It's a test of a team's skill and a coach's savvy. Long before the players ever show up on the court, it can be a test of an individual\u2019s character as well. That was the case for Coach John Wooden in 1948.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I had one black player on my team. They wouldn't let them play in the tournament, and I wouldn't go without him because he was a part of the team. Finally, they reluctantly said that he could come; but he couldn't stay in the nearby hotel where the teams were staying. He would have to stay someplace else. He could have his meals there, providing we would take them in a private room. I refused the invitation and wouldn't go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, March 30<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn Wooden would go on to be one of the greatest basketball coaches\u2014perhaps one of the greatest coaches\u2014in all of sport\u2019s history. But he was known as much for his character as he was for his coaching. Today, we\u2019ll reflect on the life and legacy of the Coach\u2014John Wooden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. Over the years, as we\u2019ve had different guests on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, many of them have been kind enough to sign a copy of the book that they have written as we\u2019ve done interviews with them. I think maybe your favorite autographed book that you\u2019ve ever received from a guest is the one you received from our guest today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was 13 years ago when we sat down with Coach John Wooden and interviewed him. Then you asked him to sign the book that he wrote.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s one of my favorite stories about a guest\u2014in asking for a signature on a book, Bob. I told Coach Wooden\u2014and if you don\u2019t know who Coach Wooden was, it\u2019s too bad, here at the NCAA time for the Final Four \/ the national championship in basketball. He was arguably the finest basketball coach that has ever lived\u2014ten national championships \/ coached at UCLA from 1948 until 1975\u2014that\u2019s a <em>long<\/em> time\u2014and didn\u2019t win a national championship for the first dozen or so years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, it took several years before he got his first one. But you\u2019re right, Bob\u2014one of my favorite stories is about asking Coach Wooden to give me his signature on a book that he\u2019d written about success. I said: \u201cCoach Wooden, we\u2019ve spent some time here interviewing you. We\u2019ve had a good time\u2014I\u2019ve loved interacting with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s been a great broadcast that we\u2019ve been able to tape. I just wonder\u2014you don\u2019t know this about me \/ I didn\u2019t divulge it during the interview\u2014but I played basketball in a small town in Southwest Missouri\u2014it was a real small town. There were 43 in my graduating class. I was a pretty good scorer.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I said, \u201cI was playing during the time you coached.\u201d I said, \u201cI was just\u2014you don\u2019t know this\u2014but I went to school on scholarship in college to a small junior college. Would you just mind writing in the front of your book: \u2018Dennis, you could have played for me at UCLA. Coach Wooden.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCoach Wooden looked up at me\u2014you\u2019d have to have known this guy. He was 92 years and had a twinkle in his eyes. He says, \u201cGive me a pen.\u201d So he took the pen\u2014had a grin that kind of wrinkled its way across his face and a little bit of a smirk. He wrote something and then closed the book\u2014gave me my pen back and handed me the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, it\u2019s my favorite\u2014it is absolutely my favorite. At 92, he was this quick\u2014this is what he wrote: \u201cDennis, since I never recruited from out of state, why didn\u2019t you call me? Coach Wooden.\u201d [Laughter] I mean\u2014what a hoot! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re in for a real treat\u2014to listen to today\u2019s broadcast, which really involves some heroism around some of the racial unrest of basketball in the early days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Coach Wooden was, not only a great basketball coach, and a man of character and principle, but he was also a champion of civil rights for his players. He shared that story with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A story that you tell that I want you to share with our listeners came at the conclusion of your first year at Indiana State University, where you won the conference title. You received an invitation to play in the NAIA Tournament, but you turned them down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> First of all, my first two years were teaching at Dayton, Kentucky; and then I went to South Bend. I taught in South Bend High School, but I went back to South Bend after the war. I was discharged in January of 1946 and finished that school year. At the end of that school year, I went to Indiana State University, where my high school coach had been the coach; and he left. The president called me and offered me the position and I took it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had a pretty good year, the first year. The NAIA Tournament is played in Kansas City. There were 32 teams then. I had one black player on my team, and they wouldn't let them play in the tournament. So even though this was\u2014of the 12 men on the team, he played the least of all \/ he didn't get to play very much\u2014and I wouldn't go without him because he was a part of the team. So I refused the invitation and wouldn't go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the next year, I had everybody back on this team\u2014exactly the same team\u2014no one came in and beat anybody else out. The next year, we had a good year and were invited again; and I refused again. Finally, they reluctantly said that he could come, but he couldn't stay in the nearby hotel where the teams were