So good to be here, you guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He is the founder of Seeds Family Worship. He\u2019s also family pastor at Lighthouse Church in Twin Falls, Idaho. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Oh yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s written a book, along with Bobby and Chad Harrington, called <em>Dedicated<\/em>, which is all about training your children to trust and follow Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s all about discipleship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s all about our Savior\u2019s command to go to the world and make disciples; but as we go to the world, we, first of all, have got to start at home\u2014making disciples of your children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the Scriptures are central to that. In fact, you\u2019ve written\u2014what did you tell me?\u2014more than 120-some songs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>We just finished a new album called <em>Lullabies and Scripture Songs<\/em>. Adding those 12 songs, we now have 120 songs we\u2019ve written to Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And these are verses you have put to music; and as I\u2019ve said, you\u2019ve done that for <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>, the resource that we created for parents of preteens to go through to talk about the birds and the bees. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you just wrote the songs for the new <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>. This is aimed at parents of 14- and 15-year-olds to help a middle school child \/ a junior high kid understand: \u201cWhat is my identity?\u00a0 What did God make me to be?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s sexual identity \/ spiritual identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cWhat am I good at?\u00a0 What\u2019s my job in life?\u00a0 What should my mission be?\u201d\u00a0 All of those things\u2014and when you\u2019ve got seven verses \/ seven songs from all over the Bible that deal with these issues, kids learn those songs. There\u2019s just something about a melody to a verse that causes it to stick with you for life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>And we want to hide God\u2019s Word \/ we want to store it up in our hearts so that we don\u2019t sin against Him\u2014it says in Psalm in 119. It\u2019s like getting God\u2019s Word in there. And you know, for us, we are living this right now. We have a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old, and an 11-year-old and really trying to help them discover who they are in Christ\u2014that their relationship with the Lord really becomes their own\u2014and also, where God is leading them, the things that He has for them, the purposes that they have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I mean, for us, as parents, we\u2019re looking so forward to this <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>\u2014to take our kids through it\u2014 just like <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> had such a profound impact on our family. So, this\u2014we\u2019re now at that next stage of life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I wanted to talk to you about because I think parents today, as they disciple their kids, need a few tools that they can go to that will really deliver the Scriptures in a practical way and in a relevant way to the lives of their children. You\u2019ve said <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> has had a profound impact on all three of your children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Not just our family but really our extended team\u2014you know\u2014over the whole Seeds Family Worship ministry; and our Board of Directors have gone through it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, for us, with our oldest son, I took him through it. We had these conversations. It really allowed a forum for us, and it really built our relationship. And I\u2019ll tell you\u2014when I took him, I was nervous just for the two of us to go off and spend that time together\u2014not only the content to be discussed but what it was going to be like\u2014and the Lord blessed our time so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Then, when I took our second son, Brandon\u2014and I\u2019ll just tell you this quick story\u2014we went on a hiking trip up in the mountains. He wanted to climb this mountain called Devil\u2019s Bedstead, and it was like an 11,000-foot peak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we hiked up to this lake. We spent the night, and we listened to\u2014we stayed in the cabin. We listened to some of the CDs; and then, we did this hike. Then, we came back and finished. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut during this whole process, I was saying: \u201cWell, how are you doing, son?\u201d and \u201cHow are things going?\u201d\u00a0 We were prompted to ask questions; he\u2019s like: \u201cEverything\u2019s good, Dad. Everything is good.\u201d\u00a0 So, we had dialogue; but everything was \u201cfine.\u201d\u00a0 On the third day, we came down from the mountain. We were getting ready to pack up our camp\u2014I remember this just like it was yesterday. I\u2019m standing there\u2014I\u2019m drinking a cup of coffee, and I say: \u201cHey, Brandon, before we head down the mountain, I just want to make sure\u201d\u2014I was prompted by the Spirit, and he and I were just having devotion \/ prayer before we headed down Sunday morning. I said, \u201cIs there anything else that you want to talk about from this weekend?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked down, and then, I looked up. I saw tears running down his face. He said\u2014he goes, \u201cYes, Dad, there are some things I want to talk to you about.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went over there, I hugged him, and we talked. We had one of the best conversations that we\u2019ve ever had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat had such an impact on his life, his walk with the Lord, and it\u2014also, as you talk about, with <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>, it sets a foundation for conversations. It\u2019s not a one-time deal that you talk about, as you said, the birds and the bees. We call it, in our household, \u201cBreaking it down\u201d\u2014\u201cDennis Rainey will break it down.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019ll tell you this\u2014when we were watching this\u2014the fellows can edit this\u2014but when I\u2019m sitting here \/ when you are saying these words\u2014okay\u2014and you\u2019re trying to use the right words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The anatomically-correct words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you\u2019re breaking it down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>You\u2019re breaking it down. [Laughter] I tell you\u2014it feels like\u2014it\u2019s like you and your son, and then, for us, it\u2019s like Dennis Rainey\u2014the three of you are sitting there, and you\u2019re listening to Dennis. They\u2019re listening and you\u2019re watching their body language, and he\u2019s explaining what sex is and you\u2019re just going, \u201cI\u2019m so glad he\u2019s saying this and not me.