When you <em>love<\/em> someone, you attribute value to their life in the image of God\u2014value, dignity, worth. I remember awhile back when Max Lucado was here. We were talking about the number of books he\u2019s sold over the years. I think I said something to him like: \u201cIs it up over 50 million books?\u201d [Laughter] You know, it\u2019s near 100 million books that he\u2019s sold.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was way low\u2014I felt embarrassed afterwards. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was trying to think: \u201cI wonder how many books Josh McDowell\u2019s has written?\u201d You know, you\u2019d have to think\u2014because I\u2019ve seen a <em>lot<\/em> of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Eighty million. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But I\u2019m just telling you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So how did Josh pronounce <em>More Than a Carpenter<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I heard you talk about <em>Morin, a Carpenter<\/em> for years! <em>Morin, a Carpenter.<\/em> I\u2019d say, \u201cWho\u2019s Morin?\u2014<em>Morin, a Carpenter. <\/em>I don\u2019t know who Morin is.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that book\u2019s been translated into how many languages?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>From now on, I\u2019ll speak slowly so you\u2019ll get it, Bob. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s been translated into more than 100 languages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>First Christian book in over 70 languages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And now, how many in print?\u201430 million?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>It\u2019s a little over 30 million, I think, now; it was 29 million a year ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>We\u2019re very grateful. It took 44 hours to write it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, wow; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know you\u2019re just rubbing it in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>No. Dottie and I were in Chicago. I said, Dennis: \u201cI\u2019m not going to bed. I\u2019ll sit up to write a book,\u201d\u2014started writing. Forty-four hours later, I sent it off to Tyndale. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How come you can\u2019t write books like that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Because I\u2019m not Josh McDowell. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>He can do radio broadcasts like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He does do that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Josh and Dottie are cohorts of Barbara and I, as staff members of Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Josh, we\u2019ve [Dennis and Barbara] served with Cru now for going on our 46<sup>th<\/sup> year\u2014you\u2019ve been on for 55?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>When the four of us joined Cru, the Dead Sea was only sick<strong>. <\/strong>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, he has written a book\u2014let\u2019s step away from this nonsense\u2014and let\u2019s talk about your new book, Josh. You co-authored this with your son, Sean. The way I want you to share the title of this book is to tell them about a T-shirt that you created, Josh. I really love this, and you didn\u2019t bring me one\u2014so I\u2019m bitter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>But I\u2019m going to send you one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I created a T-shirt to be edgy and get a truth across. On the front, it says, \u201cIntolerance is a beautiful idea.\u201d I would be in restaurants\u2014I was in a Chick-Fil-A<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and this guy yells across\u2014the place is packed\u2014and he says [loud\/gruff voice], \u201cWhat is on the back of that T-shirt?!\u201d So I turned around and you could feel the whole crowd change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the back, it says: \u201cIsn\u2019t it wonderful that Nelson Mandela was intolerant of apartheid; Martin Luther King, Jr., intolerant of racism; Mother Teresa intolerant of poverty; Bono was intolerant of AIDS\u2026\u201d etc., etc. Then the guy yells out, \u201cHow can I get one of those T-shirts?\u201d [Laughter] That became the title for the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You believe this is really one of the most important subjects that individuals, first of all, understand what\u2019s taking in our culture\u2014but especially moms and dads as they raise the next generation\u2014because we\u2019re training our children about how to think and how to have convictions about a bunch of moral issues in our culture today, Josh; and they aren\u2019t handling it well. The next generation, I think, is wilting under the\u2014under the pressure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I think\u2014when it comes to thought, we\u2019ve had probably one of the biggest generational shifts; and it is called tolerance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe concept of tolerance has completely, totally changed from the time of the parents to the time of young people today. This is why, when I teach that tolerance is one of the greatest evils taught in the world today, many Christians, even, get upset with me: \u201cWell, how can you say this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cBecause you don\u2019t understand tolerance. It has totally changed. You see\u2014with mom and dad \/ with the older generation, younger than you and me\u2014when mom and dad\u2014tolerance to them is to accept an individual and disagree with their concepts: \u201cI love you as