He\u2019s doing it in that moment because he doesn\u2019t give a rip about God\u2019s law because he\u2019s now in the center of his world. I think there was a Bible, and there were about ten other Christian books around at that time. Do you know what I mean?\u00a0 There just wasn\u2019t a whole lot. I remember a book called <em>How to Be a Christian without Being Religious<\/em>. Do you remember that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Fritz Ridenour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It had a profound impact in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I remember a book by J.B. Phillips called <em>Your God Is Too Small<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That one as well. There were only ten books out\u2014we had to have read them all! [Laughter]\u00a0 I wish this book had been out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let me, first of all, introduce our guest, Paul David Tripp\u2014welcome him back to the broadcast. Paul, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Thanks. It\u2019s great to be here with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paul is a pastor \/ a prolific author. How many hundred books have you written, Paul?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Seventeen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Seventeen\u2014seventeen hundred. I knew it was a large number. [Laughter]\u00a0 He is an international conference speaker; and he gives leadership to his own ministry, Paul Tripp Ministries. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And he is going to be joining us in February of next year on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. Glad to have you along on the cruise with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019m excited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paul, you have written a book called <em>Awe<\/em>\u2014A-W-E. And you said in the book\u2014right out of the gate\u2014that you wrote this book for other people, but primarily for yourself. Explain to our listeners what you mean by that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, I think that, like many other people, I am a very skilled awe-amnesiac\u2014that what is meant to focus my heart and direct my life competes with other things that are less important but rise to levels of importance and control my behavior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We forget who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Or back to that book that I was talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014<em>Your God Is Too Small<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s really\u2014we live, day to day, with a functional understanding of God at a smaller level than who He really is; don\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; I think it\u2019s even bigger than that. I think what you need to understand is that human beings were hardwired for awe. We\u2019re awe-seekers. That\u2019s why we like the triple overtime NBA game, or the great, big steak, or all those kinds of experiences. We\u2019re wired for awe. And all of that was designed inside of us to draw us to God so that awe of God would be the central motivation of everything we do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou could ask me, \u201cWhy do you spend your money the way you do?\u201d\u00a0 I could say, \u201cBecause of my awe of God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhy do you relate to your wife the way you do?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause of my awe of God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, why do you treat your physical body the way you do?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause of my awe of God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; draw the line\u2014because I\u2019m having a hard time thinking of how I spend my money and my awe of God being connected. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, for example, materialism isn\u2019t a money problem \/ it\u2019s not a thing problem\u2014it\u2019s an awe problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s a heart problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, yes\u2014but it\u2019s an awe problem. See\u2014if my heart is being satisfied by the awe of God, I\u2019m not seeking satisfaction in physical things. I mean, materialism is asking material things to do for me what they were never meant to do. So, I buy myself into oblivion. I spend all of my life gaining or maintaining physical things with the hope that physical things would be my savior\u2014which they\u2019ll never be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think, just at the start here, we need you to practically define awe. Is it, in essence, practicing the presence of God?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s that capacity for wonder \/ the capacity for the fulfillment of wonder that is controlled by God and God alone. Yes; you call it worship, but there is something about that word, awe\u2014about the <em>wonder<\/em>\u2014the <em>capture<\/em> that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s the blown away by that\u2014it\u2019s: \u201cThis is what I want. This is what I live for. This is what I want to shape my life.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s that <em>thing<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We use the word, awesome, a lot and use it about things that are trivial. Instead of being awesome, we call the mundane awesome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019ve been in circumstances where\u2014maybe, you\u2019ve been at a Broadway show \/ and the lighting, the effects, the way it all comes together, the music\u2014you walk out having been emotionally-moved. You look at each other and go, \u201cThat was awesome!