Well, here\u2019s some counsel for you from Tim Savage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> We men\u2014we think we change our wives by pointing out their defects and shortcomings, and their lack of discipline, or whatever it might be. Well, you do that over the course of a lifetime\u2014you produce a hen-pecking wife. Why?\u2014because she has no other defense\u2014the hen has come home to roost, and you\u2019re the cause of it! Paul is saying: \u201cMen, you don\u2019t get it! Love your wife as Christ loves the church and look what she will become!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, April 5<sup>th<\/sup>. I\u2019ve heard you say for years that one of the reasons God gives us kids is to finish the process of us growing up\u2014not just growing them up\u2014but us growing up, as parents. Don\u2019t you think that one of the reasons God gives us each other is the same thing?\u2014that\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Are you talking about marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Absolutely! I think that begins the process of growing up and sets the table for us to move to the graduate school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I am a different man today than I was when I married Mary Ann. But I\u2019m also a different man than I would be if Mary Ann hadn\u2019t been an influence in my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; I saw a bumper sticker one time that said, \u201cMy children save me from toxic self-absorption.\u201d I think that could read, \u201cMy marriage saved me from toxic self-absorption.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we have with us a guest, back on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Tim Savage. Welcome back, Tim.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It\u2019s good to be with you Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Tim is the pastor of Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Those of you looking for paradise, you can go to Arizona to find it. He\u2019s been there for 27 years\u2014married to Lesli for the past 35 years \/ they have two grown sons. He\u2019s a graduate of <em>the<\/em> Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He loves to throw <em>the<\/em> in front of that, you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And also a graduate of Cambridge\u2014got your Ph.D. from Cambridge, over in England.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes. Bob, I want to say\u2014he\u2019s quite right to throw <em>the<\/em>\u2014we need a definite article in front of Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We <em>do<\/em> need a definite article. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is the author of <em>No Ordinary Marriage<\/em>. I want to talk with you about something you point out in your book\u2014you say that there are three things that undermine marriage\u2014gender discord, easy dissolution, and annoying differences. I want to focus on the first one\u2014gender discord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I mean by that that men and women are different. Those differences are often difficult for each gender to understand and they promote discord.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re doing gender stereotyping, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I thought that\u2019s what you were paying me to do. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if you checked; but we\u2019re really not paying you, Tim\u2014[Laughter] \u2014your church is, but we\u2019re not!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just to say that men and woman are different in our culture today sets you up for all kinds of people saying, \u201cOh man, there he goes with that stereotyping.\u201d What do you say about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Well, I think that most people appreciate that there are differences and are encouraged to see that there are differences. I don\u2019t run into much flack because of that. Let\u2019s just take my own marriage. I tend to be uni-focused\u2014I\u2019m very intent on getting one thing done at a time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife is multi-focused. Because I\u2019m uni-focused and I\u2019m intense, when she comes and wants to talk to me or makes suggestions about what to do in the evening, I can hardly, sometimes, be interrupted because I\u2019m so focused on what I\u2019m doing. She appreciates that I am uni-focused because I do well at one thing \/ I appreciate that she\u2019s multi-focused\u2014but boy!\u2014can those two cause sparks to fly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are days you don\u2019t appreciate the other one\u2019s gifting or temperament in that regard because it interferes with what we\u2019ve got going on. But when we pull back and see that our differences can blend into a greater masterpiece than we\u2019d ever see if it was one of us alone, that\u2019s huge; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I find that often opposites come together for a reason. If you put two Tim\u2019s in our house, it would be a disaster.