Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Bob, I\u2019ve got a question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait, wait\u2014wait. No, no, no. Don\u2019t take me\u2014no, no, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question for you. Who was the founder of Valentine\u2019s Day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Saint Valentine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, no, no. That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no. It was Charles, Duke of Orleans, who, in 1415, was imprisoned. The way he passed time was by writing romantic verses to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? Is this from Wikipedia<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>? Where\u2019d you get this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Uh\u2014it wasn\u2019t Wikipedia. It was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Where was it? You just googled [Laughter] \u2014you just googled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is not true! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You are just believing whatever you found on the internet\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is not true. It was \u201cWhere Stuff Comes From,\u201d I think, or something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There have been a few times, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, when I have just brought you in the studio and you had no idea what we were going to be talking about; right?\u2014a couple of times when that has happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Slightly more than a couple. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember\u2014there was one program, where I said: \u201cCome in. Sit down, and listen to this thing Al Mohler said; and then, tell me what you think about it.\u201d Do you remember that show?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, so, I thought this is really an example of turnabout is fair play because you just said, \u201cCome in the studio because I want to talk about something Barbara has been working on;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just, in the providence of God, what was I reading, earlier today, on my Kindle device? You see right there? What is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> <em>Charity and Its Fruits<\/em> by Jonathan Edwards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> <em>Charity and Its Fruits<\/em> by Jonathan Edwards. Are you familiar with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I know Jonathan Edwards. I know <em>of<\/em> him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara Rainey is joining us today, as well, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thank you for being here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Thank you, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And charity, of course, is love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And this is the book that Jonathan Edwards wrote on 1 Corinthians 13\u2014the whole chapter. The reason I was reading it was because, back last fall, at our church, I preached a sermon series on 1 Corinthians 13\u2014verses 1-7.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Very good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I have no idea what we\u2019re talking about here today. I come in, and on the wall is hanging this chain of hearts in preparation for Valentine\u2019s Day; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is what you\u2019ve been working on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You want to tell us what it is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s a way for families to focus on love\u2014biblical love\/God\u2019s love\u2014around Valentine\u2019s. Valentine\u2019s tends to be kind of sappy and sentimentalism; or we think Valentine\u2019s is only for couples, and it\u2019s romantic. But love is from God, and we don\u2019t know how to love unless we know Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe teaches us how to love, and He shows us how to love. In my opinion, Valentine\u2019s should be about learning about love\u2014love for one another\u2014in any relationship that you\u2019re engaged in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to tell you\u2014when I taught through 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, we most often hear that chapter read in weddings or in the context of romantic love. The main idea I got out of it was: \u201cThis was a rebuke. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis was the Apostle Paul talking to a loveless people about: \u2018This is what love looks like, and you don\u2019t look like this.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what else is a family? Think about it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; exactly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When we were raising our kids, it was like: \u201cThey <em>need<\/em> training. They <em>really<\/em> need training.\u201d If there\u2019s an area they need training in, it\u2019s this right here because the world is sending false messages about what love is \/ where it comes from. Think of how Hollywood portrays love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s easy; it\u2019s feelings; it\u2019s romantic; it doesn\u2019t take any work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, forget Hollywood. My own <em>flesh<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, no doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014is telling me that love is all about <em>me<\/em> and about what satisfies me. That\u2019s what jumped out at me, as I went over and over this text, and as I read Jonathan Edwards, and as I studied this subject. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver and over again, I was just struck by the fact that love is about the sacrificial service to others. Again, that\u2019s not something that comes naturally in our lives or in families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it might just be a good idea to read the passage where Barbara has really focused on with her Valentine\u2019s resource here for families. Let me just read it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1 Corinthians 13, beginning in verse 4\u2014and just think about what Bob said about this being a rebuke\u2014challenging us to get it right: \u201cLove is patient\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Ouch!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand kind.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I\u2019m neither of those. Keep going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cLove does not envy or boast.