Dr. Robert Lewis says none of that kind of measurement is found anywhere in Scripture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> Nothing is said about how much money you make to be a man. Nothing is said about how attractive or buff you are in being a man, or your athletic abilities, or your star power, how much <em>stuff<\/em> you have, or what kind of degrees and positions you hold. Never once in Scripture are those things associated with true manhood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for Friday, November 13<sup>th<\/sup>. Our listeners are going to get a chance to hear from a guy who really is one of the pioneers of ministry to men in our lifetime. Don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I know too many men\u2014thousands of them around the United States\u2014that have been impacted through Robert Lewis and his teaching about manhood. When you told me that you\u2019d gotten Robert to contribute to the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series for men, I thought: \u201cYes! Yes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We just ratcheted it up a little bit; didn\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a five-star general on the\u2014fresh from the battlefield\u2014who knows the needs of men. You\u2019re going to have the privilege of hearing a great message from that messenger. Robert\u2019s a good friend. He was my pastor for more than two decades. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just have to say to men today: \u201cYou need to listen to older men like Robert. He is blue-chip. His life is based on the Bible. He\u2019s a follower of Jesus Christ.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf there\u2019s ever been a time for men today to take a step back and go: \u201cHow do we make a difference here? How do we roll up our sleeves with the number of issues that are out of control in our culture?\u201d\u2014I have to say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the key ways you\u2019ve got to do this, guys, is\u2014you have to start a small group of guys\u2014maybe a big group of guys. We\u2019ve had as many as 500 men go through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series, watching the videos\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014then breaking down into groups of 5, 7, 8 guys\u2014and getting honest and getting real with one another, and talking about what\u2019s knocking the daylights out of them, and where they need help and hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what this series does\u2014it sets it up\u2014it tees it up like a golf shot \/ it puts it right on the tee. Here\u2019s how you can make a difference in another man\u2019s or another young man\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You mentioned that Robert is a part of the series. Of course, you\u2019re in the series as well. We\u2019ve got guys like Crawford Loritts and Matt Chandler. We\u2019ve got James MacDonald, whom you\u2019ve already mentioned. We put together a team of guys who could address the subjects men are facing and do it honestly; but also, they understand what the Bible has to say about what God has called us to, as men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to get a chance to hear Robert address that today. This is a message that he presented to a group of men as we were launching the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series, back a few years ago. It\u2019s classic Robert Lewis talking about what it means to be a man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> I\u2019d like you to look at 1 Corinthians 13:11. I want to talk to you about what it means to be a man. Paul makes this statement in 1Corinthians 13:11\u2014he says, \u201cWhen I was a child\u201d\u2014now I\u2019m going to gender-ize it\u2014\u201cWhen I was a <em>boy<\/em>, I used to speak like a boy, think like a boy, <em>reason<\/em> like a boy; but when I became a man\u201d\u2014can you feel the energy in that?\u2014\u201cwhen I became a man, I did away with <em>boyhood<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, there\u2019s a critical place in every man\u2019s life\u2014I don\u2019t know where you mark it in yours, where the <em>boy<\/em> in you dies. All Paul is saying here is, \u201cI had that moment, and I became a man.\u201d Now he doesn\u2019t tell us what becoming a man actually entails\u2014that is what we\u2019re going to talk about in this session. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, what is clear is\u2014For better \/ for worse, as men go\u2014in that understanding\u2014so goes everything else: \u201cAs men go, so goes the life and the trajectory of marriage today. As men go, so goes the family and the future and the health of the kids who launch from those families.\u201d How often do you run into men, who are still wounded in life and trying to figure it out, because of the family they grew up with? Usually, the headwaters of that wounded-ness go to whom?\u2014Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell pastors, all the time: \u201cWe\u2019re living in a world where we have these incredible mounting financial deficits, but that\u2019s not the biggest threat to our national security. The biggest threat are the ever-growing manhood deficits that we\u2019re accumulating every day in America today, as men go after wrong priorities \/ abandon their marriages\u2014miss it\u2014not because they necessarily want to but miss it with their kids\u2014dumb themselves down and play their lives away.