The reason the bloody gospel is important is because of sin. Without the proclamation of sinful man, there is no proclamation of a gracious God and a grace-centered gospel. All of these things are important. Have you ever been to a four-hour seminar that got jammed into about an hour? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I wondered how you were going to start this broadcast because I thought you were going to ask me, \u201cHave you ever been on a jet sled, where you go from 0 to 400 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds,\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right off the bat!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and leaves your face back at the starting line?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re going to hear today from Voddie Baucham.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, we don\u2019t get a chance to hear from Voddie as often as we used to because Voddie and his family recently\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they left Houston, Texas, where the family had lived for years, and they have moved to Africa. Voddie gives leadership to a seminary, training pastors in biblical theology on the continent of Africa. It\u2019s really cool what he\u2019s doing; but it means that we don\u2019t get to talk to him as often as we used to talk to him, except when we get updates on what\u2019s going on with his work in Africa. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe did get a chance to hear from him not long ago. We were with a group of guys, and he was talking about our responsibilities, as husbands and as dads, to give spiritual leadership in our homes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014you\u2019re right\u2014it was four hours of content in about 60 minutes. It was wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. It was just what these guys said they needed\u2014the right instruction to re-calibrate what they\u2019re doing, as husbands and as dads. Here\u2019s Part One of a message from Voddie Baucham on spiritual leadership.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>Well good morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Good morning!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>Oh, that sounded good! [Laughter] Yes, I like that. Alright; my assignment this morning was rather broad. It was to speak about the issue of biblical manhood. But what I want to do today is talk about this issue of discipleship\u2014this issue of preparing men for their most important and most significant role. That role is the role of shepherding their families\u2014the role of being a man, in a context.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the reasons that question was so difficult to answer was because there was no context. You have to have context. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible paints pictures of us \/ of manhood within context. Again, that\u2019s something that is difficult for us because we always hear, \u201cYou need to be a leader.\u201d We go: \u201cYes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Yes! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>\u201cLet\u2019s do that! Where are we going?\u201d You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, listen to this, first of all\u2014this is from Richard Baxter: <em>\u201c<\/em>We must have a special eye upon families to see that they are well-ordered and that the duties of each relation performed. The life of religion and the welfare and glory of both the church and the state depend much on family government and duty. I beseech you, therefore, if you desire the reformation and welfare of your people, do all you can to promote family religion.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is Richard Baxter talking to a group of pastors. He\u2019s saying, \u201cIf you want to see revival, if you want to see your churches transformed, if you want to see your communities transformed, I beseech you, do everything you can to promote family religion.\u201d In other words, to promote the idea of households functioning the way they\u2019re supposed to function; and specifically, of fathers leading households to function the way they\u2019re supposed to function.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe know we have a call to prepare men. The question is: \u201cTo prepare men for what?\u201d Here\u2019s a little illustration I like to use. You don\u2019t train to wear this uniform. By the way, I don\u2019t care what branch of the service you served in. Everybody knows\u2014that\u2019s the <em>baddest<\/em> uniform in the whole military\u2014right there! [Laughter] I mean, it just really is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you don\u2019t train to wear that uniform\u2014you do not train to wear that uniform. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, here\u2019s my problem with much of what we\u2019ve been talking about in men\u2019s ministry over the last two decades. We\u2019re basically training men to wear this uniform. We\u2019re basically training men to go to stadium events, training men to get together and enjoy being together, or training men to maybe get together in an accountability group or whatever. Ultimately, we look at these warriors and we\u2019ve said to these warriors: \u201cYou don\u2019t look good in your dress uniform. Dress up. Look good in your dress uniform.