Matt is the former lead singer of the group Sanctus Real. This turning point is something Matt remembers very clearly.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>About seven years ago, my wife sat me down in the midst of all this chaos. I would have liked to believe things were pretty good between us, but it wasn\u2019t the truth\u2014not for her. What she said to me was: \u201cI need you to be a better leader to me. You\u2019re here, but you\u2019re not here.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is a special edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, June 24<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019ll spend time today catching up with the guy who wrote the hit song <em>Lead Me<\/em> today. We don\u2019t often get a chance to do this, but we happen to have with us for today\u2019s program a live studio audience because we are onboard the 2016 <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. [Applause] Those are some pumped-up people right there; huh?\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the cruise has been going on for awhile\u2014they\u2019re fresh! [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s always great to have a studio audience, and it\u2019s great to have our guest joining us today.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is. Matt Hammitt joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Matt, welcome back to the broadcast.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>It\u2019s good to be back!\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you guys welcome Matt Hammitt as well? [Applause] So, is your wife joining us on this cruise?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>I wish she was. She actually pulled out a few weeks ago because we\u2019re going to do a conference next week in Greenville. We\u2019re taking the whole family in the RV for two weeks; and she said, \u201cI want to stay home and get the kids ready.\u201d\n\n<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\nShe said, \u201cI\u2019ll be stressed out, you know, if I have to go home and in two days have to get everything ready.\u201d So I actually ended up bringing my dad with me\u2014it\u2019s been awesome.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool!\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That is cool.\n\nWell, for those who don\u2019t recognize the name, Matt Hammitt\u2014for a number of years, he was the lead singer in Sanctus Real. You go way back in music. We have to hear how you started your music career.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you singing\u2014we found out before we were on microphone here that you didn\u2019t play sports in high school.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>No, no. I think what ended my sports career was that I sat on the bench in soccer in junior high school. My best friend\u2019s dad was the coach. I was like, \u201cI never get to play.\u201d We\u2019re just goofing around the bench; and one of the kids says, \u201cHey man, I really think you should try putting this Icy Hot<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on your eyelids.\u201d [Laughter] So of course, you know, I give in to this dare. The minute I put it on my eyes, I get called into the game\u2014[Laughter]\u2014like right away! I\u2019m out there, running around with my eyes half swollen shut, tears coming down my face.\n\n<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\nI knew my sports career was over.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>So, thank the Lord that music came on the scene. So I was 16.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How old were you when you got your first guitar, and what were the circumstances around that?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s a good story because my parents pulled the classic Christmas\u2014all the gifts are done. I\u2019m sitting there, grateful for what I got; but in my heart, wishing I would have gotten the guitar. Then Dad says, \u201cWait a minute, there\u2019s one more,\u201d\u2014you know\u2014and I looked behind the couch. There it is\u2014my very first Samick Strat. I pulled that out with the new little amp they got me. Right away, I knew that I was going to be writing songs\u2014that was what my passion was.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And how old were you?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>At that time, I probably would have been 15 \/ almost 16.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Had you wanted a guitar and music? When did that kind of get birthed inside of you?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019d always loved to sing. I would sing in vocal groups at church, growing up, and played in a band with my brother.\n\n<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\nI really looked up to my brother a lot and thought trumpet wasn\u2019t really my thing either. Then he picked up the acoustic guitar. As soon as I heard him in the house playing it, I knew\u2014that\u2019s, \u201cI want to do that.\u201d I could already hear the little melody in my head, and getting song ideas even before I picked it up. So, it was pretty natural once I had it in my hands.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you literally started from the very beginning, thinking about writing songs.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, that was it.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right out of the gate!