Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m just impressed that some of those young ladies knew who Audrey Hepburn was\u2014seriously. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A lot of them did; didn\u2019t they?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, they did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Pretty interesting\u2014those were young women who were asked the question, \u201cWhen you\u2019re trying to get a picture of authentic womanhood and real femininity, who comes to mind?\u201d\u00a0 We were doing this for a resource that has just been created, here at FamilyLife, called <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Bob, I\u2019ve just been thinking about this generation of young people\u2014who are growing up in the teenage years \/ those who are between the ages of 14 and 16. We\u2019ve got all kinds of new words that they are experiencing. We\u2019ve got pocket-dialing, where you call a friend because you put your cell phone in your pocket and you accidentally dial them. But we also have something that is impacting teenagers called identity theft. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a major identity crisis with young people today. It\u2019s part of why <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> exists and why we created this resource. We want to help parents embed in their sons and their daughters what real masculinity and femininity looks like in their sons and daughters so, when they grow up, they\u2019re going to know what a real woman is and what a real woman does\u2014and the same for a young man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Many of our listeners are familiar with the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> resource that was developed years ago to help parents with preteens address issues of peer pressure, and dating, and the birds and the bees\u2014all of those kinds of issues. What we\u2019ve heard from parents over the years is: \u201cWe wish we had more like that that we could do with our kids\u2014where we could begin to probe some of these life issues that young people are going through.\u201d That\u2019s why, for a couple of years now, we\u2019ve been working on the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> resource for 14-\/15-year-old young people and their parents to get away for a couple of days and to address issues that junior high kids or middle school kids are grappling with: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cWhat am I good at?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat am I here for?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s my purpose in life?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHow do I become popular?\u201d \u201cHow do I get people to like me?\u201d\u00a0 Those are the things that young people are dealing with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>And one of the issues they are dealing with, Dennis, is: \u201cSo, I\u2019m a boy \/ I\u2019m a girl. What does that mean for my identity that I\u2019m masculine or feminine?\u00a0 What does it mean for my sexuality?\u00a0 What does it mean for my relationships with other people?\u201d\u2014a lot of confusion in that area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We want to help you, as a parent, equip your child to know: \u201cWhat is a woman?\u00a0 What is a man?\u201d\u00a0 And here on the broadcast with us are Michelle Hill and John Majors, who have developed both of these resources for parents. John, Michelle, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>John: <\/strong>Thanks, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Michelle has worked at FamilyLife since 2005. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe has been mentoring young ladies for the past 15 years. John has worked here since 2000. He and his wife Julie were married in 1999. They have three children, and he and Julie are on the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway speaker team. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s back up and talk about\u2014Michelle, what is the essence of what the Bible teaches about true womanhood?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, it is <em>not<\/em> what the world teaches\u2014I can tell you that. As we really dug into the Bible and looked through it, we came up with four main characteristics. A biblical woman is going to have holy beauty, she\u2019s going to have the heart of a helper, she is going to be a life-giver, and she\u2019s going to have a heavenly focus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What you\u2019re saying is\u2014that as you\u2019re grappling with: \u201cWhat are the issues that determine living as a woman according to God\u2019s design, as opposed to what men need to focus on?\u201d\u2014young women need to focus on holy beauty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re talking about the beauty of their character, not the beauty of their\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014their external beauty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, because that\u2019s what we think. We think it is external beauty. We\u2019re taught from the world that it is external beauty that makes us a woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said the heart of a helper\u2014and it\u2019s not that men aren\u2019t ever called to help\u2014but there is a unique calling on women to be a helper, especially in the marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And then, you talk about a woman as a life-giver. Certainly, that\u2019s true biologically if she becomes a wife and a mom; but a woman is a life-giver beyond just what she\u2019s able to do biologically; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, God created women uniquely in the fact that we like to nurture\u2014we like to care for, and we like to see little people move to the next step \/ or even big people. Being in my mentoring relationships with young women, I like to see them move in their relationship with God in those \u201cAha!\u201d moments. And I think\u2014not that guys don\u2019t have some nurturing abilities\u2014I know you all have these abilities\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but I think women have, maybe, 1percent more or 2 percent more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is something about this nurturing quality in women that we just want to acknowledge and say: \u201cIt\u2019s there, and it\u2019s good. It\u2019s a part of how God\u2019s made you and you should respond to that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think when we start to discuss these kinds of topics, like nurturing and being a helper, there is a sense in which some people think that we\u2019re demeaning women\u2014not at all. This is a part of God\u2019s design that He imprinted in a woman\u2019s life, and it needs to be respected\u2014just as a man\u2019s does as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we\u2019re trying to present it to young women in such a way that it\u2019s attractive, and it\u2019s empowering, and it\u2019s exciting, and they go: \u201cYes!