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the biggest threat to America! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the core of real manhood is two words: Accept responsibility. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever had a moment where that got right in your face. I remember my moment\u2014I was a senior in college\u2014actually a fifth-year senior in college\u2014college was <em>fun<\/em> and fairly carefree. I was having a good time. Even though it was coming to an end, I really wasn\u2019t giving much thought about where it was going until I got a phone call from my mom one night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first thing I noticed is her voice was a little bit sober. Here\u2019s what she said to me\u2014she said: \u201cRobert, your dad and I have been thinking. We want you to know, after graduation, you\u2019re on your own. [Laughter] Don\u2019t think about coming back home. Realize that, at the day of graduation, we will no longer, ever, financially support you. It\u2019s time to grow up and be a man.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let me tell you\u2014after I had that conversation, as sobering as it was, I went, \u201cOkay; I want to be a man.\u201d But here was the next big hurdle\u2014I didn\u2019t know what a man was. I <em>wish<\/em>\u2014I <em>wish<\/em> that I would have known, then, what I\u2019m about to tell you today\u2014what the Bible says a man is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we\u2019re going to do some summaries in the time we have about what a man is. Here\u2019s what the Bible says\u2014the Bible says that a man and real manhood revolves around just two things\u2014I want to make it as simple as possible. Here are the two things\u2014it revolves around accepting the biblical responsibilities of manhood\u2014and secondly, courageously living these responsibilities out \/ not just knowing them\u2014courageously living them out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you might be saying: \u201cWell, I\u2019ve read my Bible. Are there manhood responsibilities spelled out in Scripture?\u201d And the answer is: \u201cYes there really are\u2014in fact, in the very first two chapters of Genesis.\u201d Let me just sum them up for you: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst, he was given a will to obey. In Genesis, God gave Adam specific commands to follow. He was not on his own\u2014he was a man under authority. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, he was given a woman to love because the Word of God had been given to him to love her, protect her, and share the Scriptures with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThirdly, he was given a work to do. At least, it started with the garden. It probably would have gotten bigger than that, but that was his first assignment. He had work that he was gifted for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, he had a world to better. He was told to rule and subdue the whole earth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo right there, in the opening pages of the Scripture, here\u2019s God commissioning this first man\u2014that we are like\u2014into the world and telling him, \u201cThis is how you can be a real man, at the core, by obeying and accepting these four responsibilities.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I\u2019m going to embrace these, I\u2019ve got to embrace these with passion. They become four points on the compass every day when I get up. Here\u2019s my compass [holds up Bible], and do you know what my compass tells me for today? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy compass tells me today that I need to know God\u2019s Word and live it\u2014that\u2019s true north. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEast is\u2014I\u2019ve got a woman that I need to love and lead. Now, if I\u2019m a single guy, it\u2019s in my dating life\u2014it doesn\u2019t start just with marriage. When I\u2019m engaging a woman, and dating her, and pursuing her, I\u2019m the pre-Adam protector. I want to set standards in our relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got work to do. I don\u2019t know where it\u2019s going to be for you\u2014we all have different gifts\u2014but when I walk into the office, I need to work <em>hard<\/em>, and honorably, and create a name for myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I told my son\u2014the Proverbs say \u201cHe who works hard will stand before kings. [Proverbs 22:29]\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a community to better. There are things beyond my workplace and home that need my gifting because I\u2019m commissioned to change the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s manhood defined. But how do you take on manhood? Well, it starts, as I said, with accepting responsibilities\u2014biblical responsibilities. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, it\u2019s when you courageously live these responsibilities out\u2014here\u2019s where the rubber meets the road. I had to use the word, \u201ccourageously,\u201d because as I\u2019ve looked at men that I\u2019ve admired\u2014one thing always surfaces out of their life\u2014and that\u2019s the word, \u201ccourage.