Program follows in four\u2014three\u2014two\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Isaiah 53:6: the prophet Isaiah said, \u201cAll we like sheep have gone astray, each of us to his own way.\u201d If I had one wish that I could wave a magic baton over my own life, my kids, Barbara, and each and every listener today, it would be if we could eradicate selfishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, with our host\u2014bestselling author and conference speaker\u2014Dennis Rainey. I\u2019m Bob Lepine, inviting you to stay with us for a look at <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I remember the first day the broadcast was aired. It was a Monday. We all gathered together in the call center, and it was not a formal call center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a room with seven phones in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was it just seven?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know how many we had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We gathered around those phones and waited for them to ring, and they rang! And they rang again. And they rang all day. At the end of the day, we had received 44 phone calls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>on Thursday, July 28<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere have been thousands of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> programs that have aired since that very first one in November of 1992. We\u2019ll spend some time exploring the history of this radio program today. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. While we are here talking on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, our staff is assembled today. We are spending time celebrating, as a staff, 40 years of ministry. We\u2019ve gotten to the point in history, where what you\u2019re listening to today was first birthed\u2014<em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, which came on the air November 9, 1992. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara, I\u2019m just curious: do you remember when the first conversations about radio were had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh yes; she does. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014around the dinner table?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She hit me on the head with an anchor. [Laughter] It wasn\u2019t applause; it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was full speed ahead?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014it was not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; it was, \u201cWe need to think about this.\u201d I don\u2019t remember exactly when he first mentioned it; but I do remember thinking: \u201cWow! This would be a really big deal \/ this would take a lot more time. It\u2019s not like a conference, where you go speak and then you go back home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Radio is every day\u2014every day, every day, every day\u2014and I also knew that being on radio would put our lives and our family in front of a whole lot more people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have both always been very transparent about your life, your family, your marriage; but it is one thing to be transparent with a group of 400\/500 couples in another city and then fly home. It\u2019s another thing to go on national radio and say, \u201cWe had a fight the other night.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s very different. So, I took a pretty big gulp. I really had to think about it a lot \/ I prayed about it a lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to know for <em>sure<\/em>, before we said, \u201cYes,\u201d to this, that God was in this and this was what God wanted us to do, because if He wanted us to do it, I knew we would be alright; but I wanted to be confident that this was His call for our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis, this was not something that you had any great yearning for. It was really leadership team at FamilyLife that was asking the question, \u201cHow can we have more influence in a culture that is rapidly devolving when it comes to marriage and family?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. We had several thousand volunteers at our conferences, all around the country. Our leadership team said: \u201cYou know, we have a ground force \/ an army on the ground. We need an air force, and we need something that makes a bigger difference in marriages and families and increases our reach.\u201d It wasn\u2019t a conclusion that this would be a success. As you know, Bob, a lot of radio programs have started over the years, and they\u2019re no longer in existence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There were a number of indicators \/ fingerprints-of-God moments\u2014that\u2019s what you\u2019ve always referred to them as\u2014markers that God was saying, \u201cThis is what I have for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first came\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the first was Barbara. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When she said, \u201cOkay\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was. She was okay with doing it because I would not have ventured out if she had not felt and agreed with me, \u201cYes; I think we can do this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a conversation with the people who helped launch <em>Focus on the<\/em> <em>Family<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, <em>Insight for Living<\/em> with Chuck Swindoll, <em>Grace to You<\/em> with John MacArthur, and a number of other well-known Christian radio ministries\u2014our friends at Ambassador Advertising. They were routinely being talked to by people who said, \u201cWe\u2019re interested in starting a radio program.\u201d When you called and said, \u201cWe\u2019re thinking about it,\u201d you didn\u2019t know that they had a lot of people who were calling them. You just knew that, when they said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to explore this with you,\u201d it was something <em>unique<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I didn\u2019t realize, Bob\u2014they\u2019d said, \u201cDennis, do you realize how many Christian leaders have come to us, over the past five years, to start Christian radio broadcast?