\u00a0 I can respond to what\u2019s in my heart, and that\u2019s a good thing in how I respond to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe final characteristic is a woman who has a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>\u2014a heavenly focus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014a heavenly focus. She has\u2014well, in the words of the theme verse for <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>: \u201cShe has set her mind on things that are above not on things that are on earth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe recognizes that \u201cYou\u2019re living life\u201d for a bigger reason than just \u201cto get to the end.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn, you had to kind of come up with the same metric for what makes a young man different than a young woman. Tell us what you came up with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>Well, I had it easy\u2014I mean, men are simple to begin with; right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But Dennis\u2014he paved the way for us with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> series. We just took from that. There is a simple definition with the word, step\u2014using that acronym\u2014\u201cS\u201d \/ Standing firm\u2014men will stand firm in hard times; \u201cT\u201d \/ Take the initiative; \u201cE\u201d \/ Engage with wisdom and grace\u2014so, you\u2019ll engage into a situation, but you do it in a way that honors others \/ it doesn\u2019t just tear them down\u2014not a bully. And then, \u201cP\u201d \/ Plan ahead and provide. The whole Stu Weber idea of provision\u2014look out ahead, not just providing financially, but \u201cHow do you look out ahead for what the needs of others will be?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What you are trying to impart to a young 15-year-old boy with that definition is: \u201cYou need to step into manhood and assume responsibility. Don\u2019t be passive about your life\u2014learn how to engage others, how to lead, and how to take responsibility for\u2014not just for yourself\u2014but for the people around you in providing and protecting.\u201d\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s not that women don\u2019t do those things; but if we are putting it on the balance scale, men are called to those responsibilities in higher measure than women are called to those in Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>Yes; and that\u2019s really what we wanted to paint: \u201cWhat\u2019s a biblical perspective of manhood?\u201d because there\u2019s just a ton of confusion today about what it means to be a man. In fact, we went and asked some guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>[Laughter] I love this! You did ask guys. They are not good messages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And honestly, what you\u2019ve done\u2014here in <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> and putting together a resource for parents to have a weekend away with their kids to listen to these CDs and the stories and interact with them around what\u2019s happening\u2014is to contrast what the Bible says with what the world is saying and to have them realize that what the Bible\u2019s talking about makes sense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If this really is imprinted on the heart of a young man or a young woman: \u201cIf God has made you, as a young woman, He\u2019s made you to be a nurturer; He\u2019s made you to come alongside and assist and help; He\u2019s made you to reflect holy beauty in what you do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf that\u2019s really imprinted on the heart of a young man or a young woman, then, as a mom or a dad is going through a session in <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> with a son or a daughter, that\u2019ll resonate in the heart of that child. I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>\u2014self-harm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that\u2019s coming out of a culture that is talking about the physical expression of a person\u2019s worth and value. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Michelle, that\u2019s one of the things you pointed to in the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> series\u2014is that a lot of young women are trying to figure out: \u201cWho am I?\u00a0 What does it mean to be a woman?\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s leading them to all kinds of destructive choices \/ all kinds of ways to try to resolve that, including things like starving themselves to death. Her identity is all of a sudden wrapped up in appearance and in a very destructive way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to the moms who are listening to this\u2014who are terrified for their young daughters who are growing up\u2014stories like this ought to be a wake-up call to say, \u201cYou have to be there in your child\u2019s life, offering unconditional love, talking about these issues, unpacking what\u2019s happening in the culture, what\u2019s occurring around peer pressure and the false voices that are speaking into your daughter\u2019s life\u2014or maybe, it\u2019s your son\u2019s life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and counteract it with a strong relationship with your child.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tImagine\u2014just imagine getting away for a weekend with your daughter and allowing us to guide you through the CDs and the <em>Passport<\/em> workbook for the young lady or the young man and go through a weekend experience that will clarify this issue of identity around several issues\u2014spiritual identity, gender identity, emotional\/relationship identity. I don\u2019t know how.\u201d\u00a0 This will guide you through a process that will open up some discussions\u2014I promise you\u2014that you\u2019ve never had with your son or your daughter. And you need to have them. They need these discussions with you. I wish, at this point, I could reach through the radio and put my arm around a parent and say: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to do this! This is life and death for a group of young people today who are growing up in the most perilous days, I think, that have ever existed for teenagers.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you know that your 15-year-old son or daughter\u2014when you say: \u201cHey, let\u2019s do a two-day getaway. And they are just coming at these kids. I want to go back and say: \u201cI understand how a parent feels ill-equipped. They don\u2019t feel like they know the Bible well enough. They don\u2019t feel like they\u2019ve been trained. I get all that. We had six teenagers\u2014we\u2019ve been there.