\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, that was it! Man, I was just song ideas all the time.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, could you play for us an early Matt Hammitt song\u2014\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014something you wrote back\u2014that nobody\u2019s ever heard of before, maybe?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Sure; sure. Let me get up on my stool here. So, sitting in my bedroom, I\u2019m 16 years old. I\u2019ve never written a song before, and this was the very first song that I ever wrote. It\u2019s very deep; okay?\n\n[Singing]\n\n<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\nOh, drinking the coffee of life,\n\nSmoking my candy cigarettes.\n\nRuling this world full of man sense\n\nAnd Marilyn\u2019s looking for love,\n\n\u2018Cause they don\u2019t love themselves.\n\nAnd passing by is my life.\n\nDo you see me, the way I am innocent?\n\nWon\u2019t you jump into my couple rocket ship?\n\nI\u2019m going somewhere you\u2019ll never forget,\n\nAnd to my magic time machine I\u2019ll take you\n\nSomewhere you\u2019ll have no regrets.\n\nYou\u2019ll have no regrets.\n\n<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\nI could play the whole thing, but I think that\u2019ll give you a little\u2014\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow; wow! [Laughter \/ applause]\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u2014you get the gist.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, coffee, and candy cigarettes, and rockets\u2014that\u2019s where you were back then?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Super deep. Super deep; yes\u2014super deep.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Has kind of a Plain White T\u2019s vibe going; don\u2019t you think?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes!\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, but we played it much more punk rock than that, back in the day; so\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u2014the song\u2019s grown up with me a little bit.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, did you use music\u2014tell the truth\u2014did you use music to get to go out with Sarah? [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Well, you know, I\u2019ll tell you\u2014I\u2019m actually really glad that, in a way, music did bring us together because I was always a pretty shy guy. I didn\u2019t really do the whole dating thing in high school\u2014I was always so scared.\n\nI remember being just out of high school\u201419 years old\u2014in Columbus, Ohio. We were playing a music festival with Third Day and Audio Adrenaline. We weren\u2019t a signed band yet\u2014we played that early morning slot when nobody was there.\n\n<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\nWe stuck around, and during\u2014I want to say it was during Audio Adrenaline\u2019s show\u2014I remember, on the outskirts of the field in the festival, just seeing this girl who just seemed so carefree. I think something about seeing her freely dancing and laughing, and it was like her smile just captivated me.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Out of how many people?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, I mean, it was probably 5,000 people at this thing, at <em>least<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You spotted her?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, just kind of on the outskirts. I felt this kind of connection\u2014I didn\u2019t say anything\u2014this is Columbus \/ it is two-and-a-half hours from home. I go home that night. The next morning, Sanctus Real was playing a community worship service. Turns out that her parents\u2019 church and her grandmother\u2019s church were part of this, and they drove back to Toledo that night too\u2014her and her brother.\n\nI get up to lead worship; and there she is in my hometown, two-and-a-half hours away. I\u2019m looking at this girl, going, \u201cI cannot believe that she\u2019s here!\u201d\n\n<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\nSo, of course, I didn\u2019t care about my nerves at that point, I was going to\u2014I bee-lined straight to her afterwards \/ I am not letting it go this time. We hung out at her parents\u2019 house; and from that point forward, it was\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you got married, Sarah knew she was marrying a guy whose career was music.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were full-time with this\u2014the band had been on the road for a couple of years. Had you signed a record deal yet?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, we were kind of in the process of being courted by record labels. We kind of made our decision with Sparrow that we were going to be moving forward. So we actually, right after we got married, <em>together<\/em> went on our very first national tour.\n\nYou know, those tours were crazy because, back in the day, a lot of us artists, you have seen now on the ships and out at the music festivals, were all on those tours together. We actually\u2014us, Jeremy Camp, Mercy Me\u2014all did our very first national tour together. I think Toby was out there with his first solo thing that he ever did on tour.\n\n<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\nSo we all went out in this thing\u2014in a van and trailer\u2014with no money for hotels \/ barely enough for gas. I think we paid two of our wives\u2014Sarah and our bass player, at the time \/ his wife\u2014we gave them five bucks to run merchandise for the day. She put up with all of this, even through the first trimester of her first pregnancy.