That provides Randy, as a dad, with some teachable moments. In fact, Randy remembers one particular evening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> So, he\u2019s a very good pitcher. His nickname is \u201cThe Gun Show.\u201d He comes in\u2014bases are loaded. He can\u2019t find the plate; and he walks player, after player, after player. It was excruciating for him \/ excruciating for me. The game soon ends, and we are on the losing end of it. We get in the car. I said: \u201cSon, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019m going to ask you to do something that is not going to seem normal; but I think that we ought to pray and thank God for that moment because what that moment produced in your life is something that God loves and honors\u2014that is called humility.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, May 25<sup>th<\/sup>. There are days when I walk in here, and I just go, \u201cI think it kind of smells like a locker room in here\u201d; you know?\u00a0 It just has that\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Are you saying our guest\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Not the guest!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014smells like he\u2019s been working out, Bob?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It smells a little bit like you\u2019ve been working out with him; you know?\u2014[Laughter] \u2014both of you kind of have a little bit of that [sniffs] smell to you today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to be talking about manhood today and about calling men to stand up and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought this was interesting\u2014you wrote a book calling men to step up, and our guest wrote a book calling them to stand up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI guess he thought they were farther down than you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you know, they have to stand up before they can step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, really, Randy Stinson has done us a service here in creating this book, <em>A Guide to Biblical Manhood<\/em>. Randy, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> Thanks, honored to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Randy is the Dean of the School of Church Ministries and Vice President for Academic Innovation at <em>the<\/em> Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the father of\u2014count them\u2014seven kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, he beat you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014three young men. He and his wife Danna have been for married for more than 20 years. Randy, you know, you and I have talked a lot about issues of manhood and womanhood over the years. You\u2019re really passionate about the need for men to just be men today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. I think that men are the most under-leveraged resource in the church today. They\u2019re not being called out \/ they\u2019re not being given high expectations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s weakened the church \/ it\u2019s weakened the home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why do you think that\u2019s the case?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> Well, I think it starts in Genesis 3, the fall. One of the tendencies of men is to be passive\u2014is to step down instead of stepping up \/ to lie down instead of standing up. I think that one of the reasons that this happens is it\u2019s easier to reach women and children. I think our local churches have done a disservice by not doing the extra work required to reach men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, that\u2019s an interesting statement, \u201cIt\u2019s easier to reach women and children.\u201d\u00a0 Is that because of the way we\u2019re presenting the message of the gospel or what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> We\u2019re not giving men a man-sized challenge at church. What we need to be doing in our churches is giving men assignments that a man knows requires manhood\u2014something big, something that involves risks, something that involves a problem to be solved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they work together, when they sacrifice together, when they solve a problem together\u2014that\u2019s how men build relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re putting them in these rooms like it\u2019s an eHarmony for men and asking them to trust one another and relate to one another. That\u2019s not how they do it. We need to get them active \/ give them a challenge: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tElderly women in your church that don\u2019t have heat\u2014it\u2019s winter: \u201cGo make them have heat.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how we\u2019re going to do that. I don\u2019t know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGo figure it out. Put your money together \/ pawn your watch\u2014I don\u2019t care.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou put three or four men on a task like that\u2014after they\u2019ve sacrificed together, reached in their own pockets together, solved a problem together, helped a widow together\u2014those guys trust each other. Now, what happens at the coffee shop afterward is meaningful ministry accountability. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re actually doing something like this with your family; specifically, your sons. You and I were talking before we came in the studio. You had read my book, <em>Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my book, I asked the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in your life?\u201d\u00a0 You answered the question, but you took it a step further. It\u2019s really allowing you to do the very thing you are talking about that men need to do today. You\u2019re calling your sons to something specific to be courageous about; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. I asked my boys, \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a gripping question \/ it\u2019s a great conversation starter. They had some good answers to that, and it made me get them to sit down. I involved my oldest daughter as well. I said: \u201cWrite down the top ten things you want to do in the next five years. If there\u2019s something you want to see, a place you want to go, an animal\u2014a deer you want to kill \/ an elk\u2014just put it down there, and let\u2019s see what that involves.