As a result of that, it\u2019s caused pornography to be viewed because it\u2019s accessible, it\u2019s affordable, and it fits into culture. That\u2019s how we got to where we are today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, March 28<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ll spend time today with Josh McDowell, talking about how we respond to the pornography epidemic in our culture and how we raise our children to embrace moral purity. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, do you know anyone who has given 41,000 messages and has spoken 27,000 times at more than\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014125 countries and has written 145 books?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As a matter of fact I do. [Laughter] I\u2019ve got the same bio in front of me that you\u2019ve got in front of you\u2014[Laughter] \u2014so, yes, I know him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Josh McDowell joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Josh and his wife Dottie have been married for more than 40 years. They have four grown children and\u2014count \u2018em\u2014ten grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou actually have called the nation, next week, to join you in a landmark conference addressing the subject of pornography. Why are you doing this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> One, because I have ten grandchildren I run scared for. After all my research, I have a lot of sleepless nights simply because of my grandchildren and other people\u2019s children and grandchildren. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProbably six years ago now, I started to <em>sense<\/em> something in young people\u2014in their belief system and their language, sexually. I said, \u201cThere\u2019s something <em>wrong<\/em> here.\u201d Usually, I can figure it out real fast\u2014it took me six months. I figured out what it was\u2014it\u2019s pervasive internet pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found\u2014as soon as any person, young or old, starts watching pornography, it immediately starts to erode the authorities in their life\u2014the authority of their parents, their pastor, their church\u2014but mainly the authority of the Scriptures. I just concluded, guys: \u201cSomeone\u2019s got to step forward. I have to or I can\u2019t sleep at night with a clear conscience.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is an interesting observation\u2014I\u2019m just kind of processing it\u2014that there would be a relationship between viewing pornography and an erosion of authority. Here\u2019s kind of the conclusion I\u2019m drawing as I hear you say that: \u201cThe stimulation that comes from viewing pornography is so great in a person\u2019s brain that they will remove any authority barriers that try to keep them from that\u2014to get to it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs that it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s\u2014boy! That\u2019s a good insight! And adding to that is\u2014you have to eliminate any barriers to your intellectual\/spiritual freedom to do what you\u2019re doing\u2014to soothe your conscience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> So you start to question any authority that would say it is wrong. Then you take\u2014you know, Dennis, today\u2019s culture is: \u201cDo what is right in your own eyes. It might be true for you but not true for me.\u201d We\u2019re now seeing that, full thrust, in pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you\u2019re calling the pastors of our nation \/ the daddies of our nation\u2014men of our nation\u2014to join you in Greensboro, North Carolina, to come together for parts of four days to address this issue of pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, this is next Monday night, all day Tuesday, all day Wednesday, and half a day on Thursday. You\u2019ve got 27 speakers coming?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> I can\u2019t believe they are all coming\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014one of them\u2014Mary Anne Layden from University of Pennsylvania\u2014I said, \u201cDon\u2019t you have to look at your calendar?\u201d She said: \u201cJosh, I don\u2019t care what I have on the calendar. I will cancel it, and I will be there!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been in a ministry that has spoken to teenagers all over the world. I\u2019d just like you to summarize, Josh, the past 50 years. As you\u2019ve spoken to young people, what\u2019s happened on this subject of pornography for us to end up where we are today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>One, is the trend\u2014the shift in truth. It\u2019s gone from an objective truth in a personal Creator God to the individual: \u201cIf it\u2019s true for you, wonderful; but it\u2019s not true for me. You need to discern what is right for you \/ what is wrong for you,\u201d\u2014that has become totally mainstream in culture. So, when it comes to pornography, it\u2019s all individual. This is why hardly any Christian has a friend, who would say, \u201cPornography\u2019s wrong,\u201d because it\u2019s up to you, as an individual. That\u2019s one thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond\u2014the technology\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s gone from a magazine to video \/ now, it\u2019s gone to the internet. What the internet has done, along with the progression of breaking down of truth\u2014it has made it accessible. I mean, right now, there\u2019s two billion pages of pornography one click away! There [are] 26 <em>million<\/em> pornographic websites one click away!