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said she was carefree, and relaxed, and not uptight about any of this.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh yes. Oh yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, I\u2019m thinking that those early years\u2014she probably just went along, and pretty easy-going, no tension\u2014\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; yes. [Laughter] I see where you\u2019re taking me here, Bob. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So when did her personality change?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, yes; man, we had our moments. I remember that was the hardest part about it. I remember it was\u2014I want to say it was my birthday, and we had gotten in this argument. It was one of the worst arguments we\u2019d had up to that point.\n\n<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\nI remember we had nowhere to go to work this out. So we\u2019re sitting in the parking lot of a music festival, in our van, just hashing it out. She\u2019s crying and I\u2019m like: \u201cI cannot believe we\u2019re out here. We just cannot\u2014how do we do this?\u201d You know\u2014no privacy whatsoever. Those were some big lessons, back then\u2014early lessons.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think you could have imagined, and I don\u2019t think most folks realize, the strain that there is on a relationship in doing what God had called you to do in music.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It really is a challenging life for a married couple.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; we\u2019ve seen a lot of marriages struggle through the chaos of travel schedule with artists\u2014and us being one of them. Probably six\/seven years into our marriage was when it really started taking a massive toll on us, relationally.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give them an idea of what\u2019s taking place. I mean, you\u2019re spending 24\/7\u2014\n\n<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes. So I\u2019m gone Thursday through Sunday most of the time\u2014out in the van and trailer in the early days before we had a bus\u2014driving through the night, setting all our stuff up, performing, hanging out with people, then tearing the stuff down. We\u2019re talking four hours, maybe, of good sleep on a night per weekend. She\u2019s home, with the young kids\u2014at that point, they\u2019re just toddlers. She\u2019s like ready to pull her hair out because she\u2019s like: \u201cI don\u2019t have my husband here. He\u2019s gone all weekend, four days in a row.\u201d\n\nBy the time I get home, I\u2019m exhausted \/ she\u2019s exhausted. She\u2019s ready to throw the diapers at my chest\u2014kind of like: \u201cYour turn, buddy!\u201d I\u2019m coming home, like: \u201cOh my! I actually can sleep in my own bed.\u201d What you have here, obviously, are two people who, in essence, are feeling this sense of duty to what we feel called to do. However, we know that it\u2019s taking a pretty <em>massive<\/em> toll on our relationship and our intimacy.\n\n<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\nSo, it was a real struggle.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, and on the road, you\u2019re a rock star.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes. Oh yes.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And at home\u2014\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. So you know, you\u2019re out\u2014and it\u2019s true\u2014because we\u2019re out there, you pull into a town and everybody\u2019s there to serve\u2014right?\u2014and cook you meals. If you\u2019re in a hotel room, it\u2019s always clean. And then you go home\u2014right?\u2014and there\u2019s stuff everywhere, and she\u2019s not wanting to cook anything. You know, it does\u2014it messes with your head. You can get frustrated and think, \u201cWell, what were you doing while I was gone?\u201d\u2014right?\u2014\u201cEverything\u2019s a mess,\u201d\u2014right? You know, you get in that mentality. She goes, \u201cWell, what were you doing while you were gone\u2014sitting around?\u2014doing nothing?\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u201cYou know, you play one night for two hours and what do you do the rest of your day? You get in this tit-for-tat contempt situation, where\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u2014you start to lose sight of the grace.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And a guy in that situation will think, \u201cLet\u2019s see\u2014the last four days, I\u2019ve been everybody\u2019s hero.\u201d\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cI come home and all I get is this.\u201d\n\n<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>You got it\u2014yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cLet\u2019s book a few more days on the road next year because that\u2019s pretty nice to be out there and be admired rather than being home and being the goat.\u201d\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes. When you\u2019re in a position where\u2014whether or not you realize it\u2014because I think a lot of folks, and at times in my life, I didn\u2019t <em>realize<\/em> when you\u2019re in that self-serving\/self-centered young-man mindset. It does not serve you well when it comes to that.