\u201d\u00a0 What are we saying when we say that to one another?\u00a0 How does that help us understand our definition of what awe is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>What we\u2019re talking about is something that is more deeply theological than we understand. That capacity to want to be blown away \/ that capacity for wanting wonder in our life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the fact that we have eye-gates, and ear-gates, and heart-gates that can receive that\u2014the fact that we are in a physical world that gives us that was all carefully designed by God so that would all lead us to have hearts that are satisfied with Him, where the <em>thing<\/em> that creates the deepest wonder, the <em>deepest<\/em> glory, the <em>deepest<\/em> satisfaction in me is God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why do you think that God created us with this need for awe?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Because He created us for Him. What awe finally gets you to\u2014and this is really humbling\u2014is that it\u2019s not about you \/ that I don\u2019t live in the center of my universe. It\u2019s not about my comfort. It\u2019s not about my peace. It\u2019s not about my happiness. It\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s about Him. And so, He gave us this hunger inside of us that can\u2019t be satisfied by anything else but Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the dark side of that is\u2014if you replace God with horizontal, physical, created things, awe is not replaced by awe; awe is replaced by addiction because those things can\u2019t satisfy you. So, you\u2019ve got to go back again, and again, and again. Somewhere along the way, you get hooked. You get hooked to the love of a person, or you get hooked to business success, or you get hooked to alcohol. We\u2019re all addicts in some way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Experiences through entertainment, athletics\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure\u2014or the next big adventure, or vacation, or whatever\u2014because those things <em>can\u2019t<\/em> satisfy you. That\u2019s why Paul says\u2014in 2 Corinthians 5:15\u2014that Jesus came so those who live would no longer live for themselves. He could have said, \u201cJesus came to give you back your awe of God again\u201d; and he would have been saying the same thing because, when I\u2019m not living in awe of God, the other alternative is it is awe of me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhatever I decide will satisfy me begins to direct my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, maybe, you\u2019re a believer\u2014listening to this program, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s not me.\u201d\u00a0 Sure it is! \/ It\u2019s me!\u00a0 So, maybe, that moment is schedule\u2014I\u2019m ripping because Luella is five minutes late. Think about what that\u2019s about. I mean, that\u2019s so ugly and audacious: \u201cWho do I think I am?\u201d\u2014that: \u201cI am the center of my world, and you must not be three or four minutes late without incurring my irritation.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not a law problem\u2014that\u2019s an awe problem that creates a law problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, if a husband is screaming at his wife things that she should never hear him say\u2014he\u2019s a Christian man\u2014he\u2019s not doing that because he\u2019s ignorant of Gods law \/ \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\the is not because he knows God\u2019s law. He\u2019s doing it, in that moment, because he doesn\u2019t give a rip about God\u2019s law because he\u2019s now in the center of his world. It\u2019s all about him; and somehow, she has gotten in the way of what he wants. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if you\u2019re waiting for your wife, and she\u2019s five minutes late, and you\u2019re starting to get frustrated\u2014how does re-centering yourself on the awe of God, and stopping and remembering, \u201cGod is indeed majestic, and mighty, and all-glorious,\u201d\u2014how does that affect the fact that \u201cI\u2019m still a little irritated because I wanted to be here when things started\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you wrote the book about having awe. You\u2019ve undoubtedly been irritated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>It\u2019s an easy question to answer because what you need to own is: \u201cYour emotional life always reveals what your heart is in awe of\u2014where you are happy, where you are joyful, where you\u2019re angry, where you\u2019re sad.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment, God, in His grace, is giving me warning signs. The warning sign is my anger. The fact that I even recognize that I am angry is grace. So, how about\u2014in that moment, instead of yelling at my wife, cry out to God and say: \u201cGod, help me!\u00a0 Here I am again. I forget who You are. I forget Your existence. I get into <em>my<\/em> world and what I want. I <em>need<\/em> Your help.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>What has happened in that moment is anger\u2014instead of producing dysfunctional relationships\u2014it has begun to produce worship. How beautiful is that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m just listening to you here; and I am thinking, \u201cThe awe of God should produce fruit in your life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Galatians 5 talks about the fruit of the Spirit. The first one is love. If people want to know how to love\u2014how to love an imperfect person, an imperfect child, an imperfect relative\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the way they learn that is by falling in love with Christ\u2014standing in awe of His love for you \/ getting a better understanding of His love. At some point, that has to begin to spill over into your relationships in life; shouldn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. And motivationally, if I\u2019m living in awe of God\u2014and these things picture God\u2019s agenda\u2014I think: \u201cI want to be a part of that!