You know, all of a sudden, in a moment, our life was turned upside down. We were rushed to what we learned was the #3 hospital in the country. God had really been preparing the way for Katherine to survive, but it was going to be against all odds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, the laws of nature were going to have to be suspended because this rupture she had in her brain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014 for a little context\u2014there were four aneurysms on top of this abnormality. It was catastrophic in nature. They considered just letting her go ahead and die because of the liability and the great resources it would take to even give her a chance at, maybe then, just being in a vegetative state. Even, right afterwards, we didn\u2019t know if she was going to be paralyzed completely, or vegetative, or in a coma. Along the way, God just showed us, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d You know? \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to go all the way back\u2014I want to finish this story a bit later\u2014but I want to go back to how you two met because\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t. .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The cafeteria at Samford University; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; we met at Samford University in Birmingham our freshman year. It was out of a movie, really\u2014because there were sort of the cafeteria tables\u2014and I see this beautiful woman walking across the cafeteria. Literally, I was like, \u201cThis is the most beautiful woman I\u2019ve ever seen in real life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> [Laughing] Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> So then sends everybody from the table\u2014she\u2019s, \u201cOh, can I sit here?\u201d you know?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014then everybody else gets up, and it\u2019s just the two of us. We talked for <em>hours<\/em>; and we were like, \u201cMaybe later we should go on a jog,\u201d\u2014after we\u2019ve eaten like 3,000 calories\u2014\u201cThat might be a good idea!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we did, and that was kind of our first date. During that time, she told me: \u201cYou know, my boyfriend actually plays football for the University of Georgia. Maybe you could come to a game sometime.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was a signal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I was like, \u201cThat was subtle.\u201d [Laughter] But then, he was out of the picture a couple months later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to find out\u2014spiritually, where were you two? Were you on a growth trajectory?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> For Jay, he grew up in a <em>wonderful<\/em> pastor\u2019s home in Montgomery, Alabama\u2014First Baptist, where he\u2019s from\u2014and had had deep truth poured into him his whole life. I don\u2019t think college was necessarily the time for tremendous growth for you, as much as discovery for making your faith your own. I don\u2019t want to speak for you, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s alright. Now, I\u2019ll speak for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> So Katherine had been poured into her whole life as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we were both raised in Christian homes, where parents were together still. Yet, in our own ways, we go to college\u2014I kind of do the stereotypical rebellion\u2014kind of just trying to figure out what I believe:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> \u201cMy faith\u2014 is my faith my own?\u201d You know? And Katherine has been a huge catalyst in my life to this day\u2014now, in different seasons\u2014to have God reveal Himself to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> And likewise\u2014likewise, 1000 percent. The beauty of us coming together was that the Lord obviously knew, as He does in all of our stories, that we would end up together and that He would use everything in our lives\u2014 from our childhoods\u2014 to prepare us for the pain that we would experience when we were 26. We had only been married three years when the bottom fell out for us in our lives, but every truth that had been poured into us \/ every Scripture we knew\u2014how the Lord had really been written on our hearts and in our lives\u2014finally mattered, big time, in that moment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014 for us to recognize: \u201cLike; okay. Now the pedal has hit the metal, and it\u2019s time to <em>apply <\/em>all the truth that we know!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> So I feel like our whole lives were preparation for this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Katherine, you guys got married between the end of undergraduate and the start of law school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us how your husband proposed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Oh, got it! Well, Jay\u2019s father\u2019s the pastor of a church in Alabama. He tricked me into thinking we were going to see some friends at a nearby restaurant down in his hometown for dinner. Our college was a little over an hour north. We came down, and he said he had to run back into the sanctuary to see something. Then I followed him in. To make a long story shorter, he had <em>meticulously<\/em> planned every detail of the next ten minutes, starting with this incredible\u2014I don\u2019t even know what you would call it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Display of pictures from our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Display\u2014display of photographs from our whole lives that he had framed, leading up to the picture of the sanctuary of my church at home in Athens, Georgia, where we would likely get married in. He had given me a Bible with my new name on it\u2014Katherine Wolf\u2014and dropping to one knee, like every good gentleman should, to propose. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He was kind of presumptuous that he put your name on the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I was! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> I think that a lot of it was presumptuous! How did he\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Because you can\u2019t return it once you get it personalized! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I thought that might push her over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> He was hedging his bets, maybe. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You put some time and effort into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; yes. I figured that this was the time to plan and go all out. I might as well!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You do it once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s the idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The move to California was, in part, for you to go to law school at Pepperdine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But it also coincided with opportunities that Katherine had, vocationally, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; Katherine is\u2014you can tell, she\u2019s kind of a wallflower\u2014she\u2019s a little quiet. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019ve always been <em>shy<\/em>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> But she had some opportunities, growing up in theater, and just always kind of drawn to theatrics and the entertainment industry. She was doing some kind of commercial print modeling in the southeast\u2014so then had an opportunity to do that in sort of the big city of LA. God just made it really clear that I was going to go to Pepperdine Law School \/ Katherine was going to maybe seek this entertainment industry\u2014whatever that looked like\u2014as a career. Then He brought it together, you know, so that the timing worked out. That was what really led us to LA together after we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your three law school years were pretty idyllic; weren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely. We lived\u2014so Pepperdine is in Malibu, California\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes!!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> \u2014which is very iconic \u201con the beach.\u201d It is beautiful. So we lived in the married housing dorm, which we always used to say it was like we lived on the beach in Malibu because you could kind of\u2014through the parking lot, you could sort of see the ocean in the distance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just magical, really. We plugged into this great church\u2014that we still go to\u2014to this day\u2014called Bel Air Pres Church in Los Angeles. We just really plugged our lives into it. That was really some of the best advice that we were ever given\u2014 was to jump into a community of Christ\u2019s, early on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you two immediately started teaching a young married class?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; for some reason.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know why they let us teach! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were one step ahead of the hounds!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t make any sense! We do not know why they let us do that, but there was a <em>need<\/em> in this <em>massive<\/em> Sunday school class, as we <em>used<\/em> to call it\u2014they now say Discipleship Group\u2014to have leaders. Here we were, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and 22 years old. We say, \u201cSure, we\u2019ll lead it!\u201d It just kept growing, and growing, and growing\u2014and was just this weird, beautiful, messy picture of the body of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was deeply informing to us about marriage because, here we are\u2014reading books about marriage \/ learning about Christian marriage \/ learning about how to counsel other people in their own marriages and their own marriage problems.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Going to a <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em> <sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, actually, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes, during that same time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> We actually attended a <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em> with that class!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> But what was so cool that the Lord was doing was\u2014we thought we were doing this for everybody else\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that we were really putting in the time when we were so young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> That is so true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> \u201cWe would <em>never <\/em>need marriage counseling. Please!\u201d And here we were\u2014 just a few years out from something that is just like a bomb dropped on your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> We needed all of that good stuff that we had learned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, there wasn\u2019t a bomb dropped on your marriage, but I want to go back to the day when you had the stroke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want you to take us to where you waited\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because you were told it was going to be six to eight hours of surgery. As Katherine has already shared, it went sixteen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I am just wondering what you were thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; sure. I mean, the waiting room is sort of this unique microcosm of the world; right? You know, you have people just all\u2014the common denominator that they are there, unexpectedly \/ the worst moments of their lives, usually. What was profound for me\u2014and what changed it into, really, a holy experience\u2014was to look around that day. It was a Monday. It was noon when we first entered the ER, but I remember seeing familiar faces. I am like: \u201cWait! What?\u201d It was people from our church. They had left what they were doing, in the middle of their day, and they had come just to be with me. You know, word had just spread\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> \u2014 trough Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. You know, this was the time when digital things like Facebook were really just getting accessible for everybody. That night\u2014I remember, you know, there were about 100 people that gathered. It was really\u2014I\u2019ve never experienced church like that in my whole life. We prayed, and cried, and, you know, we read Romans 8 together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cI\u2019ve got to stake my whole life on this. I can\u2019t just read it like some rote thing\u2014like, \u2018Do I believe this?! I\u2019ve got to\u2014with everything I have.\u2019\u201d So, there were moments like that\u2014 that night\u2014that really bolstered me for what lay ahead because it was a complete shift in the trajectory of both of our lives. You know, God was gracious just to give us hope through His people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you thinking, \u201cI\u2019ll probably be a widower,\u201d or were you thinking, \u201cShe\u2019s going to make it.\u201d Are you an optimist or are you a pessimist?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> It\u2019s funny; I\u2019m not. Katherine\u2019s the optimist. I\u2019m probably more of the realist; but then, some of this experience has probably sort of shifted some of that perspective, or at least, brought us both toward the middle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think\u2014you know that I grew up as a pastor\u2019s son in a big church, where dad would have to get up and go to the hospital. You know, he did funerals for kids and just all kinds of suffering was around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for it to be <em>your <\/em>suffering is just a reversal that\u2019s really hard to get your head around. So I think I was really optimistic; but the doctor said: \u201cYou need to know she will likely not survive. This is just the state of affairs.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you were given some grim news.