\n\nYou\u2019re right because you think: \u201cWell goodness gracious. I come home; and I\u2019m getting this earful about this, that, and the other thing. And I\u2019m already tired.\u201d It does\u2014it takes a toll on you. So, instead of really doing the right thing, which is having the servant leadership mentality, you\u2019re really screwing everything up because it\u2019s exactly the opposite, like you\u2019re talking about.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a wake-up call that came from Sarah, at one point, that led to a transition in how you managed all of this. It also led to a number one song; right?\n\n<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; craziness. So, about seven years ago, my wife sat me down in the midst of all this chaos. Things were\u2014I would have liked to believe things were pretty good between us, but it wasn\u2019t the truth\u2014not for her. So she sits me down at our dining room table. She\u2014I don\u2019t know what it was about that day in particular because, at that point, I think I probably was pretty defensive because of some of the issues we were having. I think the Lord had mercy on me and allowed me to take my guard down and really hear what she was trying to say to my heart.\n\nWhat she said to me was: \u201cI need you to be a better leader to me. You\u2019re here, but you\u2019re not here. If you\u2019re here, I need you here. I need you present, emotionally and spiritually, serving me and the kids.\u201d She just called me\u2014she was like: \u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you opened the Bible with me on a regular basis and led me like you\u2019re supposed to lead me?\n\n<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\n\u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you consistently prayed with me, even over the phone, from the road?\u201d It just hit me so hard.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was she crying?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>She was crying; absolutely. I remember\u2014after that conversation, she got up. I\u2019m not sure what she did, but I literally picked up my guitar. I remember that we had our wedding photo sitting on a table next to us. I looked at her in that photo. I remember seeing her face, and her countenance was so hopeful and innocent. It was such a stark contrast between that and what I saw sitting across from me\u2014that her spirit was actually broken and crushed in so many ways. It <em>devastated<\/em> me. That was the day and the moment that I actually wrote the very first draft of the song, <em>Lead Me<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now I hope you weren\u2019t sitting there, thinking, \u201cOh man, I\u2019m going to get a great song out of this.\u201d\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Well, I didn\u2019t even\u2014here\u2019s the funny part\u2014I wasn\u2019t even going to show it to the guys because it was really personal to me.\n\n<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\nIt was just something for me and my wife to have. Sarah told me\u2014she says: \u201cYou know what? I think that other people need to hear this song.\u201d\n\nI played it for the guys and they thought, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know if it really fits,\u201d because obviously it wasn\u2019t fully developed\u2014it was just a little work tape at the time. But then, the president of our record label, Peter York, got his hands on that song. He said, \u201cThis needs to be heard.\u201d Between him and my wife\u2014that encouragement\u2014we said, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s do it.\u201d\n\nI think once we gathered around the song and finished making it what it is today, we all knew. We were walking out of the writing session with me\u2014I brought out guitar player, Chris Rohmann, and then we were with Jason Ingram. I remember, after writing that song, Jason saying: \u201cGuys, we have to pray right now because I just know that this song is going to impact so many lives. Let\u2019s just pray over it right here, now.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve seen that happen.\n\n<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, man; I still can\u2019t believe the <em>amount<\/em> of feedback that we get as to what this song has sparked in people\u2019s lives.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Men needed it.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely\u2014even artists \/ that\u2019s the crazy thing. You know, there are a lot of artists\u2014we get a little competitive with each other. You don\u2019t want to admit you\u2019re a big fan of another guy\u2014right?\u2014sometimes. I\u2019m not so much like that, but I think a little bit of that exists. But you wouldn\u2019t believe some of the artists who\u2019ve come up to me and said, \u201cHey, man; you know, that song changed my life.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Even just from this cruise. I had one of the guys, even before the performance, say, \u201cHey, I want to let you know that that song really sparked an entire life change in me as a husband and father.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you guys like to hear Matt sing <em>Lead Me<\/em>? [Applause]\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Alright. So, men, maybe this song will speak to your heart like she spoke to mine. Matt is the former lead singer of the group Sanctus Real. This turning point is something Matt remembers very clearly.