That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to hear today\u2014the real-life love story between Elisabeth Elliot Gren and her husband, Lars Gren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Dooley Wilson singing <em>As Time Goes By<\/em>]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition. Only a few of our listeners will know that that\u2019s Dooley Wilson, from the movie, <em>Casablanca, <\/em>singing, <em>As Time Goes By<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, as we get ready for Christmas, and as we reflect on a year that is about to pass, it is good for us to remember time that has gone by. That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We are. Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3 says, \u201cFor everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.\u201d It goes on to talk about \u201ca time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which has been planted, a time to kill and a time to heal,\u201d and certainly \u201ca time to weep and a time to laugh.\u201d We thought, as we were going to conclude this year, that we would do the latter\u2014we\u2019d have some laughter about a great woman and a great man, who were married a number of years ago. Elisabeth Elliot Gren married Lars Gren, and it is truly a <em>hoot<\/em> of a story. I mean, it is a treat! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey visited with our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway speaker team, back in 1999. Someone had the foresight\u2014probably it was you, Bob, to record this\u2014because I laughed until I cried, listening to this woman of God, and a man who pursued her and won her heart. It\u2019s a great story! That\u2019s all I can say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is a great story and, of course, this is the year when we mourned \/ when we wept as we said, \u201cGoodbye,\u201d to Elisabeth, who gained the heavenly reward. It\u2019s encouraging to know that we\u2019ll get to laugh with her again someday. In fact, I have to tell you that one of the great revelations of getting to meet her and getting to know her was that she did love to laugh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, she had a twinkle in her eye, Bob! [Laughter] You could see it! It was like the eye of the tiger, except with a grin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Hearing her on the radio for years, she always sounded a bit stern; so to get to sit down with her and know\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, don\u2019t miss this, folks\u2014she was very stern.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She was, but she also had a side of her that was just delightful and fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She was not straight-laced, sober, and sad\u2014she knew how to have a good time. You\u2019re about to enter into a conversation we had with them as they shared their story of how they met and how they dated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some of our listeners may not know Elisabeth Elliot was married, for the first time, to her husband, Jim Elliot. He was martyred in Ecuador in 1956. She wrote about his martyrdom in the book, <em>Through Gates of Splendor. <\/em>She went on to write many other books, including <em>Passion and Purity. <\/em>She and her husband, Lars Gren, were married for more than three-and-a-half decades. It was a great love story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Elisabeth, I want to ask you a question because we\u2019ve all heard about Jim Elliot. We\u2019ve seen his name posted and given credit to quote after quote, but husband number two\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we just don\u2019t know a lot about him. It\u2019s a little bit like some of the missing books of the Bible or something; you know?\u2014you just kind of wonder about him. Share with us a little bit about husband number two, if you would.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Through a speaking engagement in Missouri, I met a man by the name of Addison Leach. He was the vice-president of a small college there, and his wife was actually dying of cancer. He had three daughters. He and I got acquainted because he asked me to come and speak for some things that he did in the summertime there at that college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis wife was supposed to have died ten years before, according to the doctors; but she died about a year later. The following year, Addison Leach asked me to marry him\u2014that was just totally unexpected. But he was 18 years older than I was; and four years later, he got cancer. About half a year after that, he died. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, while he was dying, I was taking care of him at home, after he had left the hospital. I got to the point where I really desperately needed somebody to help me because he was a big man, and he was totally helpless for the last few\u2014about six weeks. I called the seminary, where my husband had been a professor\u2014he was at Gordon Conwell Seminary\u2014and asked if there was a young man that might be willing to come and live in my house and help me take care of my husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA young man applied for the job. He was to move in on the following Monday; and Monday, my husband died. So naturally, he assumed that he would not be needed. But I called the next day and said, \u201cThe room is ready for you if you\u2019d like to come anyway.\u201d So he moved in, whereupon it struck me that it doesn\u2019t look too good for one lady and one gentleman to be living in a house together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis gentleman happened to be considerably older than many of the other students; and, of course, I might have been old enough to be his mother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I thought, \u201cWell, I better call the seminary to see if there was another young man that would be willing to come.