Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition. We\u2019ve said over and over again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014the thing that our listeners have said to us throughout the years that they are most concerned about \/ that they need the most help with, as they\u2019re raising their children, is the whole issue of spiritual formation \/ spiritual development. There is a lot we care about with our kids\u2014their health, their safety, their intelligence. We want them to form healthy relationships; but ultimately, it\u2019s their walk with God that has got to be at the center of all of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; we surveyed over a hundred thousand people in the church and asked them, \u201cWhat are your greatest needs in marriage and family?\u201d\u00a0 The parenting issue\u2014this was number one by far: \u201cHow do I pass on my faith to my kids?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019ll tell you, Bob\u2014looking at what\u2019s happening to our youth today\u2014as they leave the church, and turn their back on the church, and not come back after they graduate from high school\u2014this ought to concern parents today. We ought to be passing on practical ways, like we\u2019re going to pass on toady, of how parents can help their faith <em>stick<\/em> to their children\u2019s lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; this is a subject that actually came up last fall as we were hosting our Blended and Blessed<sup>\u2122<\/sup> event out in Southern California. Ron Deal, who gives leadership to FamilyLife\u2019s Blended<sup>\u2122<\/sup> Family Ministry, was hosting this event. This was for people who are leaders in ministering to stepfamilies \/ blended families but, also, for pastors and anyone who has an interest in this subject. He had them gather together, and he asked Dr. Kara Powell to come in and speak about spiritual formation with children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think, in a blended family situation, there are some nuances here \/ there is some uniqueness for how you are going to have to engage on this subject. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; and just because she is speaking at a blended family conference doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re not going to be able to take practical tools away from this message in your own family. You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut today, as you said, Dennis, we\u2019re going to hear from Dr. Kara Powell, who is an educator \/ she\u2019s a professor. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s an author and a speaker\u2014serves as the Executive Director at the Fuller Youth Institute and is a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary. She\u2019s written a book called <em>Sticky Faith<\/em>. That\u2019s what she came to talk to these blended family experts about\u2014cultivating a sticky faith as we raise our sons and daughters. Here\u2019s Kara Powell. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kara: <\/strong>Really good research indicates that about one in two young people drift from God and the church after they graduate from high school. One really massive study\u2014four out of five of those who drift <em>intended<\/em> to cross well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of why I am <em>so<\/em> <em>honored<\/em> to be here today is because of my own family background. My parents got divorced when I was about six. The word, parents, is a weird word for me. To say, \u201cMom and Dad\u201d together\u2014that did not go together in my vocabulary\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it was \u201cMom and Jim\u201d \/ \u201cDad and Helen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the Lord has done amazing things in my parents\u2019 lives. All four of them are now followers of Jesus; but as a daughter of divorce, I\u2019ve got to say\u2014pretty much, every day, issues emerge for me. I see it in the way I respond to situations. I see it in the way that I view God. I see it in the way that I parent \/ that I relate to my husband\u2014and how it is tainted by a fear of abandonment. That\u2019s so common in kids of divorce. A lot of times, that fear of abandonment can transfer into how we view God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, what we\u2019re going to look at this morning is research that we\u2019ve done on over 500 young people as well as 50 families that are especially effective at building long-term faith. Now, while our study looked at high school seniors during their first three years in college, what we\u2019ve seen has amazing ramifications for all ages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we first started unearthing this research about lifelong faith \/ what we call \u201csticky faith,\u201d our youngest, Jessica, was maybe about four or five. It changed the way that I parented Jessica. It changed the way that my husband parented Jessica. So, while we studied teenagers, it\u2019s never too early and it\u2019s never too late to start putting these principles into practice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, what we\u2019re going to talk about in this session is three phrases that are especially helpful in building sticky faith\u2014three things that we can say to kids, who come from blended families\u2014and three phrases that I hope you leave here and you train parents to be quick to say these phrases. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn our study of these youth group graduates, 70 percent of youth group graduates had <em>significant<\/em> questions about their faith. Seven out of ten had <em>big<\/em>, tough questions about God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, they had\u2014I mean, 50 different questions. But as our research team tried to analyze them, we felt like they clustered into four major categories. These were the top four categories: \u201cDoes God exist?\u201d \u201cDoes God love me?\u201d \u201cAm I living the life God wants?\u201d and \u201cIs Christianity true or the only way to God?