\u201d Ooh. \u201cIt is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way. It\u2019s not irritable or resentful. It does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things. Love believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I remember somebody\u2014and you\u2019ve probably heard this too\u2014somebody, one time, said, \u201cTake the word, \u2018love,\u2019 out \/ put your own name in there,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you don\u2019t get very far before you\u2019re just lying! You are just lying!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Exactly\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me just read it: Bobis patient.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, we\u2019re done! [Laughter] See? You see, exactly, what I\u2019m talking about. But the other thing they said\u2014and this is what is so critical\u2014they said, \u201cTake the word, \u2018love,\u2019 out and put \u2018Jesus\u2019\u2014and it\u2019s the description\u2014it\u2019s who Jesus is.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s the point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That <em>is<\/em> the point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is who we are not\u2014this is who Jesus is. So the call to families and the call to all of us\u2014is not just to get our love-act together\u2014but it\u2019s to be <em>in Him<\/em> so that His love can flow through us; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly because we really do not know how to love. We think we do, but we do not know how to love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are <em>completely<\/em> incapable of loving on our own. The only way we can love, and love well, is to be in a relationship with Jesus Christ and to know Him; so that, then, His love can flow through us to other people because we\u2019re broken, and we don\u2019t know how to do it\u2014which is why the verse, that\u2019s kind of the summary verse for this\u2014even though these hearts go through 1 Corinthians 13\u2014but the summary verse is: \u201cWe love because He first loved us [1 John 4:10].\u201d We would not be able to love if He didn\u2019t first love us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which, by the way, was the verse on our wedding invitation. It\u2019s the verse that\u2019s engraved in Mary Ann\u2019s wedding ring\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Very cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because it\u2019s just a reminder, to us, that the source of love is Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, to that point, I\u2019m just reflecting back to the summer of 1972 when I fell in love with this young lady who completely captured my heart, Barbara Peterson. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point\u2014I look back, now, 41 years later, and it\u2019s like\u2014that I even <em>thought<\/em> that what I was experiencing was love is almost laughable. It is a commitment. Life is about learning how to love\u2014love God and love others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We should say\u2014you had known Barbara for years before the summer of \u201972; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She was a good friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. So what happened that summer? I mean\u2014you just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> All of a sudden, I stopped looking at her as a friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The scales fell off your eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I go: \u201cShe is a friend; but whoa, man!\u2014man\/woman!\u201d[Laughter] I kind of woke up and go: \u201cI like her, and she\u2019s running hard after God.\u201d We began our mission together\u2014neither one of us knew what we were doing, in terms of loving, but we forged a covenant\u2014that really is the headwaters of love\u2014and began the process of God tutoring us\u2014through the Scriptures \/ through each other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of how to truly love another imperfect person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara, in the book that you and Dennis wrote, years ago, about love\u2014you wrote a book called <em>Rekindling the Romance<\/em>. In that book, you talked about different seasons of love. You talked about that young infatuated\u2014in the parking lot, at the mall, when the scales fell off Dennis\u2019 eyes and he looked at you differently. He was falling in love with you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s infatuation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And that\u2019s the easy kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you fall under\u2014it\u2019s like gravity. You fall under the spell, and it just\u2014you just go downstream with it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s easy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then, you come to the rapids. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a season where love kind of has to <em>fight<\/em> through the fog to stay connected. That leads you to a season of mature love, which is the richest, deepest kind of love there is; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But you have to go through the rapids to get to the mature love\u2014the kind of love that\u2019s satisfying\u2014the kind of love that we got married for. You can\u2019t get to that unless you go through the hard times and make the choice that you\u2019re going to continue to learn to love\u2014you\u2019re going to continue to learn to forgive\u2014and you\u2019re going to continue to depend on God to give you what you, in the rapids, realize you don\u2019t have the ability to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The reason is because, in the rapids, you learn how to be patient, how to be kind, how to not insist on your own way\u2014all of the things that we find in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13. We can read that and nod our heads, but we have to go through it a few times before it starts to sink into our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that\u2019s what she\u2019s trying to do in this Valentine\u2019s resource that she\u2019s created. She\u2019s trying to, practically, bring us into the experience of love, and have us kind of have a throne-check of our own hearts, and ask the question: \u201cHow are you doing in terms of really expressing <em>real<\/em> love?