\u201d\u00a0 This resource will help you relate to your child \/ talk with your child and open issues up to have a conversation. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>A lot of them did; didn\u2019t they?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes, they did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Pretty interesting\u2014those were young women who were asked the question, \u201cWhen you\u2019re trying to get a picture of authentic womanhood and real femininity, who comes to mind?\u201d\u00a0 We were doing this for a resource that has just been created, here at FamilyLife, called <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Bob, I\u2019ve just been thinking about this generation of young people\u2014who are growing up in the teenage years \/ those who are between the ages of 14 and 16. We\u2019ve got all kinds of new words that they are experiencing. We\u2019ve got pocket-dialing, where you call a friend because you put your cell phone in your pocket and you accidentally dial them. But we also have something that is impacting teenagers called identity theft. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a major identity crisis with young people today. It\u2019s part of why <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> exists and why we created this resource. We want to help parents embed in their sons and their daughters what real masculinity and femininity looks like in their sons and daughters so, when they grow up, they\u2019re going to know what a real woman is and what a real woman does\u2014and the same for a young man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Many of our listeners are familiar with the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> resource that was developed years ago to help parents with preteens address issues of peer pressure, and dating, and the birds and the bees\u2014all of those kinds of issues. What we\u2019ve heard from parents over the years is: \u201cWe wish we had more like that that we could do with our kids\u2014where we could begin to probe some of these life issues that young people are going through.\u201d That\u2019s why, for a couple of years now, we\u2019ve been working on the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> resource for 14-\/15-year-old young people and their parents to get away for a couple of days and to address issues that junior high kids or middle school kids are grappling with: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0\u201cWhat am I good at?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat am I here for?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s my purpose in life?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHow do I become popular?\u201d \u201cHow do I get people to like me?\u201d\u00a0 Those are the things that young people are dealing with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>And one of the issues they are dealing with, Dennis, is: \u201cSo, I\u2019m a boy \/ I\u2019m a girl. What does that mean for my identity that I\u2019m masculine or feminine?\u00a0 What does it mean for my sexuality?\u00a0 What does it mean for my relationships with other people?\u201d\u2014a lot of confusion in that area. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We want to help you, as a parent, equip your child to know: \u201cWhat is a woman?\u00a0 What is a man?\u201d\u00a0 And here on the broadcast with us are Michelle Hill and John Majors, who have developed both of these resources for parents. John, Michelle, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Thank you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>John: <\/strong>Thanks, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Michelle has worked at FamilyLife since 2005. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe has been mentoring young ladies for the past 15 years. John has worked here since 2000. He and his wife Julie were married in 1999. They have three children, and he and Julie are on the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway speaker team. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s back up and talk about\u2014Michelle, what is the essence of what the Bible teaches about true womanhood?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, it is <em>not<\/em> what the world teaches\u2014I can tell you that. As we really dug into the Bible and looked through it, we came up with four main characteristics. A biblical woman is going to have holy beauty, she\u2019s going to have the heart of a helper, she is going to be a life-giver, and she\u2019s going to have a heavenly focus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What you\u2019re saying is\u2014that as you\u2019re grappling with: \u201cWhat are the issues that determine living as a woman according to God\u2019s design, as opposed to what men need to focus on?\u201d\u2014young women need to focus on holy beauty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re talking about the beauty of their character, not the beauty of their\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014their external beauty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, because that\u2019s what we think. We think it is external beauty. We\u2019re taught from the world that it is external beauty that makes us a woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You said the heart of a helper\u2014and it\u2019s not that men aren\u2019t ever called to help\u2014but there is a unique calling on women to be a helper, especially in the marriage relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>And then, you talk about a woman as a life-giver. Certainly, that\u2019s true biologically if she becomes a wife and a mom; but a woman is a life-giver beyond just what she\u2019s able to do biologically; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>Well, God created women uniquely in the fact that we like to nurture\u2014we like to care for, and we like to see little people move to the next step \/ or even big people. Being in my mentoring relationships with young women, I like to see them move in their relationship with God in those \u201cAha!\u201d moments. And I think\u2014not that guys don\u2019t have some nurturing abilities\u2014I know you all have these abilities\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but I think women have, maybe, 1percent more or 2 percent more. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There is something about this nurturing quality in women that we just want to acknowledge and say: \u201cIt\u2019s there, and it\u2019s good. It\u2019s a part of how God\u2019s made you and you should respond to that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think when we start to discuss these kinds of topics, like nurturing and being a helper, there is a sense in which some people think that we\u2019re demeaning women\u2014not at all. This is a part of God\u2019s design that He imprinted in a woman\u2019s life, and it needs to be respected\u2014just as a man\u2019s does as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And we\u2019re trying to present it to young women in such a way that it\u2019s attractive, and it\u2019s empowering, and it\u2019s exciting, and they go: \u201cYes!