Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. We were together in Lynchburg, Virginia, back in October. We had several hundred people joining us there, and several thousand people in locations all across the country, who spent a day with us, hearing messages like the message we\u2019re hearing this week from Alistair Begg about the importance of understanding God\u2019s design \/ God\u2019s plan for our marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a great message. Alistair is, of course, the pastor at Parkside Church in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. He is heard on the daily radio program, <em>Truth for Life. <\/em>He\u2019s a good friend, and I think our listeners are going to appreciate what he has to share.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if you missed the first half of the message, you can go online and listen to it there. Frankly, you ought to. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014in 23-and-a-half years Bob has ever called me a dog. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we are going to hear a message that isn\u2019t a dog today. You know what? Let\u2019s cut away from the chase here, and let\u2019s listen to Alistair Begg at <em>I Still Do<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Now, you see, God has ordained marriage and God has ordained the boundaries for marriage. The boundaries for marriage are not a cage, as some suggest. The boundaries for marriage are not detrimental to the dimensions of intimacy, and joy, and so on; but they are absolutely essential for a number of things. One\u2014for security\u2014security: \u201cHow do I know she\u2019s not going to run out on me when she finds out what I\u2019m really like?\u201d\u2014 because she promised. \u201cHow does she know that I won\u2019t bolt on her?\u201d\u2014because I promised \/ I promised! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, in Christ, when you begin marriage, you\u2019ve got these two clumsy, stumbling sinners who are now <em>stuck<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, you are! You are gloriously, wonderfully <em>stuck<\/em>! [Laughter] And the promises that you made to God and to each other are the <em>key<\/em> to it because, you see, when the first blush of romantic passion flickers and fades\u2014and that will be a recurring cycle in the framework of marriage\u2014the safety we find is the safety that is in our vows.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we don\u2019t believe that God\u2019s way is best \/ if we don\u2019t believe that is His good, pleasing, and perfect will, then we\u2019ll be tempted to buy into the cultural narrative that values spontaneity over stability\u2014and so the whole notion is, \u201cWell, I used to have such a <em>feeling<\/em>, and I\u2019ve got to get that feeling again!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen! When I held my wife\u2019s hand\u2014and I met my wife 47 years ago tomorrow\u2014when she was a 13-year-old girl and I was16\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014 when I held her hand for the first time, it was like electricity. I mean, I\u2019m surprised my hair never actually elevated on my head. When I hold her hand today, it\u2019s not the same as then; it is <em>better<\/em>, but it\u2019s not the same <em>feeling<\/em>. Do you want the <em>feeling<\/em>, or do you want to do what God says?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, society deals with this. The sort of serial affairs of Hollywood are emblematic of it. Society says, when that happens, it\u2019s time for a change: \u201cObviously, you need a change! The thing\u2019s not really working. I mean, if it was really working, you\u2019d feel the way you always felt. Now you don\u2019t feel that way; therefore, at least, you should have a part-time experience of something.\u201d That\u2019s Elton John\u2014\u201cYou, me, and everybody needs a part-time love.\u201d That\u2019s what society says. The Bible says it\u2019s time for you to commit to the promises that you made in your vows.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, husbands and wives sit and tell me, as they tell their pastors all across the country, about how things are not just doing so well: \u201cIf you knew what my wife was like. She\u2019s a problem. She\u2019s always over at her mother\u2019s house. Her mother is an interfering person,\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve got some difficulties with our finances,\u201d \u201cI mean, physically, it\u2019s just not what it was. I mean, look at her \/ I mean, look at me! I didn\u2019t mean to say, \u2018Look at me,\u2019\u2014 Look at us!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI sit and listen for a while, and I say, \u201cSo what you\u2019re saying to me is that this marriage thing is <em>worse<\/em>.\u201d \u201cExactly!\u201d\u2014to which I say, \u201cYou signed up for worse. You signed up for worse. That was in the vows!\u2014\u2018\u2026for better or <em>worse<\/em>\u2026\u2019\u2014you committed to worse!