don\u2019t you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh my goodness\u2014especially today, Bob.\u00a0 I mean, you think of what is swirling around teenagers today\u2014the whole issue of not just merely, \u201cAm I going to sleep with the opposite sex?\u201d but the whole idea and concept of sexual fluidity and trying to hammer out who they are if they attempt to follow Jesus Christ in a culture that punishes those who do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, then, so many young people, who stay connected to church all the way through high school, head off to college and that connection is quickly and easily broken. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think part of the reason it is\u2014is because they never really firmly grappled with \u201cWhat is their spiritual identity?\u201d For you, you had grown up in a home where you went to Sunday school but it took college before you wrestled with that; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It took two years of college, and I\u2014if you\u2019d taken a snapshot of my life in my freshman or sophomore year, you\u2019d have said: \u201cWho is he?\u00a0 Where\u2019d he come from?\u201d\u00a0 I basically was lost, confused, and frankly, had to come back to the faith of my childhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s the key that parents need to hear\u2014is that parents must be faithful in continuing to teach what the Scripture teaches about these major issues that kids are facing today and not back away from it, even if they don\u2019t know all the answers. That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do in this new resource that FamilyLife has created called <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s actually two different resources\u2014one, for young men, ages 14 to 16 \/ and another for young ladies, the same age\u201414 to 16. It, really, is an extension of a highly-successful series called <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that we\u2019ve had\u2014now, for 15 years\u2014over a half-million young people have been through that with their parents.\u00a0 We\u2019re just trying to replicate that around some of the major issues of identity that young people are facing today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our team has created five different audio sessions. This is designed for a father and a son or a mother and a daughter to get away together.\u00a0 You listen together to the audio sessions that we\u2019ve created. The audio sessions are to set you up, as a parent, to be able to have some deep conversations with your son or your daughter around critical issues that they\u2019re going to be going through during their middle adolescence\u201414\/15 years of age.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we\u2019ve got Michelle Hill with us, along with John Majors.\u00a0 These are colleagues, here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 You guys have both been here more than a decade, serving alongside the rest of the team. You\u2019ve broken this down into, really, five major areas that young people are going through during this middle adolescent period that a mom and a dad should interact over.\u00a0 John, what are those five areas?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the big theme of identity we\u2019re going to keep hitting over and over again: \u201cWho am I? What makes up my life?\u201d Independence: \u201cHow do I become my own person?\u201d Gender identity\u2014a lot of the idea of this kit really flowed out of: \u201cHow do you help your child know what it means to be a man or a woman?\u00a0 What does the Bible say about that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you have spiritual identity: \u201cHow do I make my faith my own?\u201d\u00a0 Relational identity\u2014the people around you make up so much of who you are \/ your friends, your peers, your mentors in life, and then, your relationships with the opposite sex\u2014that\u2019s always a topic that young people like to hear about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Their interest is peaked; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then, mission: \u201cWhat\u2019s your mission in life?\u00a0 What has God called you uniquely to do as a person?\u201d\u00a0 In the midst of that, we talk about \u201cThere are some things that can derail you, that can take you off course, that keep you from pursuing that mission.\u201d We want to address those and just make them wise about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We talk about one of these components being the issue of spiritual identity.\u00a0 And again, in the middle teenage years, that\u2019s a key transition time for a child to go from kind of a faith that they\u2019ve been imitating to a faith that they own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Michelle, I love how you spell this out in the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> resource for young women.\u00a0 You share your own story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I was riveted.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to let our listeners hear your transitional journey and what we hope will be a model for young people, listening, to say: \u201cOh; am I here or am I there?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHave I made my faith my own, or am I still just kind of imitating my parents\u2019 faith?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Excerpt from <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Narrator:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in Iowa.\u00a0 One day, in Vacation Bible School, somebody told her to give her heart to Jesus.