\u00a0 This is the most <em>amazing<\/em>, wise, powerful, glorious, holy, good Person in the universe.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u201cIf this is what He values, I want to value that.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what awe does for me instead of: \u201cI\u2019m going to hold onto the things that are important to me, and I don\u2019t care what happens. These are the things I want.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, who am I in awe of there?\u2014me. And so, what happens, I think, for some of us is\u2014that because we are not dealing with this awe issue, our Christianity stays on the fringes because, when push comes to shove\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not on Sunday morning, when we\u2019re singing some glorious worship song\u2014but on Wednesday evening, Thursday night, Friday morning\u2014what is really motivating us is: my holy wants, my holy needs, my holy feelings. That\u2019s not okay because that\u2019s a contradiction of <em>everything<\/em> we say we actually believe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You talked about, at the beginning of the broadcast, how you suffered from spiritual amnesia, which prevents you from having this awe\u2014prevents you from knowing how to love, how to be patient with your wife, etc. What must we do about this amnesia\u2014this tendency to forget who God is and to move toward making ourselves the center of the universe?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I think this is a very specific. I think, for most of us, what it means\u2014I mean, for all of us what it means is: \u201cStart everyday with gazing upon the glory of the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cFill your heart with the <em>stunning<\/em> glory of God every day.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou say, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d\u00a0 How about Isaiah 40, where the prophet stretches the human language as far as he can to capture the glory of God?\u00a0 How about reading the last few chapters of Job, where God has that, \u201cWhere were you when the foundations of creation were laid?\u201d\u00a0 How about Ephesians 1 that lays out the saving glory of God throughout the ages?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, remember\u2014remember something that\u2019s glorious. That glory of God doesn\u2019t just define God; it defines your identity as a child of God because He has <em>unleashed<\/em> that glory on you by grace. All that God is\u2014He is for you by grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd my experience is\u2014if I stop every morning, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to do, and I remind myself that the <em>center<\/em> of my universe is this Being of that stunning awesome glory, and that my identity, and security, and satisfaction will only ever be found in Him, that gets me the right start in the morning because here\u2019s what happens to men when I wake up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I wake up <em>loaded<\/em> with Paul\u2019s agenda \/ <em>loaded<\/em> with Paul\u2019s sense of what he wants and what he\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is not the Apostle Paul\u2019s agenda either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No; no. This is the mustachioed one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is paul\u2014the small p\u2014paul. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Right; absolutely. [Laughter]\u00a0 And that\u2019s just\u2014that corrective is <em>so<\/em> helpful for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to say one other thing\u2014if you are married, make that a conversation that you welcome \/ you plead for from the other person. So, if I\u2019m in a moment and Luella can sense my irritation, I\u2019ve invited her to say to me: \u201cHey, Paul, what\u2019s going on?\u00a0 Why are you up tight?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, she doesn\u2019t have to say anything more than that. I go: \u201cOh!\u00a0 There it is again\u201d; and I\u2019ll say to her: \u201cForgive me. I\u2019m so sorry. I lost my way.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think you hit on something really important there. If you\u2019re going to recapture the awe of God, you\u2019ve got to go to the Bible, which you pointed us to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob knows\u2014I\u2019ve been reading in the Gospels because I just want to go near Jesus. I think we get off into the rest of the Bible and get away from who Christ is, and His road to the cross, and His resurrection. I\u2019ve just been trying to spend a lot of time in the past year in the Gospels. This morning, I was amazed He forgave a woman of her sins. And I almost said something to Barbara\u2014and I should have\u2014because I think: \u201cIf you are seeing the awe of God, share it with your spouse.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Something you\u2019re learning from the Bible, something that has hit you that morning, something that has centered you: \u201cPass it on \/ pass it on to your kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet them know that your heart occasionally does get captured by the King of kings and Lord of lords.