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Lesli is too precious for me to say that about her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yes\u2014I mean, we are very different. That\u2019s the <em>genius<\/em> in what God has done in bringing us together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some of those differences are personality differences but you\u2019re making the case that some of those differences are hardwired into the gender that God assigned to us when He creates us. Not only do we have differences related to gender, but we have responsibilities that are tied to gender in marriage; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes. This is really interesting\u2014of all the things the Apostle Paul might want to marshal, in terms of instructing marriages \/ marital partners, he isolates on one thing. In fact, not only does he have only one thing for the wife and the husband, he has one word for each\u2014the word for the wife is \u201csubmission\u201d \/ the word for the husband is \u201clove.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You just caused over 50 percent of our audience to bristle because submission is not a politically-correct word in our culture and has so many varied meanings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of people don\u2019t really give it a chance because they have ascribed so much abuse around the term that they don\u2019t find it easy to hear what the Bible teaches about submission\u2014because it\u2019s not talking about blind submission \/ it\u2019s not talking about not-saying-anything submission. It\u2019s talking about submission within the context of a relationship, where a husband is commanded to love--L-O-V-E--his wife and to do it in a self-sacrificing way as Christ loved the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s talk first about the husband\u2019s responsibility because, when guys get it right\u2014Tim, you know this\u2014it makes it a whole lot easier for a wife to fulfill her assignment and her responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It sure does. When I think about the two words, you\u2019re right\u2014submission does cause us to bristle because we\u2019ve undergone two hundred years of women asserting their equal rights. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMuch of what they\u2019ve done has been good but the last thing they want to hear is that they should be subordinate to anyone. I think we need to give the Apostle Paul an opportunity here to say exactly what he means by both words. We might be surprised, at the end of our study, that what he has to say about both is very, very exciting. I would imagine that 50 percent of our listeners would not be bristling after they hear what Paul means by submission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut your question about the husband and love\u2014husband\u2019s don\u2019t bristle when it comes to loving their wives because what comes into their mind are all sorts of things that they think they want to do. However\/truly to understand what Paul means by love\u2014when he says, \u201cHusbands love your wives,\u201d\u2014it is a much harder, a much more <em>demanding<\/em>, and a much more intimidating word than the word he\u2019s given to women. So, if anybody should be bristling, it should be the husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s a sacrificial nature to this love that Paul is calling us to that\u2019s sacrificing all the way to death. I know a lot of men who\u2019d say, \u201cYeah, I\u2019d take a bullet for my wife\u201d; but they don\u2019t want to get up out of the La-Z-Boy<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for their wives, day in and day out. It\u2019s that daily death that\u2019s the hard thing to do; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes it is: \u201cHusbands love your wives just as Christ loved the church <em>when<\/em> [emphasis added] He gave Himself up for her.\u201d We know when He gave Himself up for her\u2014He gave Himself up on a cross. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do we take the measure of the love that a husband is meant to bring into his marriage? I think we need to go to the starting point of that love and the end point of that love\u2014and the gap between them is the measure. Christ left heaven to love us\u2014a place so exalted and beautiful it escapes our capacity to understand. He went all the way to a cross\u2014all the way at the other end \/ a place so ugly and horrific we can\u2019t understand it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChrist gave <em>everything<\/em> He had for us. It is one thing to see what our wife\u2019s need is \/ it\u2019s another to do something about it. It\u2019s quite another to venture <em>everything<\/em> you have to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking with Tim Savage, who\u2019s written a book called <em>No Ordinary Marriage: Together for God\u2019s Glory,<\/em> and exploring the unique assignment that God has given to husbands to love their wives. That\u2019s the one word you said\u2014\u201clove\u201d\u2014for men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. In fact, open your Bible to Ephesians, Chapter 5, and start about\u2014well, about verse 25. You\u2019ll see that there\u2019s three times God says, through the Apostle Paul, \u201cHusbands love your wives,\u201d\u2014He wants us to get the point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But if you back up a few verses\u2014to verse 22\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you\u2019re going to get controversial now. We\u2019ve got to hit the politically-incorrect\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nobody\u2019s arguing with husbands loving their wives today; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. So Tim\u2014\u201cWives submit to your husbands\u2026\u201d\u2014you said that, \u201cIf a wife understands that, she\u2019s not going to bristle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I haven\u2019t found any who do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so help us understand it so that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I promise you\u2014you\u2019re talking to some now!