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake the first one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and maybe, before we get into this, you need to explain each of these hearts is like a little book. Would you like to explain it instead of me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think I should. [Laughter] Well, the idea is to help us focus on what love is all about during Valentine\u2019s because, when kids are in school, they\u2019re talking about it. There\u2019s advertising everywhere. Yet, it\u2019s a prime opportunity for moms, and dads, and kids to focus on love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are 15 hearts that will come in the kit\u201414 of them are about 1 Corinthians 13. The 15<sup>th<\/sup> one has the verse: \u201cWe love because He first loved us [1 John 4:19],\u201d on the outside. The idea is that, starting on February 1<sup>st<\/sup>, you take the first heart and you read about \u201cLove is patient.\u201d There\u2019s a story in there about someone who demonstrated patience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, now wait. Wait. Before you get to the story on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t going to tell the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I want you to tell the story\u2014it\u2019s a great story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But on the inside of the heart are some summary statements about what it means for love to be patient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you thought the other was convicting, Bob\u2014this is as well: \u201cLove chooses self-control rather than speaking or acting out of impatience. Love doesn\u2019t retaliate. Love is willing to wait calmly. Love is long-suffering\u2014another word for patience\u2014which means waiting may be long and unpleasant, but love trusts that God is in control.\u201d And then, finally, one more: \u201cLove is not flighty or quick. It takes time to love well.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think kids can catch on to some of these, and grab hold of them, and realize: \u201cIn our family, this is the kind of love we need to be practicing with one another.\u201d Then, on the opposite side, you tell a story. I think it would be good\u2014Bob, why don\u2019t you read the story there? Just read it out loud because this is what folks would do at a breakfast before school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; and the good thing is that it\u2019s quick, and it\u2019s easy. You can have a short two\/three-minute time with your\u2014as a family\u2014before the day starts \/ before everybody goes off to school or whatever you are doing. It just kind of centers everybody, for a few moments, back on what the truth is. Each one of these has a story because stories are engaging, for children and for adults, to listen to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright. So, let me read what\u2019s on \u201cLove is Patient\u201d: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPatience is not natural to us. We feel impatient when we can\u2019t control the circumstances or people in our lives. When our parents are late to pick us up at school or the traffic jam makes us late for work, the right response is to be patient\u2014trusting that God is at work and He knows what He is doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen translating the entire Bible from Latin and Greek into English, the first person to do so, William Tyndale, practiced great patience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe desired to help his countrymen have the Bible in their own language so they, too, could read words like: \u201cWe love because He first loved us,\u201d which was the verse that changed Tyndale\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the church of that day was so violently opposed to his idea that they arrested anyone who possessed even a partial copy of the Bible. Many of these Bible owners were burned at the stake. Undeterred, William spent the rest of his life translating the entire Bible into English, while fleeing from the authorities who searched for him in every country in Europe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis long-suffering helps us see that love trusts God\u2019s control, even when the wait is unpleasant. The One who perfectly demonstrated how to love this way was Jesus. He told us how to do this when He said: \u201cI do nothing on My own. I always do the things that are pleasing to the Father.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then, after the story is read, it says here: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPause and ask God what to do or say, like Jesus did. Think about staying calm, about choosing self-control instead of blurting out whatever you feel like saying, and enduring unpleasantness while you wait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, there\u2019s a prayer here: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPatience is not easy for me, Lord\u2014not with my family, not with certain people, not with my circumstances. Help me remember it\u2019s not about me, but it\u2019s about what You want to teach me. Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picturing us reading that\u2014and our kids would be bouncing off the walls\u2014even though it only took three or four minutes, total.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, we would have done it while they were eating so they were, at least, a little bit preoccupied. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; but they\u2019ll be hearing more than you think they\u2019ll be hearing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They <em>always<\/em> hear more than you think they\u2019re hearing. They pretend like they\u2019re not listening, but they\u2019re hearing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the way to get stuff in their hearts. And it\u2019s a way to do it so that they can have takeaways that they can, ultimately, apply in their relationships with the parents and, also, their brothers and sisters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And each of these 15 hearts are clipped to a chain. In fact, when I walked into the studio, the chain was up on the studio wall. It looked like one of those \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d signs that you buy at the store to put up for somebody\u2019s birthday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you\u2019d hang this over a windowsill or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014fireplace mantle. You could hang it across a door. You can tack it on a wall\u2014just about any place. But the idea is that it\u2019s then up for the first 14 days of February, culminating on Valentine\u2019s Day. As a family, you\u2019re seeing this\u2014day, after day, after day. It\u2019s just a visual reminder of what love is all about. Hopefully, it will provide opportunities for conversation as each family member runs into an opportunity where they realize they\u2019re not loving so well. After all, maybe, they\u2019ll talk about it. Maybe, there will actually be some heart change through the process of that\u2014which is what these are shaped like\u2014are hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, it can be left up all year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe tend to think seasonally\u2014that we can only talk about love, and hearts, and things like that at Valentine\u2019s. Well, it\u2019s year-round\u2014same with Thanksgiving and gratitude. It\u2019s something that should be a part of our conversation and our lives, year-round. So, it can be left up a lot longer than February 14<sup>th<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have a feeling that this is going to be used, by God, in a lot of families\u2019 lives\u2014where kids are going to walk over, and unclip one of these hearts, and say: \u201cHey, Mom! Hey, Dad! I think you need to read this!