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>About seven years ago, my wife sat me down in the midst of all this chaos. I would have liked to believe things were pretty good between us, but it wasn\u2019t the truth\u2014not for her. What she said to me was: \u201cI need you to be a better leader to me. You\u2019re here, but you\u2019re not here.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is a special edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, June 24<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. We\u2019ll spend time today catching up with the guy who wrote the hit song <em>Lead Me<\/em> today. We don\u2019t often get a chance to do this, but we happen to have with us for today\u2019s program a live studio audience because we are onboard the 2016 <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. [Applause] Those are some pumped-up people right there; huh?\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think the cruise has been going on for awhile\u2014they\u2019re fresh! [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s always great to have a studio audience, and it\u2019s great to have our guest joining us today.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is. Matt Hammitt joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Matt, welcome back to the broadcast.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>It\u2019s good to be back!\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you guys welcome Matt Hammitt as well? [Applause] So, is your wife joining us on this cruise?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>I wish she was. She actually pulled out a few weeks ago because we\u2019re going to do a conference next week in Greenville. We\u2019re taking the whole family in the RV for two weeks; and she said, \u201cI want to stay home and get the kids ready.\u201d\n\n<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\nShe said, \u201cI\u2019ll be stressed out, you know, if I have to go home and in two days have to get everything ready.\u201d So I actually ended up bringing my dad with me\u2014it\u2019s been awesome.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s cool!\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That is cool.\n\nWell, for those who don\u2019t recognize the name, Matt Hammitt\u2014for a number of years, he was the lead singer in Sanctus Real. You go way back in music. We have to hear how you started your music career.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Were you singing\u2014we found out before we were on microphone here that you didn\u2019t play sports in high school.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>No, no. I think what ended my sports career was that I sat on the bench in soccer in junior high school. My best friend\u2019s dad was the coach. I was like, \u201cI never get to play.\u201d We\u2019re just goofing around the bench; and one of the kids says, \u201cHey man, I really think you should try putting this Icy Hot<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> on your eyelids.\u201d [Laughter] So of course, you know, I give in to this dare. The minute I put it on my eyes, I get called into the game\u2014[Laughter]\u2014like right away! I\u2019m out there, running around with my eyes half swollen shut, tears coming down my face.\n\n<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\nI knew my sports career was over.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>So, thank the Lord that music came on the scene. So I was 16.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>How old were you when you got your first guitar, and what were the circumstances around that?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, that\u2019s a good story because my parents pulled the classic Christmas\u2014all the gifts are done. I\u2019m sitting there, grateful for what I got; but in my heart, wishing I would have gotten the guitar. Then Dad says, \u201cWait a minute, there\u2019s one more,\u201d\u2014you know\u2014and I looked behind the couch. There it is\u2014my very first Samick Strat. I pulled that out with the new little amp they got me. Right away, I knew that I was going to be writing songs\u2014that was what my passion was.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And how old were you?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>At that time, I probably would have been 15 \/ almost 16.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Had you wanted a guitar and music? When did that kind of get birthed inside of you?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019d always loved to sing. I would sing in vocal groups at church, growing up, and played in a band with my brother.\n\n<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\nI really looked up to my brother a lot and thought trumpet wasn\u2019t really my thing either. Then he picked up the acoustic guitar. As soon as I heard him in the house playing it, I knew\u2014that\u2019s, \u201cI want to do that.\u201d I could already hear the little melody in my head, and getting song ideas even before I picked it up. So, it was pretty natural once I had it in my hands.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So you literally started from the very beginning, thinking about writing songs.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, that was it.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right out of the gate!\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, that was it! Man, I was just song ideas all the time.