\u201d I said: \u201cI have no idea\u2014five, six, seven \/ over a five-year period?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cFifty.\u201d They said, \u201cDo you know how many we\u2019ve said, \u2018Yes,\u2019 to?\u201d I said, \u201cNo idea.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Ambassador Advertising was, then and is today, the number one syndicator of Christian broadcast in the country. I had a little audition with Al Sanders, who\u2019s kind of the grandfather of Christian radio. I guess I must have passed his audition because, at the end of the day, they said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to do this.\u201d That was the second answer to prayer, after Barbara. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The next answer to prayer came when a donor \/ a friend of the ministry sat down and wrote what was, at that time, the largest check we had ever received as a donation to this ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll never forget sitting in my office, seated across the room from a couple, who\u2019d flown in from Texas\u2014who have since become very, very dear friends\u2014and not just because they gave financially, but just because of their interest in Barbara\u2019s life, mine, our family. We\u2019ve shared a lot of life together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis couple came in to FamilyLife and said, \u201cWhat do you have that needs to be funded?\u201d We said, \u201cWell, we\u2019d like to do a parenting conference.\u201d They said, \u201cWhat else do you have?\u201d I said: \u201cWell, we\u2019d like to start this radio broadcast in the future. We have a little money saved at the ministry, but don\u2019t have it all.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Christian broadcast like this is like a manufacturing process. It is literally 180 steps from the time a broadcast idea is generated to the time it ends up on air, and we needed that money. We didn\u2019t know how badly we needed it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said: \u201cWell, okay. Thanks,\u201d and flew off. And then I thought, \u201cWell, that was interesting.\u201d They called back the next day and said: \u201cYou can go do your parenting conference. Just don\u2019t tell anybody.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, giving a gift \/ a sizable gift to a ministry like that\u2014I didn\u2019t tell people who gave the gift\u2014but it became apparent in our small ministry, here in Little Rock, that there had been a gift given that enabled us to go do our parenting conference.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And they knew who\u2019d been visiting recently.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they knew who was here. I had to call the couple to say: \u201cHey, folks found out. I\u2019m sorry. I promised you I\u2019d keep it a secret, but we weren\u2019t able to do that.\u201d There was silence on the other end of the phone. I offered to send the money back if it needed to be; and they said, \u201cWell, you know, it was probably unfair to give you a gift of that size and ask you to keep it a secret. Besides, you can go do radio program too.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to say, I wept. Bob, it was another illustration of many times that God has His signature to us, here at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, as it turned out, we had to scramble for our first radio programs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Bob, you\u2019re really leaving out something pretty important here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I was thinking the same thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why don\u2019t you tell him what he\u2019s leaving out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He\u2019s leaving out the other answer to prayer, which would be number four\u2014and that is God supplying Bob Lepine to be the co-host because I remember that Bob was very content\u2014[Laughter]\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is that right?\u2014in your previous dwelling place in San Antonio, Texas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He liked the Mexican food in San Antonio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the Spurs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And the basketball; that\u2019s right\u2014and was not very interested, initially, in coming\u2014but his wife and his mother both thought it would be a very good fit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Part of the confirmation for us that God was in this was we weren\u2019t giving in to fleshly desire. It wasn\u2019t something that we thought: \u201cMan! It would really be fun to leave San Antonio, move to Little Rock, and do this.\u201d There was not a lot in me saying, \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019d like to do.\u201d But there was a clear sense for both of us\u2014that God\u2019s hand seemed to be on this. This seemed to be His direction for our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>As I\u2019ve told friends, it is better to be in the will of God in Nineveh than to be in the belly of the big fish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So we moved to Nineveh, Arkansas, back in 1992. [Laughter] Within a couple of months, we had the opportunity to launch a program, ahead of schedule.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>On the fifth miracle that occurred. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We had an opportunity to go on 22 stations at some great times\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014with the number one owner of Christian radio stations in the country, Salem Broadcasting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They had openings\u2014they called and said, \u201cCan you be ready?\u201d We hadn\u2019t recorded anything, but they needed a program.