There have been a handful of times\u2014in the 20 years that we\u2019ve been doing <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014that we have had, as a guest, an ex-con. I mean, I think of Chuck Colson who\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014had served time as a convict. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ex-con kind of sounds harsh, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But that\u2019s what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Former prisoner. I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you want to soften it up a little bit, I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, especially, when he\u2019s sitting across the table from me. Christopher Yuan joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, along with his mom, Angela. Welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Thank you, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> She would not be the ex-con, though. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I said, \u201c<em>He<\/em> is sitting across the table from me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Just wanted to be clear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s it feel like? I mean, you\u2019re a teacher at Moody Bible Institute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve shared a bit of your story, here this week, of you being a prodigal\u2014getting off into the gay lifestyle, getting into drugs, becoming a dealer, getting busted\u2014and we\u2019re about to put you in prison. We hadn\u2019t done that on the broadcast, yet. We will in a few minutes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what\u2019s it feel like to be referred to as a\u2014as Bob so harshly put it\u2014an ex-con? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I accept that because I think it just gives glory to God for what God can do. He could take people that the culture views as trash, and He still has a plan for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We all were prisoners of sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Those who know Jesus Christ have been set free. We shared earlier, Christopher, about you getting busted for having\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014what was the street value of the marijuana that they found in your apartment? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Well, I didn\u2019t even have marijuana; but it was equivalent to the street value of 9.1 tons of marijuana. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you called home from the Atlanta Detention Center. It was the equivalent of a jail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You called home\u2014a collect phone call to your mom\u2014and she said to you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> \u201cSon, are you okay?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that was the beginning of it dawning upon you that there\u2019d been a change in her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you write about that in your book, <em>Out of a Far Country<\/em>. Your mom had met Jesus Christ. She\u2019d been praying that God would do whatever He had to do to get your attention and to bring you to faith in Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And listening to that, Angela, what was taking place on your side of the phone call\u2014I mean, as you got this collect phone call from a jail from your son?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> I knew that was the answer from my prayer\u2014amazing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a great confidence in God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Yes! So, in a way, I was sad and was holding back my tears; but during the same time, I just praised God\u2014\u201cYou finally got ahold of Christopher!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the same time, when I was saying that, in my heart, the hymn came up, you know, \u201cCount your blessings and name them one by one.\u201d So, I knew I had to count my blessings. I tore off a small piece of adding machine tape, by the way; and I wrote down these first blessings. I put a date on it; and I said, \u201cPraise God! Christopher called home. Praise God! He is in a safe place\u201d\u2014because I realized, \u201cRegardless of what we go through, there are blessings.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> My mom kept adding to that list of blessings. She kept taping more pieces of adding machine tape to it. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was going to ask how long the piece of paper she ripped off\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> It\u2019s probably six feet long now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> More than six feet. It\u2019s a bag\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes, both sides. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> \u2014both sides. I asked Christopher\u2014\u201cCan you promise me to call home every day?\u201d Later, we realized each minute cost eight dollars. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> That was a very expensive phone call, but we didn\u2019t want him to know because we really felt that was the way we could share Christ. <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Christopher, did you think to yourself, as you were sitting in the Atlanta County Detention Center, \u201cI guess I\u2019ve bottomed out,\u201d\u2014was there despair? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> It was shock because I did not think I was going to get caught. I thought that I was invincible. No one was ever going to touch me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I finally got arrested, it was unbelief. I couldn\u2019t believe that this was it. It was a few days after I was incarcerated\u2014and I was walking around the cell block\u2014I passed by a garbage can. There was just <em>filth<\/em> coming out of it. I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s my life\u2014trash.