a person, but I do not agree with what you say,\u201d \u2014you\u2019re being tolerant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell that is \u201csin\u201d today\u2014tolerance today\u2014because it\u2019s going through what\u2019s called an epistemological shift\u2014today, it means that all values, all beliefs, all lifestyles, all claims to truth are <em>equal<\/em>. If you dare to say there\u2019s a value, a belief, a claim to truth, a lifestyle better or lesser than another, by definition today\u2014and I document this in the book\u2014by definition today you are a bigot and intolerant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe problem is\u2014parents and others are reacting to their kids \/ responding to their children, under their concept of tolerance, when their child has a totally different concept of tolerance. You\u2019re not communicating. I wrote this book to try to help parents\u2014moms and dads\u2014to understand their children when it comes to morality, and beliefs, and values, and to communicate with them in language they will understand and not confusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re saying there are all kinds of things in this culture we would <em>all<\/em> agree should not be tolerated\u2014domestic violence should not be tolerated \/ sexual abuse of children should not be tolerated\u2014we can come up with a list of things that everybody would say, \u201cWe should not tolerate that.\u201d We have to think differently about what we mean by <em>tolerate<\/em>; don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>There are people who would not agree with you, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Who would say we need to tolerate domestic violence?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Absolutely\u2014oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you take a hard-core person, committed to tolerance\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In order to be consistent, they would have to allow that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. They would have to allow that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith my son\u2014this was a number of years ago\u2014I said, \u201cSean,\u201d\u2014I picked him up at school\u2014\u201cis there anything they teach you in high school, here in Julian, California, that\u2019s an absolute\u2014 it\u2019s true for everyone and every place at all times?\u201d He said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d He said, \u201cTolerance.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cSon, let me ask you this\u2014do they teach you to be tolerant of the tolerant and give you permission to be intolerant of the intolerant?\u201d He said, \u201cYes, dad.\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s the problem\u2014total inconsistency.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You begin your book with a great illustration of this\u2014of how parents faced a daughter by the name of Renee and her boyfriend, Tony, who wanted to come home and spend some time together at the house with the parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain the scenario and how all this ends up playing out\u2014at conflict with the parents\u2019 values, who <em>weren\u2019t<\/em> tolerant of what was taking place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>So, we open the book with the story of Renee wanting to bring home her boyfriend. Her parents are a little hesitant: \u201cWell, we don\u2019t have room.\u201d \u201cWell, he can stay in <em>my<\/em> room,\u201d etc. Then the parents kind of come unglued: \u201cAbsolutely not!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see what happened\u2014you have two different complete worldviews between the parents and the child \/ how they perceive reality. To the parents that is wrong because God is\u2014His very nature dictates truth\u2014and that\u2019s impurity against the Scriptures. To the daughter\u2014she\u2019s been totally ingrained with tolerance, and her parents never talked about it. Her folks were intolerant by saying, \u201cNo,\u201d because they did not respect <em>her<\/em> opinion because, to her, truth is what she decides is truth \/ to her parents what the Bible decides is truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey weren\u2019t communicating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why, if we don\u2019t get parents dialoguing with their children\u2014I mean young \/ at five, six, seven years old\u2014\u201cWhat is truth?\u201d\u2014going back and forth\u2014you\u2019re going to have tremendous conflict in today\u2019s culture because your children are coming at it from a <em>totally<\/em> different perspective\u2014even if they go to Christian schools\u2014than you do, as the parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they\u2019re going to be surrounded by other kids who have bought into this worldview\u2014that everybody can do what\u2019s right in their own eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not just surrounded\u2014they\u2019re going to be rewarded and punished, as they grow up, if they hold to a standard of absolute truth. Their peer group is going to say, \u201cWell then, you\u2019re not one of us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>We can take all this down to a phrase. People say, \u201cWell Josh, I think you\u2019re making a mountain out of an ant-hill,\u201d and everything else. I say, \u201cOkay: in all the countries in the world\u2014among young people 24, 25, even 30 years old and younger\u2014what is the biggest phrase?