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, could you play for us an early Matt Hammitt song\u2014\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014something you wrote back\u2014that nobody\u2019s ever heard of before, maybe?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Sure; sure. Let me get up on my stool here. So, sitting in my bedroom, I\u2019m 16 years old. I\u2019ve never written a song before, and this was the very first song that I ever wrote. It\u2019s very deep; okay?\n\n[Singing]\n\n<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\nOh, drinking the coffee of life,\n\nSmoking my candy cigarettes.\n\nRuling this world full of man sense\n\nAnd Marilyn\u2019s looking for love,\n\n\u2018Cause they don\u2019t love themselves.\n\nAnd passing by is my life.\n\nDo you see me, the way I am innocent?\n\nWon\u2019t you jump into my couple rocket ship?\n\nI\u2019m going somewhere you\u2019ll never forget,\n\nAnd to my magic time machine I\u2019ll take you\n\nSomewhere you\u2019ll have no regrets.\n\nYou\u2019ll have no regrets.\n\n<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\nI could play the whole thing, but I think that\u2019ll give you a little\u2014\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow; wow! [Laughter \/ applause]\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u2014you get the gist.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, coffee, and candy cigarettes, and rockets\u2014that\u2019s where you were back then?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Super deep. Super deep; yes\u2014super deep.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Has kind of a Plain White T\u2019s vibe going; don\u2019t you think?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes!\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, but we played it much more punk rock than that, back in the day; so\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Did you?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u2014the song\u2019s grown up with me a little bit.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So, did you use music\u2014tell the truth\u2014did you use music to get to go out with Sarah? [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Well, you know, I\u2019ll tell you\u2014I\u2019m actually really glad that, in a way, music did bring us together because I was always a pretty shy guy. I didn\u2019t really do the whole dating thing in high school\u2014I was always so scared.\n\nI remember being just out of high school\u201419 years old\u2014in Columbus, Ohio. We were playing a music festival with Third Day and Audio Adrenaline. We weren\u2019t a signed band yet\u2014we played that early morning slot when nobody was there.\n\n<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\nWe stuck around, and during\u2014I want to say it was during Audio Adrenaline\u2019s show\u2014I remember, on the outskirts of the field in the festival, just seeing this girl who just seemed so carefree. I think something about seeing her freely dancing and laughing, and it was like her smile just captivated me.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Out of how many people?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, I mean, it was probably 5,000 people at this thing, at <em>least<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You spotted her?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, just kind of on the outskirts. I felt this kind of connection\u2014I didn\u2019t say anything\u2014this is Columbus \/ it is two-and-a-half hours from home. I go home that night. The next morning, Sanctus Real was playing a community worship service. Turns out that her parents\u2019 church and her grandmother\u2019s church were part of this, and they drove back to Toledo that night too\u2014her and her brother.\n\nI get up to lead worship; and there she is in my hometown, two-and-a-half hours away. I\u2019m looking at this girl, going, \u201cI cannot believe that she\u2019s here!\u201d\n\n<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\nSo, of course, I didn\u2019t care about my nerves at that point, I was going to\u2014I bee-lined straight to her afterwards \/ I am not letting it go this time. We hung out at her parents\u2019 house; and from that point forward, it was\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>When you got married, Sarah knew she was marrying a guy whose career was music.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You were full-time with this\u2014the band had been on the road for a couple of years. Had you signed a record deal yet?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes, we were kind of in the process of being courted by record labels. We kind of made our decision with Sparrow that we were going to be moving forward. So we actually, right after we got married, <em>together<\/em> went on our very first national tour.\n\nYou know, those tours were crazy because, back in the day, a lot of us artists, you have seen now on the ships and out at the music festivals, were all on those tours together. We actually\u2014us, Jeremy Camp, Mercy Me\u2014all did our very first national tour together. I think Toby was out there with his first solo thing that he ever did on tour.\n\n<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\nSo we all went out in this thing\u2014in a van and trailer\u2014with no money for hotels \/ barely enough for gas. I think we paid two of our wives\u2014Sarah and our bass player, at the time \/ his wife\u2014we gave them five bucks to run merchandise for the day. She put up with all of this, even through the first trimester of her first pregnancy.