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t even have a name for it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, in fact, we had a staff meeting, not long ago, as we were celebrating a milestone, here at <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Somebody asked about the name of the program. Emmitt Fowler, who works with us here, was hosting that day. This is kind of interesting how this came up. You know, it\u2019s amazing what you can find if you dig deep enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>And I actually found a list of suggested names of a program from that meeting in Bob\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s amazing what you can find if you fabricate too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>There was a list of names that were given\u2014as I understand it\u2014pretty serious consideration, and yet were rejected. I thought I\u2019d share just a few of those with you. The first that I found was <em>FamilyLife Yesterday<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. We said, \u201cNo,\u201d to that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>I think that was probably a good call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>The Odd Life of Dennis and Bob<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Focus on the American Family Radio<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; no, we\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>That may have caused some confusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. That\u2019s\u2014yes. This next one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Get it out of your system.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>It just says\u2014and this is actually the one on the list that I <em>really<\/em> thought would stick\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>I\u2019m really surprised it didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019m shocked; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Yes. <em>Bob Lepine and That Other Guy<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So there you go\u2014that\u2019s a little of how the program naming\u2014we didn\u2019t sit in front of a whiteboard\u2014we brainstormed names \/ we came up with names\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And none of those names were really viable. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No; no. But <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>stuck. We were on the air four weeks after we had come up with that name, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I wish our listeners could have seen\u2014we did not have the vision for this, Bob, to take a picture of the place where we did the first broadcast. We called it Bethlehem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Actually, I think we do have some pictures\u2014we\u2019ll put them on the website. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This was right across the road from Asher Auto Salvage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a garage that had been converted into a recording studio\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014roughly speaking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and it had burlap and egg crates on the walls. Here\u2019s what I remember\u2014it cost us $30 an hour to record.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they gave us half-price\u2014it was $15.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was $15 an hour\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That included the technician.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We launched in November of 1992 on 22 radio stations. Today, <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is heard on a network of stations that exceeds more than a thousand stations and outlets, all across the country, and has now moved into foreign countries as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I remember the first day the broadcast was aired. It was a Monday. We all gathered together in the call center, and it was not a formal call center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a room with seven phones in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was it just seven?! I didn\u2019t know how many we had, but we gathered around those phones and waited for them to ring. And they rang! And they rang again. And they rang all day. At the end of the day, we had received 44 phone calls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And part of it\u2019s because we offered a resource that we hadn\u2019t created yet. That was not one of our greater moments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe did have some conversation as we were meeting with our staff about the core of the ministry and what we were about when we started. What we\u2019re about today hasn\u2019t changed over the last two-plus decades on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Listen to this clip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recording]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>You talk a lot about the program, from its very foundation, being biblical, practical, and relevant. Why were those three things the foundational building blocks that you chose, and why do they remain key to the program today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, if it\u2019s not biblical, I don\u2019t have anything to say. I mean, it\u2019s not a matter of happy homes\u2014it\u2019s a matter of godly homes and pointing people to Christ. If we don\u2019t talk from the Scripture, then people are building their houses on the sand. I think practical has always been a part of what FamilyLife\u2019s all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to help people apply the Scriptures to their lives. Then relevance is\u2014we\u2019ve always wanted to be market-sensitive; but again, let the Bible speak to where people are, and let them apply it to their own marriages, families, and singles\u2019 lives too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, really, the radio\u2019s just a reflection of what the FamilyLife ministry was before radio started. The <em>Weekend<\/em>s<em> to Remember<\/em> were