\u2014it\u2019s this: \u201cWell, it might be true for you, but it\u2019s not true for me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents weren\u2019t raised in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So if your child came home and made that statement: \u201cDad\u2014man, all my friends\u2014I mean, everybody\u2019s believing what they want to believe. It\u2019s all good. I want to be viewed as somebody who\u2019s tolerant of people who aren\u2019t like me \/ people who embrace other values. You and mom are just negative\u2014you have too narrow a view of life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I would sit down\u2014and I\u2019ve done this with my kids over the years\u2014 \u201cWell, let me ask you, honey: \u2018Do you believe it is wrong\u2014child sex trafficking?\u2019\u201d \u201cOh, yes!\u201d \u201cWell, how can you judge me if I think it is right? I think it helps a child to adjust to sexuality, helps them to grow up, to be comfortable with their body; it helps an older person to release the sexual tension and everything.\u201d \u201cBut Mom, it\u2019s wrong!\u201d \u201cWell, how can you say that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then I\u2019d say, \u201cYou know, kids, there are truths that are true. Whether you believe them or not, it is beyond us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAs a believer, it\u2019s the person, character, and nature of God as described in the Scripture.\u201d They immediately say, \u201cWell, how do you know that\u2019s true?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI need to raise my children\u2014to not just believe that the Bible is the Word of God, and what God says, and everything\u2014but \u201cHow do you know it\u2019s true? How do you know it\u2019s true?\u201d If we do not do that, then you really don\u2019t have much of a way to counteract intolerance in culture today because you\u2019ve lost all objective reality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why, in raising my children\u2014oh, I get criticism for this \/ I don\u2019t even know how you stand with it, Dennis\u2014I tried almost <em>never<\/em> to answer my children\u2019s questions because, if I answered my children\u2019s questions, they were Dad\u2019s answer \/ not their answers. I always came back with another question\u2014I always would interact with my kids, where <em>they<\/em> came to the answer. When it was over, they had convictions\u2014it was <em>their<\/em> answer \/ not Daddy\u2019s answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are a lot of parents listening to us right now and saying: \u201cWell, I didn\u2019t grow up in a home like that. It\u2019s not my natural way of thinking.\u201d\u00a0 Josh\u2014neither did you; you didn\u2019t grow up in a home like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cSo what\u2019s the big deal?\u201d \u201cThis is what the big deal is\u2026\u201d I hear that all the time. The reason is this\u2014when you were growing up\u2014whatever your pastor taught, whatever your parents taught you, when you turned on the TV\u2014to various degrees\u2014the structures around you reinforced it. When you went to school \/ when you went to classrooms, what your pastor taught, and you taught, as a parent, was reinforced. That is no longer true!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight <em>now<\/em>, this Sunday morning, whatever your pastor teaches \/ whatever you teach your kids\u2014the moment they turn on TV, they go to their internet, they go to the Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, they walk out in town \/ walking down the street\u2014almost every structure in culture flies in the face. This is why I say: \u201cMom and dad, you were able to survive with a belief system and survive\u2014not only thrive\u2014but thrive in a <em>great<\/em> way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYour kids <em>won\u2019t<\/em> without convictions.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you raise your children the way your parents raised you, you\u2019ll probably lose them. Why?\u2014because your parents, who did a great job for that culture at that time, raised you with a very good belief system. That won\u2019t work anymore. You must now raise your children with <em>convictions<\/em>. Conviction is knowing what you believe \/ why you believe\u2014now this is important\u2014and experiencing it in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, today, in dealing with tolerance, most people say, \u201cWell, if it\u2019s true, it will really work.\u201d Kids say, \u201cIf it really works, it is true.\u201d Seventy-eight percent of evangelical Christian young people, ask the question: \u201cHow do you know something is true?\u201d\u2014not because Jesus said it in the Bible\u2014no: \u201cIf it works.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the problem with that\u2014say a pastor \/ somebody makes a decision to enter into sexual immorality\u2014pornography or whatever. The average adult in the church would say, \u201cWell, the pastor is not living the truth.\u201d Why? \u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause to him: \u201cIf it\u2019s true, it will work.\u201d It\u2019s not working: \u201cIs it a problem of truth?\u201d \u201cNo! You\u2019re not living it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut this is the problem in the Christian home\u2014the child will look at that and say, \u201cNot true.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s not true?\u201d \u201cWhatever the pastor teaches.\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why hypocrisy today\u2014used to question the hypocrite \/ now, it questions truth because, if a dad is a hypocrite in a home today\u2014he does one thing at church on Sunday and not\u00a0 the rest of the time at home\u2014the kid will look at the father and he processes, \u201cIt\u2019s not true.\u201d \u201cWhat?\u201d \u201cWhatever my dad believes.