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Nourishing my awe of God makes me more susceptible to be willing to admit my awelessness because the thing is enlivened inside of me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And that\u2019s our natural bent from the time we get up in the morning\u2014it\u2019s all about: \u201cWhat am I going to eat?\u00a0 What am I going to do?\u00a0 What are my goals this day?\u201d\u00a0 And we all need to be weaned away from that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I\u2019ve increasingly said this, Paul\u2014and I bet you can identify with this statement\u2014I have increasingly said: \u201cI think life is one long process of God weaning us from the world\u2014and pointing out where real life \/ where real glory is\u2014it\u2019s in heaven. What I long for isn\u2019t here. I\u2019m not really home. I\u2019m headed to my home, and that\u2019s what eternal life is all about.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>And I wonder, right now, Paul, if there is a listener, who is listening to us, going, \u201cMan, I don\u2019t even know what you guys are talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cabout knowing God.\u201d\u00a0 The reason is they don\u2019t have a personal relationship with Him. They\u2019ve never come to the point of placing their faith in Christ, like the woman Christ forgave. She was born again on the spot. Jesus said: \u201cI forgive you. You\u2019re faith has given you eternal life.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat would you say to the person, right now, who is listening to us, who needs a relationship with Christ but doesn\u2019t have it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I would say this: \u201cEvery moment of awe\u2014no matter what it\u2019s about\u2014is hunger for God. You just don\u2019t know it. You\u2019re <em>crying<\/em> out for something to excite you, to <em>satisfy<\/em> you, to give your life meaning and purpose, to make it worthwhile to breathe. You\u2019re hungering for God \/ you\u2019re crying out for God. How about doing that? How about, right now?\u2014saying: \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know You; but I now understand I\u2019ve been searching for You my whole life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWon\u2019t You make Yourself known to me?\u00a0 I need You because I\u2019ve begun to realize just by listening today that all the things I\u2019m looking to satisfy me will never satisfy me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Jesus is the manifestation of that God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And should they expect some instant experience of awe when they cry out like that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No, I think, like everything else, change is a process. It begins with an event, but it\u2019s a process. And one of the things that happened to me in writing this book is\u2014the more I wrote, the more personally convicted I became \/ the more I quit writing as an expert and wrote as a person who is on the journey as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that really is encapsulated in what Christ said in John, Chapter 5. He said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHe does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you are looking to find some awe in your life today, think about the thought that Almighty God stepped out of eternity in the person of Jesus Christ, died on the cross for your sins, paid the penalty that you couldn\u2019t pay, and has forgiven you, and then, defeated death, and offers you eternal life if you\u2019ll cry out to His Son to save you and forgive you. That is <em>filled<\/em> with awe. That is an <em>amazing<\/em> thought\u2014that God could let me into heaven\u2014not on the basis of who I am \/ my good works\u2014but something that He did for me. That is the gospel; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; it is. And what a\u2014think of how horrible the alternative is!\u00a0 \u201cI bump around this world\u2014I don\u2019t really ever reach satisfaction. I suffer a lot of things we all suffer\u2014injustices, and physical sickness, and those things. Then, it goes black.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what you would live for? How about?\u2014\u201cMy life is invaded by this God of grace, who forgives me for every wrong I\u2019ve ever done; and, then, when it ends, He loves me perfectly forever, and ever, and ever, and ever.\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t put enough \u2018evers\u2019 on the end of that. What a gorgeous story!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That creates some awe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the rest\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I get chills when I talk about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And the rest of your life you get to find out more, and more, and more about the God of the universe\u2014and His mercy, His grace, His forgiveness, and His love. And that will create awe at the beginning of your day or the end of your day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>As you do that, your awe for God is going to increase throughout your lifetime. The more you know God\u2014the more awesome you realize He is. He doesn\u2019t become more awesome\u2014you just realize that the awesomeness that is there \/ you begin to get a picture of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think you get a picture of it when you read through your book, which is called <em>Awe: Why It Matters for Everything We Think, Say, and Do<\/em>. I think there was a Bible, and there were about ten other Christian books around at that time. Do you know what I mean?