\u00a0 So, she did because that\u2019s what good little, obedient girls do. Years later, when she went off to university\u2014where, of course, she went to a Christian university because that, too, is what good little religious girls do\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, off I went to university.\u00a0 I was 18.\u00a0 I was pure.\u00a0 I was religious, and I was proud of it <em>until<\/em> I met Diana.\u00a0 Diana was my roommate. Diana was different because it was obvious that she would go anywhere and do <em>anything<\/em> for Jesus.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t just some good little religious girl.\u00a0 She seemed to <em>own<\/em> her faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Preacher:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many of you are just playing at being Christians?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember one day we were sitting in chapel\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Preacher:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many of you will give up everything\u2014your life, your fortune\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and the speaker was really challenging us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Preacher:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many of you believe in Jesus Christ enough that you would come up front, right here, right now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Diana\u2014she sprinted to the front before the preacher could even finish repeating himself.\u00a0 And me\u2014\u201cIt ain\u2019t happening.\u201d\u00a0 See, I knew where I was going\u2014I was on my way to a career in broadcasting. I didn\u2019t need any help from Jesus to figure that out!\u00a0 Besides, I keep all those religious rules; remember?\u2014well, most of them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, I sort of drifted out of the room at probably the first polite moment and promptly ran into Diana.\u00a0 She was disappointed, \u201cHow could you not come up?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was mystified because Jesus was <em>everything<\/em> to her.\u00a0 She really loved Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, fast-forward three years\u2014well, go-anywhere-do-anything-for-Jesus Diana was stuck in nowhere Tennessee.\u00a0 I had fulfilled my dream to be in radio.\u00a0 Well, it was not exactly a dream job; but I was working in missionary radio in <em>Alaska<\/em>.\u00a0 My broadcast day started off at 4:30 each morning when I\u2019d roll out of bed in my little garage apartment and head for the station in my four-wheel drive truck, arrive at the last possible second, push some buttons, and read the weather. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t think much about Jesus; but when I did, I generally felt pretty good about my missionary life: \u201cLook, Mom! Look, Dad!\u00a0 I\u2019m a religious missionary!\u201d\u00a0 It was a great life until about 11:15 every day when <em>she<\/em> would show up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIf anyone wants to follow in My footsteps, he must give up his right to himself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 And her voice was so <em>annoying<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cTake up the cross and follow Me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Day after day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cTake up the cross.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014broadcast after broadcast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIf anyone wants to follow in My footsteps, he must give up his right to himself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Since I was busy with this important religious work, I usually tried to tune her program out; but one day, she said something like this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once upon a time, before you were born, there were in Ecuador a tribe of so-called savages\u2014they were naked, they used stone tools, and they killed strangers.\u00a0 Nobody had ever gone into their territory and come out alive.\u00a0 Missionaries had been praying\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 What?!\u00a0 Go out and not come back?\u00a0 Is she crazy?\u00a0 I confess that I felt the earth shift\u2014maybe, a little.\u00a0 Anyway, something weird did happen.\u00a0 My boxy little religious world\u2014\u201cLook, Mom! Look, Dad!\u00a0 I\u2019m a religious missionary!\u201d\u2014got pounded by a series of storms.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEver so carefully, Elisabeth Elliot put the mortar of real faith in between the bricks of my walls. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhere my bricks were stacked right, she cemented them together with Scripture.\u00a0 Where they were stacked wrong, she set them right.\u00a0 Sometimes, she was <em>blunt<\/em>; but she was <em>always<\/em> faithful to the Jesus she loved.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt this point, I feel like I need to give you a little of Elisabeth\u2019s college backstory.\u00a0 That\u2019s where she met Jim Elliot.\u00a0 Yes, he was all-in for Jesus; and yes, he was the <em>best<\/em>-looking guy on her college campus.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember Memorial Day 1948, just before I was to graduate. Jim asked me to go for a walk with him\u2014\u201cJim Elliot asking me to go for a walk?!\u201d\u2014I nearly died.\u00a0 One night, we wandered into a cemetery and found ourselves sitting on a convenient marble slab. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat were we to make of this tornado of passion we suddenly felt for each other?\u00a0 Did it mean that God wanted us to forget all the agonies we\u2019d gone through over our singleness struggles and just fall into each other arms?