practical, biblical, relevant, authentic, and transparent. All of those characteristics just transferred through. It\u2019s really a reflection of Dennis\u2019s leadership, and Dennis\u2019s life, and how he\u2019s ministered, and how he\u2019s modeled that for others, who were speakers, and then modeled it on the radio. That\u2019s how he\u2019s done ministry and taught us to do ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Speaking of modeling on the radio\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>\u2014we just happen to have a time when Dennis gave some very\u2014I\u2019m not sure how\u2014I guess it was biblical advice\u2014certainly practical advice and maybe even relevant, depending on your marriage situation\u2014which people will understand when they hear in a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou gave some very wise advice to Lou Priolo when he was here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Program]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if your wife comes to you and says, \u201cDoes this dress make me look fat?\u201d what do you say, Lou?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>\u201cYes, of course.\u201d You say, \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If she says, \u201cDoes this dress make me look fat?\u201d and you\u2019re about to go out somewhere and you just say, \u201cYes, it does.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>Well, you could say\u2014you know, you could say, \u201cSweetheart, it\u2019s not the most flattering dress.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you go! There you go! I was going to say: \u201cLou, far be it from me to correct you, as the counselor, at this point\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I said <em>I<\/em> would say it. [Laughter] I\u2019m a New Yorker. Your wife is from the South, where you all have this polite stuff going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Bless your heart. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>Polite.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, you\u2019ve been talking about biblical counsel. I would give you some biblical counsel in return. I would say, speaking the truth in love\u2014and there is a way to speak the truth\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>Okay; so, teach me. You counsel me: \u201cHow would I tell my wife in this situation?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I would just say to her, \u201cYou know, sweetheart, you have got other dresses that make you look better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I agree; that\u2019s a <em>much<\/em> better way to say it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, it\u2019s\u2014I just wouldn\u2019t say, \u201cYes.\u201d [Laughter] I mean, that would not be good\u2014in the south or in the north! I\u2019m afraid that the cold winds blow wherever that goes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I <em>never<\/em> respond that way. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to call your wife! Good advice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I remember, as we listen back to that\u2014I remember the first time we sat down to record. You were giving an illustration, and you talked about the fact that the previous week you and Barbara had had an argument. I remember thinking to myself: \u201cOkay, we may need to edit that out. I don\u2019t know if you want to go on national radio and talk about the fight you had with your wife a week ago.\u201d I asked you about it afterwards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s actually how you asked me: \u201cDennis, this is <em>real<\/em>. Do you want to tell that story?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said, \u201cWell, number one, it\u2019s true; and number two, I\u2019ve learned over the years that people are ministered to more by how we\u2019ve dealt with our mistakes than by all the wisdom that we can muster to share.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they\u2019re also looking for authenticity. I think people know we\u2019re broken; and so they\u2019re looking for, \u201cHow do you apply the Bible to our brokenness in our situation?\u201d That\u2019s all I want to do\u2014is provide help and hope and not have some pious illustration of some perfect marriage that only exists\u2014well, it doesn\u2019t exist in heaven because we\u2019re not going to be married in heaven. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Somebody asked, during our staff meeting, if we knew how many words we\u2019ve recorded in our 20-plus years of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Well, let\u2019s listen to this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recording]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Hey, Keith, grab a microphone there just really quick. So I have a little spreadsheet\u2014I click on it every day, and I think the number right now is 24 million-ish\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Twenty-four million words that you\u2019ve listened to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>\u2014that make it on the air.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Right; right. You know, I don\u2019t make this stuff up\u2014I just read what\u2019s on here. [Laughter] But the number I have is 24,568: \u201cNo doubt about it, Bob\u201ds. We had a guest, our friend Max Lucado, who came on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s a reason why he\u2019s sold 100 million copies of his books.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. It was a Monday. We all gathered together in the call center, and it was not a formal call center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a room with seven phones in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was it just seven?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I didn\u2019t know how many we had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We gathered around those phones and waited for them to ring, and they rang! And they rang again. And they rang all day. At the end of the day, we had received 44 phone calls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>on Thursday, July 28<sup>th<\/sup>. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. While we are here talking on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, our staff is assembled today. We are spending time celebrating, as a staff, 40 years of ministry. We\u2019ve gotten to the point in history, where what you\u2019re listening to today was first birthed\u2014<em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, which came on the air November 9, 1992. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara, I\u2019m just curious: do you remember when the first conversations about radio were had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh yes; she does. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014around the dinner table?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>She hit me on the head with an anchor. [Laughter] It wasn\u2019t applause; it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was full speed ahead?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014it was not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>No; it was, \u201cWe need to think about this.\u201d I don\u2019t remember exactly when he first mentioned it; but I do remember thinking: \u201cWow! This would be a really big deal \/ this would take a lot more time. It\u2019s not like a conference, where you go speak and then you go back home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Radio is every day\u2014every day, every day, every day\u2014and I also knew that being on radio would put our lives and our family in front of a whole lot more people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You have both always been very transparent about your life, your family, your marriage; but it is one thing to be transparent with a group of 400\/500 couples in another city and then fly home. It\u2019s another thing to go on national radio and say, \u201cWe had a fight the other night.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s very different. So, I took a pretty big gulp. I really had to think about it a lot \/ I prayed about it a lot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to know for <em>sure<\/em>, before we said, \u201cYes,\u201d to this, that God was in this and this was what God wanted us to do, because if He wanted us to do it, I knew we would be alright; but I wanted to be confident that this was His call for our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Dennis, this was not something that you had any great yearning for. It was really leadership team at FamilyLife that was asking the question, \u201cHow can we have more influence in a culture that is rapidly devolving when it comes to marriage and family?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. We had several thousand volunteers at our conferences, all around the country. Our leadership team said: \u201cYou know, we have a ground force \/ an army on the ground. We need an air force, and we need something that makes a bigger difference in marriages and families and increases our reach.\u201d It wasn\u2019t a conclusion that this would be a success. As you know, Bob, a lot of radio programs have started over the years, and they\u2019re no longer in existence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There were a number of indicators \/ fingerprints-of-God moments\u2014that\u2019s what you\u2019ve always referred to them as\u2014markers that God was saying, \u201cThis is what I have for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first came\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, the first was Barbara. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When she said, \u201cOkay\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was. She was okay with doing it because I would not have ventured out if she had not felt and agreed with me, \u201cYes; I think we can do this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a conversation with the people who helped launch <em>Focus on the<\/em> <em>Family<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, <em>Insight for Living<\/em> with Chuck Swindoll, <em>Grace to You<\/em> with John MacArthur, and a number of other well-known Christian radio ministries\u2014our friends at Ambassador Advertising. They were routinely being talked to by people who said, \u201cWe\u2019re interested in starting a radio program.\u201d When you called and said, \u201cWe\u2019re thinking about it,\u201d you didn\u2019t know that they had a lot of people who were calling them. You just knew that, when they said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to explore this with you,\u201d it was something <em>unique<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I didn\u2019t realize, Bob\u2014they\u2019d said, \u201cDennis, do you realize how many Christian leaders have come to us, over the past five years, to start Christian radio broadcast?\u201d I said: \u201cI have no idea\u2014five, six, seven \/ over a five-year period?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cFifty.\u201d They said, \u201cDo you know how many we\u2019ve said, \u2018Yes,\u2019 to?\u201d I said, \u201cNo idea.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Ambassador Advertising was, then and is today, the number one syndicator of Christian broadcast in the country. I had a little audition with Al Sanders, who\u2019s kind of the grandfather of Christian radio. I guess I must have passed his audition because, at the end of the day, they said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to do this.\u201d That was the second answer to prayer, after Barbara. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The next answer to prayer came when a donor \/ a friend of the ministry sat down and wrote what was, at that time, the largest check we had ever received as a donation to this ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019ll never forget sitting in my office, seated across the room from a couple, who\u2019d flown in from Texas\u2014who have since become very, very dear friends\u2014and not just because they gave financially, but just because of their interest in Barbara\u2019s life, mine, our family. We\u2019ve shared a lot of life together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis couple came in to FamilyLife and said, \u201cWhat do you have that needs to be funded?