Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. We\u2019ve got a little early Christmas gift for our listeners. We are going to hear Part Two of a conversation that you and I had, more than a decade-and-a-half ago. This was in 1999, when we sat down with Elisabeth Elliot Gren and her husband, Lars Gren. They were gathered together with us, along with the speakers who speak at our <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaways. We had a chance to just ask them to share their love story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had <em>no idea <\/em>when we sat down with them that evening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; no! It was just going to be Elisabeth Elliot and her husband. It turned out to be one of the most entertaining evenings I have ever spent with any group of people\u2014it was absolutely <em>delightful<\/em>. Elisabeth Elliot is not just a very somber writer and speaker \/ articulate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but she has a great sense of humor. I think a lot of that came about, Bob, as a result of her marriage to Lars Gren, which was for more than 35 years\u2014just a great lady and he\u2019s a great man. It\u2019s fun to hear two people, who like each other, but who are very different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We got the news this year that Elisabeth had gone home to heaven \/ that she had passed away. I\u2019m looking forward to getting a chance to sit down with her again in eternity and revisit some of this. We thought, as 2015 draws to a close as we head toward Christmas, this would be a story that\u2019s worth revisiting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we left off, we had just asked Lars about how he popped the question when he proposed to Elisabeth. There was a little bit of disagreement between the two of them\u2014I think their memories of that event were a little different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was a magical moment because Elisabeth Elliot Gren kind of had some memories that Lars indicated he didn\u2019t know much about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I was just going to tell some of the things that had happened in my mind, <em>months<\/em> before you actually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, please do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I\u2019d like to know too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He already knows. No, as I said, my mind was <em>absolutely <\/em>closed to the possibility of a third marriage. As much as I liked Lars\u2014thought he was a delightful man and that somebody who would get Lars would be a very fortunate person\u2014but I was not at all in the market for anything like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, through a very remarkable series of circumstances, I found myself with Ruth Graham one time. I just thought: \u201cNow, here\u2019s a person who\u2014she is a wise, wonderful, godly woman. I can tell her a little bit about this person, without naming him or anything, just to see\u2026\u201d\u2014just sort of run by what she might think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI described this man and waited to see what she would say about the possibility of an old woman like me getting married, at such an age, after having two husbands. She just said, \u201cElisabeth, it just wouldn\u2019t surprise me in the least if God would give you exactly that sort of a man.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tVery shortly, thereafter, I was convicted by the fact that God was saying to me: \u201cYou have not asked Me <em>one<\/em> <em>thing<\/em> about this. You just made up your mind that you were going to stay single the rest of your life.\u201d Well, then, I had to get down on my knees, and <em>repent<\/em>, and say, \u201cWell, you know, Lord, I want to do what You want me to do,\u201d and \u201cHow could I possibly have failed to, at least, mention this in prayer?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI then opened my Bible. To my utter astonishment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I have to say, before I tell you that, that I was constantly comparing Jim Elliot to Addison Leach. Jim could do a lot of things Ad couldn\u2019t do; Ad could do things Jim couldn\u2019t do. Lars could do a lot of things that Ad and Jim couldn\u2019t do. I was making these odious comparisons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI opened my Bible and, lo and behold, it was staring me in the face: \u201cMen have different gifts, but it is the same Lord who accomplishes His purposes through them all.\u201d It was through Scripture, it was through prayer, and it was through the wisdom of an older person \/ and I had several other older people, too, that said the same thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so, as he gave you the ring, and said he\u2019d like you to be his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t say, \u201cYes,\u201d or \u201cNo.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What did you do? First of all, what were you thinking as he brought the ring out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, the ring happened. It was a wedding ring\u2014it was not an engagement ring. He brought out this little square box and my heart just sank\u2014I thought: \u201cOh, my goodness. What man would ever give a ring until he\u2019s, at least, proposed?\u201d [Laughter] And he brought out this wedding ring and told me, right up front\u2014he said, \u201cI just\u201d\u2014he said, \u201cThis is my Swedish grandmother\u2019s wedding ring.\u201d Lars is from Norway\u2014well, he\u2019s half Swedish and half Norwegian\u2014but he grew up in Norway. And so he said, \u201cI just want you to know I\u2019m not playing games.\u201d That was another very strong impetus for me to think of him in the possibility of getting married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, when he proposed, I just said, \u201cWell, of course I can\u2019t possibly give you an answer now; but I will think about it and pray about it.\u201d And he was shocked that I did give him an answer as soon as I did. What was it? How many weeks?