\u201d\u00a0 I said that it didn\u2019t really make a whole lot of sense to me. We sat there in silence; and finally, he said: \u201cYou\u2019re right.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d\u00a0 There was another long silence.\u00a0 Then, suddenly, we realized that the moon had risen behind us and was casting the shadow of a stone cross between us on that slab.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that shadow of a cross foretold her future, but not like she first imagined.\u00a0 You see Elisabeth eventually did marry Jim Elliot.\u00a0 It started out like a beautiful storybook; but within a couple of years, Jim laid dead on a riverbank in remote Ecuador.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was pierced with spears from the Auca people that he had gone to serve.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith her missionary husband dead and a new baby on her hip, Elisabeth had a choice to make: \u201cWould she go home, or would she stay and serve?\u201d\u00a0 What would you do?!\u00a0 Elisabeth\u2014she took the gospel to them\u2014hardships, and suffering, and all \/ no matter the cost!\u00a0 What about you?\u00a0 Do you love God enough to surrender everything to Him?\u2014\u00a0 your plans \/ your dreams?\u00a0 Do you love Him with more passion than your latest tweet, or is Jesus just a list of rules and right answers in youth group?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor this good little girl from Iowa, it has been a <em>long<\/em> spiritual journey\u2014from a rule-keeping little girl to a prideful missionary in Alaska\u2014to where I sit today, talking with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlong the way, I learned how to own my faith in little steps\u2014from my college roommate Diana, from my radio mentor Elisabeth Elliot, and from some other significant people in my life whose identity\u2014well, might surprise you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few years ago, I flew into the very same jungle landing strip that the Elliots used to first reach the Auca in 1955.\u00a0 There, I met the Auca.\u00a0 We call them by the proper name now\u2014the Huaorani.\u00a0 These people were\u2014they were amazing\u2014and they showed me again what it really meant to truly love Jesus, just like Elisabeth and just like Diana.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, and Diana\u2014Diana married her college sweetheart.\u00a0 She and Donald have three beautiful girls.\u00a0 Somehow, she never made it to the so-called mission field; but it turns out that they were her mission field right up until the day that she went home to be with Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was just 31. The brain cancer that killed Diana\u2019s body\u2014it never robbed her soul of her passion for Him.\u00a0 Her face radiated Jesus until the day she died, and she left this earth still <em>totally<\/em> in love with Him.\u00a0 Diana left behind three daughters, and they\u2019re about your age right now.\u00a0 And you guessed it\u2014they deeply love Jesus, just like their mom.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a journey.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been listening to Michelle Hill from <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> share what was really transitional in your life \/ a transition from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014well, you described it as a good church girl to somebody who was sold out for Jesus.\u00a0 Those were the two points on the compass for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and I would have thought that, at 22 years old, I had it all figured out; and I really thought that, since I was a missionary, my life was in Him\u2014I thought: \u201cI\u2019ve got this.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Christian.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s your identity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s my identity.\u00a0 I\u2019m a missionary.\u00a0 I am <em>doing<\/em> great things for God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But what was missing?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was His heart \/ it was humility to understand that I needed to be sold out.\u00a0 What was missing was a love for Christ and knowing God\u2014knowing who He was\u2014and walking in that and having my identity firmly rooted in Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>, the travel journal that is created for the young woman, who is going through this with her mom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you quote Elisabeth Elliot with a great quote about surrendering your heart to Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOne does not surrender a life in an instant.\u00a0 That, which is life-long, can only be surrendered in a lifetime.\u201d That\u2019s what I was missing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think, for parents\u2014again, who are entrusted as the guardian of their children\u2019s souls for, at least, the first 18 years of life as they shape these arrows before they let them go and fly into adulthood\u2014this handoff that we\u2019re talking about here, as much as is possible\u2014needs to be nurtured, and cared for, and guided, and directed by a mom and a dad with their son \/ their daughter and direct them in the right way and have these conversations and not be afraid to discuss doubt,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014fear, questions that cannot be answered on this side of heaven, and be honest about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we really try to drive that home in addressing: \u201cWhat are you going to look to for your direction in life?\u00a0 It\u2019s not just the habits you picked up at church or what your parents believe.\u00a0 That gives you a foundation; but ultimately, it\u2019s got to be God\u2019s Word, and you\u2019ve got to know it and believe it.