\u201d Real men are courageous because, at times, seeking to live out these responsibilities will be more than just a little difficult\u2014they will be excruciating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere will be moments in your life where you\u2019ll come to the point, where you\u2019ll just go, \u201cYou know, it\u2019s just not worth it,\u201d and you\u2019ll quit\u2014maybe for a while until what you settled down into no longer feels good anymore\u2014and you pull yourself back up with God\u2019s help. At other times, these responsibilities that you\u2019re being asked to do\u2014they will scare you to death. In fact, if we could do a small group and really started talking about what you need to do with your wife or kids, I mean, some of those things are going to be like a blast of cold air because you\u2019re going to realize, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019m capable of doing that.\u201d Yet, God is calling you to do that to be a real man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, when I was thinking over my journey to manhood, you know, the best analogy I think I could give you guys to what it\u2019s like to be a real man is the analogy of mountain climbing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, mountain climbing is one of those sports that really feel masculine\u2014you know, it\u2019s rugged, it\u2019s dangerous, and it is risky. It\u2019s got a great reward; but boy, there\u2019s just something\u2014I don\u2019t even like heights. When I see those guys up there, I go, \u201cThat looks like a real man up there on that hill.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I want you to know that, because I\u2019ve admired them\u2014I don\u2019t know what got into me; but somewhere about 55 years old, I said: \u201cYou know, I want to do that. Before I die, I just want to climb one mountain.\u201d I had a friend who was a mountaineer. I called him up and I said, \u201cWould you take me up a mountain?\u201d He said, \u201cWhat kind of mountain?\u201d I went: \u201cA <em>real<\/em> mountain. You know\u2014one that has those rocky crags, and goes up, and there\u2019s snow on it, and those kinds of things. And it looks like no one can get to the top.\u201d He said, \u201cYou really want to do that?\u201d [Laughter] I said, \u201cYes, I would.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay, come on.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I went out to Jackson Hole. He kind of trained, a little bit, my son and me\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I took my 15-year-old son. We went to climb one of the 12,000-foot Teton peaks in Jackson Hole, which I quickly learned was way beyond my pay grade. [Laughter] I\u2019m telling you\u2014it was the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever done. I\u2019ve never belayed up with somebody together. I\u2019d never done open-air rock jumping. I\u2019d never climbed sheer-faced walls with picks and repelled down the sides of cliffs. I\u2019d never done any of that, and I learned it all in one trip. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of it was, you know, one of those things where I was questioning, \u201cWhy did I do this?\u201d [Laughter] Some if it\u2014when I actually did it \/ like repelling off a 200-foot cliff\u2014when I got to the bottom, it was thrilling! But like in a manhood journey, there were some points that went over the top. Here\u2019s one\u2014we got close to the summit. As we got close to the summit, you could no longer go on the spine of this little ridge; but you had to go out on the ledge of the ridge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want you to know this ledge was about seven yards long. It had only a few little places indented to hold onto, as you stepped out on it, and only a few little places you could hold onto with your feet. Then there was a 3,000-foot vertical drop. Now, this is a guy that doesn\u2019t like heights! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay; now, to give you the sense of 3,000 feet, put three Empire State buildings on top of one another\u2014then you get to the top of that. Then you climb out on a tiny little ledge and walk across. That\u2019s what it was like. My guide told me, later, that that\u2019s where many people that he takes up on the mountain stop. My son looked at me, and we agreed to go; but I remember, when my son\u2014going first\u2014belayed together because our guide\u2014he was having us, on the other side, saying, \u201cCome on\u201d; but when my son went to step out that first time, he looked back at me. He made a spot-on comment that I was feeling\u2014he said, \u201cDad, this is <em>madness<\/em>!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know, guys, mountain climbing, at points\u2014it is madness because of what it asks you to do. But that\u2019s a great analogy to the climb towards manhood because, at points, along your way\u2014I mean, I\u2019m 62. I\u2019ve some of these moments\u2014at points, along the way\u2014manhood is madness. But here\u2019s what I want you to know: \u201cThere\u2019s good news on the other side of that. There\u2019s always good news on the other side of stepping out in courage.