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019ll just tell you parents\u2014it really helps; okay?\u00a0 And he knows\u2014like on my best day, I couldn\u2019t have broken it down for him as well as that. And then, you can just field questions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But that was a great moment for us to go, \u201cWe\u2019re having this necessary conversation.\u201d\u00a0 Then, it goes\u2014<em>Passport<\/em> goes on to share other things like pornography, and homosexuality, and different things that we need to have these discussions; but it\u2019s so difficult and gives a pathway to begin these conversations that need to be ongoing for our teenagers. And this whole thing we talk about with passing our faith down to our kids and discipleship\u2014the foundation of that is <em>relationship<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>And this <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>\u2014I mean, this weekend is about your child and about these conversations; but you plan it around a special, fun time that you have together. It\u2019s so meaningful to them that you are investing in them, and that\u2019s what happened with that moment with Brandon. I asked him if I could share this story with you guys because I wanted to make sure he was okay with that, but I invested that time in him. He knew he had that pathway, Dennis, to my heart and that he could share those things and it was safe. It\u2019s made such a difference in our relationship as we\u2019ve kind of entered into the teenage years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s so important to have these conversations, and that\u2019s what I want to emphasize with the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>. We\u2019re so thankful to be a part of it; but honestly, I\u2019m talking as a dad that wants to be in the battle for our kids. We have an opportunity, but it takes a commitment to make it a priority. It takes you to make the time and to just the straight-up courage to say: \u201cI\u2019m going to take this step, and I\u2019m going to do this. I\u2019m going to make it a priority.\u201d\u00a0 You won\u2019t regret it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A seventh-grade son\u2014you say: \u201cLet\u2019s go off for one of these weekends. We\u2019re going to do something fun. We\u2019re going to hike this mountain you\u2019ve wanted to hike.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s one thing. Now, that he\u2019s 14\u2014when you double back with him and say, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to do another getaway\u2014father and son like this,\u201d do you anticipate that he\u2019ll go, \u201cCool!\u201d or do you anticipate that he\u2019ll go, \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Both of our boys will be so fired up about doing it again. The mountain that Brandon and I tried to climb\u2014we never made it to the top. It got too gnarly, honestly, and we should have been roped in this mountain; but we made a decision to turn around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like a big-life decision too\u2014you know, like: \u201cHere we are, out adventuring; but you have to make wise decisions.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at him and I said, \u201cHey, I know we can see the top of the mountain right here, but I feel like we should turn around.\u201d\u00a0 We prayed; and I said: \u201cWhat do you think?\u00a0 Let\u2019s make this decision together.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI think we should turn around.\u201d\u00a0 That was part of our journey too\u2014even the experience you are having with your child outside of listening to the CDs and talking about those topics. It\u2019s really sharing these experiences. The activities that you are doing are\u2014God\u2019s going to teach you things there too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re talking with Jason Houser, who is with Seeds Family Worship\u2014wrote the songs that are featured on <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> and <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> and has also written a book called <em>Dedicated<\/em>, along with Bobby and Chad Harrington. You want to help moms and dads know how to raise the next generation to love and follow Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s about that discipleship. Our mission is\u2014we want to get God\u2019s Word into as many homes as possible around the world and just the creative ways to do that through music, through DVDs, and videos, and teaching; but really to come alongside\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, what you\u2019re saying\u2014come alongside parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe, also, feel like a big part of our ministry is to encourage. You know, parents get discouraged. It\u2019s so important to know, parents\u2014that these things are going to be challenging. We\u2019re not going to say it\u2019s going to be easy, but these are the things that matter. That\u2019s why we called the book <em>Dedicated<\/em>. It\u2019s because you want to be dedicated to the most important things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are all of these other things\u2014sports, and music, and college, and all these other things that we aspire to\u2014but you\u2019ve got to make sure that this is the top priority in your home\u2014this discipleship\u2014and that you\u2019re\u2014it\u2019s more important than all of these other things. The long-term\u2014the eternity of your children is more important than their next step of future with finances, and college, and et cetera. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And here\u2019s a way to make that really practical for parents. Imagine this scenario:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have two options. Somebody comes to you today and says, \u201cI can deliver to you a child, who will get a scholarship to college \/ who will be a virgin when he gets married, but he\u2019s not going to really be in love with Jesus,\u201d or \u201cI can deliver you a \u201cC\u201d student, who will go to community college, and who will get pregnant before she\u2019s married; but at the end of the day, she\u2019s going to be madly and passionately in love with Jesus. Which do you want more?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, there is something about that question that I feel a tension myself; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You feel it\u2014it\u2019s like, \u201cI want \u2018A <em>and<\/em> \u2018B\u2019\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI want the best of both of those.