\u201d What\u2019s fascinating to me about these questions is two of them are pretty classic apologetics questions: \u201cDoes God exist?\u201d and \u201cIs Christianity the only way to God?\u201d\u00a0 But then, two of them are very personal questions about my life: \u201cDoes God love me?\u201dand \u201cAm I living the life that God wants?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I\u2019m asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the biggest surprise out of your <em>Sticky Faith<\/em> research?\u201d I usually talk about this\u2014how important it is to welcome young people in their tough questions. In fact, one of the things that we found is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when young people have the chance to express and explore their doubts, that\u2019s actually correlated with greater faith maturity in high school and college. Let me put it more simply: \u201cDoubt isn\u2019t toxic to faith; silence is.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, according to some research, children who are in blended families\u2014the questions that they are asking, internally, don\u2019t get verbalized, externally. According to one study, two-thirds of young adult children, whose parents were going through a divorce, report that <em>no one<\/em> from their churches\u2014the subjects were Jewish and Christian\u2014no one from their synagogue, no one from their congregation, no one from their parish reached out to them and asked: \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d and \u201cHow is that divorce, that is tearing apart your family\u2014how is that affecting the big questions you have about God, and yourself, and life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAndy Root, who is a Fuller alum, has done some fascinating research on what happens to kids after they\u2019ve gone through and are in the midst of a divorce experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAndy\u2019s parents went through a divorce. And what Andy well describes is that, when you\u2019re a child of divorce \/ your parents split, it causes major existential questions\u2014major questions about who you are because you are a product of a man and a woman; and then, all of a sudden, they are no longer together: \u201cWhat does that mean about <em>you<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways that I started thinking about this\u2014and I don\u2019t mean to cheapen the experience\u2014but in the movie, <em>Back to the Future<\/em>, Marty McFly starts to disappear and his sibling kind of starts to disappear because this union that was of his parents, when they were teenagers, all of a sudden looks like it\u2019s not going to happen. That\u2019s what young people are walking around, after their parents have been through a divorce. There is this angst that kids of divorce experience\u2014that kids, who are in blended families, adopteds, single-parenting \/ whatever it might be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014experience that particular question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy hope and prayer is that we\u2014as people who have made unique commitments to blended, divorced, remarried families, etc.\u2014we have the courage to ask kids, \u201cHey, what questions does your family situation or does life, in general, raise for you?\u201d\u00a0 A lot of adults are afraid to ask kids about their questions because they are afraid they won\u2019t be able to answer them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the good news\u2014we don\u2019t necessarily have to have an answer. What we can do is empathize and say, \u201cI don\u2019t know for sure.\u201d\u00a0 Out of our research, four words\u2014\u201cI don\u2019t know, but\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, but here\u2019s what I do know about God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, but we can meet in community and talk about it,\u201d or \u201c\u2026but let\u2019s figure out the answers together,\u201d or \u201c\u2026but the God of the universe loves <em>you<\/em> unconditionally.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the first phrase \/ four words: \u201cI don\u2019t know, but\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second phrase\u2014I want to tell you a little bit about more of our research. We had a PhD student, whose whole focus was parent\/child conversations about faith. This is all she studied in the midst of this three years of research. What she unearthed\u2014it\u2019s changed the way that I interact with my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let\u2019s say I\u2019m talking to my son, Nathan, perhaps, on the way home from church. What a typical parent will do is ask their kid: \u201cHey, how was church?\u00a0 How was youth group?\u00a0 What did you talk about?\u00a0 What did you study?\u00a0 What did you learn about in Sunday school?\u201d\u00a0 Now, depending on Nathan\u2019s mood or personality \/ relationship with me\u2014there might be an answer \/ there might be an answer\u2014there might be kind of a, \u201cMom, give me a little space,\u201d\u2014silence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat our research suggests\u2014it is a good thing for me, as a mom, to keep asking Nathan questions; but what is as important and much less practiced is parents sharing about their own faith experiences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, a lot of times, that can happen at family dinners; and family dinners are great. We had a wonderful one\u2014the five of us\u2014last night. But I\u2019ve got to be honest\u2014a lot of times, our family dinners\u2014they are not homeruns. Family dinners\u2014sometimes work \/ sometimes don\u2019t work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s one of the interesting facets of our research\u2014when it comes to talking with our kids about faith and to helping equip parents talk to their kids about faith, there\u2019s real power when parents share\u2014not just about what God is teaching them now\u2014but about their spiritual journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in the midst of our research of how important it is for parents to share organically, and authentically, and naturally\u2014here is the second phrase I want to give you\u2014and this is a super easy one; okay?