\u00a0 There just wasn\u2019t a whole lot. I remember a book called <em>How to Be a Christian without Being Religious<\/em>. Do you remember that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Fritz Ridenour. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It had a profound impact in my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And I remember a book by J.B. Phillips called <em>Your God Is Too Small<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That one as well. There were only ten books out\u2014we had to have read them all! [Laughter]\u00a0 I wish this book had been out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let me, first of all, introduce our guest, Paul David Tripp\u2014welcome him back to the broadcast. Paul, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Thanks. It\u2019s great to be here with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paul is a pastor \/ a prolific author. How many hundred books have you written, Paul?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Seventeen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Seventeen\u2014seventeen hundred. I knew it was a large number. [Laughter]\u00a0 He is an international conference speaker; and he gives leadership to his own ministry, Paul Tripp Ministries. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And he is going to be joining us in February of next year on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage cruise. Glad to have you along on the cruise with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019m excited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Paul, you have written a book called <em>Awe<\/em>\u2014A-W-E. And you said in the book\u2014right out of the gate\u2014that you wrote this book for other people, but primarily for yourself. Explain to our listeners what you mean by that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, I think that, like many other people, I am a very skilled awe-amnesiac\u2014that what is meant to focus my heart and direct my life competes with other things that are less important but rise to levels of importance and control my behavior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>We forget who God is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Or back to that book that I was talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014<em>Your God Is Too Small<\/em>\u2014that\u2019s really\u2014we live, day to day, with a functional understanding of God at a smaller level than who He really is; don\u2019t we?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; I think it\u2019s even bigger than that. I think what you need to understand is that human beings were hardwired for awe. We\u2019re awe-seekers. That\u2019s why we like the triple overtime NBA game, or the great, big steak, or all those kinds of experiences. We\u2019re wired for awe. And all of that was designed inside of us to draw us to God so that awe of God would be the central motivation of everything we do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou could ask me, \u201cWhy do you spend your money the way you do?\u201d\u00a0 I could say, \u201cBecause of my awe of God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhy do you relate to your wife the way you do?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause of my awe of God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, why do you treat your physical body the way you do?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause of my awe of God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Okay; draw the line\u2014because I\u2019m having a hard time thinking of how I spend my money and my awe of God being connected. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, for example, materialism isn\u2019t a money problem \/ it\u2019s not a thing problem\u2014it\u2019s an awe problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>It\u2019s a heart problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Well, yes\u2014but it\u2019s an awe problem. See\u2014if my heart is being satisfied by the awe of God, I\u2019m not seeking satisfaction in physical things. I mean, materialism is asking material things to do for me what they were never meant to do. So, I buy myself into oblivion. I spend all of my life gaining or maintaining physical things with the hope that physical things would be my savior\u2014which they\u2019ll never be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think, just at the start here, we need you to practically define awe. Is it, in essence, practicing the presence of God?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; it\u2019s that capacity for wonder \/ the capacity for the fulfillment of wonder that is controlled by God and God alone. Yes; you call it worship, but there is something about that word, awe\u2014about the <em>wonder<\/em>\u2014the <em>capture<\/em> that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014it\u2019s the blown away by that\u2014it\u2019s: \u201cThis is what I want. This is what I live for. This is what I want to shape my life.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s that <em>thing<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>We use the word, awesome, a lot and use it about things that are trivial. Instead of being awesome, we call the mundane awesome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019ve been in circumstances where\u2014maybe, you\u2019ve been at a Broadway show \/ and the lighting, the effects, the way it all comes together, the music\u2014you walk out having been emotionally-moved. You look at each other and go, \u201cThat was awesome!\u201d\u00a0 What are we saying when we say that to one another?