\u00a0 I can respond to what\u2019s in my heart, and that\u2019s a good thing in how I respond to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe final characteristic is a woman who has a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>\u2014a heavenly focus. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014a heavenly focus. She has\u2014well, in the words of the theme verse for <em>Passport2Identity<\/em>: \u201cShe has set her mind on things that are above not on things that are on earth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe recognizes that \u201cYou\u2019re living life\u201d for a bigger reason than just \u201cto get to the end.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn, you had to kind of come up with the same metric for what makes a young man different than a young woman. Tell us what you came up with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>Well, I had it easy\u2014I mean, men are simple to begin with; right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But Dennis\u2014he paved the way for us with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> series. We just took from that. There is a simple definition with the word, step\u2014using that acronym\u2014\u201cS\u201d \/ Standing firm\u2014men will stand firm in hard times; \u201cT\u201d \/ Take the initiative; \u201cE\u201d \/ Engage with wisdom and grace\u2014so, you\u2019ll engage into a situation, but you do it in a way that honors others \/ it doesn\u2019t just tear them down\u2014not a bully. And then, \u201cP\u201d \/ Plan ahead and provide. The whole Stu Weber idea of provision\u2014look out ahead, not just providing financially, but \u201cHow do you look out ahead for what the needs of others will be?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>What you are trying to impart to a young 15-year-old boy with that definition is: \u201cYou need to step into manhood and assume responsibility. Don\u2019t be passive about your life\u2014learn how to engage others, how to lead, and how to take responsibility for\u2014not just for yourself\u2014but for the people around you in providing and protecting.\u201d\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s not that women don\u2019t do those things; but if we are putting it on the balance scale, men are called to those responsibilities in higher measure than women are called to those in Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John: <\/strong>Yes; and that\u2019s really what we wanted to paint: \u201cWhat\u2019s a biblical perspective of manhood?\u201d because there\u2019s just a ton of confusion today about what it means to be a man. In fact, we went and asked some guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>[Laughter] I love this! You did ask guys. They are not good messages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And honestly, what you\u2019ve done\u2014here in <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> and putting together a resource for parents to have a weekend away with their kids to listen to these CDs and the stories and interact with them around what\u2019s happening\u2014is to contrast what the Bible says with what the world is saying and to have them realize that what the Bible\u2019s talking about makes sense. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>If this really is imprinted on the heart of a young man or a young woman: \u201cIf God has made you, as a young woman, He\u2019s made you to be a nurturer; He\u2019s made you to come alongside and assist and help; He\u2019s made you to reflect holy beauty in what you do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf that\u2019s really imprinted on the heart of a young man or a young woman, then, as a mom or a dad is going through a session in <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> with a son or a daughter, that\u2019ll resonate in the heart of that child. I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michelle: <\/strong>\u2014self-harm. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that\u2019s coming out of a culture that is talking about the physical expression of a person\u2019s worth and value. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Michelle, that\u2019s one of the things you pointed to in the <em>Passport2Identity<\/em> series\u2014is that a lot of young women are trying to figure out: \u201cWho am I?\u00a0 What does it mean to be a woman?\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s leading them to all kinds of destructive choices \/ all kinds of ways to try to resolve that, including things like starving themselves to death. Her identity is all of a sudden wrapped up in appearance and in a very destructive way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And to the moms who are listening to this\u2014who are terrified for their young daughters who are growing up\u2014stories like this ought to be a wake-up call to say, \u201cYou have to be there in your child\u2019s life, offering unconditional love, talking about these issues, unpacking what\u2019s happening in the culture, what\u2019s occurring around peer pressure and the false voices that are speaking into your daughter\u2019s life\u2014or maybe, it\u2019s your son\u2019s life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and counteract it with a strong relationship with your child.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tImagine\u2014just imagine getting away for a weekend with your daughter and allowing us to guide you through the CDs and the <em>Passport<\/em> workbook for the young lady or the young man and go through a weekend experience that will clarify this issue of identity around several issues\u2014spiritual identity, gender identity, emotional\/relationship identity. I don\u2019t know how.\u201d\u00a0 This will guide you through a process that will open up some discussions\u2014I promise you\u2014that you\u2019ve never had with your son or your daughter. And you need to have them. They need these discussions with you. I wish, at this point, I could reach through the radio and put my arm around a parent and say: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to do this! This is life and death for a group of young people today who are growing up in the most perilous days, I think, that have ever existed for teenagers.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you know that your 15-year-old son or daughter\u2014when you say: \u201cHey, let\u2019s do a two-day getaway. They don\u2019t feel like they\u2019ve been trained. I get all that. We had six teenagers\u2014we\u2019ve been there.\u201d\u00a0 This resource will help you relate to your child \/ talk with your child and open issues up to have a conversation.
