I\u2019m just curious how somebody, who has a planning obsession, handles life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Are you talking about a control freak? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I was trying to use a more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our guest\u2019s laughter is giving her away. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014trying to use a more gentle term. It\u2019s the term\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, it\u2019s alright; I\u2019ve heard it before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>She uses the term in her book, planning obsession. I\u2019m just wondering, \u201cHow you deal with that, when you\u2019ve got two kids who are on the autism spectrum, and a third child who\u2019s right in the middle of all of that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the ages of all three are?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Eleven, eight, and six.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow! Well, it results\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it results in, Bob, a book called <em>Sand in My Sandwich: And Other Motherhood Messes I\u2019m Learning to Love<\/em>. Now, that\u2019s a good wrap up to that book title\u2014that you\u2019re <em>learning<\/em> to love. It doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve got it nailed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I\u2019m a recovering control freak\u2014as in: \u201cI\u2019m not totally cured yet, but I\u2019m trying.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s the voice of Sarah Parshall Perry. She and her husband Matt have been married since 2001\u2014live in Maryland with these three young children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things you talked about, early in your book, was that you went to law school at UVA, the University of Virginia. And after you had your\u2014who is now your oldest son, Noah, you quickly stepped out of the profession. Why did you do that?\u2014because here is all this training that you had. You\u2019d gotten married later in life. Why did you step out of the profession of being an attorney?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh boy!\u00a0 For a very simple reason\u2014I was blindsided by how much I loved the baby they put in my arms. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you could make all the plans you want\u2014in fact, I had very foolishly decided: \u201cWell, if I get a raise\u2014that means that they value my input. And maybe, I\u2019ll take that as a sign to go back to work.\u201d\u00a0 I remember, when they laid him in my arms, looking up at Matt, going, \u201cI think I need to call and put my two weeks\u2019 notice in.\u201d\u00a0 It just was, without a question, the easiest decision I\u2019ve ever had to make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Even with all the investment of the years, and the sweat, and the toil over those papers you wrote in law school?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, and the bar exam\u2014which if I had an option to negotiate with the Lord on workload, I would trade the bar exam again for what I do on a regular basis with these three kids\u2014but I have to tell you\u2014it was such a decision that was made with complete clarity. I prayed about it, and Matt and I <em>knew<\/em> we\u2019d have to make sacrifices. We cashed out a 401k, and we sold our car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe made some things \/ you know, some decisions that hurt a little bit; but it was such peace about the decision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Hot dogs and mac and cheese. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Hot dogs, and mac and cheese, and ramen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 I want to go back just to the decision that you made to have children because you and Matt married later in life. Was it a given that you guys were going to have kids?\u00a0 Did you like them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I had always loved kids \/ <em>knew<\/em> I would have them, but really had set this internal path\u2014again, see \u201ccontrol freak\u201d in footnotes\u2014that I was going to have children, and then, I was going to go back to work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it is very difficult to manage\u2014for those working mothers, who are listening\u2014very hard to do both because you don\u2019t get to come home from a job and suddenly go: \u201cOkay; I\u2019m clocking off. Somebody bring me my slippers and my paper.\u201d\u00a0 Mom is always Mom, whether she is in an office or whether she is at home all day with children. That\u2019s actually something I address in my next book, which is coming out next year\u2014<em>Mommy Needs a Raise (Because Quitting\u2019s Not an Option)<\/em>\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you don\u2019t get to leave!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to kind of figure out the balance between work and family and what it feels like to give it up. I had to figure out where I was going to find worth because it wasn\u2019t in a paycheck, it wasn\u2019t my signature on a brief, it wasn\u2019t in a raise, and it wasn\u2019t in a promotion\u2014it was in three little children. I went from tangible benefit, and concrete deadline, and finite value to intangible, long-term, and hard to put my finger on. That was challenging for me. My husband would come home; and I would think: \u201cWell, everyone\u2019s still alive!\u00a0 So, I guess that\u2019s what I did for the day.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and Sarah, a lot of moms today look at the profession of motherhood\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and they really cannot see the value in it and feel like, \u201cIf this is all I\u2019m doing, I\u2019m really not doing all I ought to be doing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes; yes\u2014oh, I cannot agree with that more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have had a number of friends\u2014the Lord has really surrounded me with women who understand the peculiar nature of that struggle. Many of them have advanced degrees like I do. I have a girlfriend who is a dentist. I have two who have master\u2019s degrees in social work. They have all given these up to stay at home with their children. We have all had the conversation: \u201cAre we doing the right thing?