\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why hypocrisy today has <em>ten<\/em> <em>times<\/em> the impact it used to have because, now, it reflects on <em>truth<\/em> itself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You made an observation earlier when we were talking about this that I think would be good for our listeners to hear. You were saying most people do not move away from the anchor of the biblical faith because they are persuaded, intellectually, away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said most of them rearrange their intellect because they\u2019re persuaded, morally, in a different direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I learned that over\u2014I don\u2019t know how many years\u20141,260 universities I\u2019ve lectured at\u2014almost every time I ever met a professor \/ a grad student, even, who\u2019s <em>adamant<\/em> against Christianity\u2014just attack Christians \/ would ridicule me when I\u2019d come to the campus. I can say, almost 100 percent of the time, when I was able to spend time with that person, they did not have an intellectual question; they had a moral problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>They had a <em>moral<\/em> problem with it. Now, here\u2019s the key: \u201cBut Josh, what do you do? What do we teach our children?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI refuse to ever teach my children to be tolerant because I believe you diminish the value of a person. I raised my children to be loving. When you <em>love<\/em> someone, you attribute <em>value<\/em> to their life in the image of God\u2014value, dignity, worth. When you <em>tolerate<\/em> someone, you diminish them because you\u2019re saying: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what you believe. Everything is true.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you <em>love<\/em> someone, you <em>acknowledge<\/em> who they are as a person. So I raised my children to be loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, it\u2019s interesting\u2014in Psalm 89:14\u2014this ought to be the clamoring bell \/ it says: \u201cUnfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.\u201d I raised my children to be loving and to love truth. This is why, in the New Testament\u2014boy, this is so powerful!\u2014\u201cTeach the truth in love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, all the way through, it is love and truth, love and truth, love and truth. There\u2019s a tremendous connection there. The thing is\u2014the love there \/ \u201cTeach the truth in love,\u201d\u2014the love doesn\u2019t make it true. You could teach truth in hatred and it\u2019s still true, but nobody will want it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>What love does\u2014is fertilize the ground to <em>receive<\/em> the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why we have to be <em>so<\/em> careful of our attitudes with our <em>own<\/em> children\u2014everything\u2014and show <em>compassion<\/em> for the individual. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the woman who launched Roe v. Wade\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u2014you know, she became a believer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You know why? Because the director of Operation Rescue\u2014who had condemned her for a lot of years, and everything else\u2014criticized her \/ everything\u2014 switched and started to love her as an individual. That brought her to Christ. You see, he was still saying the same truth to her, but he was doing the truth in <em>love<\/em>. She responded to that. This is how we must raise our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s\u2014we have to have a fundamental paradigm shift in how we\u2019re thinking about what\u2019s real and what\u2019s true. It\u2019s really in your book, <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. Let me say that again: <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re coaching us on how to cultivate a new way of thinking about love, and truth, and tolerance, and intolerance. I mean, everything from a child asking his or her parents to dress in a rainbow to celebrate some kid, who has come out at school\u2014who\u2019s declared he\u2019s gay\u2014that\u2019s going to force the parent to make a decision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you do this thing called \u201clife\u201d in this culture? Love people compassionately, show your concern for them, but respect the truth of God\u2019s Word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cRender unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar; render unto God what belongs to God.\u201d Your taxes \/ everything else\u2014you render unto Caesar. When it comes to your morality, you render it unto God. When they were in prison in Acts and they said, \u201cWe forbid you to speak out in God\u2019s name\u2014to be silent!\u201d they said, \u201cWe must obey God rather than men,\u201d and they paid a price for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to raise our children with that stamina\u2014to render unto Caesar \/ I have a whole chapter on it\u2014and render unto God what is God\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, when you would talk about the book,\u2014it\u2019s worth calling \/ getting that book for just one chapter on \u201cWhat we teach our children?\u201d I call it the four \u201cCs\u201d\u2014I developed this when I did the Right from Wrong campaign. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou train your children the four \u201cCs\u201d in any situation\u2014one, \u201cConsider the choice: \u2018What is the choice here?\u2019\u201d Second: \u201cCompare it to God \/ His very nature.\u201d Third: \u201cCommit to God\u2019s way.\u201d Fourth: \u201cCount on God\u2019s blessing for doing the right thing.