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Little conviction reminders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, you know it sure could.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, what goes around comes around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not just us instructing the kids. We\u2019re trying to model this as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See, I was thinking, \u201cIf I was a kid, I would find the ones that were most convicting and hide them in a drawer somewhere\u2014take them off the chain and just throw it in the fire or something\u2014get rid of the whole deal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u201cGet rid of it.\u201d Well, see, that\u2019s one of my secret goals\u2014is that by creating these things that moms and dads want to do with their children\u2014I\u2019m actually teaching the moms and dads, too, because we all need the truth; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I was thinking back to what Bob said and what our kids did with a chore box. Remember the chore box?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. They went through and took out all the ones they didn\u2019t like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We had little pieces of strips of paper that were all the nastiest, dirtiest chores that you could <em>ever<\/em> imagine. And they contained a few others that were pretty simple\u2014like washing a window, or mopping the floor, sweeping the floor or taking out the garbage\u2014things that are pretty simple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I began to notice that the chore box had fewer and fewer strips of paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, what we noticed was that, when the kids got in trouble and they had to choose a chore, as a discipline, they always managed to pull out a slip of paper that was the easiest thing in the box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And it\u2019s because they threw away all the hard ones. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They had edited the inventory!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, they did. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think you guys need to read through this love stuff! You were putting messy chores in the box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You don\u2019t think that is love? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was very loving, Bob! You know that. You disciplined your kids as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. Well, again, this doesn\u2019t have to be done at Valentine\u2019s Day; but I\u2019m just thinking of all of the parents who are going to the Walmart<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and buying those 32-pack of valentines. The kids are filling them out and giving one to everybody in the class. To have something like this, up around the house at that time of the year, is going to make sense to your second-grader or your senior in high school; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right; exactly. That\u2019s the idea\u2014is that it\u2019s something that we all need to learn\u2014whether we\u2019re in kindergarten, or whether we\u2019re in high school, or whether we\u2019re an adult. There\u2019s always something to learn about being more loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did a little research on Valentine\u2019s besides finding out that Charles, Duke of Orleans, had started it in 1415.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wikipedia is not research; okay? I\u2019m just telling you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And\u2014it wasn\u2019t on Wikipedia, Bob\u2014but\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> So, you have more information for us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I have some more information.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay; good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In the 1840s, a woman, by the name of Esther Howland, sold an <em>unbelievable<\/em> number of cards around Valentine\u2019s Day for $5,000. It was a <em>catastrophic<\/em> event. Now, fast-forward to today. Did you know there\u2019s only one holiday of the year that sells more cards than Valentine\u2019s?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I bet I know what it is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll bet you do too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mother\u2019s Day; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Christmas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, Christmas!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Christmas\u2014Christmas cards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Christmas cards; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t even think about those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s over one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Valentine\u2019s Day beats Mother\u2019s Day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014over one billion cards\u2014second only to Christmas. Eighty-five percent of them are purchased by women. It\u2019s interesting, you know. You start thinking about all of the cards that you purchase\u2014they don\u2019t have any eternal significance, usually. Now, there are some that are being created now that do; but these cards here will equip the human heart to better exemplify God\u2019s heart\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhether it\u2019s a child, or whether it\u2019s a mom or dad, or husband or a wife. Isn\u2019t that the kind of Valentine\u2019s Day we ought to celebrate?