\u201d But we leave men, sort of standing there, looking better, but having no hill on which to die. We don\u2019t train to wear this uniform. We train to go fight! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the problem is\u2014nobody has told men\u2014in the last couple of decades, really\u2014where they\u2019re supposed to go fight. Yes: \u201cDon\u2019t commit adultery,\u201d \u201cIf you\u2019re not married, don\u2019t fornicate,\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201cDon\u2019t do\u2026.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got all that stuff\u2014you know: \u201cHave your quiet time,\u201d so on and so forth\u2014but where is the hill on which to die? Where is your battle station? I want to tell you that, whoever you are, you have a battle station in your home\u2014whoever you are, as a man. I believe that is the hill on which to die. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy is this need so urgent? First, because of obvious cultural degeneration\u2014our culture has degenerated. We don\u2019t understand what manhood is. Really, we measure manhood by the three \u201cB\u2019s\u201d: the ball field, the billfold, and the bedroom. That\u2019s how we measure manhood\u2014the ball field, the billfold, and the bedroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen men get together\u2014again, men, apart from Christ, or men, who are in Christ\u2014when they get together, very quickly, we want to know: \u201cWhat do you do? What kind of money do you make?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the billfold. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat did you play?\u201d Men are always asking each other: \u201cWhat did you play? Did you play ball? What position did you play? How far did you get?\u201d because that\u2019s how we measure manhood. And then, of course, the bedroom\u2014you know? \u201cWhat kind of woman do you have? What kind of women have you had?\u201d That\u2019s how we measure manhood in our culture. Men, if we don\u2019t fill that void with anything else, that\u2019s how our sons are going to measure manhood because it\u2019s the only measures that they\u2019ve got\u2014the billfold, the ball field, the bedroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEcclesiological confusion\u2014this is confusion within the context and confines of church. We have sort of <em>feminized<\/em> our understanding of the church. We have <em>feminized <\/em>our understanding of the ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve <em>feminized<\/em> our understanding of our mission. In this confusion, it\u2019s really hard for men to find their place in the context and confines of church. Even being part of the church \/ serving in the church has a very feminine connotation because there aren\u2019t many places\u2014unless you\u2019re serving in pastoral ministry\u2014and that\u2019s not even as masculine as it was before. Now, the way we define pastors\u2014I mean, pastors aren\u2019t <em>bold lions<\/em>, proclaiming the gospel, and standing up against error, and calling things. That\u2019s not what they are; you know? Now, pastors are these sort of self-help gurus. We\u2019ve got guys, standing up in the pulpit, with skinny jeans and their mama\u2019s haircut. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] I mean\u2014you know\u2014that ain\u2019t right, man! I\u2019m just saying; you know? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe need for assimilation\u2014this is urgent because of the need for assimilation. We have men, who come into the fold\u2014we have men, who are born again. These men, who are born again, come to faith in Christ. The question is: \u201cGreat! What now? What do I do?\u201d There are many men in this room\u2014a lot of the stuff that we\u2019re going to talk about that is the responsibility of a Christian man\u2014that 150 years ago would have been <em>completely<\/em> understood\u2014now, most of you have never seen it. You certainly didn\u2019t grow up with it. So, there\u2019s the need for assimilation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen to this from James Alexander in his book, <em>Thoughts on Family Worship: <\/em>\u201cThere is no member of a household whose individual piety is of such importance to all the rest as the father or head, and there is no one whose soul is so directly influenced by the exercise of domestic worship. Where the head of a family is lukewarm or worldly, he will send the chill through the whole house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf any happy exception occurs, and one and another surpass him in faithfulness, it will be <em>in spite<\/em> of his evil example.