staying. He'd have to stay someplace else. He could have his meals there, providing we would take them in a private room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cNo; I wouldn't do that\u201d; but I was persuaded by the NCAA and his parents that we should go\u2014it might help. So we went. He stayed with a minister and his wife and came into the hotel from the game. He didn't get to play very much at all, but that was the first black player that had ever played in that tournament. I think, a few years later, an all-black team won. We sort of opened the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As your career was taking off, you were also in the process of beginning your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou had a daughter and a son. What I wonder is\u2014I wonder: \u201cHow did you juggle the tension of your marriage, your family, your faith, and a demanding profession? What value, in your core, as a man, was your measurement? How did you juggle it all?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I wish Nellie were here to answer that question for you. Well, Nan, of course, was born in Dayton, Kentucky, when I was down there; and then Jim was born in South Bend two years later. I tried\u2014definitely tried\u2014Nellie always went to games with me. I wouldn't leave her to go scout, or anything of that sort, unless she couldn't go\u2014not bring basketball home \/ I tried not to do that. Now, can you do that 100 percent?\u2014probably not \/ but I tried not to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNellie, when she was interviewed at times\u2014I'd heard her say that: \"John never brought the games home. I could never tell, after a game \/ after a practice\"\u2014of course, she was practically at all the games\u2014\"but never after a practice \/ I could not tell by his demeanor whether he had a good practice, or a bad practice, or any problems at all.\" Maybe she stretched the truth a little bit there, but I certainly tried not to. I wanted\u2014next to faith, I wanted family first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You obviously figured out how to win without it being the consuming job that some coaches make it out to be today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> But not without good players. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That does help; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> You bet it does! I\u2019m often asked: \u201cWhat schools gave you the greatest problems when you were teaching?\u201d I\u2019d say, \u201cThe ones with the best players,\u201d\u2014that was always the case. [Laughter] I was fortunate in having good players \/ excellent players. When you do well, that attracts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know\u2014after we won our first championships, it was so much easier\u2014recruiting became unbelievably easier than it had been before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How did Nellie keep your family on the track and help John Wooden, as a man, keep his priorities? I mean, you undoubtedly had your moments when you would work too hard, too long, and be a little too consumed with it all. How did she come alongside you?\u2014how was she a good helpmate and counterpart to the Coach?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, she was just a good mother and a good wife. We had a little disagreement. I remember one time many, many, many, many years ago\u2014many years before I lost her\u2014we had a little disagreement. I left the house to go to work, and I didn\u2019t leave in the manner I should have; but when I went to bed that night, there was a little note on my pillow with a card. It's still there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it says: \"Don't try to understand me. Just love me,\" and that's it. I think we had a great relationship more than anything else. I've said that when we\u2014we talked about this and: \u201cGracious! We're going to disagree on a lot of things; but let's try not to be disagreeable.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a little tradition that you and Nellie enjoyed right before the game started. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Back when I was playing in high school, she played in the band. I'd try to position myself where I could look up and see her in the band. She always gave me a [blow a kiss], and I'd give her a wink or a nod. That continued, you know, in my teaching days. Before every game, I'd find her; and I'd give her a wink or a nod. That's probably what you're thinking of\u2014superstition? No, it wasn't superstition\u2014it just made me feel good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Just a little wink.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's right; that's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You wound up as the coach of UCLA because of a snowstorm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us how you got that job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I was considering both UCLA and the University of Minnesota. They had both offered me jobs, and I wanted to stay in the Midwest in the Big 10. UCLA was going to call an hour after Minnesota was going to call. Minnesota didn't call, and UCLA called; and I accepted. About an hour later, I got a call from Minnesota, saying everything was all worked out. I said: \"I'm sorry, I've committed myself. I can't back out now.\" There was what they called an \"unseasonable\" snowstorm that had the lines down, and they couldn't get to a phone to call me at the time\u2014they said. So that's how close it came.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to know, Coach, <em>why<\/em> you chose coaching. I mean, you said you loved to teach English\u2014you were a teacher at heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy did you do it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I went to Purdue to become a civil engineer\u2014that's what I wanted to do\u2014but I didn't know that, to get your degree in civil engineering, you had to go to civil camp every summer. Well, I knew I couldn't go to civil camp every summer. I had to work in the summers\u2014so I couldn't do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I changed to a Liberal Arts course and majored in English. I knew, from that time on: \u201cI'm going to teach.