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said she was carefree, and relaxed, and not uptight about any of this.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh yes. Oh yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, I\u2019m thinking that those early years\u2014she probably just went along, and pretty easy-going, no tension\u2014\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; yes. [Laughter] I see where you\u2019re taking me here, Bob. [Laughter]\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>So when did her personality change?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, yes; man, we had our moments. I remember that was the hardest part about it. I remember it was\u2014I want to say it was my birthday, and we had gotten in this argument. It was one of the worst arguments we\u2019d had up to that point.\n\n<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\nI remember we had nowhere to go to work this out. So we\u2019re sitting in the parking lot of a music festival, in our van, just hashing it out. She\u2019s crying and I\u2019m like: \u201cI cannot believe we\u2019re out here. We just cannot\u2014how do we do this?\u201d You know\u2014no privacy whatsoever. Those were some big lessons, back then\u2014early lessons.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I don\u2019t think you could have imagined, and I don\u2019t think most folks realize, the strain that there is on a relationship in doing what God had called you to do in music.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Absolutely.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It really is a challenging life for a married couple.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; we\u2019ve seen a lot of marriages struggle through the chaos of travel schedule with artists\u2014and us being one of them. Probably six\/seven years into our marriage was when it really started taking a massive toll on us, relationally.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Give them an idea of what\u2019s taking place. I mean, you\u2019re spending 24\/7\u2014\n\n<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes. So I\u2019m gone Thursday through Sunday most of the time\u2014out in the van and trailer in the early days before we had a bus\u2014driving through the night, setting all our stuff up, performing, hanging out with people, then tearing the stuff down. We\u2019re talking four hours, maybe, of good sleep on a night per weekend. She\u2019s home, with the young kids\u2014at that point, they\u2019re just toddlers. She\u2019s like ready to pull her hair out because she\u2019s like: \u201cI don\u2019t have my husband here. He\u2019s gone all weekend, four days in a row.\u201d\n\nBy the time I get home, I\u2019m exhausted \/ she\u2019s exhausted. She\u2019s ready to throw the diapers at my chest\u2014kind of like: \u201cYour turn, buddy!\u201d I\u2019m coming home, like: \u201cOh my! I actually can sleep in my own bed.\u201d What you have here, obviously, are two people who, in essence, are feeling this sense of duty to what we feel called to do. However, we know that it\u2019s taking a pretty <em>massive<\/em> toll on our relationship and our intimacy.\n\n<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\nSo, it was a real struggle.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, and on the road, you\u2019re a rock star.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes. Oh yes.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And at home\u2014\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. So you know, you\u2019re out\u2014and it\u2019s true\u2014because we\u2019re out there, you pull into a town and everybody\u2019s there to serve\u2014right?\u2014and cook you meals. If you\u2019re in a hotel room, it\u2019s always clean. And then you go home\u2014right?\u2014and there\u2019s stuff everywhere, and she\u2019s not wanting to cook anything. You know, it does\u2014it messes with your head. You can get frustrated and think, \u201cWell, what were you doing while I was gone?\u201d\u2014right?\u2014\u201cEverything\u2019s a mess,\u201d\u2014right? You know, you get in that mentality. She goes, \u201cWell, what were you doing while you were gone\u2014sitting around?\u2014doing nothing?\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u201cYou know, you play one night for two hours and what do you do the rest of your day? You get in this tit-for-tat contempt situation, where\u2014\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>\u2014you start to lose sight of the grace.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And a guy in that situation will think, \u201cLet\u2019s see\u2014the last four days, I\u2019ve been everybody\u2019s hero.\u201d\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cI come home and all I get is this.\u201d\n\n<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>You got it\u2014yes.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cLet\u2019s book a few more days on the road next year because that\u2019s pretty nice to be out there and be admired rather than being home and being the goat.\u201d\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes. When you\u2019re in a position where\u2014whether or not you realize it\u2014because I think a lot of folks, and at times in my life, I didn\u2019t <em>realize<\/em> when you\u2019re in that self-serving\/self-centered young-man mindset. It does not serve you well when it comes to that.