\u00a0 How does that help us understand our definition of what awe is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>What we\u2019re talking about is something that is more deeply theological than we understand. That capacity to want to be blown away \/ that capacity for wanting wonder in our life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the fact that we have eye-gates, and ear-gates, and heart-gates that can receive that\u2014the fact that we are in a physical world that gives us that was all carefully designed by God so that would all lead us to have hearts that are satisfied with Him, where the <em>thing<\/em> that creates the deepest wonder, the <em>deepest<\/em> glory, the <em>deepest<\/em> satisfaction in me is God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Why do you think that God created us with this need for awe?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Because He created us for Him. What awe finally gets you to\u2014and this is really humbling\u2014is that it\u2019s not about you \/ that I don\u2019t live in the center of my universe. It\u2019s not about my comfort. It\u2019s not about my peace. It\u2019s not about my happiness. It\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s not about me. It\u2019s about Him. And so, He gave us this hunger inside of us that can\u2019t be satisfied by anything else but Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the dark side of that is\u2014if you replace God with horizontal, physical, created things, awe is not replaced by awe; awe is replaced by addiction because those things can\u2019t satisfy you. So, you\u2019ve got to go back again, and again, and again. Somewhere along the way, you get hooked. You get hooked to the love of a person, or you get hooked to business success, or you get hooked to alcohol. We\u2019re all addicts in some way. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Experiences through entertainment, athletics\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure\u2014or the next big adventure, or vacation, or whatever\u2014because those things <em>can\u2019t<\/em> satisfy you. That\u2019s why Paul says\u2014in 2 Corinthians 5:15\u2014that Jesus came so those who live would no longer live for themselves. He could have said, \u201cJesus came to give you back your awe of God again\u201d; and he would have been saying the same thing because, when I\u2019m not living in awe of God, the other alternative is it is awe of me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhatever I decide will satisfy me begins to direct my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, maybe, you\u2019re a believer\u2014listening to this program, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s not me.\u201d\u00a0 Sure it is! \/ It\u2019s me!\u00a0 So, maybe, that moment is schedule\u2014I\u2019m ripping because Luella is five minutes late. Think about what that\u2019s about. I mean, that\u2019s so ugly and audacious: \u201cWho do I think I am?\u201d\u2014that: \u201cI am the center of my world, and you must not be three or four minutes late without incurring my irritation.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not a law problem\u2014that\u2019s an awe problem that creates a law problem. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, if a husband is screaming at his wife things that she should never hear him say\u2014he\u2019s a Christian man\u2014he\u2019s not doing that because he\u2019s ignorant of Gods law \/ \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\the is not because he knows God\u2019s law. He\u2019s doing it, in that moment, because he doesn\u2019t give a rip about God\u2019s law because he\u2019s now in the center of his world. It\u2019s all about him; and somehow, she has gotten in the way of what he wants. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, if you\u2019re waiting for your wife, and she\u2019s five minutes late, and you\u2019re starting to get frustrated\u2014how does re-centering yourself on the awe of God, and stopping and remembering, \u201cGod is indeed majestic, and mighty, and all-glorious,\u201d\u2014how does that affect the fact that \u201cI\u2019m still a little irritated because I wanted to be here when things started\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I mean, you wrote the book about having awe. You\u2019ve undoubtedly been irritated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>It\u2019s an easy question to answer because what you need to own is: \u201cYour emotional life always reveals what your heart is in awe of\u2014where you are happy, where you are joyful, where you\u2019re angry, where you\u2019re sad.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment, God, in His grace, is giving me warning signs. The warning sign is my anger. The fact that I even recognize that I am angry is grace. So, how about\u2014in that moment, instead of yelling at my wife, cry out to God and say: \u201cGod, help me!\u00a0 Here I am again. I forget who You are. I forget Your existence. I get into <em>my<\/em> world and what I want. I <em>need<\/em> Your help.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>What has happened in that moment is anger\u2014instead of producing dysfunctional relationships\u2014it has begun to produce worship. How beautiful is that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You know, I\u2019m just listening to you here; and I am thinking, \u201cThe awe of God should produce fruit in your life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Galatians 5 talks about the fruit of the Spirit. The first one is love. If people want to know how to love\u2014how to love an imperfect person, an imperfect child, an imperfect relative\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the way they learn that is by falling in love with Christ\u2014standing in awe of His love for you \/ getting a better understanding of His love. At some point, that has to begin to spill over into your relationships in life; shouldn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. And motivationally, if I\u2019m living in awe of God\u2014and these things picture God\u2019s agenda\u2014I think: \u201cI want to be a part of that!