You know what success looks for?\u2014more success. And you taste success\u2014it is a drug. You will think: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I want more of that.\u201d\u00a0 If success has captured your awe, your family will suffer, your spiritual life will suffer, your schedule will be undoable, and the people that work for you will think, \u201cI don\u2019t want to work for this person anymore.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, March 22<sup>nd<\/sup>. The question is: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre we looking for awe in the wrong places?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk more about that today. Mary Ann and I were with some friends\u2014this was, I don\u2019t know, several months ago. First time ever\u2014we drove into Central California and found ourselves on the floor of the valley in Yosemite with <em>El Capitan <\/em>off to the right and with\u2014it was springtime; so, the falls were running. We got to go up to Yosemite Falls and got to go up to and look from the top down into the valley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t go there without wanting, at some point in your trip, to all break out and sing: \u201cOh, Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made. How great Thou art\u2026.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is\u2014well, I\u2019m going to use the word because we\u2019re talking about it this week. It is <em>awesome<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is awesome. I am just thinking of having seen that view myself, and it\u2019s a valley. Think of that valley as God\u2019s little pinky finger print. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not His handprint\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014but a little pinky imprint. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Or think of it as His second-grade art project. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just wonder what God was doing in eternity the day He decided to create Yosemite Valley. I mean,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014or the Grand Canyon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014He showed up and showed off. That\u2019s just all there is to it. And we\u2019ve got a guest today on the broadcast. Paul David Tripp joins us again and believes like us as well. Paul, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>It\u2019s good to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He has written a book called <em>Awe<\/em>. Paul has written a number of books. He is a pastor. He is a conference speaker, both here in America and internationally. <br><br>And Paul, I want to talk about how this awe of God can impact our parenting\u2014how we can do a better job\u2014as moms and dads and grandparents\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014by walking in the midst of the awe of God. I want us to talk about work, and I want us to talk about our emotions today. So, you\u2019ve got just a little bit of work laid out for you here\u2014that I\u2019d like you to hit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, I\u2019d like you to give the concept of why the awe of God ought to be more important to us on a daily basis. Then, let\u2019s talk to the parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, yes. You have to understand that you were created, designed by God, for awe. You\u2019re an awe-seeking human being. The awe of <em>something<\/em> will always capture your heart, and what captures your heart will control the way you live your life. Every human being is in search of wonder. Every human being has a heart that longs to be satisfied, to have something <em>so<\/em> big, <em>so<\/em> great, and <em>so<\/em> wonderful that they say: \u201cThat\u2019s it!\u00a0 That\u2019s what I want to give myself to.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re all searching for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why a boxer, who is way beyond his years, will get back into the ring\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because there is something he wants that he hasn\u2019t found yet. We\u2019re all thinking: \u201cNo, no, no. Don\u2019t do another fight!\u201d\u2014can\u2019t stop him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s why people will drive or fly thousands of miles to go to Yosemite National Park and look at a waterfall. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re <em>hungry<\/em> for that; and somebody has said, \u201cIf you see this, it will scratch the awe- itch in your soul.\u201d\u00a0 Why is it that the spectacular beauty of creation does inspire awe in us?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, because God designed it that way. God <em>meant<\/em> for this world to be an awesome place. He gave you eyes, He gave you ears, He gave you a mind that can think through it, He gave you a heart that responds to it. All of that is <em>meant<\/em> to drive you to Him\u2014that the creation \/ awe of creation would stimulate awe of God. That\u2019s how God designed it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s trying to wean us away from thinking we\u2019re the center of the universe and reminding us of the truth that <em>He<\/em> is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is the Almighty God. He was, He is, and will be forever and ever. He is the original creator of us, and we tend to forget that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, let me give you an illustration of what happens. It\u2019s like me telling my family that we\u2019re going to go to Disney World. I take them to the website. I show them all the glories that are at Disney, and they are just all cranked, \u201cWe\u2019re going to go to Disney World!