\u201d We said, \u201cWell, we\u2019d like to do a parenting conference.\u201d They said, \u201cWhat else do you have?\u201d I said: \u201cWell, we\u2019d like to start this radio broadcast in the future. We have a little money saved at the ministry, but don\u2019t have it all.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Christian broadcast like this is like a manufacturing process. It is literally 180 steps from the time a broadcast idea is generated to the time it ends up on air, and we needed that money. We didn\u2019t know how badly we needed it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said: \u201cWell, okay. Thanks,\u201d and flew off. And then I thought, \u201cWell, that was interesting.\u201d They called back the next day and said: \u201cYou can go do your parenting conference. Just don\u2019t tell anybody.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, giving a gift \/ a sizable gift to a ministry like that\u2014I didn\u2019t tell people who gave the gift\u2014but it became apparent in our small ministry, here in Little Rock, that there had been a gift given that enabled us to go do our parenting conference.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And they knew who\u2019d been visiting recently.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they knew who was here. I had to call the couple to say: \u201cHey, folks found out. I\u2019m sorry. I promised you I\u2019d keep it a secret, but we weren\u2019t able to do that.\u201d There was silence on the other end of the phone. I offered to send the money back if it needed to be; and they said, \u201cWell, you know, it was probably unfair to give you a gift of that size and ask you to keep it a secret. Besides, you can go do radio program too.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to say, I wept. Bob, it was another illustration of many times that God has His signature to us, here at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, as it turned out, we had to scramble for our first radio programs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, Bob, you\u2019re really leaving out something pretty important here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>I was thinking the same thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why don\u2019t you tell him what he\u2019s leaving out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>He\u2019s leaving out the other answer to prayer, which would be number four\u2014and that is God supplying Bob Lepine to be the co-host because I remember that Bob was very content\u2014[Laughter]\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014is that right?\u2014in your previous dwelling place in San Antonio, Texas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I was happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He liked the Mexican food in San Antonio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the Spurs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And the basketball; that\u2019s right\u2014and was not very interested, initially, in coming\u2014but his wife and his mother both thought it would be a very good fit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Part of the confirmation for us that God was in this was we weren\u2019t giving in to fleshly desire. It wasn\u2019t something that we thought: \u201cMan! It would really be fun to leave San Antonio, move to Little Rock, and do this.\u201d There was not a lot in me saying, \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019d like to do.\u201d But there was a clear sense for both of us\u2014that God\u2019s hand seemed to be on this. This seemed to be His direction for our lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>As I\u2019ve told friends, it is better to be in the will of God in Nineveh than to be in the belly of the big fish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So we moved to Nineveh, Arkansas, back in 1992. [Laughter] Within a couple of months, we had the opportunity to launch a program, ahead of schedule.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>On the fifth miracle that occurred. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We had an opportunity to go on 22 stations at some great times\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014with the number one owner of Christian radio stations in the country, Salem Broadcasting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>They had openings\u2014they called and said, \u201cCan you be ready?\u201d We hadn\u2019t recorded anything, but they needed a program.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t even have a name for it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, in fact, we had a staff meeting, not long ago, as we were celebrating a milestone, here at <em>FamilyLife Today. <\/em>Somebody asked about the name of the program. Emmitt Fowler, who works with us here, was hosting that day. This is kind of interesting how this came up. Listen to this clip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recording]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Bob, you mentioned the name of the program. You know, it\u2019s amazing what you can find if you dig deep enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh yes; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>And I actually found a list of suggested names of a program from that meeting in Bob\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s amazing what you can find if you fabricate too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>There was a list of names that were given\u2014as I understand it\u2014pretty serious consideration, and yet were rejected. I thought I\u2019d share just a few of those with you. The first that I found was <em>FamilyLife Yesterday<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. We said, \u201cNo,\u201d to that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>I think that was probably a good call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>The Odd Life of Dennis and Bob<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Focus on the American Family Radio<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; no, we\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>That may have caused some confusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019m shocked; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Yes. <em>Bob Lepine and That Other Guy<\/em>. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So there you go\u2014that\u2019s a little of how the program naming\u2014we didn\u2019t sit in front of a whiteboard\u2014we brainstormed names \/ we came up with names\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>And none of those names were really viable. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No; no. But <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>stuck. We were on the air four weeks after we had come up with that name, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I wish our listeners could have seen\u2014we did not have the vision for this, Bob, to take a picture of the place where we did the first broadcast. We called it Bethlehem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Actually, I think we do have some pictures\u2014we\u2019ll put them on the website. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This was right across the road from Asher Auto Salvage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a garage that had been converted into a recording studio\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014roughly speaking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and it had burlap and egg crates on the walls. Here\u2019s what I remember\u2014it cost us $30 an hour to record.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they gave us half-price\u2014it was $15.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was $15 an hour\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That included the technician.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We launched in November of 1992 on 22 radio stations. Today, <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is heard on a network of stations that exceeds more than a thousand stations and outlets, all across the country, and has now moved into foreign countries as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I remember the first day the broadcast was aired. It was a Monday. We all gathered together in the call center, and it was not a formal call center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It was a room with seven phones in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was it just seven?! I didn\u2019t know how many we had, but we gathered around those phones and waited for them to ring. And they rang! And they rang again. And they rang all day. At the end of the day, we had received 44 phone calls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And part of it\u2019s because we offered a resource that we hadn\u2019t created yet. That was not one of our greater moments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe did have some conversation as we were meeting with our staff about the core of the ministry and what we were about when we started. What we\u2019re about today hasn\u2019t changed over the last two-plus decades on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Why were those three things the foundational building blocks that you chose, and why do they remain key to the program today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, if it\u2019s not biblical, I don\u2019t have anything to say. I mean, it\u2019s not a matter of happy homes\u2014it\u2019s a matter of godly homes and pointing people to Christ. If we don\u2019t talk from the Scripture, then people are building their houses on the sand. I think practical has always been a part of what FamilyLife\u2019s all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe want to help people apply the Scriptures to their lives. Then relevance is\u2014we\u2019ve always wanted to be market-sensitive; but again, let the Bible speak to where people are, and let them apply it to their own marriages, families, and singles\u2019 lives too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, really, the radio\u2019s just a reflection of what the FamilyLife ministry was before radio started. The <em>Weekend<\/em>s<em> to Remember<\/em> were practical, biblical, relevant, authentic, and transparent. All of those characteristics just transferred through. It\u2019s really a reflection of Dennis\u2019s leadership, and Dennis\u2019s life, and how he\u2019s ministered, and how he\u2019s modeled that for others, who were speakers, and then modeled it on the radio. That\u2019s how he\u2019s done ministry and taught us to do ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Speaking of modeling on the radio\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>\u2014we just happen to have a time when Dennis gave some very\u2014I\u2019m not sure how\u2014I guess it was biblical advice\u2014certainly practical advice and maybe even relevant, depending on your marriage situation\u2014which people will understand when they hear in a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou gave some very wise advice to Lou Priolo when he was here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Program]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if your wife comes to you and says, \u201cDoes this dress make me look fat?\u201d what do you say, Lou?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>\u201cYes, of course.\u201d You say, \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If she says, \u201cDoes this dress make me look fat?\u201d and you\u2019re about to go out somewhere and you just say, \u201cYes, it does.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>Well, you could say\u2014you know, you could say, \u201cSweetheart, it\u2019s not the most flattering dress.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There you go! I would give you some biblical counsel in return. I would say, speaking the truth in love\u2014and there is a way to speak the truth\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>Okay; so, teach me. You counsel me: \u201cHow would I tell my wife in this situation?