\u201d The four \u201cCs\u201d\u2014I raised my children: consider, compare, commit, and count.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I feel like we\u2019ve been in a locker room, Bob. When you <em>love<\/em> someone, you attribute value to their life in the image of God\u2014value, dignity, worth. I remember awhile back when Max Lucado was here. We were talking about the number of books he\u2019s sold over the years. I think I said something to him like: \u201cIs it up over 50 million books?\u201d [Laughter] You know, it\u2019s near 100 million books that he\u2019s sold.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was way low\u2014I felt embarrassed afterwards. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was trying to think: \u201cI wonder how many books Josh McDowell\u2019s has written?\u201d You know, you\u2019d have to think\u2014because I\u2019ve seen a <em>lot<\/em> of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Eighty million. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think that might be a little high, Josh. [Laughter] Josh is here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s been translated into more than 100 languages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>First Christian book in over 70 languages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And now, how many in print?\u201430 million?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>It\u2019s a little over 30 million, I think, now; it was 29 million a year ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>We\u2019re very grateful. It took 44 hours to write it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, wow; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I know you\u2019re just rubbing it in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>No. Dottie and I were in Chicago. I said, Dennis: \u201cI\u2019m not going to bed. I\u2019ll sit up to write a book,\u201d\u2014started writing. Forty-four hours later, I sent it off to Tyndale. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How come you can\u2019t write books like that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Because I\u2019m not Josh McDowell. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>He can do radio broadcasts like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>He does do that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Josh and Dottie are cohorts of Barbara and I, as staff members of Cru<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. Josh, we\u2019ve [Dennis and Barbara] served with Cru now for going on our 46<sup>th<\/sup> year\u2014you\u2019ve been on for 55?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>When the four of us joined Cru, the Dead Sea was only sick<strong>. <\/strong>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, he has written a book\u2014let\u2019s step away from this nonsense\u2014and let\u2019s talk about your new book, Josh. You co-authored this with your son, Sean. The way I want you to share the title of this book is to tell them about a T-shirt that you created, Josh. I really love this, and you didn\u2019t bring me one\u2014so I\u2019m bitter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>But I\u2019m going to send you one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I created a T-shirt to be edgy and get a truth across. On the front, it says, \u201cIntolerance is a beautiful idea.\u201d I would be in restaurants\u2014I was in a Chick-Fil-A<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and this guy yells across\u2014the place is packed\u2014and he says [loud\/gruff voice], \u201cWhat is on the back of that T-shirt?!\u201d So I turned around and you could feel the whole crowd change. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the back, it says: \u201cIsn\u2019t it wonderful that Nelson Mandela was intolerant of apartheid; Martin Luther King, Jr., intolerant of racism; Mother Teresa intolerant of poverty; Bono was intolerant of AIDS\u2026\u201d etc., etc. Then the guy yells out, \u201cHow can I get one of those T-shirts?\u201d [Laughter] That became the title for the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You believe this is really one of the most important subjects that individuals, first of all, understand what\u2019s taking in our culture\u2014but especially moms and dads as they raise the next generation\u2014because we\u2019re training our children about how to think and how to have convictions about a bunch of moral issues in our culture today, Josh; and they aren\u2019t handling it well. The next generation, I think, is wilting under the\u2014under the pressure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I think\u2014when it comes to thought, we\u2019ve had probably one of the biggest generational shifts; and it is called tolerance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe concept of tolerance has completely, totally changed from the time of the parents to the time of young people today. This is why, when I teach that tolerance is one of the greatest evils taught in the world today, many Christians, even, get upset with me: \u201cWell, how can you say this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cBecause you don\u2019t understand tolerance. It has totally changed. You see\u2014with mom and dad \/ with the older generation, younger than you and me\u2014when mom and dad\u2014tolerance to them is to accept an individual and disagree with their concepts: \u201cI love you as a person, but I do not agree with what you say,\u201d \u2014you\u2019re being tolerant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell that is \u201csin\u201d today\u2014tolerance today\u2014because it\u2019s going through what\u2019s called an epistemological shift\u2014today, it means that all values, all beliefs, all lifestyles, all claims to truth are <em>equal<\/em>. If you dare to say there\u2019s a value, a belief, a claim to truth, a lifestyle better or lesser than another, by definition today\u2014and I document this in the book\u2014by definition today you are a bigot and intolerant.