\n\nYou\u2019re right because you think: \u201cWell goodness gracious. I come home; and I\u2019m getting this earful about this, that, and the other thing. And I\u2019m already tired.\u201d It does\u2014it takes a toll on you. So, instead of really doing the right thing, which is having the servant leadership mentality, you\u2019re really screwing everything up because it\u2019s exactly the opposite, like you\u2019re talking about.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had a wake-up call that came from Sarah, at one point, that led to a transition in how you managed all of this. It also led to a number one song; right?\n\n<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Yes; craziness. So, about seven years ago, my wife sat me down in the midst of all this chaos. Things were\u2014I would have liked to believe things were pretty good between us, but it wasn\u2019t the truth\u2014not for her. So she sits me down at our dining room table. She\u2014I don\u2019t know what it was about that day in particular because, at that point, I think I probably was pretty defensive because of some of the issues we were having. I think the Lord had mercy on me and allowed me to take my guard down and really hear what she was trying to say to my heart.\n\nWhat she said to me was: \u201cI need you to be a better leader to me. You\u2019re here, but you\u2019re not here. If you\u2019re here, I need you here. I need you present, emotionally and spiritually, serving me and the kids.\u201d She just called me\u2014she was like: \u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you opened the Bible with me on a regular basis and led me like you\u2019re supposed to lead me?\n\n<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\n\u201cWhen\u2019s the last time you consistently prayed with me, even over the phone, from the road?\u201d It just hit me so hard.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Was she crying?\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>She was crying; absolutely. I remember\u2014after that conversation, she got up. I\u2019m not sure what she did, but I literally picked up my guitar. I remember that we had our wedding photo sitting on a table next to us. I looked at her in that photo. I remember seeing her face, and her countenance was so hopeful and innocent. It was such a stark contrast between that and what I saw sitting across from me\u2014that her spirit was actually broken and crushed in so many ways. It <em>devastated<\/em> me. That was the day and the moment that I actually wrote the very first draft of the song, <em>Lead Me<\/em>.\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now I hope you weren\u2019t sitting there, thinking, \u201cOh man, I\u2019m going to get a great song out of this.\u201d\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Well, I didn\u2019t even\u2014here\u2019s the funny part\u2014I wasn\u2019t even going to show it to the guys because it was really personal to me.\n\n<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\nIt was just something for me and my wife to have. Sarah told me\u2014she says: \u201cYou know what? I think that other people need to hear this song.\u201d\n\nI played it for the guys and they thought, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know if it really fits,\u201d because obviously it wasn\u2019t fully developed\u2014it was just a little work tape at the time. But then, the president of our record label, Peter York, got his hands on that song. He said, \u201cThis needs to be heard.\u201d Between him and my wife\u2014that encouragement\u2014we said, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s do it.\u201d\n\nI think once we gathered around the song and finished making it what it is today, we all knew. We were walking out of the writing session with me\u2014I brought out guitar player, Chris Rohmann, and then we were with Jason Ingram. I remember, after writing that song, Jason saying: \u201cGuys, we have to pray right now because I just know that this song is going to impact so many lives. Let\u2019s just pray over it right here, now.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve seen that happen.\n\n<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, man; I still can\u2019t believe the <em>amount<\/em> of feedback that we get as to what this song has sparked in people\u2019s lives.\n\n<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Men needed it.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely\u2014even artists \/ that\u2019s the crazy thing. You know, there are a lot of artists\u2014we get a little competitive with each other. You don\u2019t want to admit you\u2019re a big fan of another guy\u2014right?\u2014sometimes. I\u2019m not so much like that, but I think a little bit of that exists. But you wouldn\u2019t believe some of the artists who\u2019ve come up to me and said, \u201cHey, man; you know, that song changed my life.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Even just from this cruise. I had one of the guys, even before the performance, say, \u201cHey, I want to let you know that that song really sparked an entire life change in me as a husband and father.\u201d\n\n<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Would you guys like to hear Matt sing <em>Lead Me<\/em>? [Applause]\n\n<strong>Matt: <\/strong>Alright. So, men, maybe this song will speak to your heart like she spoke to mine.