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was about to walk by that trash can; and yet, I saw something on top of that trash. I picked it up. It was a Gideon\u2019s New Testament. I took it back to my cell. I opened up that Good Book. For the first time, I read through the entire Gospel of Mark that night. But I did not think that this was going to be the answer to all my problems\u2014but as we know, what we have in our Bibles is not ink on paper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it\u2019s the <em>breath<\/em> of God\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> \u2014and it is sharper than any double-edge sword. It cut through my hard, hard heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was this all new to you? Had you heard the story of Jesus at all? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Christopher:<\/strong> You know, I had probably heard <em>about<\/em> this man, Jesus, but I didn\u2019t know what it all meant. I just figured He was some man\/some good person\u2014but I didn\u2019t know that He was Lord. I didn\u2019t know that He was Savior, and I didn\u2019t know He was God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You eventually went to court and were sentenced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes, I was sentenced to six years. I really thought I was going to get a slap on the hand \/ get out because \u201cI\u2019m a good kid,\u201d from upper middle class\u2014suburb of Chicago. My father is a dentist. I\u2019m actually\u2014you know\u2014I\u2019m a good person. I\u2019m not a high school dropout. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t live on the streets. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I got some even worse news. For all inmates that come through this system\u2014the federal system\u2014they all have to get a physical. So, went through the physical, got blood tests. And a week after that, I was called back to the hospital. I sat, there, in the nurse\u2019s office. She was all nervous\u2014just uncomfortably struggling with the word. She wrote something on a piece of paper, and she slowly slid it across the desk to me. And on the piece of the paper, I saw three letters and a symbol. It read, \u201cHIV+.\u201d <br><br>I called home, and my mom took it pretty hard. I didn\u2019t know what my future was going to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014if I was going to make it out of prison. I had six years. I know people, who within six years, the virus devastated them and got AIDS\u2014and they passed on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Angela, what was that phone call like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> It was like a death sentence to me. So, during the same time, in my ear, I just heard this hymn, \u201cIt is well. It is well\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt is well with my soul.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cwith my soul.\u201d So, in those hours, I think it is only God\u2019s Word that gave me the strength to go through. So, I went into my prayer closet, which is the shower, and just knelt down and just poured my tears to the Lord. So, those hymns and God\u2019s Word gave me the strength and gave me the hope to continue because we don\u2019t know how long Christopher is going to live\u2014how many years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Christopher, as you look back on reading that Gideon\u2019s New Testament, that you pulled out of the trash in the Atlanta county jail, do you see that as the point where things started to turn for you, spiritually? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I think that was the beginning; and you know, Bob, I\u2019ve got to be honest. I\u2019m pretty stubborn. I had a hard, hard heart; and I didn\u2019t want to change. Yes, the drugs\u2014obviously, that was not healthy\u2014but\u2014\u201cI\u2019m gay. This is the way I am. I can\u2019t change. Why do I even need to change?\u201d So, it took a while. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The chaplain in the jail gave you a book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that affirmed your lifestyle; right? That said being a gay Christian\u2014there\u2019s nothing wrong with that; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. Yes. I shared with this chaplain. He told me, \u201cHey, you know, the Bible doesn\u2019t condemn homosexuality.\u201d He gave me a book from his bookshelf which explained that view. I was <em>very<\/em> curious. I thought, \u201cWow! Okay, so, I can have my cake and eat it to. I can have both. I can be a Christian. I can continue affirming homosexual relationships \/ pursuing homosexual relationships, and there\u2019s nothing wrong with that. God will bless that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I took this book, in the hopes of finding biblical justification for homosexuality; but as I read it, I had that book in one hand and the Bible in the other. As I was reading that book\u2014and as it was going over the different passages in Scripture, and justifying, and saying how it didn\u2019t condemn it\u2014I would go to the Bible. I would read the entire paragraph, or the entire chapter, or that whole book that it was talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe it was a true miracle of God\u2014that it was the Holy Spirit that indwells within us\u2014that convicted me that this was, not only a distortion of God, but it was a distortion of His Word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I couldn\u2019t even finish that book. I gave it to the chaplain, and I just read through the Bible. I went through every verse, every chapter, and every page of Scripture\u2014I\u2014looking for anything to justify\u2014to have a positive \/ to bless homosexual relationships\u2014monogamous, adult-consensual homosexual relationships\u2014but I couldn\u2019t find anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, and I like the way you write about this in the book because you say you began to see that heterosexuality is not the opposite of homosexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> There is a passage that we see three times\u2014you know\u2014once in the Old \/ twice in the New\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014where it says, \u201cBe holy for I am holy.