\u201d There\u2019s no one more significant\u2014no one more significant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother\u2014Oliver Hayward: \u201cI know not how a minister can employ his time, studies, and pen better, next to the conviction and conversion of particular souls, than in pressing upon householders\u201d\u2014or fathers\u2014\u201ca care of the souls under their charge. This hath direct tendency to public reformation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the local church\u2014let\u2019s talk about that because this is the place that God designed for this kind of discipleship to happen. The local church is \u201cPlan A\u201d\u2014period. It\u2019s just \u201cPlan.\u201d It\u2019s not even \u201cPlan A\u201d, it\u2019s just \u201cThe Plan.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmen? The local church is the plan. It\u2019s a training ground for family shepherds. There\u2019s this Titus Triangle, if you will. The three points of the triangle are\u2014number one, godly, older men in the church. Not just <em>older<\/em>\u2014you can be older and not godly; amen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience<\/strong>: Amen; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>There are some men, who don\u2019t live like they used to live because God has changed them. There are other men, who don\u2019t live like they used to live because they just got too old. If you can\u2019t say, \u201cAmen,\u201d you ought to say, \u201cOuch!\u201d\u2014right? [Laughter] There\u2019s a difference between those two; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: Godly, manly elders\u2014godly, manly elders. I believe the leadership of a church is<em> clearly<\/em> designed for men\u2014<em>clearly<\/em> designed for men. If that offends you, I\u2019m not sorry.[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod designed the office\u2014of elder, bishop, pastor, overseer\u2014for men\u2014<em>exclusively<\/em> for men \/ expressly and clearly for men; okay? He leaves no doubt whatsoever in both Titus and in Timothy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, thirdly: Biblically-functioning homes. Here\u2019s what happens\u2014and, again, we are talking about men; but this is also true for women as well\u2014a baby boy comes into the world and is born into this Christian family. In this Christian family\u2014it functions in a biblical manner. He sees, and he hears, and is instructed in the things of God, within the context of that home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, one of the things he does, in the context of that biblically-functioning home, is that he attends a biblically-functioning church, with his family, where he sees these godly, mature, gray-headed men, who\u2019ve been walking with God for a long time\u2014who are reiterating the same thing that he is hearing in his home, and who are serving as mentors for his father, who is teaching him these things in his home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, week by week, he sits under the teaching and preaching of a godly, manly elder, who is <em>thundering<\/em> the Word of God and echoing the very same things he is hearing from those other two sides of the triangle. This is the Titus Triangle. This is how long-term, overarching, full-orbed, holistic discipleship is designed to take place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFour key areas\u2014let me give these four key areas: family discipleship and evangelism, marriage enrichment, child training, and lifestyle evaluation. Now, there could be more, and we could talk about more; but I\u2019ll just give you the low-down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s look at the first one\u2014family evangelism and discipleship. George Whitfield: \u201cEvery governor of a family ought to look upon himself as obliged to act in three capacities: as a prophet to instruct, as a priest to pray for and with, and as king to govern, direct, and provide for them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does a man need to know in order to function in this particular area? He needs to understand the gospel, he needs to understand evangelism, and he needs to understand discipleship. Every man needs these three things if he\u2019s going to function in this area of family evangelism and discipleship. If he\u2019s going to be an agent of evangelism and discipleship in his home, he\u2019s got to understand the gospel, he\u2019s got to understand evangelism, and he\u2019s got to understand discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we talk about the gospel, he has to understand what the gospel is <em>not<\/em>. That\u2019s just as important\u2014understanding what the gospel is <em>not <\/em>is just as important as understanding what the gospel <em>is.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe gospel, for example, is <em>not<\/em> the Law. Amen! The gospel is not the Law. The gospel is <em>not <\/em>all the moral teachings of Jesus; right? You know, how many of you have heard this new mantra: \u201cLove God; love people\u201d? It\u2019s usually, \u201cLove God; love people,\u201d and then, another tag line: \u201cLove God, love people, and change the world,\u201d \u201cLove God, love people, reach the city,\u201d \u201cLove God, love people, da-da-da-da-da.