\u201d So two men came\u2014lived in my house for two years. The first one married my daughter. [Laughter] The second one married me. [Laughter and applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then my friend\u2014a friend who had lost her husband when she was in her late 70\u2019s\u2014she had lost her one and only husband. She was from Texas; and she said [thick Texas accent], \u201c'Elisabeth, I just want to know\u2014how\u2019d you ever get <em>three<\/em> husbands?\u201d [Laughter] So I told her my story; and she said [thick accent], \u201cI believe I\u2019m going to rent my house out to three widowers.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you are an advocate then of living together before marriage?\u2014right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth: <\/strong>I want you to know\u2014I want you people to know that this gentleman\u2014he is a southern gentleman. He <em>never<\/em> called me anything but \u201cMrs. Leach\u201d the whole time he lived in my house. I mean, he was a gentleman; and so was Walt Shepard, who is now my son-in-law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you proposed, Lars, did you say, \u201cMrs. Leach, will you marry me?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> No, I\u2019ll tell you\u2014I thought about the first one\u2014and the short marriage that he had\u2014and the second one only doubled him\u2014so I was weighing the possibility of mathematical progression and only really facing possibly eight more years of life. [Laughter] But I thought it was worth it\u2014so I made the long, arduous trek that it was to convince Elisabeth that I really was serious about getting married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it was\u2014Dennis would understand this\u2014but I knew, from the very beginning, that I had to do it slowly. It was kind of like a bird dog after a covey. [Laughter] If the dog moves too quickly, they flush the covey; so I did it very, very slowly and steadily. [Laughter] I finally got there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where did you go on your first date? Did you ever have a date?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Oh, yes, I guess. I would say we did, but Elisabeth says we didn\u2019t. [Laughter] One of the nice things I always remember about it\u2014she always enjoyed it because she always went to sleep on the way home in the car. [Laughter] I was thinking I had satisfied everything\u2014so she just went, conk, to sleep. [Laughter] It was relaxing that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s great for your self-esteem; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, I never had any anyway. [Laughter] I can remember\u2014I\u2019ll tell you one nice thing. I still look at that place whenever we drive from the airport back home. There\u2019s a little restaurant on the right-hand side of the road. I remember one time picking her up at the airport. I used to go in when she was out on a speaking engagement\u2014and go in, sometimes, and offer my services to pick her up and all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this was a winter night and she was coming in. I had suggested we get a little bite to eat on the way home. She said, \u201cWell, that\u2019d be fine.\u201d And now, her second husband also had given her this lovely winter coat\u2014black\/full-length\u2014it\u2019s not fur, but it looks pretty good. She was wearing that and boots. There was a little ice on the pavement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pulled in there and went around to open up the door; and she came out, you know. As we walked across, it was the first time she took my arm and we walked across there\u2014I mean, I was about ten feet tall. [Laughter] We got into the restaurant. The booth we sat in\u2014I can\u2019t remember what we ate\u2014but that was probably the beginning of realizing that I was heading down for a fall. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> That\u2019s doubtful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It was, you know. I just\u2014we often look at that restaurant and I say: \u201cRemember that? Remember where we sat in there?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I probably built it up more than it was on her end. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait\/wait! If that was the night for you, when was the night for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She claims\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Years later. [Laughter] My mind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Elisabeth, you strung him on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t stringing him on. My mind was <em>totally<\/em> closed to the possibility. I thought, \u201cThis man could not possibly be serious.\u201d He was just a very kind, polite, southern gentleman\u2014he enjoyed living in my house. [Laughter] And, of course, I can\u2019t\u2014we haven\u2019t got time to tell you the whole story; but I did kick him out, after the second year, because I had a sneaking suspicion that he did have a certain feeling for the landlady, which I thought was very inappropriate. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> That was the first time I got mad at her too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Go ahead and tell about why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, I mean, I might be dumb; but I wasn\u2019t real stupid about the thing\u2014[Laughter] \u2014I knew what she was going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was morning and time to go to seminary. I was standing there, fixing a little bit of lunch. Elisabeth was over there, washing the dishes. We had our backs to each other and\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014I didn\u2019t really see what she did. I\u2019m sure she turned around; but all of a sudden, I just heard her say, \u201cLars, I believe you\u2019d better find another place to live next year,\u201d\u2014it was toward the end of the school year. I don\u2019t know if I said anything at all. I probably said, \u201cOh, alright,\u201d or \u201cYes,\u201d or something; but my blood pressure went sky high in about two seconds. I just got my lunch and walked out. I went up there and spent the day, then came on back to the house. I mean, she had every right to say so and tell me to go ahead and get out. I hadn\u2019t done anything out of the ordinary, but I knew what she was talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I just went in. When I got back in, she was in the study. I knocked on the door and asked if I could see her for a minute. She said, \u201cCome in.