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo what\u2019s the issue here?\u201d [Laughter] You say, \u201cIt\u2019s obvious you don\u2019t do much pastoral counseling.\u201d Well, they never last very long; I guarantee you that! But no one\u2019s in any doubt! The vows weren\u2019t just an expression of your <em>feeling<\/em>, but they were a promise about what you would <em>do<\/em>. You <em>promised<\/em>, and now it\u2019s time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, in Ephesians 5, where Paul is working out much of this same material\u2014in verse 25, he says, \u201cHusbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church.\u201d He comes back to it again, adding to it in the 28<sup>th<\/sup> verse, where he says, \u201cHusbands <em>ought<\/em> [emphasis added]to love their wives.\u201d They <em>ought<\/em> to love their wives. Isn\u2019t it quite frequent in our contemporary culture people to say: \u201cDon\u2019t tell me what I ought to do! Don\u2019t tell me what I <em>ought<\/em> to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThat sounds too much like obligation. And if there\u2019s obligation, then that can\u2019t be the way it should be.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you something\u2014without obligation, it will never be the way it should be. It is duty; and in the realm of duty, we discover delight! How many failures\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlet\u2019s just talk with the men for a moment: \u201cHow many failures lie at the feet of men who revealed their unwillingness to do what they ought to do by expressions of unbridled selfishness?\u2014selfish in the use of time, selfish in the use of finances, selfish in the use of affection, and so on?\u2014often justifying it in terms of, \u2018Well, she\u2019s not what I expected her to be; therefore, I don\u2019t think I need to be what I need to be.\u2019\u201d Now, that kind of <em>quid pro quo<\/em> will never lead to anything other than disaster.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn a novel by one of my favorite Scottish novelists, I came across a quote, not so long ago, put in the mouth of one of the characters in the book. This lady is bemoaning the fact that her husband has essentially ditched her. She soliloquizes \/ she\u2019s pondering this while she\u2019s sitting in her house. This is what she says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre real relationships based on trust and understanding?\u2014the sharing of the little things\u2014moments of happiness and laughter, realizing you\u2019ve both just said the same thought or were about to say the same thing? James and I shared <em>nothing<\/em> except the same space and even that less and less often. I grew to realize that his emotions were without substance. His obsession was with himself, not me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d be telling me about some big contract he\u2019d signed\u2014 some export deal to the United States\u2014and I\u2019d realize he was watching his own reflection in the window as he told me, playing to his own imagined gallery, posing for photographs that weren\u2019t being taken. He was in love with the idea of me, but I was just another trophy in a life that was all about him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoy, that\u2019s quite amazing; isn\u2019t it?\u2014in a secular book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithin the boundaries of covenant love, not only is there security to be found, but it is in those boundaries that sexual intimacy and romantic creativity have the time and the framework to flourish\u2014the time and the framework to flourish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, that\u2019s the wonder of the clarity of the Bible for me. It doesn\u2019t leave any loopholes, and it\u2019s not dry \/ it\u2019s not dull. I don\u2019t find this tough, you know: \u201cDelight yourself in the wife of your youth,\u201d\u2014 \u201cOkay; I\u2019ve got that.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cHmmm\u2014even when they\u2019re not what they used to be?\u201d [Laughter] \u201cYes; yes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, this is an <em>adventure<\/em>\u2014this is fantastic! This is the way it\u2019s supposed to be. It\u2019s in this environment that you pick flowers along the line of duty. Any Labrador dog can roam around the neighborhood, fathering Poodles, and Labradoodles, and all other kinds of creatures; but it\u2019s going to take a really nice Golden Retriever to stick with his spouse for the whole journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt seems to me it must be relatively easy to go out and change your partners the way you change your socks or change your cars, but I\u2019ll tell you where the real challenge is found\u2014where the real security it found \/ where the real intimacy is found\u2014 is 40 years with one person, knowing every nook and cranny of each other\u2014 psychologically, emotionally, physically, and in other ways\u2014 and bringing satisfaction to that individual in that experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell you\u2014there is nothing like God\u2019s plan in marriage in the whole world. The devil is a liar and the father of lies! Don\u2019t listen to his lies! Let me tell you\u2014[Applause]\u2014it is within that framework as well\u2014the \u201cI take you,\u201d stuff\u2014that you can be honest, and you\u2019re forced to be humble\u2014honest and humble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, if you think about it, you didn\u2019t know this lady when you married her; but now, we can be honest \/ we can be vulnerable. Why?