\u201d\u00a0 We start on the long drive. We get to that first sign in Florida that says, \u201cDisney World 120 miles\u201d; and I stop there. I unpack the car and I say, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have our vacation.\u201d\u00a0 You would say, \u201cThat is an insane man, and he and his family will never be satisfied.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to human life!\u00a0 That\u2019s what the vast majority of human beings, living on earth, are doing. The sign is not the thing\u2014the sign points to the thing. Creation is not the thing. Creation is a sign that points us to the thing that is glorious and will satisfy us, and we stop at creation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe might as well be at that Disney World sign because you\u2019re never going to be satisfied there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; I think you\u2019ve kind of taken us to the center point here in understanding what awe is. Now, let\u2019s apply it to being a parent. You think that in order to be the kind of parent God created you to be, you have to be an awe-filled\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not <em>aw<\/em>ful but awe-filled parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>So, there\u2019s two parts to this conversation. First is that if, as a parent, you\u2019re not living in awe of God, then, as a parent, you\u2019re living in awe of yourself. You personalize things that are not personal. You turn moments of ministry into moments of anger. You\u2019re adversarial in responses, and you\u2019ll settle for quick situational solutions that don\u2019t get to the heart of the matter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And can I add one more?\u00a0 You\u2019ll compare what you\u2019re doing with what other parents are doing. You\u2019ll become self-centered in that and want your kids to bring you value and esteem by doing everything right. So, you\u2019ll put all kinds of pressure on your kids at the time too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Think about the irrationality of that. I say to my kids: \u201cI can\u2019t believe you would do this to me!\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe it!\u201d\u2014as if my children woke up that morning and they conspired together: \u201cAt 7:35,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, some\u2014sometimes, they did, Paul! Sometimes, our kids\u2014they met together. [Laughter]\u00a0 It was\u2014[Laughter] \u2014it could not have happened by accident!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Now, you\u2019re scaring me. [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, it is craziness; but I want to talk about the other side of this. I believe, sadly, that most Christian parents think the problem their children have is a law problem\u2014that\u2019s all the deeper that they get. So, if your children have a law problem, you set up a neat set of rules with a really good set of enforcement. Your relationship with your children is law-giver, judge-and-jury, and jailer. Now, the immediate thing you can say about that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sounds kind of good as a parent sometimes; doesn\u2019t it? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>If the law could change your children, if the law could rescue your children, if the law could make your children what God meant them to be, Jesus would never had to come!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>So, the gospel we believe says, \u201cThat\u2019s not the way to think about parenting.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>What you need to understand is that your children have an awe problem that produces a law problem. Let me be specific. There are two lies that every child coming into the world believes. The first lie is the lie of autonomy. What autonomy says is: \u201cI\u2019m an independent human being. I have the right to live my life the way I want to.\u201d\u00a0 Listen, those fights with a three-year-old over what to eat are not about diet. This child has thought nothing about diet\u2014it\u2019s about autonomy: \u201cYou will not tell me what to put in my mouth. Try it!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, my daughter had a hydraulic vice for a mouth. She would clinch her teeth, and the Jaws of Life couldn\u2019t open her mouth\u2014[Laughter] \u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, that\u2019s autonomy!\u00a0 Or <em>fighting<\/em> to not go to bed\u2014that\u2019s not about my philosophical views on sleep\u2014I\u2019m fighting for my autonomy. That\u2019s the first lie because, if you\u2019re created by God, you immediately belong to the One who created you. So, autonomy doesn\u2019t exist. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second lie is the lie of self-sufficiency. That lie says: \u201cI have everything inside of myself to be what I\u2019m supposed to be and to do what I\u2019m supposed to do. I don\u2019t need your help. Thank you.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll see that with little Johnny who, now, has realized that his shoes have laces. He\u2019s fumbling trying to make a bow. He could fumble for a century, and he wouldn\u2019t make a bow; but you reach down to help him, and he slaps away your hand because he wants to hold onto that\u2014that\u2019s self-sufficiency. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do those lies say?\u00a0 They say: \u201cI have power that I don\u2019t have. I have independence that I don\u2019t have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLife is about <em>me<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Every child, who has ever been born, is born as a little self-sovereign: \u201cI\u2019m the lord almighty. Thank you. Don\u2019t get in my way.