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, I would just say to her, \u201cYou know, sweetheart, you have got other dresses that make you look better.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I agree; that\u2019s a <em>much<\/em> better way to say it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, it\u2019s\u2014I just wouldn\u2019t say, \u201cYes.\u201d [Laughter] I mean, that would not be good\u2014in the south or in the north! I\u2019m afraid that the cold winds blow wherever that goes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lou: <\/strong>I <em>never<\/em> respond that way. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want to call your wife! You were giving an illustration, and you talked about the fact that the previous week you and Barbara had had an argument. I remember thinking to myself: \u201cOkay, we may need to edit that out. I don\u2019t know if you want to go on national radio and talk about the fight you had with your wife a week ago.\u201d I asked you about it afterwards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s actually how you asked me: \u201cDennis, this is <em>real<\/em>. Do you want to tell that story?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you said, \u201cWell, number one, it\u2019s true; and number two, I\u2019ve learned over the years that people are ministered to more by how we\u2019ve dealt with our mistakes than by all the wisdom that we can muster to share.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And they\u2019re also looking for authenticity. I think people know we\u2019re broken; and so they\u2019re looking for, \u201cHow do you apply the Bible to our brokenness in our situation?\u201d That\u2019s all I want to do\u2014is provide help and hope and not have some pious illustration of some perfect marriage that only exists\u2014well, it doesn\u2019t exist in heaven because we\u2019re not going to be married in heaven. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Somebody asked, during our staff meeting, if we knew how many words we\u2019ve recorded in our 20-plus years of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. So I have a little spreadsheet\u2014I click on it every day, and I think the number right now is 24 million-ish\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Twenty-four million words that you\u2019ve listened to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>\u2014that make it on the air.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Right; right. You know, I don\u2019t make this stuff up\u2014I just read what\u2019s on here. [Laughter] But the number I have is 24,568: \u201cNo doubt about it, Bob\u201ds. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That wasn\u2019t funny! It\u2019s going to go downhill from here!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>Boy; you know what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; you know what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>It gets worse!\u00a0 Thirty-three thousand, one hundred forty-three: \u201cYou know what?s\u201d [Laughter] But he [Bob] doesn\u2019t get off the hook\u2014I have 29,339: \u201cMm. Mm. Mm\u201ds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Mm. Mm. Mm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>He\u2019s a very agreeable person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No; he had indigestion. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and in all of those words\u2014you always have a few bloopers. We\u2019ve had our share of bloopers, but probably our favorite blooper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is our favorite that we can air.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We were innocent parties to this particular blooper. We had a guest, our friend Max Lucado, who came on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s a reason why he\u2019s sold 100 million copies of his books.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Yes; listen to this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recording]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emmitt: <\/strong>You remember\u2014just a few months ago, Max Lucado was here. I want you to listen to a moment in the studio with Max Lucado. It was actually Max that needed fixing, as he has some trouble remembering who wrote the Bible\u2014more accurately, he has trouble remembering who didn\u2019t write the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previous Program]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Max: <\/strong>Across the table, the father winked at me and the mother smiled at me. They reached over me, petted me, and he thought, \u201cI may be in a place called home.\u201d They adopted him, and he went on to grow up in that home and to lead a wonderful life. He gave his heart to Christ and became a great Christian man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole reason I put that story in the Bible is because\u2014[Laughter] The reason Moses, and Paul, and I collaborated on that book\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Beep]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Keith: <\/strong>Take two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Max: <\/strong>The reason I put that story in the Bible is because that\u2019s a story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said it again. That is a picture of grace\u2014that we have been adopted. In fact, this is biblical language; isn\u2019t it?\u2014that we have been adopted into the family of God \/ that God has made a covenant with us to bring us, and let us sit at the table, and spend eternity with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s a picture of grace that God didn\u2019t strike you dead for putting a story in the Bible. [Laughter] We can cut that out too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Max is a good sport. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>People enjoy our laughter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you only knew how much we laughed and left it out of the broadcast.