\u00a0 That is, ultimately, going to be your authority in life.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you know Christ.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you believe in Him and love Him.\u201d We keep pushing back to the authority of Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I can hear in my head as you\u2019re talking about that [singing]: \u201cThe Word of God is living and active and sharper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go, Bob!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cthan any two-edged sword.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the verse that is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Close; yes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that\u2019s the verse.\u00a0 [Laughter] That may not be the melody, but that\u2019s the verse that is put to music as a memory verse as a part of Session 3 in <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>.\u00a0 There are memory verses all the way through this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what you want a young person to do is recognize: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is where I go \/ this is the anchor point for my soul.\u00a0 And if I\u2019m going to have my identity rooted in Christ, I\u2019m going to have to know the Christ who is revealed in Scripture. I\u2019m going to have to, not just believe the Bible, but obey the Bible and walk according to the Scriptures.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; \u201cWhat are you going to follow?\u00a0 Everybody follows something \/ everybody obeys something\u2014it could be yourself, it could be a movie star that you admire, it could be just what you heard from a pastor or your friends\u2014but the only thing that\u2019s going to give you a solid foundation for your life is God\u2019s Word.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anchor your kids\u2014your young men and your young ladies\u2014in the Book.\u00a0 Train them to think from the Scripture, not to the Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And again, the whole focus here is to get a young person to transition from, what I would say is, imitative Christianity to independent Christianity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s living a life of surrender and picking up your cross and following Christ for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s nobody better than a mom or a dad to be in that conversation with their 15-year-old.\u00a0 We\u2019re hoping that this spring and summer there would be thousands of young people and their parents heading off for a two-day adventure somewhere\u2014maybe, you\u2019re going hiking somewhere; maybe, you\u2019re going to a sporting event; maybe, you\u2019re going on a shopping trip\u2014I don\u2019t know what it is that your son or daughter would get excited about, but plan a two-day getaway where you\u2019re going to drive to do something special. for young people\u2014not just in our day but probably in every generation\u2014there is a critical spiritual transition point during the teen years that, even if they\u2019ve grown up in a home, going to Sunday school, going to Bible camp in the summer \/ whatever their spiritual trajectory has been\u2014there are still some key issues they\u2019ve got to grapple with in their teen years; church all the way through high school, head off to college and that connection is quickly and easily broken. they never really firmly grappled with \u201cWhat is their spiritual identity?\u201d For you, you had grown up in a home where you went to Sunday school but it took college before you wrestled with that; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It took two years of college, and I\u2014if you\u2019d taken a snapshot of my life in my freshman or sophomore year, you\u2019d have said: \u201cWho is he?\u00a0 Where\u2019d he come from?\u201d\u00a0 I basically was lost, confused, and frankly, had to come back to the faith of my childhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s the key that parents need to hear\u2014is that parents must be faithful in continuing to teach what the Scripture teaches about these major issues that kids are facing today and not back away from it, even if they don\u2019t know all the answers. That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do in this new resource that FamilyLife has created called <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s actually two different resources\u2014one, for young men, ages 14 to 16 \/ and another for young ladies, the same age\u201414 to 16. It, really, is an extension of a highly-successful series called <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> that we\u2019ve had\u2014now, for 15 years\u2014over a half-million young people have been through that with their parents.\u00a0 We\u2019re just trying to replicate that around some of the major issues of identity that young people are facing today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our team has created five different audio sessions. This is designed for a father and a son or a mother and a daughter to get away together.\u00a0 You listen together to the audio sessions that we\u2019ve created. The audio sessions are to set you up, as a parent, to be able to have some deep conversations with your son or your daughter around critical issues that they\u2019re going to be going through during their middle adolescence\u201414\/15 years of age.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd we\u2019ve got Michelle Hill with us, along with John Majors.\u00a0 These are colleagues, here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 You guys have both been here more than a decade, serving alongside the rest of the team. You\u2019ve broken this down into, really, five major areas that young people are going through during this middle adolescent period that a mom and a dad should interact over.