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe problem is\u2014parents and others are reacting to their kids \/ responding to their children, under their concept of tolerance, when their child has a totally different concept of tolerance. You\u2019re not communicating. I wrote this book to try to help parents\u2014moms and dads\u2014to understand their children when it comes to morality, and beliefs, and values, and to communicate with them in language they will understand and not confusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So you\u2019re saying there are all kinds of things in this culture we would <em>all<\/em> agree should not be tolerated\u2014domestic violence should not be tolerated \/ sexual abuse of children should not be tolerated\u2014we can come up with a list of things that everybody would say, \u201cWe should not tolerate that.\u201d We have to think differently about what we mean by <em>tolerate<\/em>; don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>There are people who would not agree with you, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Who would say we need to tolerate domestic violence?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Absolutely\u2014oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you take a hard-core person, committed to tolerance\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In order to be consistent, they would have to allow that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That\u2019s right. They would have to allow that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith my son\u2014this was a number of years ago\u2014I said, \u201cSean,\u201d\u2014I picked him up at school\u2014\u201cis there anything they teach you in high school, here in Julian, California, that\u2019s an absolute\u2014 it\u2019s true for everyone and every place at all times?\u201d He said, \u201cYes.\u201d I said, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d He said, \u201cTolerance.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cSon, let me ask you this\u2014do they teach you to be tolerant of the tolerant and give you permission to be intolerant of the intolerant?\u201d He said, \u201cYes, dad.\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s the problem\u2014total inconsistency.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You begin your book with a great illustration of this\u2014of how parents faced a daughter by the name of Renee and her boyfriend, Tony, who wanted to come home and spend some time together at the house with the parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExplain the scenario and how all this ends up playing out\u2014at conflict with the parents\u2019 values, who <em>weren\u2019t<\/em> tolerant of what was taking place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>So, we open the book with the story of Renee wanting to bring home her boyfriend. Her parents are a little hesitant: \u201cWell, we don\u2019t have room.\u201d \u201cWell, he can stay in <em>my<\/em> room,\u201d etc. Then the parents kind of come unglued: \u201cAbsolutely not!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see what happened\u2014you have two different complete worldviews between the parents and the child \/ how they perceive reality. To the parents that is wrong because God is\u2014His very nature dictates truth\u2014and that\u2019s impurity against the Scriptures. To the daughter\u2014she\u2019s been totally ingrained with tolerance, and her parents never talked about it. Her folks were intolerant by saying, \u201cNo,\u201d because they did not respect <em>her<\/em> opinion because, to her, truth is what she decides is truth \/ to her parents what the Bible decides is truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey weren\u2019t communicating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why, if we don\u2019t get parents dialoguing with their children\u2014I mean young \/ at five, six, seven years old\u2014\u201cWhat is truth?\u201d\u2014going back and forth\u2014you\u2019re going to have tremendous conflict in today\u2019s culture because your children are coming at it from a <em>totally<\/em> different perspective\u2014even if they go to Christian schools\u2014than you do, as the parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they\u2019re going to be surrounded by other kids who have bought into this worldview\u2014that everybody can do what\u2019s right in their own eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not just surrounded\u2014they\u2019re going to be rewarded and punished, as they grow up, if they hold to a standard of absolute truth. Their peer group is going to say, \u201cWell then, you\u2019re not one of us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>We can take all this down to a phrase. People say, \u201cWell Josh, I think you\u2019re making a mountain out of an ant-hill,\u201d and everything else. I say, \u201cOkay: in all the countries in the world\u2014among young people 24, 25, even 30 years old and younger\u2014what is the biggest phrase?\u2014it\u2019s this: \u201cWell, it might be true for you, but it\u2019s not true for me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParents weren\u2019t raised in that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So if your child came home and made that statement: \u201cDad\u2014man, all my friends\u2014I mean, everybody\u2019s believing what they want to believe. It\u2019s all good. I want to be viewed as somebody who\u2019s tolerant of people who aren\u2019t like me \/ people who embrace other values. You and mom are just negative\u2014you have too narrow a view of life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I would sit down\u2014and I\u2019ve done this with my kids over the years\u2014 \u201cWell, let me ask you, honey: \u2018Do you believe it is wrong\u2014child sex trafficking?