\u201d I realized that God wasn\u2019t saying, \u201cBe heterosexual for I am heterosexual;\u201d but He didn\u2019t say, \u201cBe homosexual for I am homosexual,\u201d either. I mean\u2014because what does heterosexuality mean? It means being attracted to the opposite sex\u2014which then could condone adultery, fornication, and lust\u2014all these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I thought, \u201cEven if I became straight, I would still need to submit my life, my thoughts, and my passions to the lordship of Jesus Christ.\u201d So, I thought, \u201cEven if, somehow, there was this shift from going from gay to straight, I would still need to pursue holiness.\u201d That is why I realized that the opposite of homosexuality is <em>not<\/em> heterosexuality\u2014that shouldn\u2019t be my <em>goal<\/em>\u2014but the opposite of homosexuality is holiness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI needed to pursue holiness. We <em>all<\/em> need to pursue holiness. It does not matter what your proclivities are. God has called us to live a life of holiness, not on our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the beginning of me realizing that this is what God is calling me to\u2014not to focus upon my orientation, as the world would call it\u2014not focusing upon, \u201cWhat are my temptations?\u201d\u2014but focusing upon living a life of purity and holiness, regardless of whether these temptations and struggles go away or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> For somebody who has lived for so long, with no restrictions on your sexual behavior or your sexual appetites, to come to a place in life where now that is going to be under the lordship of Christ and you\u2019re going to submit to His authority\u2014we\u2019re talking about moving from one end of the spectrum\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> One extreme end of the spectrum. I was not just having a few partners every week. It would be daily. It was hedonism to the extreme. To say that God was saying, \u201cNo,\u201d to responding to those things was, I believe, really the hand of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ultimately, you began to deal with the issue of your heart\u2014that it was an idol factory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dealing with the issue of idols in your life, ultimately, led you to the foot of the cross to come clean. How did that happen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I was asking myself the questions\u2014you know, reading through the Bible, so many times, we see idolatry and the condemnation. I thought: \u201cI don\u2019t bow to any graven image. I don\u2019t have\u2014you know\u2014I don\u2019t go to an idol temple.\u201d Yet, I realized: \u201cYou know what? No, an idol means anything that I feel like I can\u2019t live without.\u201d So, I began to ask myself that question. Initially, that was obvious. It was the drugs\u2014that was something that I felt like I couldn\u2019t live without. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the last thing that God was convicting me of was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014just the hold that sex had on my life\u2014and the need for intimacy, and physical intimacy, and then, also, my sexuality\u2014how that was such a big part of my identity. I realized that I had put my identity in the wrong thing\u2014in my sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I even struggle when Christians weave and say, \u201cI\u2019m a straight Christian,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m a gay Christian.\u201d Even today, I wouldn\u2019t introduce myself and say, \u201cI\u2019m a Chinese Christian,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m a male Christian.\u201d I want people to know me, first and foremost, as a follower in Jesus Christ. I don\u2019t want there to be any permanent modifier before my main identity in Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had gone from putting, I mean, my identity in my sexuality to, now, putting my identity in Christ. That was, I think, really a key part in coming to know who Jesus was and what that meant in living in the midst of our daily struggles that we continue to have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you remember the phone call you made to your mother to tell her that you had become a follower of Christ? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard for me to pinpoint a day because, like I said, I was so hard-hearted\u2014that it was so gradual. That is why God, in His sovereignty, knew I needed to be in prison. He <em>knew<\/em> that I needed to get away from the world and focus on one thing. Praise God\u2014He helped me to focus on that one thing\u2014which was Him and His Word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, I think my parents, at home, had questions because they knew that I was going to Bible study. I was preaching. I was leading Bible studies. I was bringing people to faith; and they knew about that. I was asking for Bible materials; but they wanted to know, \u201cWhere was my heart?\u201d \u201cWhere was I?\u201d\u2014had I fully surrendered all that I was to Him, including my sexuality? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut one kind of good notice was\u2014you know, after God was working in my life\u2014and I knew that God was calling me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not to focus on my sexuality\u2014but to focus on living a life of holiness\u2014I felt a calling for fulltime ministry, while I was in prison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. And I\u2014you know\u2014and I say from a prisoner to professor, now\u2014but I called home, collect. I told my parents of my interest to continue studying the Bible. I wanted to go into ministry. I told them, \u201cI want to go to Bible college.\u201d\u00a0 At that time, the only Bible college I had ever known of was the Bible college which is in our home city, Chicago\u2014called Moody Bible Institute. <br><br>So, I asked them: \u201cCould you find that school and maybe ask them to mail me an application? I want to apply to that school, once I get out of prison.\u201d I always joke that there was silence. They didn\u2019t say anything. I think they dropped their phones. [Laughter] They didn\u2019t know what to say. I got the application in prison\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, now, wait a second. Angela,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014what were you thinking, on the phone, when you heard that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> I was shocked! [Laughter] We couldn\u2019t believe it; you know? Yes, my husband and I\u2014we were just so thrilled. And yet, it\u2019s not what he was going to <em>do<\/em>. We still wanted to know his <em>heart<\/em>\u2014\u201cWhere is his heart?