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; it was very grim because\u2014 basically, for this world-renowned neurosurgeon\u2014this was the <em>largest<\/em> of this type of malformation he had ever encountered. It was in the worst place, right by the brain stem, of course. You know, you can\u2019t really mess with the brain stem too much without totally creating havoc. And then, it was bleeding so much that it was herniating her brain. So the odds were very much against any kind of positive outcome, much less the one that ended up happening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> So pretty much, I\u2019m a <em>miracle<\/em>. Cool!! [Laughter] Thank you, Lord! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Literally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I just have to ask: \u201cIs this something that\u2019s genetic? Is this something that\u2019s just an out-of-the-blue thing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s really just an anomaly. It\u2019s not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> No, it\u2019s not anything that they could trace back to heredity or anything. It\u2019s congenital\u2014I was born with it\u2014but I\u2019ve subsequently had a second aneurysm. The first rupture was an AVM, but I\u2019ve actually had an aneurysm I had to have removed several years ago. There is clearly something wrong with my whole vascular system, but that was congenital.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> But you had no symptoms.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Never saw it coming.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes, nothing. We didn\u2019t even know if I had insurance. I didn\u2019t even have a medical doctor when this happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> I mean, nothing!\u2014 perfectly healthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re going to hear more of this story; but in case there\u2019s a listener who, by chance, has never heard the verse in Romans 8 that you have referred to\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014I\u2019ve got to read it\u2014it is verse 28.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Would you rather me quote it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know what? Why don\u2019t you?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> I would <em>love<\/em> to! Romans 8:28 says, \u201cAnd we know in <em>all <\/em>things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.\u201d Do you want me to go on?\u2014because there are some more good ones real quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Keep going, girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Romans 8:31 is such a fabulous verse \/ Romans 8:37\u2014should I quote them all? Do we have time? \u201cWe are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, \/ No one can separate us from the love of God.\u201d Should I actually quote Romans 8:38?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Might as well keep going!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Alright! Well, if we start with: \u201c\u2026If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but freely gave Him up for us all, how will He not also freely give us all things? Who is he that brings any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies; who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus who died, more than that, who was raised to life and is interceding for us.\u201d I could go on and on!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically: \u201cNothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Katherine, you sit there and say that with double vision, in a wheelchair, with a half-paralyzed face, with loss of all kinds of function, and I still hear a joy in your voice that seems to contradict what you just said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes, but isn\u2019t that a picture of all of us? Don\u2019t we all have horrible things on the insides of our bodies?\u2014things we\u2019ve been through\u2014shame, issues, fear, pain, insecurities. And the Lord is saying: \u201cBring the \u2018A\u2019 game! God had really been preparing the way for Katherine to survive, but it was going to be against all odds. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, the laws of nature were going to have to be suspended because this rupture she had in her brain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014 for a little context\u2014there were four aneurysms on top of this abnormality. It was catastrophic in nature. They considered just letting her go ahead and die because of the liability and the great resources it would take to even give her a chance at, maybe then, just being in a vegetative state. Even, right afterwards, we didn\u2019t know if she was going to be paralyzed completely, or vegetative, or in a coma. Along the way, God just showed us, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d You know? \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to go all the way back\u2014I want to finish this story a bit later\u2014but I want to go back to how you two met because\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t. .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The cafeteria at Samford University; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; we met at Samford University in Birmingham our freshman year. It was out of a movie, really\u2014because there were sort of the cafeteria tables\u2014and I see this beautiful woman walking across the cafeteria. Literally, I was like, \u201cThis is the most beautiful woman I\u2019ve ever seen in real life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> [Laughing] Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> So then sends everybody from the table\u2014she\u2019s, \u201cOh, can I sit here?\u201d you know?\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014then everybody else gets up, and it\u2019s just the two of us. We talked for <em>hours<\/em>; and we were like, \u201cMaybe later we should go on a jog,\u201d\u2014after we\u2019ve eaten like 3,000 calories\u2014\u201cThat might be a good idea!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we did, and that was kind of our first date. During that time, she told me: \u201cYou know, my boyfriend actually plays football for the University of Georgia. Maybe you could come to a game sometime.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That was a signal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I was like, \u201cThat was subtle.\u201d [Laughter] But then, he was out of the picture a couple months later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to find out\u2014spiritually, where were you two? Were you on a growth trajectory?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> For Jay, he grew up in a <em>wonderful<\/em> pastor\u2019s home in Montgomery, Alabama\u2014First Baptist, where he\u2019s from\u2014and had had deep truth poured into him his whole life. I don\u2019t think college was necessarily the time for tremendous growth for you, as much as discovery for making your faith your own. I don\u2019t want to speak for you, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s alright. Now, I\u2019ll speak for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> So Katherine had been poured into her whole life as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we were both raised in Christian homes, where parents were together still. Yet, in our own ways, we go to college\u2014I kind of do the stereotypical rebellion\u2014kind of just trying to figure out what I believe:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> \u201cMy faith\u2014 is my faith my own?