\u201d I enjoyed teaching as time went by. I enjoyed it. I taught English in high school, and I wanted to be a good English teacher; and I enjoyed teaching. Who was it?\u2014said that \u201cYou find a job that you enjoy, you'll never work a day in your life.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you view coaching as teaching?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Of course, it is. That's all it is\u2014you're teaching sports. You've heard some of my players\u2014particularly some of the talkative ones, like Bill Walton, will often say in his interviews that \u201cCoach was Teacher.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Coach, as you taught, you believed in teaching about the fundamentals.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In fact, in coming into this studio, I should have brought a pair of socks\u2014[Laughter] athletic socks\u2014into the studio because you took high school stars\u2014you began with a very simple point of instruction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's correct. I taught them how to put on their socks and their shoes. I wanted no wrinkles in the socks, and I'd show them how to put it on and smooth out around the little toe. Your blisters usually come from around the little toe or the heel area. I wanted to show them how to do that because I know, if you don't, they just pull them up and they don\u2019t get all the wrinkles out. I showed them how to put on their socks and shoes. When I started doing that, back when I was teaching in high school, I found out it did cut down on blisters a lot. Now basketball is played on a hard floor. The game is stops\/starts, change of direction, change of pace, and things like that. If there is any friction in there, you will get blisters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also found out that most of my players wore shoes that were perhaps a size \/ at least, half a size larger than I wanted them to wear because I wanted their toes right at the end\u2014not bent up but right at the end. I usually fit them in shoes to make sure they fit. I think they had the tendency to wear shoes that were maybe a size larger than they should. I think that came from parental teaching, again, because, when you have little children\u2014you know, you buy their shoes and you get them a thumbnail too long. By the time their foot grows into that, the shoe is worn out so you have to get a new pair, a thumbnail too long. Children never get to wear shoes that really fit them! [Laughter] I did that. I think\u2014it was just an important thing\u2014a little detail\u2014but little details is what make big things happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had some players who obviously became players of note, not only in college, but on into the NBA. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of them seem to be outside of the Wooden paradigm\u2014if I can call it that. You know, Bill Walton does not strike me as the prototypical John Wooden basketball player. It almost seems like: \u201cHere's a guy who can play the game; but here is a disciplined coach and a player who\u2014well, discipline was not high on his list of virtues\u201d; was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> In certain areas, you might say that; but Bill is very dear to me. For many, many years, he calls me three or four times a week from all over. At the time he played for me, it was a time of the anti-establishment. He was anti-establishment very much at that particular time. I was concerned about money and things, but I have no right to determine the politics of my players, nor, actually, their religion\u2014that's them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he's a good student, he's an honor student, he's in the Academic Hall of Fame. When he came on the basketball floor, you couldn't ask\u2014no one could ask for a player to be more cooperative \/ set a great example. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo one worked harder\u2014never a problem in any way\u2014but he had his little quirks, as we all have, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What about his facial hair though? He did show up one time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, he decided I didn't have the right to tell him how to wear his hair. I said: \"You're absolutely right, Bill, I don't have. All I have the right is to determine who plays, and we're going to miss you.\" [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said, \"If you want to keep the beard, you're off the team\"?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is an All-American you're talking to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you drew a line in the sand over the facial hair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I did; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what did Bill do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> He hurried and got fixed up then. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He shaved his beard off; didn't he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> And he's been asked, \"Do you think Coach would have gone through with it?\" And he said, \"Well, you know what I did; don\u2019t you?\" [Laughter] If I have a rule, I'm going to stand by it. But always remember there can be a gray area at times. There was a time in my teaching that I had no gray area\u2014it was either black or white with me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI made two mistakes\u2014I made many\u2014but I know two that I recall that I regret very much because I didn't see the gray area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What are those two?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, I had a rule in high school that smoking was an automatic dismissal from the squad for the year. My finest player\u2014my only center I had\u2014I caught him smoking, and I dismissed him. I had the rule\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you think it's a mistake, now, looking back?