\u2014down at the front of your church, if you want to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Third], there\u2019s affordability. You only pay for 10 percent of pornography. All the other is free. [Fourth], there\u2019s anonymity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a result of that, it\u2019s caused pornography to be accepted to be viewed because it\u2019s accessible, it\u2019s affordable, its anonymity, and it fits into culture. That\u2019s how we got to where we are today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProbably one of the biggest ones is\u2014the church has gotten away from a clear, biblically-based, <em>exciting<\/em> foundation of sexuality in the Scriptures and the nature of God\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the beauty of one\u2019s body \/ of sex\u2014everything. Without that, you can\u2019t determine a counterfeit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I would add\u2014I think the family has gotten away from a beautiful, magnificent, biblically-based view of human sexuality that they\u2019re teaching their kids as they grow up. I mean, the church can\u2019t do it all! Parents are the ones who\u2019ve been given children\u2014to train them in how to think about sex, how to view sexual temptation, and how to handle these issues that are coming at them today as never before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> If we do not have a family relationship in faith that our kids gravitate towards it \/ really want it\u2014I don\u2019t know how any kid\u2019s going to stand up to pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I wrote the book, <em>Straight Talk with Your Kids about Sex<\/em>, I sent a video crew around to all my kids\u2019 homes because I wanted to make sure I was accurate in the stories. They asked my kids, \u201cWhen was the first time your father ever talked to you about sex?\u201d My three daughters and my son said, \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d Katie said, \u201cHe always did it\u2014at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner, on the way to church, on the way to a ballgame, way to a movie, way to home, on the way to school!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] Well, if your child can remember the first time you talked to them, you blew it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, they asked the question, \u201cWhat was your greatest motivation to staying pure?\u201d And when I read the transcript, I cried\u2014my three daughters and my son said, \u201cBecause I\u2019ve always wanted what my father has with my mother, and it\u2019s worth waiting for.\u201d Whew! If you\u2019re child does not want <em>your<\/em> faith, <em>your<\/em> sexuality, and all\u2014you\u2019re in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just want our listeners to pause and listen to what Josh had to say there. You have to have the real disease in order to pass it on to your kids. Unless you\u2019ve got it\u2014unless you have a love for Christ\u2014unless you respect and fear God and the Scriptures and allow it to be <em>the <\/em>authority<em> \/ the <\/em>governing body of thought to govern your desires\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u2014and you\u2019re living out biblical sexuality!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Song of Solomon!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in your marriage and for the kids to be able to see a healthy, loving relationship between a man and a woman\u2014that <em>is<\/em> the great apologetic for staying pure today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got to start young. The average now\u2014seeing pornography, in Christian homes and everything\u2014is eight years old. I think, in Christian homes, it\u2019s four to six years old. If, by the first time your child\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wait! Wait! Wait a second! You said, in Christian homes, it\u2019s younger\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014than the culture?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Because they put up no barriers to it\u2014they don\u2019t even think: \u201cWell, you don\u2019t talk to your kid then.\u201d \u201cYou don\u2019t ever share anything with your child then.\u201d Well they\u2019re not going to see it.\u201d Most Christian moms would say, \u201cMy kids would never seek out pornography.\u201d You miss the whole point! Pornography is seeking out your child!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI couldn\u2019t show that statistically\u2014four to six\u2014but from personal experience over the last seven years, I would have to say\u2014if somebody said, \u201cWhat is the age in Christian pastors home?\u201d Four to six years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI could write a book on the stories!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You also ran past something. I want you to just stop and help moms and dads understand about what\u2019s happening with today\u2019s youth. You whizzed by this, Josh\u2014you said, \u201cYour young person is growing up with peers, who think that pornography isn\u2019t a sin \/ isn\u2019t wrong\u2014that it is acceptable to look at pornography.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> In the church! Yes. Of Christian young men, 13-24 years of age, one out of 20 would say, \u201cI have a friend who would say pornography is wrong.\u201d Ninety-three percent of Christian 13-24-year-olds, in the largest study ever done, will say, \u201cWhenever I talk to my friends\u201d\u2014which most of them are Christian\u2014\u201cabout pornography, it\u2019s either being neutral, accepting, or encouraging to do it,\u201d\u201493 percent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wouldn\u2019t the biggest group there be the silent kids, who are just biting their tongue and saying, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to speak up and tell him he\u2019s wrong because moral relativism has influenced their belief structure\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Yes. And then here\u2014only several percentage points of Christian parents have ever talked to their children about pornography and the internet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How much\u2014what percent?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> It\u2019s about seven percent\u2014that\u2019s <em>sad<\/em>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Josh, I\u2019m absorbing all this and I\u2019m going: \u2018We\u2019re living in this pornographic pervasive culture that is out to seduce our kids. We\u2019ve thought of this as being a male problem\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but, because it\u2019s so pervasive, we\u2019re now finding it\u2019s a massive problem among young ladies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Eighteen to twenty-four-year-old Christian women\u201456 percent actively seek out porn \/ 76 percent of men\u201456 percent [of young women]. Now, women usually do it for different reasons. You can\u2019t categorize every woman and everything else, but one of the biggest reasons is women do it on how to save their marriage: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow can I save my marriage?\u201d Girls, who are exploding onto this scene, do it: \u201cHow can I keep my boyfriend?\u201d or \u201cHow can I <em>get<\/em> a boyfriend?