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, it was in June. Then I kind of thought it might be September\u2014August or September\u2014because I was painting you a kitchen. [Laughter] But you sent a letter about two weeks later; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I think it was something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I think it was about two weeks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes, anyway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> And so, I got it by mail\u2014I didn\u2019t get an answer in person \/ I got it by mail. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She sent a letter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And what did it say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I don\u2019t remember. I think she said\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cYes\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I\u2019m a woman of few words. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, now. Why did you write him a letter and not ask to speak with him personally? Why did you do it that way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> A lady doesn\u2019t call a man on the telephone\u2014she would wait for me to call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I was living in a little cottage on Cape Cod.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She was on vacation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He was painting my kitchen, back in Hamilton.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Doing a good job. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you got the letter, Lars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> And\u2014well, I don\u2019t\u2014well, I was very happy about it. We didn\u2019t announce it\u2014you know, we just kept it\u2014I think we waited until Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t tell\u2014we didn\u2019t tell anybody but just a few\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t tell anybody. We didn\u2019t tell anybody because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u2014family members before we got married in December.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> We got married in December\u2014so we told everybody at Thanksgiving. Some said, I think, that when the news came out, \u201cWhy, the seminary roof blew off.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u2014because I\u2019d been married to a professor at the seminary; and now, I was marrying a <em>student<\/em> from the seminary. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> \u201cNow,\u00a0 what did you do?\u201d But I also got a lot from Dr. Leach\u2014Addison Leach, the second husband\u2014I got his bath robe. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> You still have it\u2014it\u2019s in your suitcase. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars: <\/strong>I\u2019m wearing his watch. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, with Elisabeth having been a missionary\u2014you learn how to cut corners, as a missionary, and make do\u2014and be a little bit on the frugal side. So when I got \/ when we got married, and I got the wedding ring, it did look a little familiar\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and it\u2019s a nice one. See, it\u2019s\u2014you can\u2019t see it back there, but it\u2019s kind of square on top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> And it\u2019s got ELG in there, but it\u2019s kind of not very deep letters. [Laughter] And the reason it\u2019s not deep\u2014she had to grind off about a quarter of it. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe initials before was AHL \/ Addison Hardee Leach\u2014[Laughter]\u2014her second husband. And I told her\u2014I said: \u201cI wish I\u2019d known you were going to do that because I would have left his initials on. It would have been a great conversation piece.\u201d [Laughter] And she didn\u2019t have to cut it either\u2014we were the same size\u2014[Laughter]\u2014same ring finger. Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been in a lot of interviews. [Laughter] But, if you would, just sit with me for a few moments and think about it: \u201cHow would you like to turn the corner from this conversation to some theologically-penetrating questions?\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m not sure we need to, personally. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have something\u2014another little personal touch, at this point, that we would like to add. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Elisabeth, there are a lot of people who probably wonder, \u201cWhat\u2019s it like to be your daughter?\u201d We\u2019ve heard a little bit about what it\u2019s like to court you, and be a good friend, and finally a soul mate and a husband; but we decided we would place a phone call to your daughter Valerie and ask her what it was like to be Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s daughter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s a good question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We want you to listen in as we play a little tape of a phone call we had recently with Valerie, and then we want you to comment on this too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Phone Conversation]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you look back, growing up as Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s daughter, are there more pluses than minuses?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Oh, definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like: \u201cWhat do you think\u2014when you think about it\u2014what has been the most influential part of your mom\u2019s life on you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> She spoke the truth to me <em>always<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014always spoke the truth. That was wonderful\u2014so I could count on her word \/ I was confident that she was telling me the truth. If she had to punish me, or if she had to tell me that something good was going to happen, I could count on it happening. She didn\u2019t ever make empty threats or empty promises.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was she strict?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> She was just strict enough that\u2014I never thought of her as too strict.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you were a teenager, you didn\u2019t think: \u201cI want it a different way. I wish I had a different mom\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Not at all \/ no. The only\u2014only little thing I remember us having a slight disagreement about was the length of my skirts\u2014and this was in 1971 and \u201872. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And what did you think was appropriate?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> [Laughter] Unfortunately, I wanted a little shorter skirt than she thought was appropriate. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now how old were you at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> This was when I was about 16 and 17. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a little shorter\u2014like above the knee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> [Laughter] I\u2019m not going to be too specific.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And where did you guys come to a meeting of the minds on this? I mean, where did the skirts end up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, she probably allowed me to wear almost the style, maybe not quite as short as some girls wore. But I would say\u2014I\u2019m doing it a little differently with my girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When\u2014do I have this right? Your husband\u2014you met him because he was living with your mother?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, he was a boarder \/ he was a seminary student. My mother\u2019s husband had just died, and I was gone off to college. So my mother decided she needed someone else living in the house. Walt Shepard was the young man who moved in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo she got to know him before I got to know him, and she was quite impressed with him. I got to know him when I got home, and I was impressed with him too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Had she been impressed with the other boys who had shown attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No\u2014you mean the ones who had shown me attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Had you been impressed with any of those young men? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, a couple\u2014slightly; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. Was that ever a source of conflict for you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No, not at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when Mom said, \u201cI don\u2019t think much of him,\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> There wasn\u2019t a serious enough relationship with any one of them that I was quite upset. You know, I wanted her approval. I was thankful that, when I got to know Walt, she was completely for him and gave us her blessing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Really, I had very happy teen years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you think of the legacy that she has left to you, what\u2019s at the center of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Besides speaking the truth to me, she always gave me the confidence and the encouragement that I was loved. She always gave me the confidence that my father had lived solely for God\u2019s glory. I was always assured and comforted that someday I would meet my father in heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> And I think the greatest legacy was simply\u2014well, there are so many things that are involved in it\u2014but her love and her absolute clear teaching of the truth to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes. You\u2019ve got a chance to address her in front of the group\u2014anything you\u2019d want to say to them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, my mother is a wonderful mother. She has been a <em>great<\/em> influence on my life, and I am so thankful for her. She\u2019s been such a blessing to me, and she still is a blessing to me. Every time that I talk to her \/ every time that I write to her or hear from her, she wants to encourage me; and she wants to give me hope in the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe always points me to the Lord. I\u2019m glad that you all get to hear her. And I\u2019m, again, just so thankful that the Lord has given me such a gift in a mother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Valerie\u2014thanks for taking a few minutes to be with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> You\u2019re welcome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Appreciate it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Bye-bye. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Elisabeth, what was going through your mind as you listened to Valerie share?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201cTo God be the glory.\u201d I was talking with a friend of mine when Val was about ten years old. This friend had several children, and she was very upset about the kind of relationship that she had with some of her children. She wanted to know how I would describe my relationship with Valerie. I just said, \u201cShe\u2019s really never given me five minutes of worry,\u201d\u2014she\u2019s just a lovely woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI consider myself tremendously blessed in such a daughter, and such a son-in-law, and such beloved grandchildren\u2014the oldest is 21 \/ the youngest is 5.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How short did she want the skirts to be?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Oh, like 12 inches from the waist. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, just exactly the way they are now again. I mean, it\u2019s come full circle, really. It\u2019s just outrageous! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And where did you settle?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, much too short. I mean, I look at some of the pictures\u2014and I\u2019m sure we must have argued over a few inches\u2014but I should never have let her have them as short as I did. [Laughter] It\u2019s just appalling!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You caved? Elisabeth Elliot caved in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m afraid I did. When I look\u2014I didn\u2019t know it till I look at those pictures now\u2014and I think, \u201cHow could I <em>possibly<\/em> have permitted that child to go out the <em>door<\/em> looking like that?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I noticed, too, that yours wasn\u2019t too long there for a while. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Good luck here, Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to rescue you from this one. [Laughter] We were talking, out on the veranda a little earlier, just on your personal opinions on families and size of families\u2014some of your opinions about that for Christian families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes, well, I have the opportunity of doing a lot of traveling around and speaking. Every time I have a chance to speak to young couples, I try to say to them, \u201cYou will be doing your children a very big favor if you have a<em> big <\/em>family!\u201d because, number one, of course, the Bible says you\u2019re supposed to be fruitful and multiply. Of course, it\u2019s almost un-American to have more than two children. But if you only have two children, you\u2019re not multiplying. One man and one woman are not multiplying if all you produce is two children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the great thing that I see\u2014and, of course, having had only one child myself, I didn\u2019t think about these things nearly as much as I do now, although I came from a family of six. The dynamics just fascinate me\u2014I watch my grandchildren together. I see that the great blessing of a big family \/ one of the <em>many<\/em> great blessings is that it\u2019s <em>impossible<\/em> for children to grow up totally selfish in a big family. You just <em>have<\/em> to learn to give and take. I see that in action in Valerie and Walt\u2019s family; and, of course, in many other families, I have that opportunity. So, that\u2019s just a little prod that I like to give to young couples: \u201cYou just keep on having children!\u201d I\u2019m thrilled to see some of these pictures of big families\u2014it\u2019s just <em>wonderful<\/em>. Don\u2019t pay any attention to what the world is telling you on that score. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you another thing that somebody may correct me about\u2014I may not be exactly right on this\u2014but I heard, not too many months ago, that at the rate homeschoolers are multiplying\u2014and, of course, very often homeschoolers have big families\u2014within two or three more generations \/ I\u2019ve forgotten what they said\u2014it would be the majority of the United States. This, to me, is a very heartening thing\u2014to think that, if we could propagate enough Christian families, we would actually take over the majority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob remembers this moment from when we interviewed you\u2014this will be my last question. In the interview\u2014and you\u2019re going to talk to the ladies more about this later on\u2014but I want the guys to hear your answer because I thought this was particularly profound. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Bob and I were interviewing you, one of us asked you the question, \u201cElisabeth, in your marriage, do you ever struggle with being submissive?\u201d Now, I don\u2019t know if you know how you answered it at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Tell me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your answer was\u2014Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She said, \u201cI resist submission with every fiber of my being\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201c\u2014but I do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You did acknowledge that you do, but it\u2019s a struggle for you\u2014a perpetual struggle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, I really don\u2019t like the word, \u201cstruggle,\u201d\u2014so I\u2019m sorry to hear that I used that word because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think you used the word, \u201cstruggle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> In my opinion, the word, \u201cstruggle,\u201d\u201499 times out of 100 means \u201cdelayed obedience.\u201d You know, as long as we can give ourselves permission to struggle, we don\u2019t have to obey God. So that\u2019s a very bad thing if that\u2019s what I said because\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014what I mean to say is that I don\u2019t do it because I <em>like<\/em> to do it \/ I do it because the Scripture clearly tells me. There\u2019s never been any question in my mind that wives are to submit to their husbands. It has absolutely nothing to do with how I <em>feel<\/em> about it\u2014I know what God says. And I saw it in my parents\u2014our parents were the ones that set the example for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s such a delight to hear Elisabeth Elliot Gren and her husband, Lars Gren, and just to remember that God gave them a rich marriage for three-and-a-half-plus decades.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the reason they had a rich marriage was because of what happened on the day following Christmas Eve. We\u2019re on Christmas Eve here, talking about the coming of the King of kings and Lord of lords\u2014Emmanuel \/ God with us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014who came to invade human hearts, and change our hearts, and call us away from selfishness and toward having peace with one another. I was just thinking about this, here on Christmas Eve, Bob\u2014Luke, Chapter 2, verse 14\u2014the heavenly host was praising God, saying, \u201c\u2018Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I just think there\u2019s a need in our world today for peace and the Prince of Peace. The King of kings and the Lord of lords is the One who came to deliver the peace of God between God and man. Jesus Christ will change your life if you\u2019ll give Him a chance. If you\u2019ll trust in Him and allow Him to invade your soul, He can bring that peace into your life, your marriage, your family. I just have to say\u2014I always look forward to Christmas morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a <em>delight<\/em> to just think about when the Prince of Peace came and how He has changed my life, our marriage, our family, and how we get the privilege of helping other families in the process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s humbling to know that we have listeners \/ we have folks, who have attended a <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em> marriage getaway in 2015\u2014there are people, who have been touched by this ministry. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. We\u2019ve got a little early Christmas gift for our listeners. We are going to hear Part Two of a conversation that you and I had, more than a decade-and-a-half ago. This was in 1999, when we sat down with Elisabeth Elliot Gren and her husband, Lars Gren. They were gathered together with us, along with the speakers who speak at our <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaways. We had a chance to just ask them to share their love story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had <em>no idea <\/em>when we sat down with them that evening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No; no! It was just going to be Elisabeth Elliot and her husband. It turned out to be one of the most entertaining evenings I have ever spent with any group of people\u2014it was absolutely <em>delightful<\/em>. Elisabeth Elliot is not just a very somber writer and speaker \/ articulate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014but she has a great sense of humor. I think a lot of that came about, Bob, as a result of her marriage to Lars Gren, which was for more than 35 years\u2014just a great lady and he\u2019s a great man. It\u2019s fun to hear two people, who like each other, but who are very different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We got the news this year that Elisabeth had gone home to heaven \/ that she had passed away. I\u2019m looking forward to getting a chance to sit down with her again in eternity and revisit some of this. We thought, as 2015 draws to a close as we head toward Christmas, this would be a story that\u2019s worth revisiting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we left off, we had just asked Lars about how he popped the question when he proposed to Elisabeth. There was a little bit of disagreement between the two of them\u2014I think their memories of that event were a little different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It was a magical moment because Elisabeth Elliot Gren kind of had some memories that Lars indicated he didn\u2019t know much about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I was just going to tell some of the things that had happened in my mind, <em>months<\/em> before you actually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, please do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I\u2019d like to know too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He already knows. No, as I said, my mind was <em>absolutely <\/em>closed to the possibility of a third marriage. As much as I liked Lars\u2014thought he was a delightful man and that somebody who would get Lars would be a very fortunate person\u2014but I was not at all in the market for anything like that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, through a very remarkable series of circumstances, I found myself with Ruth Graham one time. I just thought: \u201cNow, here\u2019s a person who\u2014she is a wise, wonderful, godly woman. I can tell her a little bit about this person, without naming him or anything, just to see\u2026\u201d\u2014just sort of run by what she might think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI described this man and waited to see what she would say about the possibility of an old woman like me getting married, at such an age, after having two husbands. She just said, \u201cElisabeth, it just wouldn\u2019t surprise me in the least if God would give you exactly that sort of a man.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tVery shortly, thereafter, I was convicted by the fact that God was saying to me: \u201cYou have not asked Me <em>one<\/em> <em>thing<\/em> about this. You just made up your mind that you were going to stay single the rest of your life.\u201d Well, then, I had to get down on my knees, and <em>repent<\/em>, and say, \u201cWell, you know, Lord, I want to do what You want me to do,\u201d and \u201cHow could I possibly have failed to, at least, mention this in prayer?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI then opened my Bible. To my utter astonishment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I have to say, before I tell you that, that I was constantly comparing Jim Elliot to Addison Leach. Jim could do a lot of things Ad couldn\u2019t do; Ad could do things Jim couldn\u2019t do. Lars could do a lot of things that Ad and Jim couldn\u2019t do. I was making these odious comparisons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI opened my Bible and, lo and behold, it was staring me in the face: \u201cMen have different gifts, but it is the same Lord who accomplishes His purposes through them all.\u201d It was through Scripture, it was through prayer, and it was through the wisdom of an older person \/ and I had several other older people, too, that said the same thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so, as he gave you the ring, and said he\u2019d like you to be his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She didn\u2019t say, \u201cYes,\u201d or \u201cNo.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What did you do? First of all, what were you thinking as he brought the ring out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, the ring happened. It was a wedding ring\u2014it was not an engagement ring. He brought out this little square box and my heart just sank\u2014I thought: \u201cOh, my goodness. What man would ever give a ring until he\u2019s, at least, proposed?\u201d [Laughter] And he brought out this wedding ring and told me, right up front\u2014he said, \u201cI just\u201d\u2014he said, \u201cThis is my Swedish grandmother\u2019s wedding ring.\u201d Lars is from Norway\u2014well, he\u2019s half Swedish and half Norwegian\u2014but he grew up in Norway. And so he said, \u201cI just want you to know I\u2019m not playing games.\u201d That was another very strong impetus for me to think of him in the possibility of getting married. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, when he proposed, I just said, \u201cWell, of course I can\u2019t possibly give you an answer now; but I will think about it and pray about it.\u201d And he was shocked that I did give him an answer as soon as I did. What was it? How many weeks?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, it was in June. Then I kind of thought it might be September\u2014August or September\u2014because I was painting you a kitchen. [Laughter] But you sent a letter about two weeks later; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I think it was something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I think it was about two weeks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes, anyway.