\u201d What\u2019s on the other side of courage is reward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, after my son and I actually went out on that ledge and got to the other side, we had the thrill, just a few hours later, of standing together on a small peak, holding each other, seeing other snow-capped peaks around us, being able to see <em>hundreds<\/em> of miles\u2014the vista was unbelievable\u2014but the <em>satisfaction<\/em> of having conquered a 12,000-foot mountain\u2014what a thrill! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let me tell you\u2014it doesn\u2019t compare to the thrills you and I will have when we step out in courage on the ledges of life and God rewards us on the other side. For instance, let\u2019s say you stepped out on a ledge and you started praying with you wife. What you find is an unbelievable responsiveness because, all of a sudden, she starts hearing your heart. Out of hearing your heart over time, as you continue to pray with her, a new intimacy and vulnerability develops; and a world opens up you didn\u2019t even know exists! Glory to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr maybe it\u2019s courageously stepping out and refusing that promotion. Then, out of that, there\u2019s more time with your kids. You are not just their dad \/ you become their friend. That friendship then begins to build over time; and now, as adults, they\u2019re your best friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA whole new life you never dreamed of emerges by continuing to accept the responsibility of obeying God\u2019s will. You eventually become a spiritual leader in your church. Your wife deeply admires you now\u2014but not just because you\u2019re her husband\u2014because, when she looks at other men, you stand out. You feel that admiration, and your companionship is better than it\u2019s ever been. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy continuing to accept responsibility for work to do, you have a great reputation and <em>name<\/em>. People admire you because of your work ethic, your integrity, and your honesty. It\u2019s given you an honorable <em>name<\/em> in the office. Because of that, you\u2019ve had influence where people have sought you out. Some have even come to Christ because of how you\u2019ve worked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy continuing to accept responsibility for bettering God\u2019s world, you and other men are now well-known for the charity that you were able to organize to help support foster parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you\u2019re one of the leaders that goes over every year and works in that great mission project in Asia. Do you feel the reward of manhood in that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know how you get there?\u2014with a compass\u2014because real-life manhood requires a compass, and it requires courage. Guys, here\u2019s what I want you to know, as I finish: \u201cEvery one of you can have that.\u201d You\u2019re looking at a guy\u2014a son of an alcoholic, leaving a devastating marriage, who made a mess of the first part of his life\u2014I needed to hear that. <em>You<\/em> can have it if you want it. God\u2019s there with the rope; and He\u2019s asking you: \u201cCome on. Let\u2019s climb.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well we\u2019ve been listening to Dr. Robert Lewis talking to a group of men about being a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> About climbing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> About stepping up, and engaging, and courage, and a compass. God has spoken, and He shows us how to live. Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear, in the midst of obstacles, in the midst of distracting voices that want to call you to lesser duties. Courage says: \u201cNo, I am going to take the higher call. I am going to climb the mountain, and I am going to make a difference.\u201d For a lot of our listeners, especially guys\u2014and let me just say a word before I speak to the guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLadies, if you\u2019re married to a husband who needs to be encouraged, as a man, why don\u2019t you\u00a0 begin to pray God will give you the opportunity to encourage him to maybe form or get together with some other guys and start a <em>Stepping Up<\/em> group with some guys\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014maybe with your son\u2014and get together with some other dads\u2014some fathers\/sons. Make sure your son is in another guy\u2019s group so he\u2019s having other men build into his life. I\u2019m telling you\u2014this is one of the <em>greatest<\/em> opportunities to make an impact and have a ministry\u2014in a boy, in a young man, or a man\u2019s life\u2014that exists today. So, you ladies listen\u2014you can make a <em>huge<\/em> difference here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re a guy, well, you\u2019ve heard me say it: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you roll up your sleeves, grab this tool and say: \u2018Let\u2019s get together with some other guys. Let\u2019s find what the Bible has to say about me being a man today in a day that is desperate.\u201d Guys, we are <em>desperately<\/em> in need of men who know where they\u2019re going and, when they fall, they get up. No matter what mistake you\u2019ve made, it\u2019s not too late. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no act that is that shameful that has gone beyond the cross of Jesus Christ. Don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I know too many men\u2014thousands of them around the United States\u2014that have been impacted through Robert Lewis and his teaching about manhood. When you told me that you\u2019d gotten Robert to contribute to the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series for men, I thought: \u201cYes! Yes!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We just ratcheted it up a little bit; didn\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve got a five-star general on the\u2014fresh from the battlefield\u2014who knows the needs of men. You\u2019re going to have the privilege of hearing a great message from that messenger. Robert\u2019s a good friend. He was my pastor for more than two decades. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just have to say to men today: \u201cYou need to listen to older men like Robert. He is blue-chip. His life is based on the Bible. He\u2019s a follower of Jesus Christ.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf there\u2019s ever been a time for men today to take a step back and go: \u201cHow do we make a difference here? How do we roll up our sleeves with the number of issues that are out of control in our culture?\u201d\u2014I have to say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the key ways you\u2019ve got to do this, guys, is\u2014you have to start a small group of guys\u2014maybe a big group of guys. We\u2019ve had as many as 500 men go through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series, watching the videos\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014then breaking down into groups of 5, 7, 8 guys\u2014and getting honest and getting real with one another, and talking about what\u2019s knocking the daylights out of them, and where they need help and hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what this series does\u2014it sets it up\u2014it tees it up like a golf shot \/ it puts it right on the tee. Here\u2019s how you can make a difference in another man\u2019s or another young man\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You mentioned that Robert is a part of the series. Of course, you\u2019re in the series as well. We\u2019ve got guys like Crawford Loritts and Matt Chandler. We\u2019ve got James MacDonald, whom you\u2019ve already mentioned. We put together a team of guys who could address the subjects men are facing and do it honestly; but also, they understand what the Bible has to say about what God has called us to, as men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to get a chance to hear Robert address that today. This is a message that he presented to a group of men as we were launching the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> series, back a few years ago. It\u2019s classic Robert Lewis talking about what it means to be a man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robert:<\/strong> I\u2019d like you to look at 1 Corinthians 13:11. I want to talk to you about what it means to be a man. Paul makes this statement in 1Corinthians 13:11\u2014he says, \u201cWhen I was a child\u201d\u2014now I\u2019m going to gender-ize it\u2014\u201cWhen I was a <em>boy<\/em>, I used to speak like a boy, think like a boy, <em>reason<\/em> like a boy; but when I became a man\u201d\u2014can you feel the energy in that?\u2014\u201cwhen I became a man, I did away with <em>boyhood<\/em>.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, there\u2019s a critical place in every man\u2019s life\u2014I don\u2019t know where you mark it in yours, where the <em>boy<\/em> in you dies. All Paul is saying here is, \u201cI had that moment, and I became a man.\u201d Now he doesn\u2019t tell us what becoming a man actually entails\u2014that is what we\u2019re going to talk about in this session. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, what is clear is\u2014For better \/ for worse, as men go\u2014in that understanding\u2014so goes everything else: \u201cAs men go, so goes the life and the trajectory of marriage today. As men go, so goes the family and the future and the health of the kids who launch from those families.\u201d How often do you run into men, who are still wounded in life and trying to figure it out, because of the family they grew up with? Usually, the headwaters of that wounded-ness go to whom?\u2014Dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell pastors, all the time: \u201cWe\u2019re living in a world where we have these incredible mounting financial deficits, but that\u2019s not the biggest threat to our national security. The biggest threat are the ever-growing manhood deficits that we\u2019re accumulating every day in America today, as men go after wrong priorities \/ abandon their marriages\u2014miss it\u2014not because they necessarily want to but miss it with their kids\u2014dumb themselves down and play their lives away.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the biggest threat to America! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the core of real manhood is two words: Accept responsibility. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever had a moment where that got right in your face. I remember my moment\u2014I was a senior in college\u2014actually a fifth-year senior in college\u2014college was <em>fun<\/em> and fairly carefree. I was having a good time. Even though it was coming to an end, I really wasn\u2019t giving much thought about where it was going until I got a phone call from my mom one night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first thing I noticed is her voice was a little bit sober. Here\u2019s what she said to me\u2014she said: \u201cRobert, your dad and I have been thinking. We want you to know, after graduation, you\u2019re on your own. [Laughter] Don\u2019t think about coming back home. Realize that, at the day of graduation, we will no longer, ever, financially support you. It\u2019s time to grow up and be a man.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let me tell you\u2014after I had that conversation, as sobering as it was, I went, \u201cOkay; I want to be a man.\u201d But here was the next big hurdle\u2014I didn\u2019t know what a man was. I <em>wish<\/em>\u2014I <em>wish<\/em> that I would have known, then, what I\u2019m about to tell you today\u2014what the Bible says a man is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we\u2019re going to do some summaries in the time we have about what a man is. Here\u2019s what the Bible says\u2014the Bible says that a man and real manhood revolves around just two things\u2014I want to make it as simple as possible. Here are the two things\u2014it revolves around accepting the biblical responsibilities of manhood\u2014and secondly, courageously living these responsibilities out \/ not just knowing them\u2014courageously living them out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you might be saying: \u201cWell, I\u2019ve read my Bible. Are there manhood responsibilities spelled out in Scripture?\u201d And the answer is: \u201cYes there really are\u2014in fact, in the very first two chapters of Genesis.\u201d Let me just sum them up for you: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst, he was given a will to obey. In Genesis, God gave Adam specific commands to follow. He was not on his own\u2014he was a man under authority. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, he was given a woman to love because the Word of God had been given to him to love her, protect her, and share the Scriptures with her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThirdly, he was given a work to do. At least, it started with the garden. It probably would have gotten bigger than that, but that was his first assignment. He had work that he was gifted for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, he had a world to better. He was told to rule and subdue the whole earth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo right there, in the opening pages of the Scripture, here\u2019s God commissioning this first man\u2014that we are like\u2014into the world and telling him, \u201cThis is how you can be a real man, at the core, by obeying and accepting these four responsibilities.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I\u2019m going to embrace these, I\u2019ve got to embrace these with passion. They become four points on the compass every day when I get up. Here\u2019s my compass [holds up Bible], and do you know what my compass tells me for today? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy compass tells me today that I need to know God\u2019s Word and live it\u2014that\u2019s true north. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEast is\u2014I\u2019ve got a woman that I need to love and lead. Now, if I\u2019m a single guy, it\u2019s in my dating life\u2014it doesn\u2019t start just with marriage. When I\u2019m engaging a woman, and dating her, and pursuing her, I\u2019m the pre-Adam protector. I want to set standards in our relationship. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got work to do. I don\u2019t know where it\u2019s going to be for you\u2014we all have different gifts\u2014but when I walk into the office, I need to work <em>hard<\/em>, and honorably, and create a name for myself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I told my son\u2014the Proverbs say \u201cHe who works hard will stand before kings. [Proverbs 22:29]\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got a community to better. There are things beyond my workplace and home that need my gifting because I\u2019m commissioned to change the world. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s manhood defined. But how do you take on manhood? Well, it starts, as I said, with accepting responsibilities\u2014biblical responsibilities. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond, it\u2019s when you courageously live these responsibilities out\u2014here\u2019s where the rubber meets the road. I had to use the word, \u201ccourageously,\u201d because as I\u2019ve looked at men that I\u2019ve admired\u2014one thing always surfaces out of their life\u2014and that\u2019s the word, \u201ccourage.\u201d Real men are courageous because, at times, seeking to live out these responsibilities will be more than just a little difficult\u2014they will be excruciating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere will be moments in your life where you\u2019ll come to the point, where you\u2019ll just go, \u201cYou know, it\u2019s just not worth it,\u201d and you\u2019ll quit\u2014maybe for a while until what you settled down into no longer feels good anymore\u2014and you pull yourself back up with God\u2019s help. At other times, these responsibilities that you\u2019re being asked to do\u2014they will scare you to death. In fact, if we could do a small group and really started talking about what you need to do with your wife or kids, I mean, some of those things are going to be like a blast of cold air because you\u2019re going to realize, \u201cI don\u2019t know if I\u2019m capable of doing that.