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they did it. We sat down, and we\u2019re a big baseball family. We have been playing travel baseball\u2014both of my boys are exceptional athletes \/ very good baseball players. The list was incredible\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014mission trips they wanted to take \/ things they wanted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI sat down and looked at them all; and I said: \u201cHere\u2019s the problem. We\u2019re not going to be able to do any of this\u2014not one of these things are we going to be able to do. The reason is because we are spending all of our discretionary time and almost all of our discretionary money playing baseball. So, let\u2019s do something here about this, and we\u2019re calling it \u2018The Year of Living Courageously.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s really more like \u201cThe Year of Living Reasonably,\u201d but that wasn\u2019t quite as compelling. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve mapped it out. We made the decision in August to take18 months off of baseball. Honestly, it has been a life-changing decision; and we haven\u2019t even done anything yet\u2014just knowing what we\u2019re going to do. We\u2019re going to be in several different countries. I\u2019m taking my oldest son to Cameroon and Belize. My daughter is going to Belize and Haiti. My other son is going to Belize, and I\u2019m taking him to the Ukraine in the fall. It\u2019s been a relief to our family\u2014our conversations are different \/ we have a lot more downtime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust to be honest with you\u2014I\u2019ve read 1 Corinthians 10 about idolatry. Every time I\u2019ve read it \/ every time I\u2019ve heard a sermon about it, I ask my wife, \u201cWhat do you think of every time you hear a sermon on idolatry?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cHere\u2019s what I think: \u2018It\u2019s not <em>me<\/em>.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Every time I hear it, I always think, \u201cIt\u2019s not me\u201d; but 1 Corinthians 10 is saying it\u2019s <em>all<\/em> of us\u2014it is <em>us<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> I was humiliated and embarrassed when I cast a vision to my boys. They said: \u201cLet\u2019s just do it. Let\u2019s do it, Dad. Let\u2019s do it.\u201d\u00a0 I was humiliated. It was more difficult for me to quit than it was for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You like baseball pretty well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I <em>love<\/em> baseball, and I love watching them play. They love playing, but I don\u2019t have time to psychoanalyze myself to know what it was\u2014but I knew there was something I wasn\u2019t getting out of that that wasn\u2019t good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He, actually, brought me a baseball signed by\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> \u2014David Eckstein.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014David Eckstein who was\u2014wasn\u2019t he the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> World Series MVP. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, for the Cardinals a couple years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Signed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He brought that to <em>you<\/em>?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He brought it to <em>me<\/em>, and\u2014Oh, you didn\u2019t get one, Bob?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Oh, I\u2019m sorry! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Man, oh, man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re a Cardinal fan too. I forgot about that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, going back, though, to what Randy\u2019s talking about here\u2014what he\u2019s modeling is what he\u2019s talking about. As fathers and as men, what we want to do is\u2014we want to get about a task\u2014something that demands tension against the muscle. In this case, it\u2019s the faith muscle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014of stepping out and being courageous, and going to another country and serving people, and taking your sons with you and having that experience of sweating together, and making an impact for Jesus Christ. I mean, it\u2019s not that baseball is bad\u2014we\u2019re not saying that at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re just saying: \u201cFor your family, for this season right now, you\u2019re taking 18 months off\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand we\u2019re calling a players\u2019 strike here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s right: \u201cThe Year of Living Courageously.\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why do you think this is important for your boys to become men?\u00a0 I mean, a lot of folks would say: \u201cHey, a team sport is where I <em>learned<\/em> how to be a man. Having a great coach speaking into my life \/ team work\u2014that was fundamental manhood training for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> We are definitely a sports-oriented family. I think sports is a crucial \/ maybe even a critical tool for a father to have in place so he can observe his sons in all sorts of character-building situations. So, I\u2019m not saying not to use sports\u2014I\u2019m not sure what we\u2019re going to do at the end of the 18 months\u2014but it hasn\u2019t helped us with a vision for the whole world. So, this is just another part of my fathering strategy\u2014is that, when these boys leave my home, they\u2019ve got to have more than toughness, resiliency, and godliness. I need them to have a big vision for the whole world. One of the ways that we have the means to do it is to take them there\u2014not everybody can do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just became an insurmountable conflict in my heart and, consequently, in the boys\u2019 hearts that we were unable to do both. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I wanted to ask you\u2014because on the front cover of your book, <em>A Guide to Biblical Manhood<\/em>, one of the things it says is \u201cHow to mold men through baseball.