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the great irony\u2014is that idea of \u201cLove God; love people,\u201d\u2014you know, \u201cThat\u2019s who we are about, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re about,\u201d\u2014oftentimes it accompanies the ideathat: \u201cWe\u2019re not about rules. We\u2019re not about Law\u2014we are not about the Law. We\u2019re just about loving God and loving people.\u201d Here\u2019s the great irony\u2014\u201cLove God; love people,\u201d is basically a summary of Jesus, in Matthew 22, being asked about the Great Commandment; right? \u201cWhat\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLiterally, here\u2019s the question because there was an argument about which commandment was the greatest commandment. There was one school of thought that said the first commandment was the greatest commandment and all the others come under that umbrella. Some would have argued that the fifth commandment was the greatest commandment because it was a bridge between the two tables of the Law. Others would have argued that the tenth commandment was the greatest commandment because, ultimately, coveting is the root of all the rest of your sins. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he asked Jesus, \u201cWhich one?\u201d They were trying to put him in one of these camps: \u201cJesus, what\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d You know His answer\u2014He says, basically, the \u201cLove God\u201d part of \u201cLove God; love people,\u201d\u2014He said, \u201cLove the Lord, your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.\u201d He said, \u201cThat\u2019s the first and greatest commandment.\u201d By the way, that\u2019s a summary of the first table of the Law\u2014commandments one through four. Then, He says, \u201cThe second is like it\u2014love your neighbor as yourself.\u201d That\u2019s the summary of the second table of the Law. So: \u201cJesus, what\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to have to say, one through four, followed closely by five through ten.\u201d[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the great irony\u2014\u201cLove God; love people,\u201d\u2014that is not the gospel\u2014it\u2019s actually a summary of the Law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s the opposite of the gospel. I\u2019m not saying we can\u2019t use <em>that<\/em>\u2014just know what it is. It\u2019s the summary of <em>the Law<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s not the gospel. It\u2019s not the gospel; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat <em>is <\/em>the gospel? The gospel is the <em>good news<\/em>. It is the <em>good news<\/em> of what God has done through the person and work of Jesus Christ to redeem lost and sinful men through His death, burial, and resurrection as a substitutionary, vicarious death that satisfies the righteous wrath of a holy God on behalf of sinners who can be saved and forgiven no other way. That\u2019s what the gospel is; okay? It\u2019s really simple. That\u2019s what the gospel is\u2014it\u2019s something we proclaim!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat the gospel requires\u2014what does the gospel require? The gospel requires repentance and faith. That\u2019s it! The gospel requires repentance and faith\u2014period! The gospel requires repentance and faith. \u201cWell, you can\u2019t just live any way you want to live. There\u2019s got to be some obedience in there!\u201d Yes; that\u2019s what the gospel <em>produces<\/em>. If you confuse what the gospel produces and what the gospel requires, you end up in works righteousness because, now, you\u2019re trying to accomplish, in and of yourself, that which <em>only <\/em>God accomplishes through the gospel. Again, you\u2019re off the reservation if you don\u2019t get this. If a man is going to lead in family evangelism and discipleship, he has <em>got<\/em> to understand these things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we have been listening today to the first part of a message from Voddie Baucham\u2014a message where he was challenging men on the subject of spiritual leadership. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know how many of the guys, who came in that day, had been thinking about the relationship between the gospel and their marriage or the gospel and their family; but they got it before they left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They did; and I don\u2019t want the men to miss the statement: \u201cYou should be prepared for battle.\u201d That\u2019s what Voddie was talking to you about. The battle begins for your marriage and your family. If you\u2019re a single guy, it begins by battling for the moral purity and innocence of a young lady you may be dating. If you\u2019re newly-married, it means you\u2019ve got to set a course, spiritually, for you and your wife. If you have children, it means the all-important spiritual leadership that disciples your kids to, first of all, come to know Jesus Christ as Savior, Master, and Lord; but then, secondly, to raise them to be Christ-followers their entire lives. Men need to <em>man<\/em> the battle station of the home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I noticed a lot of guys, who were scribbling notes as fast as they could as Voddie was speaking. The reason the bloody gospel is important is because of sin. Without the proclamation of sinful man, there is no proclamation of a gracious God and a grace-centered gospel. All of these things are important. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I wondered how you were going to start this broadcast because I thought you were going to ask me, \u201cHave you ever been on a jet sled, where you go from 0 to 400 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds,\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right off the bat!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and leaves your face back at the starting line?\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re going to hear today from Voddie Baucham.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You know, we don\u2019t get a chance to hear from Voddie as often as we used to because Voddie and his family recently\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014they left Houston, Texas, where the family had lived for years, and they have moved to Africa. Voddie gives leadership to a seminary, training pastors in biblical theology on the continent of Africa. It\u2019s really cool what he\u2019s doing; but it means that we don\u2019t get to talk to him as often as we used to talk to him, except when we get updates on what\u2019s going on with his work in Africa. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe did get a chance to hear from him not long ago. We were with a group of guys, and he was talking about our responsibilities, as husbands and as dads, to give spiritual leadership in our homes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to tell you\u2014you\u2019re right\u2014it was four hours of content in about 60 minutes. It was wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; exactly. It was just what these guys said they needed\u2014the right instruction to re-calibrate what they\u2019re doing, as husbands and as dads. Here\u2019s Part One of a message from Voddie Baucham on spiritual leadership.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>Well good morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Good morning!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>Oh, that sounded good! [Laughter] Yes, I like that. Alright; my assignment this morning was rather broad. It was to speak about the issue of biblical manhood. But what I want to do today is talk about this issue of discipleship\u2014this issue of preparing men for their most important and most significant role. That role is the role of shepherding their families\u2014the role of being a man, in a context.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the reasons that question was so difficult to answer was because there was no context. You have to have context. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible paints pictures of us \/ of manhood within context. Again, that\u2019s something that is difficult for us because we always hear, \u201cYou need to be a leader.\u201d We go: \u201cYes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience: <\/strong>Yes! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>\u201cLet\u2019s do that! Where are we going?\u201d You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, listen to this, first of all\u2014this is from Richard Baxter: <em>\u201c<\/em>We must have a special eye upon families to see that they are well-ordered and that the duties of each relation performed. The life of religion and the welfare and glory of both the church and the state depend much on family government and duty. I beseech you, therefore, if you desire the reformation and welfare of your people, do all you can to promote family religion.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is Richard Baxter talking to a group of pastors. He\u2019s saying, \u201cIf you want to see revival, if you want to see your churches transformed, if you want to see your communities transformed, I beseech you, do everything you can to promote family religion.\u201d In other words, to promote the idea of households functioning the way they\u2019re supposed to function; and specifically, of fathers leading households to function the way they\u2019re supposed to function.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe know we have a call to prepare men. The question is: \u201cTo prepare men for what?\u201d Here\u2019s a little illustration I like to use. You don\u2019t train to wear this uniform. By the way, I don\u2019t care what branch of the service you served in. Everybody knows\u2014that\u2019s the <em>baddest<\/em> uniform in the whole military\u2014right there! [Laughter] I mean, it just really is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you don\u2019t train to wear that uniform\u2014you do not train to wear that uniform. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, here\u2019s my problem with much of what we\u2019ve been talking about in men\u2019s ministry over the last two decades. We\u2019re basically training men to wear this uniform. We\u2019re basically training men to go to stadium events, training men to get together and enjoy being together, or training men to maybe get together in an accountability group or whatever. Ultimately, we look at these warriors and we\u2019ve said to these warriors: \u201cYou don\u2019t look good in your dress uniform. Dress up. Look good in your dress uniform.