\u201d Well, that produces just a whole catalogue of iniquity\u2014no wonder I\u2019m disrespectful, no wonder I fight you, no wonder I mistreat my siblings, no wonder I envy, no wonder I steal, no wonder I do acts of violence\u2014it just all makes sense!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I have to do is begin to open that conversation with my children\u2014how about, in a moment of anger, not just saying, \u201cHow dare you do that to your sister!\u201d\u2014how about saying, \u201cWhy are you so angry right now?\u00a0 What is it about?\u201d\u00a0 And will your child say: \u201cOh, I get it!\u00a0 I\u2019m an awe-less human being. Won\u2019t you take me to God?\u201d\u2014of course, not! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut parenting is having that conversation ten thousand times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And every time, the Spirit of God is nurturing the heart of that child. At some point, the child begins to get it: \u201cI am my biggest problem. It\u2019s me.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is what wore me out\u2014and Barbara as well\u2014as parents. It\u2019s called the rabbinical method of teaching\u2014over, and over, and over again\u2014but it is the assignment of a parent; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have to struggle with your own self-centeredness, while at the same time, training your son and daughter to know what to do with theirs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I\u2019m doing two things: I\u2019m presenting, every day, to my children a God of awesome, stunning glory. I want to look for ways of showing them His glory because I understand my children have the perverse ability to look at creation and not see God. So, I want to point them to God\u2019s glory. Alongside of that, I\u2019m pointing them to awe gone wrong\u2014the evidence of that in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019m doing is\u2014I\u2019m trying to fight the battle of the cross with my children: \u201cWhat did Jesus come for? So those who live would no longer live for themselves. Jesus came to give you back your awe of God again because there is no safer place to live than when you live in awe of God.\u201d I want to be part of the agenda of Jesus in the lives of my children\u2014I want my children to get the awe back again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What a privilege to do that!\u00a0 Psalm 78 really contains what you\u2019re talking about. It tells us to do two things. First of all, teach your children the truth about God, which results in the truth about yourself. Secondly, teach your children and share with your children your experience of God of how you\u2019ve seen Him show up. It\u2019s called the mighty works of God. Some of that is pointing out <em>El Capitan<\/em> at Yosemite Valley and showing off where God put His little pinky to create that valley. Others are talking about how He invaded your life during the day\u2014how He gave you an opportunity to help someone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your assignment, as a parent, is to introduce your child to God in the Bible, but also, to introduce Him to your children through your own experience of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. And Psalm 145 says, \u201cOne generation shall commend your works to another.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s parenting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s a parenting passage\u2014that\u2019s what I\u2019m <em>meant<\/em> to do. It\u2019s not enough to set up rules and regulations because that heart of that child is searching for awe \/ they are <em>searching<\/em> for glory. They don\u2019t know it, but they are. And so, the love of a little girl, the accomplishment in athletics, the want for possessions\u2014all of those <em>things<\/em> are the searching heart of that child. Look at that infant and understand <em>something<\/em> will capture the awe of that baby\u2019s heart. What captures awe will control his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We still address and correct behavior when they\u2019re acting wrongly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t ignore the fact that they\u2019ve misbehaved; do we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>But you root it in this thing that we\u2019re talking about. Every moment of transgression is an opportunity to talk about awe because, again, it\u2019s an awe problem \/ not a law problem. Think of the Ten Commandments\u2014where do they begin?\u00a0 They begin with the awe of God because, if you\u2019re not living in that, you won\u2019t keep any of the rest of the commands\u2014it\u2019s the very way the commands are set up. <br><br>I understand, when I walk in that room, now\u2014to talk about the wrong the child has done\u2014I have an opportunity to talk about this big <em>thing<\/em> that is going to capture this child\u2019s heart. I want to say this: \u201cWhat we\u2019re talking about is grace. Grace never calls wrong right because, if wrong were right, there\u2019d be no need for grace. Grace is a way of dealing with wrong.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not just going to be a punishment and \u201cDon\u2019t you dare ever do this again!\u201d\u2014it\u2019s an opportunity for me to say, \u201cI get your struggle because I\u2019m like you.