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, he quit school. He would have gone on to college. I think I was wrong. I should have handled it in a different way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was the second thing, you said, that you regretted?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I had a player that didn't qualify for his letter\u2014this was in high school. He was a fine person that worked very, very hard. Anyway, his dad came in one day, and called me, and wondered if I'd come out and talk to him. I did; and he said, \"Is Joe going to get a letter?\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said\u2014you know, tact\u2014I said, \"Well, I haven't really decided yet.\" And he said, \"I'll tell you this\u2014\"\u2014remember, I'm just a young man \/ was very, very young\u2014and he said, \"I'll tell you\u2014if he doesn't, I'm going to have your job.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He threatened you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Yes; he did. I didn't like that, and I ended up by not giving the boy his letter. I feel, down deep in my heart, that I would have given him the letter if it weren\u2019t for the dad. I did something to the youngster because of the dad, and that's wrong\u2014that\u2019s wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been spending time this week revisiting a conversation we had more than 13 years ago with a basketball legend, Coach John Wooden, who coached basketball at UCLA from 1948-1975\u2014ten national championships. But beyond his basketball ability, he was a man who had great character and cared more about the character of his players than he did about their skill as basketball players.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; just listening back to that last story, Bob, here\u2019s arguably the finest coach in <em>any<\/em> sport who has ever coached. I mean, he was a <em>brilliant<\/em> professor of sorts of basketball. In fact, we asked him, \u201cWhat else would you have done if you hadn\u2019t been a coach?\u201d And he said: \u201cOh, I would have taught. I almost became a professor at the university.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here he is\u2014at the end of his life\u2014he\u2019s reflecting, at 92 years of age, a regret of how he had made a moral judgment and how he treated a young man\u2014and just sharing how, even\u2014you know, what?\u201450 years later \/ 30 years later\u2014how he was regretting that \/ was looking back, going: \u201cThat was wrong. I shouldn\u2019t have done that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think sometimes we make these great people, like John Wooden, into saints and don\u2019t realize that they, too, struggled with their own humanity at points. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s okay to have some regrets and to keep on running. Coach Wooden ran all the way to the finish line\u2014he was a winner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Along the way, he marked a lot of lives\u2014certainly, the guys who played for him, and the assistant coaches, and those who were around him. test. They wouldn't let them play in the tournament, and I wouldn't go without him because he was a part of the team. Finally, they reluctantly said that he could come; but he couldn't stay in the nearby hotel where the teams were staying. He would have to stay someplace else. He could have his meals there, providing we would take them in a private room. I refused the invitation and wouldn't go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, March 30<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJohn Wooden would go on to be one of the greatest basketball coaches\u2014perhaps one of the greatest coaches\u2014in all of sport\u2019s history. But he was known as much for his character as he was for his coaching. Today, we\u2019ll reflect on the life and legacy of the Coach\u2014John Wooden. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. Over the years, as we\u2019ve had different guests on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, many of them have been kind enough to sign a copy of the book that they have written as we\u2019ve done interviews with them. I think maybe your favorite autographed book that you\u2019ve ever received from a guest is the one you received from our guest today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was 13 years ago when we sat down with Coach John Wooden and interviewed him. Then you asked him to sign the book that he wrote.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s one of my favorite stories about a guest\u2014in asking for a signature on a book, Bob. I told Coach Wooden\u2014and if you don\u2019t know who Coach Wooden was, it\u2019s too bad, here at the NCAA time for the Final Four \/ the national championship in basketball. He was arguably the finest basketball coach that has ever lived\u2014ten national championships \/ coached at UCLA from 1948 until 1975\u2014that\u2019s a <em>long<\/em> time\u2014and didn\u2019t win a national championship for the first dozen or so years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, it took several years before he got his first one. But you\u2019re right, Bob\u2014one of my favorite stories is about asking Coach Wooden to give me his signature on a book that he\u2019d written about success. I said: \u201cCoach Wooden, we\u2019ve spent some time here interviewing you. We\u2019ve had a good time\u2014I\u2019ve loved interacting with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s been a great broadcast that we\u2019ve been able to tape. I just wonder\u2014you don\u2019t know this about me \/ I didn\u2019t divulge it during the interview\u2014but I played basketball in a small town in Southwest Missouri\u2014it was a real small town. There were 43 in my graduating class. I was a pretty good scorer.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I said, \u201cI was playing during the time you coached.