\u00a0 John, what are those five areas?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the big theme of identity we\u2019re going to keep hitting over and over again: \u201cWho am I? What makes up my life?\u201d Independence: \u201cHow do I become my own person?\u201d Gender identity\u2014a lot of the idea of this kit really flowed out of: \u201cHow do you help your child know what it means to be a man or a woman?\u00a0 What does the Bible say about that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you have spiritual identity: \u201cHow do I make my faith my own?\u201d\u00a0 Relational identity\u2014the people around you make up so much of who you are \/ your friends, your peers, your mentors in life, and then, your relationships with the opposite sex\u2014that\u2019s always a topic that young people like to hear about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Their interest is peaked; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then, mission: \u201cWhat\u2019s your mission in life?\u00a0 What has God called you uniquely to do as a person?\u201d\u00a0 In the midst of that, we talk about \u201cThere are some things that can derail you, that can take you off course, that keep you from pursuing that mission.\u201d We want to address those and just make them wise about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We talk about one of these components being the issue of spiritual identity.\u00a0 And again, in the middle teenage years, that\u2019s a key transition time for a child to go from kind of a faith that they\u2019ve been imitating to a faith that they own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Michelle, I love how you spell this out in the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> resource for young women.\u00a0 You share your own story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I was riveted.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to let our listeners hear your transitional journey and what we hope will be a model for young people, listening, to say: \u201cOh; am I here or am I there?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHave I made my faith my own, or am I still just kind of imitating my parents\u2019 faith?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Excerpt from <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Narrator:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in Iowa.\u00a0 One day, in Vacation Bible School, somebody told her to give her heart to Jesus.\u00a0 So, she did because that\u2019s what good little, obedient girls do. Years later, when she went off to university\u2014where, of course, she went to a Christian university because that, too, is what good little religious girls do\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, off I went to university.\u00a0 I was 18.\u00a0 I was pure.\u00a0 I was religious, and I was proud of it <em>until<\/em> I met Diana.\u00a0 Diana was my roommate. Diana was different because it was obvious that she would go anywhere and do <em>anything<\/em> for Jesus.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t just some good little religious girl.\u00a0 She seemed to <em>own<\/em> her faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Preacher:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many of you are just playing at being Christians?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember one day we were sitting in chapel\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Preacher:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many of you will give up everything\u2014your life, your fortune\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and the speaker was really challenging us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Preacher:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many of you believe in Jesus Christ enough that you would come up front, right here, right now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Diana\u2014she sprinted to the front before the preacher could even finish repeating himself.\u00a0 And me\u2014\u201cIt ain\u2019t happening.\u201d\u00a0 See, I knew where I was going\u2014I was on my way to a career in broadcasting. I didn\u2019t need any help from Jesus to figure that out!\u00a0 Besides, I keep all those religious rules; remember?\u2014well, most of them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, I sort of drifted out of the room at probably the first polite moment and promptly ran into Diana.\u00a0 She was disappointed, \u201cHow could you not come up?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was mystified because Jesus was <em>everything<\/em> to her.\u00a0 She really loved Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, fast-forward three years\u2014well, go-anywhere-do-anything-for-Jesus Diana was stuck in nowhere Tennessee.\u00a0 I had fulfilled my dream to be in radio.\u00a0 Well, it was not exactly a dream job; but I was working in missionary radio in <em>Alaska<\/em>.\u00a0 My broadcast day started off at 4:30 each morning when I\u2019d roll out of bed in my little garage apartment and head for the station in my four-wheel drive truck, arrive at the last possible second, push some buttons, and read the weather. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t think much about Jesus; but when I did, I generally felt pretty good about my missionary life: \u201cLook, Mom! Look, Dad!\u00a0 I\u2019m a religious missionary!