\u201d\u00a0 We have a conversation. Every moment of those conversations, the Spirit of God is working in the heart of that child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re talking with Paul David Tripp about the subject of awe on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. And you\u2019d mentioned that you wanted to talk about it in the workplace as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do, but there are some parents who want the book right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014because they don\u2019t have that kind of awe. They\u2019re going, \u201cI need to be mentored myself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com. One is work, and the other is our emotional life. Let\u2019s, first of all, talk about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve got about seven minutes to take care of both of those for us here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk to us about making our work take place in the midst of having an awe for God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s start with the negative. My work was never meant to be the center of my identity. My work is not meant to be the place where I find satisfaction. Work is a way that God normally provides for me. It\u2019s a way that God gives me an ability to express the natural gifts He\u2019s given me. It\u2019s a way to reflect the truth of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it\u2019s a way to live for the glory of God. It\u2019s not meant to be the thing that grips me, and I look to it for identity and satisfaction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it is, then, it\u2019s hard for me to say, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s hard for me not to work four more hours, and to be in ridiculous, unhealthy competition with other workers, and to let go of some of my moral standards because it\u2019s hard to hang on to those and advance in the company I am in, or it\u2019s hard for me not to be that horrible boss that just demands, demands, demands, demands, demands and is never satisfied because I have fallen into believing that success will satisfy me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomebody needs to say\u2014because we have a culture that is crazy in this area: \u201cSuccess will <em>never<\/em> satisfy you. It\u2019ll <em>never<\/em> satisfy you.\u201d\u00a0 You know what success looks for?\u2014more success. You taste success\u2014it is a drug. You will think: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I want more of that.\u201d If success has captured your awe, your family will suffer, your spiritual life will suffer, your schedule will be undoable, and the people that work for you will think, \u201cI don\u2019t want to work for this person anymore.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You are describing a workaholic. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you would say what he is doing is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014he is getting or he\u2019s trying to get from work what God has said, \u201cYou\u2019ll only find in Me.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>See, work is noble, work is a wonderful thing, work is a gift from God\u2014it\u2019s a beautiful thing. When I go through a big city, and I see these magnificent buildings, I think, \u201cHow could it be that God would give gifts to people like this?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it just blows my mind. That\u2019s a wonderful, beautiful thing that reflects the Creator; but it can\u2019t be the thing that you are living for. You can\u2019t turn work into your own personal savior because it will <em>never<\/em> satisfy you in the way that you want it to satisfy you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat protects me is\u2014when I go to work with a heart that is already full, I don\u2019t need work to do that for me. Work, now, is in its rightful place. So, I can say, \u201cNo; I\u2019ve got four children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m not going to take on another project.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m free to do that because I\u2019m not asking work to be for me what it can\u2019t be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; as you were talking, I thought, \u201cSo, what is the right place of work?\u201d\u00a0 I think another Paul\u2014the Apostle Paul\u2014put it quite well in Colossians, Chapter 3. He said, \u201cWhatever you do, work heartily\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 So, you\u2019re not talking about not working hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it says, \u201c\u2026work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.\u201d\u00a0 What is unclear about that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Boy, that is\u2014it\u2019s just right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have to have an awe of God as you work so you do your best and not lose sight of the fact that: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 He sees, He knows, He appreciates all the effort you took\u2014whether you are at the top of the heap at your workplace or whether you\u2019re somewhere near the bottom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t matter. The assignment from God is what matters.