\u00a0 Is this important enough?\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019re going to do this for like the next 10 to 15 years; but we gave up all of this education.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve ultimately found is that the Lord uses everything leading up to motherhood in ways you <em>never<\/em> expect. He doesn\u2019t mistakes. If He\u2019s called you to a particular line of study \/ to a particular profession, you will use that later on. What He\u2019s done is said: \u201cYou are going to put this on hold because what I\u2019m doing is\u2014I am reaping a harvest of these tiny human beings, who have essential and eternal worth in My kingdom, who you will leave behind after you are gone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf the Lord tarries: \u201cThey will have their own relationship with Me, and they will go on to have their own children who will also have their own relationship with Me.\u201d\u00a0 It is the ultimate long-term investment\u2014all that means is you put what you\u2019ve learned on hold for a short period of time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, anytime we do a story like this, we are going to get emails from folks, who are going: \u201cYou know, I can\u2019t believe you guys!\u00a0 You guys need to come into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And it\u2019s interesting\u2014you mentioned a word. You said that your profession can be a calling for which you prepare to be able to fulfill. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Absolutely; no question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I believe\u2014I really believe the Bible teaches that, if you\u2019re married and you get the privilege of having children, motherhood \/ fatherhood are both callings that demand a response and a responsibility that is embraced by both a husband and a wife in that situation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0Speak to that, if you would. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely. If you undertake something, the Lord requires us to undertake things well\u2014you work as a workman who is not ashamed. Second Timothy tells us your whole heart and soul is in what you do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in the case of my raising my children, I actually found myself\u2014I talk a little bit about this in the book\u2014kind of, again, control freak\u2014trying to over-parent; right?\u00a0 So, we\u2019re going to do Mommy &amp; Me class in the morning. Then, we\u2019re going to have a healthy, organic snack. Then, we\u2019re going to do sing-along time. Then, we\u2019re going to watch <em>Baby Einstein<\/em> videos, and the house is going to be clean. And I\u2019m totally going to nail it! I have to tell you\u2014the Lord went: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Sometimes, just being with them\u2014holding them \/ listening to them\u2014is what I want from you. Sometimes, the quiet moments are just as important as the active moments.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here I left this profession of the law\u2014where I had really worked my hardest to get where I was\u2014and the Lord said, \u201cOkay; you\u2019re going to put it on hold.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnderneath that practicing of law was, really, a desire to write\u2014that\u2019s something that\u2019s kind of been in my blood for a long time, and I put that career aside. I had these children, and I started writing because I had two children on the autism spectrum. I started writing for two different blogs that minister to families with disabilities. One is SpecialNeedsParenting.net, and the other is ChosenFamilies.org. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoth of these blogs\u2014not paid\u2014just provided me with an opportunity to tell my story. The story came from the children I gave up the job to spend time with. So, everything came together at the same time. From that, the outline of this book, <em>Sand in My Sandwich<\/em>, was born because I thought: \u201cThis has been such an interesting, ordinary-but-extraordinary journey. I think other people will appreciate how to persevere in difficulty in what it\u2019s like to have kids, who are both normal and sort of extraordinary, at the same time.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, everything was not wasted. The Lord wastes nothing\u2014He wastes no hardship \/ He wastes no lesson. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>And He\u2019s very clear that, sometimes, things are uncomfortable for a period; but ultimately, His aim is to benefit and prosper us. He <em>loves<\/em> us\u2014He hears our cries \/ He covers us with His feathers. I <em>love<\/em> that analogy because it really is a parent bird shepherding his chicks underneath his wings, saying: \u201cI\u2019ve got this. I\u2019m going to cover you. It\u2019s okay.\u201d\u00a0 And that helped me do that for my own children too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We have a link on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com to the two blogs that you mentioned. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s like God\u2019s saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to cure you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cof your addiction to control by giving you two very uncontrollable kids.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>That is <em>exactly<\/em> what happened. And you know, you can make anything an idol in your life. And my previous response to handling hardship and difficulty was to <em>squeeze<\/em> it as hard as I possibly could. I thought, if I perseverated on something long enough, I could come up with a solution\u2014not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and fix it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>\u2014and fix it!