\u00a0 I bet you\u2019ve, maybe, even said this phrase already today\u2014it\u2019s just one word, and that is \u201cGod\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to help parents know that they can, they need to, and they get to talk about God with their kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways that we have done that is at dinner. We did highs and lows since our kids were little; but out of our <em>Sticky Faith<\/em> research, we\u2019ve added another question: \u201cHow did you see God at work today?\u00a0 How did you see God at work today?\u201d\u00a0 Now, when Dave and I first introduced that question our, then, nine-year-old said, \u201cWell, Mommy\/Daddy, I can\u2019t really answer that question.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhy not?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t have a job,\u201d\u2014\u201cHow did she see God <em>at<\/em> <em>work<\/em> today?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But then, we reframed it as \u201cHow did you see God working?\u201d\u2014yes\u2014she, and her brother, and her sister\u2014they do have things to say. And equally importantly, Dave and I get to share too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t know, but\u2026\u201d in the midst of kids\u2019 tough questions; and in moments of everyday life, simply encourage parents to talk more about God. So, let\u2019s turn now to the third phrase. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA mom\u2014she lives about 15 minutes from here. While our research is nationwide, this mom happens to live about 15 minutes from here. She was telling me, as I interviewed her here as one of 50 families that are really effective at building long-term faith, about the interaction she had with her six-year-old son. He was one of those kids\u2014I have one of these kids too\u2014that when you meet with the teacher at parent\/teacher conference, the first word the teacher uses to describe that kid is \u201cverbal.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] Some of you have those <em>verbal<\/em> kids too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this six-year-old had just pushed this mom too far. She, in a spirit of anger, said: \u201cGo to your room!\u00a0 I don\u2019t even really like you right now.\u201d\u00a0 As he walked away from her to his room, it\u2019s like\u2014she said: \u201cIt was like he got smaller as he walked. I knew I had pushed it\u2014I had gone too far.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that day, while he was at kindergarten, she said: \u201cI went to Target, and I bought a Lego<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> set. I wrote him a very simple note that a six-year-old could understand: \u2018I was wrong. I\u2019m sorry. Please forgive me.\u2019\u201d He came home from school. She gave him the Lego set \/ she gave him the note. And sure enough, he played a lot with that Lego set all week \/ the next week. Then, the Lego set got less interesting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I haven\u2019t told you about this six-year-old is he is now about twenty-three. This mom helped him move when he graduated from high school and went to college; and then, summers in college back home; and, then, after college to an apartment. She\u2019s often been helping pack up boxes. That Lego set is long gone, but he still has this note from his mom where she said two powerful words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it\u2019s the last phrase I want to leave you with\u2014a phrase that kids need to hear from <em>all<\/em> adults\u2014and I needed to hear, given my family situation: \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, as we studied these 50 families, one of the parents that I got to interview\u2014I did about 12 of the interviews\u2014one of the parents that I got to interview, when it was the designated time to call him\u2014he is a parent of a high school girl and two college girls. He said: \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t even feel like I should be having this conversation with you.\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019ve had to apologize to all three of my daughters in the last week.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cThat\u2019s <em>exactly<\/em> why we want to talk to you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know what separates Christianity from every other religion on the planet?\u2014is grace\u2014God\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em> grace. And out of our <em>Sticky Faith<\/em> research, our family\u2014not only do we ask, \u201cHow did you see God at work today?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but every night that we happen to have dinner together, we also talk about our greatest mistakes \/ our greatest mistakes. It\u2019s a time when we, as parents, get to apologize to our kids too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we\u2019ve interviewed parents\u2014especially parents from blended families \/ I shouldn\u2019t say, \u201cespecially parents from blended families\u201d\u2014but as we\u2019ve interviewed parents, <em>including<\/em> parents from blended families, they say that they\u2019ve learned that they need to say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d to their kids also. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was 26, I was dating Dave, who is now my husband. It triggered a lot of issues for me. My mom basically was left by my dad, and there are multiple women in our family who have been left by men. The irony was that, the closer Dave and I got, the more I fell in love with him, and the more afraid I was that he was going to leave me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that I would be one more woman in our family who got left by a man that she loved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Dave and I got closer and closer in our dating relationship, I reached out to my dad. I said, \u201cWe need to talk about your and mom\u2019s divorce.