u201cIt is sin. It is wrong,\u201d and that goes against tolerance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut He was willing to pay the price for it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when I realized that, the God who created the universe wants me, Josh McDowell, to spend eternity with Him\u2014it broke down my barriers. Already, intellectually, I had come to the conclusion that God is and Christ is the Son of God and was raised from the dead; but what brought me to Christ was the love of God\u2014it totally changed my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But this is one of the things in my life\u2014relates back to going to Laguna Beach and the homosexual community. I was bitter. I was hurt by a homosexual, and I just couldn\u2019t <em>stand<\/em> homosexuals. I said\u2014and when I became a Christian, I thought, \u201cYou know, God has commanded me to love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut one of the biggest things to not loving someone is ignorance. So, I said, \u201cI have got to get to know, in a real way, some gay men and some lesbian women.\u201d\u00a0 So, we would go to Laguna Beach, and I\u2019d meet real gay men. And I really found out: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I <em>like<\/em> some of these folks.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt started to deal with my ignorance, and I was set free to love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I would say a major part of my healing was getting to know gays and coming to love them\u2014not agreeing with them\u2014coming to love them, spending time with them, listening to their journey, their heart, their fears. And whenever I did that, they would always listen to my journey \/ my fears. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when there is a lack of knowledge, there is fear\u2014and understanding, when you read this book, you won\u2019t fear tolerance\u2014you\u2019ll come to understand tolerance. As a result, you\u2019ll be able more to demonstrate a positive, loving attitude when you disagree with someone and in training your own children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The book Josh is talking about is the book he has written with his son, Sean, called <em>The Beauty of Intolerance: Setting a Generation Free to Know Truth and Love<\/em>.