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s just a real practical way for a mom or a dad to, not only disciple your kids with this, but to rehearse it yourself. That\u2019s the point. All of us can benefit from going through what the Scriptures have to say about real love. The time leading up to Valentine\u2019s Day is the perfect time to do it. And the resource that Barbara has created makes it easy. It\u2019s something that any family can do. No, no, no. Don\u2019t take me\u2014no, no, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question for you. Who was the founder of Valentine\u2019s Day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Saint Valentine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, no, no. That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no. It was Charles, Duke of Orleans, who, in 1415, was imprisoned. The way he passed time was by writing romantic verses to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? Is this from Wikipedia<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>? Where\u2019d you get this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Uh\u2014it wasn\u2019t Wikipedia. It was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Where was it? You just googled [Laughter] \u2014you just googled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is not true! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You are just believing whatever you found on the internet\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is not true. It was \u201cWhere Stuff Comes From,\u201d I think, or something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There have been a few times, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, when I have just brought you in the studio and you had no idea what we were going to be talking about; right?\u2014a couple of times when that has happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Slightly more than a couple. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Do you remember\u2014there was one program, where I said: \u201cCome in. Sit down, and listen to this thing Al Mohler said; and then, tell me what you think about it.\u201d Do you remember that show?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, so, I thought this is really an example of turnabout is fair play because you just said, \u201cCome in the studio because I want to talk about something Barbara has been working on;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just, in the providence of God, what was I reading, earlier today, on my Kindle device? You see right there? What is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> <em>Charity and Its Fruits<\/em> by Jonathan Edwards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> <em>Charity and Its Fruits<\/em> by Jonathan Edwards. Are you familiar with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I know Jonathan Edwards. I know <em>of<\/em> him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara Rainey is joining us today, as well, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thank you for being here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Thank you, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And charity, of course, is love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And this is the book that Jonathan Edwards wrote on 1 Corinthians 13\u2014the whole chapter. The reason I was reading it was because, back last fall, at our church, I preached a sermon series on 1 Corinthians 13\u2014verses 1-7.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Very good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I have no idea what we\u2019re talking about here today. I come in, and on the wall is hanging this chain of hearts in preparation for Valentine\u2019s Day; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is what you\u2019ve been working on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You want to tell us what it is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s a way for families to focus on love\u2014biblical love\/God\u2019s love\u2014around Valentine\u2019s. Valentine\u2019s tends to be kind of sappy and sentimentalism; or we think Valentine\u2019s is only for couples, and it\u2019s romantic. But love is from God, and we don\u2019t know how to love unless we know Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe teaches us how to love, and He shows us how to love. In my opinion, Valentine\u2019s should be about learning about love\u2014love for one another\u2014in any relationship that you\u2019re engaged in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to tell you\u2014when I taught through 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, we most often hear that chapter read in weddings or in the context of romantic love. The main idea I got out of it was: \u201cThis was a rebuke. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThis was the Apostle Paul talking to a loveless people about: \u2018This is what love looks like, and you don\u2019t look like this.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And what else is a family? Think about it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; exactly. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When we were raising our kids, it was like: \u201cThey <em>need<\/em> training. They <em>really<\/em> need training.\u201d If there\u2019s an area they need training in, it\u2019s this right here because the world is sending false messages about what love is \/ where it comes from. Think of how Hollywood portrays love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s easy; it\u2019s feelings; it\u2019s romantic; it doesn\u2019t take any work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, forget Hollywood. My own <em>flesh<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, no doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014is telling me that love is all about <em>me<\/em> and about what satisfies me. That\u2019s what jumped out at me, as I went over and over this text, and as I read Jonathan Edwards, and as I studied this subject. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver and over again, I was just struck by the fact that love is about the sacrificial service to others. Again, that\u2019s not something that comes naturally in our lives or in families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it might just be a good idea to read the passage where Barbara has really focused on with her Valentine\u2019s resource here for families. Let me just read it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t1 Corinthians 13, beginning in verse 4\u2014and just think about what Bob said about this being a rebuke\u2014challenging us to get it right: \u201cLove is patient\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Ouch!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cand kind.