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> And so, I got it by mail\u2014I didn\u2019t get an answer in person \/ I got it by mail. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She sent a letter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And what did it say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I don\u2019t remember. I think she said\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cYes\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I\u2019m a woman of few words. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, now. Why did you write him a letter and not ask to speak with him personally? Why did you do it that way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> A lady doesn\u2019t call a man on the telephone\u2014she would wait for me to call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I was living in a little cottage on Cape Cod.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She was on vacation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He was painting my kitchen, back in Hamilton.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Doing a good job. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you got the letter, Lars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> And\u2014well, I don\u2019t\u2014well, I was very happy about it. We didn\u2019t announce it\u2014you know, we just kept it\u2014I think we waited until Thanksgiving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t tell\u2014we didn\u2019t tell anybody but just a few\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t tell anybody. We didn\u2019t tell anybody because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u2014family members before we got married in December.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> We got married in December\u2014so we told everybody at Thanksgiving. Some said, I think, that when the news came out, \u201cWhy, the seminary roof blew off.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u2014because I\u2019d been married to a professor at the seminary; and now, I was marrying a <em>student<\/em> from the seminary. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> \u201cNow,\u00a0 what did you do?\u201d But I also got a lot from Dr. Leach\u2014Addison Leach, the second husband\u2014I got his bath robe. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> You still have it\u2014it\u2019s in your suitcase. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars: <\/strong>I\u2019m wearing his watch. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, with Elisabeth having been a missionary\u2014you learn how to cut corners, as a missionary, and make do\u2014and be a little bit on the frugal side. So when I got \/ when we got married, and I got the wedding ring, it did look a little familiar\u2014[Laughter]\u2014and it\u2019s a nice one. See, it\u2019s\u2014you can\u2019t see it back there, but it\u2019s kind of square on top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> And it\u2019s got ELG in there, but it\u2019s kind of not very deep letters. [Laughter] And the reason it\u2019s not deep\u2014she had to grind off about a quarter of it. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe initials before was AHL \/ Addison Hardee Leach\u2014[Laughter]\u2014her second husband. And I told her\u2014I said: \u201cI wish I\u2019d known you were going to do that because I would have left his initials on. It would have been a great conversation piece.\u201d [Laughter] And she didn\u2019t have to cut it either\u2014we were the same size\u2014[Laughter]\u2014same ring finger. Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been in a lot of interviews. [Laughter] But, if you would, just sit with me for a few moments and think about it: \u201cHow would you like to turn the corner from this conversation to some theologically-penetrating questions?\u201d [Laughter] I\u2019m not sure we need to, personally. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have something\u2014another little personal touch, at this point, that we would like to add. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Elisabeth, there are a lot of people who probably wonder, \u201cWhat\u2019s it like to be your daughter?\u201d We\u2019ve heard a little bit about what it\u2019s like to court you, and be a good friend, and finally a soul mate and a husband; but we decided we would place a phone call to your daughter Valerie and ask her what it was like to be Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s daughter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth: <\/strong>Yes, that\u2019s a good question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We want you to listen in as we play a little tape of a phone call we had recently with Valerie, and then we want you to comment on this too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Phone Conversation]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As you look back, growing up as Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s daughter, are there more pluses than minuses?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Oh, definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like: \u201cWhat do you think\u2014when you think about it\u2014what has been the most influential part of your mom\u2019s life on you?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> She spoke the truth to me <em>always<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014always spoke the truth. That was wonderful\u2014so I could count on her word \/ I was confident that she was telling me the truth. If she had to punish me, or if she had to tell me that something good was going to happen, I could count on it happening. She didn\u2019t ever make empty threats or empty promises.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was she strict?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> She was just strict enough that\u2014I never thought of her as too strict.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You didn\u2019t?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you were a teenager, you didn\u2019t think: \u201cI want it a different way. I wish I had a different mom\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Not at all \/ no. The only\u2014only little thing I remember us having a slight disagreement about was the length of my skirts\u2014and this was in 1971 and \u201872. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And what did you think was appropriate?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> [Laughter] Unfortunately, I wanted a little shorter skirt than she thought was appropriate. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now how old were you at the time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> This was when I was about 16 and 17. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And a little shorter\u2014like above the knee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> [Laughter] I\u2019m not going to be too specific.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And where did you guys come to a meeting of the minds on this? I mean, where did the skirts end up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, she probably allowed me to wear almost the style, maybe not quite as short as some girls wore. But I would say\u2014I\u2019m doing it a little differently with my girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When\u2014do I have this right? Your husband\u2014you met him because he was living with your mother?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, he was a boarder \/ he was a seminary student. My mother\u2019s husband had just died, and I was gone off to college. So my mother decided she needed someone else living in the house. Walt Shepard was the young man who moved in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo she got to know him before I got to know him, and she was quite impressed with him. I got to know him when I got home, and I was impressed with him too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Had she been impressed with the other boys who had shown attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No\u2014you mean the ones who had shown me attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Had you been impressed with any of those young men? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, a couple\u2014slightly; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. Was that ever a source of conflict for you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> No, not at all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014when Mom said, \u201cI don\u2019t think much of him,\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> There wasn\u2019t a serious enough relationship with any one of them that I was quite upset. You know, I wanted her approval. I was thankful that, when I got to know Walt, she was completely for him and gave us her blessing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Really, I had very happy teen years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you think of the legacy that she has left to you, what\u2019s at the center of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Besides speaking the truth to me, she always gave me the confidence and the encouragement that I was loved. She always gave me the confidence that my father had lived solely for God\u2019s glory. I was always assured and comforted that someday I would meet my father in heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> And I think the greatest legacy was simply\u2014well, there are so many things that are involved in it\u2014but her love and her absolute clear teaching of the truth to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes; yes. You\u2019ve got a chance to address her in front of the group\u2014anything you\u2019d want to say to them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Well, my mother is a wonderful mother. She has been a <em>great<\/em> influence on my life, and I am so thankful for her. She\u2019s been such a blessing to me, and she still is a blessing to me. Every time that I talk to her \/ every time that I write to her or hear from her, she wants to encourage me; and she wants to give me hope in the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe always points me to the Lord. I\u2019m glad that you all get to hear her. And I\u2019m, again, just so thankful that the Lord has given me such a gift in a mother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Valerie\u2014thanks for taking a few minutes to be with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> You\u2019re welcome. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Appreciate it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Valerie:<\/strong> Bye-bye. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Elisabeth, what was going through your mind as you listened to Valerie share?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201cTo God be the glory.\u201d I was talking with a friend of mine when Val was about ten years old. This friend had several children, and she was very upset about the kind of relationship that she had with some of her children. She wanted to know how I would describe my relationship with Valerie. I just said, \u201cShe\u2019s really never given me five minutes of worry,\u201d\u2014she\u2019s just a lovely woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI consider myself tremendously blessed in such a daughter, and such a son-in-law, and such beloved grandchildren\u2014the oldest is 21 \/ the youngest is 5.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How short did she want the skirts to be?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Oh, like 12 inches from the waist. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, no!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, just exactly the way they are now again. I mean, it\u2019s come full circle, really. It\u2019s just outrageous! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And where did you settle?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, much too short. I mean, I look at some of the pictures\u2014and I\u2019m sure we must have argued over a few inches\u2014but I should never have let her have them as short as I did. [Laughter] It\u2019s just appalling!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You caved? Elisabeth Elliot caved in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes, I\u2019m afraid I did. When I look\u2014I didn\u2019t know it till I look at those pictures now\u2014and I think, \u201cHow could I <em>possibly<\/em> have permitted that child to go out the <em>door<\/em> looking like that?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I noticed, too, that yours wasn\u2019t too long there for a while. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Good luck here, Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>I\u2019m going to rescue you from this one. [Laughter] We were talking, out on the veranda a little earlier, just on your personal opinions on families and size of families\u2014some of your opinions about that for Christian families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes, well, I have the opportunity of doing a lot of traveling around and speaking. Every time I have a chance to speak to young couples, I try to say to them, \u201cYou will be doing your children a very big favor if you have a<em> big <\/em>family!\u201d because, number one, of course, the Bible says you\u2019re supposed to be fruitful and multiply. Of course, it\u2019s almost un-American to have more than two children. But if you only have two children, you\u2019re not multiplying. One man and one woman are not multiplying if all you produce is two children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the great thing that I see\u2014and, of course, having had only one child myself, I didn\u2019t think about these things nearly as much as I do now, although I came from a family of six. The dynamics just fascinate me\u2014I watch my grandchildren together. I see that the great blessing of a big family \/ one of the <em>many<\/em> great blessings is that it\u2019s <em>impossible<\/em> for children to grow up totally selfish in a big family. You just <em>have<\/em> to learn to give and take. I see that in action in Valerie and Walt\u2019s family; and, of course, in many other families, I have that opportunity. So, that\u2019s just a little prod that I like to give to young couples: \u201cYou just keep on having children!\u201d I\u2019m thrilled to see some of these pictures of big families\u2014it\u2019s just <em>wonderful<\/em>. Don\u2019t pay any attention to what the world is telling you on that score. [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you another thing that somebody may correct me about\u2014I may not be exactly right on this\u2014but I heard, not too many months ago, that at the rate homeschoolers are multiplying\u2014and, of course, very often homeschoolers have big families\u2014within two or three more generations \/ I\u2019ve forgotten what they said\u2014it would be the majority of the United States. This, to me, is a very heartening thing\u2014to think that, if we could propagate enough Christian families, we would actually take over the majority.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob remembers this moment from when we interviewed you\u2014this will be my last question. In the interview\u2014and you\u2019re going to talk to the ladies more about this later on\u2014but I want the guys to hear your answer because I thought this was particularly profound. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Bob and I were interviewing you, one of us asked you the question, \u201cElisabeth, in your marriage, do you ever struggle with being submissive?\u201d Now, I don\u2019t know if you know how you answered it at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Tell me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your answer was\u2014Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She said, \u201cI resist submission with every fiber of my being\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201c\u2014but I do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You did acknowledge that you do, but it\u2019s a struggle for you\u2014a perpetual struggle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, I really don\u2019t like the word, \u201cstruggle,\u201d\u2014so I\u2019m sorry to hear that I used that word because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think you used the word, \u201cstruggle.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> In my opinion, the word, \u201cstruggle,\u201d\u201499 times out of 100 means \u201cdelayed obedience.\u201d You know, as long as we can give ourselves permission to struggle, we don\u2019t have to obey God. So that\u2019s a very bad thing if that\u2019s what I said because\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014what I mean to say is that I don\u2019t do it because I <em>like<\/em> to do it \/ I do it because the Scripture clearly tells me. There\u2019s never been any question in my mind that wives are to submit to their husbands. It has absolutely nothing to do with how I <em>feel<\/em> about it\u2014I know what God says. And I saw it in my parents\u2014our parents were the ones that set the example for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It\u2019s such a delight to hear Elisabeth Elliot Gren and her husband, Lars Gren, and just to remember that God gave them a rich marriage for three-and-a-half-plus decades.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the reason they had a rich marriage was because of what happened on the day following Christmas Eve. We\u2019re on Christmas Eve here, talking about the coming of the King of kings and Lord of lords\u2014Emmanuel \/ God with us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>22:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014who came to invade human hearts, and change our hearts, and call us away from selfishness and toward having peace with one another. I was just thinking about this, here on Christmas Eve, Bob\u2014Luke, Chapter 2, verse 14\u2014the heavenly host was praising God, saying, \u201c\u2018Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I just think there\u2019s a need in our world today for peace and the Prince of Peace. The King of kings and the Lord of lords is the One who came to deliver the peace of God between God and man. Jesus Christ will change your life if you\u2019ll give Him a chance. If you\u2019ll trust in Him and allow Him to invade your soul, He can bring that peace into your life, your marriage, your family. I just have to say\u2014I always look forward to Christmas morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>23:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a <em>delight<\/em> to just think about when the Prince of Peace came and how He has changed my life, our marriage, our family, and how we get the privilege of helping other families in the process. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s humbling to know that we have listeners \/ we have folks, who have attended a <em>Weekend<\/em> <em>to<\/em> <em>Remember<\/em> marriage getaway in 2015\u2014there are people, who have been touched by this ministry.