\u201d You know? And Katherine has been a huge catalyst in my life to this day\u2014now, in different seasons\u2014to have God reveal Himself to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> And likewise\u2014likewise, 1000 percent. The beauty of us coming together was that the Lord obviously knew, as He does in all of our stories, that we would end up together and that He would use everything in our lives\u2014 from our childhoods\u2014 to prepare us for the pain that we would experience when we were 26. We had only been married three years when the bottom fell out for us in our lives, but every truth that had been poured into us \/ every Scripture we knew\u2014how the Lord had really been written on our hearts and in our lives\u2014finally mattered, big time, in that moment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014 for us to recognize: \u201cLike; okay. Now the pedal has hit the metal, and it\u2019s time to <em>apply <\/em>all the truth that we know!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> So I feel like our whole lives were preparation for this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Katherine, you guys got married between the end of undergraduate and the start of law school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us how your husband proposed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Oh, got it! Well, Jay\u2019s father\u2019s the pastor of a church in Alabama. He tricked me into thinking we were going to see some friends at a nearby restaurant down in his hometown for dinner. Our college was a little over an hour north. We came down, and he said he had to run back into the sanctuary to see something. Then I followed him in. To make a long story shorter, he had <em>meticulously<\/em> planned every detail of the next ten minutes, starting with this incredible\u2014I don\u2019t even know what you would call it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Display of pictures from our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Display\u2014display of photographs from our whole lives that he had framed, leading up to the picture of the sanctuary of my church at home in Athens, Georgia, where we would likely get married in. He had given me a Bible with my new name on it\u2014Katherine Wolf\u2014and dropping to one knee, like every good gentleman should, to propose. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He was kind of presumptuous that he put your name on the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I was! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> I think that a lot of it was presumptuous! How did he\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Because you can\u2019t return it once you get it personalized! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I thought that might push her over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> He was hedging his bets, maybe. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You put some time and effort into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; yes. I figured that this was the time to plan and go all out. I might as well!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You do it once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; that\u2019s the idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The move to California was, in part, for you to go to law school at Pepperdine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But it also coincided with opportunities that Katherine had, vocationally, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; Katherine is\u2014you can tell, she\u2019s kind of a wallflower\u2014she\u2019s a little quiet. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes; I\u2019ve always been <em>shy<\/em>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> But she had some opportunities, growing up in theater, and just always kind of drawn to theatrics and the entertainment industry. She was doing some kind of commercial print modeling in the southeast\u2014so then had an opportunity to do that in sort of the big city of LA. God just made it really clear that I was going to go to Pepperdine Law School \/ Katherine was going to maybe seek this entertainment industry\u2014whatever that looked like\u2014as a career. Then He brought it together, you know, so that the timing worked out. That was what really led us to LA together after we got married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your three law school years were pretty idyllic; weren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; absolutely. We lived\u2014so Pepperdine is in Malibu, California\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes!!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> \u2014which is very iconic \u201con the beach.\u201d It is beautiful. So we lived in the married housing dorm, which we always used to say it was like we lived on the beach in Malibu because you could kind of\u2014through the parking lot, you could sort of see the ocean in the distance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just magical, really. We plugged into this great church\u2014that we still go to\u2014to this day\u2014called Bel Air Pres Church in Los Angeles. We just really plugged our lives into it. That was really some of the best advice that we were ever given\u2014 was to jump into a community of Christ\u2019s, early on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you two immediately started teaching a young married class?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; for some reason.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know why they let us teach! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were one step ahead of the hounds!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t make any sense! We do not know why they let us do that, but there was a <em>need<\/em> in this <em>massive<\/em> Sunday school class, as we <em>used<\/em> to call it\u2014they now say Discipleship Group\u2014to have leaders. Here we were, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and 22 years old. We say, \u201cSure, we\u2019ll lead it!\u201d It just kept growing, and growing, and growing\u2014and was just this weird, beautiful, messy picture of the body of Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was deeply informing to us about marriage because, here we are\u2014reading books about marriage \/ learning about Christian marriage \/ learning about how to counsel other people in their own marriages and their own marriage problems.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Going to a <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em> <sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, actually, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes, during that same time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> We actually attended a <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em> with that class!