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, here you are, taking time off from baseball. Tell me about the benefits of baseball and team sports in terms of \u201cWhat does that do to help a boy become a man?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> Well, baseball, in particular, is a sport of choice for us\u2014partially, because there is so much subjectivity to the game. I\u2019m not for the replay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Even with some of those blown calls?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I mean: \u201cJust let it happen. That is <em>life<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hey, I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014I know a guy who would take the replays. His name is Todd Worrell. [Laughter] He was the Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year in Game 6 of the World Series<em>. Clearly<\/em>, the guy was out\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the Cardinals won\u2014but the call went against them and they ended up losing the series. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, there would be those who would argue with you about that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> There are plenty of guys that would, and I\u2019m okay with that. The subjectivity of the game teaches all sorts of things about unfairness, and you can observe your boys in that moment. They strike out\u2014it was a ball, but the ump called it a strike. They\u2019re pitching\u2014it was a strike, but the ump called it a ball. They miss a ball\u2014and it\u2019s all right there\u2014everybody is focused on it \/ you don\u2019t even have to see the replay tape\u2014you know who missed the ball \/ you know who struck out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens is, as a dad, I get to see them right there in that moment. Because of the close proximity that you have to the game and to the dugout, I can even make mid-game character corrections. I can pull them aside and say: \u201cUh-uh. That\u2019s not how we do it. That\u2019s not how you handle this situation.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In terms of attitude\u2014you are saying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Attitude: \u201cDid they throw the helmet?\u201d \u201cAre they on the mound\u2014and they are throwing ball after ball and they can\u2019t find the plate\u2014and they are pouting, and I can see them pouting?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean\u2014just the humility that it cultivates. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne time, Gunnar, my oldest son\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Gunnar\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Gunnar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you named him Gunnar\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I named him Gunnar, and he is absolutely\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014before he was ever pitching, you named him that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> It was just destined to happen. [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes. Part of the predestined\u2014[Laughter]\u2014so, he\u2019s a very good pitcher. His nickname is \u201cThe Gun Show.\u201d He comes in\u2014bases are loaded. He can\u2019t find the plate; and he walks player, after player, after player. It was excruciating for him \/ excruciating for me. The coach graciously pulls him out, and the game soon ends. We\u2019re on the losing end of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get in the car. I said, \u201cGunnar\u201d\u2014and he\u2019s 12 at the time. This is the worst thing that\u2019s ever happened, in his mind. I said: \u201cSon, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019m going to ask you to do something that is not going to seem normal; but I think that we ought to pray and thank God for that moment because what that moment produced in your life is something that God loves and honors\u2014that is called humility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe alternative is pridefulness, and pridefulness invites the active opposition of God. So, what I want you to do is\u2014let\u2019s agree that was excruciating \/ it was ugly\u2014but let\u2019s also agree that moments of humility-building are a gift from God because God loves you and doesn\u2019t want to be actively opposed to you. The moments that He brings into your life like this create a scenario where He actually can and will bless you in some other way.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, baseball\u2014other sports offer those kind of moments as well\u2014but there\u2019s just nothing in my mind quite like the game of baseball. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m reliving a moment when I was coaching my boys, who played on the same team. I think my sons were good athletes\u2014we just ended up in a league that was kind of stacked against us, if you know what I mean. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think after we had lost 12 in a row\u2014every team in the league had beaten us twice\u2014and I had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That all can\u2019t all be the umpire there! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had enough humility\u2014thank you. [Laughter] It was humiliation; alright?\u00a0 I almost got thrown out of the game. In other words, as the coach\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were the head of FamilyLife at the time; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have to say that! [Laughter] We could have made this pre-historic, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014earlier, but we didn\u2019t do that. Here\u2019s what I had to do at that point\u2014I had to get the team together and apologize to the team, and then, again, to my sons on the way home because I was more than just the coach of the team to them\u2014I was their daddy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and they had to be embarrassed by their dad\u2019s temper and that I almost got tossed out of the game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, sometimes, we look at the game, and we think of what our sons are going to learn about being a man in the game; when, sometimes, it\u2019s our behavior as fans, or as coaches, or somehow as participants in the sport, where we also need to demonstrate the same kind of humility that we call them to in absorbing a defeat. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right, and to not make excuses. One of the rules I put in the book is\u2014the umpires\u2014they\u2019re the ultimate authority in the game. You go with what they call, you can\u2019t look at them in disgust, and you can\u2019t look at them incredulously after a bad call or what you thought was a bad call. It teaches subjection to authority\u2014doing what your coaches say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the biggest challenges for young men in baseball is listening to their base coaches because they want to be wise in their own eyes. They\u2019re rounding second, looking at the ball instead of their base coach. The coach wants them to turn it into a double; and they slow down because they think they couldn\u2019t make it, but the coach is supposed to make those decisions for them. It just has an <em>enormous<\/em> number of teachable moments and life lessons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we had to take a year-and-a-half off because of the level that we were involved in. We\u2019re going to try to get back, probably, at a lower level. We always want to play. You just don\u2019t have to play at the level with same commitment that we had been playing at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hours, and money, and all of it; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I would be <em>embarrassed<\/em> to tell you how much money we spent last year and how much time we spent. I\u2019m literally embarrassed to tell you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> \u2014but it is funding for mission trips\u2014I\u2019ll say that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Randy, one of the things I heard you say, as you made the decision\u2014it actually was more difficult for <em>you<\/em> to make the decision to take this sabbatical from playing baseball. Was that because you were living out some of your life through your sons?\u2014do you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there\u2019s always that temptation for a parent to see their kids excel and win the\u2014you know, go to the Little League World Series and win it all and have the applause. It\u2019s back to that idolatry issue. There\u2019s a lesson for us in this as well; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> There is no question. I think that a lot of men are trying to relive their childhood through their children, or create a situation they didn\u2019t experience through their children, or in my case\u2014the fact is\u2014baseball\u2014one of the reasons why baseball is declining in America, in terms of recreational leagues, is because you can\u2019t play catch with yourself \/ you can\u2019t hit grounders to yourself. It requires a dad, typically, to be involved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy boys are out there excelling. Who does anybody think taught them how to do all that?\u00a0 I did! There\u2019s definitely something in that for me\u2014just to see the reason why they\u2019re excelling is because of my incredible coaching ability\u2014or at least, that\u2019s what I was acting like and telling myself. [Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no question that I do think that a lot of men aren\u2019t doing things for our local churches \/ in their local churches\u2014at least, partially\u2014because they are participating in an idolatrous situation with their kids. They\u2019re going to do\u2014just like a lot of the times I would do \/ what I\u2019m saying: \u201cLook, this is a family event. I\u2019m with my boys. What more do you want?\u00a0 Let me list all of the dads that aren\u2019t playing catch with their sons. Let me list all the dads that\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can all feel family-related \/ and we\u2019re eating dinners at picnic tables at the baseball park three nights a week, and we\u2019re having family time; but I think I got\u2014I was a little like the frog in the kettle. The heat kept getting turned up and turned up. Before I knew it, I was being boiled alive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I am concerned that there is a decline in character among young men \/ older men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> It just feels like the whole issue of godly character has been neglected as a part of what we\u2019re supposed to be all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn a culture where everything is relative, nobody wants to impress young men with specific character qualities. Part of getting a man to stand up is to come back around and say, \u201cThere are character qualities that define a wise, mature man.\u201d\u00a0 We need to affirm that, and we need to embrace that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we need a playbook. We have to have a playbook\u2014an authoritative playbook that spells out what those character qualities are. I believe the best one is the Bible. Just a great word here, for young men or older men, is found in Paul\u2019s writing to the church at Corinth, 1 Corinthians, Chapter 16: 13 and 14\u2014I\u2019ve quoted this many times about being a man: \u201cBe watchful, stand firm in the faith\u201d\u2014there you\u2019ve got the standing again, there, Randy\u2014\u201cact like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just love that passage because it is an aromatic blend\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re back to the locker room smell here; right? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re back to the smell\u2014it\u2019s the aroma of love, of courage, of standing strong, and of not being passive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but engaging in life and being a man\u2014not being a passive wimp and let somebody else do it for you\u2014but piercing the darkness and making a difference in this world. That\u2019s the kind of men we need today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I knew that this is what was going to happen\u2014you\u2019d get Dennis all riled up because the theme of manhood is something that Dennis\u2019s thought a little bit about\u2014you have the book, <em>Stepping Up<\/em> \/ you have the video series, <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve seen a lot of guys go through that material. plays Little League baseball. That provides Randy, as a dad, with some teachable moments. In fact, Randy remembers one particular evening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> So, he\u2019s a very good pitcher. His nickname is \u201cThe Gun Show.