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI don\u2019t want the pain.\u201d You know, there is something about a parent, watching a child make wrong choices\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes\u2014yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014there\u2019s nothing quite like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>But in the struggle, God works so often. You know, as parents, we are going to fail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur kids are going to struggle. That\u2019s one of the reasons we encourage people to be involved in a church community\u2014that you don\u2019t need to be alone\u2014especially for single parents. We need to be doing this together because this is <em>hard<\/em>\u2014but to focus on the most important thing that that child, whose heart, even through difficult seasons, has been molded by God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the songs that we wrote for the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> was Colossians 3:2-3: \u201cFor you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.\u201d\u00a0 We tell people and the kids: \u201cYour life is in Christ.\u201d\u00a0 The world says: \u201cI need to go find myself. I need to travel the world,\u201d and they need to do all these things. It\u2019s like: \u201cYour true life, and your joy, and the good things for you\u2014that\u2019s in Christ. That\u2019s where your life is.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s the central verse to all of <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cSet your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.\u201d\u00a0 I can hear the melody in the back of my mind as I\u2019ve listened: \u201cFor you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.\u201d\u00a0 If our kids can get that: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI need to be setting my mind on things that are above and not on things that are on earth,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> step forward; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>It is. And that\u2019s so much a part of <em>my<\/em> testimony. I was chasing after the things of the world, and the music industry, and my selfish ambition. I thought that was life; but then, I had \u201csuccess\u201d in that world. I was so unhappy, and my family was falling apart. And not until the moment, when my great plan didn\u2019t work, and I cried out to God\u2014I talked about in our last interview\u2014but God did a work in our marriage. I said, \u201cGod, if I don\u2019t do music, no matter what, just save my family. I surrender myself to You.\u201d\u00a0 And then, I found the <em>life<\/em> that God had for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe gifting that he put in me for music was for Him \/ for His glory; but I get the greatest joy\u2014and you talk about the scenario with the child; you know?\u00a0 Having that child that has that heart\u2014that\u2019s been through the fire\u2014but then knows who they are in Christ and they can stand on that\u2014that\u2019s where their joy and their true life is. God is going to bring so many good things out of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that is the ultimate good. Again, it goes back to the parents trusting in the goodness of God, and His plans and His purposes, and being under His authority during those difficult and challenging seasons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was counseling with a parent, who is going through a very difficult season with his teenager, and some things that she is dealing with. He called for counsel, and he\u2019s leading her. He\u2019s stepping up, as a dad, and he\u2019s walking with this daughter. Again, they have the relationship where they can have this communication\u2014she can share her struggles. He can talk with her, and pray with her, and point her to the truth; and that\u2019s what we have to do, as parents. It\u2019s not that we\u2019re not going to have these challenges and struggles, but we need to know where to go, and to lead our kids, and walk them through these storms. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>By the way, if our listeners are interested in hearing the conversation we had about your spiritual wake-up call, they can go to FamilyLifeToday.com. We\u2019ve got a link there so they can listen to that conversation that we had a while back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And one of the ways we teach our kids to become disciples of Christ are in the midst of these crises, when they occur in our lives, as adults. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I understand you were on your way to go skiing with your family to Utah\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and something happened at that point that gave you a unique teaching opportunity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>One of the things that we do as a family\u2014it\u2019s just a habit\u2014you know, you get into habits as families. There are good habits and bad habits; right?\u00a0 You start forming the right habits, and they\u2019re just something you do. One of the things we do when we travel together is we always pray. We just say a short prayer. It\u2019s not super-spiritual\u2014we\u2019re the Housermania. [Laughter]\u00a0 But it\u2019s just a part of who we are. It\u2019s like\u2014that\u2019s how we roll!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>But we got on the road, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Break it down!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Break it down!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Break it down!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Oh, yes. Let\u2019s get a drum machine in here, and let\u2019s write a song. No\u2014but so, for us, I realized\u2014as we started driving from Twin Falls, Idaho, to Park City, Utah, where we were going to be skiing\u2014it was starting to snow, and we hadn\u2019t prayed. And I started\u2014and I just started feeling like: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWow! This is getting a little sketchy out here.\u201d\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cHey, you guys, let\u2019s pray.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe prayed and said: \u201cLord, please protect us. Give us wisdom if we should turn around.\u201d\u00a0 Well, we kept going. The snow kept getting thicker. Come to find out, literally, five minutes later, we\u2019re coming up on semis stopped in the middle of the interstate. We\u2019re going too fast. I slam on the brakes. We almost go right into the back of the semi, but we stopped just in time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m literally crying out to the Lord. Our middle son, Brandon, thought I was\u2014goes, \u201cDad, I didn\u2019t know if you were like laughing or what was going on.\u201d\u00a0 I was like [screaming], \u201cLord, Jesus!