\u201d\u00a0 We met at a Red Robin Burgers<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> about 20 minutes from here\u2014halfway between my house in Pasadena and his house in San Diego. He came with written remarks. He\u2019s an attorney\u2014so he wanted to be prepared. [Laughter]\u00a0 He put on his glasses. He read, and he ad-libbed; but what I remember most is my dad saying to me: \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\u00a0 I sat there in that Red Robin Burger place, in a booth, with tears streaming down my face because I heard those words from my dad in a new and a fresh\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and maybe, really, first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGrace is what separates Christianity from every other religion. If we can\u2019t forgive each other \/ if we can\u2019t help families experience God\u2019s healing and God\u2019s forgiveness, then, we have no business meeting here today. But it\u2019s because of what Jesus did on the cross\u2014His death and resurrection\u2014that we experience grace that brings us healing in relationship with God as well as in relationship with each other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was driving down here, the most dominate prayer that I had is, \u201cGod, help today just be part of what You\u2019re doing in families around the country.\u201d\u00a0 I believe God is at work in families around the country; and you are key, strategic, called leaders to fan those flames.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m hoping that these three phrases are phrases that you, as leaders, use with kids\u2014and maybe, even more importantly, you train parents, and stepparents, and grandparents, and foster parents, and adoptive parents how to use these phrases too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we have been listening to Kara Powell as she shared with people, who are involved in ministry to blended and stepfamilies, at the Summit on Stepfamily Ministry in Southern California last fall. She was speaking about how we can help our kids understand the reality of who God is, even in the brokenness of our own family situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; she\u2019s talking, Bob, about authentically living out your faith in front of your kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014being real \/ not being plastic\u2014not being Pharisaical \/ not saying one thing and doing another\u2014but instead, yes; just be practical with your children. When you\u2019re struggling, let them know; and let them know how you are processing that struggle. And when you run into someone who needs to be forgiven, maybe, let your son or your daughter into the interior of your life as you share with them how you move to forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what she\u2019s talking about\u2014authentic Christian living, lived out at home, is\u2014in my opinion\u2014the most powerful message we can imprint upon our children\u2019s lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and of course, this is something Kara addresses in the book that she\u2019s written, <em>The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Family<\/em>, which is a book that we\u2019ve got in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center. We\u2019ve said over and over again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014the thing that our listeners have said to us throughout the years that they are most concerned about \/ that they need the most help with, as they\u2019re raising their children, is the whole issue of spiritual formation \/ spiritual development. There is a lot we care about with our kids\u2014their health, their safety, their intelligence. We want them to form healthy relationships; but ultimately, it\u2019s their walk with God that has got to be at the center of all of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; we surveyed over a hundred thousand people in the church and asked them, \u201cWhat are your greatest needs in marriage and family?\u201d\u00a0 The parenting issue\u2014this was number one by far: \u201cHow do I pass on my faith to my kids?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019ll tell you, Bob\u2014looking at what\u2019s happening to our youth today\u2014as they leave the church, and turn their back on the church, and not come back after they graduate from high school\u2014this ought to concern parents today. We ought to be passing on practical ways, like we\u2019re going to pass on toady, of how parents can help their faith <em>stick<\/em> to their children\u2019s lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; this is a subject that actually came up last fall as we were hosting our Blended and Blessed<sup>\u2122<\/sup> event out in Southern California. Ron Deal, who gives leadership to FamilyLife\u2019s Blended<sup>\u2122<\/sup> Family Ministry, was hosting this event. This was for people who are leaders in ministering to stepfamilies \/ blended families but, also, for pastors and anyone who has an interest in this subject. He had them gather together, and he asked Dr. Kara Powell to come in and speak about spiritual formation with children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think, in a blended family situation, there are some nuances here \/ there is some uniqueness for how you are going to have to engage on this subject. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; and just because she is speaking at a blended family conference doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re not going to be able to take practical tools away from this message in your own family. She\u2019s written a book called <em>Sticky Faith<\/em>. That\u2019s what she came to talk to these blended family experts about\u2014cultivating a sticky faith as we raise our sons and daughters. Here\u2019s Kara Powell. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kara: <\/strong>Really good research indicates that about one in two young people drift from God and the church after they graduate from high school. One really massive study\u2014four out of five of those who drift <em>intended<\/em> to cross well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of why I am <em>so<\/em> <em>honored<\/em> to be here today is because of my own family background. My parents got divorced when I was about six. The word, parents, is a weird word for me. To say, \u201cMom and Dad\u201d together\u2014that did not go together in my vocabulary\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it was \u201cMom and Jim\u201d \/ \u201cDad and Helen.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the Lord has done amazing things in my parents\u2019 lives. All four of them are now followers of Jesus; but as a daughter of divorce, I\u2019ve got to say\u2014pretty much, every day, issues emerge for me. I see it in the way I respond to situations. I see it in the way that I view God. I see it in the way that I parent \/ that I relate to my husband\u2014and how it is tainted by a fear of abandonment. That\u2019s so common in kids of divorce. A lot of times, that fear of abandonment can transfer into how we view God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, what we\u2019re going to look at this morning is research that we\u2019ve done on over 500 young people as well as 50 families that are especially effective at building long-term faith. Now, while our study looked at high school seniors during their first three years in college, what we\u2019ve seen has amazing ramifications for all ages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we first started unearthing this research about lifelong faith \/ what we call \u201csticky faith,\u201d our youngest, Jessica, was maybe about four or five. It changed the way that I parented Jessica. It changed the way that my husband parented Jessica. So, while we studied teenagers, it\u2019s never too early and it\u2019s never too late to start putting these principles into practice. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, what we\u2019re going to talk about in this session is three phrases that are especially helpful in building sticky faith\u2014three things that we can say to kids, who come from blended families\u2014and three phrases that I hope you leave here and you train parents to be quick to say these phrases. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn our study of these youth group graduates, 70 percent of youth group graduates had <em>significant<\/em> questions about their faith. Seven out of ten had <em>big<\/em>, tough questions about God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, they had\u2014I mean, 50 different questions. But as our research team tried to analyze them, we felt like they clustered into four major categories. These were the top four categories: \u201cDoes God exist?\u201d \u201cDoes God love me?\u201d \u201cAm I living the life God wants?\u201d and \u201cIs Christianity true or the only way to God?\u201d What\u2019s fascinating to me about these questions is two of them are pretty classic apologetics questions: \u201cDoes God exist?\u201d and \u201cIs Christianity the only way to God?\u201d\u00a0 But then, two of them are very personal questions about my life: \u201cDoes God love me?\u201dand \u201cAm I living the life that God wants?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I\u2019m asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s the biggest surprise out of your <em>Sticky Faith<\/em> research?\u201d I usually talk about this\u2014how important it is to welcome young people in their tough questions. In fact, one of the things that we found is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014when young people have the chance to express and explore their doubts, that\u2019s actually correlated with greater faith maturity in high school and college. Let me put it more simply: \u201cDoubt isn\u2019t toxic to faith; silence is.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, according to some research, children who are in blended families\u2014the questions that they are asking, internally, don\u2019t get verbalized, externally. According to one study, two-thirds of young adult children, whose parents were going through a divorce, report that <em>no one<\/em> from their churches\u2014the subjects were Jewish and Christian\u2014no one from their synagogue, no one from their congregation, no one from their parish reached out to them and asked: \u201cHow are you doing?\u201d and \u201cHow is that divorce, that is tearing apart your family\u2014how is that affecting the big questions you have about God, and yourself, and life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAndy Root, who is a Fuller alum, has done some fascinating research on what happens to kids after they\u2019ve gone through and are in the midst of a divorce experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAndy\u2019s parents went through a divorce. And what Andy well describes is that, when you\u2019re a child of divorce \/ your parents split, it causes major existential questions\u2014major questions about who you are because you are a product of a man and a woman; and then, all of a sudden, they are no longer together: \u201cWhat does that mean about <em>you<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways that I started thinking about this\u2014and I don\u2019t mean to cheapen the experience\u2014but in the movie, <em>Back to the Future<\/em>, Marty McFly starts to disappear and his sibling kind of starts to disappear because this union that was of his parents, when they were teenagers, all of a sudden looks like it\u2019s not going to happen. That\u2019s what young people are walking around, after their parents have been through a divorce. There is this angst that kids of divorce experience\u2014that kids, who are in blended families, adopteds, single-parenting \/ whatever it might be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014experience that particular question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy hope and prayer is that we\u2014as people who have made unique commitments to blended, divorced, remarried families, etc.\u2014we have the courage to ask kids, \u201cHey, what questions does your family situation or does life, in general, raise for you?