\u201d He comes in\u2014bases are loaded. He can\u2019t find the plate; and he walks player, after player, after player. It was excruciating for him \/ excruciating for me. The game soon ends, and we are on the losing end of it. We get in the car. I said: \u201cSon, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019m going to ask you to do something that is not going to seem normal; but I think that we ought to pray and thank God for that moment because what that moment produced in your life is something that God loves and honors\u2014that is called humility.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, May 25<sup>th<\/sup>. There are days when I walk in here, and I just go, \u201cI think it kind of smells like a locker room in here\u201d; you know?\u00a0 It just has that\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Are you saying our guest\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Not the guest!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014smells like he\u2019s been working out, Bob?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It smells a little bit like you\u2019ve been working out with him; you know?\u2014[Laughter] \u2014both of you kind of have a little bit of that [sniffs] smell to you today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to be talking about manhood today and about calling men to stand up and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I thought this was interesting\u2014you wrote a book calling men to step up, and our guest wrote a book calling them to stand up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI guess he thought they were farther down than you. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you know, they have to stand up before they can step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, really, Randy Stinson has done us a service here in creating this book, <em>A Guide to Biblical Manhood<\/em>. Randy, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> Thanks, honored to be here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Randy is the Dean of the School of Church Ministries and Vice President for Academic Innovation at <em>the<\/em> Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the father of\u2014count them\u2014seven kids\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, he beat you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014three young men. He and his wife Danna have been for married for more than 20 years. Randy, you know, you and I have talked a lot about issues of manhood and womanhood over the years. You\u2019re really passionate about the need for men to just be men today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. I think that men are the most under-leveraged resource in the church today. They\u2019re not being called out \/ they\u2019re not being given high expectations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s weakened the church \/ it\u2019s weakened the home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why do you think that\u2019s the case?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> Well, I think it starts in Genesis 3, the fall. One of the tendencies of men is to be passive\u2014is to step down instead of stepping up \/ to lie down instead of standing up. I think that one of the reasons that this happens is it\u2019s easier to reach women and children. I think our local churches have done a disservice by not doing the extra work required to reach men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, that\u2019s an interesting statement, \u201cIt\u2019s easier to reach women and children.\u201d\u00a0 Is that because of the way we\u2019re presenting the message of the gospel or what?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> We\u2019re not giving men a man-sized challenge at church. What we need to be doing in our churches is giving men assignments that a man knows requires manhood\u2014something big, something that involves risks, something that involves a problem to be solved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they work together, when they sacrifice together, when they solve a problem together\u2014that\u2019s how men build relationships. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re putting them in these rooms like it\u2019s an eHarmony for men and asking them to trust one another and relate to one another. That\u2019s not how they do it. We need to get them active \/ give them a challenge: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tElderly women in your church that don\u2019t have heat\u2014it\u2019s winter: \u201cGo make them have heat.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how we\u2019re going to do that. I don\u2019t know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGo figure it out. Put your money together \/ pawn your watch\u2014I don\u2019t care.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou put three or four men on a task like that\u2014after they\u2019ve sacrificed together, reached in their own pockets together, solved a problem together, helped a widow together\u2014those guys trust each other. Now, what happens at the coffee shop afterward is meaningful ministry accountability. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re actually doing something like this with your family; specifically, your sons. You and I were talking before we came in the studio. You had read my book, <em>Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my book, I asked the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in your life?\u201d\u00a0 You answered the question, but you took it a step further. It\u2019s really allowing you to do the very thing you are talking about that men need to do today. You\u2019re calling your sons to something specific to be courageous about; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. I asked my boys, \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a gripping question \/ it\u2019s a great conversation starter. They had some good answers to that, and it made me get them to sit down. I involved my oldest daughter as well. I said: \u201cWrite down the top ten things you want to do in the next five years. If there\u2019s something you want to see, a place you want to go, an animal\u2014a deer you want to kill \/ an elk\u2014just put it down there, and let\u2019s see what that involves.