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>There are thousands and thousands of Christian men\u2014when they come home at night, if they could be honest, what they really want is to be left alone because where they are getting their identity, their meaning, where they are feeding spiritually is their work. Their home exists outside of that. When they punch out from work, they punch out from life. That\u2019s not just a lack of love problem\u2014that\u2019s an awe problem. That sets up a lack of love with my family because work is in a place it was never meant to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking, Dennis, about the subject of how awe affects our emotions. Honestly, we don\u2019t have time\u2014in the time we\u2019ve got left\u2014to unpack that. But here\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do\u2014we\u2019re going to continue the conversation. Mary Ann and I were with some friends\u2014this was, I don\u2019t know, several months ago. First time ever\u2014we drove into Central California and found ourselves on the floor of the valley in Yosemite with <em>El Capitan <\/em>off to the right and with\u2014it was springtime; so, the falls were running. We got to go up to Yosemite Falls and got to go up to and look from the top down into the valley. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t go there without wanting, at some point in your trip, to all break out and sing: \u201cOh, Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made. How great Thou art\u2026.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is\u2014well, I\u2019m going to use the word because we\u2019re talking about it this week. It is <em>awesome<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It is awesome. I am just thinking of having seen that view myself, and it\u2019s a valley. Think of that valley as God\u2019s little pinky finger print. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Not His handprint\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014but a little pinky imprint. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Or think of it as His second-grade art project. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I just wonder what God was doing in eternity the day He decided to create Yosemite Valley. I mean,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014or the Grand Canyon. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014He showed up and showed off. That\u2019s just all there is to it. And we\u2019ve got a guest today on the broadcast. Paul David Tripp joins us again and believes like us as well. Paul, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>It\u2019s good to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He has written a book called <em>Awe<\/em>. Paul has written a number of books. He is a pastor. He is a conference speaker, both here in America and internationally. <br><br>And Paul, I want to talk about how this awe of God can impact our parenting\u2014how we can do a better job\u2014as moms and dads and grandparents\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014by walking in the midst of the awe of God. I want us to talk about work, and I want us to talk about our emotions today. So, you\u2019ve got just a little bit of work laid out for you here\u2014that I\u2019d like you to hit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, I\u2019d like you to give the concept of why the awe of God ought to be more important to us on a daily basis. Then, let\u2019s talk to the parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, yes. You have to understand that you were created, designed by God, for awe. You\u2019re an awe-seeking human being. The awe of <em>something<\/em> will always capture your heart, and what captures your heart will control the way you live your life. Every human being is in search of wonder. Every human being has a heart that longs to be satisfied, to have something <em>so<\/em> big, <em>so<\/em> great, and <em>so<\/em> wonderful that they say: \u201cThat\u2019s it!\u00a0 That\u2019s what I want to give myself to.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re all searching for that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why a boxer, who is way beyond his years, will get back into the ring\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014because there is something he wants that he hasn\u2019t found yet. We\u2019re all thinking: \u201cNo, no, no. Don\u2019t do another fight!\u201d\u2014can\u2019t stop him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, it\u2019s why people will drive or fly thousands of miles to go to Yosemite National Park and look at a waterfall. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re <em>hungry<\/em> for that; and somebody has said, \u201cIf you see this, it will scratch the awe- itch in your soul.\u201d\u00a0 Why is it that the spectacular beauty of creation does inspire awe in us?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, because God designed it that way. God <em>meant<\/em> for this world to be an awesome place. He gave you eyes, He gave you ears, He gave you a mind that can think through it, He gave you a heart that responds to it. All of that is <em>meant<\/em> to drive you to Him\u2014that the creation \/ awe of creation would stimulate awe of God. That\u2019s how God designed it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>He\u2019s trying to wean us away from thinking we\u2019re the center of the universe and reminding us of the truth that <em>He<\/em> is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is the Almighty God. He was, He is, and will be forever and ever. He is the original creator of us, and we tend to forget that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, let me give you an illustration of what happens. It\u2019s like me telling my family that we\u2019re going to go to Disney World. I take them to the website. I show them all the glories that are at Disney, and they are just all cranked, \u201cWe\u2019re going to go to Disney World!\u201d\u00a0 We start on the long drive. We get to that first sign in Florida that says, \u201cDisney World 120 miles\u201d; and I stop there. I unpack the car and I say, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have our vacation.\u201d\u00a0 You would say, \u201cThat is an insane man, and he and his family will never be satisfied.