\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly it: \u201cIf I just stay awake long enough at night, turning it over in my mind, I will have that bolt from the blue; and I will figure it out.\u201d\u00a0 Well, the thing about kids is they do things you don\u2019t see coming every single <em>day<\/em>. So, it\u2019s like that except times a thousand\u2014and in my case, times three\u2014so 3,000 times harder than that. So, the Lord really did see that as an issue in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t realize it was an issue until I had these kids. I thought: \u201cWell, shoot!\u00a0 I can\u2019t predict anything about this. Now, I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to handle it.\u201d I would lay in bed, going, \u201cOkay; Lord, I really need You.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s the funny thing about hardship and challenges. It\u2019s only when you are so weighed upon by challenges that you\u2019re knees are on the floor and you\u2019re going: \u201cOkay, Lord; that\u2019s it, Lord. I give up!\u00a0 You have to come up with a solution because I can\u2019t figure one out on my own.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I had a friend, who said, \u201cAnything that drives you to dependence on Jesus is a good thing\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014no matter what it feels like in the moment.\u201d\u00a0 Do you feel like, today, you are cured of your planning obsession; or are you still trying to force things into the way you wish they\u2019d happen every day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I would say: \u201cOf a 100-percent cure, I\u2019m like 80 percent there.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I think we have an inclination, as sinners, to fall back into our own ways. I really have to pray about that a lot, \u201cLord, help me not to spend time getting anxious about this;\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the Lord is very clear about worry and anxiety\u2014\u201cbut help me to just give this to You. You brought this into my life,\u201d\u2014again\u2014\u201cYou do not make mistakes. This is a part of Your divine design. I can\u2019t see it. This is a long-term race that I\u2019m in with You. So, You just bring it to fruition. I\u2019m totally relinquishing the control.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that has been\u2014it has been an ongoing struggle. I will tell you\u2014I\u2019m willing to let the laundry stack up a little bit as a former neat and control freak. You would be surprised at the amount of filth with which I am totally comfortable at this point. [Laughter] My husband was the slob going into the marriage. Now, I\u2019m like: \u201cI haven\u2019t vacuumed in a week. I won\u2019t die!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you had about 90 minutes, I\u2019d drive you north of here to my oldest daughter\u2019s house. She has seven boys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, God bless her!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014ages 15 to 1 year of age. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And if you want to see an <em>immaculate<\/em> laundry room, you\u2019re going to have to go to the laundry mat to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Somewhere else. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, good!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s not going to be at her house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Because I had a moment, where I thought, \u201cDear Father, if he says that that laundry room is immaculate, I\u2019m just going to die!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, it is not\u2014it is not that at all. In fact, I\u2019ve never forgotten this statement: \u201cA clean house is a sign of a life misspent.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, wow!\u00a0 I need to write that down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want you to go back to your book for a second. You\u2019re talking about messes; and I mean, they come in all shapes and sizes with two autistic kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and a little girl sandwiched in between, whose name is Grace. What\u2019s the major lesson on loving\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, my gosh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that you\u2019ve embraced?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I like to joke that I could have titled the book, <em>Things Fall Apart<\/em>; but apparently, that title is already taken\u2014and my editor frowns on things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my lesson really is that chaos can be beautiful. Sometimes, it is just order in disguise because the Lord permits things in our lives that appear to fall apart; but His design is perfect, and it is always there no matter the challenges we face. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I want you to hear something as you\u2019re saying that\u2014and this is going to take our engineer Keith a little work to dig this up\u2014but as you\u2019re describing this, I\u2019m thinking back to an interview that we did in the first year <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was on the air. We called out to some moms in the middle of their day. We just said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was called \u201cMom Check.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; we just said, \u201cSo, what\u2019s going on at your house, and how is life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I want you to hear how one of these moms answered because it has stuck with me for more than two decades, now, as she described her day. I gave up cleaning, gave up laundry, and just sat on the floor. So, there\u2019s a huge blanket that covers the whole living room floor; and his toys are everywhere. And my little daughter is learning how to feed her babies. They are lined up in a row, and she\u2019s giving them bottles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s just starting to pretend\u2014so she has my shoes all over the floor\u2014and purses. She\u2019s been grocery shopping today. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; I remember it well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda: <\/strong>And I guess books\u2014and the dishes are still in the sink. [Laughter] Am I supposed to tell you where all my dirty laundry is? [Laughter]\u00a0 Don\u2019t do that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMom, one of the things I appreciated most was your willingness to invest time. You were an ever-present mom, who gave up her own job to stay home with us despite your own career aspirations. You were everything that I aspired to be when I had my own children\u2014you were hands-on, you were loving, you were affectionate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe probably tested your patience. I remember particularly a game of hostage where my brothers tied me in the basement to a chair, and then, refused to tell you where I was because I was in charge of babysitting them. I have not forgotten the grace and strength with which you parented and weathered the storms of what were, certainly, difficult moments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think about your own hardships\u2014a mom and two brothers all diagnosed with cancer within nine months, while you had small children. Yet, we still knew you loved us. You modeled for us perseverance in trials and difficulties because it was clear God was in control no matter how hard things got. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they were hard because of regular, neuro-typical children or if they were hard because three family members had been diagnosed with cancer, your response was always the same\u2014and that was to continue loving and following Jesus because His love for us never failed. So, thank you for showing me that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I just have to know if the laundry got done in your house. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>She gave it up at a certain point. I will tell you that I think she had a very similar walk\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it was:\u201cI think I\u2019m a control freak. This is really hard.\u201d\u00a0 Then, at a certain point, \u201cOh, forget about it!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I want to know how you were released as a hostage from the basement. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, I was trying to use a more\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Our guest\u2019s laughter is giving her away. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014trying to use a more gentle term. It\u2019s the term\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, it\u2019s alright; I\u2019ve heard it before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>She uses the term in her book, planning obsession. I\u2019m just wondering, \u201cHow you deal with that, when you\u2019ve got two kids who are on the autism spectrum, and a third child who\u2019s right in the middle of all of that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the ages of all three are?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Eleven, eight, and six.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Wow! Well, it results\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it results in, Bob, a book called <em>Sand in My Sandwich: And Other Motherhood Messes I\u2019m Learning to Love<\/em>. Now, that\u2019s a good wrap up to that book title\u2014that you\u2019re <em>learning<\/em> to love. It doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve got it nailed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I\u2019m a recovering control freak\u2014as in: \u201cI\u2019m not totally cured yet, but I\u2019m trying.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Well, that\u2019s the voice of Sarah Parshall Perry. She and her husband Matt have been married since 2001\u2014live in Maryland with these three young children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things you talked about, early in your book, was that you went to law school at UVA, the University of Virginia. And after you had your\u2014who is now your oldest son, Noah, you quickly stepped out of the profession. Why did you do that?\u2014because here is all this training that you had. You\u2019d gotten married later in life. Why did you step out of the profession of being an attorney?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh boy!\u00a0 For a very simple reason\u2014I was blindsided by how much I loved the baby they put in my arms. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you could make all the plans you want\u2014in fact, I had very foolishly decided: \u201cWell, if I get a raise\u2014that means that they value my input. And maybe, I\u2019ll take that as a sign to go back to work.\u201d\u00a0 I remember, when they laid him in my arms, looking up at Matt, going, \u201cI think I need to call and put my two weeks\u2019 notice in.\u201d\u00a0 It just was, without a question, the easiest decision I\u2019ve ever had to make. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Even with all the investment of the years, and the sweat, and the toil over those papers you wrote in law school?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, and the bar exam\u2014which if I had an option to negotiate with the Lord on workload, I would trade the bar exam again for what I do on a regular basis with these three kids\u2014but I have to tell you\u2014it was such a decision that was made with complete clarity. I prayed about it, and Matt and I <em>knew<\/em> we\u2019d have to make sacrifices. We cashed out a 401k, and we sold our car. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe made some things \/ you know, some decisions that hurt a little bit; but it was such peace about the decision. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Hot dogs and mac and cheese. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Hot dogs, and mac and cheese, and ramen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes!\u00a0 I want to go back just to the decision that you made to have children because you and Matt married later in life. Was it a given that you guys were going to have kids?\u00a0 Did you like them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I had always loved kids \/ <em>knew<\/em> I would have them, but really had set this internal path\u2014again, see \u201ccontrol freak\u201d in footnotes\u2014that I was going to have children, and then, I was going to go back to work. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it is very difficult to manage\u2014for those working mothers, who are listening\u2014very hard to do both because you don\u2019t get to come home from a job and suddenly go: \u201cOkay; I\u2019m clocking off. Somebody bring me my slippers and my paper.\u201d\u00a0 Mom is always Mom, whether she is in an office or whether she is at home all day with children. That\u2019s actually something I address in my next book, which is coming out next year\u2014<em>Mommy Needs a Raise (Because Quitting\u2019s Not an Option)<\/em>\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you don\u2019t get to leave!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to kind of figure out the balance between work and family and what it feels like to give it up. I had to figure out where I was going to find worth because it wasn\u2019t in a paycheck, it wasn\u2019t my signature on a brief, it wasn\u2019t in a raise, and it wasn\u2019t in a promotion\u2014it was in three little children. I went from tangible benefit, and concrete deadline, and finite value to intangible, long-term, and hard to put my finger on. That was challenging for me. My husband would come home; and I would think: \u201cWell, everyone\u2019s still alive!\u00a0 So, I guess that\u2019s what I did for the day.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, and Sarah, a lot of moms today look at the profession of motherhood\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014and they really cannot see the value in it and feel like, \u201cIf this is all I\u2019m doing, I\u2019m really not doing all I ought to be doing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes; yes\u2014oh, I cannot agree with that more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have had a number of friends\u2014the Lord has really surrounded me with women who understand the peculiar nature of that struggle. Many of them have advanced degrees like I do. I have a girlfriend who is a dentist. I have two who have master\u2019s degrees in social work. They have all given these up to stay at home with their children. We have all had the conversation: \u201cAre we doing the right thing?\u00a0 Is this important enough?\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019re going to do this for like the next 10 to 15 years; but we gave up all of this education.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve ultimately found is that the Lord uses everything leading up to motherhood in ways you <em>never<\/em> expect. He doesn\u2019t mistakes. If He\u2019s called you to a particular line of study \/ to a particular profession, you will use that later on. What He\u2019s done is said: \u201cYou are going to put this on hold because what I\u2019m doing is\u2014I am reaping a harvest of these tiny human beings, who have essential and eternal worth in My kingdom, who you will leave behind after you are gone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf the Lord tarries: \u201cThey will have their own relationship with Me, and they will go on to have their own children who will also have their own relationship with Me.\u201d\u00a0 It is the ultimate long-term investment\u2014all that means is you put what you\u2019ve learned on hold for a short period of time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, anytime we do a story like this, we are going to get emails from folks, who are going: \u201cYou know, I can\u2019t believe you guys!\u00a0 You guys need to come into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And it\u2019s interesting\u2014you mentioned a word. You said that your profession can be a calling for which you prepare to be able to fulfill. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Absolutely; no question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I believe\u2014I really believe the Bible teaches that, if you\u2019re married and you get the privilege of having children, motherhood \/ fatherhood are both callings that demand a response and a responsibility that is embraced by both a husband and a wife in that situation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0Speak to that, if you would. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, absolutely. If you undertake something, the Lord requires us to undertake things well\u2014you work as a workman who is not ashamed. Second Timothy tells us your whole heart and soul is in what you do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd in the case of my raising my children, I actually found myself\u2014I talk a little bit about this in the book\u2014kind of, again, control freak\u2014trying to over-parent; right?\u00a0 So, we\u2019re going to do Mommy &amp; Me class in the morning. Then, we\u2019re going to have a healthy, organic snack. Then, we\u2019re going to do sing-along time. Then, we\u2019re going to watch <em>Baby Einstein<\/em> videos, and the house is going to be clean. And I\u2019m totally going to nail it! I have to tell you\u2014the Lord went: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Sometimes, just being with them\u2014holding them \/ listening to them\u2014is what I want from you. Sometimes, the quiet moments are just as important as the active moments.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here I left this profession of the law\u2014where I had really worked my hardest to get where I was\u2014and the Lord said, \u201cOkay; you\u2019re going to put it on hold.