\u2014because we have the security within the framework of covenant love. That longevity is not only desirable, but it\u2019s possible. \u201cI\u2019m going to love you forever and ever,\u201d sang Randy Travis, \u201cas long as old men sit and talk about the weather, as long as old women sit and talk about old men. If you wonder how long I\u2019ll be faithful, I\u2019ll be happy to tell you again because I\u2019m going to love you forever, forever, and ever, Amen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you want to see your wife get crazy? Tell her that she\u2019s absolutely secure in your affections because you promised\u2014because you promised. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, it\u2019s the promise and the \u201cI take you,\u201d that keeps you in the ups and downs and ebbs and flows. It\u2019s inevitable that you will find people that are attractive to you. If you buy the lie of the devil, you will then say to yourself, \u201cWell, since the spontaneity thing is slightly on the back burner, presumably, I\u2019ve got to try to get the feeling again.\u201d You don\u2019t want to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about it\u2014the promises of God find their \u201cYes,\u201d and their \u201cAmen,\u201d in the Lord Jesus. Ultimately, our marriage is supposed to be emblematic of a far greater mystery\u2014the love of Christ for the church: \u201cHerein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and He gave His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins [1 John 4:10].\u201d John, in the same passage [1 John 3:16] says, \u201cThis is how we know what love is\u2014Jesus Christ laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our (spouse).\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, he says, \u201c\u2026for our brothers.\u201d I just changed it there\u2014I hope you don\u2019t mind\u2014but the principle is clear; isn\u2019t it? If we are to lay our lives down for our brothers and our sisters, then surely, we must lay our lives down for those who have been committed to us in marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I started with an old guy; I\u2019m going to end with an old guy\u2014George Burns, who said\u2014\u201cYou know, if you\u2019re doing a talk like this, make sure you have a good beginning and a good end; and then keep the two of them as close together as you can.\u201d [Laughter] So I want to just pay attention to him as I finish\u2014it goes like this [Quotes <em>I Wish I was Eighteen Again<\/em><sup>\u00a9<\/sup>, Sonny Throckmorton]. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I need to change that because it seems to me that that is sentimentalism, or nostalgia, or perhaps even a little bit of despair and a solid dose of stupidity. But when young people ask me about marriage, I tell them, \u201cI wish I was eighteen again,\u201d\u2014I genuinely do. So I rewrote my own line:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wish I was eighteen again\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo relive that Saturday when\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI take you,\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo a young girl called Sue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, I wish I was eighteen again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the real test, loved ones. It\u2019s a <em>long<\/em> obedience in the one direction. [Applause] If you go down any other road looking for it, I guarantee you\u2014you\u2019ll <em>really<\/em> feel disappointed spending your time in Vanity Fair. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for your attention. I am now officially finished. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have two questions for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The first relates to those couples who are not yet married because, in our day, the biblical idea of marriage \/ the biblical idea of sex inside of marriage <em>only<\/em>\u2014the idea that you don\u2019t live together until you get married\u2014that\u2019s all pass\u00e9. Can we, as a culture, get that back?