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they did it. We sat down, and we\u2019re a big baseball family. We have been playing travel baseball\u2014both of my boys are exceptional athletes \/ very good baseball players. The list was incredible\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014mission trips they wanted to take \/ things they wanted to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI sat down and looked at them all; and I said: \u201cHere\u2019s the problem. We\u2019re not going to be able to do any of this\u2014not one of these things are we going to be able to do. The reason is because we are spending all of our discretionary time and almost all of our discretionary money playing baseball. So, let\u2019s do something here about this, and we\u2019re calling it \u2018The Year of Living Courageously.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s really more like \u201cThe Year of Living Reasonably,\u201d but that wasn\u2019t quite as compelling. [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve mapped it out. We made the decision in August to take18 months off of baseball. Honestly, it has been a life-changing decision; and we haven\u2019t even done anything yet\u2014just knowing what we\u2019re going to do. We\u2019re going to be in several different countries. I\u2019m taking my oldest son to Cameroon and Belize. My daughter is going to Belize and Haiti. My other son is going to Belize, and I\u2019m taking him to the Ukraine in the fall. It\u2019s been a relief to our family\u2014our conversations are different \/ we have a lot more downtime. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust to be honest with you\u2014I\u2019ve read 1 Corinthians 10 about idolatry. Every time I\u2019ve read it \/ every time I\u2019ve heard a sermon about it, I ask my wife, \u201cWhat do you think of every time you hear a sermon on idolatry?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cHere\u2019s what I think: \u2018It\u2019s not <em>me<\/em>.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Every time I hear it, I always think, \u201cIt\u2019s not me\u201d; but 1 Corinthians 10 is saying it\u2019s <em>all<\/em> of us\u2014it is <em>us<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> I was humiliated and embarrassed when I cast a vision to my boys. They said: \u201cLet\u2019s just do it. Let\u2019s do it, Dad. Let\u2019s do it.\u201d\u00a0 I was humiliated. It was more difficult for me to quit than it was for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You like baseball pretty well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I <em>love<\/em> baseball, and I love watching them play. They love playing, but I don\u2019t have time to psychoanalyze myself to know what it was\u2014but I knew there was something I wasn\u2019t getting out of that that wasn\u2019t good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He, actually, brought me a baseball signed by\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> \u2014David Eckstein.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014David Eckstein who was\u2014wasn\u2019t he the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> World Series MVP. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, for the Cardinals a couple years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Signed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> He brought that to <em>you<\/em>?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He brought it to <em>me<\/em>, and\u2014Oh, you didn\u2019t get one, Bob?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Oh, I\u2019m sorry! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Man, oh, man! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re a Cardinal fan too. I forgot about that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, going back, though, to what Randy\u2019s talking about here\u2014what he\u2019s modeling is what he\u2019s talking about. As fathers and as men, what we want to do is\u2014we want to get about a task\u2014something that demands tension against the muscle. In this case, it\u2019s the faith muscle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014of stepping out and being courageous, and going to another country and serving people, and taking your sons with you and having that experience of sweating together, and making an impact for Jesus Christ. I mean, it\u2019s not that baseball is bad\u2014we\u2019re not saying that at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re just saying: \u201cFor your family, for this season right now, you\u2019re taking 18 months off\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cand we\u2019re calling a players\u2019 strike here.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s right: \u201cThe Year of Living Courageously.\u201d [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Why do you think this is important for your boys to become men?\u00a0 I mean, a lot of folks would say: \u201cHey, a team sport is where I <em>learned<\/em> how to be a man. Having a great coach speaking into my life \/ team work\u2014that was fundamental manhood training for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> We are definitely a sports-oriented family. I think sports is a crucial \/ maybe even a critical tool for a father to have in place so he can observe his sons in all sorts of character-building situations. So, I\u2019m not saying not to use sports\u2014I\u2019m not sure what we\u2019re going to do at the end of the 18 months\u2014but it hasn\u2019t helped us with a vision for the whole world. So, this is just another part of my fathering strategy\u2014is that, when these boys leave my home, they\u2019ve got to have more than toughness, resiliency, and godliness. I need them to have a big vision for the whole world. One of the ways that we have the means to do it is to take them there\u2014not everybody can do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just became an insurmountable conflict in my heart and, consequently, in the boys\u2019 hearts that we were unable to do both. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I wanted to ask you\u2014because on the front cover of your book, <em>A Guide to Biblical Manhood<\/em>, one of the things it says is \u201cHow to mold men through baseball.