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to human life!\u00a0 That\u2019s what the vast majority of human beings, living on earth, are doing. The sign is not the thing\u2014the sign points to the thing. Creation is not the thing. Creation is a sign that points us to the thing that is glorious and will satisfy us, and we stop at creation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe might as well be at that Disney World sign because you\u2019re never going to be satisfied there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Okay; I think you\u2019ve kind of taken us to the center point here in understanding what awe is. Now, let\u2019s apply it to being a parent. You think that in order to be the kind of parent God created you to be, you have to be an awe-filled\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Not <em>aw<\/em>ful but awe-filled parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>So, there\u2019s two parts to this conversation. First is that if, as a parent, you\u2019re not living in awe of God, then, as a parent, you\u2019re living in awe of yourself. You personalize things that are not personal. You turn moments of ministry into moments of anger. You\u2019re adversarial in responses, and you\u2019ll settle for quick situational solutions that don\u2019t get to the heart of the matter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And can I add one more?\u00a0 You\u2019ll compare what you\u2019re doing with what other parents are doing. You\u2019ll become self-centered in that and want your kids to bring you value and esteem by doing everything right. So, you\u2019ll put all kinds of pressure on your kids at the time too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Think about the irrationality of that. I say to my kids: \u201cI can\u2019t believe you would do this to me!\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe it!\u201d\u2014as if my children woke up that morning and they conspired together: \u201cAt 7:35,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, some\u2014sometimes, they did, Paul! Sometimes, our kids\u2014they met together. [Laughter]\u00a0 It was\u2014[Laughter] \u2014it could not have happened by accident!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Now, you\u2019re scaring me. [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, it is craziness; but I want to talk about the other side of this. I believe, sadly, that most Christian parents think the problem their children have is a law problem\u2014that\u2019s all the deeper that they get. So, if your children have a law problem, you set up a neat set of rules with a really good set of enforcement. Your relationship with your children is law-giver, judge-and-jury, and jailer. Now, the immediate thing you can say about that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Sounds kind of good as a parent sometimes; doesn\u2019t it? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>If the law could change your children, if the law could rescue your children, if the law could make your children what God meant them to be, Jesus would never had to come!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>So, the gospel we believe says, \u201cThat\u2019s not the way to think about parenting.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>What you need to understand is that your children have an awe problem that produces a law problem. Let me be specific. There are two lies that every child coming into the world believes. The first lie is the lie of autonomy. What autonomy says is: \u201cI\u2019m an independent human being. I have the right to live my life the way I want to.\u201d\u00a0 Listen, those fights with a three-year-old over what to eat are not about diet. This child has thought nothing about diet\u2014it\u2019s about autonomy: \u201cYou will not tell me what to put in my mouth. Try it!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, my daughter had a hydraulic vice for a mouth. She would clinch her teeth, and the Jaws of Life couldn\u2019t open her mouth\u2014[Laughter] \u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I mean, that\u2019s autonomy!\u00a0 Or <em>fighting<\/em> to not go to bed\u2014that\u2019s not about my philosophical views on sleep\u2014I\u2019m fighting for my autonomy. That\u2019s the first lie because, if you\u2019re created by God, you immediately belong to the One who created you. So, autonomy doesn\u2019t exist. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second lie is the lie of self-sufficiency. That lie says: \u201cI have everything inside of myself to be what I\u2019m supposed to be and to do what I\u2019m supposed to do. I don\u2019t need your help. Thank you.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll see that with little Johnny who, now, has realized that his shoes have laces. He\u2019s fumbling trying to make a bow. He could fumble for a century, and he wouldn\u2019t make a bow; but you reach down to help him, and he slaps away your hand because he wants to hold onto that\u2014that\u2019s self-sufficiency. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat do those lies say?\u00a0 They say: \u201cI have power that I don\u2019t have. I have independence that I don\u2019t have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cLife is about <em>me<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Every child, who has ever been born, is born as a little self-sovereign: \u201cI\u2019m the lord almighty. Thank you. Don\u2019t get in my way.\u201d Well, that produces just a whole catalogue of iniquity\u2014no wonder I\u2019m disrespectful, no wonder I fight you, no wonder I mistreat my siblings, no wonder I envy, no wonder I steal, no wonder I do acts of violence\u2014it just all makes sense!