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Well, we haven\u2019t explored exactly what Paul\u2019s saying here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We haven\u2019t \/ we haven\u2019t. Maybe it\u2019s in the explanation, and you can do a better job than Bob and I have done. [Laughter] This is three men, however, talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014submission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. Let\u2019s not forget that. Explain it to the other half of our audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Well, first of all, let\u2019s make the problem even harder. Paul uses the word <em>hupotasso<\/em> here for \u201csubmission.\u201d It\u2019s a compound word\u2014it has a preposition, which means \u201cunder\u201d \/ <em>hupa<\/em>. It\u2019s got a verbal form, <em>tasso<\/em>, which means \u201cto align.\u201d Put the two together\u2014\u201cto align under\u201d was used of the military, back in those days, to line up under the General.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you thought that this would help your case to explain that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I said it was getting harder first; yes. [Laughter] So the best English word would probably be \u201csub-ordinate\u201d: \u201cWives subordinate yourselves to your husbands\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That sounds even tougher than \u201csubmission\u201d to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It does; yes. I mean \u201csub\u201d \/ submarine\u2014under\u2014that\u2019s the meaning of the preposition there. What does this mean? Well, immediately, we\u2019re scandalized by the fact that\u2014after all the advances we\u2019ve made for women in women\u2019s rights\u2014that they should be asked now to subordinate themselves to anything, let alone their husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Paul\u2014let\u2019s give him a chance to speak to us here because, in both cases, the one word he gives to each partner has a clause after it that qualifies what he means by that. You know, \u201cHusbands love your wives\u2026\u201d\u2014well, that doesn\u2019t mean just to love them romantically. He tells us: \u201c\u2026just <em>as<\/em> [emphasis added] the Lord loved the church when He gave Himself up for it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the women\u2014subordination has a clause too: \u201cWomen subordinate yourselves to your husband the same way you do to the Lord.\u201d How do we subordinate ourselves to our Lord? Well, we want to serve Him, we want to honor Him, we want to dignify Him, and we want to exalt Him\u2014we could come up with many more adjectives. All of these adjectives are what we could call <em>proactive<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we look at submission as a passive state, where we kind of almost become a doormat and just do what our husbands says when we are in disagreement. No\u2014Paul is talking about something here that is very proactive. He\u2019s saying: \u201cWomen, I want you to take your one thing into your own hands. It\u2019s for you to apply this proactively all the time: serve your husband, dignify your husband, and exalt your husband.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s make it really practical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I think what Paul is saying here is: \u201cFind out what your husband\u2019s interests are \/ what his needs are and do whatever it takes to meet them.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is a part of how we\u2014we\u2019re back to what we talked about earlier\u2014how we glorify God, how we put on display what the glory of God is because the Son, Jesus, did this with the Father throughout His ministry \/ throughout His life. He said: \u201cAll I want to do is what pleases the Father. All I want to do is what will honor the Father. I don\u2019t live to do anything else.\u201d When a wife takes that responsibility, she\u2019s being like Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> You know, that is so profound, Bob\u2014it is so good! Because what you\u2019re saying is: \u201cIt\u2019s exaltation through subordination.