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWomen usually seek out different types of pornography than men. Women seek out relational pornography\u2014pornography between a husband and wife \/ between two significant others\u2014something that has a relation. Men could care <em>less<\/em> about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You started off by saying the reason all of this is so troubling to you is because you have ten grandchildren. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you were able to go back today\u2014let\u2019s say you were the mom and dad of those ten grandchildren instead of being their grandpa \/ you\u2019re their mom and dad. What would you do today, raising those kids?\u2014to try to protect them as best you can \/ get them ready for what\u2019s ahead. What would you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> What I did with my four children, before all of this really hit\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014one, you must acknowledge it as a problem. Most Christian parents don\u2019t. They don\u2019t see the devastation \/ how large it is! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know how big pornography is? There are 26 million websites. Just one\u2014not even the biggest\u2014in the last 30 days, produced 29 petabytes of transferred data pornography. If you printed that out\u2014just one site of 26 million\u2014in 30 days \/ would fill 540 MILLION four-drawer file cabinets! It is so big\u2014your kids <em>will<\/em> see it. So, one\u2014you\u2019ve got to acknowledge it\u2019s a problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And let me just stop you there, Josh. When you say you\u2019re going to talk to your kids\u2014that they are going to see it. Do we need to watch our attitude about this?\u2014making it extremely shameful? I mean, how do we hold the barrier up\u2014of it being wrong or against what God wants\u2014without somehow turning our kids against our Christianity \/ our walk with Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> First, you need to develop such a loving, intimate, close family relationship that your child feels <em>totally<\/em> free to ask mommy or daddy anything\u2014and I mean ANYTHING\u2014without shame, without judgment, without starting to quote the Bible \/ which most Christian men do\u2014you do that later!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if a five-year-old comes and says, \u201cMommy, what is\u2026\u201d and then puts in anything\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. Without being self-conscience \/ without shunning away a little bit because they read your body language faster than your lips.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> You listen to them. You don\u2019t judge them, \u201cWell, you shouldn\u2019t be doing that!\u201d No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t say, first thing, \u201cWhere\u2019d you hear that?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t say that first?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, what do you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> You listen to them\u2014say, \u201cWell, tell me about it, honey.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWhat have you heard?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> So you\u2019re without judgment, without shame, without starting to quote the Scripture, and without humor\u2014\u201cOh, you\u2019re too young for that!\u201d If they\u2019re old enough for the question, they\u2019re old enough for the answer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> So you\u2019ve got to develop that family, where they\u2019re totally free. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, you need to create, within that child, a concept\u2014and I mean early \/ I think by five years old\u2014should, to a certain degree, have added in God\u2019s concept of sexuality: \u201cWhat is sex? Who created sex? How beautiful your body is,\u201d and all\u2014and how God\u2019s design is something WONDERFUL!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou say, \u201cWhy is that so important?\u201d For this reason\u2014your child <em>will<\/em> see pornography\u2014and [while] young! Here\u2019s the key\u2014I really believe\u2014if your child sees pornography and they don\u2019t have, built in, a certain type of original, they cannot detect a counterfeit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to build into my three daughters and my son an original concept. They had to see it in my life with their mother. Those are two of the biggest things you can do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What I\u2019m hearing you say, right there, is that giving your kids a picture of what sexual purity looks like \/ the benefits of that: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow good it can be when you wait until marriage, and a covenant has been established, and the safety of a marriage relationship is in place. That\u2019s when a young man and a young lady can truly experience what God designed.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. That\u2019s why, when I was in your office\u2014if you remember, I looked down and I saw <em>Passport to Identity<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>, <em>Passport to Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, etc.\u2014and I said, \u201cDennis\u2014<em>that<\/em> is the beginning of the answer to pornography! We have <em>got<\/em> to build, within our children, healthy, positive biblical teachings about their body, about sexuality, about who they are, their identity\u2014who God is \/ the relationship. If we don\u2019t do that, young, then I don\u2019t care what you teach your children. That\u2019s why, when I saw this today, I thought: \u201cWow! I\u2019m going to promote that at the <em>Set Free<\/em> <em>Summit <\/em>because it\u2019s a positive answer!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You got a sneak preview because <em>Passport to Identity<\/em> is brand-new. In fact, our listeners have just started hearing about it. In the next couple weeks, we\u2019re going to be giving them a full explanation of what this resource is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the reason you\u2019re excited about things like <em>Passport to Identity <\/em>and <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> is because we set up moms and dads to have the kinds of conversations moms and dads need to be having with their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. A parent is derelict if they don\u2019t have positive interaction with their children, right down to the nitty-gritty of sex\u2014and I mean early.So many parents say to me: \u201cI don\u2019t want my kids to hear it. I want to guard their purity.