\u2019\u201d \u201cOh, yes!\u201d \u201cWell, how can you judge me if I think it is right? I think it helps a child to adjust to sexuality, helps them to grow up, to be comfortable with their body; it helps an older person to release the sexual tension and everything.\u201d \u201cBut Mom, it\u2019s wrong!\u201d \u201cWell, how can you say that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then I\u2019d say, \u201cYou know, kids, there are truths that are true. Whether you believe them or not, it is beyond us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAs a believer, it\u2019s the person, character, and nature of God as described in the Scripture.\u201d They immediately say, \u201cWell, how do you know that\u2019s true?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI need to raise my children\u2014to not just believe that the Bible is the Word of God, and what God says, and everything\u2014but \u201cHow do you know it\u2019s true? How do you know it\u2019s true?\u201d If we do not do that, then you really don\u2019t have much of a way to counteract intolerance in culture today because you\u2019ve lost all objective reality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why, in raising my children\u2014oh, I get criticism for this \/ I don\u2019t even know how you stand with it, Dennis\u2014I tried almost <em>never<\/em> to answer my children\u2019s questions because, if I answered my children\u2019s questions, they were Dad\u2019s answer \/ not their answers. I always came back with another question\u2014I always would interact with my kids, where <em>they<\/em> came to the answer. When it was over, they had convictions\u2014it was <em>their<\/em> answer \/ not Daddy\u2019s answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There are a lot of parents listening to us right now and saying: \u201cWell, I didn\u2019t grow up in a home like that. It\u2019s not my natural way of thinking.\u201d\u00a0 Josh\u2014neither did you; you didn\u2019t grow up in a home like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cSo what\u2019s the big deal?\u201d \u201cThis is what the big deal is\u2026\u201d I hear that all the time. The reason is this\u2014when you were growing up\u2014whatever your pastor taught, whatever your parents taught you, when you turned on the TV\u2014to various degrees\u2014the structures around you reinforced it. When you went to school \/ when you went to classrooms, what your pastor taught, and you taught, as a parent, was reinforced. That is no longer true!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight <em>now<\/em>, this Sunday morning, whatever your pastor teaches \/ whatever you teach your kids\u2014the moment they turn on TV, they go to their internet, they go to the Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, they walk out in town \/ walking down the street\u2014almost every structure in culture flies in the face. This is why I say: \u201cMom and dad, you were able to survive with a belief system and survive\u2014not only thrive\u2014but thrive in a <em>great<\/em> way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYour kids <em>won\u2019t<\/em> without convictions.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you raise your children the way your parents raised you, you\u2019ll probably lose them. Why?\u2014because your parents, who did a great job for that culture at that time, raised you with a very good belief system. That won\u2019t work anymore. You must now raise your children with <em>convictions<\/em>. Conviction is knowing what you believe \/ why you believe\u2014now this is important\u2014and experiencing it in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, today, in dealing with tolerance, most people say, \u201cWell, if it\u2019s true, it will really work.\u201d Kids say, \u201cIf it really works, it is true.\u201d Seventy-eight percent of evangelical Christian young people, ask the question: \u201cHow do you know something is true?\u201d\u2014not because Jesus said it in the Bible\u2014no: \u201cIf it works.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the problem with that\u2014say a pastor \/ somebody makes a decision to enter into sexual immorality\u2014pornography or whatever. The average adult in the church would say, \u201cWell, the pastor is not living the truth.\u201d Why? \u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause to him: \u201cIf it\u2019s true, it will work.\u201d It\u2019s not working: \u201cIs it a problem of truth?\u201d \u201cNo! You\u2019re not living it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut this is the problem in the Christian home\u2014the child will look at that and say, \u201cNot true.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s not true?\u201d \u201cWhatever the pastor teaches.\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why hypocrisy today\u2014used to question the hypocrite \/ now, it questions truth because, if a dad is a hypocrite in a home today\u2014he does one thing at church on Sunday and not\u00a0 the rest of the time at home\u2014the kid will look at the father and he processes, \u201cIt\u2019s not true.\u201d \u201cWhat?\u201d \u201cWhatever my dad believes.\u201d \u201cWhy?\u201d \u201cIt doesn\u2019t work!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why hypocrisy today has <em>ten<\/em> <em>times<\/em> the impact it used to have because, now, it reflects on <em>truth<\/em> itself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You made an observation earlier when we were talking about this that I think would be good for our listeners to hear. You were saying most people do not move away from the anchor of the biblical faith because they are persuaded, intellectually, away. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou said most of them rearrange their intellect because they\u2019re persuaded, morally, in a different direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>I learned that over\u2014I don\u2019t know how many years\u20141,260 universities I\u2019ve lectured at\u2014almost every time I ever met a professor \/ a grad student, even, who\u2019s <em>adamant<\/em> against Christianity\u2014just attack Christians \/ would ridicule me when I\u2019d come to the campus. I can say, almost 100 percent of the time, when I was able to spend time with that person, they did not have an intellectual question; they had a moral problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>They had a <em>moral<\/em> problem with it. Now, here\u2019s the key: \u201cBut Josh, what do you do? What do we teach our children?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI refuse to ever teach my children to be tolerant because I believe you diminish the value of a person. I raised my children to be loving. When you <em>love<\/em> someone, you attribute <em>value<\/em> to their life in the image of God\u2014value, dignity, worth. When you <em>tolerate<\/em> someone, you diminish them because you\u2019re saying: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what you believe. Everything is true.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you <em>love<\/em> someone, you <em>acknowledge<\/em> who they are as a person. So I raised my children to be loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, it\u2019s interesting\u2014in Psalm 89:14\u2014this ought to be the clamoring bell \/ it says: \u201cUnfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.\u201d I raised my children to be loving and to love truth. This is why, in the New Testament\u2014boy, this is so powerful!\u2014\u201cTeach the truth in love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, all the way through, it is love and truth, love and truth, love and truth. There\u2019s a tremendous connection there. The thing is\u2014the love there \/ \u201cTeach the truth in love,\u201d\u2014the love doesn\u2019t make it true. You could teach truth in hatred and it\u2019s still true, but nobody will want it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>What love does\u2014is fertilize the ground to <em>receive<\/em> the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is why we have to be <em>so<\/em> careful of our attitudes with our <em>own<\/em> children\u2014everything\u2014and show <em>compassion<\/em> for the individual. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, the woman who launched Roe v. Wade\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u2014you know, she became a believer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>You know why? Because the director of Operation Rescue\u2014who had condemned her for a lot of years, and everything else\u2014criticized her \/ everything\u2014 switched and started to love her as an individual. That brought her to Christ. You see, he was still saying the same truth to her, but he was doing the truth in <em>love<\/em>. She responded to that. This is how we must raise our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s\u2014we have to have a fundamental paradigm shift in how we\u2019re thinking about what\u2019s real and what\u2019s true. It\u2019s really in your book, <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. Let me say that again: <em>The Beauty of Intolerance<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re coaching us on how to cultivate a new way of thinking about love, and truth, and tolerance, and intolerance. I mean, everything from a child asking his or her parents to dress in a rainbow to celebrate some kid, who has come out at school\u2014who\u2019s declared he\u2019s gay\u2014that\u2019s going to force the parent to make a decision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do you do this thing called \u201clife\u201d in this culture? Love people compassionately, show your concern for them, but respect the truth of God\u2019s Word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u201cRender unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar; render unto God what belongs to God.\u201d Your taxes \/ everything else\u2014you render unto Caesar. When it comes to your morality, you render it unto God. When they were in prison in Acts and they said, \u201cWe forbid you to speak out in God\u2019s name\u2014to be silent!\u201d they said, \u201cWe must obey God rather than men,\u201d and they paid a price for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to raise our children with that stamina\u2014to render unto Caesar \/ I have a whole chapter on it\u2014and render unto God what is God\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, when you would talk about the book,\u2014it\u2019s worth calling \/ getting that book for just one chapter on \u201cWhat we teach our children?\u201d I call it the four \u201cCs\u201d\u2014I developed this when I did the Right from Wrong campaign. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou train your children the four \u201cCs\u201d in any situation\u2014one, \u201cConsider the choice: \u2018What is the choice here?\u2019\u201d Second: \u201cCompare it to God \/ His very nature.\u201d Third: \u201cCommit to God\u2019s way.\u201d Fourth: \u201cCount on God\u2019s blessing for doing the right thing.\u201d The four \u201cCs\u201d\u2014I raised my children: consider, compare, commit, and count.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I feel like we\u2019ve been in a locker room, Bob.