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re not going to be able to get the culture back unless we get our churches back and unless we get our families back. Again, that\u2019s where, you know, these principles\u2014we long to discover them in our own lives, and now we look on our children and our grandchildren, and we want to see these things instilled there. I mean, God\u2019s pattern for church growth, actually, is directly related to the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> The Hebrew <em>Shema<\/em> [Deuteronomy 6:4-9]: \u201c\u2026these things\u2026are to be upon your heart; teach them to your children when you walk along the road, and when you lie down, and get up\u2026\u201d But, as Christians\u2014if Christians are prepared to take it seriously\u2014then, we\u2019ll have an attractive alternative to the ensuing chaos, which is prevalent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some who hear you talking about the vow we\u2019ve made, and they think: \u201cI have no hope left for my marriage. I\u2019m in a prolonged season of suffering. Do I just grit my teeth and gut it out, or what can I do to maybe get back closer to the kind of covenant love that we pledged to one another?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No, I don\u2019t think those are the alternatives, you know\u2014like some sort of slave-ish, dutiful, horrible existence or sort of crazy romantic passion. The wonder about the covenant of God is that both framework and freedom coalesce\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that duty and delight are intermingled with one another. The lie is\u2014that duty extinguishes delight \/ and that delight has to be present, and duty interferes with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible says\u2014there\u2019s an old hymn that says, \u201cIn duty that His will appoints, there are no bones for me.\u201d That\u2019s the line: \u201cIn duty that His will appoints, there are no bones for me.\u201d This is actually a pathway to freedom. We\u2019re probably going to need help by coming to an event like this \/ by talking with someone who\u2019s prepared to be honest and to help us through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, the alternatives are not \u201cGrit your teeth and hang on,\u201d or \u201cRun off with the lady up the street,\u201d but actually do what God says and let your feelings follow your doings\u2014not the other way around. Do this because God said to do it, and then trust. You\u2019ll be amazed how much there\u2019s a transformation when you do what you\u2019re supposed to do and then you discover that the affection is often found along that line.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And this is where community \/ this is where being in a church\u2014and not just going to church\u2014but being related to one another \/ sharing our burdens with one another\u2014this is God\u2019s plan for us pursuing that kind of oneness; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; I mean, the church is great because it\u2019s not a homogenous club of people that we would just automatically want to go on vacation with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> It\u2019s a whole bunch of really weird people. [Laughter] And it\u2019s the only place in the world I know where intelligent people and dumb people, like me, all hang together\u2014sing songs together \/ listen to the Bible together. In that experience, God has fashioned it in such a way that we will benefit from the team that He has put together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your message was a gift to us this morning. The boundaries for marriage are not a cage, as some suggest. The boundaries for marriage are not detrimental to the dimensions of intimacy, and joy, and so on; but they are absolutely essential for a number of things. One\u2014for security\u2014security: \u201cHow do I know she\u2019s not going to run out on me when she finds out what I\u2019m really like?\u201d\u2014 because she promised. \u201cHow does she know that I won\u2019t bolt on her?\u201d\u2014because I promised \/ I promised! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, in Christ, when you begin marriage, you\u2019ve got these two clumsy, stumbling sinners who are now <em>stuck<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, you are! You are gloriously, wonderfully <em>stuck<\/em>! [Laughter] And the promises that you made to God and to each other are the <em>key<\/em> to it because, you see, when the first blush of romantic passion flickers and fades\u2014and that will be a recurring cycle in the framework of marriage\u2014the safety we find is the safety that is in our vows.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we don\u2019t believe that God\u2019s way is best \/ if we don\u2019t believe that is His good, pleasing, and perfect will, then we\u2019ll be tempted to buy into the cultural narrative that values spontaneity over stability\u2014and so the whole notion is, \u201cWell, I used to have such a <em>feeling<\/em>, and I\u2019ve got to get that feeling again!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tListen! When I held my wife\u2019s hand\u2014and I met my wife 47 years ago tomorrow\u2014when she was a 13-year-old girl and I was16\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014 when I held her hand for the first time, it was like electricity. I mean, I\u2019m surprised my hair never actually elevated on my head. When I hold her hand today, it\u2019s not the same as then; it is <em>better<\/em>, but it\u2019s not the same <em>feeling<\/em>. Do you want the <em>feeling<\/em>, or do you want to do what God says?