\u201d We sat down; and I said: \u201cYou have every right to ask me to leave. There\u2019s no problem in that, but I don\u2019t appreciate the way you did it.\u201d I said: \u201cI\u2019m not some kid coming out of high school here. I\u2019ve been around a little bit; I\u2019ve been in business. We do things in a more gracious manner.\u201d [Laughter] Well, she just listened nicely and politely and thanked me for what I had to say. That was the end of it\u2014we didn\u2019t get into any discussion. She was smart about that! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So did you move out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Sure. I moved out about a mile-and-a-half and kept going around, checking on her \/ seeing if I could do anything\u2014you know, oil the hinges and fix the doorknob \/ take her to the airport\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So the bird dog was still on point? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Oh, yes; yes. The funniest thing was, we never\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, the covey hadn\u2019t flown anywhere yet. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It was funny, Bob\u2014you know, this is over four years \/ over a period of four years. You know, one time we\u2019d be in a restaurant someplace, and someone would see us; and we\u2019d be someplace else\u2014but nothing ever was really said, except there was one little old gal from California who lived\u2014when I moved out, I moved into a house, where they had about five students there. And this little girl\u2014whenever I\u2019d get ready to go out \/ I\u2019d be dressed and heading out\u2014for some reason, she was in the kitchen. As I\u2019d leave, she\u2019d say, \u201cSay hello to old blue eyes,\u201d [Laughter] and I\u2019d never crack\u2014I wouldn\u2019t crack a smile. I just said, \u201cGoodnight, Jackie.\u201d\u00a0 She knew. She was the only one that\u2014I don\u2019t know how she figured it out, but she knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you\u2019ve got to take us to the time you proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong>\u00a0You\u2019re not going to like that. [Laughter] Well\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You did propose; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, in a sort of way\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think he can remember anything about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I really don\u2019t remember what I said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I do. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well; and that\u2019s what makes me feel bad because, if I did say that, it\u2019s not a real good way of doing it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait, wait, wait! <em>Four<\/em> years of bird-dogging and you blow it at the big moment? Is that what you\u2019re telling us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, not exactly. I got her; didn\u2019t I? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, rather than ask a question, I made a statement. I really didn\u2019t expect her to say, \u201cYes,\u201d or \u201cNo,\u201d at that time; but I did want her to know that I was not playing games. And then I followed that by just saying that \u201cI want you to be\u2014 I want you for a wife.\u201d Isn\u2019t that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> \u201cI want you for a wife.\u201d\u00a0 So, I mean, it\u2019s really not a great way to ask. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I was just going to tell some of the things that had happened, in my mind, <em>months<\/em> before you actually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, please do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I\u2019d like to know too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He already knows. No, as I said, my mind was <em>absolutely <\/em>closed to the possibility of a third marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs much as I liked Lars\u2014I thought he was a delightful man and that somebody who would get Lars would be a very fortunate person\u2014but I was not at all in the market for anything like that until, one day, we were just standing in the living room. He denies the possibility that he could have <em>ever <\/em>said this; but I know that was\u2014<em>ipsissima<\/em> <em>verba<\/em>, exactly what he said to me that day. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She\u2019s going to impress you with that one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He said, \u201cI would like to be the one building the fences around you, and I want to stand on all sides.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Whoa! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Now that totally transformed my vision of who this man was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, it was obviously a moment of inspiration \/ God-given inspiration because he can\u2019t remember it \/ he doesn\u2019t believe it. I said, \u201cLook, I <em>couldn\u2019t<\/em> have made it up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was that again?\u2014\u201cI want to be the one\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026building the fences\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s smooth, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, anyway, the next thing \/ the next straw in the wind\u2014I didn\u2019t say anything\u2014but it was just as if I\u2019d flip-flopped as far as my vision of this man because, very shortly thereafter, I was convicted by the fact that God was saying to me: \u201cYou have not asked Me <em>one<\/em> <em>thing<\/em> about this. You just made up your mind that you were going to stay single the rest of your life.