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I have to do is begin to open that conversation with my children\u2014how about, in a moment of anger, not just saying, \u201cHow dare you do that to your sister!\u201d\u2014how about saying, \u201cWhy are you so angry right now?\u00a0 What is it about?\u201d\u00a0 And will your child say: \u201cOh, I get it!\u00a0 I\u2019m an awe-less human being. Won\u2019t you take me to God?\u201d\u2014of course, not! [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut parenting is having that conversation ten thousand times. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And every time, the Spirit of God is nurturing the heart of that child. At some point, the child begins to get it: \u201cI am my biggest problem. It\u2019s me.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is what wore me out\u2014and Barbara as well\u2014as parents. It\u2019s called the rabbinical method of teaching\u2014over, and over, and over again\u2014but it is the assignment of a parent; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have to struggle with your own self-centeredness, while at the same time, training your son and daughter to know what to do with theirs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I\u2019m doing two things: I\u2019m presenting, every day, to my children a God of awesome, stunning glory. I want to look for ways of showing them His glory because I understand my children have the perverse ability to look at creation and not see God. So, I want to point them to God\u2019s glory. Alongside of that, I\u2019m pointing them to awe gone wrong\u2014the evidence of that in their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019m doing is\u2014I\u2019m trying to fight the battle of the cross with my children: \u201cWhat did Jesus come for? So those who live would no longer live for themselves. Jesus came to give you back your awe of God again because there is no safer place to live than when you live in awe of God.\u201d I want to be part of the agenda of Jesus in the lives of my children\u2014I want my children to get the awe back again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>What a privilege to do that!\u00a0 Psalm 78 really contains what you\u2019re talking about. It tells us to do two things. First of all, teach your children the truth about God, which results in the truth about yourself. Secondly, teach your children and share with your children your experience of God of how you\u2019ve seen Him show up. It\u2019s called the mighty works of God. Some of that is pointing out <em>El Capitan<\/em> at Yosemite Valley and showing off where God put His little pinky to create that valley. Others are talking about how He invaded your life during the day\u2014how He gave you an opportunity to help someone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Your assignment, as a parent, is to introduce your child to God in the Bible, but also, to introduce Him to your children through your own experience of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. And Psalm 145 says, \u201cOne generation shall commend your works to another.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s parenting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>That\u2019s a parenting passage\u2014that\u2019s what I\u2019m <em>meant<\/em> to do. It\u2019s not enough to set up rules and regulations because that heart of that child is searching for awe \/ they are <em>searching<\/em> for glory. They don\u2019t know it, but they are. And so, the love of a little girl, the accomplishment in athletics, the want for possessions\u2014all of those <em>things<\/em> are the searching heart of that child. Look at that infant and understand <em>something<\/em> will capture the awe of that baby\u2019s heart. What captures awe will control his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We still address and correct behavior when they\u2019re acting wrongly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t ignore the fact that they\u2019ve misbehaved; do we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>But you root it in this thing that we\u2019re talking about. Every moment of transgression is an opportunity to talk about awe because, again, it\u2019s an awe problem \/ not a law problem. Think of the Ten Commandments\u2014where do they begin?\u00a0 They begin with the awe of God because, if you\u2019re not living in that, you won\u2019t keep any of the rest of the commands\u2014it\u2019s the very way the commands are set up. <br><br>I understand, when I walk in that room, now\u2014to talk about the wrong the child has done\u2014I have an opportunity to talk about this big <em>thing<\/em> that is going to capture this child\u2019s heart. I want to say this: \u201cWhat we\u2019re talking about is grace. Grace never calls wrong right because, if wrong were right, there\u2019d be no need for grace. Grace is a way of dealing with wrong.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not just going to be a punishment and \u201cDon\u2019t you dare ever do this again!\u201d\u2014it\u2019s an opportunity for me to say, \u201cI get your struggle because I\u2019m like you.\u201d\u00a0 We have a conversation. Every moment of those conversations, the Spirit of God is working in the heart of that child. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We\u2019re talking with Paul David Tripp about the subject of awe on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. And you\u2019d mentioned that you wanted to talk about it in the workplace as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do, but there are some parents who want the book right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014because they don\u2019t have that kind of awe. They\u2019re going, \u201cI need to be mentored myself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com. One is work, and the other is our emotional life. Let\u2019s, first of all, talk about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you\u2019ve got about seven minutes to take care of both of those for us here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk to us about making our work take place in the midst of having an awe for God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, let\u2019s start with the negative. My work was never meant to be the center of my identity. My work is not meant to be the place where I find satisfaction. Work is a way that God normally provides for me. It\u2019s a way that God gives me an ability to express the natural gifts He\u2019s given me. It\u2019s a way to reflect the truth of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it\u2019s a way to live for the glory of God. It\u2019s not meant to be the thing that grips me, and I look to it for identity and satisfaction. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it is, then, it\u2019s hard for me to say, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s hard for me not to work four more hours, and to be in ridiculous, unhealthy competition with other workers, and to let go of some of my moral standards because it\u2019s hard to hang on to those and advance in the company I am in, or it\u2019s hard for me not to be that horrible boss that just demands, demands, demands, demands, demands and is never satisfied because I have fallen into believing that success will satisfy me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomebody needs to say\u2014because we have a culture that is crazy in this area: \u201cSuccess will <em>never<\/em> satisfy you. It\u2019ll <em>never<\/em> satisfy you.\u201d\u00a0 You know what success looks for?\u2014more success. You taste success\u2014it is a drug. You will think: \u201cWow!\u00a0 I want more of that.\u201d If success has captured your awe, your family will suffer, your spiritual life will suffer, your schedule will be undoable, and the people that work for you will think, \u201cI don\u2019t want to work for this person anymore.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>You are describing a workaholic. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And you would say what he is doing is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014he is getting or he\u2019s trying to get from work what God has said, \u201cYou\u2019ll only find in Me.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>See, work is noble, work is a wonderful thing, work is a gift from God\u2014it\u2019s a beautiful thing. When I go through a big city, and I see these magnificent buildings, I think, \u201cHow could it be that God would give gifts to people like this?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it just blows my mind. That\u2019s a wonderful, beautiful thing that reflects the Creator; but it can\u2019t be the thing that you are living for. You can\u2019t turn work into your own personal savior because it will <em>never<\/em> satisfy you in the way that you want it to satisfy you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat protects me is\u2014when I go to work with a heart that is already full, I don\u2019t need work to do that for me. Work, now, is in its rightful place. So, I can say, \u201cNo; I\u2019ve got four children. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019m not going to take on another project.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m free to do that because I\u2019m not asking work to be for me what it can\u2019t be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes; as you were talking, I thought, \u201cSo, what is the right place of work?\u201d\u00a0 I think another Paul\u2014the Apostle Paul\u2014put it quite well in Colossians, Chapter 3. He said, \u201cWhatever you do, work heartily\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 So, you\u2019re not talking about not working hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>But it says, \u201c\u2026work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.\u201d\u00a0 What is unclear about that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Boy, that is\u2014it\u2019s just right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You have to have an awe of God as you work so you do your best and not lose sight of the fact that: \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 He sees, He knows, He appreciates all the effort you took\u2014whether you are at the top of the heap at your workplace or whether you\u2019re somewhere near the bottom. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t matter. The assignment from God is what matters.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>There are thousands and thousands of Christian men\u2014when they come home at night, if they could be honest, what they really want is to be left alone because where they are getting their identity, their meaning, where they are feeding spiritually is their work. Their home exists outside of that. When they punch out from work, they punch out from life. That\u2019s not just a lack of love problem\u2014that\u2019s an awe problem. That sets up a lack of love with my family because work is in a place it was never meant to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I\u2019m just sitting here, thinking, Dennis, about the subject of how awe affects our emotions. Honestly, we don\u2019t have time\u2014in the time we\u2019ve got left\u2014to unpack that. But here\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do\u2014we\u2019re going to continue the conversation.