\u201d I said, \u201cI was just\u2014you don\u2019t know this\u2014but I went to school on scholarship in college to a small junior college. Would you just mind writing in the front of your book: \u2018Dennis, you could have played for me at UCLA. Coach Wooden.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCoach Wooden looked up at me\u2014you\u2019d have to have known this guy. He was 92 years and had a twinkle in his eyes. He says, \u201cGive me a pen.\u201d So he took the pen\u2014had a grin that kind of wrinkled its way across his face and a little bit of a smirk. He wrote something and then closed the book\u2014gave me my pen back and handed me the book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, it\u2019s my favorite\u2014it is absolutely my favorite. At 92, he was this quick\u2014this is what he wrote: \u201cDennis, since I never recruited from out of state, why didn\u2019t you call me? Coach Wooden.\u201d [Laughter] I mean\u2014what a hoot! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re in for a real treat\u2014to listen to today\u2019s broadcast, which really involves some heroism around some of the racial unrest of basketball in the early days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Coach Wooden was, not only a great basketball coach, and a man of character and principle, but he was also a champion of civil rights for his players. He shared that story with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A story that you tell that I want you to share with our listeners came at the conclusion of your first year at Indiana State University, where you won the conference title. You received an invitation to play in the NAIA Tournament, but you turned them down. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> First of all, my first two years were teaching at Dayton, Kentucky; and then I went to South Bend. I taught in South Bend High School, but I went back to South Bend after the war. I was discharged in January of 1946 and finished that school year. At the end of that school year, I went to Indiana State University, where my high school coach had been the coach; and he left. The president called me and offered me the position and I took it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had a pretty good year, the first year. The NAIA Tournament is played in Kansas City. There were 32 teams then. I had one black player on my team, and they wouldn't let them play in the tournament. So even though this was\u2014of the 12 men on the team, he played the least of all \/ he didn't get to play very much\u2014and I wouldn't go without him because he was a part of the team. So I refused the invitation and wouldn't go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the next year, I had everybody back on this team\u2014exactly the same team\u2014no one came in and beat anybody else out. The next year, we had a good year and were invited again; and I refused again. Finally, they reluctantly said that he could come, but he couldn't stay in the nearby hotel where the teams were staying. He'd have to stay someplace else. He could have his meals there, providing we would take them in a private room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cNo; I wouldn't do that\u201d; but I was persuaded by the NCAA and his parents that we should go\u2014it might help. So we went. He stayed with a minister and his wife and came into the hotel from the game. He didn't get to play very much at all, but that was the first black player that had ever played in that tournament. I think, a few years later, an all-black team won. We sort of opened the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> As your career was taking off, you were also in the process of beginning your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou had a daughter and a son. What I wonder is\u2014I wonder: \u201cHow did you juggle the tension of your marriage, your family, your faith, and a demanding profession? What value, in your core, as a man, was your measurement? How did you juggle it all?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I wish Nellie were here to answer that question for you. Well, Nan, of course, was born in Dayton, Kentucky, when I was down there; and then Jim was born in South Bend two years later. I tried\u2014definitely tried\u2014Nellie always went to games with me. I wouldn't leave her to go scout, or anything of that sort, unless she couldn't go\u2014not bring basketball home \/ I tried not to do that. Now, can you do that 100 percent?\u2014probably not \/ but I tried not to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNellie, when she was interviewed at times\u2014I'd heard her say that: \"John never brought the games home. I could never tell, after a game \/ after a practice\"\u2014of course, she was practically at all the games\u2014\"but never after a practice \/ I could not tell by his demeanor whether he had a good practice, or a bad practice, or any problems at all.\" Maybe she stretched the truth a little bit there, but I certainly tried not to. I wanted\u2014next to faith, I wanted family first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You obviously figured out how to win without it being the consuming job that some coaches make it out to be today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> But not without good players. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That does help; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> You bet it does! I\u2019m often asked: \u201cWhat schools gave you the greatest problems when you were teaching?\u201d I\u2019d say, \u201cThe ones with the best players,\u201d\u2014that was always the case. [Laughter] I was fortunate in having good players \/ excellent players. When you do well, that attracts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know\u2014after we won our first championships, it was so much easier\u2014recruiting became unbelievably easier than it had been before. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How did Nellie keep your family on the track and help John Wooden, as a man, keep his priorities? I mean, you undoubtedly had your moments when you would work too hard, too long, and be a little too consumed with it all. How did she come alongside you?