\u201d Jesus subordinated Himself to the Father and, in some sense, He subordinated Himself to <em>us<\/em> in that He took our sins off our shoulders \/ He put himself almost at a lower level than us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat was the result of that? \u201cGod highly exalted Him, gave Him the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee would bow\u2026every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord\u2026 [Phil. 2:9, 10]. We need to stop thinking the way the world thinks because\u2014it\u2019s not only wrong\u2014it the opposite of right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen\u2014can I just say one more thing? When a woman seeks to dignify her husband, she does not lose! She is <em>exalted<\/em> by being used by God to create a man much better than the one she married. She, through her subordination then\u2014she is exalted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, it is the same thing for the man\u2014he loves his wife like Christ loves the church. Look what we have, here in Ephesians 5\u2014what happens? Well it says: \u201c\u2026that He might sanctify her,\u201d\u2014that means: \u201cSet her apart by his love,\u201d\u2014\u201cthat he might cleanse her by the washing of water\u2026 [Eph. 5:26]\u201d\u2014not sure what that means \/ commentators wrestle with that one\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it has to do, certainly, with taking the dirt, and the grime, and the dirty baggage that she once had, and because you love her unconditionally, starts to clean up \/ it starts to go away. Instead of being critical of our wives for her past, we love her and watch the sully-ness disappear from her. It goes on: \u201c\u2026so that He might present the church\u201d\u2014of course, He is referring to the church here as well\u2014\u201din splendor, without spot, wrinkle, or any such thing; that she might be holy without blemish.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHusbands\u2014we love our wives\u2014like giving ourselves up for them \/ making their lives more important than our own\u2014we don\u2019t hurt ourselves. We present back to ourselves a woman in radiance \/ in splendor. Love is the most powerful transforming agent this world\u2019s ever seen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Especially when it\u2019s Christ\u2019s love in us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you tell a story in your book that illustrates that. Men don\u2019t want to die to self\u2014they want to live for themselves. We\u2019ve been talking about wives submitting to their husbands; and certainly; from a political correctness; <em>that<\/em> goes totally against the grain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, there\u2019s almost a sense here in which what we\u2019re talking about is\u2014because both of those things go against the grain of men and of women\u2014it\u2019s almost like it has to be the Scriptures because God is calling us away from ourselves and from our own rights. I appreciate the way you\u2019ve explained this, Tim. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou tell a story in the book\u2014that Bob referred to earlier\u2014about a man who took on an assignment of loving his wife\u2014an unusual assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes. He\u2019s one of my best friends. He was getting married, and we got to know his wife a little bit. Immediately, concerns rose in our minds that she probably wasn\u2019t the right person for him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You saw some yellow flags in this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Saw some yellow \/ saw some red flags. She was somewhat abrasive, very opinionated, controlling. Some of the things she said demean the person she was talking to right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI scooted up the courage, as a godly friend ought to do, to go to him and just reason with him. It was hard for me to do this\u2014I don\u2019t like confrontation, but this was something that was needed to save this man from a very bad marriage. And I did\u2014I went and I said, \u201cListen, these are the things I\u2019ve been observing in this person you\u2019re about to marry.\u201d After I had finished, he looked at me; and smiling, he said, \u201cWell, Tim, all I can say to you is, \u2018I love her.\u2019\u201d At the time, I thought: \u201cOf all the sentimental drivel, haven\u2019t you wrestled with anything I\u2019ve just said?! Can\u2019t you respond to any of the things that I\u2019ve seen?\u201d All he could say was, \u201cI just love her.\u201d It was clearly\u2014he wanted that to be his answer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShortly, thereafter, Lesli and I went to England. We were in England seven years. One of the people to invite us over to their home was this couple\u2014they\u2019d been married seven years now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we sat down to the dinner table\u2014and we listened to the conversation \/ them with us\u2014it was immediately arresting because this woman was still a very strong personality but there was a tenderness, and a gentleness, and a sweetness, and a caring that we didn\u2019t ever see in her before. Lesli and I were actually sitting across from each other at the table, and we\u2019re hitting feet. I was touching her toe every time this woman would say something so out of character from what I remembered. We\u2019d been kicking each other all night, just in amazement, for this woman had changed so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI couldn\u2019t wait to get in the car and say to Lesli: \u201cWhat\u2019s going on? What happened here?