\u201d I said: \u201cOh my gosh! It\u2019s <em>knowledge<\/em>, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in a loving intimate relationship, especially with Daddy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> For years, we have pointed folks to books by\u2014you know Stanton Jones, who works at Wheaton; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Oh, of course!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So he and his wife Brenna have put together these age-related books, where you can teach your kids about sex. We\u2019ve shared those with parents for years. There\u2019s one for preschoolers, one for elementary school\u2014they\u2019re kind of graded as they go up. Those can be catalytic to having the kinds of conversations you\u2019re talking about as well; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Oh, you have to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI say to dads, \u201cListen to the mom.\u201d Mom usually has a little more insight. Her intuition is better than a man\u2019s facts. I said, \u201cKnow your child\u2014just how far you go. You don\u2019t want to create unhealthy images\u2014but boy! You\u2019ve got to go to the line today,\u201d\u2014even with books like you just described. Bob, the internet is changing it all. The internet\u2014it breaks my heart\u2014is taking it younger, and younger, and younger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow you think of this\u2014these are Christian young men, 18 to 24-year-old \/ 76 percent <em>actively<\/em>\/<em> regularly<\/em> seek out pornography\u2014for 39-60-year-olds \/ it\u2019s 47 percent\u201425 to 39-year-old \/ is 65 percent\u201418 to 24 \/ 76 [percent]. Do you see the progression?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes\u2014it\u2019s getting bigger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>The younger, the bigger. It\u2019s a <em>total<\/em> shift in culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me step in here and just let our listeners know the things we\u2019ve talked about\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> resource \/ the books by Stan and Brenna Jones\u2014these are things we\u2019ve got in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center<em>. <\/em>Our listeners can come and get more information about how they can get the resources. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a link on our website, Josh, to the event that you\u2019re doing next week in Greensboro. I wish every camp director in America could be there because 50 percent of even your children camps watch pornography. Usually, when it becomes known in the camp, they handle it totally wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I\u2019d say we need to have daddies there. I\u2019d say we need to have mommies there. Single moms \/ single dads ought to come to this because it\u2019s not a matter of <em>if<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s a matter of <em>what<\/em> your kids are going to see. It\u2019s a matter of how they\u2019re prepared to handle this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know a lot of people are going to have to clear out their schedule to be able to do it\u2014take a couple of days off from work\u2014but we think this is as critical an issue as you do, Josh. You can just hear the <em>Daddy<\/em> in the apostle Paul. I don\u2019t know if he\u2019s ever been called the <em>Daddy<\/em> before; but he sounds like one at the end of his book, Romans. In Chapter 16, verse 19, he says this\u2014now just think about a father to his son: \u201cFor your obedience is known to all so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJosh, that\u2019s the assignment of a parent\u2014\u201c\u2026wise in what is good and innocent of what is evil,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s our assignment. We\u2019re not going to able to do it perfectly\u2014this is a fallen world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tToday, more than ever, children, boys and girls, young people, young adults even need daddies and mommies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in their lives, calling them up to the standard of Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> This is where the Scripture says, \u201cGuard your eyes.\u201d You can\u2019t accomplish what Paul wrote there unless you train your children to \u201cGuard your eyes.\u201d Now, here\u2019s a problem\u2014parents say, \u201cWell I tell my kids, \u2018Just don\u2019t look at it!\u2019\u201d It\u2019s too late! You see, in your brain is norepinephrine\u2014a memory hormone\u2014that attaches memory to your brain\u2014an image seen, a feeling, a thought, a smell, whatever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith an average man\u2014pornography slides by the screen \/ in less than 20 seconds, norepinephrine is released and attached for memory. You know what it is for a child, 11 and under? Less than one second\u2014 <strong>.<\/strong>78 of a second! There are no words attached to it\u2014it\u2019s only image\u2014because they can\u2019t process the words yet. But they\u2019re finding out now, years later, those very images is what begins to haunt them and affect their behavior. So we\u2019ve got to do more than just say, \u201cJust don\u2019t look at it!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got to prepare them for the first time they see it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes Again, you ran by something there very fast that I want to make sure our listeners heard. You did a major study \/ a major survey of what\u2019s happening to today\u2019s youth\u2014a study of pornography\u2019s impact on youth\u2014and you said that 27 percent of young adults, ages 25 to 30, first viewed porn before puberty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Before they were 10, 11, 12, 13 years old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201427 percent. By comparison\u2014baby boomers, like me\u2014only 6 percent of us saw pornography before puberty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a game-changer folks. We have to do what Josh said\u2014which is not \/ not think you\u2019re going to protect them perfectly\u2014but to prepare them to know how to handle it when they see it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Equip them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the operative term here, and that\u2019s what you\u2019re pushing folks for. As a result of that, it\u2019s caused pornography to be viewed because it\u2019s accessible, it\u2019s affordable, and it fits into culture. That\u2019s how we got to where we are today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, March 28<sup>th<\/sup>. We\u2019ll spend time today with Josh McDowell, talking about how we respond to the pornography epidemic in our culture and how we raise our children to embrace moral purity. Thanks for joining us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, do you know anyone who has given 41,000 messages and has spoken 27,000 times at more than\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014125 countries and has written 145 books?