\u201d\u00a0 A lot of adults are afraid to ask kids about their questions because they are afraid they won\u2019t be able to answer them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the good news\u2014we don\u2019t necessarily have to have an answer. What we can do is empathize and say, \u201cI don\u2019t know for sure.\u201d\u00a0 Out of our research, four words\u2014\u201cI don\u2019t know, but\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, but here\u2019s what I do know about God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, but we can meet in community and talk about it,\u201d or \u201c\u2026but let\u2019s figure out the answers together,\u201d or \u201c\u2026but the God of the universe loves <em>you<\/em> unconditionally.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the first phrase \/ four words: \u201cI don\u2019t know, but\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second phrase\u2014I want to tell you a little bit about more of our research. We had a PhD student, whose whole focus was parent\/child conversations about faith. This is all she studied in the midst of this three years of research. What she unearthed\u2014it\u2019s changed the way that I interact with my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let\u2019s say I\u2019m talking to my son, Nathan, perhaps, on the way home from church. What a typical parent will do is ask their kid: \u201cHey, how was church?\u00a0 How was youth group?\u00a0 What did you talk about?\u00a0 What did you study?\u00a0 What did you learn about in Sunday school?\u201d\u00a0 Now, depending on Nathan\u2019s mood or personality \/ relationship with me\u2014there might be an answer \/ there might be an answer\u2014there might be kind of a, \u201cMom, give me a little space,\u201d\u2014silence. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat our research suggests\u2014it is a good thing for me, as a mom, to keep asking Nathan questions; but what is as important and much less practiced is parents sharing about their own faith experiences. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, a lot of times, that can happen at family dinners; and family dinners are great. We had a wonderful one\u2014the five of us\u2014last night. But I\u2019ve got to be honest\u2014a lot of times, our family dinners\u2014they are not homeruns. Family dinners\u2014sometimes work \/ sometimes don\u2019t work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s one of the interesting facets of our research\u2014when it comes to talking with our kids about faith and to helping equip parents talk to their kids about faith, there\u2019s real power when parents share\u2014not just about what God is teaching them now\u2014but about their spiritual journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, in the midst of our research of how important it is for parents to share organically, and authentically, and naturally\u2014here is the second phrase I want to give you\u2014and this is a super easy one; okay?\u00a0 I bet you\u2019ve, maybe, even said this phrase already today\u2014it\u2019s just one word, and that is \u201cGod\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to help parents know that they can, they need to, and they get to talk about God with their kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways that we have done that is at dinner. We did highs and lows since our kids were little; but out of our <em>Sticky Faith<\/em> research, we\u2019ve added another question: \u201cHow did you see God at work today?\u00a0 How did you see God at work today?\u201d\u00a0 Now, when Dave and I first introduced that question our, then, nine-year-old said, \u201cWell, Mommy\/Daddy, I can\u2019t really answer that question.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhy not?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t have a job,\u201d\u2014\u201cHow did she see God <em>at<\/em> <em>work<\/em> today?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But then, we reframed it as \u201cHow did you see God working?\u201d\u2014yes\u2014she, and her brother, and her sister\u2014they do have things to say. And equally importantly, Dave and I get to share too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t know, but\u2026\u201d in the midst of kids\u2019 tough questions; and in moments of everyday life, simply encourage parents to talk more about God. So, let\u2019s turn now to the third phrase. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA mom\u2014she lives about 15 minutes from here. While our research is nationwide, this mom happens to live about 15 minutes from here. She was telling me, as I interviewed her here as one of 50 families that are really effective at building long-term faith, about the interaction she had with her six-year-old son. He was one of those kids\u2014I have one of these kids too\u2014that when you meet with the teacher at parent\/teacher conference, the first word the teacher uses to describe that kid is \u201cverbal.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter] Some of you have those <em>verbal<\/em> kids too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this six-year-old had just pushed this mom too far. She, in a spirit of anger, said: \u201cGo to your room!\u00a0 I don\u2019t even really like you right now.\u201d\u00a0 As he walked away from her to his room, it\u2019s like\u2014she said: \u201cIt was like he got smaller as he walked. I knew I had pushed it\u2014I had gone too far.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that day, while he was at kindergarten, she said: \u201cI went to Target, and I bought a Lego<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> set. I wrote him a very simple note that a six-year-old could understand: \u2018I was wrong. I\u2019m sorry. Please forgive me.