\u201d When we did get in the car, and before I started the ignition, I turned to my wife and I said, \u201cHoney what happened to her?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer answer was: \u201cHe has loved her. He has loved her. He has taken up her life and made it his own.\u201d I thought to myself: \u201cOf course, that\u2019s what\u2019s happened. Why did I ask?\u201d This is what Paul says in Ephesians 5\u2014he says, \u201cWhen we love our wives as Christ loves the church, watch what happens to her. She\u2019ll become more beautiful than you ever imagined could be possible.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis is right\u2014we husbands \/ we men\u2014we think we change our wives by pointing out their defects and their shortcomings, and their lack of discipline, or whatever it might be. Well, you do that over the course of a lifetime\u2014you produce a hen-pecking wife. Why?\u2014because she has no other defense than to defend herself\u2014the hen has come home to roost; and you\u2019re the cause of it, men. Paul is saying: \u201cMen, you don\u2019t get it! Love your wife as Christ loves the church and look what she\u2019ll become\u2014radiant \/ beautiful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cHusbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Tim\u2014thanks for your book, your life, your ministry and for being real, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. I want to focus on the first one\u2014gender discord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I mean by that that men and women are different. Those differences are often difficult for each gender to understand and they promote discord.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019re doing gender stereotyping, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I thought that\u2019s what you were paying me to do. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if you checked; but we\u2019re really not paying you, Tim\u2014[Laughter] \u2014your church is, but we\u2019re not!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just to say that men and woman are different in our culture today sets you up for all kinds of people saying, \u201cOh man, there he goes with that stereotyping.\u201d What do you say about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Well, I think that most people appreciate that there are differences and are encouraged to see that there are differences. I don\u2019t run into much flack because of that. Let\u2019s just take my own marriage. I tend to be uni-focused\u2014I\u2019m very intent on getting one thing done at a time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife is multi-focused. Because I\u2019m uni-focused and I\u2019m intense, when she comes and wants to talk to me or makes suggestions about what to do in the evening, I can hardly, sometimes, be interrupted because I\u2019m so focused on what I\u2019m doing. She appreciates that I am uni-focused because I do well at one thing \/ I appreciate that she\u2019s multi-focused\u2014but boy!\u2014can those two cause sparks to fly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are days you don\u2019t appreciate the other one\u2019s gifting or temperament in that regard because it interferes with what we\u2019ve got going on. But when we pull back and see that our differences can blend into a greater masterpiece than we\u2019d ever see if it was one of us alone, that\u2019s huge; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I find that often opposites come together for a reason. If you put two Tim\u2019s in our house, it would be a disaster.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Lesli is too precious for me to say that about her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yes\u2014I mean, we are very different. That\u2019s the <em>genius<\/em> in what God has done in bringing us together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some of those differences are personality differences but you\u2019re making the case that some of those differences are hardwired into the gender that God assigned to us when He creates us. Not only do we have differences related to gender, but we have responsibilities that are tied to gender in marriage; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes. This is really interesting\u2014of all the things the Apostle Paul might want to marshal, in terms of instructing marriages \/ marital partners, he isolates on one thing. In fact, not only does he have only one thing for the wife and the husband, he has one word for each\u2014the word for the wife is \u201csubmission\u201d \/ the word for the husband is \u201clove.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You just caused over 50 percent of our audience to bristle because submission is not a politically-correct word in our culture and has so many varied meanings. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of people don\u2019t really give it a chance because they have ascribed so much abuse around the term that they don\u2019t find it easy to hear what the Bible teaches about submission\u2014because it\u2019s not talking about blind submission \/ it\u2019s not talking about not-saying-anything submission. It\u2019s talking about submission within the context of a relationship, where a husband is commanded to love--L-O-V-E--his wife and to do it in a self-sacrificing way as Christ loved the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s talk first about the husband\u2019s responsibility because, when guys get it right\u2014Tim, you know this\u2014it makes it a whole lot easier for a wife to fulfill her assignment and her responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It sure does. When I think about the two words, you\u2019re right\u2014submission does cause us to bristle because we\u2019ve undergone two hundred years of women asserting their equal rights. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMuch of what they\u2019ve done has been good but the last thing they want to hear is that they should be subordinate to anyone. I think we need to give the Apostle Paul an opportunity here to say exactly what he means by both words. We might be surprised, at the end of our study, that what he has to say about both is very, very exciting. I would imagine that 50 percent of our listeners would not be bristling after they hear what Paul means by submission. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut your question about the husband and love\u2014husband\u2019s don\u2019t bristle when it comes to loving their wives because what comes into their mind are all sorts of things that they think they want to do. However\/truly to understand what Paul means by love\u2014when he says, \u201cHusbands love your wives,\u201d\u2014it is a much harder, a much more <em>demanding<\/em>, and a much more intimidating word than the word he\u2019s given to women. So, if anybody should be bristling, it should be the husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s a sacrificial nature to this love that Paul is calling us to that\u2019s sacrificing all the way to death. I know a lot of men who\u2019d say, \u201cYeah, I\u2019d take a bullet for my wife\u201d; but they don\u2019t want to get up out of the La-Z-Boy<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for their wives, day in and day out. It\u2019s that daily death that\u2019s the hard thing to do; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes it is: \u201cHusbands love your wives just as Christ loved the church <em>when<\/em> [emphasis added] He gave Himself up for her.\u201d We know when He gave Himself up for her\u2014He gave Himself up on a cross. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do we take the measure of the love that a husband is meant to bring into his marriage? I think we need to go to the starting point of that love and the end point of that love\u2014and the gap between them is the measure. Christ left heaven to love us\u2014a place so exalted and beautiful it escapes our capacity to understand. He went all the way to a cross\u2014all the way at the other end \/ a place so ugly and horrific we can\u2019t understand it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChrist gave <em>everything<\/em> He had for us. It is one thing to see what our wife\u2019s need is \/ it\u2019s another to do something about it. It\u2019s quite another to venture <em>everything<\/em> you have to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking with Tim Savage, who\u2019s written a book called <em>No Ordinary Marriage: Together for God\u2019s Glory,<\/em> and exploring the unique assignment that God has given to husbands to love their wives. That\u2019s the one word you said\u2014\u201clove\u201d\u2014for men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. In fact, open your Bible to Ephesians, Chapter 5, and start about\u2014well, about verse 25. You\u2019ll see that there\u2019s three times God says, through the Apostle Paul, \u201cHusbands love your wives,\u201d\u2014He wants us to get the point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But if you back up a few verses\u2014to verse 22\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; you\u2019re going to get controversial now. We\u2019ve got to hit the politically-incorrect\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Nobody\u2019s arguing with husbands loving their wives today; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. So Tim\u2014\u201cWives submit to your husbands\u2026\u201d\u2014you said that, \u201cIf a wife understands that, she\u2019s not going to bristle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I haven\u2019t found any who do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; so help us understand it so that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I promise you\u2014you\u2019re talking to some now!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Well, we haven\u2019t explored exactly what Paul\u2019s saying here. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We haven\u2019t \/ we haven\u2019t. Maybe it\u2019s in the explanation, and you can do a better job than Bob and I have done. [Laughter] This is three men, however, talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014submission.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. Let\u2019s not forget that. Explain it to the other half of our audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Well, first of all, let\u2019s make the problem even harder. Paul uses the word <em>hupotasso<\/em> here for \u201csubmission.