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As a matter of fact I do. [Laughter] I\u2019ve got the same bio in front of me that you\u2019ve got in front of you\u2014[Laughter] \u2014so, yes, I know him!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Josh McDowell joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Josh and his wife Dottie have been married for more than 40 years. They have four grown children and\u2014count \u2018em\u2014ten grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou actually have called the nation, next week, to join you in a landmark conference addressing the subject of pornography. Why are you doing this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> One, because I have ten grandchildren I run scared for. After all my research, I have a lot of sleepless nights simply because of my grandchildren and other people\u2019s children and grandchildren. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProbably six years ago now, I started to <em>sense<\/em> something in young people\u2014in their belief system and their language, sexually. I said, \u201cThere\u2019s something <em>wrong<\/em> here.\u201d Usually, I can figure it out real fast\u2014it took me six months. I figured out what it was\u2014it\u2019s pervasive internet pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found\u2014as soon as any person, young or old, starts watching pornography, it immediately starts to erode the authorities in their life\u2014the authority of their parents, their pastor, their church\u2014but mainly the authority of the Scriptures. I just concluded, guys: \u201cSomeone\u2019s got to step forward. I have to or I can\u2019t sleep at night with a clear conscience.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That is an interesting observation\u2014I\u2019m just kind of processing it\u2014that there would be a relationship between viewing pornography and an erosion of authority. Here\u2019s kind of the conclusion I\u2019m drawing as I hear you say that: \u201cThe stimulation that comes from viewing pornography is so great in a person\u2019s brain that they will remove any authority barriers that try to keep them from that\u2014to get to it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs that it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s\u2014boy! That\u2019s a good insight! And adding to that is\u2014you have to eliminate any barriers to your intellectual\/spiritual freedom to do what you\u2019re doing\u2014to soothe your conscience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> So you start to question any authority that would say it is wrong. Then you take\u2014you know, Dennis, today\u2019s culture is: \u201cDo what is right in your own eyes. It might be true for you but not true for me.\u201d We\u2019re now seeing that, full thrust, in pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you\u2019re calling the pastors of our nation \/ the daddies of our nation\u2014men of our nation\u2014to join you in Greensboro, North Carolina, to come together for parts of four days to address this issue of pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, this is next Monday night, all day Tuesday, all day Wednesday, and half a day on Thursday. You\u2019ve got 27 speakers coming?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> I can\u2019t believe they are all coming\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014one of them\u2014Mary Anne Layden from University of Pennsylvania\u2014I said, \u201cDon\u2019t you have to look at your calendar?\u201d She said: \u201cJosh, I don\u2019t care what I have on the calendar. I will cancel it, and I will be there!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been in a ministry that has spoken to teenagers all over the world. I\u2019d just like you to summarize, Josh, the past 50 years. As you\u2019ve spoken to young people, what\u2019s happened on this subject of pornography for us to end up where we are today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>One, is the trend\u2014the shift in truth. It\u2019s gone from an objective truth in a personal Creator God to the individual: \u201cIf it\u2019s true for you, wonderful; but it\u2019s not true for me. You need to discern what is right for you \/ what is wrong for you,\u201d\u2014that has become totally mainstream in culture. So, when it comes to pornography, it\u2019s all individual. This is why hardly any Christian has a friend, who would say, \u201cPornography\u2019s wrong,\u201d because it\u2019s up to you, as an individual. That\u2019s one thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond\u2014the technology\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s gone from a magazine to video \/ now, it\u2019s gone to the internet. What the internet has done, along with the progression of breaking down of truth\u2014it has made it accessible. I mean, right now, there\u2019s two billion pages of pornography one click away! There [are] 26 <em>million<\/em> pornographic websites one click away!\u2014down at the front of your church, if you want to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Third], there\u2019s affordability. You only pay for 10 percent of pornography. All the other is free. [Fourth], there\u2019s anonymity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a result of that, it\u2019s caused pornography to be accepted to be viewed because it\u2019s accessible, it\u2019s affordable, its anonymity, and it fits into culture. That\u2019s how we got to where we are today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tProbably one of the biggest ones is\u2014the church has gotten away from a clear, biblically-based, <em>exciting<\/em> foundation of sexuality in the Scriptures and the nature of God\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the beauty of one\u2019s body \/ of sex\u2014everything. Without that, you can\u2019t determine a counterfeit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I would add\u2014I think the family has gotten away from a beautiful, magnificent, biblically-based view of human sexuality that they\u2019re teaching their kids as they grow up. I mean, the church can\u2019t do it all! Parents are the ones who\u2019ve been given children\u2014to train them in how to think about sex, how to view sexual temptation, and how to handle these issues that are coming at them today as never before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> If we do not have a family relationship in faith that our kids gravitate towards it \/ really want it\u2014I don\u2019t know how any kid\u2019s going to stand up to pornography. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I wrote the book, <em>Straight Talk with Your Kids about Sex<\/em>, I sent a video crew around to all my kids\u2019 homes because I wanted to make sure I was accurate in the stories. They asked my kids, \u201cWhen was the first time your father ever talked to you about sex?\u201d My three daughters and my son said, \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d Katie said, \u201cHe always did it\u2014at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner, on the way to church, on the way to a ballgame, way to a movie, way to home, on the way to school!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter] Well, if your child can remember the first time you talked to them, you blew it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, they asked the question, \u201cWhat was your greatest motivation to staying pure?\u201d And when I read the transcript, I cried\u2014my three daughters and my son said, \u201cBecause I\u2019ve always wanted what my father has with my mother, and it\u2019s worth waiting for.\u201d Whew! If you\u2019re child does not want <em>your<\/em> faith, <em>your<\/em> sexuality, and all\u2014you\u2019re in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I just want our listeners to pause and listen to what Josh had to say there. You have to have the real disease in order to pass it on to your kids. Unless you\u2019ve got it\u2014unless you have a love for Christ\u2014unless you respect and fear God and the Scriptures and allow it to be <em>the <\/em>authority<em> \/ the <\/em>governing body of thought to govern your desires\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>\u2014and you\u2019re living out biblical sexuality!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Song of Solomon!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in your marriage and for the kids to be able to see a healthy, loving relationship between a man and a woman\u2014that <em>is<\/em> the great apologetic for staying pure today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got to start young. The average now\u2014seeing pornography, in Christian homes and everything\u2014is eight years old. I think, in Christian homes, it\u2019s four to six years old. If, by the first time your child\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wait! Wait! Wait a second! You said, in Christian homes, it\u2019s younger\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014than the culture?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Because they put up no barriers to it\u2014they don\u2019t even think: \u201cWell, you don\u2019t talk to your kid then.\u201d \u201cYou don\u2019t ever share anything with your child then.\u201d Well they\u2019re not going to see it.\u201d Most Christian moms would say, \u201cMy kids would never seek out pornography.\u201d You miss the whole point! Pornography is seeking out your child!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI couldn\u2019t show that statistically\u2014four to six\u2014but from personal experience over the last seven years, I would have to say\u2014if somebody said, \u201cWhat is the age in Christian pastors home?\u201d Four to six years old. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI could write a book on the stories!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You also ran past something. I want you to just stop and help moms and dads understand about what\u2019s happening with today\u2019s youth. You whizzed by this, Josh\u2014you said, \u201cYour young person is growing up with peers, who think that pornography isn\u2019t a sin \/ isn\u2019t wrong\u2014that it is acceptable to look at pornography.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> In the church! Yes. Of Christian young men, 13-24 years of age, one out of 20 would say, \u201cI have a friend who would say pornography is wrong.\u201d Ninety-three percent of Christian 13-24-year-olds, in the largest study ever done, will say, \u201cWhenever I talk to my friends\u201d\u2014which most of them are Christian\u2014\u201cabout pornography, it\u2019s either being neutral, accepting, or encouraging to do it,\u201d\u201493 percent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wouldn\u2019t the biggest group there be the silent kids, who are just biting their tongue and saying, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to speak up and tell him he\u2019s wrong because moral relativism has influenced their belief structure\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Yes. And then here\u2014only several percentage points of Christian parents have ever talked to their children about pornography and the internet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How much\u2014what percent?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> It\u2019s about seven percent\u2014that\u2019s <em>sad<\/em>!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Josh, I\u2019m absorbing all this and I\u2019m going: \u2018We\u2019re living in this pornographic pervasive culture that is out to seduce our kids. We\u2019ve thought of this as being a male problem\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but, because it\u2019s so pervasive, we\u2019re now finding it\u2019s a massive problem among young ladies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>Eighteen to twenty-four-year-old Christian women\u201456 percent actively seek out porn \/ 76 percent of men\u201456 percent [of young women]. Now, women usually do it for different reasons. You can\u2019t categorize every woman and everything else, but one of the biggest reasons is women do it on how to save their marriage: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow can I save my marriage?\u201d Girls, who are exploding onto this scene, do it: \u201cHow can I keep my boyfriend?\u201d or \u201cHow can I <em>get<\/em> a boyfriend?