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I\u2019m neither of those. Keep going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cLove does not envy or boast.\u201d Ooh. \u201cIt is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way. It\u2019s not irritable or resentful. It does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things. Love believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I remember somebody\u2014and you\u2019ve probably heard this too\u2014somebody, one time, said, \u201cTake the word, \u2018love,\u2019 out \/ put your own name in there,\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014you don\u2019t get very far before you\u2019re just lying! You are just lying!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara: <\/strong>Exactly\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me just read it: Bobis patient.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, we\u2019re done! [Laughter] See? You see, exactly, what I\u2019m talking about. But the other thing they said\u2014and this is what is so critical\u2014they said, \u201cTake the word, \u2018love,\u2019 out and put \u2018Jesus\u2019\u2014and it\u2019s the description\u2014it\u2019s who Jesus is.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s the point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> That <em>is<\/em> the point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is who we are not\u2014this is who Jesus is. So the call to families and the call to all of us\u2014is not just to get our love-act together\u2014but it\u2019s to be <em>in Him<\/em> so that His love can flow through us; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Exactly because we really do not know how to love. We think we do, but we do not know how to love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are <em>completely<\/em> incapable of loving on our own. The only way we can love, and love well, is to be in a relationship with Jesus Christ and to know Him; so that, then, His love can flow through us to other people because we\u2019re broken, and we don\u2019t know how to do it\u2014which is why the verse, that\u2019s kind of the summary verse for this\u2014even though these hearts go through 1 Corinthians 13\u2014but the summary verse is: \u201cWe love because He first loved us [1 John 4:10].\u201d We would not be able to love if He didn\u2019t first love us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014which, by the way, was the verse on our wedding invitation. It\u2019s the verse that\u2019s engraved in Mary Ann\u2019s wedding ring\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Very cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014because it\u2019s just a reminder, to us, that the source of love is Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, to that point, I\u2019m just reflecting back to the summer of 1972 when I fell in love with this young lady who completely captured my heart, Barbara Peterson. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point\u2014I look back, now, 41 years later, and it\u2019s like\u2014that I even <em>thought<\/em> that what I was experiencing was love is almost laughable. It is a commitment. Life is about learning how to love\u2014love God and love others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We should say\u2014you had known Barbara for years before the summer of \u201972; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She was a good friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. So what happened that summer? I mean\u2014you just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> All of a sudden, I stopped looking at her as a friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The scales fell off your eyes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I go: \u201cShe is a friend; but whoa, man!\u2014man\/woman!\u201d[Laughter] I kind of woke up and go: \u201cI like her, and she\u2019s running hard after God.\u201d We began our mission together\u2014neither one of us knew what we were doing, in terms of loving, but we forged a covenant\u2014that really is the headwaters of love\u2014and began the process of God tutoring us\u2014through the Scriptures \/ through each other\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014of how to truly love another imperfect person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Barbara, in the book that you and Dennis wrote, years ago, about love\u2014you wrote a book called <em>Rekindling the Romance<\/em>. In that book, you talked about different seasons of love. You talked about that young infatuated\u2014in the parking lot, at the mall, when the scales fell off Dennis\u2019 eyes and he looked at you differently. He was falling in love with you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that\u2019s infatuation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And that\u2019s the easy kind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you fall under\u2014it\u2019s like gravity. You fall under the spell, and it just\u2014you just go downstream with it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> It\u2019s easy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And then, you come to the rapids. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a season where love kind of has to <em>fight<\/em> through the fog to stay connected. That leads you to a season of mature love, which is the richest, deepest kind of love there is; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> But you have to go through the rapids to get to the mature love\u2014the kind of love that\u2019s satisfying\u2014the kind of love that we got married for. You can\u2019t get to that unless you go through the hard times and make the choice that you\u2019re going to continue to learn to love\u2014you\u2019re going to continue to learn to forgive\u2014and you\u2019re going to continue to depend on God to give you what you, in the rapids, realize you don\u2019t have the ability to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The reason is because, in the rapids, you learn how to be patient, how to be kind, how to not insist on your own way\u2014all of the things that we find in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13. We can read that and nod our heads, but we have to go through it a few times before it starts to sink into our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that\u2019s what she\u2019s trying to do in this Valentine\u2019s resource that she\u2019s created. She\u2019s trying to, practically, bring us into the experience of love, and have us kind of have a throne-check of our own hearts, and ask the question: \u201cHow are you doing in terms of really expressing <em>real<\/em> love?