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> But what was so cool that the Lord was doing was\u2014we thought we were doing this for everybody else\u2014[Laughter]\u2014that we were really putting in the time when we were so young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> That is so true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> \u201cWe would <em>never <\/em>need marriage counseling. Please!\u201d And here we were\u2014 just a few years out from something that is just like a bomb dropped on your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> We needed all of that good stuff that we had learned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, there wasn\u2019t a bomb dropped on your marriage, but I want to go back to the day when you had the stroke.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want you to take us to where you waited\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because you were told it was going to be six to eight hours of surgery. As Katherine has already shared, it went sixteen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I am just wondering what you were thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; sure. I mean, the waiting room is sort of this unique microcosm of the world; right? You know, you have people just all\u2014the common denominator that they are there, unexpectedly \/ the worst moments of their lives, usually. What was profound for me\u2014and what changed it into, really, a holy experience\u2014was to look around that day. It was a Monday. It was noon when we first entered the ER, but I remember seeing familiar faces. I am like: \u201cWait! What?\u201d It was people from our church. They had left what they were doing, in the middle of their day, and they had come just to be with me. You know, word had just spread\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> \u2014 trough Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. You know, this was the time when digital things like Facebook were really just getting accessible for everybody. That night\u2014I remember, you know, there were about 100 people that gathered. It was really\u2014I\u2019ve never experienced church like that in my whole life. We prayed, and cried, and, you know, we read Romans 8 together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cI\u2019ve got to stake my whole life on this. I can\u2019t just read it like some rote thing\u2014like, \u2018Do I believe this?! I\u2019ve got to\u2014with everything I have.\u2019\u201d So, there were moments like that\u2014 that night\u2014that really bolstered me for what lay ahead because it was a complete shift in the trajectory of both of our lives. You know, God was gracious just to give us hope through His people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you thinking, \u201cI\u2019ll probably be a widower,\u201d or were you thinking, \u201cShe\u2019s going to make it.\u201d Are you an optimist or are you a pessimist?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> It\u2019s funny; I\u2019m not. Katherine\u2019s the optimist. I\u2019m probably more of the realist; but then, some of this experience has probably sort of shifted some of that perspective, or at least, brought us both toward the middle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think\u2014you know that I grew up as a pastor\u2019s son in a big church, where dad would have to get up and go to the hospital. You know, he did funerals for kids and just all kinds of suffering was around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for it to be <em>your <\/em>suffering is just a reversal that\u2019s really hard to get your head around. So I think I was really optimistic; but the doctor said: \u201cYou need to know she will likely not survive. This is just the state of affairs.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you were given some grim news.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes; it was very grim because\u2014 basically, for this world-renowned neurosurgeon\u2014this was the <em>largest<\/em> of this type of malformation he had ever encountered. It was in the worst place, right by the brain stem, of course. You know, you can\u2019t really mess with the brain stem too much without totally creating havoc. And then, it was bleeding so much that it was herniating her brain. So the odds were very much against any kind of positive outcome, much less the one that ended up happening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> So pretty much, I\u2019m a <em>miracle<\/em>. Cool!! [Laughter] Thank you, Lord! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Literally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I just have to ask: \u201cIs this something that\u2019s genetic? Is this something that\u2019s just an out-of-the-blue thing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Yes, it\u2019s really just an anomaly. It\u2019s not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> No, it\u2019s not anything that they could trace back to heredity or anything. It\u2019s congenital\u2014I was born with it\u2014but I\u2019ve subsequently had a second aneurysm. The first rupture was an AVM, but I\u2019ve actually had an aneurysm I had to have removed several years ago. We didn\u2019t even know if I had insurance. Romans 8:28 says, \u201cAnd we know in <em>all <\/em>things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.\u201d Do you want me to go on?\u2014because there are some more good ones real quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jay:<\/strong> Keep going, girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Romans 8:31 is such a fabulous verse \/ Romans 8:37\u2014should I quote them all? Do we have time? \u201cWe are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, \/ No one can separate us from the love of God.\u201d Should I actually quote Romans 8:38?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Might as well keep going!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Alright! Well, if we start with: \u201c\u2026If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but freely gave Him up for us all, how will He not also freely give us all things? Who is he that brings any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies; who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus who died, more than that, who was raised to life and is interceding for us.\u201d I could go on and on!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically: \u201cNothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Katherine, you sit there and say that with double vision, in a wheelchair, with a half-paralyzed face, with loss of all kinds of function, and I still hear a joy in your voice that seems to contradict what you just said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katherine:<\/strong> Yes, but isn\u2019t that a picture of all of us? Don\u2019t we all have horrible things on the insides of our bodies?\u2014things we\u2019ve been through\u2014shame, issues, fear, pain, insecurities. And the Lord is saying: \u201cBring the \u2018A\u2019 game!