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI still remember when the court was going to shorten his sentence. We had to go to the court. Before we go in to see the judge\u2014I went to see him, through the small window. I said, \u201cCan I pray for you?\u201d He said, \u201cYes.\u201d He said, \u201cMom, I don\u2019t even care how many years or days the judge is going to shorten my sentence because whether inside the prison or out of the prison, I will be doing the same thing. I will serve the Lord all my life.\u201d And that did it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That told you where his heart was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry this is radio, right now,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and our listeners can\u2019t see your smile on your face. What I want to know is how does\u2014back to Bob\u2019s description of you\u2014how does an ex-con get into Moody Bible Institute? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> By God\u2019s grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> By God\u2019s grace. I knew that God was calling me to fulltime ministry. I felt like Moody was the place. It was in our home town, Chicago. I thought, \u201cThat must be where God wants me to go.\u201d But I wanted to\u2014how do I say it?\u2014I wanted to test that. My golden fleece was the application. I put everything on there\u2014the drugs, the prison, homosexuality. I thought, \u201cOkay, God, if this is where You want me to go, <em>nothing<\/em> is going to thwart that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmazingly, they accepted me. So, I was released from prison July of 2001. I started the very next <em>month<\/em> in August of 2001. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think they made a special\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you think? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I think so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We call it a dispensation. That\u2019s what you got. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you think they made an exception for you? [Laughter] I have to believe it. You know, as you\u2019ve been talking, I can\u2019t help but think of John, Chapter 5\u2014these are the words of Jesus Christ. He said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, \u2018Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.\u2019\u201d That\u2019s the story of your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s what God has done in your soul. You have placed your faith in the only One who can forgive sin, Jesus Christ. As a drug dealer and a gay man, who\u2019d been kicked out of dental school and had been arrested for dealing drugs, Christopher Yuan was used to getting bad news. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tToday, we\u2019ll hear about the good news he heard and believed. There have been a handful of times\u2014in the 20 years that we\u2019ve been doing <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014that we have had, as a guest, an ex-con. I mean, I think of Chuck Colson who\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014had served time as a convict. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ex-con kind of sounds harsh, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But that\u2019s what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Former prisoner. I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If you want to soften it up a little bit, I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, especially, when he\u2019s sitting across the table from me. Christopher Yuan joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, along with his mom, Angela. Welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Thank you, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> She would not be the ex-con, though. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I said, \u201c<em>He<\/em> is sitting across the table from me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Just wanted to be clear. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s it feel like? I mean, you\u2019re a teacher at Moody Bible Institute. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve shared a bit of your story, here this week, of you being a prodigal\u2014getting off into the gay lifestyle, getting into drugs, becoming a dealer, getting busted\u2014and we\u2019re about to put you in prison. We hadn\u2019t done that on the broadcast, yet. We will in a few minutes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what\u2019s it feel like to be referred to as a\u2014as Bob so harshly put it\u2014an ex-con? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I accept that because I think it just gives glory to God for what God can do. He could take people that the culture views as trash, and He still has a plan for them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We all were prisoners of sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Those who know Jesus Christ have been set free. We shared earlier, Christopher, about you getting busted for having\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014what was the street value of the marijuana that they found in your apartment? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Well, I didn\u2019t even have marijuana; but it was equivalent to the street value of 9.1 tons of marijuana. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you called home from the Atlanta Detention Center. It was the equivalent of a jail. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You called home\u2014a collect phone call to your mom\u2014and she said to you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> \u201cSon, are you okay?