\u201d because I was scared; you know?\u00a0 So, we did come to a stop; but then, I realized there are cars coming behind us, just like we were\u2014now, we\u2019re a target. I hear smashing of trucks\u2014literally, semi-trucks smashing behind us. I go around this semi-truck. Another like truck comes beside us and clips, and hits my daughter\u2019s door \/ the door of our van, right where our daughter is. She says, \u201cMommy, I don\u2019t want to die!\u201d\u00a0 These are moments you <em>never<\/em> forget. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going through, and we get through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy a miracle, we get through that, and get over to the side of the road, and get out of the way. Then, we still hear smashing of cars\u2014it was like a 30- or 40-car pile-up here. We get out; we\u2019re safe. We end up\u2014our car ended up being totaled. We go back and get home. That was a moment in our lives, where we go, \u201cOkay, every day is so precious; and just to have that prayer.\u201d\u00a0 I believe the Lord heard and honored our prayers that day. We were all not hurt, and we lived through that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut those are the moments that\u2014they do make you stop and go, \u201cEvery day is a gift from the Lord\u2014every day with our kids.\u201d\u00a0 Also, just praying, as we\u2019re going through these days, that the Lord is with us is so important. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had the opportunity, as you were working on this book, to talk to people about discipling their kids and talk to folks who had done this well \/ who had a track record\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and said, \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d\u00a0 There was one couple that you talked to\u2014who ran a kindergarten \/ like a preschool in Nashville; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Actually, my coauthor, Bobby Harrington, who is the lead teaching pastor at the church that the Seeds Family Worship ministry came out of\u2014he and his wife Cindy had several significant couples. When they first became parents, they didn\u2019t have any context of discipleship in their home. Actually, he came from a\u2014Bobby came from an abusive home. His dad is now a believer and a follower of Jesus, but he had a very difficult upbringing. So, they looked, when they started their family, for Christian parents that they could model after. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis couple was one of those families within their church that showed them how important it was to pray every day for their kids. And they got them started on that right foot of saying: \u201cOkay, we\u2019re going to pray. We\u2019re going to make prayer a priority.\u201d\u00a0 And so, not only did they pray for their kids every day\u2014Bobby and Cindy did\u2014but they also got some other families that they prayed for their kids, and they would pray for each other\u2019s kids. There\u2019s another family\u2014the Sanders family\u2014and they covenanted together to say: \u201cWe\u2019re going to decide, \u2018Hey, would you pray for our kids?\u00a0 Will you speak into our kids\u2019 lives?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 They developed these relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things I tell Christian parents is, \u201cHave other Christian parents that want to do the same thing that you\u2019re doing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a great idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a win. Then, sometimes, even as the kids are teenagers, you know, coming to Mom and Dad can be tough, but there\u2019s this other role model\u2014this other man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Kind of like an uncle or an aunt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Exactly; yes. So, they can come to them and say, \u201cI\u2019m having this problem.\u201d\u00a0 And parents should be strategic; right?\u00a0 You could tell that friend: \u201cHey, would you talk to my son?\u201d \u201cWill you take my son out and do this,\u201d or \u201c\u2026go on a trip?\u201d or \u201c\u2026go camping?\u201d\u00a0 Create the situation where that dialogue can take place. Then, we can help each other. And I think it\u2019s such a great lesson for Christian parents\u2014is have someone that you\u2019re saying, \u201cHey, let\u2019s help each other disciple each other\u2019s kids; and let\u2019s really be in this together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think what I want our listeners to take away from today\u2019s broadcast is\u2014first of all, as a parent, you\u2019ve got to have the real disease. You have to have a love for Jesus Christ that your kids can see \/ your kids can emulate as you model it, and that they can see you practicing your faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s <em>not<\/em> some once-a-week type experience: \u201cDad\/Mom\u2014they really are following Christ, and they are teaching us to follow Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat would be my second thing\u2014is just be intentional about training your kids. Don\u2019t leave it to the church, and I\u2019m not against the church. Church has got to do it; but the church needs to be equipping you, moms and dads, to be able to equip the sons and daughters and the next generation to follow Christ. It\u2019s your assignment to train your kids, <em>not<\/em> the church. And that\u2019s going to sound countercultural to some people, but I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014God didn\u2019t give children to the church. He gave them to parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, an hour-and-a-half a week at church isn\u2019t going to get it done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s too much of life in between, Bob. That\u2019s where you\u2019ve got to be intersecting your kids with how this book, the Bible, applies to what they\u2019re doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got to just thank you, Jason, for your work with Seeds Family Worship because you give parents some other practical ways of bringing music and Scripture together to really fill homes with the truth about God but do it in a catchy, relevant, fresh way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014I <em>love<\/em> talking to moms and dads when they\u2019ve just come back from either a <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> weekend or, now, some of them are starting to come back from their <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> weekend that they are doing with their 14- or 15-year-old. And they say to me, \u201cI\u2019ve got this song stuck in my head.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I say, \u201cWhat song?\u201d\u00a0 And they\u2019ll sing to me one of the verses that you\u2019ve put to music that was a part of the weekend. So good to be here, you guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He is the founder of Seeds Family Worship. He\u2019s also family pastor at Lighthouse Church in Twin Falls, Idaho. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Oh yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s written a book, along with Bobby and Chad Harrington, called <em>Dedicated<\/em>, which is all about training your children to trust and follow Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s all about discipleship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s all about our Savior\u2019s command to go to the world and make disciples; but as we go to the world, we, first of all, have got to start at home\u2014making disciples of your children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And the Scriptures are central to that. In fact, you\u2019ve written\u2014what did you tell me?\u2014more than 120-some songs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>We just finished a new album called <em>Lullabies and Scripture Songs<\/em>. Adding those 12 songs, we now have 120 songs we\u2019ve written to Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And these are verses you have put to music; and as I\u2019ve said, you\u2019ve done that for <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>, the resource that we created for parents of preteens to go through to talk about the birds and the bees. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you just wrote the songs for the new <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>. This is aimed at parents of 14- and 15-year-olds to help a middle school child \/ a junior high kid understand: \u201cWhat is my identity?\u00a0 What did God make me to be?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s sexual identity \/ spiritual identity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cWhat am I good at?\u00a0 What\u2019s my job in life?\u00a0 What should my mission be?\u201d\u00a0 All of those things\u2014and when you\u2019ve got seven verses \/ seven songs from all over the Bible that deal with these issues, kids learn those songs. There\u2019s just something about a melody to a verse that causes it to stick with you for life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>And we want to hide God\u2019s Word \/ we want to store it up in our hearts so that we don\u2019t sin against Him\u2014it says in Psalm in 119. It\u2019s like getting God\u2019s Word in there. And you know, for us, we are living this right now. We have a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old, and an 11-year-old and really trying to help them discover who they are in Christ\u2014that their relationship with the Lord really becomes their own\u2014and also, where God is leading them, the things that He has for them, the purposes that they have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I mean, for us, as parents, we\u2019re looking so forward to this <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>\u2014to take our kids through it\u2014 just like <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> had such a profound impact on our family. So, this\u2014we\u2019re now at that next stage of life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s what I wanted to talk to you about because I think parents today, as they disciple their kids, need a few tools that they can go to that will really deliver the Scriptures in a practical way and in a relevant way to the lives of their children. You\u2019ve said <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> has had a profound impact on all three of your children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Not just our family but really our extended team\u2014you know\u2014over the whole Seeds Family Worship ministry; and our Board of Directors have gone through it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know, for us, with our oldest son, I took him through it. We had these conversations. It really allowed a forum for us, and it really built our relationship. And I\u2019ll tell you\u2014when I took him, I was nervous just for the two of us to go off and spend that time together\u2014not only the content to be discussed but what it was going to be like\u2014and the Lord blessed our time so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Then, when I took our second son, Brandon\u2014and I\u2019ll just tell you this quick story\u2014we went on a hiking trip up in the mountains. He wanted to climb this mountain called Devil\u2019s Bedstead, and it was like an 11,000-foot peak. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we hiked up to this lake. We spent the night, and we listened to\u2014we stayed in the cabin. We listened to some of the CDs; and then, we did this hike. Then, we came back and finished. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut during this whole process, I was saying: \u201cWell, how are you doing, son?\u201d and \u201cHow are things going?\u201d\u00a0 We were prompted to ask questions; he\u2019s like: \u201cEverything\u2019s good, Dad. Everything is good.\u201d\u00a0 So, we had dialogue; but everything was \u201cfine.\u201d\u00a0 On the third day, we came down from the mountain. We were getting ready to pack up our camp\u2014I remember this just like it was yesterday. I\u2019m standing there\u2014I\u2019m drinking a cup of coffee, and I say: \u201cHey, Brandon, before we head down the mountain, I just want to make sure\u201d\u2014I was prompted by the Spirit, and he and I were just having devotion \/ prayer before we headed down Sunday morning. I said, \u201cIs there anything else that you want to talk about from this weekend?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked down, and then, I looked up. I saw tears running down his face. He said\u2014he goes, \u201cYes, Dad, there are some things I want to talk to you about.\u201d\u00a0 So, I went over there, I hugged him, and we talked. We had one of the best conversations that we\u2019ve ever had. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat had such an impact on his life, his walk with the Lord, and it\u2014also, as you talk about, with <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>, it sets a foundation for conversations. It\u2019s not a one-time deal that you talk about, as you said, the birds and the bees. We call it, in our household, \u201cBreaking it down\u201d\u2014\u201cDennis Rainey will break it down.\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019ll tell you this\u2014when we were watching this\u2014the fellows can edit this\u2014but when I\u2019m sitting here \/ when you are saying these words\u2014okay\u2014and you\u2019re trying to use the right words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>The anatomically-correct words. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And you\u2019re breaking it down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>You\u2019re breaking it down. [Laughter] I tell you\u2014it feels like\u2014it\u2019s like you and your son, and then, for us, it\u2019s like Dennis Rainey\u2014the three of you are sitting there, and you\u2019re listening to Dennis. They\u2019re listening and you\u2019re watching their body language, and he\u2019s explaining what sex is and you\u2019re just going, \u201cI\u2019m so glad he\u2019s saying this and not me.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019ll just tell you parents\u2014it really helps; okay?\u00a0 And he knows\u2014like on my best day, I couldn\u2019t have broken it down for him as well as that. And then, you can just field questions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But that was a great moment for us to go, \u201cWe\u2019re having this necessary conversation.\u201d\u00a0 Then, it goes\u2014<em>Passport<\/em> goes on to share other things like pornography, and homosexuality, and different things that we need to have these discussions; but it\u2019s so difficult and gives a pathway to begin these conversations that need to be ongoing for our teenagers. And this whole thing we talk about with passing our faith down to our kids and discipleship\u2014the foundation of that is <em>relationship<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>And this <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>\u2014I mean, this weekend is about your child and about these conversations; but you plan it around a special, fun time that you have together. It\u2019s so meaningful to them that you are investing in them, and that\u2019s what happened with that moment with Brandon. I asked him if I could share this story with you guys because I wanted to make sure he was okay with that, but I invested that time in him. He knew he had that pathway, Dennis, to my heart and that he could share those things and it was safe. It\u2019s made such a difference in our relationship as we\u2019ve kind of entered into the teenage years. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s so important to have these conversations, and that\u2019s what I want to emphasize with the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>. We\u2019re so thankful to be a part of it; but honestly, I\u2019m talking as a dad that wants to be in the battle for our kids. We have an opportunity, but it takes a commitment to make it a priority. It takes you to make the time and to just the straight-up courage to say: \u201cI\u2019m going to take this step, and I\u2019m going to do this. I\u2019m going to make it a priority.\u201d\u00a0 You won\u2019t regret it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A seventh-grade son\u2014you say: \u201cLet\u2019s go off for one of these weekends. We\u2019re going to do something fun. We\u2019re going to hike this mountain you\u2019ve wanted to hike.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s one thing. Now, that he\u2019s 14\u2014when you double back with him and say, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to do another getaway\u2014father and son like this,\u201d do you anticipate that he\u2019ll go, \u201cCool!\u201d or do you anticipate that he\u2019ll go, \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Both of our boys will be so fired up about doing it again. The mountain that Brandon and I tried to climb\u2014we never made it to the top. It got too gnarly, honestly, and we should have been roped in this mountain; but we made a decision to turn around. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like a big-life decision too\u2014you know, like: \u201cHere we are, out adventuring; but you have to make wise decisions.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at him and I said, \u201cHey, I know we can see the top of the mountain right here, but I feel like we should turn around.\u201d\u00a0 We prayed; and I said: \u201cWhat do you think?\u00a0 Let\u2019s make this decision together.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI think we should turn around.\u201d\u00a0 That was part of our journey too\u2014even the experience you are having with your child outside of listening to the CDs and talking about those topics. It\u2019s really sharing these experiences. The activities that you are doing are\u2014God\u2019s going to teach you things there too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re talking with Jason Houser, who is with Seeds Family Worship\u2014wrote the songs that are featured on <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> and <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> and has also written a book called <em>Dedicated<\/em>, along with Bobby and Chad Harrington. This really comes out of what is your mission in your ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You\u2019re not just wanting to write Bible verses and put them to music. You want to help moms and dads know how to raise the next generation to love and follow Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes, it\u2019s about that discipleship. Our mission is\u2014we want to get God\u2019s Word into as many homes as possible around the world and just the creative ways to do that through music, through DVDs, and videos, and teaching; but really to come alongside\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, what you\u2019re saying\u2014come alongside parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe, also, feel like a big part of our ministry is to encourage. You know, parents get discouraged. It\u2019s so important to know, parents\u2014that these things are going to be challenging. We\u2019re not going to say it\u2019s going to be easy, but these are the things that matter. That\u2019s why we called the book <em>Dedicated<\/em>. It\u2019s because you want to be dedicated to the most important things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are all of these other things\u2014sports, and music, and college, and all these other things that we aspire to\u2014but you\u2019ve got to make sure that this is the top priority in your home\u2014this discipleship\u2014and that you\u2019re\u2014it\u2019s more important than all of these other things. The long-term\u2014the eternity of your children is more important than their next step of future with finances, and college, and et cetera. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And here\u2019s a way to make that really practical for parents. Imagine this scenario:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have two options. Somebody comes to you today and says, \u201cI can deliver to you a child, who will get a scholarship to college \/ who will be a virgin when he gets married, but he\u2019s not going to really be in love with Jesus,\u201d or \u201cI can deliver you a \u201cC\u201d student, who will go to community college, and who will get pregnant before she\u2019s married; but at the end of the day, she\u2019s going to be madly and passionately in love with Jesus. Which do you want more?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Now, there is something about that question that I feel a tension myself; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You feel it\u2014it\u2019s like, \u201cI want \u2018A <em>and<\/em> \u2018B\u2019\u201d; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI want the best of both of those.