\u00a0 This is the most <em>amazing<\/em>, wise, powerful, glorious, holy, good Person in the universe.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>\u201cIf this is what He values, I want to value that.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what awe does for me instead of: \u201cI\u2019m going to hold onto the things that are important to me, and I don\u2019t care what happens. These are the things I want.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, who am I in awe of there?\u2014me. And so, what happens, I think, for some of us is\u2014that because we are not dealing with this awe issue, our Christianity stays on the fringes because, when push comes to shove\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not on Sunday morning, when we\u2019re singing some glorious worship song\u2014but on Wednesday evening, Thursday night, Friday morning\u2014what is really motivating us is: my holy wants, my holy needs, my holy feelings. That\u2019s not okay because that\u2019s a contradiction of <em>everything<\/em> we say we actually believe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You talked about, at the beginning of the broadcast, how you suffered from spiritual amnesia, which prevents you from having this awe\u2014prevents you from knowing how to love, how to be patient with your wife, etc. What must we do about this amnesia\u2014this tendency to forget who God is and to move toward making ourselves the center of the universe?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I think this is a very specific. I think, for most of us, what it means\u2014I mean, for all of us what it means is: \u201cStart everyday with gazing upon the glory of the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cFill your heart with the <em>stunning<\/em> glory of God every day.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou say, \u201cI don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d\u00a0 How about Isaiah 40, where the prophet stretches the human language as far as he can to capture the glory of God?\u00a0 How about reading the last few chapters of Job, where God has that, \u201cWhere were you when the foundations of creation were laid?\u201d\u00a0 How about Ephesians 1 that lays out the saving glory of God throughout the ages?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, remember\u2014remember something that\u2019s glorious. That glory of God doesn\u2019t just define God; it defines your identity as a child of God because He has <em>unleashed<\/em> that glory on you by grace. All that God is\u2014He is for you by grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd my experience is\u2014if I stop every morning, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m going to do, and I remind myself that the <em>center<\/em> of my universe is this Being of that stunning awesome glory, and that my identity, and security, and satisfaction will only ever be found in Him, that gets me the right start in the morning because here\u2019s what happens to men when I wake up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I wake up <em>loaded<\/em> with Paul\u2019s agenda \/ <em>loaded<\/em> with Paul\u2019s sense of what he wants and what he\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is not the Apostle Paul\u2019s agenda either. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No; no. This is the mustachioed one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>This is paul\u2014the small p\u2014paul. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Right; absolutely. [Laughter]\u00a0 And that\u2019s just\u2014that corrective is <em>so<\/em> helpful for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to say one other thing\u2014if you are married, make that a conversation that you welcome \/ you plead for from the other person. So, if I\u2019m in a moment and Luella can sense my irritation, I\u2019ve invited her to say to me: \u201cHey, Paul, what\u2019s going on?\u00a0 Why are you up tight?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, she doesn\u2019t have to say anything more than that. I go: \u201cOh!\u00a0 There it is again\u201d; and I\u2019ll say to her: \u201cForgive me. I\u2019m so sorry. I lost my way.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I think you hit on something really important there. If you\u2019re going to recapture the awe of God, you\u2019ve got to go to the Bible, which you pointed us to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob knows\u2014I\u2019ve been reading in the Gospels because I just want to go near Jesus. I think we get off into the rest of the Bible and get away from who Christ is, and His road to the cross, and His resurrection. I\u2019ve just been trying to spend a lot of time in the past year in the Gospels. This morning, I was amazed He forgave a woman of her sins. And I almost said something to Barbara\u2014and I should have\u2014because I think: \u201cIf you are seeing the awe of God, share it with your spouse.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Sure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Something you\u2019re learning from the Bible, something that has hit you that morning, something that has centered you: \u201cPass it on \/ pass it on to your kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet them know that your heart occasionally does get captured by the King of kings and Lord of lords.