\u2019\u201d He came home from school. She gave him the Lego set \/ she gave him the note. And sure enough, he played a lot with that Lego set all week \/ the next week. Then, the Lego set got less interesting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I haven\u2019t told you about this six-year-old is he is now about twenty-three. This mom helped him move when he graduated from high school and went to college; and then, summers in college back home; and, then, after college to an apartment. She\u2019s often been helping pack up boxes. That Lego set is long gone, but he still has this note from his mom where she said two powerful words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it\u2019s the last phrase I want to leave you with\u2014a phrase that kids need to hear from <em>all<\/em> adults\u2014and I needed to hear, given my family situation: \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, as we studied these 50 families, one of the parents that I got to interview\u2014I did about 12 of the interviews\u2014one of the parents that I got to interview, when it was the designated time to call him\u2014he is a parent of a high school girl and two college girls. He said: \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t even feel like I should be having this conversation with you.\u201d He said, \u201cI\u2019ve had to apologize to all three of my daughters in the last week.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cThat\u2019s <em>exactly<\/em> why we want to talk to you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know what separates Christianity from every other religion on the planet?\u2014is grace\u2014God\u2019s <em>amazing<\/em> grace. And out of our <em>Sticky Faith<\/em> research, our family\u2014not only do we ask, \u201cHow did you see God at work today?\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but every night that we happen to have dinner together, we also talk about our greatest mistakes \/ our greatest mistakes. It\u2019s a time when we, as parents, get to apologize to our kids too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we\u2019ve interviewed parents\u2014especially parents from blended families \/ I shouldn\u2019t say, \u201cespecially parents from blended families\u201d\u2014but as we\u2019ve interviewed parents, <em>including<\/em> parents from blended families, they say that they\u2019ve learned that they need to say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d to their kids also. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was 26, I was dating Dave, who is now my husband. It triggered a lot of issues for me. My mom basically was left by my dad, and there are multiple women in our family who have been left by men. The irony was that, the closer Dave and I got, the more I fell in love with him, and the more afraid I was that he was going to leave me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that I would be one more woman in our family who got left by a man that she loved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Dave and I got closer and closer in our dating relationship, I reached out to my dad. I said, \u201cWe need to talk about your and mom\u2019s divorce.\u201d\u00a0 We met at a Red Robin Burgers<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> about 20 minutes from here\u2014halfway between my house in Pasadena and his house in San Diego. He came with written remarks. He\u2019s an attorney\u2014so he wanted to be prepared. [Laughter]\u00a0 He put on his glasses. He read, and he ad-libbed; but what I remember most is my dad saying to me: \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\u00a0 I sat there in that Red Robin Burger place, in a booth, with tears streaming down my face because I heard those words from my dad in a new and a fresh\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and maybe, really, first time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGrace is what separates Christianity from every other religion. If we can\u2019t forgive each other \/ if we can\u2019t help families experience God\u2019s healing and God\u2019s forgiveness, then, we have no business meeting here today. But it\u2019s because of what Jesus did on the cross\u2014His death and resurrection\u2014that we experience grace that brings us healing in relationship with God as well as in relationship with each other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was driving down here, the most dominate prayer that I had is, \u201cGod, help today just be part of what You\u2019re doing in families around the country.\u201d\u00a0 I believe God is at work in families around the country; and you are key, strategic, called leaders to fan those flames.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m hoping that these three phrases are phrases that you, as leaders, use with kids\u2014and maybe, even more importantly, you train parents, and stepparents, and grandparents, and foster parents, and adoptive parents how to use these phrases too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we have been listening to Kara Powell as she shared with people, who are involved in ministry to blended and stepfamilies, at the Summit on Stepfamily Ministry in Southern California last fall. She was speaking about how we can help our kids understand the reality of who God is, even in the brokenness of our own family situations. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; she\u2019s talking, Bob, about authentically living out your faith in front of your kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014being real \/ not being plastic\u2014not being Pharisaical \/ not saying one thing and doing another\u2014but instead, yes; just be practical with your children. When you\u2019re struggling, let them know; and let them know how you are processing that struggle. And when you run into someone who needs to be forgiven, maybe, let your son or your daughter into the interior of your life as you share with them how you move to forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what she\u2019s talking about\u2014authentic Christian living, lived out at home, is\u2014in my opinion\u2014the most powerful message we can imprint upon our children\u2019s lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and of course, this is something Kara addresses in the book that she\u2019s written, <em>The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Family<\/em>, which is a book that we\u2019ve got in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center.