\u201d But we leave men, sort of standing there, looking better, but having no hill on which to die. We don\u2019t train to wear this uniform. We train to go fight! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the problem is\u2014nobody has told men\u2014in the last couple of decades, really\u2014where they\u2019re supposed to go fight. Yes: \u201cDon\u2019t commit adultery,\u201d \u201cIf you\u2019re not married, don\u2019t fornicate,\u201d\u2014you know\u2014\u201cDon\u2019t do\u2026.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got all that stuff\u2014you know: \u201cHave your quiet time,\u201d so on and so forth\u2014but where is the hill on which to die? Where is your battle station? I want to tell you that, whoever you are, you have a battle station in your home\u2014whoever you are, as a man. I believe that is the hill on which to die. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy is this need so urgent? First, because of obvious cultural degeneration\u2014our culture has degenerated. We don\u2019t understand what manhood is. Really, we measure manhood by the three \u201cB\u2019s\u201d: the ball field, the billfold, and the bedroom. That\u2019s how we measure manhood\u2014the ball field, the billfold, and the bedroom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen men get together\u2014again, men, apart from Christ, or men, who are in Christ\u2014when they get together, very quickly, we want to know: \u201cWhat do you do? What kind of money do you make?\u201d\u2014that\u2019s the billfold. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat did you play?\u201d Men are always asking each other: \u201cWhat did you play? Did you play ball? What position did you play? How far did you get?\u201d because that\u2019s how we measure manhood. And then, of course, the bedroom\u2014you know? \u201cWhat kind of woman do you have? What kind of women have you had?\u201d That\u2019s how we measure manhood in our culture. Men, if we don\u2019t fill that void with anything else, that\u2019s how our sons are going to measure manhood because it\u2019s the only measures that they\u2019ve got\u2014the billfold, the ball field, the bedroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEcclesiological confusion\u2014this is confusion within the context and confines of church. We have sort of <em>feminized<\/em> our understanding of the church. We have <em>feminized <\/em>our understanding of the ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve <em>feminized<\/em> our understanding of our mission. In this confusion, it\u2019s really hard for men to find their place in the context and confines of church. Even being part of the church \/ serving in the church has a very feminine connotation because there aren\u2019t many places\u2014unless you\u2019re serving in pastoral ministry\u2014and that\u2019s not even as masculine as it was before. Now, the way we define pastors\u2014I mean, pastors aren\u2019t <em>bold lions<\/em>, proclaiming the gospel, and standing up against error, and calling things. That\u2019s not what they are; you know? Now, pastors are these sort of self-help gurus. We\u2019ve got guys, standing up in the pulpit, with skinny jeans and their mama\u2019s haircut. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] I mean\u2014you know\u2014that ain\u2019t right, man! I\u2019m just saying; you know? [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe need for assimilation\u2014this is urgent because of the need for assimilation. We have men, who come into the fold\u2014we have men, who are born again. These men, who are born again, come to faith in Christ. The question is: \u201cGreat! What now? What do I do?\u201d There are many men in this room\u2014a lot of the stuff that we\u2019re going to talk about that is the responsibility of a Christian man\u2014that 150 years ago would have been <em>completely<\/em> understood\u2014now, most of you have never seen it. You certainly didn\u2019t grow up with it. So, there\u2019s the need for assimilation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen to this from James Alexander in his book, <em>Thoughts on Family Worship: <\/em>\u201cThere is no member of a household whose individual piety is of such importance to all the rest as the father or head, and there is no one whose soul is so directly influenced by the exercise of domestic worship. Where the head of a family is lukewarm or worldly, he will send the chill through the whole house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf any happy exception occurs, and one and another surpass him in faithfulness, it will be <em>in spite<\/em> of his evil example.