\u201d It\u2019s a compound word\u2014it has a preposition, which means \u201cunder\u201d \/ <em>hupa<\/em>. It\u2019s got a verbal form, <em>tasso<\/em>, which means \u201cto align.\u201d Put the two together\u2014\u201cto align under\u201d was used of the military, back in those days, to line up under the General.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you thought that this would help your case to explain that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> I said it was getting harder first; yes. [Laughter] So the best English word would probably be \u201csub-ordinate\u201d: \u201cWives subordinate yourselves to your husbands\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That sounds even tougher than \u201csubmission\u201d to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> It does; yes. I mean \u201csub\u201d \/ submarine\u2014under\u2014that\u2019s the meaning of the preposition there. What does this mean? Well, immediately, we\u2019re scandalized by the fact that\u2014after all the advances we\u2019ve made for women in women\u2019s rights\u2014that they should be asked now to subordinate themselves to anything, let alone their husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Paul\u2014let\u2019s give him a chance to speak to us here because, in both cases, the one word he gives to each partner has a clause after it that qualifies what he means by that. You know, \u201cHusbands love your wives\u2026\u201d\u2014well, that doesn\u2019t mean just to love them romantically. He tells us: \u201c\u2026just <em>as<\/em> [emphasis added] the Lord loved the church when He gave Himself up for it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor the women\u2014subordination has a clause too: \u201cWomen subordinate yourselves to your husband the same way you do to the Lord.\u201d How do we subordinate ourselves to our Lord? Well, we want to serve Him, we want to honor Him, we want to dignify Him, and we want to exalt Him\u2014we could come up with many more adjectives. All of these adjectives are what we could call <em>proactive<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we look at submission as a passive state, where we kind of almost become a doormat and just do what our husbands says when we are in disagreement. No\u2014Paul is talking about something here that is very proactive. He\u2019s saying: \u201cWomen, I want you to take your one thing into your own hands. It\u2019s for you to apply this proactively all the time: serve your husband, dignify your husband, and exalt your husband.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet\u2019s make it really practical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I think what Paul is saying here is: \u201cFind out what your husband\u2019s interests are \/ what his needs are and do whatever it takes to meet them.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is a part of how we\u2014we\u2019re back to what we talked about earlier\u2014how we glorify God, how we put on display what the glory of God is because the Son, Jesus, did this with the Father throughout His ministry \/ throughout His life. He said: \u201cAll I want to do is what pleases the Father. All I want to do is what will honor the Father. I don\u2019t live to do anything else.\u201d When a wife takes that responsibility, she\u2019s being like Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> You know, that is so profound, Bob\u2014it is so good! Because what you\u2019re saying is: \u201cIt\u2019s exaltation through subordination.\u201d Jesus subordinated Himself to the Father and, in some sense, He subordinated Himself to <em>us<\/em> in that He took our sins off our shoulders \/ He put himself almost at a lower level than us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat was the result of that? \u201cGod highly exalted Him, gave Him the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee would bow\u2026every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord\u2026 [Phil. 2:9, 10]. We need to stop thinking the way the world thinks because\u2014it\u2019s not only wrong\u2014it the opposite of right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen\u2014can I just say one more thing? When a woman seeks to dignify her husband, she does not lose! She is <em>exalted<\/em> by being used by God to create a man much better than the one she married. She, through her subordination then\u2014she is exalted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, it is the same thing for the man\u2014he loves his wife like Christ loves the church. Look what we have, here in Ephesians 5\u2014what happens? Well it says: \u201c\u2026that He might sanctify her,\u201d\u2014that means: \u201cSet her apart by his love,\u201d\u2014\u201cthat he might cleanse her by the washing of water\u2026 [Eph. 5:26]\u201d\u2014not sure what that means \/ commentators wrestle with that one\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it has to do, certainly, with taking the dirt, and the grime, and the dirty baggage that she once had, and because you love her unconditionally, starts to clean up \/ it starts to go away. Instead of being critical of our wives for her past, we love her and watch the sully-ness disappear from her. It goes on: \u201c\u2026so that He might present the church\u201d\u2014of course, He is referring to the church here as well\u2014\u201din splendor, without spot, wrinkle, or any such thing; that she might be holy without blemish.