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake the first one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and maybe, before we get into this, you need to explain each of these hearts is like a little book. Would you like to explain it instead of me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I think I should. [Laughter] Well, the idea is to help us focus on what love is all about during Valentine\u2019s because, when kids are in school, they\u2019re talking about it. There\u2019s advertising everywhere. Yet, it\u2019s a prime opportunity for moms, and dads, and kids to focus on love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are 15 hearts that will come in the kit\u201414 of them are about 1 Corinthians 13. The 15<sup>th<\/sup> one has the verse: \u201cWe love because He first loved us [1 John 4:19],\u201d on the outside. The idea is that, starting on February 1<sup>st<\/sup>, you take the first heart and you read about \u201cLove is patient.\u201d There\u2019s a story in there about someone who demonstrated patience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, now wait. Wait. Before you get to the story on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t going to tell the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I want you to tell the story\u2014it\u2019s a great story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But on the inside of the heart are some summary statements about what it means for love to be patient. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you thought the other was convicting, Bob\u2014this is as well: \u201cLove chooses self-control rather than speaking or acting out of impatience. Love doesn\u2019t retaliate. Love is willing to wait calmly. Love is long-suffering\u2014another word for patience\u2014which means waiting may be long and unpleasant, but love trusts that God is in control.\u201d And then, finally, one more: \u201cLove is not flighty or quick. It takes time to love well.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think kids can catch on to some of these, and grab hold of them, and realize: \u201cIn our family, this is the kind of love we need to be practicing with one another.\u201d Then, on the opposite side, you tell a story. I think it would be good\u2014Bob, why don\u2019t you read the story there? Just read it out loud because this is what folks would do at a breakfast before school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes; and the good thing is that it\u2019s quick, and it\u2019s easy. You can have a short two\/three-minute time with your\u2014as a family\u2014before the day starts \/ before everybody goes off to school or whatever you are doing. It just kind of centers everybody, for a few moments, back on what the truth is. Each one of these has a story because stories are engaging, for children and for adults, to listen to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright. So, let me read what\u2019s on \u201cLove is Patient\u201d: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPatience is not natural to us. We feel impatient when we can\u2019t control the circumstances or people in our lives. When our parents are late to pick us up at school or the traffic jam makes us late for work, the right response is to be patient\u2014trusting that God is at work and He knows what He is doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen translating the entire Bible from Latin and Greek into English, the first person to do so, William Tyndale, practiced great patience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe desired to help his countrymen have the Bible in their own language so they, too, could read words like: \u201cWe love because He first loved us,\u201d which was the verse that changed Tyndale\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the church of that day was so violently opposed to his idea that they arrested anyone who possessed even a partial copy of the Bible. Many of these Bible owners were burned at the stake. Undeterred, William spent the rest of his life translating the entire Bible into English, while fleeing from the authorities who searched for him in every country in Europe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis long-suffering helps us see that love trusts God\u2019s control, even when the wait is unpleasant. The One who perfectly demonstrated how to love this way was Jesus. He told us how to do this when He said: \u201cI do nothing on My own. I always do the things that are pleasing to the Father.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then, after the story is read, it says here: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPause and ask God what to do or say, like Jesus did. Think about staying calm, about choosing self-control instead of blurting out whatever you feel like saying, and enduring unpleasantness while you wait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, there\u2019s a prayer here: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPatience is not easy for me, Lord\u2014not with my family, not with certain people, not with my circumstances. Help me remember it\u2019s not about me, but it\u2019s about what You want to teach me. Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picturing us reading that\u2014and our kids would be bouncing off the walls\u2014even though it only took three or four minutes, total.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, we would have done it while they were eating so they were, at least, a little bit preoccupied. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes; but they\u2019ll be hearing more than you think they\u2019ll be hearing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> They <em>always<\/em> hear more than you think they\u2019re hearing. They pretend like they\u2019re not listening, but they\u2019re hearing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s the way to get stuff in their hearts. And it\u2019s a way to do it so that they can have takeaways that they can, ultimately, apply in their relationships with the parents and, also, their brothers and sisters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And each of these 15 hearts are clipped to a chain. In fact, when I walked into the studio, the chain was up on the studio wall. It looked like one of those \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d signs that you buy at the store to put up for somebody\u2019s birthday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you\u2019d hang this over a windowsill or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u2014fireplace mantle. You could hang it across a door. You can tack it on a wall\u2014just about any place. But the idea is that it\u2019s then up for the first 14 days of February, culminating on Valentine\u2019s Day. As a family, you\u2019re seeing this\u2014day, after day, after