\u201d There\u2019s no one more significant\u2014no one more significant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother\u2014Oliver Hayward: \u201cI know not how a minister can employ his time, studies, and pen better, next to the conviction and conversion of particular souls, than in pressing upon householders\u201d\u2014or fathers\u2014\u201ca care of the souls under their charge. This hath direct tendency to public reformation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the local church\u2014let\u2019s talk about that because this is the place that God designed for this kind of discipleship to happen. The local church is \u201cPlan A\u201d\u2014period. It\u2019s just \u201cPlan.\u201d It\u2019s not even \u201cPlan A\u201d, it\u2019s just \u201cThe Plan.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmen? The local church is the plan. It\u2019s a training ground for family shepherds. There\u2019s this Titus Triangle, if you will. The three points of the triangle are\u2014number one, godly, older men in the church. Not just <em>older<\/em>\u2014you can be older and not godly; amen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience<\/strong>: Amen; yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie: <\/strong>There are some men, who don\u2019t live like they used to live because God has changed them. There are other men, who don\u2019t live like they used to live because they just got too old. If you can\u2019t say, \u201cAmen,\u201d you ought to say, \u201cOuch!\u201d\u2014right? [Laughter] There\u2019s a difference between those two; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly: Godly, manly elders\u2014godly, manly elders. I believe the leadership of a church is<em> clearly<\/em> designed for men\u2014<em>clearly<\/em> designed for men. If that offends you, I\u2019m not sorry.[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod designed the office\u2014of elder, bishop, pastor, overseer\u2014for men\u2014<em>exclusively<\/em> for men \/ expressly and clearly for men; okay? He leaves no doubt whatsoever in both Titus and in Timothy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, thirdly: Biblically-functioning homes. Here\u2019s what happens\u2014and, again, we are talking about men; but this is also true for women as well\u2014a baby boy comes into the world and is born into this Christian family. In this Christian family\u2014it functions in a biblical manner. He sees, and he hears, and is instructed in the things of God, within the context of that home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, one of the things he does, in the context of that biblically-functioning home, is that he attends a biblically-functioning church, with his family, where he sees these godly, mature, gray-headed men, who\u2019ve been walking with God for a long time\u2014who are reiterating the same thing that he is hearing in his home, and who are serving as mentors for his father, who is teaching him these things in his home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, week by week, he sits under the teaching and preaching of a godly, manly elder, who is <em>thundering<\/em> the Word of God and echoing the very same things he is hearing from those other two sides of the triangle. This is the Titus Triangle. This is how long-term, overarching, full-orbed, holistic discipleship is designed to take place. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFour key areas\u2014let me give these four key areas: family discipleship and evangelism, marriage enrichment, child training, and lifestyle evaluation. Now, there could be more, and we could talk about more; but I\u2019ll just give you the low-down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s look at the first one\u2014family evangelism and discipleship. George Whitfield: \u201cEvery governor of a family ought to look upon himself as obliged to act in three capacities: as a prophet to instruct, as a priest to pray for and with, and as king to govern, direct, and provide for them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does a man need to know in order to function in this particular area? He needs to understand the gospel, he needs to understand evangelism, and he needs to understand discipleship. Every man needs these three things if he\u2019s going to function in this area of family evangelism and discipleship. If he\u2019s going to be an agent of evangelism and discipleship in his home, he\u2019s got to understand the gospel, he\u2019s got to understand evangelism, and he\u2019s got to understand discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we talk about the gospel, he has to understand what the gospel is <em>not<\/em>. That\u2019s just as important\u2014understanding what the gospel is <em>not <\/em>is just as important as understanding what the gospel <em>is.<\/em> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe gospel, for example, is <em>not<\/em> the Law. Amen! The gospel is not the Law. The gospel is <em>not <\/em>all the moral teachings of Jesus; right? You know, how many of you have heard this new mantra: \u201cLove God; love people\u201d? It\u2019s usually, \u201cLove God; love people,\u201d and then, another tag line: \u201cLove God, love people, and change the world,\u201d \u201cLove God, love people, reach the city,\u201d \u201cLove God, love people, da-da-da-da-da.