\u201d\u00a0 It was a great life until about 11:15 every day when <em>she<\/em> would show up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIf anyone wants to follow in My footsteps, he must give up his right to himself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 And her voice was so <em>annoying<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cTake up the cross and follow Me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Day after day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cTake up the cross.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014broadcast after broadcast\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIf anyone wants to follow in My footsteps, he must give up his right to himself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Since I was busy with this important religious work, I usually tried to tune her program out; but one day, she said something like this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once upon a time, before you were born, there were in Ecuador a tribe of so-called savages\u2014they were naked, they used stone tools, and they killed strangers.\u00a0 Nobody had ever gone into their territory and come out alive.\u00a0 Missionaries had been praying\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 What?!\u00a0 Go out and not come back?\u00a0 Is she crazy?\u00a0 I confess that I felt the earth shift\u2014maybe, a little.\u00a0 Anyway, something weird did happen.\u00a0 My boxy little religious world\u2014\u201cLook, Mom! Look, Dad!\u00a0 I\u2019m a religious missionary!\u201d\u2014got pounded by a series of storms.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEver so carefully, Elisabeth Elliot put the mortar of real faith in between the bricks of my walls. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhere my bricks were stacked right, she cemented them together with Scripture.\u00a0 Where they were stacked wrong, she set them right.\u00a0 Sometimes, she was <em>blunt<\/em>; but she was <em>always<\/em> faithful to the Jesus she loved.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt this point, I feel like I need to give you a little of Elisabeth\u2019s college backstory.\u00a0 That\u2019s where she met Jim Elliot.\u00a0 Yes, he was all-in for Jesus; and yes, he was the <em>best<\/em>-looking guy on her college campus.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember Memorial Day 1948, just before I was to graduate. Jim asked me to go for a walk with him\u2014\u201cJim Elliot asking me to go for a walk?!\u201d\u2014I nearly died.\u00a0 One night, we wandered into a cemetery and found ourselves sitting on a convenient marble slab. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWhat were we to make of this tornado of passion we suddenly felt for each other?\u00a0 Did it mean that God wanted us to forget all the agonies we\u2019d gone through over our singleness struggles and just fall into each other arms?\u201d\u00a0 I said that it didn\u2019t really make a whole lot of sense to me. We sat there in silence; and finally, he said: \u201cYou\u2019re right.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d\u00a0 There was another long silence.\u00a0 Then, suddenly, we realized that the moon had risen behind us and was casting the shadow of a stone cross between us on that slab.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that shadow of a cross foretold her future, but not like she first imagined.\u00a0 You see Elisabeth eventually did marry Jim Elliot.\u00a0 It started out like a beautiful storybook; but within a couple of years, Jim laid dead on a riverbank in remote Ecuador.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was pierced with spears from the Auca people that he had gone to serve.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith her missionary husband dead and a new baby on her hip, Elisabeth had a choice to make: \u201cWould she go home, or would she stay and serve?\u201d\u00a0 What would you do?!\u00a0 Elisabeth\u2014she took the gospel to them\u2014hardships, and suffering, and all \/ no matter the cost!\u00a0 What about you?\u00a0 Do you love God enough to surrender everything to Him?\u2014\u00a0 your plans \/ your dreams?\u00a0 Do you love Him with more passion than your latest tweet, or is Jesus just a list of rules and right answers in youth group?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor this good little girl from Iowa, it has been a <em>long<\/em> spiritual journey\u2014from a rule-keeping little girl to a prideful missionary in Alaska\u2014to where I sit today, talking with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlong the way, I learned how to own my faith in little steps\u2014from my college roommate Diana, from my radio mentor Elisabeth Elliot, and from some other significant people in my life whose identity\u2014well, might surprise you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few years ago, I flew into the very same jungle landing strip that the Elliots used to first reach the Auca in 1955.\u00a0 There, I met the Auca.\u00a0 We call them by the proper name now\u2014the Huaorani.\u00a0 These people were\u2014they were amazing\u2014and they showed me again what it really meant to truly love Jesus, just like Elisabeth and just like Diana.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, and Diana\u2014Diana married her college sweetheart.\u00a0 She and Donald have three beautiful girls.\u00a0 Somehow, she never made it to the so-called mission field; but it turns out that they were her mission field right up until the day that she went home to be with Jesus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was just 31. The brain cancer that killed Diana\u2019s body\u2014it never robbed her soul of her passion for Him.\u00a0 Her face radiated Jesus until the day she died, and she left this earth still <em>totally<\/em> in love with Him.\u00a0 Diana left behind three daughters, and they\u2019re about your age right now.\u00a0 And you guessed it\u2014they deeply love Jesus, just like their mom.