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, society deals with this. The sort of serial affairs of Hollywood are emblematic of it. Society says, when that happens, it\u2019s time for a change: \u201cObviously, you need a change! The thing\u2019s not really working. I mean, if it was really working, you\u2019d feel the way you always felt. Now you don\u2019t feel that way; therefore, at least, you should have a part-time experience of something.\u201d That\u2019s Elton John\u2014\u201cYou, me, and everybody needs a part-time love.\u201d That\u2019s what society says. The Bible says it\u2019s time for you to commit to the promises that you made in your vows.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, husbands and wives sit and tell me, as they tell their pastors all across the country, about how things are not just doing so well: \u201cIf you knew what my wife was like. She\u2019s a problem. She\u2019s always over at her mother\u2019s house. Her mother is an interfering person,\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ve got some difficulties with our finances,\u201d \u201cI mean, physically, it\u2019s just not what it was. I mean, look at her \/ I mean, look at me! I didn\u2019t mean to say, \u2018Look at me,\u2019\u2014 Look at us!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI sit and listen for a while, and I say, \u201cSo what you\u2019re saying to me is that this marriage thing is <em>worse<\/em>.\u201d \u201cExactly!\u201d\u2014to which I say, \u201cYou signed up for worse. You signed up for worse. That was in the vows!\u2014\u2018\u2026for better or <em>worse<\/em>\u2026\u2019\u2014you committed to worse!\u201d [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo what\u2019s the issue here?\u201d [Laughter] You say, \u201cIt\u2019s obvious you don\u2019t do much pastoral counseling.\u201d Well, they never last very long; I guarantee you that! But no one\u2019s in any doubt! The vows weren\u2019t just an expression of your <em>feeling<\/em>, but they were a promise about what you would <em>do<\/em>. You <em>promised<\/em>, and now it\u2019s time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, in Ephesians 5, where Paul is working out much of this same material\u2014in verse 25, he says, \u201cHusbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church.\u201d He comes back to it again, adding to it in the 28<sup>th<\/sup> verse, where he says, \u201cHusbands <em>ought<\/em> [emphasis added]to love their wives.\u201d They <em>ought<\/em> to love their wives. Isn\u2019t it quite frequent in our contemporary culture people to say: \u201cDon\u2019t tell me what I ought to do! Don\u2019t tell me what I <em>ought<\/em> to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThat sounds too much like obligation. And if there\u2019s obligation, then that can\u2019t be the way it should be.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you something\u2014without obligation, it will never be the way it should be. It is duty; and in the realm of duty, we discover delight! How many failures\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlet\u2019s just talk with the men for a moment: \u201cHow many failures lie at the feet of men who revealed their unwillingness to do what they ought to do by expressions of unbridled selfishness?\u2014selfish in the use of time, selfish in the use of finances, selfish in the use of affection, and so on?\u2014often justifying it in terms of, \u2018Well, she\u2019s not what I expected her to be; therefore, I don\u2019t think I need to be what I need to be.\u2019\u201d Now, that kind of <em>quid pro quo<\/em> will never lead to anything other than disaster.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn a novel by one of my favorite Scottish novelists, I came across a quote, not so long ago, put in the mouth of one of the characters in the book. This lady is bemoaning the fact that her husband has essentially ditched her. She soliloquizes \/ she\u2019s pondering this while she\u2019s sitting in her house. This is what she says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre real relationships based on trust and understanding?\u2014the sharing of the little things\u2014moments of happiness and laughter, realizing you\u2019ve both just said the same thought or were about to say the same thing? James and I shared <em>nothing<\/em> except the same space and even that less and less often. I grew to realize that his emotions were without substance. His obsession was with himself, not me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d be telling me about some big contract he\u2019d signed\u2014 some export deal to the United States\u2014and I\u2019d realize he was watching his own reflection in the window as he told me, playing to his own imagined gallery, posing for photographs that weren\u2019t being taken. He was in love with the idea of me, but I was just another trophy in a life that was all about him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoy, that\u2019s quite amazing; isn\u2019t it?