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201cI don\u2019t want the pain.\u201d You know, there is something about a parent, watching a child make wrong choices\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes\u2014yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014there\u2019s nothing quite like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>But in the struggle, God works so often. You know, as parents, we are going to fail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur kids are going to struggle. That\u2019s one of the reasons we encourage people to be involved in a church community\u2014that you don\u2019t need to be alone\u2014especially for single parents. We need to be doing this together because this is <em>hard<\/em>\u2014but to focus on the most important thing that that child, whose heart, even through difficult seasons, has been molded by God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the songs that we wrote for the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> was Colossians 3:2-3: \u201cFor you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.\u201d\u00a0 We tell people and the kids: \u201cYour life is in Christ.\u201d\u00a0 The world says: \u201cI need to go find myself. I need to travel the world,\u201d and they need to do all these things. It\u2019s like: \u201cYour true life, and your joy, and the good things for you\u2014that\u2019s in Christ. That\u2019s where your life is.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>That\u2019s the central verse to all of <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u201cSet your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.\u201d\u00a0 I can hear the melody in the back of my mind as I\u2019ve listened: \u201cFor you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.\u201d\u00a0 If our kids can get that: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI need to be setting my mind on things that are above and not on things that are on earth,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s a <em>huge<\/em> step forward; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>It is. And that\u2019s so much a part of <em>my<\/em> testimony. I was chasing after the things of the world, and the music industry, and my selfish ambition. I thought that was life; but then, I had \u201csuccess\u201d in that world. I was so unhappy, and my family was falling apart. And not until the moment, when my great plan didn\u2019t work, and I cried out to God\u2014I talked about in our last interview\u2014but God did a work in our marriage. I said, \u201cGod, if I don\u2019t do music, no matter what, just save my family. I surrender myself to You.\u201d\u00a0 And then, I found the <em>life<\/em> that God had for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe gifting that he put in me for music was for Him \/ for His glory; but I get the greatest joy\u2014and you talk about the scenario with the child; you know?\u00a0 Having that child that has that heart\u2014that\u2019s been through the fire\u2014but then knows who they are in Christ and they can stand on that\u2014that\u2019s where their joy and their true life is. God is going to bring so many good things out of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that is the ultimate good. Again, it goes back to the parents trusting in the goodness of God, and His plans and His purposes, and being under His authority during those difficult and challenging seasons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was counseling with a parent, who is going through a very difficult season with his teenager, and some things that she is dealing with. He called for counsel, and he\u2019s leading her. He\u2019s stepping up, as a dad, and he\u2019s walking with this daughter. Again, they have the relationship where they can have this communication\u2014she can share her struggles. He can talk with her, and pray with her, and point her to the truth; and that\u2019s what we have to do, as parents. It\u2019s not that we\u2019re not going to have these challenges and struggles, but we need to know where to go, and to lead our kids, and walk them through these storms. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>By the way, if our listeners are interested in hearing the conversation we had about your spiritual wake-up call, they can go to FamilyLifeToday.com. We\u2019ve got a link there so they can listen to that conversation that we had a while back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And one of the ways we teach our kids to become disciples of Christ are in the midst of these crises, when they occur in our lives, as adults. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I understand you were on your way to go skiing with your family to Utah\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes; yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and something happened at that point that gave you a unique teaching opportunity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>One of the things that we do as a family\u2014it\u2019s just a habit\u2014you know, you get into habits as families. There are good habits and bad habits; right?\u00a0 You start forming the right habits, and they\u2019re just something you do. One of the things we do when we travel together is we always pray. We just say a short prayer. It\u2019s not super-spiritual\u2014we\u2019re the Housermania. [Laughter]\u00a0 But it\u2019s just a part of who we are. It\u2019s like\u2014that\u2019s how we roll!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>But we got on the road, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Break it down!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Break it down!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Break it down!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Oh, yes. Let\u2019s get a drum machine in here, and let\u2019s write a song. No\u2014but so, for us, I realized\u2014as we started driving from Twin Falls, Idaho, to Park City, Utah, where we were going to be skiing\u2014it was starting to snow, and we hadn\u2019t prayed. And I started\u2014and I just started feeling like: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWow! This is getting a little sketchy out here.\u201d\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cHey, you guys, let\u2019s pray.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe prayed and said: \u201cLord, please protect us. Give us wisdom if we should turn around.\u201d\u00a0 Well, we kept going. The snow kept getting thicker. Come to find out, literally, five minutes later, we\u2019re coming up on semis stopped in the middle of the interstate. We\u2019re going too fast. I slam on the brakes. We almost go right into the back of the semi, but we stopped just in time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m literally crying out to the Lord. Our middle son, Brandon, thought I was\u2014goes, \u201cDad, I didn\u2019t know if you were like laughing or what was going on.