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a journey.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been listening to Michelle Hill from <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> share what was really transitional in your life \/ a transition from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014well, you described it as a good church girl to somebody who was sold out for Jesus.\u00a0 Those were the two points on the compass for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and I would have thought that, at 22 years old, I had it all figured out; and I really thought that, since I was a missionary, my life was in Him\u2014I thought: \u201cI\u2019ve got this.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Christian.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s your identity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s my identity.\u00a0 I\u2019m a missionary.\u00a0 I am <em>doing<\/em> great things for God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But what was missing?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was His heart \/ it was humility to understand that I needed to be sold out.\u00a0 What was missing was a love for Christ and knowing God\u2014knowing who He was\u2014and walking in that and having my identity firmly rooted in Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>, the travel journal that is created for the young woman, who is going through this with her mom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014you quote Elisabeth Elliot with a great quote about surrendering your heart to Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOne does not surrender a life in an instant.\u00a0 That, which is life-long, can only be surrendered in a lifetime.\u201d That\u2019s what I was missing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think, for parents\u2014again, who are entrusted as the guardian of their children\u2019s souls for, at least, the first 18 years of life as they shape these arrows before they let them go and fly into adulthood\u2014this handoff that we\u2019re talking about here, as much as is possible\u2014needs to be nurtured, and cared for, and guided, and directed by a mom and a dad with their son \/ their daughter and direct them in the right way and have these conversations and not be afraid to discuss doubt,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014fear, questions that cannot be answered on this side of heaven, and be honest about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we really try to drive that home in addressing: \u201cWhat are you going to look to for your direction in life?\u00a0 It\u2019s not just the habits you picked up at church or what your parents believe.\u00a0 That gives you a foundation; but ultimately, it\u2019s got to be God\u2019s Word, and you\u2019ve got to know it and believe it.\u00a0 That is, ultimately, going to be your authority in life.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you know Christ.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you believe in Him and love Him.\u201d We keep pushing back to the authority of Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I can hear in my head as you\u2019re talking about that [singing]: \u201cThe Word of God is living and active and sharper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go, Bob!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cthan any two-edged sword.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the verse that is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Close; yes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that\u2019s the verse.\u00a0 [Laughter] That may not be the melody, but that\u2019s the verse that is put to music as a memory verse as a part of Session 3 in <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>.\u00a0 There are memory verses all the way through this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what you want a young person to do is recognize: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis is where I go \/ this is the anchor point for my soul.\u00a0 And if I\u2019m going to have my identity rooted in Christ, I\u2019m going to have to know the Christ who is revealed in Scripture. I\u2019m going to have to, not just believe the Bible, but obey the Bible and walk according to the Scriptures.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; \u201cWhat are you going to follow?\u00a0 Everybody follows something \/ everybody obeys something\u2014it could be yourself, it could be a movie star that you admire, it could be just what you heard from a pastor or your friends\u2014but the only thing that\u2019s going to give you a solid foundation for your life is God\u2019s Word.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anchor your kids\u2014your young men and your young ladies\u2014in the Book.\u00a0 Train them to think from the Scripture, not to the Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And again, the whole focus here is to get a young person to transition from, what I would say is, imitative Christianity to independent Christianity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s living a life of surrender and picking up your cross and following Christ for a lifetime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s nobody better than a mom or a dad to be in that conversation with their 15-year-old.\u00a0 We\u2019re hoping that this spring and summer there would be thousands of young people and their parents heading off for a two-day adventure somewhere\u2014maybe, you\u2019re going hiking somewhere; maybe, you\u2019re going to a sporting event; maybe, you\u2019re going on a shopping trip\u2014I don\u2019t know what it is that your son or daughter would get excited about, but plan a two-day getaway where you\u2019re going to drive to do something special.