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHusbands\u2014we love our wives\u2014like giving ourselves up for them \/ making their lives more important than our own\u2014we don\u2019t hurt ourselves. We present back to ourselves a woman in radiance \/ in splendor. Love is the most powerful transforming agent this world\u2019s ever seen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Especially when it\u2019s Christ\u2019s love in us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you tell a story in your book that illustrates that. Men don\u2019t want to die to self\u2014they want to live for themselves. We\u2019ve been talking about wives submitting to their husbands; and certainly; from a political correctness; <em>that<\/em> goes totally against the grain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, there\u2019s almost a sense here in which what we\u2019re talking about is\u2014because both of those things go against the grain of men and of women\u2014it\u2019s almost like it has to be the Scriptures because God is calling us away from ourselves and from our own rights. I appreciate the way you\u2019ve explained this, Tim. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou tell a story in the book\u2014that Bob referred to earlier\u2014about a man who took on an assignment of loving his wife\u2014an unusual assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Yes. He\u2019s one of my best friends. He was getting married, and we got to know his wife a little bit. Immediately, concerns rose in our minds that she probably wasn\u2019t the right person for him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You saw some yellow flags in this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tim:<\/strong> Saw some yellow \/ saw some red flags. She was somewhat abrasive, very opinionated, controlling. Some of the things she said demean the person she was talking to right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI scooted up the courage, as a godly friend ought to do, to go to him and just reason with him. It was hard for me to do this\u2014I don\u2019t like confrontation, but this was something that was needed to save this man from a very bad marriage. And I did\u2014I went and I said, \u201cListen, these are the things I\u2019ve been observing in this person you\u2019re about to marry.\u201d After I had finished, he looked at me; and smiling, he said, \u201cWell, Tim, all I can say to you is, \u2018I love her.\u2019\u201d At the time, I thought: \u201cOf all the sentimental drivel, haven\u2019t you wrestled with anything I\u2019ve just said?! Can\u2019t you respond to any of the things that I\u2019ve seen?\u201d All he could say was, \u201cI just love her.\u201d It was clearly\u2014he wanted that to be his answer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShortly, thereafter, Lesli and I went to England. We were in England seven years. One of the people to invite us over to their home was this couple\u2014they\u2019d been married seven years now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we sat down to the dinner table\u2014and we listened to the conversation \/ them with us\u2014it was immediately arresting because this woman was still a very strong personality but there was a tenderness, and a gentleness, and a sweetness, and a caring that we didn\u2019t ever see in her before. Lesli and I were actually sitting across from each other at the table, and we\u2019re hitting feet. I was touching her toe every time this woman would say something so out of character from what I remembered. We\u2019d been kicking each other all night, just in amazement, for this woman had changed so much. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI couldn\u2019t wait to get in the car and say to Lesli: \u201cWhat\u2019s going on? What happened here?\u201d When we did get in the car, and before I started the ignition, I turned to my wife and I said, \u201cHoney what happened to her?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer answer was: \u201cHe has loved her. He has loved her. He has taken up her life and made it his own.\u201d I thought to myself: \u201cOf course, that\u2019s what\u2019s happened. Why did I ask?\u201d This is what Paul says in Ephesians 5\u2014he says, \u201cWhen we love our wives as Christ loves the church, watch what happens to her. She\u2019ll become more beautiful than you ever imagined could be possible.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis is right\u2014we husbands \/ we men\u2014we think we change our wives by pointing out their defects and their shortcomings, and their lack of discipline, or whatever it might be. Well, you do that over the course of a lifetime\u2014you produce a hen-pecking wife. Why?\u2014because she has no other defense than to defend herself\u2014the hen has come home to roost; and you\u2019re the cause of it, men. Paul is saying: \u201cMen, you don\u2019t get it! Love your wife as Christ loves the church and look what she\u2019ll become\u2014radiant \/ beautiful.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cHusbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Tim\u2014thanks for your book, your life, your ministry and for being real, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.