\u201d Yet, God is calling you to do that to be a real man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, when I was thinking over my journey to manhood, you know, the best analogy I think I could give you guys to what it\u2019s like to be a real man is the analogy of mountain climbing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, mountain climbing is one of those sports that really feel masculine\u2014you know, it\u2019s rugged, it\u2019s dangerous, and it is risky. It\u2019s got a great reward; but boy, there\u2019s just something\u2014I don\u2019t even like heights. When I see those guys up there, I go, \u201cThat looks like a real man up there on that hill.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I want you to know that, because I\u2019ve admired them\u2014I don\u2019t know what got into me; but somewhere about 55 years old, I said: \u201cYou know, I want to do that. Before I die, I just want to climb one mountain.\u201d I had a friend who was a mountaineer. I called him up and I said, \u201cWould you take me up a mountain?\u201d He said, \u201cWhat kind of mountain?\u201d I went: \u201cA <em>real<\/em> mountain. You know\u2014one that has those rocky crags, and goes up, and there\u2019s snow on it, and those kinds of things. And it looks like no one can get to the top.\u201d He said, \u201cYou really want to do that?\u201d [Laughter] I said, \u201cYes, I would.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay, come on.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I went out to Jackson Hole. He kind of trained, a little bit, my son and me\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014I took my 15-year-old son. We went to climb one of the 12,000-foot Teton peaks in Jackson Hole, which I quickly learned was way beyond my pay grade. [Laughter] I\u2019m telling you\u2014it was the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever done. I\u2019ve never belayed up with somebody together. I\u2019d never done open-air rock jumping. I\u2019d never climbed sheer-faced walls with picks and repelled down the sides of cliffs. I\u2019d never done any of that, and I learned it all in one trip. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of it was, you know, one of those things where I was questioning, \u201cWhy did I do this?\u201d [Laughter] Some if it\u2014when I actually did it \/ like repelling off a 200-foot cliff\u2014when I got to the bottom, it was thrilling! But like in a manhood journey, there were some points that went over the top. Here\u2019s one\u2014we got close to the summit. As we got close to the summit, you could no longer go on the spine of this little ridge; but you had to go out on the ledge of the ridge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want you to know this ledge was about seven yards long. It had only a few little places indented to hold onto, as you stepped out on it, and only a few little places you could hold onto with your feet. Then there was a 3,000-foot vertical drop. Now, this is a guy that doesn\u2019t like heights! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay; now, to give you the sense of 3,000 feet, put three Empire State buildings on top of one another\u2014then you get to the top of that. Then you climb out on a tiny little ledge and walk across. That\u2019s what it was like. My guide told me, later, that that\u2019s where many people that he takes up on the mountain stop. My son looked at me, and we agreed to go; but I remember, when my son\u2014going first\u2014belayed together because our guide\u2014he was having us, on the other side, saying, \u201cCome on\u201d; but when my son went to step out that first time, he looked back at me. He made a spot-on comment that I was feeling\u2014he said, \u201cDad, this is <em>madness<\/em>!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know, guys, mountain climbing, at points\u2014it is madness because of what it asks you to do. But that\u2019s a great analogy to the climb towards manhood because, at points, along your way\u2014I mean, I\u2019m 62. I\u2019ve some of these moments\u2014at points, along the way\u2014manhood is madness. But here\u2019s what I want you to know: \u201cThere\u2019s good news on the other side of that. There\u2019s always good news on the other side of stepping out in courage.\u201d What\u2019s on the other side of courage is reward. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, after my son and I actually went out on that ledge and got to the other side, we had the thrill, just a few hours later, of standing together on a small peak, holding each other, seeing other snow-capped peaks around us, being able to see <em>hundreds<\/em> of miles\u2014the vista was unbelievable\u2014but the <em>satisfaction<\/em> of having conquered a 12,000-foot mountain\u2014what a thrill! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let me tell you\u2014it doesn\u2019t compare to the thrills you and I will have when we step out in courage on the ledges of life and God rewards us on the other side. For instance, let\u2019s say you stepped out on a ledge and you started praying with you wife. What you find is an unbelievable responsiveness because, all of a sudden, she starts hearing your heart. Out of hearing your heart over time, as you continue to pray with her, a new intimacy and vulnerability develops; and a world opens up you didn\u2019t even know exists! Glory to God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr maybe it\u2019s courageously stepping out and refusing that promotion. Then, out of that, there\u2019s more time with your kids. You are not just their dad \/ you become their friend. That friendship then begins to build over time; and now, as adults, they\u2019re your best friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA whole new life you never dreamed of emerges by continuing to accept the responsibility of obeying God\u2019s will. You eventually become a spiritual leader in your church. Your wife deeply admires you now\u2014but not just because you\u2019re her husband\u2014because, when she looks at other men, you stand out. You feel that admiration, and your companionship is better than it\u2019s ever been. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy continuing to accept responsibility for work to do, you have a great reputation and <em>name<\/em>. People admire you because of your work ethic, your integrity, and your honesty. It\u2019s given you an honorable <em>name<\/em> in the office. Because of that, you\u2019ve had influence where people have sought you out. Some have even come to Christ because of how you\u2019ve worked. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy continuing to accept responsibility for bettering God\u2019s world, you and other men are now well-known for the charity that you were able to organize to help support foster parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you\u2019re one of the leaders that goes over every year and works in that great mission project in Asia. Do you feel the reward of manhood in that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know how you get there?\u2014with a compass\u2014because real-life manhood requires a compass, and it requires courage. Guys, here\u2019s what I want you to know, as I finish: \u201cEvery one of you can have that.\u201d You\u2019re looking at a guy\u2014a son of an alcoholic, leaving a devastating marriage, who made a mess of the first part of his life\u2014I needed to hear that. <em>You<\/em> can have it if you want it. God\u2019s there with the rope; and He\u2019s asking you: \u201cCome on. Let\u2019s climb.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well we\u2019ve been listening to Dr. Robert Lewis talking to a group of men about being a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> About climbing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> About stepping up, and engaging, and courage, and a compass. That\u2019s really what guys need; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It is, and the compass is this book right here\u2014the Bible. It has not stuttered. God has spoken, and He shows us how to live. Courage is doing your duty in the face of fear, in the midst of obstacles, in the midst of distracting voices that want to call you to lesser duties. Courage says: \u201cNo, I am going to take the higher call. I am going to climb the mountain, and I am going to make a difference.\u201d For a lot of our listeners, especially guys\u2014and let me just say a word before I speak to the guys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLadies, if you\u2019re married to a husband who needs to be encouraged, as a man, why don\u2019t you\u00a0 begin to pray God will give you the opportunity to encourage him to maybe form or get together with some other guys and start a <em>Stepping Up<\/em> group with some guys\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014maybe with your son\u2014and get together with some other dads\u2014some fathers\/sons. Make sure your son is in another guy\u2019s group so he\u2019s having other men build into his life. I\u2019m telling you\u2014this is one of the <em>greatest<\/em> opportunities to make an impact and have a ministry\u2014in a boy, in a young man, or a man\u2019s life\u2014that exists today. So, you ladies listen\u2014you can make a <em>huge<\/em> difference here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re a guy, well, you\u2019ve heard me say it: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you roll up your sleeves, grab this tool and say: \u2018Let\u2019s get together with some other guys. Let\u2019s find what the Bible has to say about me being a man today in a day that is desperate.\u201d Guys, we are <em>desperately<\/em> in need of men who know where they\u2019re going and, when they fall, they get up. No matter what mistake you\u2019ve made, it\u2019s not too late. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no act that is that shameful that has gone beyond the cross of Jesus Christ. He wants to use you, even in your brokenness, to make a difference in other men and women\u2019s lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, if the guys who are listening would get one of these kits\u2014the ten-part video series of <em>Stepping<\/em> <em>Up<\/em>\u2014and get five other guys and go through it, starting in the new year\u2014if we could get every guy whose listening to do that, I think there\u2019d be a <em>revolution<\/em> in our country.