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWomen usually seek out different types of pornography than men. Women seek out relational pornography\u2014pornography between a husband and wife \/ between two significant others\u2014something that has a relation. Men could care <em>less<\/em> about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You started off by saying the reason all of this is so troubling to you is because you have ten grandchildren. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you were able to go back today\u2014let\u2019s say you were the mom and dad of those ten grandchildren instead of being their grandpa \/ you\u2019re their mom and dad. What would you do today, raising those kids?\u2014to try to protect them as best you can \/ get them ready for what\u2019s ahead. What would you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> What I did with my four children, before all of this really hit\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014one, you must acknowledge it as a problem. Most Christian parents don\u2019t. They don\u2019t see the devastation \/ how large it is! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know how big pornography is? There are 26 million websites. Just one\u2014not even the biggest\u2014in the last 30 days, produced 29 petabytes of transferred data pornography. If you printed that out\u2014just one site of 26 million\u2014in 30 days \/ would fill 540 MILLION four-drawer file cabinets! It is so big\u2014your kids <em>will<\/em> see it. So, one\u2014you\u2019ve got to acknowledge it\u2019s a problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And let me just stop you there, Josh. When you say you\u2019re going to talk to your kids\u2014that they are going to see it. Do we need to watch our attitude about this?\u2014making it extremely shameful? I mean, how do we hold the barrier up\u2014of it being wrong or against what God wants\u2014without somehow turning our kids against our Christianity \/ our walk with Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> First, you need to develop such a loving, intimate, close family relationship that your child feels <em>totally<\/em> free to ask mommy or daddy anything\u2014and I mean ANYTHING\u2014without shame, without judgment, without starting to quote the Bible \/ which most Christian men do\u2014you do that later!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, if a five-year-old comes and says, \u201cMommy, what is\u2026\u201d and then puts in anything\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. Without being self-conscience \/ without shunning away a little bit because they read your body language faster than your lips.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> You listen to them. You don\u2019t judge them, \u201cWell, you shouldn\u2019t be doing that!\u201d No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t say, first thing, \u201cWhere\u2019d you hear that?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You don\u2019t say that first?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, what do you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> You listen to them\u2014say, \u201cWell, tell me about it, honey.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cWhat have you heard?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> So you\u2019re without judgment, without shame, without starting to quote the Scripture, and without humor\u2014\u201cOh, you\u2019re too young for that!\u201d If they\u2019re old enough for the question, they\u2019re old enough for the answer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> So you\u2019ve got to develop that family, where they\u2019re totally free. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, you need to create, within that child, a concept\u2014and I mean early \/ I think by five years old\u2014should, to a certain degree, have added in God\u2019s concept of sexuality: \u201cWhat is sex? Who created sex? How beautiful your body is,\u201d and all\u2014and how God\u2019s design is something WONDERFUL!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou say, \u201cWhy is that so important?\u201d For this reason\u2014your child <em>will<\/em> see pornography\u2014and [while] young! Here\u2019s the key\u2014I really believe\u2014if your child sees pornography and they don\u2019t have, built in, a certain type of original, they cannot detect a counterfeit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to build into my three daughters and my son an original concept. They had to see it in my life with their mother. Those are two of the biggest things you can do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What I\u2019m hearing you say, right there, is that giving your kids a picture of what sexual purity looks like \/ the benefits of that: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow good it can be when you wait until marriage, and a covenant has been established, and the safety of a marriage relationship is in place. That\u2019s when a young man and a young lady can truly experience what God designed.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. That\u2019s why, when I was in your office\u2014if you remember, I looked down and I saw <em>Passport to Identity<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>, <em>Passport to Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, etc.\u2014and I said, \u201cDennis\u2014<em>that<\/em> is the beginning of the answer to pornography! We have <em>got<\/em> to build, within our children, healthy, positive biblical teachings about their body, about sexuality, about who they are, their identity\u2014who God is \/ the relationship. If we don\u2019t do that, young, then I don\u2019t care what you teach your children. That\u2019s why, when I saw this today, I thought: \u201cWow! I\u2019m going to promote that at the <em>Set Free<\/em> <em>Summit <\/em>because it\u2019s a positive answer!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You got a sneak preview because <em>Passport to Identity<\/em> is brand-new. In fact, our listeners have just started hearing about it. In the next couple weeks, we\u2019re going to be giving them a full explanation of what this resource is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the reason you\u2019re excited about things like <em>Passport to Identity <\/em>and <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> is because we set up moms and dads to have the kinds of conversations moms and dads need to be having with their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. A parent is derelict if they don\u2019t have positive interaction with their children, right down to the nitty-gritty of sex\u2014and I mean early.So many parents say to me: \u201cI don\u2019t want my kids to hear it. I want to guard their purity.