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnderneath that practicing of law was, really, a desire to write\u2014that\u2019s something that\u2019s kind of been in my blood for a long time, and I put that career aside. I had these children, and I started writing because I had two children on the autism spectrum. I started writing for two different blogs that minister to families with disabilities. One is SpecialNeedsParenting.net, and the other is ChosenFamilies.org. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoth of these blogs\u2014not paid\u2014just provided me with an opportunity to tell my story. The story came from the children I gave up the job to spend time with. So, everything came together at the same time. From that, the outline of this book, <em>Sand in My Sandwich<\/em>, was born because I thought: \u201cThis has been such an interesting, ordinary-but-extraordinary journey. I think other people will appreciate how to persevere in difficulty in what it\u2019s like to have kids, who are both normal and sort of extraordinary, at the same time.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, everything was not wasted. The Lord wastes nothing\u2014He wastes no hardship \/ He wastes no lesson. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>And He\u2019s very clear that, sometimes, things are uncomfortable for a period; but ultimately, His aim is to benefit and prosper us. He <em>loves<\/em> us\u2014He hears our cries \/ He covers us with His feathers. I <em>love<\/em> that analogy because it really is a parent bird shepherding his chicks underneath his wings, saying: \u201cI\u2019ve got this. I\u2019m going to cover you. It\u2019s okay.\u201d\u00a0 And that helped me do that for my own children too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We have a link on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com to the two blogs that you mentioned. We\u2019re talking with Sarah Perry, who is the author of the book, <em>Sand in My Sandwich<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just find it really interesting, in God\u2019s providence and design, that someone with a planning obsession has two kids on the autism spectrum. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Right! [Laughter]\u2014who you cannot predict anything about! [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It\u2019s like God\u2019s saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to cure you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cof your addiction to control by giving you two very uncontrollable kids.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>That is <em>exactly<\/em> what happened. And you know, you can make anything an idol in your life. And my previous response to handling hardship and difficulty was to <em>squeeze<\/em> it as hard as I possibly could. I thought, if I perseverated on something long enough, I could come up with a solution\u2014not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and fix it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>\u2014and fix it!\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly it: \u201cIf I just stay awake long enough at night, turning it over in my mind, I will have that bolt from the blue; and I will figure it out.\u201d\u00a0 Well, the thing about kids is they do things you don\u2019t see coming every single <em>day<\/em>. So, it\u2019s like that except times a thousand\u2014and in my case, times three\u2014so 3,000 times harder than that. So, the Lord really did see that as an issue in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t realize it was an issue until I had these kids. I thought: \u201cWell, shoot!\u00a0 I can\u2019t predict anything about this. Now, I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to handle it.\u201d I would lay in bed, going, \u201cOkay; Lord, I really need You.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s the funny thing about hardship and challenges. It\u2019s only when you are so weighed upon by challenges that you\u2019re knees are on the floor and you\u2019re going: \u201cOkay, Lord; that\u2019s it, Lord. I give up!\u00a0 You have to come up with a solution because I can\u2019t figure one out on my own.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I had a friend, who said, \u201cAnything that drives you to dependence on Jesus is a good thing\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>That\u2019s it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014no matter what it feels like in the moment.\u201d\u00a0 Do you feel like, today, you are cured of your planning obsession; or are you still trying to force things into the way you wish they\u2019d happen every day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I would say: \u201cOf a 100-percent cure, I\u2019m like 80 percent there.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I think we have an inclination, as sinners, to fall back into our own ways. I really have to pray about that a lot, \u201cLord, help me not to spend time getting anxious about this;\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the Lord is very clear about worry and anxiety\u2014\u201cbut help me to just give this to You. You brought this into my life,\u201d\u2014again\u2014\u201cYou do not make mistakes. This is a part of Your divine design. I can\u2019t see it. This is a long-term race that I\u2019m in with You. So, You just bring it to fruition. I\u2019m totally relinquishing the control.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that has been\u2014it has been an ongoing struggle. I will tell you\u2014I\u2019m willing to let the laundry stack up a little bit as a former neat and control freak. You would be surprised at the amount of filth with which I am totally comfortable at this point. [Laughter] My husband was the slob going into the marriage. Now, I\u2019m like: \u201cI haven\u2019t vacuumed in a week. I won\u2019t die!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>If you had about 90 minutes, I\u2019d drive you north of here to my oldest daughter\u2019s house. She has seven boys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, God bless her!