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And that was the beginning of it dawning upon you that there\u2019d been a change in her heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you write about that in your book, <em>Out of a Far Country<\/em>. Your mom had met Jesus Christ. She\u2019d been praying that God would do whatever He had to do to get your attention and to bring you to faith in Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And listening to that, Angela, what was taking place on your side of the phone call\u2014I mean, as you got this collect phone call from a jail from your son?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> I knew that was the answer from my prayer\u2014amazing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You had a great confidence in God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Yes! So, in a way, I was sad and was holding back my tears; but during the same time, I just praised God\u2014\u201cYou finally got ahold of Christopher!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the same time, when I was saying that, in my heart, the hymn came up, you know, \u201cCount your blessings and name them one by one.\u201d So, I knew I had to count my blessings. I tore off a small piece of adding machine tape, by the way; and I wrote down these first blessings. I put a date on it; and I said, \u201cPraise God! Christopher called home. Praise God! He is in a safe place\u201d\u2014because I realized, \u201cRegardless of what we go through, there are blessings.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> My mom kept adding to that list of blessings. She kept taping more pieces of adding machine tape to it. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was going to ask how long the piece of paper she ripped off\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> It\u2019s probably six feet long now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> More than six feet. It\u2019s a bag\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes, both sides. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> \u2014both sides. I asked Christopher\u2014\u201cCan you promise me to call home every day?\u201d Later, we realized each minute cost eight dollars. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> That was a very expensive phone call, but we didn\u2019t want him to know because we really felt that was the way we could share Christ. <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Christopher, did you think to yourself, as you were sitting in the Atlanta County Detention Center, \u201cI guess I\u2019ve bottomed out,\u201d\u2014was there despair? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> It was shock because I did not think I was going to get caught. I thought that I was invincible. No one was ever going to touch me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I finally got arrested, it was unbelief. I couldn\u2019t believe that this was it. It was a few days after I was incarcerated\u2014and I was walking around the cell block\u2014I passed by a garbage can. There was just <em>filth<\/em> coming out of it. I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s my life\u2014trash.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was about to walk by that trash can; and yet, I saw something on top of that trash. I picked it up. It was a Gideon\u2019s New Testament. I took it back to my cell. I opened up that Good Book. For the first time, I read through the entire Gospel of Mark that night. But I did not think that this was going to be the answer to all my problems\u2014but as we know, what we have in our Bibles is not ink on paper\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but it\u2019s the <em>breath<\/em> of God\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> \u2014and it is sharper than any double-edge sword. It cut through my hard, hard heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was this all new to you? Had you heard the story of Jesus at all? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Christopher:<\/strong> You know, I had probably heard <em>about<\/em> this man, Jesus, but I didn\u2019t know what it all meant. I just figured He was some man\/some good person\u2014but I didn\u2019t know that He was Lord. I didn\u2019t know that He was Savior, and I didn\u2019t know He was God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You eventually went to court and were sentenced. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes, I was sentenced to six years. I really thought I was going to get a slap on the hand \/ get out because \u201cI\u2019m a good kid,\u201d from upper middle class\u2014suburb of Chicago. My father is a dentist. I\u2019m actually\u2014you know\u2014I\u2019m a good person. I\u2019m not a high school dropout. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t live on the streets. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I got some even worse news. For all inmates that come through this system\u2014the federal system\u2014they all have to get a physical. So, went through the physical, got blood tests. And a week after that, I was called back to the hospital. I sat, there, in the nurse\u2019s office. She was all nervous\u2014just uncomfortably struggling with the word. She wrote something on a piece of paper, and she slowly slid it across the desk to me. And on the piece of the paper, I saw three letters and a symbol. It read, \u201cHIV+.\u201d <br><br>I called home, and my mom took it pretty hard. I didn\u2019t know what my future was going to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014if I was going to make it out of prison. I had six years. I know people, who within six years, the virus devastated them and got AIDS\u2014and they passed on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Angela, what was that phone call like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> It was like a death sentence to me. So, during the same time, in my ear, I just heard this hymn, \u201cIt is well. It is well\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cIt is well with my soul.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cwith my soul.\u201d So, in those hours, I think it is only God\u2019s Word that gave me the strength to go through. So, I went into my prayer closet, which is the shower, and just knelt down and just poured my tears to the Lord. So, those hymns and God\u2019s Word gave me the strength and gave me the hope to continue because we don\u2019t know how long Christopher is going to live\u2014how many years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Christopher, as you look back on reading that Gideon\u2019s New Testament, that you pulled out of the trash in the Atlanta county jail, do you see that as the point where things started to turn for you, spiritually? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I think that was the beginning; and you know, Bob, I\u2019ve got to be honest. I\u2019m pretty stubborn. I had a hard, hard heart; and I didn\u2019t want to change. Yes, the drugs\u2014obviously, that was not healthy\u2014but\u2014\u201cI\u2019m gay. This is the way I am. I can\u2019t change. Why do I even need to change?\u201d So, it took a while. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The chaplain in the jail gave you a book\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that affirmed your lifestyle; right? That said being a gay Christian\u2014there\u2019s nothing wrong with that; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. Yes. I shared with this chaplain. He told me, \u201cHey, you know, the Bible doesn\u2019t condemn homosexuality.\u201d He gave me a book from his bookshelf which explained that view. I was <em>very<\/em> curious. I thought, \u201cWow! Okay, so, I can have my cake and eat it to. I can have both. I can be a Christian. I can continue affirming homosexual relationships \/ pursuing homosexual relationships, and there\u2019s nothing wrong with that. God will bless that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I took this book, in the hopes of finding biblical justification for homosexuality; but as I read it, I had that book in one hand and the Bible in the other. As I was reading that book\u2014and as it was going over the different passages in Scripture, and justifying, and saying how it didn\u2019t condemn it\u2014I would go to the Bible. I would read the entire paragraph, or the entire chapter, or that whole book that it was talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe it was a true miracle of God\u2014that it was the Holy Spirit that indwells within us\u2014that convicted me that this was, not only a distortion of God, but it was a distortion of His Word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I couldn\u2019t even finish that book. I gave it to the chaplain, and I just read through the Bible. I went through every verse, every chapter, and every page of Scripture\u2014I\u2014looking for anything to justify\u2014to have a positive \/ to bless homosexual relationships\u2014monogamous, adult-consensual homosexual relationships\u2014but I couldn\u2019t find anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, and I like the way you write about this in the book because you say you began to see that heterosexuality is not the opposite of homosexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> There is a passage that we see three times\u2014you know\u2014once in the Old \/ twice in the New\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014where it says, \u201cBe holy for I am holy.\u201d I realized that God wasn\u2019t saying, \u201cBe heterosexual for I am heterosexual;\u201d but He didn\u2019t say, \u201cBe homosexual for I am homosexual,\u201d either. I mean\u2014because what does heterosexuality mean? It means being attracted to the opposite sex\u2014which then could condone adultery, fornication, and lust\u2014all these things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I thought, \u201cEven if I became straight, I would still need to submit my life, my thoughts, and my passions to the lordship of Jesus Christ.\u201d So, I thought, \u201cEven if, somehow, there was this shift from going from gay to straight, I would still need to pursue holiness.\u201d That is why I realized that the opposite of homosexuality is <em>not<\/em> heterosexuality\u2014that shouldn\u2019t be my <em>goal<\/em>\u2014but the opposite of homosexuality is holiness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI needed to pursue holiness. We <em>all<\/em> need to pursue holiness. It does not matter what your proclivities are. God has called us to live a life of holiness, not on our own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the beginning of me realizing that this is what God is calling me to\u2014not to focus upon my orientation, as the world would call it\u2014not focusing upon, \u201cWhat are my temptations?\u201d\u2014but focusing upon living a life of purity and holiness, regardless of whether these temptations and struggles go away or not. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> For somebody who has lived for so long, with no restrictions on your sexual behavior or your sexual appetites, to come to a place in life where now that is going to be under the lordship of Christ and you\u2019re going to submit to His authority\u2014we\u2019re talking about moving from one end of the spectrum\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014to the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> One extreme end of the spectrum. I was not just having a few partners every week. It would be daily. It was hedonism to the extreme. To say that God was saying, \u201cNo,\u201d to responding to those things was, I believe, really the hand of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ultimately, you began to deal with the issue of your heart\u2014that it was an idol factory. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dealing with the issue of idols in your life, ultimately, led you to the foot of the cross to come clean. How did that happen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I was asking myself the questions\u2014you know, reading through the Bible, so many times, we see idolatry and the condemnation. I thought: \u201cI don\u2019t bow to any graven image. I don\u2019t have\u2014you know\u2014I don\u2019t go to an idol temple.\u201d Yet, I realized: \u201cYou know what? No, an idol means anything that I feel like I can\u2019t live without.\u201d So, I began to ask myself that question. Initially, that was obvious. It was the drugs\u2014that was something that I felt like I couldn\u2019t live without. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the last thing that God was convicting me of was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014just the hold that sex had on my life\u2014and the need for intimacy, and physical intimacy, and then, also, my sexuality\u2014how that was such a big part of my identity. I realized that I had put my identity in the wrong thing\u2014in my sexuality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I even struggle when Christians weave and say, \u201cI\u2019m a straight Christian,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m a gay Christian.\u201d Even today, I wouldn\u2019t introduce myself and say, \u201cI\u2019m a Chinese Christian,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m a male Christian.\u201d I want people to know me, first and foremost, as a follower in Jesus Christ. I don\u2019t want there to be any permanent modifier before my main identity in Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had gone from putting, I mean, my identity in my sexuality to, now, putting my identity in Christ. That was, I think, really a key part in coming to know who Jesus was and what that meant in living in the midst of our daily struggles that we continue to have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you remember the phone call you made to your mother to tell her that you had become a follower of Christ? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard for me to pinpoint a day because, like I said, I was so hard-hearted\u2014that it was so gradual. That is why God, in His sovereignty, knew I needed to be in prison. He <em>knew<\/em> that I needed to get away from the world and focus on one thing. Praise God\u2014He helped me to focus on that one thing\u2014which was Him and His Word. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, I think my parents, at home, had questions because they knew that I was going to Bible study. I was preaching. I was leading Bible studies. I was bringing people to faith; and they knew about that. I was asking for Bible materials; but they wanted to know, \u201cWhere was my heart?\u201d \u201cWhere was I?\u201d\u2014had I fully surrendered all that I was to Him, including my sexuality? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut one kind of good notice was\u2014you know, after God was working in my life\u2014and I knew that God was calling me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014not to focus on my sexuality\u2014but to focus on living a life of holiness\u2014I felt a calling for fulltime ministry, while I was in prison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. And I\u2014you know\u2014and I say from a prisoner to professor, now\u2014but I called home, collect. I told my parents of my interest to continue studying the Bible. I wanted to go into ministry. I told them, \u201cI want to go to Bible college.\u201d\u00a0 At that time, the only Bible college I had ever known of was the Bible college which is in our home city, Chicago\u2014called Moody Bible Institute. <br><br>So, I asked them: \u201cCould you find that school and maybe ask them to mail me an application? I want to apply to that school, once I get out of prison.\u201d I always joke that there was silence. They didn\u2019t say anything. I think they dropped their phones. [Laughter] They didn\u2019t know what to say. I got the application in prison\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, now, wait a second. Angela,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014what were you thinking, on the phone, when you heard that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> I was shocked! [Laughter] We couldn\u2019t believe it; you know? Yes, my husband and I\u2014we were just so thrilled. And yet, it\u2019s not what he was going to <em>do<\/em>. We still wanted to know his <em>heart<\/em>\u2014\u201cWhere is his heart?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI still remember when the court was going to shorten his sentence. We had to go to the court. Before we go in to see the judge\u2014I went to see him, through the small window. I said, \u201cCan I pray for you?\u201d He said, \u201cYes.\u201d He said, \u201cMom, I don\u2019t even care how many years or days the judge is going to shorten my sentence because whether inside the prison or out of the prison, I will be doing the same thing. I will serve the Lord all my life.\u201d And that did it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That told you where his heart was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m sorry this is radio, right now,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014and our listeners can\u2019t see your smile on your face. What I want to know is how does\u2014back to Bob\u2019s description of you\u2014how does an ex-con get into Moody Bible Institute? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> By God\u2019s grace. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Angela:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> By God\u2019s grace. I knew that God was calling me to fulltime ministry. I felt like Moody was the place. It was in our home town, Chicago. I thought, \u201cThat must be where God wants me to go.\u201d But I wanted to\u2014how do I say it?\u2014I wanted to test that. My golden fleece was the application. I put everything on there\u2014the drugs, the prison, homosexuality. I thought, \u201cOkay, God, if this is where You want me to go, <em>nothing<\/em> is going to thwart that.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAmazingly, they accepted me. So, I was released from prison July of 2001. I started the very next <em>month<\/em> in August of 2001. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think they made a special\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you think? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> I think so. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We call it a dispensation. That\u2019s what you got. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you think they made an exception for you? [Laughter] I have to believe it. You know, as you\u2019ve been talking, I can\u2019t help but think of John, Chapter 5\u2014these are the words of Jesus Christ. He said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, \u2018Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.\u2019\u201d That\u2019s the story of your life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Christopher:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s what God has done in your soul. You have placed your faith in the only One who can forgive sin, Jesus Christ.