day. It\u2019s just a visual reminder of what love is all about. Hopefully, it will provide opportunities for conversation as each family member runs into an opportunity where they realize they\u2019re not loving so well. After all, maybe, they\u2019ll talk about it. Maybe, there will actually be some heart change through the process of that\u2014which is what these are shaped like\u2014are hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, it can be left up all year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe tend to think seasonally\u2014that we can only talk about love, and hearts, and things like that at Valentine\u2019s. Well, it\u2019s year-round\u2014same with Thanksgiving and gratitude. It\u2019s something that should be a part of our conversation and our lives, year-round. So, it can be left up a lot longer than February 14<sup>th<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have a feeling that this is going to be used, by God, in a lot of families\u2019 lives\u2014where kids are going to walk over, and unclip one of these hearts, and say: \u201cHey, Mom! Hey, Dad! I think you need to read this!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Little conviction reminders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, you know it sure could.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, what goes around comes around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not just us instructing the kids. We\u2019re trying to model this as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See, I was thinking, \u201cIf I was a kid, I would find the ones that were most convicting and hide them in a drawer somewhere\u2014take them off the chain and just throw it in the fire or something\u2014get rid of the whole deal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> \u201cGet rid of it.\u201d Well, see, that\u2019s one of my secret goals\u2014is that by creating these things that moms and dads want to do with their children\u2014I\u2019m actually teaching the moms and dads, too, because we all need the truth; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. I was thinking back to what Bob said and what our kids did with a chore box. Remember the chore box?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes. They went through and took out all the ones they didn\u2019t like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We had little pieces of strips of paper that were all the nastiest, dirtiest chores that you could <em>ever<\/em> imagine. And they contained a few others that were pretty simple\u2014like washing a window, or mopping the floor, sweeping the floor or taking out the garbage\u2014things that are pretty simple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I began to notice that the chore box had fewer and fewer strips of paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Well, what we noticed was that, when the kids got in trouble and they had to choose a chore, as a discipline, they always managed to pull out a slip of paper that was the easiest thing in the box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> And it\u2019s because they threw away all the hard ones. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They had edited the inventory!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Yes, they did. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think you guys need to read through this love stuff! You were putting messy chores in the box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> You don\u2019t think that is love? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was very loving, Bob! You know that. You disciplined your kids as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. Well, again, this doesn\u2019t have to be done at Valentine\u2019s Day; but I\u2019m just thinking of all of the parents who are going to the Walmart<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and buying those 32-pack of valentines. The kids are filling them out and giving one to everybody in the class. To have something like this, up around the house at that time of the year, is going to make sense to your second-grader or your senior in high school; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Right; exactly. That\u2019s the idea\u2014is that it\u2019s something that we all need to learn\u2014whether we\u2019re in kindergarten, or whether we\u2019re in high school, or whether we\u2019re an adult. There\u2019s always something to learn about being more loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did a little research on Valentine\u2019s besides finding out that Charles, Duke of Orleans, had started it in 1415.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wikipedia is not research; okay? I\u2019m just telling you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And\u2014it wasn\u2019t on Wikipedia, Bob\u2014but\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> So, you have more information for us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, I have some more information.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Okay; good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> In the 1840s, a woman, by the name of Esther Howland, sold an <em>unbelievable<\/em> number of cards around Valentine\u2019s Day for $5,000. It was a <em>catastrophic<\/em> event. Now, fast-forward to today. Did you know there\u2019s only one holiday of the year that sells more cards than Valentine\u2019s?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I bet I know what it is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll bet you do too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mother\u2019s Day; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Christmas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, Christmas!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Christmas\u2014Christmas cards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> Christmas cards; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t even think about those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s over one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Valentine\u2019s Day beats Mother\u2019s Day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014over one billion cards\u2014second only to Christmas. Eighty-five percent of them are purchased by women. It\u2019s interesting, you know. You start thinking about all of the cards that you purchase\u2014they don\u2019t have any eternal significance, usually. Now, there are some that are being created now that do; but these cards here will equip the human heart to better exemplify God\u2019s heart\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhether it\u2019s a child, or whether it\u2019s a mom or dad, or husband or a wife.