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014ages 15 to 1 year of age. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And if you want to see an <em>immaculate<\/em> laundry room, you\u2019re going to have to go to the laundry mat to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Somewhere else. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, good!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s not going to be at her house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Because I had a moment, where I thought, \u201cDear Father, if he says that that laundry room is immaculate, I\u2019m just going to die!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, it is not\u2014it is not that at all. In fact, I\u2019ve never forgotten this statement: \u201cA clean house is a sign of a life misspent.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, wow!\u00a0 I need to write that down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I want you to go back to your book for a second. You\u2019re talking about messes; and I mean, they come in all shapes and sizes with two autistic kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014and a little girl sandwiched in between, whose name is Grace. What\u2019s the major lesson on loving\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, my gosh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014that you\u2019ve embraced?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I like to joke that I could have titled the book, <em>Things Fall Apart<\/em>; but apparently, that title is already taken\u2014and my editor frowns on things like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my lesson really is that chaos can be beautiful. Sometimes, it is just order in disguise because the Lord permits things in our lives that appear to fall apart; but His design is perfect, and it is always there no matter the challenges we face. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I want you to hear something as you\u2019re saying that\u2014and this is going to take our engineer Keith a little work to dig this up\u2014but as you\u2019re describing this, I\u2019m thinking back to an interview that we did in the first year <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was on the air. We called out to some moms in the middle of their day. We just said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It was called \u201cMom Check.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes; we just said, \u201cSo, what\u2019s going on at your house, and how is life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>Oh, wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I want you to hear how one of these moms answered because it has stuck with me for more than two decades, now, as she described her day. I gave up cleaning, gave up laundry, and just sat on the floor. So, there\u2019s a huge blanket that covers the whole living room floor; and his toys are everywhere. And my little daughter is learning how to feed her babies. They are lined up in a row, and she\u2019s giving them bottles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s just starting to pretend\u2014so she has my shoes all over the floor\u2014and purses. She\u2019s been grocery shopping today. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; I remember it well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda: <\/strong>And I guess books\u2014and the dishes are still in the sink. [Laughter] Am I supposed to tell you where all my dirty laundry is? [Laughter]\u00a0 Don\u2019t do that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMom, one of the things I appreciated most was your willingness to invest time. You were an ever-present mom, who gave up her own job to stay home with us despite your own career aspirations. You were everything that I aspired to be when I had my own children\u2014you were hands-on, you were loving, you were affectionate. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe probably tested your patience. I remember particularly a game of hostage where my brothers tied me in the basement to a chair, and then, refused to tell you where I was because I was in charge of babysitting them. I have not forgotten the grace and strength with which you parented and weathered the storms of what were, certainly, difficult moments. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think about your own hardships\u2014a mom and two brothers all diagnosed with cancer within nine months, while you had small children. Yet, we still knew you loved us. You modeled for us perseverance in trials and difficulties because it was clear God was in control no matter how hard things got. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they were hard because of regular, neuro-typical children or if they were hard because three family members had been diagnosed with cancer, your response was always the same\u2014and that was to continue loving and following Jesus because His love for us never failed. So, thank you for showing me that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I just have to know if the laundry got done in your house. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>She gave it up at a certain point. I will tell you that I think she had a very similar walk\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it was:\u201cI think I\u2019m a control freak. This is really hard.\u201d\u00a0 Then, at a certain point, \u201cOh, forget about it!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And I want to know how you were released as a hostage from the basement. How long did they keep you down there?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sarah: <\/strong>I heard my parents upstairs, and I was probably 13 or so at the time. But you know, two brothers\u2014and my sister had to have been in on it. She was somewhere in the house, probably scoping lookout because my parents were on their way back. But I remember my father\u2019s voice upstairs, saying, \u201cGo downstairs and untie her, right now!\u201d\u00a0 So, I was in the basement.