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, here you are, taking time off from baseball. Tell me about the benefits of baseball and team sports in terms of \u201cWhat does that do to help a boy become a man?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> Well, baseball, in particular, is a sport of choice for us\u2014partially, because there is so much subjectivity to the game. I\u2019m not for the replay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Even with some of those blown calls?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I mean: \u201cJust let it happen. That is <em>life<\/em>.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hey, I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014I know a guy who would take the replays. His name is Todd Worrell. [Laughter] He was the Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year in Game 6 of the World Series<em>. Clearly<\/em>, the guy was out\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014the Cardinals won\u2014but the call went against them and they ended up losing the series. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, there would be those who would argue with you about that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> There are plenty of guys that would, and I\u2019m okay with that. The subjectivity of the game teaches all sorts of things about unfairness, and you can observe your boys in that moment. They strike out\u2014it was a ball, but the ump called it a strike. They\u2019re pitching\u2014it was a strike, but the ump called it a ball. They miss a ball\u2014and it\u2019s all right there\u2014everybody is focused on it \/ you don\u2019t even have to see the replay tape\u2014you know who missed the ball \/ you know who struck out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens is, as a dad, I get to see them right there in that moment. Because of the close proximity that you have to the game and to the dugout, I can even make mid-game character corrections. I can pull them aside and say: \u201cUh-uh. That\u2019s not how we do it. That\u2019s not how you handle this situation.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In terms of attitude\u2014you are saying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Attitude: \u201cDid they throw the helmet?\u201d \u201cAre they on the mound\u2014and they are throwing ball after ball and they can\u2019t find the plate\u2014and they are pouting, and I can see them pouting?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean\u2014just the humility that it cultivates. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne time, Gunnar, my oldest son\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Gunnar\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Gunnar. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014you named him Gunnar\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I named him Gunnar, and he is absolutely\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014before he was ever pitching, you named him that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> It was just destined to happen. [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes. Part of the predestined\u2014[Laughter]\u2014so, he\u2019s a very good pitcher. His nickname is \u201cThe Gun Show.\u201d He comes in\u2014bases are loaded. He can\u2019t find the plate; and he walks player, after player, after player. It was excruciating for him \/ excruciating for me. The coach graciously pulls him out, and the game soon ends. We\u2019re on the losing end of it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe get in the car. I said, \u201cGunnar\u201d\u2014and he\u2019s 12 at the time. This is the worst thing that\u2019s ever happened, in his mind. I said: \u201cSon, here\u2019s the deal. I\u2019m going to ask you to do something that is not going to seem normal; but I think that we ought to pray and thank God for that moment because what that moment produced in your life is something that God loves and honors\u2014that is called humility. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong> \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe alternative is pridefulness, and pridefulness invites the active opposition of God. So, what I want you to do is\u2014let\u2019s agree that was excruciating \/ it was ugly\u2014but let\u2019s also agree that moments of humility-building are a gift from God because God loves you and doesn\u2019t want to be actively opposed to you. The moments that He brings into your life like this create a scenario where He actually can and will bless you in some other way.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, baseball\u2014other sports offer those kind of moments as well\u2014but there\u2019s just nothing in my mind quite like the game of baseball. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m reliving a moment when I was coaching my boys, who played on the same team. I think my sons were good athletes\u2014we just ended up in a league that was kind of stacked against us, if you know what I mean. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think after we had lost 12 in a row\u2014every team in the league had beaten us twice\u2014and I had\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That all can\u2019t all be the umpire there! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had enough humility\u2014thank you. [Laughter] It was humiliation; alright?\u00a0 I almost got thrown out of the game. In other words, as the coach\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were the head of FamilyLife at the time; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t have to say that! [Laughter] We could have made this pre-historic, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014earlier, but we didn\u2019t do that. Here\u2019s what I had to do at that point\u2014I had to get the team together and apologize to the team, and then, again, to my sons on the way home because I was more than just the coach of the team to them\u2014I was their daddy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and they had to be embarrassed by their dad\u2019s temper and that I almost got tossed out of the game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, sometimes, we look at the game, and we think of what our sons are going to learn about being a man in the game; when, sometimes, it\u2019s our behavior as fans, or as coaches, or somehow as participants in the sport, where we also need to demonstrate the same kind of humility that we call them to in absorbing a defeat. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right, and to not make excuses. One of the rules I put in the book is\u2014the umpires\u2014they\u2019re the ultimate authority in the game. You go with what they call, you can\u2019t look at them in disgust, and you can\u2019t look at them incredulously after a bad call or what you thought was a bad call. It teaches subjection to authority\u2014doing what your coaches say. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the biggest challenges for young men in baseball is listening to their base coaches because they want to be wise in their own eyes. They\u2019re rounding second, looking at the ball instead of their base coach. The coach wants them to turn it into a double; and they slow down because they think they couldn\u2019t make it, but the coach is supposed to make those decisions for them. It just has an <em>enormous<\/em> number of teachable moments and life lessons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we had to take a year-and-a-half off because of the level that we were involved in. We\u2019re going to try to get back, probably, at a lower level. We always want to play. You just don\u2019t have to play at the level with same commitment that we had been playing at. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hours, and money, and all of it; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> I would be <em>embarrassed<\/em> to tell you how much money we spent last year and how much time we spent. I\u2019m literally embarrassed to tell you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> \u2014but it is funding for mission trips\u2014I\u2019ll say that. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Randy, one of the things I heard you say, as you made the decision\u2014it actually was more difficult for <em>you<\/em> to make the decision to take this sabbatical from playing baseball. Was that because you were living out some of your life through your sons?\u2014do you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there\u2019s always that temptation for a parent to see their kids excel and win the\u2014you know, go to the Little League World Series and win it all and have the applause. It\u2019s back to that idolatry issue. There\u2019s a lesson for us in this as well; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Randy:<\/strong> There is no question. I think that a lot of men are trying to relive their childhood through their children, or create a situation they didn\u2019t experience through their children, or in my case\u2014the fact is\u2014baseball\u2014one of the reasons why baseball is declining in America, in terms of recreational leagues, is because you can\u2019t play catch with yourself \/ you can\u2019t hit grounders to yourself. It requires a dad, typically, to be involved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy boys are out there excelling. Who does anybody think taught them how to do all that?\u00a0 I did! There\u2019s definitely something in that for me\u2014just to see the reason why they\u2019re excelling is because of my incredible coaching ability\u2014or at least, that\u2019s what I was acting like and telling myself. [Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no question that I do think that a lot of men aren\u2019t doing things for our local churches \/ in their local churches\u2014at least, partially\u2014because they are participating in an idolatrous situation with their kids. They\u2019re going to do\u2014just like a lot of the times I would do \/ what I\u2019m saying: \u201cLook, this is a family event. I\u2019m with my boys. What more do you want?\u00a0 Let me list all of the dads that aren\u2019t playing catch with their sons. Let me list all the dads that\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can all feel family-related \/ and we\u2019re eating dinners at picnic tables at the baseball park three nights a week, and we\u2019re having family time; but I think I got\u2014I was a little like the frog in the kettle. The heat kept getting turned up and turned up. Before I knew it, I was being boiled alive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I am concerned that there is a decline in character among young men \/ older men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> It just feels like the whole issue of godly character has been neglected as a part of what we\u2019re supposed to be all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn a culture where everything is relative, nobody wants to impress young men with specific character qualities. Part of getting a man to stand up is to come back around and say, \u201cThere are character qualities that define a wise, mature man.\u201d\u00a0 We need to affirm that, and we need to embrace that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we need a playbook. We have to have a playbook\u2014an authoritative playbook that spells out what those character qualities are. I believe the best one is the Bible. Just a great word here, for young men or older men, is found in Paul\u2019s writing to the church at Corinth, 1 Corinthians, Chapter 16: 13 and 14\u2014I\u2019ve quoted this many times about being a man: \u201cBe watchful, stand firm in the faith\u201d\u2014there you\u2019ve got the standing again, there, Randy\u2014\u201cact like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just love that passage because it is an aromatic blend\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re back to the locker room smell here; right? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re back to the smell\u2014it\u2019s the aroma of love, of courage, of standing strong, and of not being passive\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Randy:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but engaging in life and being a man\u2014not being a passive wimp and let somebody else do it for you\u2014but piercing the darkness and making a difference in this world. That\u2019s the kind of men we need today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I knew that this is what was going to happen\u2014you\u2019d get Dennis all riled up because the theme of manhood is something that Dennis\u2019s thought a little bit about\u2014you have the book, <em>Stepping Up<\/em> \/ you have the video series, <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve seen a lot of guys go through that material.