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the great irony\u2014is that idea of \u201cLove God; love people,\u201d\u2014you know, \u201cThat\u2019s who we are about, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re about,\u201d\u2014oftentimes it accompanies the ideathat: \u201cWe\u2019re not about rules. We\u2019re not about Law\u2014we are not about the Law. We\u2019re just about loving God and loving people.\u201d Here\u2019s the great irony\u2014\u201cLove God; love people,\u201d is basically a summary of Jesus, in Matthew 22, being asked about the Great Commandment; right? \u201cWhat\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLiterally, here\u2019s the question because there was an argument about which commandment was the greatest commandment. There was one school of thought that said the first commandment was the greatest commandment and all the others come under that umbrella. Some would have argued that the fifth commandment was the greatest commandment because it was a bridge between the two tables of the Law. Others would have argued that the tenth commandment was the greatest commandment because, ultimately, coveting is the root of all the rest of your sins. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he asked Jesus, \u201cWhich one?\u201d They were trying to put him in one of these camps: \u201cJesus, what\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d You know His answer\u2014He says, basically, the \u201cLove God\u201d part of \u201cLove God; love people,\u201d\u2014He said, \u201cLove the Lord, your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.\u201d He said, \u201cThat\u2019s the first and greatest commandment.\u201d By the way, that\u2019s a summary of the first table of the Law\u2014commandments one through four. Then, He says, \u201cThe second is like it\u2014love your neighbor as yourself.\u201d That\u2019s the summary of the second table of the Law. So: \u201cJesus, what\u2019s the greatest commandment?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to have to say, one through four, followed closely by five through ten.\u201d[Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the great irony\u2014\u201cLove God; love people,\u201d\u2014that is not the gospel\u2014it\u2019s actually a summary of the Law. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s the opposite of the gospel. I\u2019m not saying we can\u2019t use <em>that<\/em>\u2014just know what it is. It\u2019s the summary of <em>the Law<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s not the gospel. It\u2019s not the gospel; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat <em>is <\/em>the gospel? The gospel is the <em>good news<\/em>. It is the <em>good news<\/em> of what God has done through the person and work of Jesus Christ to redeem lost and sinful men through His death, burial, and resurrection as a substitutionary, vicarious death that satisfies the righteous wrath of a holy God on behalf of sinners who can be saved and forgiven no other way. That\u2019s what the gospel is; okay? It\u2019s really simple. That\u2019s what the gospel is\u2014it\u2019s something we proclaim!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat the gospel requires\u2014what does the gospel require? The gospel requires repentance and faith. That\u2019s it! The gospel requires repentance and faith\u2014period! The gospel requires repentance and faith. \u201cWell, you can\u2019t just live any way you want to live. There\u2019s got to be some obedience in there!\u201d Yes; that\u2019s what the gospel <em>produces<\/em>. If you confuse what the gospel produces and what the gospel requires, you end up in works righteousness because, now, you\u2019re trying to accomplish, in and of yourself, that which <em>only <\/em>God accomplishes through the gospel. Again, you\u2019re off the reservation if you don\u2019t get this. If a man is going to lead in family evangelism and discipleship, he has <em>got<\/em> to understand these things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we have been listening today to the first part of a message from Voddie Baucham\u2014a message where he was challenging men on the subject of spiritual leadership. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know how many of the guys, who came in that day, had been thinking about the relationship between the gospel and their marriage or the gospel and their family; but they got it before they left.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They did; and I don\u2019t want the men to miss the statement: \u201cYou should be prepared for battle.\u201d That\u2019s what Voddie was talking to you about. The battle begins for your marriage and your family. If you\u2019re a single guy, it begins by battling for the moral purity and innocence of a young lady you may be dating. If you\u2019re newly-married, it means you\u2019ve got to set a course, spiritually, for you and your wife. If you have children, it means the all-important spiritual leadership that disciples your kids to, first of all, come to know Jesus Christ as Savior, Master, and Lord; but then, secondly, to raise them to be Christ-followers their entire lives. Men need to <em>man<\/em> the battle station of the home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I noticed a lot of guys, who were scribbling notes as fast as they could as Voddie was speaking.