\u201d Well, then I had to get down on my knees and <em>repent<\/em> and say: \u201cWell, you know, Lord, I want to do what You want me to do,\u201d and \u201cHow could I possibly have failed to, at least, mention this in prayer?\u201d I then opened my Bible, and to my utter astonishment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I have to say, before I tell you that, that I was constantly comparing Jim Elliot to Addison Leach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJim could do a lot of things Ad couldn\u2019t do; Ad could do things Jim couldn\u2019t do. Lars could do a lot of things that Ad and Jim couldn\u2019t do\u2014I was making these odious comparisons. I opened my Bible and, lo and behold, it was staring me in the face: \u201cMen have different gifts, but it is the same Lord who accomplishes His purposes through them all.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, my!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> And not too long after that, one more amazing thing. This is just a concatenation of amazing illustrations of how God moves in mysterious ways.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It\u2019s a <em>what<\/em>?! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I had an opportunity\u2014[Laughter continues]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Hold it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat did you say, Lars?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It\u2019s a <em>what<\/em>? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A concatenation! Don\u2019t you speak English? That\u2019s plain and simple English\u2014concatenation! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know any synonyms for that; do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t either; no. [Laughter] I don\u2019t know any antonyms \/ I don\u2019t know any words that rhyme with it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I try to avoid it myself! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s too bad radio isn\u2019t TV, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s right! I hate to even break in here\u2014this leaves kind of a cliffhanger\u2014but it\u2019s such a delight to hear both of them, again, sharing what was really a wonderful love story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This kind of reminds me of the Speck stories I tell my grandkids, which have this adventure they go on. Right at the brink of some life-threatening adventure, I pause and I say, \u201cAnd you\u2019ll have to wait until tomorrow night for the rest of the story.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cNo, Grandpa!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cYou can\u2019t do that! No way! No way!\u201d\u2014but they love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re going to love it, too, when you hear the rest of this story as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I hope that, if you have young people at home, and if they\u2019ve had a chance to listen to any of this, that you\u2019ll get them a copy of Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s classic book called <em>Passion and Purity<\/em>, which was updated back a couple of years ago. This is a counter-cultural book. It\u2019s back to what David Platt talked about, earlier this week, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Only a few of our listeners will know that that\u2019s Dooley Wilson, from the movie, <em>Casablanca, <\/em>singing, <em>As Time Goes By<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, as we get ready for Christmas, and as we reflect on a year that is about to pass, it is good for us to remember time that has gone by. That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We are. Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3 says, \u201cFor everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.\u201d It goes on to talk about \u201ca time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which has been planted, a time to kill and a time to heal,\u201d and certainly \u201ca time to weep and a time to laugh.\u201d We thought, as we were going to conclude this year, that we would do the latter\u2014we\u2019d have some laughter about a great woman and a great man, who were married a number of years ago. Elisabeth Elliot Gren married Lars Gren, and it is truly a <em>hoot<\/em> of a story. I mean, it is a treat! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey visited with our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway speaker team, back in 1999. Someone had the foresight\u2014probably it was you, Bob, to record this\u2014because I laughed until I cried, listening to this woman of God, and a man who pursued her and won her heart. It\u2019s a great story! That\u2019s all I can say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is a great story and, of course, this is the year when we mourned \/ when we wept as we said, \u201cGoodbye,\u201d to Elisabeth, who gained the heavenly reward. It\u2019s encouraging to know that we\u2019ll get to laugh with her again someday. In fact, I have to tell you that one of the great revelations of getting to meet her and getting to know her was that she did love to laugh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, she had a twinkle in her eye, Bob! [Laughter] You could see it! It was like the eye of the tiger, except with a grin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Hearing her on the radio for years, she always sounded a bit stern; so to get to sit down with her and know\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, don\u2019t miss this, folks\u2014she was very stern.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She was, but she also had a side of her that was just delightful and fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She was not straight-laced, sober, and sad\u2014she knew how to have a good time. You\u2019re about to enter into a conversation we had with them as they shared their story of how they met and how they dated. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Some of our listeners may not know Elisabeth Elliot was married, for the first time, to her husband, Jim Elliot. He was martyred in Ecuador in 1956. She wrote about his martyrdom in the book, <em>Through Gates of Splendor. <\/em>She went on to write many other books, including <em>Passion and Purity. <\/em>She and her husband, Lars Gren, were married for more than three-and-a-half decades. It was a great love story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Elisabeth, I want to ask you a question because we\u2019ve all heard about Jim Elliot. We\u2019ve seen his name posted and given credit to quote after quote, but husband number two\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014we just don\u2019t know a lot about him. It\u2019s a little bit like some of the missing books of the Bible or something; you know?\u2014you just kind of wonder about him. Share with us a little bit about husband number two, if you would.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Through a speaking engagement in Missouri, I met a man by the name of Addison Leach. He was the vice-president of a small college there, and his wife was actually dying of cancer. He had three daughters. He and I got acquainted because he asked me to come and speak for some things that he did in the summertime there at that college. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis wife was supposed to have died ten years before, according to the doctors; but she died about a year later. The following year, Addison Leach asked me to marry him\u2014that was just totally unexpected. But he was 18 years older than I was; and four years later, he got cancer. About half a year after that, he died. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, while he was dying, I was taking care of him at home, after he had left the hospital. I got to the point where I really desperately needed somebody to help me because he was a big man, and he was totally helpless for the last few\u2014about six weeks. I called the seminary, where my husband had been a professor\u2014he was at Gordon Conwell Seminary\u2014and asked if there was a young man that might be willing to come and live in my house and help me take care of my husband. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA young man applied for the job. He was to move in on the following Monday; and Monday, my husband died. So naturally, he assumed that he would not be needed. But I called the next day and said, \u201cThe room is ready for you if you\u2019d like to come anyway.\u201d So he moved in, whereupon it struck me that it doesn\u2019t look too good for one lady and one gentleman to be living in a house together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis gentleman happened to be considerably older than many of the other students; and, of course, I might have been old enough to be his mother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I thought, \u201cWell, I better call the seminary to see if there was another young man that would be willing to come.\u201d So two men came\u2014lived in my house for two years. The first one married my daughter. [Laughter] The second one married me. [Laughter and applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then my friend\u2014a friend who had lost her husband when she was in her late 70\u2019s\u2014she had lost her one and only husband. She was from Texas; and she said [thick Texas accent], \u201c'Elisabeth, I just want to know\u2014how\u2019d you ever get <em>three<\/em> husbands?\u201d [Laughter] So I told her my story; and she said [thick accent], \u201cI believe I\u2019m going to rent my house out to three widowers.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you are an advocate then of living together before marriage?\u2014right? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth: <\/strong>I want you to know\u2014I want you people to know that this gentleman\u2014he is a southern gentleman. He <em>never<\/em> called me anything but \u201cMrs. Leach\u201d the whole time he lived in my house. I mean, he was a gentleman; and so was Walt Shepard, who is now my son-in-law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you proposed, Lars, did you say, \u201cMrs. Leach, will you marry me?\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> No, I\u2019ll tell you\u2014I thought about the first one\u2014and the short marriage that he had\u2014and the second one only doubled him\u2014so I was weighing the possibility of mathematical progression and only really facing possibly eight more years of life. [Laughter] But I thought it was worth it\u2014so I made the long, arduous trek that it was to convince Elisabeth that I really was serious about getting married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it was\u2014Dennis would understand this\u2014but I knew, from the very beginning, that I had to do it slowly. It was kind of like a bird dog after a covey. [Laughter] If the dog moves too quickly, they flush the covey; so I did it very, very slowly and steadily. [Laughter] I finally got there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where did you go on your first date? Did you ever have a date?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Oh, yes, I guess. I would say we did, but Elisabeth says we didn\u2019t. [Laughter] One of the nice things I always remember about it\u2014she always enjoyed it because she always went to sleep on the way home in the car. [Laughter] I was thinking I had satisfied everything\u2014so she just went, conk, to sleep. [Laughter] It was relaxing that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s great for your self-esteem; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, I never had any anyway. [Laughter] I can remember\u2014I\u2019ll tell you one nice thing. I still look at that place whenever we drive from the airport back home. There\u2019s a little restaurant on the right-hand side of the road. I remember one time picking her up at the airport. I used to go in when she was out on a speaking engagement\u2014and go in, sometimes, and offer my services to pick her up and all. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this was a winter night and she was coming in. I had suggested we get a little bite to eat on the way home. She said, \u201cWell, that\u2019d be fine.\u201d And now, her second husband also had given her this lovely winter coat\u2014black\/full-length\u2014it\u2019s not fur, but it looks pretty good. She was wearing that and boots. There was a little ice on the pavement. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pulled in there and went around to open up the door; and she came out, you know. As we walked across, it was the first time she took my arm and we walked across there\u2014I mean, I was about ten feet tall. [Laughter] We got into the restaurant. The booth we sat in\u2014I can\u2019t remember what we ate\u2014but that was probably the beginning of realizing that I was heading down for a fall. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> That\u2019s doubtful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It was, you know. I just\u2014we often look at that restaurant and I say: \u201cRemember that? Remember where we sat in there?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I probably built it up more than it was on her end. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait\/wait! If that was the night for you, when was the night for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She claims\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Years later. [Laughter] My mind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Elisabeth, you strung him on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t stringing him on. My mind was <em>totally<\/em> closed to the possibility. I thought, \u201cThis man could not possibly be serious.\u201d He was just a very kind, polite, southern gentleman\u2014he enjoyed living in my house. [Laughter] And, of course, I can\u2019t\u2014we haven\u2019t got time to tell you the whole story; but I did kick him out, after the second year, because I had a sneaking suspicion that he did have a certain feeling for the landlady, which I thought was very inappropriate. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> That was the first time I got mad at her too. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Go ahead and tell about why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, I mean, I might be dumb; but I wasn\u2019t real stupid about the thing\u2014[Laughter] \u2014I knew what she was going to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was morning and time to go to seminary. I was standing there, fixing a little bit of lunch. Elisabeth was over there, washing the dishes. We had our backs to each other and\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014I didn\u2019t really see what she did. I\u2019m sure she turned around; but all of a sudden, I just heard her say, \u201cLars, I believe you\u2019d better find another place to live next year,\u201d\u2014it was toward the end of the school year. I don\u2019t know if I said anything at all. I probably said, \u201cOh, alright,\u201d or \u201cYes,\u201d or something; but my blood pressure went sky high in about two seconds. I just got my lunch and walked out. I went up there and spent the day, then came on back to the house. I mean, she had every right to say so and tell me to go ahead and get out. I hadn\u2019t done anything out of the ordinary, but I knew what she was talking about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I just went in. When I got back in, she was in the study. I knocked on the door and asked if I could see her for a minute. She said, \u201cCome in.\u201d We sat down; and I said: \u201cYou have every right to ask me to leave. There\u2019s no problem in that, but I don\u2019t appreciate the way you did it.\u201d I said: \u201cI\u2019m not some kid coming out of high school here. I\u2019ve been around a little bit; I\u2019ve been in business. We do things in a more gracious manner.\u201d [Laughter] Well, she just listened nicely and politely and thanked me for what I had to say. That was the end of it\u2014we didn\u2019t get into any discussion. She was smart about that! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So did you move out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Sure. I moved out about a mile-and-a-half and kept going around, checking on her \/ seeing if I could do anything\u2014you know, oil the hinges and fix the doorknob \/ take her to the airport\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So the bird dog was still on point? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Oh, yes; yes. The funniest thing was, we never\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, the covey hadn\u2019t flown anywhere yet. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It was funny, Bob\u2014you know, this is over four years \/ over a period of four years. You know, one time we\u2019d be in a restaurant someplace, and someone would see us; and we\u2019d be someplace else\u2014but nothing ever was really said, except there was one little old gal from California who lived\u2014when I moved out, I moved into a house, where they had about five students there. And this little girl\u2014whenever I\u2019d get ready to go out \/ I\u2019d be dressed and heading out\u2014for some reason, she was in the kitchen. As I\u2019d leave, she\u2019d say, \u201cSay hello to old blue eyes,\u201d [Laughter] and I\u2019d never crack\u2014I wouldn\u2019t crack a smile. I just said, \u201cGoodnight, Jackie.\u201d\u00a0 She knew. She was the only one that\u2014I don\u2019t know how she figured it out, but she knew.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you\u2019ve got to take us to the time you proposed. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong>\u00a0You\u2019re not going to like that. [Laughter] Well\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You did propose; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, in a sort of way\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think he can remember anything about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I really don\u2019t remember what I said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I do. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well; and that\u2019s what makes me feel bad because, if I did say that, it\u2019s not a real good way of doing it. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait, wait, wait! <em>Four<\/em> years of bird-dogging and you blow it at the big moment? Is that what you\u2019re telling us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> Well, not exactly. I got her; didn\u2019t I? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, rather than ask a question, I made a statement. I really didn\u2019t expect her to say, \u201cYes,\u201d or \u201cNo,\u201d at that time; but I did want her to know that I was not playing games. And then I followed that by just saying that \u201cI want you to be\u2014 I want you for a wife.\u201d Isn\u2019t that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> \u201cI want you for a wife.\u201d\u00a0 So, I mean, it\u2019s really not a great way to ask. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> I was just going to tell some of the things that had happened, in my mind, <em>months<\/em> before you actually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, please do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I\u2019d like to know too. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He already knows. No, as I said, my mind was <em>absolutely <\/em>closed to the possibility of a third marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs much as I liked Lars\u2014I thought he was a delightful man and that somebody who would get Lars would be a very fortunate person\u2014but I was not at all in the market for anything like that until, one day, we were just standing in the living room. He denies the possibility that he could have <em>ever <\/em>said this; but I know that was\u2014<em>ipsissima<\/em> <em>verba<\/em>, exactly what he said to me that day. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> She\u2019s going to impress you with that one. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> He said, \u201cI would like to be the one building the fences around you, and I want to stand on all sides.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Whoa! [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Now that totally transformed my vision of who this man was. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, it was obviously a moment of inspiration \/ God-given inspiration because he can\u2019t remember it \/ he doesn\u2019t believe it. I said, \u201cLook, I <em>couldn\u2019t<\/em> have made it up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What was that again?\u2014\u201cI want to be the one\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026building the fences\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s smooth, man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> Well, anyway, the next thing \/ the next straw in the wind\u2014I didn\u2019t say anything\u2014but it was just as if I\u2019d flip-flopped as far as my vision of this man because, very shortly thereafter, I was convicted by the fact that God was saying to me: \u201cYou have not asked Me <em>one<\/em> <em>thing<\/em> about this. You just made up your mind that you were going to stay single the rest of your life.\u201d Well, then I had to get down on my knees and <em>repent<\/em> and say: \u201cWell, you know, Lord, I want to do what You want me to do,\u201d and \u201cHow could I possibly have failed to, at least, mention this in prayer?\u201d I then opened my Bible, and to my utter astonishment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I have to say, before I tell you that, that I was constantly comparing Jim Elliot to Addison Leach. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJim could do a lot of things Ad couldn\u2019t do; Ad could do things Jim couldn\u2019t do. Lars could do a lot of things that Ad and Jim couldn\u2019t do\u2014I was making these odious comparisons. I opened my Bible and, lo and behold, it was staring me in the face: \u201cMen have different gifts, but it is the same Lord who accomplishes His purposes through them all.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, my!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong> And not too long after that, one more amazing thing. This is just a concatenation of amazing illustrations of how God moves in mysterious ways.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> It\u2019s a <em>what<\/em>?! [Laughter] I don\u2019t know any antonyms \/ I don\u2019t know any words that rhyme with it! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lars:<\/strong> I try to avoid it myself! I hate to even break in here\u2014this leaves kind of a cliffhanger\u2014but it\u2019s such a delight to hear both of them, again, sharing what was really a wonderful love story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This kind of reminds me of the Speck stories I tell my grandkids, which have this adventure they go on. Right at the brink of some life-threatening adventure, I pause and I say, \u201cAnd you\u2019ll have to wait until tomorrow night for the rest of the story.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201cNo, Grandpa!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cYou can\u2019t do that! No way! No way!\u201d\u2014but they love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re going to love it, too, when you hear the rest of this story as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I hope that, if you have young people at home, and if they\u2019ve had a chance to listen to any of this, that you\u2019ll get them a copy of Elisabeth Elliot\u2019s classic book called <em>Passion and Purity<\/em>, which was updated back a couple of years ago. This is a counter-cultural book. It\u2019s back to what David Platt talked about, earlier this week, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.