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Nourishing my awe of God makes me more susceptible to be willing to admit my awelessness because the thing is enlivened inside of me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And that\u2019s our natural bent from the time we get up in the morning\u2014it\u2019s all about: \u201cWhat am I going to eat?\u00a0 What am I going to do?\u00a0 What are my goals this day?\u201d\u00a0 And we all need to be weaned away from that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I\u2019ve increasingly said this, Paul\u2014and I bet you can identify with this statement\u2014I have increasingly said: \u201cI think life is one long process of God weaning us from the world\u2014and pointing out where real life \/ where real glory is\u2014it\u2019s in heaven. What I long for isn\u2019t here. I\u2019m not really home. I\u2019m headed to my home, and that\u2019s what eternal life is all about.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>And I wonder, right now, Paul, if there is a listener, who is listening to us, going, \u201cMan, I don\u2019t even know what you guys are talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014\u201cabout knowing God.\u201d\u00a0 The reason is they don\u2019t have a personal relationship with Him. They\u2019ve never come to the point of placing their faith in Christ, like the woman Christ forgave. She was born again on the spot. Jesus said: \u201cI forgive you. You\u2019re faith has given you eternal life.\u201d\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat would you say to the person, right now, who is listening to us, who needs a relationship with Christ but doesn\u2019t have it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>I would say this: \u201cEvery moment of awe\u2014no matter what it\u2019s about\u2014is hunger for God. You just don\u2019t know it. You\u2019re <em>crying<\/em> out for something to excite you, to <em>satisfy<\/em> you, to give your life meaning and purpose, to make it worthwhile to breathe. You\u2019re hungering for God \/ you\u2019re crying out for God. How about doing that? How about, right now?\u2014saying: \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know You; but I now understand I\u2019ve been searching for You my whole life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWon\u2019t You make Yourself known to me?\u00a0 I need You because I\u2019ve begun to realize just by listening today that all the things I\u2019m looking to satisfy me will never satisfy me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And Jesus is the manifestation of that God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And should they expect some instant experience of awe when they cry out like that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>No, I think, like everything else, change is a process. It begins with an event, but it\u2019s a process. And one of the things that happened to me in writing this book is\u2014the more I wrote, the more personally convicted I became \/ the more I quit writing as an expert and wrote as a person who is on the journey as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And that really is encapsulated in what Christ said in John, Chapter 5. He said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHe does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you are looking to find some awe in your life today, think about the thought that Almighty God stepped out of eternity in the person of Jesus Christ, died on the cross for your sins, paid the penalty that you couldn\u2019t pay, and has forgiven you, and then, defeated death, and offers you eternal life if you\u2019ll cry out to His Son to save you and forgive you. That is <em>filled<\/em> with awe. That is an <em>amazing<\/em> thought\u2014that God could let me into heaven\u2014not on the basis of who I am \/ my good works\u2014but something that He did for me. That is the gospel; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; it is. And what a\u2014think of how horrible the alternative is!\u00a0 \u201cI bump around this world\u2014I don\u2019t really ever reach satisfaction. I suffer a lot of things we all suffer\u2014injustices, and physical sickness, and those things. Then, it goes black.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what you would live for? How about?\u2014\u201cMy life is invaded by this God of grace, who forgives me for every wrong I\u2019ve ever done; and, then, when it ends, He loves me perfectly forever, and ever, and ever, and ever.\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t put enough \u2018evers\u2019 on the end of that. What a gorgeous story!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>That creates some awe. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>Yes; absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>And the rest\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Paul: <\/strong>And I get chills when I talk about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. And the rest of your life you get to find out more, and more, and more about the God of the universe\u2014and His mercy, His grace, His forgiveness, and His love. And that will create awe at the beginning of your day or the end of your day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob: <\/strong>As you do that, your awe for God is going to increase throughout your lifetime. The more you know God\u2014the more awesome you realize He is. He doesn\u2019t become more awesome\u2014you just realize that the awesomeness that is there \/ you begin to get a picture of that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I think you get a picture of it when you read through your book, which is called <em>Awe: Why It Matters for Everything We Think, Say, and Do<\/em>.