\u201d I said: \u201cOh my gosh! It\u2019s <em>knowledge<\/em>, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in a loving intimate relationship, especially with Daddy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> For years, we have pointed folks to books by\u2014you know Stanton Jones, who works at Wheaton; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Oh, of course!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So he and his wife Brenna have put together these age-related books, where you can teach your kids about sex. We\u2019ve shared those with parents for years. There\u2019s one for preschoolers, one for elementary school\u2014they\u2019re kind of graded as they go up. Those can be catalytic to having the kinds of conversations you\u2019re talking about as well; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Oh, you have to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI say to dads, \u201cListen to the mom.\u201d Mom usually has a little more insight. Her intuition is better than a man\u2019s facts. I said, \u201cKnow your child\u2014just how far you go. You don\u2019t want to create unhealthy images\u2014but boy! You\u2019ve got to go to the line today,\u201d\u2014even with books like you just described. Bob, the internet is changing it all. The internet\u2014it breaks my heart\u2014is taking it younger, and younger, and younger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow you think of this\u2014these are Christian young men, 18 to 24-year-old \/ 76 percent <em>actively<\/em>\/<em> regularly<\/em> seek out pornography\u2014for 39-60-year-olds \/ it\u2019s 47 percent\u201425 to 39-year-old \/ is 65 percent\u201418 to 24 \/ 76 [percent]. Do you see the progression?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes\u2014it\u2019s getting bigger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh: <\/strong>The younger, the bigger. It\u2019s a <em>total<\/em> shift in culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Let me step in here and just let our listeners know the things we\u2019ve talked about\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> resource \/ the books by Stan and Brenna Jones\u2014these are things we\u2019ve got in our <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>Resource Center<em>. <\/em>Our listeners can come and get more information about how they can get the resources. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got a link on our website, Josh, to the event that you\u2019re doing next week in Greensboro. I wish every camp director in America could be there because 50 percent of even your children camps watch pornography. Usually, when it becomes known in the camp, they handle it totally wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I\u2019d say we need to have daddies there. I\u2019d say we need to have mommies there. Single moms \/ single dads ought to come to this because it\u2019s not a matter of <em>if<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s a matter of <em>what<\/em> your kids are going to see. It\u2019s a matter of how they\u2019re prepared to handle this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I know a lot of people are going to have to clear out their schedule to be able to do it\u2014take a couple of days off from work\u2014but we think this is as critical an issue as you do, Josh. You can just hear the <em>Daddy<\/em> in the apostle Paul. I don\u2019t know if he\u2019s ever been called the <em>Daddy<\/em> before; but he sounds like one at the end of his book, Romans. In Chapter 16, verse 19, he says this\u2014now just think about a father to his son: \u201cFor your obedience is known to all so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJosh, that\u2019s the assignment of a parent\u2014\u201c\u2026wise in what is good and innocent of what is evil,\u201d\u2014it\u2019s our assignment. We\u2019re not going to able to do it perfectly\u2014this is a fallen world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tToday, more than ever, children, boys and girls, young people, young adults even need daddies and mommies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in their lives, calling them up to the standard of Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> This is where the Scripture says, \u201cGuard your eyes.\u201d You can\u2019t accomplish what Paul wrote there unless you train your children to \u201cGuard your eyes.\u201d Now, here\u2019s a problem\u2014parents say, \u201cWell I tell my kids, \u2018Just don\u2019t look at it!\u2019\u201d It\u2019s too late! You see, in your brain is norepinephrine\u2014a memory hormone\u2014that attaches memory to your brain\u2014an image seen, a feeling, a thought, a smell, whatever. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith an average man\u2014pornography slides by the screen \/ in less than 20 seconds, norepinephrine is released and attached for memory. You know what it is for a child, 11 and under? Less than one second\u2014 <strong>.<\/strong>78 of a second! There are no words attached to it\u2014it\u2019s only image\u2014because they can\u2019t process the words yet. But they\u2019re finding out now, years later, those very images is what begins to haunt them and affect their behavior. So we\u2019ve got to do more than just say, \u201cJust don\u2019t look at it!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got to prepare them for the first time they see it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes Again, you ran by something there very fast that I want to make sure our listeners heard. You did a major study \/ a major survey of what\u2019s happening to today\u2019s youth\u2014a study of pornography\u2019s impact on youth\u2014and you said that 27 percent of young adults, ages 25 to 30, first viewed porn before puberty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Before they were 10, 11, 12, 13 years old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Josh:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u201427 percent. By comparison\u2014baby boomers, like me\u2014only 6 percent of us saw pornography before puberty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a game-changer folks. We have to do what Josh said\u2014which is not \/ not think you\u2019re going to protect them perfectly\u2014but to prepare them to know how to handle it when they see it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Equip them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the operative term here, and that\u2019s what you\u2019re pushing folks for.