\u201d\u00a0 I was like [screaming], \u201cLord, Jesus!\u201d because I was scared; you know?\u00a0 So, we did come to a stop; but then, I realized there are cars coming behind us, just like we were\u2014now, we\u2019re a target. I hear smashing of trucks\u2014literally, semi-trucks smashing behind us. I go around this semi-truck. Another like truck comes beside us and clips, and hits my daughter\u2019s door \/ the door of our van, right where our daughter is. She says, \u201cMommy, I don\u2019t want to die!\u201d\u00a0 These are moments you <em>never<\/em> forget. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going through, and we get through. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy a miracle, we get through that, and get over to the side of the road, and get out of the way. Then, we still hear smashing of cars\u2014it was like a 30- or 40-car pile-up here. We get out; we\u2019re safe. We end up\u2014our car ended up being totaled. We go back and get home. That was a moment in our lives, where we go, \u201cOkay, every day is so precious; and just to have that prayer.\u201d\u00a0 I believe the Lord heard and honored our prayers that day. We were all not hurt, and we lived through that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut those are the moments that\u2014they do make you stop and go, \u201cEvery day is a gift from the Lord\u2014every day with our kids.\u201d\u00a0 Also, just praying, as we\u2019re going through these days, that the Lord is with us is so important. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You had the opportunity, as you were working on this book, to talk to people about discipling their kids and talk to folks who had done this well \/ who had a track record\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and said, \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d\u00a0 There was one couple that you talked to\u2014who ran a kindergarten \/ like a preschool in Nashville; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Actually, my coauthor, Bobby Harrington, who is the lead teaching pastor at the church that the Seeds Family Worship ministry came out of\u2014he and his wife Cindy had several significant couples. When they first became parents, they didn\u2019t have any context of discipleship in their home. Actually, he came from a\u2014Bobby came from an abusive home. His dad is now a believer and a follower of Jesus, but he had a very difficult upbringing. So, they looked, when they started their family, for Christian parents that they could model after. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis couple was one of those families within their church that showed them how important it was to pray every day for their kids. And they got them started on that right foot of saying: \u201cOkay, we\u2019re going to pray. We\u2019re going to make prayer a priority.\u201d\u00a0 And so, not only did they pray for their kids every day\u2014Bobby and Cindy did\u2014but they also got some other families that they prayed for their kids, and they would pray for each other\u2019s kids. There\u2019s another family\u2014the Sanders family\u2014and they covenanted together to say: \u201cWe\u2019re going to decide, \u2018Hey, would you pray for our kids?\u00a0 Will you speak into our kids\u2019 lives?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 They developed these relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things I tell Christian parents is, \u201cHave other Christian parents that want to do the same thing that you\u2019re doing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That\u2019s a great idea. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>And that\u2019s a win. Then, sometimes, even as the kids are teenagers, you know, coming to Mom and Dad can be tough, but there\u2019s this other role model\u2014this other man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Kind of like an uncle or an aunt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Exactly; yes. So, they can come to them and say, \u201cI\u2019m having this problem.\u201d\u00a0 And parents should be strategic; right?\u00a0 You could tell that friend: \u201cHey, would you talk to my son?\u201d \u201cWill you take my son out and do this,\u201d or \u201c\u2026go on a trip?\u201d or \u201c\u2026go camping?\u201d\u00a0 Create the situation where that dialogue can take place. Then, we can help each other. And I think it\u2019s such a great lesson for Christian parents\u2014is have someone that you\u2019re saying, \u201cHey, let\u2019s help each other disciple each other\u2019s kids; and let\u2019s really be in this together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think what I want our listeners to take away from today\u2019s broadcast is\u2014first of all, as a parent, you\u2019ve got to have the real disease. You have to have a love for Jesus Christ that your kids can see \/ your kids can emulate as you model it, and that they can see you practicing your faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s <em>not<\/em> some once-a-week type experience: \u201cDad\/Mom\u2014they really are following Christ, and they are teaching us to follow Christ.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat would be my second thing\u2014is just be intentional about training your kids. Don\u2019t leave it to the church, and I\u2019m not against the church. Church has got to do it; but the church needs to be equipping you, moms and dads, to be able to equip the sons and daughters and the next generation to follow Christ. It\u2019s your assignment to train your kids, <em>not<\/em> the church. And that\u2019s going to sound countercultural to some people, but I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014God didn\u2019t give children to the church. He gave them to parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, an hour-and-a-half a week at church isn\u2019t going to get it done. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>There\u2019s too much of life in between, Bob. That\u2019s where you\u2019ve got to be intersecting your kids with how this book, the Bible, applies to what they\u2019re doing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got to just thank you, Jason, for your work with Seeds Family Worship because you give parents some other practical ways of bringing music and Scripture together to really fill homes with the truth about God but do it in a catchy, relevant, fresh way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; I\u2019ve got to tell you\u2014I <em>love<\/em> talking to moms and dads when they\u2019ve just come back from either a <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> weekend or, now, some of them are starting to come back from their <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> weekend that they are doing with their 14- or 15-year-old.