\u2014in a secular book. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWithin the boundaries of covenant love, not only is there security to be found, but it is in those boundaries that sexual intimacy and romantic creativity have the time and the framework to flourish\u2014the time and the framework to flourish. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, that\u2019s the wonder of the clarity of the Bible for me. It doesn\u2019t leave any loopholes, and it\u2019s not dry \/ it\u2019s not dull. I don\u2019t find this tough, you know: \u201cDelight yourself in the wife of your youth,\u201d\u2014 \u201cOkay; I\u2019ve got that.\u201d [Laughter] \u201cHmmm\u2014even when they\u2019re not what they used to be?\u201d [Laughter] \u201cYes; yes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, this is an <em>adventure<\/em>\u2014this is fantastic! This is the way it\u2019s supposed to be. It\u2019s in this environment that you pick flowers along the line of duty. Any Labrador dog can roam around the neighborhood, fathering Poodles, and Labradoodles, and all other kinds of creatures; but it\u2019s going to take a really nice Golden Retriever to stick with his spouse for the whole journey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt seems to me it must be relatively easy to go out and change your partners the way you change your socks or change your cars, but I\u2019ll tell you where the real challenge is found\u2014where the real security it found \/ where the real intimacy is found\u2014 is 40 years with one person, knowing every nook and cranny of each other\u2014 psychologically, emotionally, physically, and in other ways\u2014 and bringing satisfaction to that individual in that experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell you\u2014there is nothing like God\u2019s plan in marriage in the whole world. The devil is a liar and the father of lies! Don\u2019t listen to his lies! Let me tell you\u2014[Applause]\u2014it is within that framework as well\u2014the \u201cI take you,\u201d stuff\u2014that you can be honest, and you\u2019re forced to be humble\u2014honest and humble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, if you think about it, you didn\u2019t know this lady when you married her; but now, we can be honest \/ we can be vulnerable. Why?\u2014because we have the security within the framework of covenant love. That longevity is not only desirable, but it\u2019s possible. \u201cI\u2019m going to love you forever and ever,\u201d sang Randy Travis, \u201cas long as old men sit and talk about the weather, as long as old women sit and talk about old men. If you wonder how long I\u2019ll be faithful, I\u2019ll be happy to tell you again because I\u2019m going to love you forever, forever, and ever, Amen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you want to see your wife get crazy? Tell her that she\u2019s absolutely secure in your affections because you promised\u2014because you promised. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, it\u2019s the promise and the \u201cI take you,\u201d that keeps you in the ups and downs and ebbs and flows. It\u2019s inevitable that you will find people that are attractive to you. If you buy the lie of the devil, you will then say to yourself, \u201cWell, since the spontaneity thing is slightly on the back burner, presumably, I\u2019ve got to try to get the feeling again.\u201d You don\u2019t want to do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink about it\u2014the promises of God find their \u201cYes,\u201d and their \u201cAmen,\u201d in the Lord Jesus. Ultimately, our marriage is supposed to be emblematic of a far greater mystery\u2014the love of Christ for the church: \u201cHerein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and He gave His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins [1 John 4:10].\u201d John, in the same passage [1 John 3:16] says, \u201cThis is how we know what love is\u2014Jesus Christ laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our (spouse).\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, he says, \u201c\u2026for our brothers.\u201d I just changed it there\u2014I hope you don\u2019t mind\u2014but the principle is clear; isn\u2019t it? If we are to lay our lives down for our brothers and our sisters, then surely, we must lay our lives down for those who have been committed to us in marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I started with an old guy; I\u2019m going to end with an old guy\u2014George Burns, who said\u2014\u201cYou know, if you\u2019re doing a talk like this, make sure you have a good beginning and a good end; and then keep the two of them as close together as you can.\u201d [Laughter] So I want to just pay attention to him as I finish\u2014it goes like this [Quotes <em>I Wish I was Eighteen Again<\/em><sup>\u00a9<\/sup>, Sonny Throckmorton]. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I need to change that because it seems to me that that is sentimentalism, or nostalgia, or perhaps even a little bit of despair and a solid dose of stupidity. But when young people ask me about marriage, I tell them, \u201cI wish I was eighteen again,\u201d\u2014I genuinely do. So I rewrote my own line:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wish I was eighteen again\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo relive that Saturday when\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI take you,\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo a young girl called Sue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, I wish I was eighteen again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the real test, loved ones. It\u2019s a <em>long<\/em> obedience in the one direction. [Applause] If you go down any other road looking for it, I guarantee you\u2014you\u2019ll <em>really<\/em> feel disappointed spending your time in Vanity Fair. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for your attention. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have two questions for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The first relates to those couples who are not yet married because, in our day, the biblical idea of marriage \/ the biblical idea of sex inside of marriage <em>only<\/em>\u2014the idea that you don\u2019t live together until you get married\u2014that\u2019s all pass\u00e9. Can we, as a culture, get that back?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re not going to be able to get the culture back unless we get our churches back and unless we get our families back. Again, that\u2019s where, you know, these principles\u2014we long to discover them in our own lives, and now we look on our children and our grandchildren, and we want to see these things instilled there. I mean, God\u2019s pattern for church growth, actually, is directly related to the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> The Hebrew <em>Shema<\/em> [Deuteronomy 6:4-9]: \u201c\u2026these things\u2026are to be upon your heart; teach them to your children when you walk along the road, and when you lie down, and get up\u2026\u201d But, as Christians\u2014if Christians are prepared to take it seriously\u2014then, we\u2019ll have an attractive alternative to the ensuing chaos, which is prevalent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There are some who hear you talking about the vow we\u2019ve made, and they think: \u201cI have no hope left for my marriage. I\u2019m in a prolonged season of suffering. Do I just grit my teeth and gut it out, or what can I do to maybe get back closer to the kind of covenant love that we pledged to one another?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> No, I don\u2019t think those are the alternatives, you know\u2014like some sort of slave-ish, dutiful, horrible existence or sort of crazy romantic passion. The wonder about the covenant of God is that both framework and freedom coalesce\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014that duty and delight are intermingled with one another. The lie is\u2014that duty extinguishes delight \/ and that delight has to be present, and duty interferes with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Bible says\u2014there\u2019s an old hymn that says, \u201cIn duty that His will appoints, there are no bones for me.\u201d That\u2019s the line: \u201cIn duty that His will appoints, there are no bones for me.\u201d This is actually a pathway to freedom. We\u2019re probably going to need help by coming to an event like this \/ by talking with someone who\u2019s prepared to be honest and to help us through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, the alternatives are not \u201cGrit your teeth and hang on,\u201d or \u201cRun off with the lady up the street,\u201d but actually do what God says and let your feelings follow your doings\u2014not the other way around. Do this because God said to do it, and then trust. You\u2019ll be amazed how much there\u2019s a transformation when you do what you\u2019re supposed to do and then you discover that the affection is often found along that line.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And this is where community \/ this is where being in a church\u2014and not just going to church\u2014but being related to one another \/ sharing our burdens with one another\u2014this is God\u2019s plan for us pursuing that kind of oneness; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> Yes; I mean, the church is great because it\u2019s not a homogenous club of people that we would just automatically want to go on vacation with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alistair:<\/strong> It\u2019s a whole bunch of really weird people. [Laughter] And it\u2019s the only place in the world I know where intelligent people and dumb people, like me, all hang together\u2014sing songs together \/ listen to the Bible together. In that experience, God has fashioned it in such a way that we will benefit from the team that He has put together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your message was a gift to us this morning.