\u2014how was she a good helpmate and counterpart to the Coach?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, she was just a good mother and a good wife. We had a little disagreement. I remember one time many, many, many, many years ago\u2014many years before I lost her\u2014we had a little disagreement. I left the house to go to work, and I didn\u2019t leave in the manner I should have; but when I went to bed that night, there was a little note on my pillow with a card. It's still there\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it says: \"Don't try to understand me. Just love me,\" and that's it. I think we had a great relationship more than anything else. I've said that when we\u2014we talked about this and: \u201cGracious! We're going to disagree on a lot of things; but let's try not to be disagreeable.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a little tradition that you and Nellie enjoyed right before the game started. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Back when I was playing in high school, she played in the band. I'd try to position myself where I could look up and see her in the band. She always gave me a [blow a kiss], and I'd give her a wink or a nod. That continued, you know, in my teaching days. Before every game, I'd find her; and I'd give her a wink or a nod. That's probably what you're thinking of\u2014superstition? No, it wasn't superstition\u2014it just made me feel good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Just a little wink.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's right; that's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You wound up as the coach of UCLA because of a snowstorm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us how you got that job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I was considering both UCLA and the University of Minnesota. They had both offered me jobs, and I wanted to stay in the Midwest in the Big 10. UCLA was going to call an hour after Minnesota was going to call. Minnesota didn't call, and UCLA called; and I accepted. About an hour later, I got a call from Minnesota, saying everything was all worked out. I said: \"I'm sorry, I've committed myself. I can't back out now.\" There was what they called an \"unseasonable\" snowstorm that had the lines down, and they couldn't get to a phone to call me at the time\u2014they said. So that's how close it came.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to know, Coach, <em>why<\/em> you chose coaching. I mean, you said you loved to teach English\u2014you were a teacher at heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhy did you do it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I went to Purdue to become a civil engineer\u2014that's what I wanted to do\u2014but I didn't know that, to get your degree in civil engineering, you had to go to civil camp every summer. Well, I knew I couldn't go to civil camp every summer. I had to work in the summers\u2014so I couldn't do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I changed to a Liberal Arts course and majored in English. I knew, from that time on: \u201cI'm going to teach.\u201d I enjoyed teaching as time went by. I enjoyed it. I taught English in high school, and I wanted to be a good English teacher; and I enjoyed teaching. Who was it?\u2014said that \u201cYou find a job that you enjoy, you'll never work a day in your life.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you view coaching as teaching?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Of course, it is. That's all it is\u2014you're teaching sports. You've heard some of my players\u2014particularly some of the talkative ones, like Bill Walton, will often say in his interviews that \u201cCoach was Teacher.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Coach, as you taught, you believed in teaching about the fundamentals.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In fact, in coming into this studio, I should have brought a pair of socks\u2014[Laughter] athletic socks\u2014into the studio because you took high school stars\u2014you began with a very simple point of instruction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's correct. I taught them how to put on their socks and their shoes. I wanted no wrinkles in the socks, and I'd show them how to put it on and smooth out around the little toe. Your blisters usually come from around the little toe or the heel area. I wanted to show them how to do that because I know, if you don't, they just pull them up and they don\u2019t get all the wrinkles out. I showed them how to put on their socks and shoes. When I started doing that, back when I was teaching in high school, I found out it did cut down on blisters a lot. Now basketball is played on a hard floor. The game is stops\/starts, change of direction, change of pace, and things like that. If there is any friction in there, you will get blisters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also found out that most of my players wore shoes that were perhaps a size \/ at least, half a size larger than I wanted them to wear because I wanted their toes right at the end\u2014not bent up but right at the end. I usually fit them in shoes to make sure they fit. I think they had the tendency to wear shoes that were maybe a size larger than they should. I think that came from parental teaching, again, because, when you have little children\u2014you know, you buy their shoes and you get them a thumbnail too long. By the time their foot grows into that, the shoe is worn out so you have to get a new pair, a thumbnail too long. Children never get to wear shoes that really fit them! [Laughter] I did that. I think\u2014it was just an important thing\u2014a little detail\u2014but little details is what make big things happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You had some players who obviously became players of note, not only in college, but on into the NBA. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of them seem to be outside of the Wooden paradigm\u2014if I can call it that. You know, Bill Walton does not strike me as the prototypical John Wooden basketball player. It almost seems like: \u201cHere's a guy who can play the game; but here is a disciplined coach and a player who\u2014well, discipline was not high on his list of virtues\u201d; was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> In certain areas, you might say that; but Bill is very dear to me. For many, many years, he calls me three or four times a week from all over. At the time he played for me, it was a time of the anti-establishment. He was anti-establishment very much at that particular time. I was concerned about money and things, but I have no right to determine the politics of my players, nor, actually, their religion\u2014that's them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he's a good student, he's an honor student, he's in the Academic Hall of Fame. When he came on the basketball floor, you couldn't ask\u2014no one could ask for a player to be more cooperative \/ set a great example. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo one worked harder\u2014never a problem in any way\u2014but he had his little quirks, as we all have, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What about his facial hair though? He did show up one time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, he decided I didn't have the right to tell him how to wear his hair. I said: \"You're absolutely right, Bill, I don't have. All I have the right is to determine who plays, and we're going to miss you.\" [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said, \"If you want to keep the beard, you're off the team\"?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is an All-American you're talking to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But you drew a line in the sand over the facial hair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I did; I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what did Bill do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> He hurried and got fixed up then. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He shaved his beard off; didn't he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> And he's been asked, \"Do you think Coach would have gone through with it?\" And he said, \"Well, you know what I did; don\u2019t you?\" [Laughter] If I have a rule, I'm going to stand by it. But always remember there can be a gray area at times. There was a time in my teaching that I had no gray area\u2014it was either black or white with me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI made two mistakes\u2014I made many\u2014but I know two that I recall that I regret very much because I didn't see the gray area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What are those two?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, I had a rule in high school that smoking was an automatic dismissal from the squad for the year. My finest player\u2014my only center I had\u2014I caught him smoking, and I dismissed him. I had the rule\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you think it's a mistake, now, looking back?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Well, he quit school. He would have gone on to college. I think I was wrong. I should have handled it in a different way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was the second thing, you said, that you regretted?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> I had a player that didn't qualify for his letter\u2014this was in high school. He was a fine person that worked very, very hard. Anyway, his dad came in one day, and called me, and wondered if I'd come out and talk to him. I did; and he said, \"Is Joe going to get a letter?\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said\u2014you know, tact\u2014I said, \"Well, I haven't really decided yet.\" And he said, \"I'll tell you this\u2014\"\u2014remember, I'm just a young man \/ was very, very young\u2014and he said, \"I'll tell you\u2014if he doesn't, I'm going to have your job.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He threatened you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong> Yes; he did. I didn't like that, and I ended up by not giving the boy his letter. I feel, down deep in my heart, that I would have given him the letter if it weren\u2019t for the dad. I did something to the youngster because of the dad, and that's wrong\u2014that\u2019s wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been spending time this week revisiting a conversation we had more than 13 years ago with a basketball legend, Coach John Wooden, who coached basketball at UCLA from 1948-1975\u2014ten national championships. But beyond his basketball ability, he was a man who had great character and cared more about the character of his players than he did about their skill as basketball players.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; just listening back to that last story, Bob, here\u2019s arguably the finest coach in <em>any<\/em> sport who has ever coached. I mean, he was a <em>brilliant<\/em> professor of sorts of basketball. In fact, we asked him, \u201cWhat else would you have done if you hadn\u2019t been a coach?\u201d And he said: \u201cOh, I would have taught. I almost became a professor at the university.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here he is\u2014at the end of his life\u2014he\u2019s reflecting, at 92 years of age, a regret of how he had made a moral judgment and how he treated a young man\u2014and just sharing how, even\u2014you know, what?\u201450 years later \/ 30 years later\u2014how he was regretting that \/ was looking back, going: \u201cThat was wrong. I shouldn\u2019t have done that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think sometimes we make these great people, like John Wooden, into saints and don\u2019t realize that they, too, struggled with their own humanity at points. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s okay to have some regrets and to keep on running. Coach Wooden ran all the way to the finish line\u2014he was a winner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Along the way, he marked a lot of lives\u2014certainly, the guys who played for him, and the assistant coaches, and those who were around him.
